You can’t get to know Granada without visiting its heart, the Albaicin quarter. Situated on a hill in front of the Alhambra the neighborhood is a magnificent viewpoint from which you can appreciate the red fortress from any of its angles. Its labyrinthine and winding streets responds to its Muslim origin by combining the typical Arab constructions, with their impeccable whitewash, with Renaissance towers. Walk its streets and soak up the smell of orange blossom and jasmine from its traditional ‘carmenes’, see the busiest squares in the neighborhood where tradition and modernity merge and let yourself be carried away by the spirit that roams the streets of this beautiful neighborhood.

Right next to the Albaicín we find the valley of Valparaíso, a natural enclave of the Sacromonte district. Flamenco and art flood each of its corners, the caves on the hill become flamenco stages and the guitars carry the rhythm of this unique neighborhood.

If you’re planning to explore the oldest part of Granada, booking an Albaicin walking tour is the best way to do it !

In this article, you will find a selection of the best walking tours for Albaicin , hand-picked and reviewed by me.

How do I know which ones are the best?

I have been living in Southern Spain since 2020 and visited Granada four times (and more trips planned!).

Most of my time in Granada I spent walking around Albaicin and Sacromonte, so I am very familiar with this historic part of the city, and I love returning there on every possible occasion.

In addition to my top picks for walking tours, I have included many practical tips for planning your walking tour and other valuable things to know before visiting Granada.

Let’s step into the details (pun intended!).

sunset in Albaicin, granada - Spain

No time to read the whole article?

This bestselling and highly-rated walking tour will take you to Albaicin and Sacromonte at sunset time , to uncover the magic of the city at golden hour.

Albaicin is the oldest and in my opinion, the most beautiful part of Granada.

It is the old Arab quarter that hides some of the biggest treasures . This area stretches from Alhambra Hill to the borders with Sacromonte and Elvira.

Albaicin has a strong Muslim influence. It is the place where the first Siri court was founded in the 11th century and where you will find the oldest and best preserved traditional Hammam baths (like the El Banuelo ).

Access to Albaicin is from Plaza St Ana, from where you can continue along the river Darro and head up to the hills to enjoy the famous views of Alhambra.

Top Tips Walking Tours in Albaicin, Spain

Here are some practical things to consider when you book your Albaicin walking tour!

WALKING IN ALBAICIN

Albaicin is the oldest part of Granada and consists mainly of steep cobblestone streets leading up to the hills, from where you can get a nice view of Alhambra.

It’s a maze of tiny streets leading down to the main road by river Darro, or circling to a small square or Carmen. Having a local expert guide will undoubtedly save you from taking lots of wrong turns and finding the best sports without wasting any extra time.

Due to the surface you will encounter and the hills, comfortable shoes are an absolute must. In the cooler months, the streets may be a little slippery after the rain, so keep that in mind when selecting your shoes too.

TOUR EXCLUSIONS

As it’s stated on each walking tour page, these tours are not suitable for people with mobility issues, those on wheelchairs and also those who would struggle with a bit of an uphill climb.

Small kids might also not enjoy these walking tours, especially the ones longer than two hours.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

The weather can change pretty fast, especially in the winter and spring months, so keep this in mind when you get ready for your walking tour.

Also, remember to check that you’re happy with the cancellation policy of each tour – the tours typically run even in bad weather.

Luckily all the tours I selected have a free cancellation policy of up to 24 hours, so you can cancel a day before if the weather has turned bad.

TRAVELLING WITH KIDS

If you’re travelling with a baby, you should be aware that a pram with small narrow wheels will struggle to navigate through the streets in Albaicin. You might be better off with a baby carrier instead, or taking a pram with more sturdy wheels.

Small kids might find these walking tours a little exhausting as most of them involve climbing some hills. Some of the tours also don’t allow kids under a certain age to attend (usually 6 or 7 year olds).

Not Sure About Walks?

Try bike tours instead!

If you’re visiting Granada in the hot summer months, an alternative and more pleasant way to experience the city (and its many steep roads) is by booking a bike tour.

The Districts of the Albaicin and Sacromonte , both declared World Heritage Sites , are two of the most colourful, historic and enchanting areas in the city of Granada. Don’t miss out on any of its wonders by joining one of our small groups. We’ll make you feel pampered and ensure you have the best experience ever.

Our very passionate and professional guides will have time for you and all your requests and questions.

The Albaicin walking tour in the evening allows you to wander its narrow, jasmine-scented streets and enjoy the fantastic views of the Alhambra, to admire the gardens of the Cármenes (the traditional local houses) and is a pleasure for all the senses as well as a taste of the area’s Moorish origins . The Sacromonte district is the area settled by the gypsies who accompanied the troops of the Catholic Kings in their conquest of the city. It is famed for its cave houses, where the descendants of those gypsies continue to celebrate their traditions with dances and songs. The traditional Zambra was born here, a local variety of songs and dances that are still performed today.

Our route starts at sunset . The group will have several opportunities to enjoy views of the Alhambra at different times as the evening draws on. At the end of the Albaicin walking tour, the participants are treated to a drink with a tapa , a traditional custom in Granada.

  • Elisark 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disorganized and poor customer service They get 2 stars just because our Alhambra tour guide JJ was really good. The rest was a mess, very disorganized, they changed the meeting point twice without notifying. This is a place where there are hundreds of people looking for their tour. Nobody knew anything and the person who we were supposed to look for, had an orange umbrella that was closed laying on the floor. Who could see that among the crowd!!! We had to miss the other tour we had with them because my 8 year old son got violently sick, vomiting. They wanted me to go get a doctor's note in order to refund me. We are in a new city for 2 days in a foreign country and I was supposed to go look for a doctor for them to believe I got a sick child at the hotel. Absolutely ridiculous. They stopped answering my messages, no refund was issued. The four of us missed the tour and I notified them with plenty of time.... free money for them. We won't recommend this tour company to anyone. I wished I could leave a zero star review. Read more Written February 27, 2024

(impossible to get in without those tickets if not booked in advance) It is supposed to be booked by them but in reality it is not. Be aware ! The tour was comfortably paced, with time to savor the views, visit the new church and mosque at the top of the Albayzin, and explore one of the Sacromonte cave dwellings. Thanks to Irene’s conversational style of presenting information, I still remember a lot of the curious details about the aqueduct, carmens, and caves. Very enjoyable visit. Finally told no English guided tours today, even though in the confirmation email it said in english. We asked the guide who we where meant to be with, but they didn’t speak english so couldn’t help. The company then told us we would have to pay more for an Audio tour in English and go on our own after already paying €60 each! All this after paying for a guided tour! We managed to get someone to talk to the head office to translate and try to resolve the issue. They found them rude and unhelpful. In the end we had to guide ourselves otherwise we would have missed the opportunity to see the Alhambra. We would not recommend this company! At no point did we feel they tried to resolve the issue and customer service is not acceptable. Read more Written April 26, 2023

We looked for our guide (who we told would be holding an orange umbrella) , we never did see an orange umbrella. At 9 am we rang the tour company they did not answer. We repeatedly rang them over the next five minutes, finally the answered and told us that guide was running late , it was now 9.10 am at 9.15 am we rang the tour operator again , we told by the tour operator told to go to the Porto de Vino (15 minute walk from the main entrance) again no tour guide. I tried to call the tour operator however they refused to answer the call , as this point I did receive the tickets via text from the tour operator however had now missed our window for the Main palace. Appalling customer service they treated us with absolute contempt. Their English speaking skills are poor and twice we had to engage an Spanish speaker to translate for us. We have been on tours throughout the World, and this is without doubt the worst experience we have ever had. If you book with them do so at your own risk, We came to Granada from Australia specifically to visit the Alhambra and these opportunists profited financially and denied us a once in lifetime experience.
