7 Awesome Things to Do in Alesund Cruise Port

From the city’s museums and historic landmarks to the magnificent fjords and natural treasures, the port of Alesund is a delightful blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Here are the top attractions and activities:

1. Jugendstilsenteret og KUBE (Art Nouveau Centre)

Start your exploration of Alesund’s Art Nouveau at Jugendstilsenteret Museum, an architectural gem dedicated to Norway’s Art Nouveau style, located just 450 m from the port. As you visit this cultural treasure, you’ll feel just like you have traveled through time, bringing you to an era of outstanding architecture and excellent craftsmanship.

The town of Ålesund underwent a significant transformation after a devastating fire in 1904, which destroyed much of the existing wooden architecture. The reconstruction efforts embraced the Art Nouveau style, and today, Ålesund is recognized as one of the best-preserved Art Nouveau towns in Europe. Each room within Jugendstilsenteret is a testament to the resilience and artistic revival, with period furnishings, ornate decorations, and well-organized displays that provide an insight into the town’s rebirth.

Jugendstilsenteret not only serves as a display of the wonderful Art Nouveau architecture that adorns Alesund’s streets but also as a glimpse into the period’s historical and cultural significance. The façade of the center is a piece of art in and of itself, covered with elaborate features and stylized motifs that distinguish the Art Nouveau movement, known as Jugendstil in Norway.

2. Alesund Town Center

Discover the heart of Alesund in its town center, conveniently located right at the port’s doorstep. You can explore Alesund’s beautiful architecture as you stroll through cobblestone streets adorned with Art Nouveau architectural details.

It’s a great place to explore local cuisine, find traditional Norwegian souvenirs, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Alesund City Hall (Ålesund Rådhus), housed in an imposing building with decorative elements characteristic of the Jugendstil style, overlooks the Alesund cruise terminal.

A beautiful Alesund Church (Ålesund Kirke), built in a Gothic Revival style, is located on a hill offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding islands. Of course, do not miss to visit the above-mentioned Jugendstilsenteret , as well as Alesund Town Park (Byparken), a pleasant park great for relaxing, taking a stroll, and enjoying the outdoors.

4. Trollstigen (Troll’s Path)

Trollstigen is a famous mountain pass and one of the most visited tourist attractions known for its serpentine road with sharp turns and steep inclines. Built in the early 20th century, it winds through rugged mountains and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the spectacular Stigfossen waterfall. The name “Trollstigen” reflects the area’s folklore, with trolls being mythical creatures in Norwegian mythology.

At the top of Trollstigen, there is a modern visitor center that provides information about the history of the road, the surrounding landscape, and the flora and fauna of the region. The visitor center also has a viewing platform offering spectacular panoramic views of the mountains and the Stigfossen waterfall.

The Trollstigen road itself is a thrilling experience for those who enjoy scenic drives. The road is narrow, with steep gradients and sharp turns, making it an exciting and challenging route for drivers. It’s often open only during the summer months due to weather conditions. Trollstigen is located about 1 hour 30 minutes’ drive from Alesund cruise port and the best way to visit is by driving (rent-a-car) or on a guided shore excursion.

When we talk about traveling on a cruise, Alesund is one of those destinations that has it all: stunning nature, history, and unique experiences. So, if you're going to make a stop in this Norwegian corner, there are several must-visit places that are well worth it. To start our guide on what to see in Alesund if your cruise makes a stop or port call, it's important to know a bit about the history of this city:

History of Alesund: A Journey Through Time Alesund , with its distinctive architecture and picturesque location among islands and fjords, is a gem on the west coast of Norway. However, like any city, its current beauty is the result of a rich history and a series of events that have shaped its identity. Although the documented history of Alesund begins in the Middle Ages , the region was inhabited long before. It is believed that the first Viking settlements were established here around 800 AD. These Nordic explorers and traders left their mark on the culture and history of the region. During the Middle Ages, Alesund benefited from its strategic location. Access to the sea and the abundance of marine resources turned the city into an important trading point, especially for fish. Commercial connections with the rest of Europe strengthened, allowing Alesund to grow and prosper. A transformative event in Alesund's history was the great fire on January 23, 1904. In a single night, a devastating fire swept through much of the city, leaving over 10,000 people homeless. However, what could have been a total tragedy turned into an opportunity for rebirth. With international assistance, especially from Germany, Alesund was rebuilt in a completely different architectural style: Art Nouveau or Jugendstil. Talented architects drew inspiration from this modern and ornamental style to design buildings with detailed facades, turrets, and floral motifs. It is this architecture that gives Alesund its distinctive and unique appearance today. Throughout the 20th century, Alesund continued to establish itself as a center of fishing and export , especially of cod. Over time, it also started attracting tourists and adventurers, thanks to its natural beauty and rich history. The city modernized but always retained its essence and connection to the past.

Below, we provide a list of excursions, activities, or places that are recommended to see in Alesund during the day your cruise is in port:

Drenched in charm and history, Alesund is a town and cruise port of call located on the west coast of Norway at the entrance of Geirangerfjord. Get out and explore the beauty of Alesund on one of our Alesund Excursions and Shore Excursions!  A hike to Sukkertoppen (Sugar Top) Mountain rewards some of the best views over the city as does Fjellstua Viewpoint. Adventurous folks can take the 418 steps down into the city center. Another popular vista is from Mt. Aksla which gives epic views over the fjord and the city.  Alesund is actually situated on 7 small islands with some accessible by roads and bridges and one by boat only. There is a lot to see! Alesund started as a fishing village and shipyard; along with tourism, are still the main staples of the industry.

  • 3 hrs Estimate Duration

Start your tour with a drive along the Borgund Fjord, through the modern suburbs to the old trading center of Borgund. Here, you’ll visit the Sunnmore Open-Air Museum where you’ll see various types of farmhouses, boathouses and a number of different boats. Shipbuilding was known to be the most reliable along the coast.

You’ll find replicas of the so called Kvalsund and Fjortoft boats from the year 700 A.D. Alongside lies the fishing vessel Heland known as the Shetland bus, as it was used to carry Norwegian partisans across the North Sea during World War II. Then make a detour up to Mount Aksla to enjoy the magnificent view over the town and surroundings, before returning to your ship.

Tours in Ålesund

Ålesund is the largest city in the province of Møre og Romsdal and built on only islands!

A huge fire burned down the city center in 1904. It was the German emperor Wilhelm II who offered his help to rebuild the city by sending ships with canned food, clothing, construction materials etc. Out of gratitude towards the emperor, the inhabitants named one of the main streets in Ålesund after him, “Keiser Wilhelms Gate”.

The city is famous for its architecture, the Art Nouveau style. In the city center you can find over 400 buildings in this typical architecture. It also has the most important fishing harbour in Norway and the town’s fishing fleet is one of the most modern in Europe.

From Storhaugen you can enjoy the spectacular view over the city and the surrounding islands, including the islands Giske and Godøy. Giske, known for the Duke of Normandy, Rollo and Godøy for its natural beauty and the lighthouse in Alnes. Most of the islands you will see from Storhaugen can actually be reached by car without using a ferry.

Ålesund simply offers you everything: Architecture, history, nature, fjords and mountains and even a peek into the local history at the Sunnmøre Museum or Jugendstil Museum (the Art Nouveau Museum).
