10 of the Best Amboseli Luxury Lodges & Camps

10 of the Best Amboseli Luxury Lodges & Camps

Anthony is a photographer and writer for travel magazines and Lonely Planet, including the guides to Kenya and Botswana & Namibia.

Amboseli National Park may not have the sheer number of lodges and tented camps when compared to, say, the Masai Mara National Reserve, but there are still numerous outstanding choices. Only three of the lodges and camps are inside the national park boundary. The remainder of the Amboseli lodges and camps lie outside the park’s eastern Kimana Gate or on the Maasai-run conservancies or group ranches that surround the reserve to the north and east. Each location has its benefits and all of the lodges and tented camps are excellent. Here is our pick of Amboseli’s luxury accommodation.

Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli

Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli

Tucked away in its very own corner of the national park, Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli is a brilliant choice and the only one of the Amboseli camps that is inside the park. There are jaw-dropping views of Mt Kilimanjaro from many places around camp, and the safari tents are large and supremely comfortable. Although canvas is all that separates you from passing elephants and roaring lions, you’re perfectly safe, and it allows you to be spellbound by the night sounds of Africa while lying in bed. Because you’re a long way from the two lodges that are inside the park, you get to enjoy a quieter start and end to your safari day, with quiet trails around the camp.

Elewana Tortilis Tours

ol Donyo Lodge

ol Donyo Lodge

On Mbirikani Group Ranch, ol Donyo Lodge is one of the best lodges anywhere in Kenya . Everything about this place, which is part of the Great Plains Conservation portfolio of uber-luxurious lodges and camps, is a temple to good taste and sustainability. Rooms are huge and come with incredible views (including of Mt Kilimanjaro). There’s a photographic hide right by a waterhole where elephants come to drink. Activities on offer include walking or horseback-riding safaris, time spent with the Maasai, as well as more traditional game drives.

Campi ya Kanzi

Campi ya Kanzi

Spread out across the foothills of the Chyulu Hills (Ernest Hemingway’s ‘Green Hills of Africa’), Italian- and Maasai-run Campi ya Kanzi has superb safari tents, big Mt Kilimanjaro views, and one of the best kitchens in southeastern Kenya. You can, of course, go on game drives while you’re here, but so much of what they do revolves around fascinating conservation projects and deep ties to the local Maasai community. Walking safaris and village visits here are real highlights.

Porini Amboseli Camp

Porini Amboseli Camp

The only tented camp on the Maasai-run Selenkay Conservancy north of Amboseli National Park , Porini Amboseli Camp has a delightfully strong sense of isolation. You’ll really feel as though there’s nothing between you and the African wild. And on most of your safari trails, you won’t see another vehicle. With an early start, you can visit the national park from here, but elephants, giraffes and lions all inhabit the area around the camp. The chance to spend a little time with the local Maasai is also a feature of staying here.

Ol Tukai Lodge

Ol Tukai Lodge

It’s impossible to be more central inside Amboseli National Park than you are at Ol Tukai. Probably the best of the two Amboseli lodges inside the park, Ol Tukai combines handsome rooms with expansive lawns and fine Kilimanjaro views. You’ll often find yourself swimming in the pool, or enjoying a meal on the open terrace, when an elephant wanders past or, if you’re really lucky, a cheetah streaks across the horizon on the hunt. By staying inside the park itself, you get to begin your game drive each morning while those staying outside the park are still waiting to enter.

Ol Tukai Lodge Tours

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge

Wonderfully positioned in the center of the park, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge belongs in the classic, old-school class of Amboseli lodges in the very best sense. Large rooms with bold safari decor, a decent buffet restaurant, a good pool, a massage center, and nightly entertainment by local cultural groups all make for a terrific base. There are no Kilimanjaro views from the lodge, but there are animals everywhere almost as soon as you leave the lodge car park.

Amboseli Serena Tours

Tawi Lodge

Beautiful Tawi Lodge makes a virtue of its location outside Amboseli National Park’s Kimana Gate. Unlike other Amboseli lodges in the area, Tawi has its own wildlife areas surrounding the lodge. While you’re at Tawi, you’ll sleep in large and lovely thatched-roof bungalows. Many have bathtubs, some have Mt Kilimanjaro views from their terraces, and the grounds include a fine restaurant, spa center and swimming pool. You’ll meet lots of Maasai while you’re here, too, thanks to the lodge’s strong ties with the local community.

Kibo Safari Camp

Kibo Safari Camp

Just 2km/1.2mi east of the national park, Kibo is one of the better Amboseli camps in the area. These are some of the largest safari tents you’ll find anywhere, with tiled floors, animal-skin rugs and rustic wooden furnishings. As you walk around the pretty grounds, you’ll find yourself stopping often to take in the amazing views of Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. And it’s easy to relax in the swimming pool, bar or restaurant.

Kibo Safari Camp Tours

Elerai Camp

Elerai Camp

Elerai Camp takes full advantage of its elevated position east of Amboseli National Park, with some of the best views in the area. Not only can you see Mt Kilimanjaro whenever the weather’s just right, but you’ll be able to look out across the plains of the Amboseli Basin that seem to go on forever. The safari tents have handcrafted wooden furnishings, and there are lodge rooms to choose from as well. When you’re not out exploring, why not cool down in the infinity swimming pool.

Elerai Camp Tours

Amboseli Sopa Lodge

Amboseli Sopa Lodge

Some distance east of the national park, Amboseli Sopa Lodge is one of the longest-standing of the Amboseli lodges. The rooms are nicely spread out, and from the swimming pool and elsewhere you can see Mt Kilimanjaro away on the western horizon. Strong safari colors are a feature of the rooms and public spaces here, and the bar and restaurant are fine places to retreat to when the sun is beating down.

Amboseli Safari Lodge

In the land of giants.

An intimate lodge in the heart of Kimana Sanctuary, Kenya’s first community-owned conservancy, renowned for its lush landscape and remarkable density of wildlife — along with its famed backdrop, Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Set within a Fever Tree forest where some of Africa’s last Super Tuskers roam — elephants with tusks so large they drag along the ground as they walk — Angama Amboseli is a gentle start or finish to any East African safari.

A Wilderness Jewel

With just 10 Guest Suites in a private wildlife conservancy, Angama Amboseli is respite from the world. A haven for the prolific elephant population in this ecosystem, get up close to the relaxed resident herds and their calves as they saunter through the Sanctuary just as you do. The rough texture found on the exterior of the buildings is also a gift from the elephants — their dung, mixed with concrete.

Exclusive traversing rights and unrestricted game viewing, guests can enjoy everything from night drives to early morning Pyjama Safaris

With nods to Angama’s other properties and designed by the same team, the inspiration here is the elephants — their rounded shapes and bold, playful nature

Each Guest Area and Suite has been designed around uninterrupted views of Kili even from the bed to the vanity mirror

Guests can explore Amboseli National Park, a 45-minute drive from the lodge to the gate, home to over 400 bird species and an array of wildlife

Explore the Lodge

The guest suites.

Another contemporary take on African design with nods to the giants of this landscape — including concrete mixed with elephant dung for the unique exterior texture — each of the 10 Suites is a mix of canvas, concrete and stone accented by woven rattan and grass, all in earthy, neutral colours. What’s an Angama suite without a view to wake up to? Each is orientated so that Kili can be seen from nearly every corner — from the bed to the shower — while floor-to-ceiling screened doors are all that lies between you and the mountain.

Guest Areas

‘Kimana’ means ‘a place to stay awhile’ and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do just that. The main Guest Area offers flexible indoor-outdoor dining with a baraza to wind down the days by the fire, telling stories with a drink in hand or marshmallows for roasting. The nearby Studios house a Safari Shop, Games Room, Art Gallery, Weaving Studio and a Photographic Studio, perfect for capturing Amboseli’s iconic scenes.

A special viewing tower built for watching the elephants who like to visit the marsh surrounding it. You’ll see plenty of other wildlife too, including 360 degree views of Kimana, the Chuylus Hills and of course Kili. Come for a picnic lunch, a lazy afternoon with a book, or for sundowners to toast the day.

The Swimming Pool

For cooling off or dozing off, watching the mountain or a little elephant theatre. The raised rim-flow Swimming Pool features a drinking trough just below, made especially for resident herds. It’s perfectly placed as the ellies like to while away the hours in this area of camp, too.

Discover the Location

The sanctuary.

Kimana Sanctuary is the first community conservancy established in Kenya, and is owned by 844 Maasai family members. Thanks to its perennial stream, the Sanctuary boasts the greatest habitat diversity and wildlife density in the area attracting scores of eland, reedbuck, warthogs in their hundreds, along with giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Even the elusive leopard, cheetah and serval can be seen here along with many species of bird.

The Super Tuskers

Elephants are the real stars here as large breeding herds move in procession through the Sanctuary. There’s also a good chance you’ll see one of the famed Super Tuskers — elephants whose tusks weigh more than 100lbs each. Some of the last remaining Tuskers in Africa love to feed on the lush vegetation around the lodge, in particular.

Amboseli National Park

Derived from the Maasai word for ‘salty dust’, Amboseli National Park is just a 45-minute drive from the lodge which guests can enjoy as a half- or full-day excursion with a picnic lunch at a private Angama spot. This is one of the best places in Africa to see huge herds of elephants marching single file across dusty pans or having a bath in the dry lake beds. In the savanna and woodlands, you may spot lion or cheetah, while in the wetlands, hippo, flamingo and some of its other 400-odd species of birdlife can be found.

The Corridor

The entrance to Angama Amboseli is located at the ‘pinch point’ — all that remains of a centuries-old migratory path connecting Amboseli National Park to the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo West National Park. Supported by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, this portion of the corridor is just 85 metres wide at its narrowest, running between agricultural land and across a busy highway making it a striking example of human and wildlife co-existence. The sights and sounds of the neighbouring communities and farms that guests may encounter highlight the complexities of conservation in the 21st century.

Amboseli Experiences

The perfect stay.

We’re often asked, ‘How many days should one stay’? The truth is, there is never enough time, but the perfect stay might look something like this:

Arriving at Kimana’s private airfield, your first glimpse of Angama Amboseli is the sweeping canvas fly sheets tucked into a verdant Fever Tree forest. After a welcome tour and settling into your Suite, enjoy a delicious lunch on the patio of the Guest Area, then get ready for your first bumble in the Sanctuary. A stop for sundowners to toast the first day with Mount Kilimanjaro in necessary, followed by a lantern-lit dinner back at the Guest Area — and maybe a night cap under the stars around the Baraza.

Wake up to the sun illuminating Kili and after an early breakfast, depart for a full-day safari in Amboseli National Park. As you leave, visit the ‘Pinch Point’ — the smallest segment of a critical wildlife corridor.  Spend the day exploring the Park’s famous marshlands and dry lake bed looking for Super Tuskers. After a picnic lunch at a private Angama site, return to the lodge in time for a visit to the Studios. Dinner this evening is served outdoors by the stream — follow the scent of wood-fired pizzas.

Start your day with a gentle guided walk around the Sanctuary, learning about the fauna and flora endemic to the ecosystem, while a surprise picnic breakfast awaits under a Fever Tree. Returning to the lodge, enjoy an in-suite massage or try your hand at watercolour painting on your patio. Take a lazy lunch at the Swimming Pool and spend the afternoon watching the ellies pass by. End the day with sundowners at the Mnara and a night drive before or after your private dinner in the Gallery.

Your Butler gently wakes you with coffee before first light to catch your sunrise hot-air balloon flight. Float along with Kili, admiring the views below before touching down for a champagne breakfast. A much-needed siesta and lunch are followed by an afternoon with our conservation partner, Big Life Foundation — visit HQ for control room and camera-trap monitoring or go out with ranger patrols and canine tracking units. Dinner is served on the private patio of your Guest Suite as the moon rises slowly over Kili.

At dawn, roll out of bed and straight onto the awaiting vehicle for a signature Pyjama Safari. Let the Photographic Studio capture the moment of you posing (or dancing) with Kili in the background. Back at the lodge, it’s time to freshen-up and pack before breakfast in the Guest Area and a gentle drive to the airfield for your onward flight.

How to Get There

There are daily scheduled flights with Safarilink landing at Kimana Airfield in the Sanctuary, as well as Amboseli National Park, about a 1h drive. Private charters are always welcome at the Sanctuary’s airfield, whether to or from the Mara or Naiorbi. Its also an easy 3h30min drive on a paved road  from Nairobi to the gate.

Static Image

Angama Amboseli Details

Angama Amboseli is an intimate lodge with 10 en-suite Guest Suites, with a maximum number of 20 guests. Each Suite has floor-to-ceiling screened doors to make the most of the views of Kili and there are two sets of two interconnected Suites.

Kenya is classified as a malaria area. We recommend that guests contact their local medical clinic for professional advice, and that they obtain comprehensive travel insurance, including health cover, prior to travelling. Insect repellent is provided at all Angama properties.

Amboseli enjoys a warm and temperate climate all year round. Summer months are October to April with temperatures of min 17°C/62°F and max 30°C/86°F; Winter is usually from May to September with temperatures of min 14°C/57°F and max 24°C/75°C.

AFRICANMECCA REVIEWS

five star africanmecca safaris reviews

Jambo Raza, I think I speak for both of us when I say that this was one of the best trips of our lives. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable -- Steven, in Amboseli, was particularly outstanding.

Scott Aaronson - Associate Professor, M.I.T - Boston, United States

On behalf of myself, my wife and my two adult daughters, I want to sincerely thank you and AfricanMecca Safaris for our fabulous recent safari to Amboseli National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

Robert Schenkein - prVision Photography Studio - Colorado, United States

Jambo Altaf, Many thanks for a brilliant holiday. Your choice of tented accommodation at the two Tsavos and Amboseli was superb, we didn't have a favourite. We would recommend AfricanMecca to anyone.

Geoffrey Topliss - Northampton, United Kingdom

The animals at Amboseli were amazing. We saw live wildebeest births, a pack of hyenas looking for a kill. Thank you to AfricanMecca for helping us plan the trip/honeymoon of a lifetime!

Holly & Michael Lapidus - New Jersey, United States

It was a terrific trip to the Masai Mara - Governors Il Moran, Amboseli - Elerai Camp, Zanzibar - Ras Nungwi & Zanzibar Serena Inn - one we will always remember. Thank you for everything.

Bow & Sandy Bowman - California, United States

Raza and AfricanMecca Safaris did an outstanding job with all of the arrangements lined up to help make our trip unforgettable. We do thank you from the bottom of our heart.

Kim and Mike Claiborne - Texas, United States

Our trip was outstanding. Amboseli National Park was one of our favorite places. There was a diversity of landscape, with marsh area as well as bush country. We saw numerous elephants close up.

amboseli safari lodge

Where to start from? This Hotel is magnificent! Since the pick up from the airstrip to the very little detail inside the room, it has been a perfect experience. Location is beautiful, in the middle of the nature respecting its environment and yet making the most comfortable rooms and social living rooms. Birds, squirrels and little monkeys come to your window and you can see the Kilimanjaro mount through your door! The pool is gorgeous, the food is great and the game drives are amazing! Staff is so committed on making unforgettable memories. I wanted to see hippos, so they searched all over until we saw one. Plus, rangers know a lot about the park so they give great explanations and knows the perfect spots to find the animals. Also about the staff: they are super polite, super friendly, always asking whether you need something. Manager is super nice! he helped us printing some papers we needed. the SPA service is amazing! Totally worth the money. I recomend this Hotel to everyone and I will definetly come back with my family.

Sentrim Amboseli Lodge

amboseli safari lodge

Excellent stay at Sentrim, couldn't fault it on value for money, service and location

Ol Tukai Lodge Amboseli

Located in the heart of the Amboseli National Park and offering stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Ol Tukai Lodge Amboseli offers a pool, restaurant and guest lounge. Ol Tukai Lodge Amboseli offers a restaurant and 2 bars for snacks and drinks. The dining room opens onto a veranda in the garden.

amboseli safari lodge

The location is truly unbelievable. You can walk out of your room to see Mount Kilimanjaro (when there are no clouds) or so many animals at the fence line (saw baby elephants, Zebras, Buffalos, Wildabest, Hippos, and more). The staff went above and beyond, they were knowledgeable and friendly, and they even tracked my flight arrangements for me. I very much appreciated that the food is buffet style (plus delicious), and the activities such as the game drives are very reasonably priced as are the extra drinks! I am a tough critic who has traveled the world and this place sticks out as one of the best. If you are looking for a place to stay in Amboseli, you can stop your search. I kept debating my choice when I was looking but I am so glad I went with my gut instinct. I would go back and I would love to bring my family one day. I will highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Kenya. This place is worth the value.

Amboseli Eco Camp

Situated in the heart of the Maasai Land, 20 kilomètres from Amboseli National Park, Amboseli Eco Camp features a restaurant. The daily breakfast offers continental and buffet options. The camp is now directly owned and managed by the community for the community.

amboseli safari lodge

Good value for your money. Nice breakfast.

Amboseli Sopa Lodge

Amboseli Sopa Lodge offers accommodation, a restaurant, a bar, a shared lounge and a garden. Both WiFi and private parking are accessible at the lodge free of charge. Buffet and Full English/Irish breakfast options are available every morning at Amboseli Sopa Lodge .

The grounds were beautiful, the views of Mt Kilimanjaro were breath taking, the pool was one of the nicest I have ever been in. We traveled with our kids, but my wife commented on how romantic it would be as just a couple. The food is incredible and plentiful. They will even pack you a big lunch if you're doing a full day game drive. The Masai on site are friendly and fun. And there are happy hour drinks and snacks everywhere you turn.

Kibo safari camp.

Kibo Safari Camp lies within the Amboseli National Reserve with splendid views of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.

Amboseli, meaning “salty dust” in maa, the language of the Maasai, is a place of stark contrast. The park provides the classic Hollywood image of Africa. Set in rolling savannah scenery the park is dwarfed by the presence of the pink-tinged, snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

“In sync with Nature”

Kibo is special. This lovely gem nestled in the Amboseli National Park caters for the traveller who wants to enjoy nature in all its fullness. Their are tents as well as lodge rooms which give you a sense that you are in the wild-and still with all the proper necessities one needs e.g. hot water, mosquito nets and every tent has a veranda outside that faces Africa’s highest mountain. Was referred to the place by their Facebook page that has adequate information and I have to admit, my time there was nothing but lovely. I enjoyed the food too as well as their highly refreshing swimming pool.

David J. Nairobi, Kenya

“Excellent!”

The best service, very good and fresh food, very clean and value of everything. A very nice pool area with a spa, the bar attendant Morris, is extremely courteous and efficient. The Camp has a vegetables garden…for any family or group safari this will be ideal place to stay.

RoseMuriuki Nairobi, Kenya

“Great place to stay”

I’ve been here twice now and for good reason. The tents are roomy, well appointed, and clean. The grounds offer a few places to stretch the legs and a pool. The food is excellent and varied, and it tends to be a little busier than other camps, which I enjoy as it keeps the atmosphere lively while never feeling crowded. We happened to be there over Christmas and the festive dinners and vibe were great! Lots of fun.

This project is part of the thriving Moscow City mixed-use district—centrally located within the sprawling Russian metropolis—the design of which is similar to London’s Canary Wharf and Paris’s La Défense. An 85-story skyscraper and a 49-story office tower soar from a 7-story transparent crystalline base, gradually tapering away from each other as they rise. Designed by US-based architectural and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill—renowned for its iconic towers, including Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building—the OKO Tower complex laid the groundwork for a new era in contemporary Russian development. At 1,150 feet high, and with a total area of 4,300,000 square feet, the OKO South Tower is not only the largest skyscraper in Moscow, but also the highest residential tower in Europe. The complex also has the biggest parking area in Moscow, with 15 levels for 3,500 parking spaces.

Residential and office lobbies have elegant interiors by Italy-based designer Massimo Iosa Ghini. With leading engineering solutions and security systems, 24/7 services, restaurants and bars, a private cinema hall, a luxurious spa and fitness center, and a private landscaped park, OKO Tower offers the ultimate in comfort and activity. The key-ready residential apartments boast designer interiors and stunning panoramic views of the Moskva River, the Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrow Hills) park, the Kremlin and the skyscrapers of Moscow City.
