The Value of College Tours

a student tour guide leads a group of visitors across the quad on a sunny day

A lot of college students will understand that making a decision about which college to attend requires a ton of careful consideration. One way to learn more information that factors into a final decision about which college to attend is by visiting the college in person and taking a college tour. Sure, you can see photos and videos of the college online and read about what the college has to offer, but the opportunity to talk to a current student and see the college in person is invaluable.

I’m fortunate I could tour Amherst before I decided to commit. Although most people tour colleges during junior or senior years, I toured Amherst the summer before my sophomore year. My dad was visiting Boston for a work conference, so the rest of my family and I decided to tag along and take the opportunity to visit some colleges. So, I toured many colleges around Boston and toured Amherst since I was interested in attending a liberal arts college. I’m grateful to have toured early on in my high school career because, starting the spring semester of my sophomore year, the pandemic made it hard to travel, and many colleges, including Amherst, stopped offering in-person tours, opting to offer virtual tours instead.

Truthfully, I don’t remember much from my Amherst tour because it happened more than 4 years ago (wow, writing that made me feel old!), but I remember bits and pieces that stuck with me. One thing that stood out was that the Amherst tour guide was willing to answer questions with their own experience and personalized the tour. They were super friendly and easy to talk to, making the tour stand out from the other tours I attended at other colleges. Another thing that stood out from the Amherst tour was the architecture of the buildings. I distinctly remember walking into the Science Center, Greenway Dorms, and Beneski Museum and being blown away by the design. My memories of these buildings greatly influenced my decision to attend Amherst.

As a current student at Amherst, I’ve seen the value of a tour from a college student’s perspective. Sure, it might feel strange to be sitting in a classroom and see a group of touring students walk past your classroom, but I know many students who work as tour guides, and all of them are passionate about Amherst and know so much about the college. I love getting to wave to them and seeing them on tours out and about on campus, and it’s always great to see how much fellow students want to help out high school students with their college decisions!

Master of Health Administration graduate to continue career with fellowship at McLeod Health

Madison Paternostros

May 2, 2024  | Erin Bluvas,  [email protected]

Growing up in Hamilton, New Jersey, Madison Paternostro was well aware of her good fortune. A supportive family, good health and food on the table sparked her passion to give back – making her motto: “To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48).

During her bachelor’s program at High Point University, she realized that working in the health care field was the best way to do that. Serving nutritious meals to homeless families at a local shelter opened Paternostro’s eyes to the social determinants of health and the safety nets within the health care and social work systems that work to address them.

The USC MHA program directly aligned with my values in terms of professional development and experiential learning. I liked that the program was cohort style, making it easy to build comradery with my classmates, who will soon become my professional peers.

Her degree in business administration – coupled with a minor in health care management – triggered an interest in understanding the roles of health care systems as drivers of community health. She knew a Master of Health Administration program was the best path to explore these dynamics, and USC’s stood out as one of the best.

“The USC MHA program directly aligned with my values in terms of professional development and experiential learning,” Paternostro says. “I liked that the program was cohort style, making it easy to build comradery with my classmates, who will soon become my professional peers.”

As a student in the Department of Health Services Policy and Management , Paternostro developed an interest in clinical operations within health systems – particularly at outpatient facilities where patients receive most of their care. With the opportunity for clinicians to make a significant impact during their interactions with patients at these visits, she believes this setting is a key part of the patient’s care journey and is confident that she can play an important role in the management of daily operations while also leading larger projects to improve patient experiences.

Madison Paternostro

In addition to serving as president for the USC Healthcare Leadership Association and volunteering at Ronald McDonald House in Prisma Health Children’s Hospital, Paternostro also gained practical experience as a graduate assistant with McLeod Health. Working with the associate vice presidents within the physician network, she learned the ins and outs of clinical operations in outpatient settings. The experience set her apart when looking for post-graduation fellowships and helped her land an Administrative Residency with McLeod.

"Administrative fellowships allow for the opportunity to rotate and complete projects within various departments of a health care system and build networks,” says Paternostro, who will begin the 18-month fellowship after graduating in May. “After my residency, I would like to step into an administrator role where I manage multiple practices within the same or similar specialties. I think my degree will help me progress into higher management positions, and in the future, I see myself as a senior administrator of a physician network or health system.

She loves that many of the MHA program’s course instructors are health care professionals working in the field of the classes they teach – bringing real experiences and applications to the curriculum. The AUPHA Foster G. McGaw Scholarship Award winner found a mentor in clinical assistant professor Melinda Merrell , who helped her navigate the program and push herself to pursue new opportunities. She says she’ll miss the USC campus and living right by the capitol building in the Main Street District.

“My favorite time of year to be a Gamecock is the fall because football is every Saturday, and it is a great way to get together with friends and show your school spirit,” Paternostro says. “Having never lived in a city, it has been great to be able to walk everywhere. I also enjoy exercising, and with the river close by, there are so many beautiful trails to run on.”

Scharrer and Shoub Receive 2024 Outstanding Research Award

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's Outstanding Research Award: Erica Scharrer, professor of communication, and Kelsey Shoub, assistant professor of public policy and undergraduate program director. This award, which includes a $1,000 prize and a plaque, recognizes distinguished achievement in scholarship and research by tenure-line faculty within the College.

Professor Erica Scharrer was nominated for the Outstanding Research Award for her impressive track record of excellence in research and scholarship over the past five years. In 2021, Professor Scharrer received the Distinguished Community-Engaged Research Award at UMass, which recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions to community-engaged research with local, regional, national, or international impacts. The International Communication Association (ICA), the most prominent international association for communication scholars, named Professor Scharrer as a fellow in 2022. ICA also presented Professor Scharrer with the Senior Scholar Award from the Children, Adolescents, and Media division of ICA in 2023.

In addition to Professor Scharrer's many accolades for her research, her most recent book, "Quantitative Research Methods in Communication: The Power of Numbers for Social Justice," advances principles and practices to conduct quantitative research from a critical theory-informed, social justice lens. In addition, she has co-authored two book chapters on research methods, one on social justice and quantitative methods and another on rethinking methods in media effects research. Beyond the valuable information Professor Scharrer has provided to her peers, she also has a track record of pursuing community engagement work, showing a solid commitment to informing experts and the public of important communication research.

Professor Kelsey Shoub was nominated for her outstanding and prolific research record, which is especially impressive for someone who received their PhD in 2018. Her work has contributed significantly to academic and public understanding of race, gender, and policing and how language about policy shapes public understanding. "Suspect Citizens: What 20 Million Traffic Stops Tells Us About Policing & Race," a 2018 book co-authored by Professor Shoub, utilized data from 20 million traffic stops in North Carolina to demonstrate how ubiquitous racial disparities are within police forces and how greater political representation within Black communities offers a way to address such disparities.

In addition to co-authorship of such an important book, in 2021, Professor Shoub was awarded the Herbert Kaufman Best Paper Award from the American Political Science Association's Section on Public Administration for her article "Do Female Officers Police Differently? Evidence from Traffic Stops." She has also published thirteen peer-reviewed articles in excellent journals, including the American Journal of Political Science, American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Journal of Public Administration Research & Theory, and Journal of Public Policy , just to name a few. According to the Web of Science, she has been cited more than 200 times and already has an H-index of 5, which is quite an accomplishment for a researcher so early in their career.

SBS is proud of the extraordinary research efforts put forth by Professors Scharrer and Shoub. The SBS Outstanding Research Award is presented annually to those who either self-nominate or are nominated by their peers. Please visit the SBS website for the complete award requirements and a list of all past winners.

Saratov is a major city in southern Russia. The city was initially founded in the 16th century as a fortress to protect the southern districts of the Russian Empire. Situated on the Volga River, Saratov was a major military aircraft manufacturing site, the home of the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, and a vital part of the Soviet space program. There is a museum dedicated to Gagarin and his life. Saratov has a rich cultural life, as well - among the most famous sites is the Conservatoire designed in a Neo-Gothic style as well as the Drama Theatre named after Ivan Slonov, one of the oldest theatres in Russia. For those interested in art there is the Radischev Art Museum with more than 20,000 exhibits. Of other interest, the community of Volga Germans was centred in the Saratov region. In the early 20th century over 800,000 ethnic Germans made their home in this area preserving many of their German customs.

There are flights and trains from Moscow to Saratov, but is normally visited as part of a river cruise. The embankments along the Volga give some spectacular views including the ‘Old Bridge’ which was the longest bridge in Europe until the 1980s.
