1. What is the procedure to obtain clearances of Tour and Travel Agent/Tourist Transport Operator Registration?

The entire process of registration has been made online by a & n admin. properties can be registered online for (a) new registration or (b) renewal of registration. the following steps have to be followed for both types:.

• While applying online, owner has to choose the ‘Category” of establishment as “Bronze”, “Silver” or “Gold”. Along with online application, owner should also Upload Supporting Documents in the portal
• After successful submission, portal will generate a Unique Application No, which is to be noted for future reference and tracking
• The Owner can download the filled in Application form from portal
• The DoT will verify the online application and documents submitted in the portal and update “Status of Application” as below. The Owner can view Status of his/her application from the portal directly: “Accepted” – The application will Proceed to Step – 3 below. “Rejected” – The application is rejected with “Reasons” as displayed in portal. The Owner has to apply again for new application
• For all applications “Accepted” in Step – 2 above, DoT will undertake Physical inspection of the establishment, to confirm that all requirements for Registration are met. The DoT will update the portal with “Status of Inspection” as below: “Accepted” – The application will Proceed to Step – 4 below. “Rejected” – The application is rejected with “Reasons” as displayed in portal. The Owner has to apply again for new application.
• The portal will automatically generate “Registration Certificate” for all Approved applications

About Government Ferries

Government ferries are the lifeline of the islands and are extensively used by locals..

They are what trains, metros and buses are in any Indian city – a subsidized, well connected, mostly comfortable, sometimes overcrowded, but necessary form of public transport. The Andaman and Nicobar administration has regular ferry services linking Islands to its capital city, Port Blair.

Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) & Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island) are the most popular islands of South Andaman. As these islands are tourist dense, they also generate employment for locals. Hence they are connected by both government and privately operated ferries. Other Islands of tourist interest such as Long Island, Rangat, Mayabunder, Diglipur, Little Andaman etc., are serviced by government ferries only operated by DSS (Directorate of shipping Services).

Andaman Government Ferry Services

Government ferries in Andaman are operated by the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS). The department primarily operates for the convenience of local islanders. Since this is the only way of transportation for the islanders, tickets are highly subsidized for them. Residents also have a decent local knowledge which makes using government ferries convenient for them. 

Though slightly cheaper in comparison to the private ferries, government Ferry booking is not available on our platform as we think that from a tourist’s point of view, it’s not the most feasible way. However they’re available everyday and depart from Phoenix Bay Jetty.

Traveling in a Government ferry is not simple but can be made possible with some planning. A bit of research on the ferry timings and availability can save you unnecessary stress and disappointment during your holiday.

The schedules for these ferries are subject to change and are published in the local newspaper every day. If travelling to Havelock or Neil Island (Swaraj and Shaheed Dweep) and have limited time at hand, we suggest you opt for a private ferry.

Difference between Private Ferry & Government Ferry in Andaman

The private ferries are the more preferred mode of inter island travel by tourists. Private ferry tickets range from Rs. 800 to Rs. 3000 depending upon the class of travel.

They are clean and comfortable with air conditioning. they are faster than government ferries, are equipped with onboard assistance and have canteens/food counters available, so you don’t have to worry if you crave for a grub mid-voyage. Booking a private ferry ticket is simple and almost always guarantees a confirmed ticket. 

Government ferries on the other hand are favorites amongst the locals. There are two fare categories one is islander fare (Rs.85 onwards) and the other is non-islander fare (Rs. 450 onwards).

Only a few seats are reserved for tourists and getting them is a challenge. Also, the onboard experience may not be as pleasant as private carriers. Some government ferries are old, slow and seats may seem uncomfortable without cushioning. Although the Government ferries are a decent bargain, tickets in Government ferries are not guaranteed and lack of online booking facility is a bummer! The good part though is the local experience and the open deck.

Private Ferry & Govt Ferry: Which one should you book?

When to opt for a Private Ferry? If you are traveling in Andamans and have your itinerary planned, consider taking a private ferry with confirmed tickets. Private ferries are also recommended if you’re looking for an experience or if you’re traveling with family.

When to opt for a Govt Ferry? On the contrary, if you are on an unplanned vacation and have no fixed itinerary or you are a backpacker on a shoestring budget, or for that matter, working here you may want to consider booking your tickets on a government ferry.

How to book Government ferry tickets in Andamans?

Government ferry tickets are available at the DSS Counters (STARS) at Phoenix Bay Jetty and CSC (Common Service Center) at numerous locations. For ferry schedule, please visit the Official Andaman Govt website .

• STARS Offline Counter timings for reservation of Ship Tickets are between 09:00 am and 04:00 pm from Monday to Friday & between 09:00 am and 12:00 pm on Saturday. Sundays are off.
• E-Ticketing timing for reservation of Ship Tickets is 09:00 am to 04:00 pm daily.
• Passengers are required to enter valid ID proof and carry the same ID in original during embarkation.
• In Inter-Island bound vessels, baggage upto 40 kg for Cabin class, 30 kg for Bunk class and 25 kg for Deck class passengers is allowed.
• Be sure to report 2 hrs prior to the scheduled sailing. Embarkation gates close 30 minutes prior depature.

The Step by Step Guide to Booking Government Ferry in Andaman

Step 1: Create an account or log in to the STARS DSS e-ticketing Website .

Step 2: Enter your journey details.

Step 3: Choose the vessel, check availability and fare.

Step 4: Enter passenger details.

Step 5: Recheck and confirm all the details.

Step 7: You’ll receive the tickets on your registered email and mobile number.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

• In case of any voyage cancellation from DSS, a full refund will be initiated.
• In case of delays over 6 hours, a full refund will be initiated.
• Cancellation needs to be done online only. Cancellation is not facilitated at the STARS counter.
• Cancellation stands unavailable 2 hrs prior to actual sailing time.

Government Ferry Routes and Destinations

Govt ferry to swaraj dweep (havelock).

Government ferries ply to Swaraj Dweep twice daily at 06:20 Hrs and 14:00 Hrs from Phoenix Bay Jetty. This two and half hour ferry ride costs around Rs. 400. A passenger service fee of Rs. 50 is added if you get your tickets booked from the CSC’s. Tickets are available two days prior to departure. You might have to stand in unmanaged queues for long hours to get your hands on the tickets.

Govt Ferry to Little Andaman (Hutbay)

The Directorate of Shipping Services operates Government ferries to Little Andaman from Port Blair daily. The ticket cost varies from Rs. 150 to Rs. 1500 depending upon the class and takes about 8 hours to reach(120 kms from Port Blair). Coral Queen is the most preferred ship; it is well maintained with comfortable bunks and cabins. It also serves snacks onboard. Tickets to Hutbay are available at the DSS Counters or CSC’s.

Govt Ferry to North Andaman (Long Island, Rangat, Mayabunder & Diglipur)

There are ferries from Port Blair to Long Island operating thrice a week. They stop over at Swaraj Dweep (Havelock ) & Shaheed Dweep (Neil ) Islands. Rangat is connected from Port Blair as well as Swaraj Dweep (Havelock) & Shaheed Dweep (Neil) Islands. Ferries to Rangat ply 4 to 5 times a week. Diglipur is the northernmost part of Andaman which has ferry services from Port Blair twice a week. 

Ferry to Ross Island

There are no government ferries to Ross Island, however many private boat operators arrange a day trip to Ross & North Bay Islands. The tour cost starts from Rs 100 to Ross Island and goes up to Rs 600 for 3 islands package tour (Ross, North Bay & Viper Islands).

• There are 30+ ships that operate through DSS (Directorate of Shipping Services). All these ships have different makes and are of different speeds. Find out name of ship and the time taken to reach the destination.
• When issuing a ticket, check which class is given. For short trips an AC chair would be ideal but for A long trip you might want the cabin/sleeper class.
• When onboard, do not miss the open deck.
• Always carry a bedsheet/travel pillow with you – specially on long ferry trips.
• Find out if the ferry has a canteen. Many do not – so carry enough food.
• Some ferries are line ferries – that is, they stop at different islands on the way – these ferries take very long and are best avoided if you have another option. Direct ferries are the best.
• You can request the captain to let you inside the control room and show you around the ship. A smile and honest conversation always helps.
• When onboard, make conversation with the local sitting next to you – there is so much to learn about/from island life.

Jet Ski Ride

Jet Ski is one of the most adventurous water sports activity. Most of the tourist use to have enjoyed this water sport. This water activity adventure is available at Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex.

A nominal rate is charged for this sport and after dressing up in a proper suit and heading the instructor’s advice you are ready to zip around on a Jet Ski. Do not ignore the advice and try not to get carried away by the high speed and excitement. A Jet Ski ride is safe and is handled by a certified rider and utmost care is taken regarding the safety of the tourist by the way of providing life Jackets. Remember to wear a life jacket and that it is the best enjoyed on a good day. During the monsoon, rains, and storms it can be a dangerous thing to go Jet Skiing. The Jet Ski is capable of reaching very high speeds and thus it is advisable that you go along with an instructor if you are trying this for the first time. Out of all the adventure activity in Andaman, Jet Skiing definitely stands out. However, the sport is best to enjoy during good weather only. Jet Skies are not difficult to drive, however, it needs proper caution from the driver. The thrill of cruising through the sea on a Jet Ski, with wind hitting you hard on your face, is truly mesmerizing for every adventure seeker, whether teenager or adult.

Seakart is a state of the art water sports craft. Bearing resemblance to go-kart, the Seakart is 3.5 m long and 2 m wide and offers great stability and comfort to the patrons onboard.

With a steering wheel, a paddle accelerator and push button engine on/off, the Seakart is extremely easy to drive. A Seakart can seat 3 people. One seat will be occupied by licensed instructor while the other two can be tourists. The licensed instructor will serve as a guide and supervisor whilst you drive your own Seakart. At Seakart Adventure Andamans, you get 30 minutes of excursion time starting from Corbyn’s Cove Beach till near Ross Island & back. A long route gives you and your companion ample time to drive, enjoy and explore the magnificent coasts of Port Blair. Dos and Don’ts: 1. Participate only after a thorough reading about the activity. Refrain from participation if you are apprehensive. 2. In no case shall pregnant women, physically/mentally challenged persons, children below 6 years and adults above the age of 60 be allowed to participate. 3. The minimum age for driving Seakart is 18 years and maximum age is 60 years. However, children aged 6-17 years can sit on Seakart and participate as a joy ride along with a parent/guardian.

Scuba Diving

Diving in Andamans is an unique lifetime experience. The coastal water surrounding these islands is the abode of one of the richest coral reef ecosystem in the world.

The specialty is that, here the coral reefs and underwater formation are undamaged by human activity.For adventure lovers there is no greater adventure than diving. Whether one is a novice or one had been diving to fathoms, there is always something new, fascinating or challenging about venturing into the water world. Your mind could be mesmerized by clouds of colorful fishes, your curiosity aroused by the mysterious remains of sunken ships or your creativity invoked by the art of underwater photography. One's diving interest may range from a casual pastime pursued on vacation to a constant passion or even a professional career. Diving offers something unique to everyone. Diving in Andaman and Nicobar islands is exceptional. The costal belt surrounding these islands is the abode of one of the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world. The distinction is that here the coral reefs and underwater formations are untouched by human activities. The best season for diving is considered between December and April.

Andaman forest trekking is commenced from the rocky terrains, rough trekking trails of Mount Harriet to Madhuban, a 16-kilometre trek at South Andaman. Saddle peak, being the highest peak of Andaman with an elevation of 732 meters above sea level, its dense forest offers the spectacular vision of valleys, and also there are huts, benches kept for taking a repose. Andaman forest trekking may extend up to a week depending upon the extent of adventure a traveller seeking for or according to the tour packages of Andaman. Watch of wild creatures, exotic varieties of flora and fauna, tranquil water bodies, and chirruping of birds are the gift of a trekking in Andaman. Guided trekking is offered to the avid adventurers and Chidiya tapu is the bird's paradise where trekking is made possible, finally to reach Kalapahad. Another trekking trail is from Havelock passing through the mangrove meshes to reach Elephant beach. Andaman archipelago is rich in unique wild fauna hidden deep in the thick forests of mountains.

Game Fishing

A fishing adventure in Andaman is an experience unlike any other. The archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar is one of the best destinations for popping and jigging in whole of South East Asia due to a large quantity..

The 30ft ‘Halcyon III’ and the 37ft ‘Rampage,’ are chosen as fast game-fishing vessels to reach remote areas of Ritchie’s Archipelago and the South Andaman Islands and for a long day trips to Barren Island and Invisible Bank.

Apart from Aberdeen Bazaar, Andaman Handicraft Emporium and the Sagarika Government Emporium, Goalghar, Junglighat, Prem Nagar and Delanipur also also offer seashell articles, souvenir items and handicraft. In Sagarika Government Emporium and the Andaman Handicrafts Emporium, one can find beautiful wood carvings, bamboo and cane furniture, shell jewellery, curio. All incoming passengers above 02 years of age including partially and fully vaccinated arriving at VSI Airport, Port Blair have to mandatorily carry RT-PCR negative test report issued from an ICMR recognized laboratory within 48 hours before commencement of journey.

Passengers with a history of foreign travel in the last 30 days, all unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers shall also be tested by RT-PCR on arrival at VSI Airport, Port Blair and they have to strictly self isolate themselves till the receipt of negative RT-PCR report.

If the passenger on arrival is tested positive then, the prescribed quarantine protocol is to be followed.

Ships for Andaman sail from the major cities of Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair and sail back with a frequency of approximately three to four times in a month. However, from Visakhapatnam, you can avail a journey by ship only once a month. Your journey by ship will last around 3-4 days, continuing for about 50-60 hours. The ships usually make a stop at Port Blair for 2-4 days.

Ships to the Andaman Islands depart from ports like Chennai, Kolkata and Vizag. The schedule can vary, and there might not be daily services. It is advisable to check the DSS website or contact them to be updated about the most recent schedule.
