Beach at sunset

Life in Hawaii is rooted in the belief that all living things are inextricably connected. Whether surfing in Waikiki on Oahu, discovering temples in the Kaloko-Honokahau National Park, or hula-ing in Honolulu, expect to feel the welcoming spirit of aloha - sharing the essence of life - in abundance. In New Zealand, a country as renowned for its showstopping glacial mountain peaks and high-drama valleys as its residents’ down-to-earth attitude, twin Maori culture with Mother Nature in the Bay of Islands, hiking through Maori villages and spotting pods of bottlenose dolphins offshore. During your travels Down Under, wonder at Australia’s art through-the-ages, from Aboriginal bark paintings through to contemporary ceramics at the Newcastle Art Gallery, food safari around Sydney’s culinary hotspots - or adopt a laid-back Aussie attitude and spend time relaxing on its famous beaches.

From delicious poke bowls (commonly made with raw tuna or octopus) - to lau lau - pork and butterfish wrapped in taro leaves and steamed - seafood plays an important part of Hawaiian cuisine, and fish dishes are sensational. For dessert, don’t miss playful shaved ice cones, topped with tropical syrups and red adzuki beans. In French Polynesia, toast spectacular sunsets with mai tai rum cocktails or coconut water, feast on juicy mangoes and rambutan fruit, and try local specialty poulet fafa , a chicken, coconut milk and taro stew. Asia’s treasures: Island hops and city stops

Shore-fire Winners

Inhabited since prehistoric times, the 17,000 islands of the Indonesian archipelago have a history as diverse as its golden sands, vivid blue waters and volcanic mountains. Some three hundred different native languages are spoken here, and agriculture - seen in its vivid paddy fields - still plays an important role. A key destination along historical trading routes, ancient Buddhist temples, churches and mosques reflect Indonesia’s time under European and Asian rule. In the Philippines, visit mega-metropolis Manila where skyscrapers rub up against the 16th-century walled city of Intramuros, while in Beijing, feel the presence of Ming and Qing dynasties in the Forbidden City, and wonder at the Great Wall. Simultaneously intoxicatingly futuristic and rooted in history, you’ll get to know Japan’s crumbling castles and vermillion-hued shrines, alongside Tokyo’s city thrum.

Great Wall of China

A real cultural melting pot, Asia has plenty to enthrall, and at every stop you’ll uncover a different side to this captivating region. Connect with Indonesia’s spiritual side in Bali, visiting sacred temples such as Caow Eng Bio - a Buddhist holy site with color-popping pagodas - and soul-stirring Uluwatu - set on a dramatic clifftop with stretching Indian Ocean views. In China, where old-meets-new, expect to be just as wowed by Beijing’s imperial palaces as Hong Kong’s towering skyscrapers. Whether you’re sipping a brew at a theatrical tea ceremony in Shizuoka, or making lacquered chopsticks using Edo-era techniques, a Japan vacation brims with artistry. In Tokyo, embrace the country’s deep connection with nature, forest bathing near Meiji Shrine, and shop for all-things kawaii (cute) on kitsch and colorful Takeshita Street.

Loosen your belt; Asian cuisine is across-the-board divine. In Hindu Bali, try Babi guling , whole-roasted suckling pig, Indonesian gado-gado - a mixed vegetable salad served with tempeh (fermented soy beans), hard-boiled eggs, tofu and a peanut dressing. Unmissable Filipino dishes include sinigang, a sour meat or seafood soup made with tamarind and vegetables, and kinilaw - raw fish doused in the juice of tangy local citrus fruit calamansi . From crispy eomuk  fish cakes and kimchi (spicy, fermented cabbage) in Korea’s Haeundae Market washed down with punchy shots of soju , to dinky dim sum bites in Hong Kong and China’s night markets, Asia’s street food is sensational. Dining in Japan is a gastrophile’s dream; expect top-quality cuts of Kobe and Wagyu beef, artwork-like sushi, comforting bowls of ramen noodles, tempura’d vegetables and dango , brightly-colored skewers of chewy, sweet rice balls.

Get to know the peaceful beaches of Nusa Dua, or kayak through mangrove forest in Bali. Explore Manila by horse-drawn carriage, swoon at the grand San Agustin Church or head souvenir shopping in Makati’s trendy shopping malls. Awake your adventurous spirit in Subic Bay, hiking rainforest trails and learning traditional survival skills from the Aetas people. Head up high in Hong Kong aboard the Peak Tram to the top of 1800-foot Victoria Peak, or climb to new heights summiting Taipei’s 101 Tower. Stretch out on blissful white sands as you travel through the Okinawa Islands, aka ‘Japan’s’ Hawaii,' before witnessing the astonishing feat of human artistry that is The Great Wall of China. On Korea’s Jeju Island venture underground to Manjanggul Cave, one of the world’s longest lava tubes, and wonder at Japanese mist-shrouded icon Mount Fuji.

Fall for South East Asia & India

Be awed SE Asia & India

Whether you’re wandering the peaceful Hai Duc and Long Son pagodas in Nha Trang or visiting the poignant War Remnants Museum or Cu Chi Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City, your journey through Vietnam will illuminate the country’s complex past. With its gleaming skyscrapers and Supertrees which cleverly convert sunlight into energy, Singapore’s unapologetically futuristic, but its pastel-fronted shophouses with Malay, Chinese and European influences, intricately-carved Hindu temples and gold-domed Sultan Mosque represent its multicultural heritage. As you cruise up the Strait of Malacca, wonder at the modern and the Moorish in Malaysia, before discovering Sri Lanka’s sacred temples, fortresses and fringing beaches. As you travel through India, get lost in the awe-inducing Mughal architecture of the Taj Mahal, before marveling at Mumbai's historic arches and seaside temples. Finally, learn about the Bedouin roots of the ultra-modern UAE.

Water Feature

Strap in and prepare to be amazed; there’s culture in every corner of Southeast Asia and the Subcontinent. In Vietnam - where respect for elders, and spirituality is paramount - wonder at the sandy-colored Po Nagar Cham Towers in Nha Trang, dating from the 700s it’s an important place of Buddhist worship today. In Malaysia marvel at the world’s tallest twin towers, visit a world-class Islamic Arts Museum, and admire Penang’s contemporary street art. During your vacation time in historic trading port Colombo in Sri Lanka take in bright Buddhist temples, tuk-tuk-filled streets, historic fortresses and colonial-era villas. As for India? Marvel at Mughal design masterpiece The Taj Mahal, beach-hop in laid-back Goa, or shop for Bollywood memorabilia in glitzy Mumbai.

Another way to get a real flavor for these diverse regions is through its fantastic cuisine. Relying on nuoc mam (fermented fish sauce), kalamansi juice, tamarind and chilli, Vietnamese food is a riot of hot, sweet, salty and sour. Slurp on bowlfuls of pho (pronounced ‘fuh’), flavorful beef or chicken broth packed with rice noodles and veggies, and devour banh mi sandwiches - which combine pork or tofu, pickled vegetables and a crusty French baguette. Singapore and Malaysia are also street food superstars. Don’t miss crispy duck noodles, dim sum, and kaya toast - grilled bread served with coconut jam, soft boiled-eggs and soy sauce in Singapore, and nasi lemak - coconut rice with pandan leaf and spicy sambals in Malaysia. Sri Lanka’s hoppers - thin rice flour and coconut milk pancakes - are legendary, as are India’s curries which range from daal (lentil) through to tomatoey butter chicken.

With laid-back beaches, patchworks of rice paddies and city hustle, there’s something to delight everyone here. Jump in to the waters of the Ba Ho Waterfall, or DIY spa, nature-style in Thap Ba’s hot springs and mud baths. Surround yourself with tropical plants at Gardens by the Bay, hawker stall-hop in Tiong Bahru, or shop at Orchard Road’s high-end boutiques in Singapore. Travel to the Kuala Lumpur suburbs and visit the Batu Caves, a series of impressive caves which house Hindu shrines. Chill out on Tangalle Beach, one of Sri Lanka’s prettiest stretches of sand, or head to the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary to spot glossy ibis and reef herons. In India, see sloth bears and panthers at Goa’s Bhangwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, or indulge in street food eats and urban beaches in Mumbai.

Step back in time at Ho Chi Minh’s War Remnants Museum for a sobering and moving reminder of the impact of war. Take in Singapore’s sparkling scenery, from the iconic Merlion Statue to the surreal triple-towers of the Moshe Safde-designed Marina Bay Sands. Find your own pace; whizz past Colombo Fort and bustling Pettah Market by tuk tuk in Sri Lanka, and pause for contemplation and feel your heart swell at the symmetrical beauty of the Taj Mahal in Agra. There’s plenty of opportunity to connect with nature too; leisurely through Palolem Beach’s turquoise waters, be dazzled by orchids in-bloom at the Singapore Botanical Garden, or make for Yala National Park - just an hour from Hambantota - home to the world’s largest population of leopards.

Great Barrier Reef

  • 1/3 — Great Barrier Reef
  • 2/3 — Great Wall of China
  • 3/3 — The Taj Mahal

Some of the world’s most jaw-dropping natural wonders can be found beneath the waves — like Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, located in the aptly named Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland. Stretching more than 1400 miles, this vibrant underwater ecosystem is the largest coral reef system on Earth and home to all kinds of diverse marine life. In a nutshell, it’s a dream come true for snorkelers and divers.

The Great Wall of China is one of the world’s oldest and most enduring man-made monuments, with some sections of this UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back 2,000 years. Construction began in the 3rd century B.C. and continued well into the 17th century A.D. — a testament to the lasting impact of ancient China. Today, its 13,000-mile-long path stretches along 23 degrees of longitude, with endless spots to soak up unforgettable views.

Renowned as one of the most iconic sights of India, the majestic Taj Mahal complex is a celebration of artistry, craftsmanship, love and symmetry. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was actually constructed as a mausoleum by the heartbroken emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb worthy of his great love Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631.

Insider tips Good to know in every situation

Crossing the road in bustling Vietnam, where tuk tuks screech and motorbikes fly by can be hair-raising stuff. Make like the locals, and when you cross, walk confidently and steadily, without stopping. Counterintuitive as it seems, driving here is an art, and traffic will miraculously weave around you as you stroll.

Pack light when you visit the Taj Mahal, as you’re only allowed to carry small bags with essentials such as a phone, camera and bottle of water into the monument. Make sure your gadgets are fully-charged ahead of time, as it’s a photo opportunity you won’t want to miss, and chargers (and other gear such as headphones and food) can’t be taken in and will need to be stowed in the storage lockers found at the entrance gates.

Weather can be changeable, and sudden, short sharp bursts of rainfall aren’t uncommon, particularly in SE Asia, so it’s worth keeping a lightweight waterproof coat with you when you explore.

Marella Cruises Cancels Middle East and Asia Itineraries

  • April 22, 2024

Marella Discovery 2

Marella Cruises informed its guests that the entire season of Middle East and Asia itineraries are now cancelled due to the conflict in the Red Sea.

“For the safety of our customers and crew, we can confirm that due to the ongoing conflict in the Red Sea area, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Asia and Middle East program between November 1, 2024 – April 30, 2025,” the company said in a statement.

“We appreciate how disappointing this news will be and therefore all impacted customers will be contacted by their booking agent to discuss the options available to them. Options include being able to rebook with a £200 per person reduction or receive a full refund.”

The British cruise line is currently rerouting the Marella Discovery 2, which has been based in Singapore during the winter season. The ship is currently sailing around Africa instead of via the Red Sea. This resulted in canceling Discovery’s repositioning cruise from Asia to Europe, as well as the winter 2024-25 program in Asia.

Marella Cruises is yet to announce where the ship will be based during the winter 2024-25 season.

Additionally, there’s a ropes course, a splash zone, a wider range of restaurants, a high-tech theater, and a glass-covered dome entertainment venue.

Suburbs 101 participates in affiliate programs including Amazon Associates Program and may earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

  • Launching June 2024

Cunard’s latest addition to its fleet is the Queen Anne, the company’s first new ship in over a decade. This 2794-passenger cruise liner will embark on its maiden voyage in Europe, with sailings in the Mediterranean and Scandinavia. The ship’s design is a modern take on the classic “golden age” of cruising, featuring new restaurants and a two-deck Royal Court theater. Check the prices for Cunard cruises .

Utopia of the Seas

  • Launching in July 2024

Royal Caribbean is introducing another massive cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas, which will soon become the second largest cruise ship worldwide, surpassed only by Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. Utopia of the Seas is an impressive ship, with a passenger capacity of 6,700, a total weight of 237,000 tons, and 2,830 cabins.

It is part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships featuring an impressive array of amenities, such as an indoor ice skating rink, a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator, a rock climbing wall, a water park, a 259 ft Ultimate Abyss waterslide, an aqua theater, and neighborhoods filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Cruise passengers will be entertained with Broadway-caliber shows.

Utopia of the Seas will sail on short getaway itineraries from Port Canaveral (Orland), offering 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday itineraries to the Bahamas and Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Check the prices for Royal Caribbean cruises .

Disney Treasure

  • Launching December 2024

Disney Treasure, the latest addition to the Disney Cruise Line, will launch in December this year, marking a significant milestone after a decade since the launch of the last Disney cruise ship. The ship has 1256 cabins and suites, each designed with a theme inspired by Disney movies like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas.

Passengers on the cruise are in for a treat, with exciting Broadway-style musicals and the Aqua Mouse, a thrilling Disney water ride. The themed restaurants on board are another highlight, featuring a Marvel-themed restaurant and a Mexican restaurant inspired by the movie Coco. And if that wasn’t enough, the ship also features a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar, resembling a classic ocean liner’s haunted drawing room, serving ghostly cocktails.

  • Launching August 2024

Silversea Cruises is preparing to launch its newest ship, the Silver Ray, in the summer of 2024. The Silver Ray is the second Nova Class ship in the Silversea fleet, and it promises to bring ultra-luxury cruising to a new level. With a capacity of 728 passengers, the Silver Ray is a small ship that offers an all-balcony cabin experience, complete with walk-in closets and butler service.

But that’s not all. The Silver Ray is also an eco-friendly cruise ship, making it the first hybrid, luxury cruise ship to be completely emission-free while in port. It does this by using fuel cells and batteries to power the ship.

The Silver Ray will begin its maiden voyage season sailing in the Mediterranean, before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, where it will offer South America cruise itineraries. Check the prices for Silversea cruises .

Brilliant Lady

  • Launching TBA 2024

Virgin Voyages, the popular adults-only cruise line, is launching its newest ship, the “Brilliant Lady,” sometime in 2024. The brand new ship will have a capacity of over 2700 passengers and will be an adults-only cruise—perfect for anyone seeking an indulgent cruising experience.

Explora II is the latest ship of Explora Journeys, MSC Group’s newest addition to its luxury brand. With a capacity of slightly over 900 passengers, it’s a smaller cruise ship that promises a more personalized experience for its guests.

Passengers on board the ship will be treated to a range of luxurious amenities that include oversized suites, welcome champagne bottles, an exclusive whiskey and cigar bar with rare whiskeys, an expansive spa, and plenty of bespoke experiences. The ship will sail in the Mediterranean, perfect for passengers looking for a luxurious and intimate cruising experience.

Mein Schiff 7

  • Launching Summer 2024

Mein Schiff 7 is the latest addition to TUI Cruises’ fleet and is expected to launch in the summer of 2024. TUI Cruises, a German-based cruise line co-owned by Royal Caribbean, has designed Mein Schiff 7 as a mid-size ship with a passenger capacity of 2896.

The brand new cruise ship has 12 restaurants and bistros, 17 bars and lounges, and cabins for solo travelers. The ship also features a reinvented casino concept that combines a lounge and casino. The ship will sail in the Baltic and British Isles.

The best new cruises in the world: 2024 Hot List

By CNT Editors

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Cruise Ship and Ship

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. The ship makes passengers feel, in a word, glamorous. Celebrity Ascent’s sumptuously designed interiors are flooded with natural light and evoke an air of playful sophistication that makes a week on board an escape worth cherishing. Passengers may find themselves longing to return for just one more succulent crab claw at Raw on 5, one more martini poured by bottle-spinning bartenders in the Martini Bar, or one more dazzling, acrobatic stage show, in the days following their farewells to this beautiful ship. From around £574 per person for a seven-night sailing. Scott Laird

Emerald Sakara, Emerald Cruises

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia, has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From around £3,112. David Dickstein

Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. From around £564 per person per night. Kerry Spencer

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Itineraries from around £420. Stefanie Waldek

A cruise ship in sea.

Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Breezy class all around. From around £791. Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025. From around £2,182. Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveller. From around £6,025. Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Cruise Line

Pursuit is a small, “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear – or damp Arctic expedition gear – in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. From around £8,729. Taylor Eisenhauer

Seven Seas Grandeur, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek islands , and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travellers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. All of the 372 suites, which start at a roomy 307 square feet, are decorated in calming neutral blues and beige, and feature furnished balconies; most have L'Occitane bubbles for the marble tub. Quiet comfort can also be had in the Serene Spa & Wellness outdoor lounge area, following a massage on a quartz crystal bed that mimics the feel of warm sand. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving speciality pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jewelled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From around £3798. Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova, Silversea Cruises

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool , the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate – as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture and place before even disembarking. From around £2465. Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton, Viking River Cruises

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio – designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration – just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt ’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travellers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real-time to shepherding travellers through modern night markets with endless fervour. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen – and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travellers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton, and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until that is, your next Aton sailing). From around £4849. Megan Spurrell

Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages

Stepping onto Resilient Lady feels a bit like heading to summer camp. The massive vessel is like a giant playground for adults, which is why it draws a fun-loving crowd. Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai . Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship – 20-plus to be exact – and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From around £1616 . Rachel Dube

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Nature Outdoors Ice Yacht Mountain Scenery Glacier and Ship

World Voyager, Atlas Ocean Voyages

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass. Back in your cosy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant – think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favourite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead. From around £1495. Celeste Moure
