Brits urgently warned about new travel rules coming into force this weekend

Brits urgently warned about new travel rules coming into force this weekend

European jet-setters are advised to take note of the legislation change ahead of their flights.

All holidaymakers travelling from the UK and European airports are set to be impacted by a brand new set of regulations coming into effect from Sunday.

Starting from September 1, plane passengers jetting off from airports such as Manchester, Amsterdam and Munich will face tougher restrictions on their hand luggage.

The call comes after the European Union announced plans to regulate and create uniformity where plane travel is concerned.

You may or may not be aware but up until now, individual airlines have been allowed to dictate the weight and size of cabin bags .

But from Sunday, that practice will be a thing of the past as a new standardisation on the weight and dimension of cabin bags is being ushered in.

Furthermore, the EU has announced a change to liquid limits and it’s worth checking out what does and doesn’t constitute.

What is the new hand luggage legislation?

New EU rules governing cabin baggage state you may bring one cabin bag, weighing no more than 10kg, onto a plane.

The maximum dimensions (inclusive of handles and wheels) are 55 x 40 x 20cm.

You are also permitted to bring a small personal item on board, including handbags, backpacks and laptop cases.

These must be no larger than 40 x 30 x 15cm.

Why are airport liquid limit rules changing?

If you’ve travelled on a flight anywhere over the last two decades, then you’ll be aware that a strict 100ml liquid legislation has been in play.

This is because, in 2006, authorities foiled a transatlantic aircraft terror plot where liquid explosives were disguised as soft drinks.

Since then, plane passengers have not been allowed to carry items higher than 100ml in their hand luggage.

However, some airports across Europe recently scrapped the rule due to the installation of Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) in some terminals.

These 3D scanners, initially approved by the Aviation Society, allowed passengers to carry a higher volume of liquids than previously outlined.

In June 2024, UK airports reverted to the 100ml rule and now all airports across Europe are doing the same.

What are the new airport security liquid limitations?

As of September 1, passengers are prohibited from carrying items containing more than 100ml of liquid in their cabin bags.

These items cannot total more than one litre when combined and must be placed inside a clear, resealable bag roughly measuring 20 x 20cm.

How long will the new legislation be enforced?

The EU’s new rules will be enforced from Sunday, September 1 and are expected to remain in play until otherwise stated.

It is also presumed they will be in play until otherwise stated.

The union claims this standardisation is ‘necessary’, but that rules could eventually be changed in the future.

Storm Lilian causes power cuts and travel delays

Thousands of homes across the North West have been left without power and travel has been disrupted by Storm Lilian.

Properties across Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Cheshire are currently affected by power cuts, Electricity North West has reported.

About 1000 homes are without power in Lancashire, with hundreds affected in Greater Manchester and in Cheshire.

The storm has also caused major disruption on the roads and public transport networks, with a number of lines suspended on the Manchester Metrolink.

The Bee Network has warned of disruption due to the severe weather conditions, reporting that a number of trees have fallen across the Manchester area, including at Piccadilly.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said: “Strong winds from Storm Lillian are causing disruption on the transport network this morning.

“A number of trees have been brought down by the storm across the Metrolink network leading to a number of lines being suspended and we are working to get all lines re-open as soon as possible."

TfGM urged anyone planning to travel on Friday to check before setting off.

“There is also disruption on the roads, which is impacting some Bee Network bus services, and disruption to rail services," the TfGM spokesperson added.

The only Metrolink Services said to be currently running are Rochdale town centre to Victoria Station, Manchester Airport to Sale Water Park, Trafford Centre to Deansgate Castlefield, Eccles to Cornbrook, Piccadilly to Old Trafford and Velopark to MediaCityUK.

UK hotel accused of reselling rooms at triple the price for Oasis gigs

By Stuff.co.nz | 2 days ago

A UK hotel chain is being accused of cashing in on the Oasis reunion by cancelling existing bookings and reselling the rooms for triple the price .

Lily Stroud said she "took a risk " by reserving rooms at Manchester's Maldron Hotel for next July after speculation about the band's return, the BBC reported .

But they were cancelled shortly after the band's announcement on Tuesday night.

And she wasn't the only one.

David O'Gorman told the BBC he'd booked a room for about £90 ($175) for July 20, 2025, hoping it would be a night Oasis was playing.

But hours later he got an email from the hotel saying there was a technical error and his booking didn't exist.

"The minute I saw that email from the hotel, I opened up Booking.com and the exact same room I booked is now around £350 ($680), so there's no technical error there," he told the BBC

Sacha Lord, night-time economy adviser for Greater Manchester, wrote on X on Tuesday that he had been contacted by "several people" who were told their reservations had been cancelled by Maldron Hotels after a "computer error".

Maldron Hotels said some rooms had been cancelled, but the mistake was down to a computer glitch, the Telegraph reported .

Thrillseekers can get a special view of the Northern Lights with new travel deal

Viewing the world's most dazzling natural light show from the air is easier than ever thanks to a new deal

  • 11:27, 30 AUG 2024

The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, above Arthurs Seat and Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh

Catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights is top of many people's bucket lists. While parts of the UK have had unprecedented views of the dazzling natural wonder this year, many of us have missed out on seeing it in all its glory, whether from light pollution or sleeping through the night and waking to social media chat and photos of the unusual phenomena lighting up local skies.

The magnetic light show is caused when electrically-charged particles from the sun cross into the Earth’s atmosphere. It can be viewed from the UK, depending on light pollution and cloud cover. While the best views of Aurora Borealis involve travelling to the Nordic countries - and all the associated cold weather gear, hotels and other costs that come with that kind of trip - nature lovers don't have to spend thousands travelling abroad to experience the magic.

Passengers are being given a rare opportunity to get an up-close view of the Northern Lights, in a series of special night flights taking off from airports across the UK throughout this winter and early 2025.

Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, shine over Gulfoss waterfall in Iceland

A series of special three to three-and-a-half-hour round trips are scheduled from regional airports including Manchester , Gatwick and Birmingham in November 2024 and March 2025. Prices are £249 per person based on two travelling via Virgin Experiences , although if you want to travel as a single traveller it's also available via Omega Breaks at the same price.

The flights are headed by expert astronomer and BBC Sky at Night regular Pete Lawrence, who will give a full commentary of what passengers are seeing from the window for anyone unsure on the difference between the Milky Way and Orion's Belt.

The organisers of the trip explain: "Our flight excursions are perhaps the easiest and most affordable way to see this natural phenomenon. The Aurora’s appearance can vary from a weak glow to a breathtaking, sky-filling display, and even though the best views may be had from ground level, visibility can be hampered by surrounding light pollution, bad weather or an inconveniently cloudy night. Our flight excursions endeavour to eliminate these factors, aiming to improve chances of viewing this spectacle."

To get the best view of the lights, the aeroplane cabin is made as dark as possible after take-off so that passengers' eyes can adapt ready to get the best view. Meanwhile, people swap seats at intervals to make sure everyone gets a good view while the experts point out shooting stars and constellations. Refreshments are served on the journey back to the airport, once the lights have been switched back on.

The Northern Lights flights have been running for 25 years with thousands of amateur astronomers taking a chance to make the most of the amazing views. Travel operator Omega Breaks is rated Great on Trustpilot , with an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 381 reviews across all their excursions, including the Northern Lights flights.

One happy customer described the experience as 'phenomenal,' adding: "A fantastic flight, all well organised even down to the black tape to blackout lights in the plane. We saw great show of the northern lights, cosmic dust and all the star constellations. Great."

Of course viewing a natural phenomenon can't always be guaranteed, and most of the negative reviews were by people disappointed at seeing the light show. One said: "Disappointing, as we did not get to see the lights, just a grey outline, nature is full of surprises!"

Meanwhile a second added: "All went well with the flight, the expert did his excellent best, but sadly the Aurora wasn't performing well. No spectacular displays just an arch shaped whitish glow above the horizon."

However reviewers who didn't get to see much praised the trip for the skills of the astronomer and views of the stars. One added: "We had an interesting talk about what we might expect to see and then a comfortable flight. We saw the constellations and the milky way, all explained to us by an expert. Unfortunately, no Aurora Borealis on this trip but the stars were great compensation."

Shoppers who book the experience through Virgin can get a gift wrapped presentation box making it perfect for Christmas or birthdays.

Adventurers happier to spend more on the experience can do Northern Lights trips via Tui this winter with the holiday firm currently discounting two and three night breaks to Norways, Iceland and elsewhere and prices starting from £450 per person for a three night trip based on two people sharing.

Transfer news LIVE: Raheem Sterling linked with Manchester United as Chelsea target Jadon Sancho swap

LIVE – Updated at 00:00

The transfer window has entered its final week as Premier League clubs scramble to complete last-minute business before Friday’s deadline.

The market closes on Friday night, and plenty of big stars are looking at uncertain futures with just days to go. That includes Raheem Sterling who, cast aside by Chelsea , has now been linked with a move to Manchester United in a swap deal for winger Jadon Sancho , according to the Telegraph .

Rather predictably, it’s set to be a busy end to the window at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea set to rekindle their interest in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen . The player’s agent has given the Blues a fresh boost, with Romelu Lukaku ready to depart the other way and Napoli even lining up a move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay .

That could clear the way for Erik ten Hag’s side to complete a move for PSG’s Manuel Ugarte , while Liverpool are also set to complete their first signing under Arne Slot. A deal has been agreed for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili , although the Georgia international and star of Euro 2024 is set to return to Valencia on loan for the season.

Transfer news: Chelsea interested in Sancho-Sterling swap

Raheem Sterling looks set to leave Chelsea. Jadon Sancho seemingly does not fit into Erik ten Hag’s plans at Manchester United. So could a swap deal between the clubs benefit both with just days to go before the transfer deadline?

According to the Telegraph’s Jason Burt, Chelsea are interested in exploring the option. Sancho has been linked with Juventus after he was left out of United’s squad for the second weekend in a row against Brighton on Saturday, although the 24-year-old did travel.

Sancho would fit Chelsea’s profile, but his wages at could be an issue. Sterling, however, is one of the highest earners at Stamford Bridge and Enzo Maresca has made it clear that the winger does not fit into his plans. Could Sterling find a home at Old Trafford?

Sven-Goran Eriksson ‘a true gentleman of the game’ as Prince William leads tributes

Sven-Goran Eriksson  has been hailed as a “true gentleman of the game” as the  Prince of Wales  led tributes to the former  England  manager,  who has died at the age of 76 .

Eriksson, who had been  diagnosed with pancreatic cancer  last year, managed England from 2001 to 2006 and the Swede was the first foreign manager of the English national side.

His death on Monday morning  was confirmed by his family  after Eriksson revealed in January that he had “at best a year left to live”.

In a tribute posted on Twitter/X,  Prince William , who is a patron of the Football Association, said: “Sad to hear about the passing of Sven-Goran Eriksson.

“I met him several times as England manager and was always struck by his charisma and passion for the game. My thoughts are with his family and friends. A true gentleman of the game. W.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson: The failed alchemist of England’s ‘Golden Generation’ with a career of two halves

Sven-Goran Eriksson ’s unassuming nature could camouflage the extraordinary nature of his footballing life. He went from being a 27-year-old assistant manager in the Swedish third division to  England ’s first foreign manager and one of the  most successful coaches of his generation .

In England , he will be mostly remembered for the ultimately underwhelming end to tournaments , the supposedly Golden Generation stumbling in  three consecutive quarter-finals , and the sense of what might have been – though his successors, Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello, fared worse with the same players – but his feats before then give him a strong case to be Sweden’s greatest manager. He was one of the finest anywhere in the two decades before receiving a call from his agent, Athole Still, who he assumed was joking when he asked if Eriksson was interested in the England post.

Sven-Goran Eriksson: More than just England’s Golden Generation’s failed alchemist

Sven-Goran Eriksson, manager of England’s golden generation, dies aged 76

Sven-Goran Eriksson , the manager in charge of England’s “golden generation” during the early 2000s, has died aged 76.

Eriksson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year after suffering a stroke while out running near his home in Sweden. He told a Swedish radio station in January that he had  “at best a year left to live” .

Eriksson  bade a final farewell to the public  in a recent documentary. “I had a good life,” he said. “I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do.”

His death was confirmed by his family on Monday. “Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away,” a statement read. “After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family.”

6 players expected to move on before the summer transfer window shuts

As the clock ticks down on the 2024 summer transfer window, several big names could yet be on the move.

The window shuts on Friday, August 30 at 11pm BST.

Below, the PA news agency takes a look at some players expected to be starting over at a new club.

Major deals still to be done?

Here’s a quick recap of the major deals that could still be done across Europe before the respective deadlines.

In the Premier League, Arsenal still need to get their deal for Mikel Merino over the line, while the headline-making deal could be Chelsea’s proposed move for Victor Osimhen , though there hasn’t been much movement on that deal yet.

Manchester United look poised to agree a much-publicised deal for Manuel Ugarte , while Liverpool will announce the move for Giorgi Mamardashvili soon enough.

Newcastle’s deal for Marc Guehi could be a defining move of the summer, though the clubs remain apart in their valuations.

The futures of both Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho are also worth keeping an eye on, with their respective clubs potentially entertaining talks over a swap deal.

Abroad, there are fewer moves that really catch the eye, with Barcelona struggling financially, Real Madrid and Bayern having done their business, both Milan sides looking quiet and Napoli still to secure moves for Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku .

Nevertheless, Milan Skriniar could be leaving PSG, with the French club looking to sign Ademola Lookman .

Brighton complete signing of ‘special’ Matt O’Riley from Celtic for £25m

Matt O’Riley has joined  Brighton  from  Celtic  on a five-year contract.

The 23-year-old  Denmark  midfielder joins Albion for a reported £25million, subject to international clearance.

O’Riley featured more than 100 times for the Hoops over two-and-a-half years, scoring 27 goals and helping Celtic win the  Scottish Premiership on three occasions.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said: “He plays a very specialist position. He is very good at occupying and attacking the right space and likes making deep runs, knowing when to attack at the right time”.

What have been the most expensive Premier League deals of the window so far?

Premier League clubs have spent around £1.5bn so far this window – but which signings have been the most expensive?

Dominic Solanke is the single most expensive most in the Premier League, with a total value of around £65m.

In terms of sales, Julian Alvarez’s move from City to Atletico is the most expensive move of the entire window around the world, with sales of Joao Palhinha and Michael Olise (both to Bayern Munich) reaching £47m and £50m respectively.

Plenty of the most expensive deals this summer have been done between two Premier League clubs, including moves for Amadou Onana, Pedro Neto and Ian Maatsen.

Premier League’s biggest transfers so far:

Dominic Solanke – Bournemouth to Spurs – £65m

Leny Yoro – Lille to Manchester United – £59m

Pedro Neto – Wolves to Chelsea – £54m

Amadou Onana – Everton to Aston Villa – £50m

Joao Felix – Atletico Madrid to Chelsea – £46m

Matthijs de Ligt – Bayern Munich to Manchester United – £42m

Georginio Rutter – Leeds to Brighton – £40m

Max Kilman – Wolves to West Ham – £40m

Ricardo Calafiori – Bologna to Arsenal – £38m

Ian Maatsen – Chelsea to Aston Villa – £37.5m

Saudi Arabia plotting big moves

News has broken this evening that Saudi Arabian clubs are attempting to make surprising moves in the summer window, with Al Ahli “progressing in talks with Manchester City for Joao Cancelo” according to Sky Sports .

The Saudi club are “hoping to pay just over £21m” for the Portuguese full-back, who is surplus to requirements at City.

More recently, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Al Nassr – the side made famous by Cristiano Ronaldo – “have sent official bid to Paris Saint-Germain for Milan Skriniar”, with the “deal almost done” for the Slovenian centre-back.

“Despite proposals from Italy, Skriniar is now close to joining Al Nassr,” said the Italian.

Ilkay Gundogan feels like he’s ‘never been away’ after Man City homecoming

Ilkay Gundogan  enjoyed his Manchester City homecoming and says it feels like he has never been away.

Last summer the 33-year-old brought the curtain down on seven medal-laden years at the  Etihad Stadium , joining  Barcelona  on a free transfer after captaining the side to the treble.

Gundogan left as a club great and was received as such as the midfielder made his second debut as a substitute in Saturday’s 4-1 win comeback win against promoted  Ipswich .

How Ilkay Gundogan came to reunite with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City – and what might come next

Ilkay Gundogan  was the creator who became captain. Now he is the confidant who could become a coach.  Pep Guardiola  rarely re-signs players but he broke a personal rule to be reunited with the German. They are the neighbours who may be found side by side in a dugout in the future.

Gundogan was Guardiola’s first signing for  Manchester City ; should the manager leave when his contract expires next summer, he may prove his last, as well. But even then, their alliance could be renewed. They were separated for a year when Gundogan joined Barcelona. Perhaps it gave Guardiola a mole in the Catalan camp. Certainly each had a sounding board. And it meant that, when Gundogan mooted the idea of  the summer’s most sensational comeback , he was confident of the answer.

“We were in touch throughout last year,” Gundogan said. “We had more than a couple of phone calls. I went to his childhood club and he’s still a big fan of FC Barcelona, he doesn’t make a secret out of it because he’s from there and it’s the club he loves.

“And when I put it out there, the idea, he loved it, and he said, ‘let’s try to do it’. From there, everything happened very quickly.”

Liverpool to complete first transfer under Arne Slot as £30m fee agreed for Euro 2024 star

Liverpool  are set to make goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili the first signing of the  Arne Slot  era after agreeing a fee of €35m (£30m) for the Georgia international.

Mamardashvili is poised to undergo a medical as he completes his move from  Valencia , where the 23-year-old will return on loan for the remainder of the season.

It will leave  Alisson  as Slot’s first-choice goalkeeper for this season after the Brazilian, whose contract expires in 2026,  rejected the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia .

Mamardashvili  starred for Georgia at Euro 2024  as his nation reached the knockout stages and a deal has been reached now with the future in mind, although Alisson is also open to extending his stay.

Victor Osimhen’s agent hands Chelsea transfer boost with statement on future

The agent of  Victor Osimhen  has said the striker’s future is “in Europe” amid reports that the  Napoli  forward will reject a move to Saudi Arabia.

The Nigeria international  is set to depart Napoli this summer  and reports in Italy suggest the club have received an offer of around £60m from Saudi side Al Ahli.

Osimhen has also been linked with  Chelsea  and  Arsenal , with Napoli closing in on moves for Blues striker  Romelu Lukaku  and  Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay . Such deals would require Napoli receiving a fee for Osimhen.

But the 25-year-old’s agent, Roberto Calenda, took to Twitter/X to provide an update on his client’s future, which he insisted will not be in Saudi Arabia despite any offer sent to Napoli.

Arsenal academy graduate Charlie Patino has signed for Spanish second division outfit Deportivo.

Patino progressed through the Gunners’ youth-team after he joined the club in 2015 at the age of 11, but would only go on to play two times for the Premier League side.

After productive loan spells at Blackpool and Swansea, Patino, 20, has joined Deportivo on a permanent deal and signed a four-year contract with the Segunda Division club.

Man Utd latest

Sky Sports are reporting that Manchester United and Burnley have agreed a permanent deal for midfielder Hannibal Mejbri.

Hannibal will have a medical today ahead of the deal being completed, but it is not yet known what the fee for the Tunisian will be. It had initially been thought that a loan with a buy option was the more likely outcome for a deal.

Fabrizio Romano adds that United “requested change as funds will be received earlier”, while the deal “will also include a sell-on clause”.

In other news, United have reportedly decided against trying to include Ben Chilwell in any potential deal for Jadon Sancho,

Manchester United youngster completes move

Burnley have agreed a deal with Manchester United to sign Hannibal Mejbri.

Sky Sports are reporting that Mejbri will have a medical today after he had gone into the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.

Premier League round-up

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner told the media that Sam Johnstone and Naouirou Ahamada both want to leave the club, with Glasner saying “maybe this is what will happen or not” in relation to moves for both players.

At Brentford, the Evening Standard reports that they are yet to receive offers for Frank Onyeka, despite interest in the midfielder from “clubs in Spain, France and England”. The London club are closing in on a deal for Gustavo Nunez, and are interested in Fiorentina right-back Michael Kayode.

Chelsea ‘keeper Kepa is closing in on a loan deal to Bournemouth, while Crystal Palace remain in talks with Arsenal over Eddie Nketiah.

West Ham seem to be concentrating on sales, with James Ward-Prowse and Nayef Aguerd looking like others who could leave the club after a deal was agreed to sell Kurt Zouma.

Wolves are interested in signing Luca Koleosho  from Burnley as they look to replace Pedro Neto, while they are also targeting Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and the aforementioned Sam Johnstone.

Brighton will continue to make ground in their deal for Ferdi Kadioglu, while Newcastle United are not giving up hope of landing Marc Guehi.

Forest continue with their pursuit of Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, though they have been linked to midfielders including Fulham’s Andreas Pereira and goalkeepers including both Ramsdale and Johnstone.

Fulham appear to have pulled out of a potential deal for Lyon’s Rayan Cherki, and their incoming business may be done for the summer.

As mentioned, Premier League clubs have spent around £1.5bn so far this window – but which signings have been the most expensive?

Which Premier League clubs have been the most active this summer?

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea have been the summer’s biggest spenders so far , with a total outlay of £204m as we enter the final week of the window. They have sold pretty well too though, having sold Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchinson for fees totalling around €143m (£121m).

Perhaps surprisingly, Aston Villa and Brighton are the next two biggest spenders, with Villa having spent £149m (including deals for Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen) and Brighton paying a total of £144m in fees so far (not including the arrivals of Matt O’Riley and Ferdi Kadioglu).

Southampton have made the most signings, with 13, while Liverpool have made the least – though the signature of Giorgi Mamardashvili is imminent, even if he will return to Valencia on loan.

Man City are one of the surprise packages of the summer, having only spent £30m so far – that amount is the total value of their deal for Savinho, with add-ons included. City have welcomed back Ilkay Gundogan on a free, and sold Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for around £80m.

Manchester United have spent £140m on signings, including almost £60m on Leny Yoro and almost £40 on Matthijs de Ligt – they are also expected to add PSG’S Manuel Ugarte at a potential fee of around £50m.

Premier League spending down as window enters its final week

As the transfer window enters its final week, the BBC reports that Premier League spending is down a mammoth £800m on last year’s levels.

Referencing data from Football Transfers, BBC Sport says that clubs spent £2.3bn last summer, but have forked out ‘just’ £1.5bn so far this summer.

Nevertheless, this amount remains far above the amounts spent in Europe’s other main leagues, with Serie A spending the second largest amount at £617m.

Ligue 1 clubs have spent £528m, with La Liga having spent almost £438m and the Bundesliga spending £462m so far.

In terms of the number of deals done, there have been 105 deals in both the Premier League and La Liga, with 135 done in the Bundesliga, 115 done in Serie A and just 78 done in Ligue 1.

Brighton complete move for Matt O’Riley

Brighton have announced that they have completed a £25m move for Celtic’s Matt O’Riley.

The 23-year-old Denmark midfielder was named as Celtic’s player of the year last season, and he joins on a five-year contract.

In other news, Brighton are close to finalising a move for Fenerbahce left-back Ferdi Kadioglu, while Billy Gilmour could be on his way to Napoli after the Seagulls agreed a move with Napoli.

Sterling “prioritising Chelsea contract situation before any transfer talks"

The Athletic reports that it is Raheem Sterling’s intention to “resolve his contractual situation” with Chelsea before discussing a move away with other clubs.

Sterling has three years left on his contract, with a weekly wage of more than £300,000, though he has been told he is not part of Enzo Maresca’s plans for the future.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United among others, but he wants “further dialogue with Chelsea in the coming days, prior to potentially choosing a new club,” says David Ornstein.

A less-covered move here, with Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko on his way to French side OGC Nice.

Moukoko was seen as a prodigious talent when he joined Dortmund in 2016, eventually scoring 137 goals in just 81 games for the German club’s youth sides (according to Transfermarkt).

But he hasn’t performed as was hoped in the senior team, scoring just 17 goals in 76 appearances in the Bundesliga.

The 19-year-old joins Nice on a loan deal with an option to buy, with the purchase amount set “ higher than €12m reported” according to Fabrizio Romano.

James Rodriguez has completed a move to Madrid-based side Rayo Vallecano.

The Colombian, winner of the 2014 World Cup golden boot and this year’s ‘best player’ award at the Copa America, was a free agent after terminating his contract with Sao Paulo.

He joins the La Liga side on a one-year contract, with an option for an additional year.

Cancelo to decide next career move

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Man City have reached an agreement with Al Hilal over the transfer of Joao Cancelo for a fee of €25m.

The deal is “verbally done”, with Cancelo to “decide soon”on whether to move to Saudi Arabia. He is being offered a wage package of around €15m per season.

If Cancelo were to move, he would be joining Neymar, Mitrovic, Ruben Neves and Sergei Milinković-Savic at Al Hilal.

Chelsea latest

The Chelsea rumour mill shows no sign of slowing down, with the exit of Raheem Sterling currently looking most likely, alongside that of Romelu Lukaku. Ben Chilwell is another who has been linked with a move, but a lack of suitors is proving difficult, while Armando Borja’sloan move to Ipswich is in danger of breaking down.

A move for Victor Osimhen may be stalled by his rumoured wage demands of £500,000 per week, but with other reports suggesting that the Nigerian is keen on a move to London or PSG, those numbers may be wide of the mark. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is reportedly an alternative target.

The club reportedly are interested in Jadon Sancho too, and are hoping United would be interested in a swap deal for the England international.

After the sad news of the passing of Sven-Goran Eriksson today, below is Richard Jolly’s obituary of the former England manager.

Another Romano report, this one linked to Man United and Burnley.

Burnley have reached a verbal agreement with United over the signing of midfielder Hannibal Mejbri. The medical is booked for today, and a total agreement on a loan with obligation to buy is “almost there” according to the Italian.

Zouma to leave West Ham

We mentioned Zouma’s proposed move to Saudi Arabia earlier, and it seems he’s already been snatched up.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the Frenchman has agreed a deal with Al Orobah for a loan with mandatory buy clause (the amount of which is currently unknown).

Nottingham Forest turn to Santi Gimenez

Following the news that Eddie Nketiah’s move to Forest had broken down, Fabrizio Romano reported that Forest are now focusing more on Santiago Gimenez of Feyenoord as their striker signing. Forest’s latest proposal was for a fee of €33m with add-ons, making it a club record sale for Feyenoord.

Romano added that Gimenez is “open to the move”, but it is “now up to the clubs again” to iron out the terms of a deal.

More recently, Ben Jacobs reports that “Forest are close to a £30m agreement with Feyenoord” for the Mexican striker.

Eddie Nketiah latest

Some news breaking on the future of Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, who’s already seen a move to Nottingham Forest collapse this window.

David Ornstein of The Athletic is reporting that Arsenal are “expected to accept offer from Crystal Palace” to sign the striker, with the deal expected to be worth £25m plus £5m in add-ons.

Ornstein adds that there is “no issue anticipated on personal terms for [the] 25-year-old striker”.

Newcastle latest

On X, Ben Jacobs reports that Newcastle have re-opened discussions over a loan move for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. Burnley have previously rejected a bid of £15m.

The Magpies continue in the hunt to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, though they remain £5m short of Palace’s valuation having had a bid of £60m plus £5m in add-ons rejected.

Newcastle have several back-up targets in case a move for Guehi doesn’t materialise, with Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Chelsea’s Axel Disasi among them.

Adrien Rabiot, Raheem Sterling and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have also all been touted as potential targets for Eddie Howe and co.

In terms of players leaving, Miguel Almiron and Kieran Tripper look like they could leave, though there is nothing concrete at this point.

Arsenal latest

With Mikel Merino on the verge of joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad, is there any other business on the cards for the Gunners?

There could certainly be some players leaving the club, with Aaron Ramsdale likely to join Wolves before the end of the window. Eddie Nketiah is being targeted by Crystal Palace after his move to Nottingham Forest broke down, while Cedric has been the subject of interest from Brazilian sides and Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord.

Jakub Kiwior is another who’s been linked with a move away, with West Ham and AC Milan reportedly holding an interest, while Charlie Patino is on the verge of a move to Deportivo La Coruna.

In terms of signings, Fabrizio Romano has said that the “intention of Arsenal remains to add one more offensive player”, and though it may not be Nico Williams, it is worth keeping an eye on the Gunners – they’ve been linked with Victor Osimhen and Sporting’s Viktor Gyökeres.

If Ramsdale does go, they will likely sign a ‘keeper too – they’ve been heavily linked with Espanyol’s Joan Garcia.

Man United latest

Sky Sports report that Burnley are still pursuing a deal for United’s Tunisian midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, with talks ongoing regarding the structure of the deal.

Meanwhile, Juventus have made it clear to United that they are only willing to take Jadon Sancho on loan this summer, with United preferring a permanent sale or a loan with obligation to buy at the very least.

United have agreed a fee with Napioli for Scott McTominay, who is thought to open to a move to Italy, having not favoured Fulham previously.

The Manchester Evening News reports that United’s “provisional intention” is to make one signing this week, and that is obviously Manuel Ugarte of PSG. The Uruguayan continues to move closer to a move to Manchester, and that could be accelerated by the sale of McTominay. That may turn into a permanent sale, rather than a loan with obligation, if United can indeed offload McTominay.

West Ham latest

Plenty still going on at West Ham ahead of the window closing on Friday.

The London club are still chasing PSG midfielder Carlos Soler, with talks ongoing between the clubs, and reports are also linking them with former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, who is currently at Roma.

Several players could leave the Hammers too, with James War-Prowse, Maxwel Cornet and Nayef Aguerd all up for sale. Defender Kurt Zouma has seen a move to UAE club Shabab Al-Ahly fall through, though there is interest from Saudi in the Frenchman, report Sky .

Osimhen appears to reject Saudi Arabia

A mix of news to report regarding Victor Osimhen and his proposed move to Al Ahli.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Osimhen is not accepting proposals from the Saudi club, as he is asking for “an important wage” and the requirement of an included release clause. “The release clause is crucial or deal will not happen at all,” added Romano.

In an earlier post on X, Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, said that Osimhen “is not a package to be shipped far away to make room for new prophets.

“Victor was elected African footballer of the year, eighth at the Ballon d’Or, [and] he still has so much to do in Europe.

“There is need [for] respect and balance.”

Ibrahima Konate keen to prove his worth at Liverpool this season

Ibrahima Konate  is eager to prove why he should partner  Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence after helping  Liverpool  to a 2-0 win over  Brentford .

Left out of the starting XI in the season-opener at Ipswich, Konate was introduced at half-time after  Jarell Quansah  was controversially substituted and the Reds found an extra gear to overcome the Tractor Boys.

Konate was preferred to Quansah against the Bees on Sunday and made several telling interventions, and he also started the lightning breakaway that led to Luis Diaz opening the scoring after 13 minutes.

Italy round-up

Juventus continue their busy summer with the loan signing of Fiorentina winger Nico Gonzalez, who has joined for an €8m loan fee and a buy option of €33m – they have also agreed a deal to loan FC Porto’s Francesco Conceicao.

In midfield, they are also looking to finalise the purchase of Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners for around €50m.

The Bianconeri are also in the chase for loan signing of United winger Jadon Sancho and are looking to fund that move with the sale of Italy winger Federico Chiesa to Barcelona for around €12m.

Napoli have agreed a fee for United’s Scott McTominay, though their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku has stalled due to agreements over image rights. The Partenopei are looking to offload Victor Osimhen, with Saudi club Al-Ahli having made a proposal worth £59m, though the Nigerian looks to be more keen on a move to either PSG or Chelsea.

Argentina defender Tomas Palacios has arrived ahead of a move to Inter, but it is quiet in terms of other signings for both Inter and AC Milan.

Atalanta are hoping to replace the outgoing Juan Musso with Rui Patricio in goal, while the sale of Ademola Lookman to PSG appears to be edging closer.

Newly promoted Como are looking to build quite the side as well, with Man City’s Maximo Perrone the latest loan addition to add to free transfers for Sergi Roberto, Raphael Varane and Pepe Reina, as well as the €6m signing of Real Madrid’s Nico Paz.

The window shuts on Friday, 30 August at 11pm BST.

Mamardashvili on verge of completing move to Liverpool

Fabrizio Romano has announced that Liverpool are on the brink of their first signing of the summer window.

Giorgi Mamardashvili will have his medical today ahead of joining from Valencia, where he will return on loan after he signs.

“The agreement for €35m package plus sell-on clause will be signed now but he will join Liverpool in July 2025,” says Romano.

Erik ten Hag gives Jadon Sancho transfer update as Manchester United exit looms

Erik ten Hag  insists  Jadon Sancho  must fight for his place after the  Manchester United  winger travelled with the squad to face Brighton despite speculation linking him with a move away.

Sancho has been out of favour at Old Trafford, returning from a loan move to Borussia Dortmund last season. The 24-year-old winger, who has been  linked to Paris Saint-Germain  and Juventus, travelled with the squad to face the Seagulls on Saturday amid a shortage of options.

Ten Hag ultimately chose not to include Sancho on the bench but did urge the player to compete for his place.

Arsenal to make late move for forward?

Mikel Arteta has hinted at a potential addition to Arsenal’s forwards after an injury to Gabriel Jesus and the potential departure of Eddie Nketiah.

“We are really happy with the squad,” Arteta said to Sky Sports . “It’s true we had an injury with Gabriel Jesus and we missed him. We are a little bit short and if we can do something then we will do it.

“Unfortunately on Thursday in the training session just at the end he [Jesus] felt something in his groin. We need to assess him, we need an MRI scan to see. He was not available for the game. We have to see, probably [Sunday] or Monday we will have the results. If it is a matter of days or weeks, we don’t know.”

Spain round-up

There’s a potentially great deal in the works for Real Vallecano, with the Madrid-based club close to agreeing a move for Colombia international James Rodriguez – the 33-year-old is a free agent after leaving Sao Paulo this summer.

The outgoings continue at Barcelona too, with Clement Lenglet joining Atletico Madrid on loan – though there’s no option for a permanent transfer. Vitor Roque is also close to finalising his loan move to Real Betis.

Barca are supposedly optimistic about agreeing a deal with Juventus for Italian winger Federico Chiesa, though they are working on outgoings in a bid to register new signing Dani Olmo.

Incomings continue to look very unlikely for Real Madrid, and while outgoings are possible, it is highly unlikelythat Rodrygo will be one of them, despite recent rumours. The one rumour that refuses to go away though (especially in Spain) is that Los Blancos are considering a move for Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies.

Atletico Madrid will soon be adding to the signings of Lenglet and Alvarez as goalkeeper Juan Musso joins on a loan with obligation to buy from Atalanta, while they are in the process of finalising the loan of Arthur Vermeeren to RB Leipzig.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that former Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels is close to joining Real Sociedad after becoming a free agent in the summer,

Chelsea’s Noni Madueke apologises for insulting Wolverhampton after scoring hat-trick against them

Chelsea’ s hat-trick hero  Noni Madueke  has apologised for insulting the city of  Wolverhampton  on social media before his match-winning display at Molineux.

The England Under-21 winger scored three times in 15 second-half minutes in  Chelsea’s 6-2 win against Wolves .

He was heavily booed throughout by the home fans due to a hastily-deleted Instagram post in the early hours that contained an expletive to describe the midlands city he was staying in.

Chelsea or Saudi for Osimhen?

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen has long been a rumoured target for Chelsea, who have agreed a deal to sell Romelu Lukaku to the Italian club.

And it has been expected that, following the completion of that deal, Chelsea would swoop for the Nigerian striker.

However, Sky Sports reports that “interest remains from an Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli for Victor Osimhen, who are pushing hard to sign the Napoli striker”.

In addition, “it is likely that a club-to-club agreement can be reached on more satisfactory terms than Chelsea and PSG”.

Nevertheless, the report adds that for Al Ahli, “it might be more difficult to reach an agreement with Osimhen” himself.

“Interested clubs are thought to holding on until the final few days as they sense Napoli may get desperate to sell,” adds Sky .

Nunes set to leave City?

The Mirror are also reporting that Pep Guardiola is ready to give the green light to the departure of midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Portuguese made just 17 appearances in his debut season since a £53m move, and Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle are all reportedly interested in the former Wolves man.

With the return of Ilkay Gundogan, the Portugal man has fallen “even further down the pecking order” at City.

Chelsea interested in a Sancho-Sterling swap deal

This would be one of the stories of the window if this came true.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Chelsea are interested in a swap deal with Manchester United for Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling.

Several outlets have reported that Chelsea are considering the move for the out-of-favour United winger, and they are also supposedly hoping that United might be interested in their own out-of-favour winger, Raheem Sterling.

The Telegraph adds that Juventus are the other club interested in Sancho, and “at present, the Serie A club looks a more likely destination”.

United would reportedly want around £40m for the England international, “ but a loan with an obligation to buy appears to be the most likely offer at this stage”.

Any deal is further complicated by his wage demands, as “ it is unlikely that any club would want to cover Sancho’s wages in full, which United will try and insist on.

Kylian Mbappe draws blank as Real Madrid beat Real Valladolid

Kylian Mbappe  drew another blank as  Real Madrid  belatedly kick-started their LaLiga title defence with a 3-0 victory over  Real Valladolid .

The France superstar, who did not find the back of the net on his league debut in a 1-1 draw at Real Mallorca last weekend, failed to make it on to the scoresheet once again and it was left to Carlo Ancelotti’s substitutes to dash Valladolid’s hopes of snatching a draw.

Federico Valverde broke the deadlock at the Bernabeu five minutes into the second half, but it took late strikes from Brahim Diaz and Mbappe’s 86th-minute replacement Endrick – his first goal for the club – to see Madrid home.

Mamardashvili move set to go ahead

Despite those comments from Alisson, and some perceptions that they would be better of strengthening in other areas, Liverpool look set to secure Giorgi Mamardashvili before the end of the window.

The Daily Mirror reports that Liverpool are “tying up minor details ahead of completing a deal” for the Georgian, who would join in a deal worth around €35m.

It is likely that Mamardashvili would likely be immediately loaned back to Valencia.

Manchester City considered Orri Oskarsson move

More from The Athletic , this time on Manchester City.

David Ornstein reports that City have been considering a move to sign Orri Oskarsson from FC Copenhagen, as backup for Erling Haaland.

The Cityzens sold Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid earlier in the window, and the only major signing they’ve made has been the return of Ilkay Gundogan.

Ornstein reports that City “now seem unlikely to pursue a deal for the 19-year-old striker but they are firm admirers”.

Oskarsson is on a targets list that includes Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi.

Bournemouth denied dramatic Newcastle win as VAR rules out stoppage-time goal

Bournemouth  were denied a dramatic victory over  Newcastle  by a controversial  VAR  decision which robbed Dango Ouattara of a late winner.

Cherries boss Andoni Iraola was furious after the stoppage-time goal was ruled out for handball, and was booked for his protests at the end of the 1-1 draw.

There was frustration for both managers, with Newcastle boss  Eddie Howe  still unable to gain a victory at his old stamping ground.

The Magpies, trailing to Marcus Tavernier’s first-half goal, had hauled themselves level through  Anthony Gordon  and pressed hard for a late winner.

But they were denied by some top-class saves from Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto before the match exploded at the other end.

Arsenal pass Aston Villa test and prove why they’re Manchester City’s main title rivals

Two games are no barometer of a team’s title chances but the early psychological signs are on point for  Arsenal  as they ended their  Aston Villa  hoodoo with a result the Gunners of a few years ago could not have hoped to claim.

Under a manager desperate to get one over the only club he hasn’t excelled at, Villa had the chances to make it three consecutive victories over the Gunners, to once again do damage to a title challenge when one defeat can be the difference between a first league title in 20 years and further frustration.

Yet, having weathered an almighty Villainous storm, goals from  Leandro Trossard  and  Thomas Partey  left limbs flailing everywhere in the away end at Villa Park on Saturday, signalling an ultimate statement of intent, while putting a recent, damaging run of bad luck to rest.

Arsenal pass Villa test and prove why they’re Man City’s main title rivals

Yesterday, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that Nottingham Forest proposed move for Eddie Nketiah was off “after an agreement with the  Arsenal  striker could not be finalised”.

And the latest news is that Crystal Palace are now considering a move for the Arsenal man, who is valued around £30m.

Alisson reveals Liverpool contract plans amid Giorgi Mamardashvili transfer links

Liverpool  goalkeeper  Alisson Becker  wants to prolong his Anfield career after rejecting the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia.

The 31-year-old Brazil goalkeeper has made over 260 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Roma in the summer of 2018.

A cornerstone of the success Liverpool enjoyed under previous manager  Jurgen Klopp , Alisson now plans to be part of the new  Arne Slot  era at Anfield.

Manchester United agree deal with Napoli for £25m transfer of Scott McTominay

Manchester United have agreed a deal in principle to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli , giving the Scotland midfielder a decision to make whether to end his long association with the club.

The 2023 Serie A champions have offered a fee of around €30m (£25m) for McTominay which United have accepted – but the 27-year-old would need to agree personal terms and choose to leave Old Trafford for the move to be completed.

The obvious difference between Man Utd and Brighton spells bad news for Ten Hag

On Saturday afternoon at Brighton, there was one clear difference between the teams that led to the 2-1 final score. Fabian Hurzeler’s team kept playing to a distinctive idea, and played to win. Erik ten Hag made some reactive substitutions, and Manchester United just tried to stay in the game.

There’s obviously a lot that can be said about the reversal of history this represents, and why. It’s ultimately difficult not to put it down to basic game management.

Slot takes a back seat as Liverpool kick off new Anfield reign

An undemonstrative man stood with his hands in his pockets. Now and again, he conveyed instructions, but in an unflashy manner. There were no animated gestures, no fist pumps, no sprints along the touchline. The fourth official was not harangued, which is presumably how he prefers it.

The Arne Slot reign began at Anfield and if so far he is defined by who he is not, it is in part because Jurgen Klopp , literally and metaphorically, was such a colossal figure. But the initial impression is that there is life after Klopp.

Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Ugarte latest, Sancho deal and major injury blow

Manchester United are set to confirm Manuel Ugarte's move from PSG, plus the latest on Old Trafford exits for Jadon Sancho, Scott McTominay and more fringe players

  • Big injury blow ahead of Liverpool 16:37
  • Will Manuel Ugarte play against Liverpool 11:46
  • McTominay flying out for Napoli medical 10:16
  • Man Utd enter Toney race 12:40
  • Updated 22:16, 29 Aug 2024

Manchester United are running out of time to get their final deals done before transfer deadline day, but are set to finally get their hands on Manuel Ugarte .

United and Paris Saint-Germain have reached a compromise over Ugarte, with the Premier League club to land the central midfield enforcer after a lengthy wait - with a Thursday announcement anticipated. There have been departures to help free up squad space, with Hannibal Mejbri among the latest to leave, but there's more work to be done.

Jadon Sancho and Scott McTominay are also likely to leave before the transfer window closes, though nothing is official. McTominay is set to complete a move to Napoli after United agreed a €30million (£25.4m) fee with the Serie A side, and is undergoing a medical on Thursday. However, fellow Scotland international Billy Gilmour won't be joining him there.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth has also been working on a sensational swap deal that would see Raheem Sterling make the move to Old Trafford and Sancho join Chelsea , with Sterling's need for minutes becoming clear. If Sancho doesn't move to West London, though, Juventus could yet pounce.

Scroll down as Mirror Football brings you the latest transfer news from Old Trafford throughout the day...

That's all folks

That's your lot for tonight.

We'll be back in the morning with all the Deadline Day news, done deals and everything else you can think of from Old Trafford.

See you there!

Sancho 'offered to Dortmund'

United have offered Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund, reports GiveMeSport .

Chelsea and Juventus are both pushing to sign the England international, though Dortmund are now in the frame to sign the winger.

The Bundesliga outfit are considering tabling a ‘last-minute rescue package’ to re-sign the 24-year-old after last season’s short-term loan deal.

Raheem Sterling latest

So tonight, the Independent reports that Arsenal are also showing an interest in Raheem Sterling.

Mirror Football understands that Sterling has been offered to Arsenal, with the Gunners still believed to be looking to add a wide attacking player to their squad before the transfer deadline.

But it is far from a given that they actually make a move. If Sterling is to stay in the Premier League and get a new club, it does seem like United is his biggest option.

Ivan Toney Update

Ivan Toney ( Nathan Stirk)

Here's Hojlund!

Well what do we have here?

Looks like Rasmus Hojlund putting in work.

He's not been seen so far this season, but he looks on course for a return soon - if not this weekend, then certainly after the international break.

Pogba unhappy with Evra

You may have seen quotes from Patrice Evra doing the rounds, talking about Graeme Souness and Paul Pogba.

It turns out Pogba isn't best pleased with some of Evra's rememberings, particularly the one about him saying he deserved to win the Ballon d'Or while they were team-mates at Juventus.

Sources close to Pogba insist he never expected or stated he deserved to win the Ballon d’Or. He also rejects many of the claims made by Evra within the interview, which are either a distortion of the truth, or wholly inaccurate.

Big injury blow ahead of Liverpool

Ten Hag told to start Zirkzee

Erik ten Hag needs to start Joshua Zirkzee against Liverpool , according to former Manchester United striker Louis Saha.

“He’s a player that’s very interesting and gets involved in the right places," Saha told Betfred .

"I’d like to see his game improve with more minutes and confidence."

Zirkzee scored from the bench on his Premier League debut, but has played just 75 minutes so far for his new club.

Remember him?

Of course you do!

It wasn't that long ago, was it?

Well anyway, Wout Weghorst has completed his move from Burnley back to the Netherlands, where he's signed for Ajax.

Amrabat 'agreement' in place

Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce have a 'rough agreement' on a deal for Sofyan Amrabat, according to reports on the continent (via Football Espana ).

They want the former Manchester United loanee in a loan-to-buy deal, but Atletico Madrid - pushing for a straight loan - are also interested.

United's move for Manuel Ugarte means their interest in bringing Amrabat back to Old Trafford appears to be over.

Sancho return 'always difficult'

Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham believes it was always going to be tough for Jadon Sancho to force his way back into Erik ten Hag's plans.

"After everything that happened between Erik ten Hag and Jadon Sancho last year, it was always going to be difficult for him to resume his Manchester United career while ten Hag was in charge," Sheringham told Prime Casino .

"They haven’t kissed and made up, have they? It’s not a harmonious relationship between the pair of them; it can’t be.

"I don’t see it as a bed of roses in any sense whatsoever despite what has been said publicly. He hasn’t featured for United this season."

McTominay won't be joined by Gilmour

Napoli won't be partnering Scott McTominay with Billy Gilmour this season.

That's because Brighton now want to hang onto Gilmour following an injury to Matt O'Riley.

Summer signing O'Riley limped off less than 10 minutes into his debut and will require surgery, with no immediate timeframe on his return.

Sterling handed warning amid United links

Pundit and former footballer Tony Cottee has told Raheem Sterling he needs to be playing regular football if he wants to earn an England recall in time for the 2026 World Cup.

Manchester United have explored a move for the winger, who has been told he is surplus to requirements at Chelsea.

"You're not gonna [make the England squad] if you stay at Chelsea and you're training with the other 20 players who ain't got a position in the squad at the moment," Cottee, speaking in partnership with Altenar , said.

"That's not going to help. You don't want to go somewhere where you're not going to be a regular, so he needs to go somewhere where he's going to play.

"The wages are going to be a problem, we know that. But I would've thought Chelsea will contribute, and whoever buys or takes him on loan will pay £100,000 or £150,000 a week of his wages. He just needs to play football."

Final Europa League ties to be settled tonight

Manchester United will learn tomorrow who lies ahead in the Europa League.

This season's competition will be the first with a new league format, with 36 teams beginning the competition rather than 32.

A number of play-off matches will take place tonight, with Erik ten Hag's former side Ajax among those in action.

The Amsterdam club have a 4-1 first-leg lead as they welcome Polish outfit Jagiellonia Bialystok to the Dutch capital.

Will Manuel Ugarte play against Liverpool

Manchester United are expected to announce Manuel Ugarte in plenty of time for this weekend's game, but whether he's ready to feature is another matter.

Ugarte wasn't part of PSG's squad for the start of their Ligue 1 season, so may lack match sharpness despite playing for Uruguay at the Copa America earlier in the summer.

Fellow summer signing Matthijs de Ligt has been restricted to a couple of outings from the bench, and Erik ten Hag may wish to ease in the midfielder in a similar way.

Mazraoui opens up on Man Utd move

Noussair Mazraoui has spoken about the process behind his move to Manchester United and the wait he faced.

The Morocco full-back joined from Bayern Munich, but the move could only be completed once United sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham.

“When I heard the Manchester United option, I knew I wanted it," Mazraoui told Voetbal International (via Sport Witness ).

"That immediately felt good, but I had to wait until they sold the other right back.

"You don’t just say goodbye to Bayern, but I was ready for something different."

Wonderkid Kone 'set to sign'

Malian teenager Sekou Kone could join United from Guidars FC today, according to L'Equipe (via Get French Football News ).

It would be a first move to Europe for the teenage midfielder, who played every match for his country's under-17 team as they reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2023 at that age group.

Kone, 18, would initially link up with United's Under-21 squad.

McTominay flying out for Napoli medical

Scott McTominay is expected to undergo his Napoli medical today after flying out to Italy.

The Scotland midfielder will make a permanent move to link up with Antonio Conte's side.

His new team-mates will include former Ajax winger David Neres, who completed a big-money move from Benfica earlier in the window.

Hannibal makes losing start after United exit

Hannibal Mejbri was thrown straight into Burnley's starting XI last night after signing permanently from Manchester United.

The Tunisia midfielder, who has moved to Turf Moor for £5.4m plus add-ons, played the first 45 minutes against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

It was a debut to forget, though, with a Goncalo Guedes double sending the Premier League side through.

There haven't been any new updates on Manchester United's pursuit of Raheem Sterling from the United side, but Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has laid out the state of play.

"We’re going to see. Because I prefer to be honest with the player, with Raheem, I’ve been exactly the same," Maresca told reporters when asked about the future of out-of-favour players, with Sterling just one of a number affected.

"The ones who are not involved, they are all players who are not going to be involved and they don’t get any minutes in case they stay.

"I don’t know what happens when the window closes. We will see who is here and who is not here. The only thing I can say is the ones who are going to get minutes are the ones who I think can help us.

"It’s not just Raheem. It’s all the players who in this moment are training apart. In the moment the transfer window closes, they are not going to get minutes. I’ve already been clear with them and honest and this is the only reason why."

Sancho 'holding out for Chelsea'

According to The Guardian , Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is still hopeful of moving to Chelsea this summer.

United's Dan Ashworth has been exploring a swap deal involving Sancho and out-of-favour Blues star Raheem Sterling, albeit with no luck so far.

"I know Jadon very well from many years with [Manchester] City," Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca told reporters before his team's Europa Conference League meeting with Servette.

"I know him very well. But he is not our player. We will see what happens.”

Alonso draws line under United links

Marcos Alonso won't be joining Manchester United this summer, having instead completed a Celta Vigo switch.

The former Chelsea left-back was discussed around Old Trafford amid injuries at left-back, but has instead stayed in Spain after leaving Barcelona in June.

Alonso has joined Celta on an initial one-year deal, with an option for a second.

Could Liverpool's Chiesa move help with Sancho deal?

Juventus have been among the clubs in the Jadon Sancho, and they could be about to receive a bit of a financial boost.

Juve, like many other clubs this summer, have been looking to offload players surplus to requirement. Federico Chiesa is one of those, with the Italian set to join Liverpool in a cut-price deal.

With one wide forward on the way out, might there still be time to add Sancho? That may depend on how desperate the United man is to stay in England, with Chelsea remaining keen.

When will Man Utd announce Manuel Ugarte?

Today is expected to be the day when Manchester United's Manuel Ugarte swoop is confirmed.

The Uruguay international is on his way from Paris Saint-Germain in a permanent deal, just 12 months after moving to the Parc des Princes.

His arrival means he will be eligible for Sunday's match against Liverpool, though his match sharpness is another matter.

United handed home draw in Carabao Cup

Manchester United will play Barnsley in the third round of the Carabao Cup after the full draw was completed on Wednesday.

It's a home tie for Erik ten Hag's team, who receive a bye to round three due to their European involvement.

Barnsley, who play in League One, beat Championship side Sheffield United to make it through.

Elsewhere there are a pair of all-Premier League ties coming up, with Liverpool hosting West Ham and Everton at home to Southampton.

Ugarte move shows state of Mendes relationship

Manchester United's relationship with Jorge Mendes might have appeared fractured following the Cristiano Ronaldo saga, but this summer indicates things have changed .

United failed to secure Ronaldo the Champions League move Mendes craved, with the forward instead moving to Saudi Arabia.

Now, though, Ugarte is poised to be the second summer signing represented by Mendes after an earlier deal for Leny Yoro.

Good morning

Hello and welcome back to Mirror Football 's coverage of all things Manchester United.

Today could be the day Manuel Ugarte's move becomes official, while there's plenty of movement on other fronts too.

Stay with us for all the latest.

Sterling told to retire

Former Chelsea star Vinnie Jones has suggested Raheem Sterling should consider retirement after he was exiled by Enzo Maresca .

Although Manchester United are in talks with Chelsea over a swap deal involving Sterling and Jadon Sancho, Jones believes the winger should contemplate walking away from the sport altogether. "Sterling not being in the squad was a little eyebrow raiser," he told the Daily Mail .

"Everything comes to an end though and he's done all right." Jones retired from football in 1998 at the age of 34, with the footballer going on to forge a successful acting career.

And he believes Sterling could follow suit and retire early, adding: "He scored a few goals, and he might do a job for someone else, but he's had a fantastic career and if I was him I might think about going into something else.

"He must be financially set up for life. So, go and enjoy life. He's given the sport a lot in terms of England fans and at Liverpool and Man City. He's given a lot of fans a lot of enjoyment over the years and I don't like seeing top players like him drift down through the leagues."

Man Utd eye two loans

According to the Manchester Evening News , Manchester United are hoping to send both Sonny Aljofree and Elyh Harrison out on loan before the transfer window slams shut.

The club is said to believe the pair will 'benefit from a loan spell' and 'talks are progressing' over moves for both of them.

Man Utd enter Toney race

Manchester United have reportedly held talks over a potential swoop for Ivan Toney ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

The Red Devils are close to wrapping up a deal for Manuel Ugarte , who will follow Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui through the door.

And it has now been claimed that Manchester United have also held exploratory talks over a deal for Toney, who is expected to move on from Brentford in the coming days .

That's according to a new report from The Evening Standard , who believe that initial talks have been held between the top brass at Old Trafford and Brentford over a deal for the 28-year-old England star.

Sterling complication

Manchester United and Chelsea are pursuing a blockbuster swap deal for out-of-favour stars Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling - but manifold obstacles threaten to stymie the deal .

A swap deal concerning both disfavoured wingers appears to appeal to both parties. Dan Ashworth is reportedly the driving force behind United's move to sign Sterling, with the Red Devils' new sporting director familiar with the former Manchester City man during his time in the England set-up.

However, the Daily Mail have reported that obstacles remain that could thwart the deal, including the £70million owed to Sterling in wages and bonuses for the remaining three years of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Offloading Sancho's £300,000-a-week salary from their wage bill is one of many key reasons behind United's attempts to push the winger on this summer. Thus, reaching an agreement with Chelsea over Sterling's financial settlement could prove challenging.

The Daily Mail also state that any deal struck would be driven by United's terms, and a player swap is "still an unlikely solution". However, with both clubs in need of a deal soon and the transfer window looming, the swap deal could prove to be the only tenable option.

Ashworth's role in Ugarte deal

Dan Ashworth did not travel to France to thrash out a deal for Manuel Ugarte in order to oversee a number of Manchester United outgoings.

The Red Devils have finally struck an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for Ugarte, 23, after weeks of negotiations and the Uruguay international is expected to be United's fifth and final summer signing shortly.

It has since emerged that technical director Jason Wilcox flew out with Matt Hargreaves, United's director of negotiations, to iron out the final details on a deal which will see Erik ten Hag land his top midfield target in a deal which could reach £51million.

But United's new sporting director remained in Manchester to finalise exits for Scott McTominay , Hannibal Mejbri and Jadon Sancho , according to The Mail .

Don’t miss

Sterling's key trait.

Peter Beardsley is the only player to have worn the shirts of Manchester United , Liverpool and Manchester City - so Raheem Sterling would be following in hallowed footsteps should he get to realise his childhood dream of moving to Old Trafford.

‌Sterling has been told in no uncertain terms that he is surplus to requirements at Chelsea - and with Jadon Sancho still out in the cold in Manchester despite agreeing a truce with United boss Erik ten Hag , it has been suggested that a swap deal makes sense for both clubs.

United’s first two games of the Premier League season has seen Ten Hag ask Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount rotate in the role of deep-lying striker. I t’s fair to say, the plan hasn’t got the best out of either midfielder. It was only when Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score the winner against Fulham that United started to really threaten.‌

And in the 2-1 defeat at Brighton on Saturday, both players were substituted. United have got no shortage of talent in the wide areas, with Marcus Rashford , Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo. Don’t forget, Ten Hag also has £95million winger Antony at his disposal.

‌But Sterling showed during his prime years under Pep Guardiola that he has the kind of versatility that Ten Hag needs .

Hannibal joins Burnley

Hannibal Mejbri is excited to work under Burnley coach Scott Parker after sealing his permanent switch from Manchester United.

Mejbri has completed a permanent move to Burnley for an initial fee of £5.4milliom potentially rising to £9.4m. United have inserted a buyback clause in the deal, as well as an initial 50 per cent sell-on clause for the Tunisia midfielder.

Paris-born Mejbri played at Turf Moor last September in United’s 1-0 win and is looking forward to playing in front of the Clarets fans. “I’m very excited,” he said. “I’m very happy to be here and I can’t wait to see the fans.

“I’ve played against Burnley before at Turf Moor and the atmosphere was amazing. After speaking to the coach, the project sounded good to me and hopefully we can achieve success.”

Ronaldo confirms retirement plan

Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he will retire within the next three years , but insisted he feels he still has unfinished business in the game.

Ronaldo has revealed he will call it a day within the next three years. But while some may have been hoping for one final return to Europe at boyhood club Sporting Lisbon, Ronaldo will instead be spending his final years at Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo told NOW: "I don't know if I will retire soon, in two or three years... but probably I will retire here at Al-Nassr. I'm very happy at this club, I feel good in this country too. I'm happy to play in Saudi Arabia and I want to continue."

Sterling a Man Utd fan

Raheem Sterling has previously admitted he was a "massive" Manchester United fan when he was growing up.

"I shouldn’t really say this — not now, definitely not now! — but when I was young I was a massive United fan," Sterling said back in 2019 when he was playing for Manchester City. "I had an old United kit, from when they won the last FA Cup."

No Chilwell plans

According to the Manchester Evening News , Manchester United are not considering a move for Ben Chilwell.

That is despite left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia currently being sidelined with injuries. United are said to feel confident that Diogo Dalot and Noussai Mazraoui can deputise for now, while teenage prospect Harry Amass has been promoted to the first team after an impressive pre-season.

Everton eye Amrabat

According to Fabrizio Romano, Everton have enquired about signing midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina.

Amrabat spent last season on loan at Manchester United, but the deal was not made permanent with the Red Devils instead focusing their efforts on Manuel Ugarte. However, it is claimed signing Amrabat will be a 'difficult deal' for Everton to pull off.

McTominay latest

Manchester United have raised over £85million selling players and Scott McTominay is their latest departure, with possibly Jadon Sancho to follow him.

McTominay, 27, flew to Italy yesterday to have his medical over his £25million move to Napoli.

McTominay will end his 22-year association with United and the Scotland midfielder joined them as a five-year-old.

United are sad to see him go, but understand he wants more first-team football and Ugarte’s arrival would have pushed him even further down the midfield pecking order.

United identified Ugarte early in the window and feel he can be a star for them after he was named in the Best XI at this summer’s Copa America.

Ashworth's Sterling plan

Dan Ashworth has been working on a deal which would see Manchester United bring Raheem Sterling to Old Trafford without paying an initial outlay, it has been claimed.

With United already spending big on their new signings, though, Ashworth has recognised the need to be smart when it comes to any remaining deal. With Chelsea already making it clear Sterling would struggle for game time in West London, the ball appears to be in their rivals' court.

According to The Telegraph , United are determined to pay no outlay for Sterling. The aim comes against the backdrop of the expectation that Chelsea would cover the bulk of Sterling's wages to allow him to leave Stamford Bridge.

Dan Ashworth and Raheem Sterling

Ugarte latest

Manchester United are finally landing Manuel Ugarte from Paris St Germain to take their summer spending to £200million.

Ugarte, 23, is becoming United’s fifth signing and the Uruguay midfielder jetted into Manchester yesterday to begin his medical.

He will sign a five-year contract at United, with PSG inserting a 10 per cent sale-on clause in his deal, to complete the club’s incoming business.

United are paying an initial £42.2million for Ugarte, rising to £51million, and the club are happy they have held firm to their valuation after pursuing him all summer.

PSG have omitted Ugarte from their squads for their opening two Ligue 1 games and the South American made it clear weeks ago that he wanted to move to Old Trafford.

Ugarte will follow Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthjis de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui into Old Trafford and United’s spending spree with cost them £200million with add-ons.

West Ham vs Manchester City AYNTK

Opposition…

Manchester City won a fourth consecutive Premier League title in May, becoming the first team in 135 years to do so when they defeated the Hammers 3-1 on the final day of the season at the Etihad Stadium.

To say City have therefore been the dominant force in English football in recent years could therefore be argued as the understatement of the century so far. Concerningly for their nearest rivals and, indeed, the rest of the Premier League, they show no signs of slowing down.

Under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola, City have won the Premier League title in six of the last seven seasons, taking the club to eight Premier Leagues won and ten English championships in total, while also leading the Citizens to an historic treble in 2023, including City’s first ever UEFA Champions League crown.

Norway centre-forward Erling Haaland has been the headline act for City so far this campaign with four goals in two appearances, after 38 goals in 45 appearances last season.

Julián Alvarez, João Cancelo, Sergio Gomez and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are amongst the departures from the Etihad Stadium this summer, while Brazil's Savinho and the returning İlkay Gündoğan have been added to Guardiola’s already star-studded squad.

Previous Meetings...

Saturday’s match will be game number 47 between West Ham United and Manchester City in the Premier League.

Given City’s status on both the domestic and European stage in the last 15 years or so, it will not be the biggest surprise to learn that the visitors to London Stadium have the larger number of victories in this fixture, picking up 29 to West Ham’s nine.

Pep Guardiola’s side proved too much for the Irons both home and away last campaign, with a second half surge seeing the visitors come from behind to win in east London before also scoring in a 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium. Phil Foden scored twice, while Rodri was also on the scoresheet that day for City.

Match Officials…

Referee:  Michael Oliver  Assistant Referees:  Stuart Burt and Dan Cook  Fourth Official:  James Bell VAR:  Darren England  Assistant VAR:  Simon Bennett

Michael Oliver has been named the referee for West Ham United’s Premier League match at home to Manchester City.

Born in Ashington, Northumberland, Oliver was introduced to refereeing by his father, Clive, at the age of 14 and became the youngest referee to officiate at Wembley Stadium when he took charge of the 2007 Conference National play-off final, aged just 22.

He had already become the youngest Football League assistant referee, youngest Football League referee, and would also become the youngest fourth official in the Premier League, taking charge of Birmingham’s top-flight game against Blackburn in 2010/11 when he was 25.

Oliver has refereed two FA Cup finals, the 2018 final between Chelsea and Manchester United and 2021 final between Chelsea and Leicester City, and also took charge of Liverpool and Manchester City's meeting in the Carabao Cup final in 2016 as well as the 2014 Community Shield between Manchester City and Arsenal.

The now 39-year-old, who in addition refereed four matches at the UEFA Euro 2024, is taking charge of his first West Ham United match of the season, having officiated the Hammers’ penultimate fixture of the 2023/24 Premier League season, at home to Luton Town, and the famous 2-0 win over Arsenal in December at the Emirates.

29th annual offbeat Ig Nobel Prize ceremony slated for Sept. 12

In 1991, Marc Abrahams founded the Ig Nobel Prize , a parody of the Nobel Prize ceremony that exalts obscure research in science. But his fascination for the funny and weird goes a long way back.

As a fourth-grader growing up in Swampscott, Abrahams was captivated by numbers, and an eccentric, joke-telling math teacher, Mrs. Bondelevitch, had a lot to do with it. His curiosity sparked, Abrahams turned to science and began collecting “weird stuff,” including a newspaper article with the headline, “Man Flushes Toilet, House Explodes,” which delighted his 10-year-old imagination.

On Thursday, Abrahams ’78, a Harvard graduate in applied mathematics, will revel in his role as emcee of the 29th First Ig Nobel Prize ceremony at Sanders Theatre, in an event that mixes comedy and science and celebrates unusual research. Le Monde called Abrahams “the pope of improbable science,” and the Washington Post dubbed him “the nation’s guru of academic grunge.”

Held before the Nobel Prize awards, the Ig Nobel honors scientific achievements that “make people laugh, then think,” and highlights that there can be science even in absurd questions such as “Is a sigh ‘just a sigh’?” (Answer: No, it is an unintentional expression of negative emotions, including longing, boredom, disappointment, and defeat) or “Walking with coffee: Why does it spill?” (Answer: It’s the byproduct of the interplay between the motion of a cup and the low-viscosity liquid dynamics of what’s in it).

“We’re bringing attention to things that probably would not get much attention at all,” said Abrahams, co-founder and editor of the science humor magazine Improbable Research . “Nobel laureates get recognition, but there are millions of scientists who are advancing science, and most of them won’t get any attention at all.”

Take, for example, the team of doctors who studied the biomedical benefits and consequences of intense kissing, or the researchers who demonstrated that nearly all mammals empty their bladders in 21 seconds, or the scientists who examined how reindeer react to humans disguised as polar bears.

The Ig Nobel also honors creators who didn’t receive due recognition for their innovations. Among them are the inventor of karaoke, the three people who, probably, gave Murphy’s Law its name, and the man who, together with his father, obtained a patent for the comb-over.

Winning an Ig Nobel Prize is hard. Each year, Abrahams and a team of volunteers evaluate thousands of nominations. Some of those chosen decline the award for fear of public embarrassment, but most are thrilled and willing to pay the travel expenses to receive it in person.

The event has garnered prestige among scientists all over the world and has been popular since the first awards, held in an MIT classroom that could barely fit the crowd, mostly of amused scientists and science students. Three years later in 1994, it moved to Sanders, where it has been held before a packed audience every year.

Scientists explode a barrel of confetti

Previous ceremonies have been raucous, including scientists exploding a barrel full of confetti during the 1999 ceremony and Harvard lecturer Daniel Rosenberg (left) smashing a cinder block on the chest of colleague Nils Sorensen who lay on a bed of nails during the 2001 Ig Nobel.

In the beginning, some scientists lambasted the Ig Nobel, calling it an effort to ridicule scientific research, but the presence of genuine Nobel laureates helped dispel that notion. Most scientists embrace the effort because it shows that they can laugh at themselves and it might encourage people to get interested in science.

“There were some people who assumed we were attacking science and making fun of scientists,” said Abrahams, a former software developer who travels around the world leading Ig Nobel live shows. “But we’re defending scientists, who are trying to figure out what’s true, what’s real, and what’s useful. We want to get people curious about science. People can be scared of things they don’t understand. But if they manage to be curious before they get scared, science is not going to be scary anymore.”

Winning an Ig Nobel doesn’t prevent scientists from winning an actual Nobel. In 2000, Sir Andre Geim, Regius Professor and Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Manchester, won an Ig Nobel for his research on using magnets to levitate a frog. Ten years later, he won the 2010 Nobel in physics for his groundbreaking experiments with graphene, a thin material stronger than steel.

In an interview with the BBC , Geim, who lists the Ig Nobel win in his CV, said, “Frankly speaking, I value both my Ig Nobel Prize and Nobel Prize at the same level. For me, the Ig Nobel Prize was the manifestation that I can take jokes; a little bit of self-deprecation always helps.”

The event is organized by Improbable Research and co-sponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Society of Physics Students and the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association. A live webcast of the ceremony will begin at 5:35 p.m.

The 29th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony will be held at Sanders Theatre on Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. Tickets can be bought at the Harvard Box Office .
