Best Compression Bags for Travel – Overview

There are three common types of compression bags. There are zip-top bags, simple drawstring sacks, and buckled nylon bags. The first type — thick zip-top plastic bags work by either rolling the packed bag in such a way that the remaining air flows through a one-way valve or using a vacuum to remove trapped air. The most common compression bags, the drawstring pack are perfect for sleeping bags but do not have the best clothes compression. And then there are nylon plastic bags with buckles — one of the better carrying choices for clothes. They are square or rectangular form and is ideal for clothes packing, and their buckles essentially allow you to compress your clothes best.

Buying Guide

Ideally, you want to use a lightweight bag that is around 20% or less of the total weight for packing. Something more than that can leave you concerned about getting it completely packed until it’s checked in under the weight cap. Moreover, because the bag weighs more it places you at a disadvantage for how many things you can carry with you.

Because most compression sacks are made of nylon, they already have some sort of water-resistance. Nevertheless, considering the volatile traveling conditions, it’s better to buy waterproof, particularly if you have a larger compression sack as your main luggage type.

As for everything else, when it comes to compression bags, you get what you pay for. Aside from the reasons listed above, the other aspect you want to remember is when and how much you’ll need a compression pack. If you pay less than $10, you ‘re still going to be able to pack your baggage just as easily as if you were going to invest 10 times that price, but it’s not going to last quite as long. You often run the risk of losing or ripping the bag during your journey and locating a substitute quickly will be challenging depending on your destination.

Another issue that is mentioned occasionally using compression bags for travel is the breaking of the seams. Because you are going to compress and put stress on these stitches, the performance of the stitching is also significant. For a compression block to break mid-journey, it may be a major pain between your travels. Without a functioning compression bag, you may not be able to fit anything in your bag. Ideally, the material must be durable enough to survive the natural conditions, as well as to resist rips and breaks.

Compression Type

The more common are external adjustable straps that allow you to compress the bag manually, with air fleeing through the top closure. Alternate solutions often operate for an air purging system that uses a fabric that is waterproof but air-permeable. For the purging method, the permeable content helps air to escape when you pack and compress the bag, which probably makes compression more lightweight and effective.

Frequently Ask Questions

What is a compression bag used for.

Compression bags are used to cut bigger items, such as clothes or sleeping bags, on size and weight. Compression bags allow you to cram more stuff into your luggage by eliminating excess air and limiting things to the minimum amount of space available. Compression bags are nice to organize and conserve space, but they are difficult to open in a hurry.

Are compression bags good for travel?

They are very good for travel if you intend on bringing a lot of items like clothes for your travel or backpacking trip. But if you don’t anticipate a lot of bulky items, then a packing cube might be more suited for you.

How do you travel with a compression bag?

To use a standard travel compression bag (those that look like a giant zip loc bag), fold, don’t roll, your clothing. Before closing, roll the bag like a giant toothpaste tube to get all the air out of it. Seal off, flatten, and pack up. Wash them with dish soap and a towel to scrub.

Do compression bags reduce weight?

No, they might compress your bulky clothes but they actually add a bit of weight. Although it won’t be much so this shouldn’t be a concern if you’re trying to save on weight since the weight add would be minimal.

The Best Compression Packing Cubes For Travel

Last Updated on September 11, 2023

In Summary: I looked at 14 different brands and choose these Gonex cubes as my pick for the top compression packing cube set.

best compression bags travel

They were my favorite because:

  • The lightweight material doesn’t add unnecessary weight
  • The high-quality zips and seams should prevent ripping and zip snagging
  • They squashed my clothes down a reasonable amount
  • The large overall volume capacity of the set
  • The sizes of the cubes in the set were just right in that Goldilocks zone
  • They were the best value for money at the time of review

I also liked the LeanTravel cubes and if I only traveled with rolling luggage and never carried my luggage I would choose their set. Visually they looked really professional but since my packing cubes are hidden from view style was not as important to me.

For a more colorful design I’d suggest version 2.0 of the Well Traveled cubes .

Many of the compression bags were of a similar design. There were 2 broad categories: lightweight designs that suit hikers and backpackers, and large capacity sets that work better for business travelers or anyone traveling with rolling luggage.

While glancing at the photos might not reveal much calculating the overall volume capacity gave a better way to figure out how much compression packing cube you were getting for your buck.

So I have included the volume capacity in liters for each of the sets under consideration.

At A Glance: Our Picks For The Best Compression Packing Cubes

  • Eagle Creek 2 Piece Specter – 14 Liter Set
  • Gonex 6 Piece With Windows – 30 Liter Set
  • Gonex 4 Piece Without Windows – 32 Liter Set
  • LeanTravel 4 Piece – 50 Liter Set
  • Hynes Eagle 3 Piece – 27 Liter Set
  • Semary 3 Piece – 18 Liter Set
  • Tripped 6 Piece – 27 Liter Set
  • SuitedNomad 6 Piece -26 Liter Set
  • Coltant 5 Piece – 39 Liter Set
  • Nomadz 3 Piece + Shoe Bag – 30 Liter Set
  • Alameda 3 Piece – 18 Liter Set
  • Taskin Duplex 4 Piece – 33 Liter Set
  • Well Traveled 3 Piece Colorful Cubes – 25 Liter Set

Eagle Creek Pack-it Specter Compression Cube Set

The Eagle Creek Specter Pack-it Cubes are ultra-lightweight compression packing cubes that are well-liked despite their luxury price point.

best compression bags travel

I suppose you can technically call 2 a set but it is stretching it a bit. Especially when other manufacturers are providing sets of 5 and a laundry bag for around the same price point.

The goal of the Specter cubes was to make them as lightweight as possible. For that reason there are little weigh-saving ‘features’ like where top zip (the one you open to pack the cube) only opens half the way around. This does reduce the weight but unless you are a serious hiker worried about the tiniest fractions of ounces then it’s actually a pain that the bags can’t open all the way around.

These were the lightest compression packing cubes I came across. But only by a small margin. There are many cubes that are almost as light.

The cube had Eagle Creek branded zippers with zip pull strings. The compression zip snagged on the material regularly but after time I got the hang of using it without snagging.

Material and Build:

The Eagle Creek Pack-it cubes are made using ultra lightweight silnylon material. Silnylon (silicon impregnated nylon) is a fabric that is mostly used to make something waterproof.

These were lightest cubes I tested. But only marginally.

  • The 14 x 10 cube is 2 oz.
  • The smaller 10 x 7 cube is 1.5 oz.

The set included a 14x10x4 cube and a 10x7x4 cube.

Altogether the uncompressed volume was just under 14 liters.

That means the 2 cubes would take up 31% of a large carry on suitcase.

If you squash them down they might take up around 9 liters. That would be 20% of a carry-on.

If you wanted to squash a carry-on full of clothes you’ll need to buy 5 sets. Better make an appointment with your bank manager!

Eagle Creek offer a warranty but require you to ship the defective item to them for repair or replacement. The process has been reported to be lengthy and you need to pay the return shipping yourself.

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes

These popular Gonex cubes come in a wide range of colors. I tested the 6 piece set that includes 5 cubes and a laundry bag.

best compression bags travel

The laundry bag actually turned out to be very useful. It was great to put my dirty washing in.

They have Gonex branded zippers that work well. Snagging while opening and closing the compression zipper is probably going to happen. And you’ll need to learn how to deal with it and stop it happening. It can take some time to master it but once you get the hang of it you can use the compression zipper with no problems.

The Gonex cubes are made with a honeycomb Rip Stop nylon. I think nylon is a stronger fabric to use for the lightweight cubes. It can take the pressure you’ll put on it from stuffing the cube full.

These cubes are very lightweight. They are a good option for backpackers or anyone carrying their luggage.

There are 5 cubes in this set as well as a laundry/shoe bag:

  • Large – 15.4 x 15 x 3.54 inches
  • Medium – 11.8 x9.1 x 3.54 inches
  • Small – 9.8 x 7.5 x 3.54 inches
  • Even Smaller – 7.9 x 5.9 x 3.54 inches
  • Slim – 13 x 3.9 x 3.54 inches

Altogether that adds up to around 30 liters of packing cube space when uncompressed. That would fill 66% of a large carry on suitcase.

You can probably squash that down to around 22 liters. So once compressed this set will take up about half of a carry-on.

Gonex offer a 1 year warranty.

Gonex Travel Organizers

These Gonex travel organizers are virtually the same as the previous set except they don’t have the mesh window. Don’t be fooled by the product renders which look very different to the real product. Your choice is window or no window, other than that they are the same.

best compression bags travel

These also had Gonex branded zippers that worked well and were not cheap. It was possible to avoid snagging by putting my finger between the zip and the fabric while zipping. You can also use something like a teaspoon to do this if you have one handy.

These are made of nylon. It’s water resistant which is great if you are using the cubes with a backpack and your luggage might get wet. The fact there is no window means you need to remember what is in each cube but they are more water-resistant to keep your clothes dry.

They are well made and you can really stuff a lot of things into these. However, the more you stuff inside the harder it is to close the compression zip. I find that a moderately stuffed cube works better for my blood pressure and keeps coins out of the swear jar.

The Gonex cubes are very light. Almost as light as the Eagle Creek cubes, and even lighter on your pockets too!

This set includes 4 cubes:

  • 17.3 x 13 x 3.54 inches
  • 14.5 x 10.6 x 3.54 inches
  • 11.8 x 8.9 x 3.54 inches
  • 9.8 x 7.5 x 3.54 inches

Altogether that’s 1972 cubic inches or 32 liters of packing cube .

So uncompressed they’d take up 71% of a full-sized carry-on.

You might be able to squash them down so they only take up half your carry on once they are compressed.

1-year warranty and lifetime customer service.

LeanTravel Compression Packing Cubes

The LeanTravel 6 Piece is a large set. So large that you might not even fit them all in a carry-on before they are compressed.

best compression bags travel

If you’re looking to take packing cubes to the max or for a set to use with checked luggage then these might be your solution.

The LeanTravel cubes are made using SBS zippers. These Chinese zips are not top of the class like Japanese YKK zippers but they are good quality.

These are made with polyester with a mesh window so you can peek inside to remember what you packed.

The large cube weighs 0.4 lbs. The medium cube is 0.3 lbs and the small cube is 0.2 lbs.

Because it’s such a large set the overall combined weight of the cubes is 1.8 lbs. If you were carrying your luggage I’d say this is an unacceptable weight addition just for the sake of organisation. For rolling luggage you will probably not notice the difference, apart from when you need to lift your case into the overhead locker.

There are 6 cubes in the set. 2 large, 2 medium, and 2 small:

  • Large – 15.5 x 11.5 x 4 inches
  • Medium – 11 x 11 x 4 inches
  • Small – 11 x 7.5 x 4 inches

I love that this set is so large but I wish they would tweak the sizes a little. I can’t put the 15.5 inch cube sideways in my carry on (14 width). This means I need to put it longways and then have a 2.5 inch gap at the side. The jigsaw doesn’t quite fit neatly together.

Uncompressed this set is 50 liters in total. A maximum sized carry on at 22x14x9 inches is 45 liters. And many rollaboards are a bit less that the maximum. You won’t be able to fit this entire set in your carry-on before you compress them.

You should be able to compress these cubes down to about 37 liters. So long as you have a larger carry on close to the max you can use them all. If you want to fill your suitcase with cubes then this is a good option.

Of course you don’t need to use all the cubes every time and maybe you have someone you can share them with!

There is no mention of a warranty beyond the standard Amazon 30 day warranty.

Hynes Eagle Travel Compression Packing Cubes

Hynes Eagle make great backpacks so I was excited to review their compression packing cubes .

best compression bags travel

These use a Hynes Eagle custom molded zip. The compression zipper snagged on the material a few times during testing but not fatally.

They opted for the mesh window approach. This lets your clothes breath and also lets you see what’s inside the bag. The window is great for seeing inside the cube but it also lets in dust and water. It’s a trade off and you need to decide if windows are important enough to you to lose out on the extra protection.

The large bag really doesn’t compress much at all in the middle.

These bags are lightweight. Not as light as eagle creek specter but I wouldn’t describe them as heavy.

This is a set of 3 cubes in different sizes. The large is 18 x 13 x 3.9 inches. So it’s really designed to occupy almost 1 full layer of a rolling suitcase.

The medium case is 14.2 x 10.2 x 3.3 inches. This means that their medium cube is somewhat shallower than many of the other brands who prefer a depth of 4 inches.

The small case is 11.4 x 7.1 x 3.3 inches. Again this is smaller in depth that most other brands.

All together the space in the uncompressed packs would be 27 liters . That’s 60% of a 45 liter maximum sized rollaboard.

Squashed down you’re probably looking at 20 liters volume. That means tons of extra space if you a have a full sized carry on backpack or trolley suitcase.

There is no mention of a warranty.

Semary 3 Set Organizing Cubes

The Semary Organizing Cubes come in a 3 pack with 1 large and 2 small cubes.

best compression bags travel

The zips of these are just regular zips. Be careful with the compression zips especially if the cube is tightly packed.

These are made with ripstop nylon. In theory any small holes shouldn’t spread.

These are made with a lightweight fabric. The large cube will bulge in the middle more because the distance is greater from the zips.

Be careful with this one. At the time of writing this post, they have the wrong size on their Amazon listing. They are advertising very large sizes in the text description but in the photos they write the real sizes. There is a big difference. In one place they write the sizes as 17.5 x 12.75 inches for the large and 13.75×12.75 inches for the medium.

In the photos and in real life the sizes are 14 x 10 x 4 for the large and 10 x 7 x 4 for the 2 small cases.

This is why the reviewers are saying these are smaller than expected!

This means that the 3 cubes combined are 18 liters uncompressed . That’s 40% of a maximum carry-on.

They do compress down though and I’d guess they will take up around 13 liters once the compression zips are used.

The seller is saying they compression up to 60%. I think this is misleading. Maybe you can compress a fluffy jacket 60% but most clothes won’t compress anywhere near this much.

Beware the marketing hype.

Semary offers a lifetime warranty with immediate refunds or replacements.

Due to the discrepancies in the size description and the hyped marketing I wouldn’t recommend buying these cubes.

Tripped Travel Organizers

The Tripped Travel Organizers (Tim & Fin) are a small company that got into manufacturing their own packing cubes after seeing how expensive the big brands were.

best compression bags travel

There are a few reports of snagging with the compression zipper. As always zip slowly and with caution.

Made with lightweight water resistant ripstop polyurethane. These cubes are another design that doesn’t open all the way on 3 sides. You should probably roll your clothes when using these.

The Tripped cubes are lightweight and would suit backpackers or anyone that carries their bag.

The set I looked at comes with 2 small and 2 large cubes. The large cubes are 14×10 inches and the small cubes are 10 x 7 inches.

That mean you have 27 liters of uncompressed packing cube space . The 4 cubes uncompressed would take up about 60% of a maximum legal carryon.

How much you can squeeze them down depends on what’s in them. But you’ll probably get them down to about 20 liters in total. Or less than half a carry on. Given the long list of clothes that you can squeeze into these things maybe you’ll be able to swap out your bag for something smaller.

The set also comes with a slim tube that is great for cables, adapters and other random items. And there is laundry bag that you could also use to stop dirty shoes from messing up the inside of your bag.

Tripped Travel Gear are a small business that cares a lot about how customers perceive their service and their products. If you are not happy in any way they will replace or refund you.

SuitedNomad Compression Packing Cubes Set

This set of SuitedNomad CPC’s come with a luggage tag and transparent TSA friendly toiletries bag.

best compression bags travel

While not YKK the zippers are of a good quality. You will need to be careful when compressing that the material does not snag, but that’s very common with CPCs.

Materials and Build:

Made with strengthened ripstop nylon. They are made with reinforced seams which is important because of the pressure they will be put under from the compression. Overall it’s a well made compression cube. But I would love to see a version that opens fully on 2 sides. The current design only opens on 2 sides meaning it can be hard to get things in and out without emptying the whole cube.

The weight of the total set is 1.19 lbs. But that includes the luggage tag, the laundry bag, and the TSA friendly toiletry bag. If you consider just the bags alone they are very light and only very slightly heavier than the Eagle Creek Specter bags. The difference would be too small to notice.

Overall these compression bags are lightweight and that makes them a great option for hikers, backpackers or anyone else that will be carrying their luggage.

There are 3 cubes each a different size. The extra-large is 16x12x4 inches. The large is 14x10x4 inches. The medium is 10x7x4 inches.

Altogether you are getting 26 liters of packing cube space . That’s 57% of a standard 45 liter carry on.

But that’s before you compress the bags! You can probably squash your clothes down to about 18 liters using these bags. That would mean the 3 CPCs uses only 40% of a standard 45 liter carry on limit. You will have plenty space for a laptop, shoes, the toiletry bag.

Alternatively they might help you to downsize your bag for an underseater or a even a personal item sized bag.

The set also includes a laundry bag and a handy toiletry bag that were not used in these calculation.

SuitedNomad have identified and fixed many of the common problems that other CPCs suffer from. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better lightweight compression packing cube.

Coltant 5 Set Compression Packing Cubes

The Coltant CPC’s is a set of 4 compression cubes as well as another non-compressible bag for shoes or toiletries.

best compression bags travel

This is a large set for people who want to have a carry-on pretty much full of cubes. It comes in 4 different color options all are soft muted hues. Black, grey, heather blue and heather red.

Zippers: Got to love those YKK zippers. Zippers are often the weak point on CPCs. Not so with the Coltant.

Materials and Build: They open on 2 sides and that can make it a little harder to pack the cubes. With cubes that don’t open fully I recommend rolling clothes rather than folding. It’s hard to fold clothes and slide them inside with only 2 side of the cube open up.

The fabric is an Oxford polyester. It’s not ripstop like some other CPCs are. So don’t go packing tweasers or any sharp item that might puncture a hole in the fabric.

They also have a mesh window so you can identify the bag by viewing the contents inside. It means the cubes are not waterproof but since these are best suited to trolly-luggage your case should be watertight.

The complete set weighs 1.65 lbs. These work best for users of rolling luggage. As nice as it is to organize clothes I wouldn’t add 1.65 lbs to a backpack. Of course you don’t need to use the full set every time. The wide variety of sizes gives you plenty packing options.

4 compression packing cubes and 1 shoe bag or toiletry bag.

The 4 bags all have different sizes. 17.5×12.75 , 13.75×12.8 , 13.75×9.75 , and 11×6.75 inches. They are all 4 inches uncompressed.

This means that uncompressed the set is a whopping 39 liters of packing cube space . It will take 86% of a carry on when uncompressed.

Of course you can squash these down so they take up perhaps 30 liters. That will leave you 15 liters of space in a 45 liter carry on for that shoe bag, your laptop, your toiletries bag or anything else you want to put in there.

They offer a full refund for any reason.

It’s hard to believe Coltant can offer as much value for money as they do. This is a massive set of compression packing cubes that work really well.

Nomadz Travel Luggage-Organizer Set

This Nomadz Set come in a set of 3 with an additional shoe bag that does not compress.

best compression bags travel

The shoe bag is a really great way to stop dirty shoes making a mess. Flip-flops can be washed before you pack them, but if you travel with more than 1 pair of street shoes then a shoe bag is a good idea.

Claim premium zippers and anti-snag system.

Nomadz went for 300D snowflake polyester as well as mesh windows so you can see inside.

A more dense material helps to increase compression and reduce bulging. The result is a more rectangular, less curved compressed cube.

There is also another benefit to using a more heavy-weight material. The fabric uses to extend the size of the bag is less likely to snag on the compression zips. It is still possible to get the zip caught but if you are careful you will be able to avoid this.

At 1.52 lbs for the set Nomadz cubes are not the lightest. For that reason, they perhaps are better suited to people that roll their luggage rather than carry their bag.

There are 3 sizes of cubes. The large is 17×13.4 inches. The medium is 14×10 inches And the small cube is 11×8.5 inches.

All cubes are 4 inches uncompressed.

There is also a 17×5 shoe bag that completes the set. The shoe bag does not compress.

The 3 cubes provide 30 liters of packing space uncompressed . That’s 66% of a full-sized carry on.

How small these will squash down depends what you put in them. But you can probably expect to squash that 30 liters down to maybe 22 liters. This means that compressed the cubes will take up 50% of a 45 liter carry on.

That leaves plenty of room for the shoe bag and whatever else you want to take with you.

Nomadz mention the Amazon 30 day warranty but also say that they’ve got you covered for life and when it comes to any defects contact them and they will make it right.

Alameda Travel Compression Bags

These Alameda cubes come in a set of 1 large and 2 medium cubes.

best compression bags travel

Careless zipping might cause problems. Alameda even warn to press the extension fabric down with your finger while zipping to avoid snagging.

The cubes don’t have mesh window. But the white cubes at least are translucent so you can see what you put inside.

The fact that they don’t have a mesh window means that the cubes are water and dust resistant. So if you have a leaky backpack you’ll know your clothes have that little bit extra protection to stay dry.

Together the 3 cubes weigh only around 7 ounces. That’s about the weight of a cell phone.

The 1 large cube is 14×10 inches. It will fit nicely sideways in a 14 inch carry on.

The 2 medium cubes are 10×7 inches.

Be aware that the suitcase in that photo is a clam shell design. You could actually for 2 sets of Alameda cubes in a standard carry on uncompressed.

If you compress them you could potentially even fit 3 sets of Alameda cubes inside a 45 liter maximum carry on.

All 3 cubes together have a volume of around 18 liters uncompressed. That would be 40% of a maxium legal carry on.

Squashed down they will take up less room than that. I expect you can squash the entire set down to take up around 13 or 14 liters. This will leave you lots of room in a carry on for shoes, laptops or other items that don’t compress.

Alameda come with a lifetime warranty.

Taskin Duplex Clean & Dirty Cubes

The Taskin Duplex have a feature that I’ve not seen on any other CPCs.

best compression bags travel

Their idea to keep your clean clothes and your dirty clothes separate is an appealing one. But perhaps for most people it won’t be a deal breaker.

I could see the feature could appeal to people who travel and get their clothes really dirty. Perhaps from adventures sports or something similar, especially because the dirty clothes section of the cube is waterproof.

Hurrah! A compression packing cube with my favorite YKK zippers.

Even though YKK zippers are the best you can still snag them on the extension material. The best remedy for this is to zip slowly and carefully.

650D honeycomb ripstop ballistic nylon. These are solid. No complaints about seams bursting.

The large case weighs 219 grams and the small one is 148 grams. In total the set weighs 805 grams or 28 oz.

The 3 large cubes are 14.25 x 10.1 inches. That means that it’s a snug fit to put it sideways into a 14 inch wide carryon. I would have preferred it if they were half an inch smaller in that dimension but it’s no big deal.

Uncompressed the entire set is around 33 liters . So that would take up 73% of a full sized carry on.

Taskin don’t tell you what size they are compressed because it depends what you put in them. But they do claim you can take 40% more stuff. 40% more would mean they are compressed down from 4 inches to 2.85 inches.

Squashed down to 2.85 inches the set would be about 24 liters and take up 53% of a full-sized carry on.

There is a limited lifetime warranty against materials and workmanship defects. I can’t find examples of the warranty being honored because I can’t really find anyone complaining about defects.

Overall these are really well-made compression packing cubes. That is reflected in the price point but they have extra features and a solid reputation that may justify spending that little bit extra for something that is going to last. They are solid but they are a bit heavier than other options.

Well Traveled Compression Packing Cubes

These colorful cubes are the only cubes I came across that featured artistic designs.

best compression bags travel

The colorful designs means that they all look different and you won’t get confused which one is which. However, in this set they have 3 different sizes so you would be able to tell just from the size of the cube alone.

The zippers themselves seem to be sturdy and high quality. It’s the seams at the zippers that have been suspect in the past.

The latest versions of this product open on all three side allowing you to pack your clothes in easily.

Materials & Workmanship:

They are made with 420d ripstop polyester that will strengthen the fabric and small holes or punctures shouldn’t spread.

To save you time reading them all, any negative reviews are because of instances where the seams burst.

Even some of the positive reviews were initially negative reviews about seams that they turned around with replacements and good customer service.

I should point out. Most people who used these cubes didn’t have any problems.

Striving For Perfection

I reached out to Well Traveled for comment about the seams ripping.

Scott Bright the owner of Well Traveled let me know that after a lot of testing they had identified the problem as inferior fabric and switched to a new manufacturer.

He has dumped all the old stock and replaced it with the new improved design from the new manufacturing company.

Scott also traveled to the factory in China to test the packing cubes himself and ensure better quality control.

If you like the designs of the Well Traveled cubes but were put off by the reports of seams breaking I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Having spoken to Well Traveled I am sure they have improved their product and these historical negative reports no longer apply to the product that is currently for sale.

How To Choose Good Compression Packing Cubes

While you might think that CPCs are all the same as each other there are some big differences between the cube sets.

Here are the things to consider then choosing a CPC set.

Check Those Zippers

Zipper failure is the biggest reason for angry customers. CPCs have that fabric to extend or compress the cube, and it can often snag. Are you a patient, careful zip user? You might need to be. Especially with the lightweight nylon varieties. Pay careful attention to the zippers on any CPC you are thinking of buying.

Top Tip: With any compression packing cube don’t over-pack it and make sure you zip the compression zipper slowly. Put your finger between the zip and the extension material to stop snagging as you close the zip.

10 oz for the set of 3

Large: 15.7 x 11.2 inches, Medium: 13.8 x 9.8 inches, Small: 11.8 x 8.5 inches. 3.75 inches deep uncompressed down to 1.8 inches compressed.

Uncompressed these 3 cubes are together around 25 liters in volume . Theoretically they can compress that 25 liters down to 12 liters, but you can’t squash the unsquashable it does depend what you put inside them.

For comparison a full-sized rolling carry on has a volume of 2772 cubic inches or around 45 liters.

So uncompressed this set takes up about half a maximum sized carry on and compressed perhaps a third of a regular carryon.

In addition to Amazon’s standard 30 days after delivery warranty Well Traveled offer a 6 month warranty on any manufacturing issues.

Customer service is pretty good and you will get a replacement if there are any problems within this time period.

Materials & Workmanship Matter

Another problem that is occasionally reported with some compression packing cubes is the seams tearing. Because you will be compressing and putting force on those seams the quality of the stitching is really important.

It would be a major pain in the ass for a compression cube to break mid-journey. You might not be able to fit everything in your case without a functioning cube.

So I advise you to pay extra attention to build quality to avoid this happening.

We’re going to look at 14 cubes. I’ll do my best to give you the lowdown on the build quality of each product in the individual reviews.

Keep An Eye On Unpacked Cube Weight

If you are a hiker or backpacker you might want to try to get lightweight cubes. There is no sense in adding extra weight to your back.

That said, even regular packing cubes usually don’t weigh a lot. It’s the clothes that you put in the cubes that accounts for most of the weight of your luggage.

Size Them Up

It’s not helpful if your packing cubes are not shaped to fit inside your bag.

For example, carry on luggage is often 22x14x9 inches. So cubes that are longer than 14 inches can’t be packed sideways. An ideal cube size to put into a carry on sideways would be 13.75 inches.

CPCs are also often sold as sets and the size and number of cubes in the set varies. The number of cubes you’ll need depends on how long your trips are and what you pack.

When you are choosing a compression packing cube it’s really time for a bit of mental Tetris. Think about the size of the bag you will be using and how you will arrange the cubes in your bag!

That’s why I calculated the total size in liters for each compression packing cube set.

For some people, a good warranty is highly valued. It shows that a manufacturer had confidence in its product. However, products with excellent warranties can cost more. In a way you are paying for the failure of the product in advance. If a product cube has a good reputation and solid reviews I don’t always think a long warranty is essential. Especially for a lower priced product like a compression packing cube.

If you buy from Amazon you have a lot of leverage because Amazon sellers hate to receive negative reviews. Especially small companies work hard to avoid this because a single bad review can be so damaging to the little guys.

FAQ’s

Do You Really Need Compression Packing Cubes?

CPC’s have 2 main features.

  • They help you organize your things
  • They help you squash down your things so they take up less space

No, they are not essential, they are just nice to have for some people. I might seem obvious to say but you don’t need to compress the cubes . If you use them uncompressed they just help you to segregate and organize your things like regular packing cubes.

They especially help if you are trying to fit many things into a small case. But if you never come close to your case being full you won’t benefit from compressing your clothes.

Also, if you are happy to have your socks mixed in with your underpants then the organization features won’t help you much either.

I think how much you like packing cubes goes right to the core of an individual’s personality. Some people just love being very organized, where others are more comfortable and perhaps even thrive on mess.

You know best what type of person you are!

How much do compression packing cubes weigh?

Even a large compression cube only weights around 2 – 4 oz. So if you had a carry on full of compression cubes they won’t seriously contribute to the overall weight of your bag.

For most travelers the weight of the cubes themselves won’t be an issue but ultralight hikers or anyone carrying their bag for long periods might have different requirements.

What can be a problem for your average Joe is that by compressing all your clothes you end up packing too many clothes!

Some people end up with a suitcase over 50 lbs because they are using packing cubes to squash down so much stuff! This can lead to extra charges for overweight luggage .

Compression packing cubes are a useful tool but if you are an over-packer then be careful how you use them.

Are packing cubes good for backpacking?

There are a few things to consider when backpacking.

  • Is your backpack rectangular? Or more curved? – The cubed shape of regular packing cubes mean they they stack nicely together in a regular suitcase. A backpack with a curved interior can actually work well with compressed cubes because well… they are no longer strictly speaking cube shaped after pulling that zip shut.
  • Do you change hotels or hostels every few days? – Compression packing cubes are great to squeeze things down and get everything into a bag under the limit. But it could see it being annoying to decompress a bag every day, remove socks, and then recompress. If you are in and out of your stuff frequently you might be better rethinking your packing strategy.
  • Do you fly on budget flights often? – Compression packing cubes can help you fit almost 50% more stuff in the same space. This can mean the difference between taking a carry on backpack vs a checking a bag. Or you might be able to downsize your carryon. It can even mean the difference between carrying only a personal item vs a carry-on. And that could be important in the future because some airlines have even started charging extra fees for regular carry-ons.

Amazon Basics 4-Piece Packing Travel Organizer Cubes Set

4-Piece Packing Travel Organizer Cubes Set

This four-piece packing cube set from Amazon Basics gets you everything you'll need for your trip at the great price of about $6 per cube. And you can choose the size of the pieces that come in your set: either four small, four medium, four large or four slim or one of each.

In our Lab testing, we appreciated that each cube has a mesh upper to easily see what's inside and top handles for easy carrying . The polyester material is super lightweight and the zippers have longer tabs than some others we tested making them easy to open and close. The cubes held an impressive amount of clothing in our packing test and they stacked nicely into a carry-on suitcase.

We noticed some loose threads when evaluating these cubes, so they may not be as durable as some other options. Note that this set is spot-clean only and not machine-washable.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Set of Isolate Compression Packing Cubes

Pack-It Set of Isolate Compression Packing Cubes

If you really want to maximize your packing space, compression packing cubes are the way to do it. In our Lab analysis, these cubes from Eagle Creek zipped down to compress about 1 inch to save more space in your suitcase. "I love their compression function," said one of our testers. "They fit a decent amount of clothing and then compress to take up much less space. They're also smaller than other cubes I've had, so they slot into a smaller carry-on suitcase with ease."

We found the zippers easier to use than those on other compression packing cubes we tested. One tester agreed, saying, " The compression function is really easy to use — the zipper is pretty seamless and doesn't snag or get caught on the cubes. " The top handle is convenient to pull them out of your luggage or backpack when needed. This set is one of the pricier styles we tested, but many GH analysts have owned Eagle Creek products for years and applaud the brand's commitment to durable and long-lasting travel gear.

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes

Compression Packing Cubes

These Gonex packing cubes compress your clothes, so you can fit as much as possible in your suitcase, and th ey are a more affordable alternative to Eagle Creek at just $22 for a three-piece set. A set of six is also available if you plan on checking a bag. The larger set includes a laundry bag to keep your dirty clothes separate on long trips. The brand recommends rolling your clothes before placing them in the cube to maximize space.

We haven't tested this set in our Lab yet, but we have received promising feedback from our at-home testers. One tester who has used these cubes on multiple vacations said: "I loved the compression aspect and how you can fit so much more because of it. They are also very large cubes. I am very happy with them and will continue to use [them]."

One tester who used this set on a trip to the Hamptons said, "The mesh made it easy to compact clothes into the packing cubes as the mesh let out any trapped in air. I also liked the configuration of the packing cubes. They fit together really well inside my suitcase." We love Away’s generous 100-day return policy , so there’s no harm in trying them out. Both the 4-piece and 6-piece sets include smaller cubes, but some testers wished they were larger.

With over 21,000 reviews and an average 4.8-star rating on Amazon, these packing cubes are popular for their easy-to-use design that's perfect when traveling with the whole family. These packing cubes are available in 10 colors, so each family member can have their own set . This set includes a laundry bag, which is a game-changer to keep dirty clothes separate.

Although we haven't tested this set in our Lab yet, online reviewers are extremely impressed with the quality of this set for the price. One online reviewer said, "The material used for the packing cubes is durable and lightweight, ensuring that they do not add unnecessary weight to my luggage. They are also quite flexible, which allows me to squeeze them into tight spaces within my suitcase without worrying about them getting damaged." Another shared, "They are worth every penny and have become an essential travel accessory for me."

Beis The Packing Cubes in Black

The Packing Cubes in Black

Many testers preferred packing cube sets that included shoe bags or laundry bags, like this set from Beis. With three different-size cubes, a toiletry pouch and two shoe bags, this set is ready for any vacation. Uniquely, they come with pre-printed labels for common items like jeans, swimsuits and underwear as well as the days of the week to keep your cubes organized.

One tester said, "The larger zip bags really helped me separate nice clothes for going out from my beach clothes/comfy clothes, which made getting ready much easier since I could find everything without unpacking my entire suitcase." While testers liked the shoe bags, some wished they were bigger to fit larger sizes and bulkier shoes like booties.

Sea to Summit Hydraulic Packing Cube

Hydraulic Packing Cube

Keeping your belongings dry and clean is of the utmost importance when heading on an outdoor adventure. In our tests, these Sea to Summit cubes held up on hikes and beach vacations alike.

Sold individually, these packing cubes feature a water-resistant exterior and tight zippers to help prevent water from seeping in. Because the zippers are designed to prevent leaking, they were a bit difficult to open and close in our tests. Note that these cubes are water-resistant (not waterproof!), so they should not be fully submerged or soaked in water.

A big fan of its water-resistant capabilities, one tester said these cubes are "great for when I have to pack away wet or dirty clothes when I am leaving a vacation." She also appreciated that she was able to easily see inside because of the translucent panel. Another tester said, "The textile is indeed water-resistant, which was a nice feature to have during my outdoor camping adventure," and that the "shell is quite durable." These don't compress, so if you want both weatherproof materials and compression, we recommend Peak Design's packing cubes .

Monos Compressible Packing Cubes

Compressible Packing Cubes

Available in sets of four or six, these cubes from Monos fit very well into our carry-on suitcase during our Lab evaluations. These cubes offer compression capabilities as well, and they reduced in size the most out of all the compression packing cubes we tested . The zippers are quite stiff, so it's challenging to compress them fully, which led some testers not to use the compression function at all. We also found the smooth material easy to clean, which is great if sand, dirt and salt water are a factor.

One tester shared, " I really liked the appearance of the packing cubes; they look simple and sleek. I enjoy the mesh top window because I can easily see my belongings and because it allows my clothes to breathe (especially useful for dirty clothes during travel)." He also said, "I appreciate the lightweight lining inside the packing cubes; it is a feature that elevates the appearance and quality of the packing cubes." These cubes are more expensive than other featured styles, but we think they are worth the investment.

Baggu Packing Cube Set

Packing Cube Set

Most packing cubes are only available in solid colors, but these trendy ones from Baggu come in fun patterns like stripes, florals and fruit prints . This set includes two packing cubes made from durable recycled nylon. We were impressed by just how lightweight these cubes are without sacrificing performance — every ounce counts! When evaluating these cubes in our Lab, we noticed they were a bit noisy (and a few testers noted the same thing).

Loving the stylish colors and patterns, one tester said, "Not only are they super cute but they are lightweight and durable. The amount you can fit in these packing cubes is amazing!" Another tester said, "I will definitely continue to use these cubes as I like them better than a set I bought off of Amazon years ago — Baggu strikes again!"

How we test packing cubes

a good housekeeping analyst testing packing cubes with a standard load of clothes in the textiles lab, good housekeeping's best packing cubes

When evaluating packing cubes, Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab pros place a standard packing load in each cube to see how much they can hold. Then, we place them in a suitcase to see how easy they are to organize. We analyze each cube in our Lab to ensure all the zippers are easy to open and close. For compression-style cubes, we pack them with a standard load and measure how much they reduce in size when compressed.

To get real-use feedback, we have consumer testers use the packing cubes on real-life trips. We had testers bring these cubes all over the world on all types of vacations, including camping trips, international getaways and local excursions.

How to choose the best packing cubes:

line break

✔️ Compression vs. regular packing cubes: Some packing cubes have compression capabilities and others don't. Cubes that compress take up slightly less space in your suitcase and are great for overpackers. Generally, compression cubes are more expensive because they have two zippers instead of one and are usually sold individually or as a pair vs. in a larger set. Some compression cubes zip all the way around, which is great if you like to place your cubes directly in the drawer at your destination, while others only open at the top.

✔️ Materials: To avoid extra weight in your luggage, most packing cubes are made with lightweight materials like nylon and mesh. While waterproof capabilities may sound like a benefit, it's probably not necessary unless you're camping, and it comes at a cost — fully sealed packing cubes don't allow for ventilation, which means your clothes may have an odor after travel.

✔️ Luggage compatibility: Depending on what type of suitcase you are using (weekender bag, carry-on or checked luggage), a different style of packing cubes might be better suited.

  • For a weekender bag , opt for smaller cubes as only two to three will fit in most weekender bags.
  • Carry-on suitcases can accommodate more cubes, including larger ones for sweaters and jeans.
  • When checking a larger suitcase , you can fit multiple sets of packing cubes. We recommend using a different color set of cubes for each member of your family for easier unpacking.

✔️ Value: Consider the cost per cube when purchasing a set. Some brands offer excellent value for their larger sets.

✔️ How do I use packing cubes?

Most sets come with different-sized cubes that are designed for certain items — small cubes for your underwear and larger cubes for shirts and pants, for example. Everyone has a preference for either rolling or folding clothes , but when packing in a cube, our pros say you should roll to avoid wrinkles. Rolling likely won't save as much space in a traditional packing cube, but many brands recommend it for compression picks. Doing this, and storing like items together, will make it much easier to find exactly what you want without rummaging through your bag. ✔️ Do packing cubes really save space? Yes! Packing cubes ensure that every item has a spot in your suitcase without it bursting at the seams. To further max out every inch, look for styles with compression. These work by having two zippers — one that closes the cube and a second that tightly compresses it to flatten your clothes and save space. ✔️ Do packing cubes wrinkle clothes? One of the main reasons clothes come out of your suitcase looking wrinkly is because they've shifted around during the trip. Packing cubes keep all your clothes still, so items are actually less likely to wrinkle. Some fabrics will wrinkle no matter what (hello, linen!), so we recommend choosing travel dresses and pants in more forgiving fabrics like polyester and Tencel for your next trip.

Common Compression Travel Bag Questions

best compression bags travel

This is a good compression bag set to try out traveling because they are so easy to use. They come in 3 different sizes to help fit any size luggage you plan on bringing. They bags are also thicker than most other compression bags, so you don’t need to worry about a zipper or other pointy objects popping them. The great thing about the Amazon Basics bags is that it is so easy to remove the air with the hand pump. Definitely the easiest option for air removal outside of using a full-on vacuum cleaner.

The drawback to this set is that it can be hard to get a tight seal, it took me several attempts. And if you are using these bags for traveling it can also be a bit of a pain. This is because you will also need to bring the small hand pump that is included so that you can re-compress the bags on your way home.

best compression bags travel

If you want a variety of sizes for a low price point, these bags are a great option! The bags come in three travel-friendly sizes, although I do think their smallest sizes a bit too small for my preferences. You might use it for scarfs or bathing suits and make it work perfectly well though. The plastic is also a bit thinner than the other bags, so I was worried about popping it when I began to roll. However, in the end that wasn’t an issue and I was able to get all the air out without issue.

These bags you will simply fill the bag, seal, and roll the air out with no need for a pump or vacuum.

best compression bags travel

This pack of travel compression bags comes in two different sizes that are perfect for travel. Both sizes work well for checked bags or carry on luggage. They could even be squeezed into a backpack or personal bag if you’re tight on space. Which always seems to happen to me on my way home from trips! Also, what makes Saversaver stand out among the other compression bags for traveling is their quality seal. This brand is know for their airtight seals that last long term.

To get the air out of these Spacesaver bags, you simply need to roll it out. No need for a vacuum or pumps that are not travel-friendly.

best compression bags travel

These compression bags are my top budget pick for travel compression bags. I have used mine for years, and they have held up really well over the years and on many trips. These bags are durable, and do a great job at keeping a tight seal. One of the key points for this particular pack from Hibag is the fact that they come in the perfect sizes for travel. In this combo pack you will get six checked bag sized bags, and six bags that are the perfect size for carry-on bags.

To use these, you simply put your clothes in until it’s filled to the line on the bag. Next you seal the bag, and then gently roll the bag and clothes until the air is out. The only downside being that it can take a some effort to roll it, and I feel like I’m going to pop it if I don’t start off very slowly rolling.

best compression bags travel

In the top spot, the best overall compression bags for travel is this set from Well Traveled. At first glance, it may seem like a regular packing cube set, but they are actually compression bags as well. This makes makes them so much more versatile.

Over the years I’ve used used plenty of packing cubes to organize my suitcase, but have always ditched them for compression bags when I was tight on space. But with this set you get the high quality materials and practicality of a packing cube, along with the compression created with their double zipper design. This also makes it so much easier and quicker to compress on the go, which is why it’s our top pick.

Do compression travel bags really work?

Yes, travel compression bags really work! Especially for clothing, scarves, blankets, towels, stuffed animals, or most any soft bulky item. This makes them especially useful for packing for colder weather.

Do clothes wrinkle in compression bags?

Yes, your clothes will still wrinkle if you use a compression bag. However, if you fold or roll them properly they will not wrinkle any more than they would if they were normally packed in a suitcase. You can also keep a travel-sized bottle of wrinkle release spray to help.

How do you travel with a compression travel bag?

Once your bag is compressed and sealed, you can pack it inside your luggage normally. It’s important to make sure you get the right sized compression travel bags to ensure that they can lie completely flat inside your luggage. If not, you will not be optimizing your luggage space and are back to square one.

It is recommended, if you’re in doubt, just pick a smaller size compression travel bag. This way they will be able to lie flat and stack without issue. However, if you accidentally buy a bag that is too big, there is still a way to make it work. Simply measure the size of your luggage and make sure to only fill the bag to that width. Then when you compress it, it will still lay flat, with the excess bag easily folded under.

Do compression bags work for travel?

Compression bags can be highly effective for travel, helping you maximize space in your luggage and keep your belongings organized. These bags work by removing excess air from your clothing and other items, allowing you to pack more efficiently. Here are some benefits of using compression bags for travel:

  • Maximizes Luggage Space: Compression bags can significantly reduce the volume of your clothes, allowing you to fit more items into your suitcase or backpack. This is especially useful when you have limited packing space or want to avoid checking in extra baggage on flights.
  • Keeps Clothes Organized: Compression bags help keep your clothing neatly organized. You can separate items by category or outfit, making it easier to find what you need during your trip.
  • Protects Clothes: These bags can also help protect your clothes from wrinkles, moisture, and odors. By removing air, they create a barrier against potential damage during travel.
  • Easy to Use: Most compression bags are simple to use. Just pack your items, seal the bag, and roll out the air. Some compression bags even come with built-in air valves for effortless compression.
  • Versatile: Compression bags are not limited to clothing; you can use them for other travel essentials like blankets, pillows, or even toiletries to save space.

Best Compression Bags of 2020 and How to Use Them.

The Best Compression Bags of 2020 and How to Use Them

If you've ever gone overboard with the souvenirs or wanted to pack just one more outfit for a getaway, waving a magic wand and willing extra suitcase space into existence might've felt like the only fix. Luckily, there is an entire travel accessories category built around creating more packing leeway, and it doesn't have anything to do with sorcery. Compression bags and sacks are designed to reduce the bulk of clothing and other compressible items by squeezing out excess air and volume. Poof!: that pile of stuff you want to pack is all of a sudden way more manageable. Now you have room for the snow globes, back-up ensembles, and other things that simply cannot be left behind. Magic!

How to Use Compression Bags

Compression bags fall into four general buckets. There are zip-top plastic bags, dry bags (designed for outdoor activities), basic drawstring sacks, and nylon bags with compression buckles. The first type—the thick zip-close plastic bags—work by either rolling the packed bag so that the remaining air escapes through a one-way valve or by using a vacuum or pump to remove trapped air. Next up, we have compression dry bags, aka stuff sacks. These feature waterproof seams and zippers, plus compression buckles. Buckles that go around the entire bag are more effective than roll-down tops with a buckle, as the extra material ends up using precious cargo space. The most basic of compression bags, the drawstring sack, is great for sleeping bags, but does not provide the best compression for clothes. And finally, there are nylon bags with compression buckles—one of the best options for packing clothes. Their typically square or rectangle shape is best for accommodating clothing, and their buckles effectively prune space and make your load more manageable.

What Is a Compression Bag Used For?

Compression bags are used to slash the size and bulk of larger items, such as clothing or sleeping bags. By removing extra air and constricting items to the smallest amount of space possible, compression bags allow you to fit more things into your luggage. Compression bags are great for organization and space-saving, but they’re tricky to open in a hurry (so don’t store a rain jacket in one).

How to Use Compression Bags

What Sort of Items Are They Used For?

Sweaters, puffy jackets, and other hefty items made from flexible fabrics are ideal candidates for the compression-bag treatment. Compression bags will make no difference for structured objects, like jewelry, shoes, electronics, books. But if you’re wanting to sneak in additional warm layers for a ski trip  or simply get away with a few “just in case” options, confining your wardrobe via compression bags is the way to do it.

Do They Really Save Space?

Yes, compression bags really, truly save space. The larger the item, the larger the potential space payoff. Think of compression bags and sacks as packing tools that can shrink unwieldy space-hoggers to a fraction of their size, depending on the material. Even compressing itty items like swimsuits , travel dresses , shorts , and blouses is beneficial—it creates more negative space for bringing extra stuff or stashing vacation purchases. Just remember that compression bags save space, but don’t cut weight.

How Do They Work?

  • Roll or fold clothes to be as small or flat as possible.
  • Place the clothing inside the compression bag, leaving enough room to securely fasten it shut.
  • Using the particular compression method—be it a vacuum, valve, drawstring, or series of straps—tighten the bag. This pushes out excess air from within the bag until it cannot be made any smaller.
  • Double-check that the bag or sack is sealed well, then set aside to pack into a suitcase, backpack, or travel bag.
  • Place the compressed, packed bags from largest to smallest at the bottom of a suitcase moving up, or from the back panel of a backpack moving forward.
  • Arrange any additional non-compressible items around the compressed bags to ensure they fit and are not damaged during travel.

The Best Compression Bags for Travel

Osprey Pack StraightJacket Compression Sack.

Osprey Packs StraightJacket Compression Sack

Our across-the-board top pick,  Osprey’s StraightJacket Compression Sack  is made from durable nylon and features heavy-stitched seams that protect against overpacking-induced tearing. The stuff sack’s zipper runs the length of the back, so loading up and accessing clothes is a cinch. Water-resistant coating will keep contents dry, so as long as the bag isn’t totally submerged.

The Best Compression Bag for Sleeping Bags

ALPS Mountaineering Compression Stuff Sack.

ALPS Mountaineering Compression Stuff Sack

Rolling up and packing a slippery sleeping bag with a mind of its own: infuriating. Keep your camping-kindled Zen in tact by loosely rolling up and slipping your sleeping bag into  ALPS Mountaineering’s Compression Stuff Sack , whose four  winged straps shield the bag from rips and distribute pressure to make cumbersome pieces (like sleeping bags) nice and compact.

The Best Compression Bag for Backpacking

Sea to Summit Event Compression Dry Sack.

Sea to Summit eVENT Compression Dry Sacks

Similar to most other dry compression bags, the waterproof  Sea to Summit eVENT Compression Dry Sack has a buckle at the top (also known as a lid). What makes it stand out from the rest is its  hood for the lid. After rolling down the top to push out excess air, it’s buckled then fitted by a secondary lid. In short: the entire thing can be compressed a second time.

The Best Roll-Up Compression Bag

Acrodo Space Saver Travel Bags.

Acrodo Space Saver Travel Bags for Clothes

This 10-pack  comes with five large (23 x 15.5 inches) and five extra-large (27.5 x 19.5 inches) thick plastic bags that don’t require a vacuum to remove air and seal. Simply place inside and roll up the bag, squishing out all surplus air along the way. You’re left with a shrunken air-tight and waterproof bag ready to slip into your luggage.

The Best Vacuum Travel Bags with Pump

Spacesaver Premium Vacuum Storage Bags.

Spacesaver Premium Vacuum Storage Bags

These hard-core plastic bags by Spacesaver are intended for household items like pillows and comforters, but they’re game-changers for travel, too. Between the travel-friendly hand pump (a blessing when you’re packing for the return trip), the double-zip seal, and the triple-seal valve, every bit of air out gets sucked out and none gets back in.

The Best Small Compression Bag

Sea to Summit Ultra-SIL Compression Sack.

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Compression Sack

Sea to Summit’s ripstop fabric sacks come in a range of sizes, but the small comes in at just under nine inches in length, while the extra-small is about five and a half inches. Despite their small size, the lightweight sacks have four winged compression straps for security and evenly doled out pressure.

The Best Compression Cubes for Travel

TRIPPED Travel Gear Compression Packing Cubes.

TRIPPED Travel Gear  Packing Cubes Travel Organizer

All packing cubes are good for organizing contents, but not all are good for condensing. This set of packing cubes pulls double duty, providing order and compression for a tidy suitcase with less heft. Open the expansion pocket zipper, pack clothes, then zip the first zipper to close. Then, to remove air, press on the cube until it is flat as you zip the expanded pocket closed.

The Best Hanging Packing Cubes

Hanging Portable Luggage Suitcase Closet Shelving Organizer.

Artostravel Hanging Mesh Organizer

Though it’s not a true compression bag, Artostravel’s waterproof hanging closet organizer  does a lot to pull its weight on a trip. For starters, each of its compartments zips closed—a luxury not found on many hanging packing cubes.  In addition to the two zippered compartments for clothes and toiletries, there is a third pocket that can be unzipped to expand and pack dirty clothes or shoes.

These $17 Amazon compression bags will save you so much space in your suitcase

best compression bags travel

As a travel writer, I should have packing down to a science — or at least a fine art. However, even with all my best tricks and the help of this handy 4-in-1 toiletries container , I still struggle to fit everything I need into my suitcase.

Fortunately, I own some of the best expert-recommended luggage . It puts up with my abuse. My poor carry-on has survived three years of me sitting on it and fighting the zipper to force it closed. But I'm tired of starting every trip out with my bags bursting at the seams. So, recently I decided to try these bestselling roll-up space savers that I found on Amazon. Here's why I think they're worth the hype.

shop We couldn't resist sharing these home hacks — and they're all under $20

Hibag travel compression bags.

12 Travel Compression Bags, Hibag 12-Pack Roll-Up Space Saver Storage Bags for Travel, Suitcase Size (12-Travel)

Travel Compression Bags (Set of 12)

12 bags for $17.

I'm too cheap to pay a baggage fee, so the idea of paying $17 for a few plastic bags was a hard pill to swallow at first. I like that these Hibag Travel Compression Bags — which have over 3,600 five-star ratings from Amazon shoppers — come with 12 storage bags. That's less than $1.25 per bag. I also like that they come in two sizes, medium and large. I mostly use the larger ones because it only takes two of them to pack all I need for a week in my carry-on. But even the medium size can up to five days' worth of clothes. I don't need all 12 bags, but I think that number is great for families or big groups trying to save space.

Do these compression bags work?

Initially, I was worried that these bags wouldn't work that well since they don't require a vacuum. My vacuum seal bags, which I use at home for larger items like blankets and puffy coats , work great. But that's because my powerful Hoover can suck out all the air in a matter of seconds.

Getting the air out of these compression bags is a little trickier. First, I fill the bag with my clothes . Some people roll their clothes to save more space, but I prefer to lay mine out in a pile like you'd see in a shop. Next, I zip it shut, making a few passes with the zipper to make sure there are no openings. Remember: Air is the enemy. Thankfully, the bags have a double-zipper design and come with stay-on clips that keep the zipper securely shut.

best compression bags travel

shop 34 must-have Amazon travel essentials for your next trip — starting at $9

Finally, I roll the zipped-up bag to remove the air. This step requires some manpower and sometimes a bit of maneuvering. It takes a lot of effort if you just use your forearms to roll the bag. Since I don't have that much strength, I put my entire weight onto it. It may look silly, but it's an effective way to push the air out. In just a few seconds, the bag is much flatter and easier to roll.

Writer Katie Jackson packing a Travel compression bag in her bedroom

It's easy to follow the instructions since they're conveniently printed directly onto the bag. I think the biggest mistake people make is trying to load them past the fill line. It's better to use two 2/3-full bags than one overstuffed bag. The latter will be too hard to roll, and you'll end up trapping the air inside.

I have so much more packing room

The Hibag compression bags claim to save up to 80 percent of space. While I haven't achieved that result (yet), I've definitely noticed that my carry-on storage space has grown. I'm only using half the space that I'm accustomed to cramming clothing and essentials into. These problem solvers have practically taken 100 percent of the pain out of packing.

When it comes to travel, these compression bags are a no-brainer for easy packing. However, Amazon has a huge selection of affordable storage options you can shop to make preparing for you next trip even more effortless.

Honestly, I don't even need an upcoming trip as an excuse to use these storage bags . If you could see under my bed (which I'm thankful you can't), you'll find at least five room's worth of stuff neatly packed there. While I normally use my regular vacuum seal bags for underbed storage, the Hibag ones work just as well.

So, if you like the challenge of starting each trip with a packing puzzle, stay away from these compression bags. They'll make it too easy. But if you're like me, tired of having to sit on your suitcase to close it and always worried about not having room to bring home souvenirs, these space-saving bags are a life saver.

TripSavvy / Chloe Jeong

Packing for a trip is no easy feat, yet packing cubes can offer the organization and space we seek. But with so many packing cubes to choose from, how can we be sure which are the best?

We took on this challenge and had six travelers test 23 packing cube sets. They stuffed clothes and toiletries into the packing cubes, running them through various tests to determine which worked the best in terms of capacity, design, quality, and value. The result? We found the top packing cubes in a wide range of categories, from the best for maximum compression to the best for durability, families, and more.

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, rei co-op expandable packing cube set.

Solid value

Durable, protective exterior

Big time space saving

The REI Co-Op Expandable Packing Cube Set only comes with two cubes. However, our tester loved their clever design, which sees the zipper curve around the perimeter of the cube twice for ultimate compression. In fact, the medium cube can go from 13 liters to 8.5 liters, while the large cube’s capacity changes from 21 liters to 14 liters when using the compression zipper.

Testers noted that the Bluesign-approved ripstop nylon fabric was akin to tent fabric and waterproof to boot. Of course, the mesh section won’t do much against water, but it does allow travelers to see what’s in the cube before opening it. The top handle makes pulling these cubes out of your suitcase easy, while the side handle is a bonus. For the price, you get two incredibly effective packing cubes with the kind of long-lasting material and stitching you’d expect from REI Co-op. The set fits comfortably in a carry-on suitcase and allows room for a toiletry bag.

Dimensions: Large: 14.5 x 10.5 x 6 inches, medium: 12 x 8 x 6 inches | Material: Ripstop nylon (Bluesign-approved), polyester mesh (Bluesign-approved) | Number of Cubes:  2

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Gonex compression packing cubes.

Simple and effective

Could be more protective

Our testers were surprised by the capabilities of this no-frills set of four packing cubes. They stuffed them all to the brim and used the double zippers to compress the cubes down. There was no indication that the threaded seams were stressed. This aspect made the testers overlook that the material is not as water-resistant as advertised. You can always double-wrap liquids, but you can’t always find packing cubes with excellent compression capabilities to fit a lot in a little space. Keep in mind, however, that the zippers do not go all the way around the cube. Our tester didn’t have any problem with that, but it is something we thought best to note.

The four pieces range in size from small to extra-large, giving you plenty of options for organizing all your items. With tons of color options and a phenomenal price point, we had to choose this set as our runner-up.

Dimensions: Extra-large: 17.3 x 13 x 3.54 inches, large: 4.5 x 10.6 x 3.54 inches, medium: 11.8 x 8.9 x 3.54 inches, small: 9.8 x 7.5 x 3.54 inches | Material: Ripstop nylon | Number of Cubes:  4

Veken Packing Cubes With Laundry and Shoe Bag

 Amazon

Large selection of pieces

Hassle-free packing system

Contents are easily visible

Not ideal for over-packers

You get a lot for a low price when it comes to the Veken Packing Cubes set. Buyers receive four cubes of various sizes plus two additional bags—a laundry bag and a shoe bag. The set comes in a wide range of colors but lacks a compression zipper, making them more apt for organization than saving space. See inside the cubes via the transparent strip of fabric and a small mesh section or just pack the cubes according to the clothing label found on the bottom right-hand corner of the cube.

Because the packing cubes don’t have compression zippers, this set works best for travelers with large suitcases who simply want their belongings well organized and easy to find.

Dimensions: Extra-large: 17.5 x 12.15 x 4 inches, large: 13.75 x 12.75 x 4 inches, medium: 13.75 x 9.75 x 4 inches, small: 11 x 6.75 x 4 inches, shoe bag: 16.96 x 9.06 x 4.72 inches, laundry bag: 20 x 14 inches | Material: Nylon, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyester | Number of Cubes: 4 cubes, 2 bags

Best Compression

Well traveled compression packing cubes.

Great for highly organized travelers

Choice of various shades

Easy to maintain

Not water resistant

The Well Traveled Compression Packing Cubes set includes three cubes and one drawstring bag that can be used to store shoes or as a laundry bag. Available in a few colors, this set is reasonably priced and has an excellent compression zipper that maximizes your luggage space. In the larger cube, our tester fit one pair of jeans, two short-sleeve shirts, and two long-sleeve shirts. The medium cube fit two pairs of socks and two pairs of underwear; we packed the small cube with travel toiletries . When a traveler utilizes the compression zipper, the cubes go from 5 inches in width to 1 inch.

These cubes are not as structured as they appear in marketing photos. And unfortunately, our tester found that they didn't protect against spilled liquids. That said, they are machine washable and have tiny pockets to fit one of the 50 luggage cards included in the package.

Dimensions: Large: 10 x 5 x 14 inches, medium: 8 x 5 x 11.5 inches, small: 5.5 x 5 x 7 inches, laundry bag: 11 x 18 inches | Material: Twill fabric | Number of Cubes:  4

Best for Families

Shacke pak 5 set packing cubes.

Budget-friendly

Ventilation/viewing patches

Also available in set of eight

Could be more functional

Go with the packing cube set from Shacke Pak when packing for a family vacation . This five-piece set comes in a few color options and includes four cubes and one drawstring bag. Although our testers didn’t mention whether the fabric was water resistant or not, Shacke advertises that it is. Of course, that doesn’t include the mesh panels that allow you to look inside the cubes.

The cubes don’t have compression zippers, so they’re primarily intended for those who need a lot of space to keep each family member’s clothes organized and separated. You’ll better fit all these cubes in a large suitcase than a carry-on bag. Investing in multiple sets (one for each family member) is also a realistic option given the set's reasonable price tag.

Dimensions Extra-large: 17.5 x 12.75 x 4 inches, large: 13.75 x 12.75 x 4 inches, medium: 13.75 x 9.75 x 4 inches, small: 11 x 6.75 x 4 inches, Laundry Bag: 20.5 x 15.75 inches | Material: Unknown | Number of Cubes: 4 cubes, 1 bag

Best Durability

Peak design packing cubes.

Peak Design

Super light and tough fabric

Two compartments

Sustainably built

Pricey as a set

Somewhat involved to get into

You can buy Peak Design Packing Cubes as a single small or medium cube or shoe pouch or as a set of three, six, or eight. The way our testers raved about the small packing cube they tested, we suggest going for the three-piece set. But keep in mind the sets are expensive.

These packing cubes come in three color options, are designed with two handles, and have a moveable internal divider that lets you separate clothes however you see fit. Thanks to the double compression zippers, you can fit two packing cubes in the space of one. More specifically, the cubes are about 6.7 inches wide when fully expanded and have the capability of compressing to 3.1 inches. It's important to note that you'll have to use both zippers simultaneously when you want to open the main compartment.

These durable cubes are waterproof, though there is a slight gap near the zipper that, theoretically, water could get into. The likelihood of that happening is low. As we said, the price of this packing cube set is considerable, but with the superb craftsmanship and a lifetime guarantee warranty, you'll likely be satisfied with your buy.

Dimensions: Medium: 12.6 x 12.6 x 6.7 inches, small: 12.6 x 6.7 x 6.7 inches | Material: Ripstop 70D nylon/poly shell | Number of Cubes: 1 to 8

Best Personalized

Paravel packing cube quad.

Water-resistant fabric

Sustainable materials

Not the most affordable

Lacks some nice-to-have features

We can see the Paravel Packing Cube Quad being a phenomenal gift for the traveler in your life, mainly because of the excellent colors and the opportunity to have the cubes embroidered with custom monograms.

Of the four cubes, we used the larger one to pack three pairs of shoes and the medium cube to pack a couple of sweatpants, two long-sleeve shirts, two short-sleeve shirts, two pairs of underwear, and two pairs of socks. Basically, you can get a lot of clothes in the larger cubes and use the small cube for extra socks, underwear, or toiletries. Our tester noted that there was still some space left for them to pack more items in the cubes.

Although the cubes have two-way zippers, they aren’t compression zippers. We were also surprised that the cubes didn’t have handles but liked that they do have clear windows to see inside. Environmentally friendly travelers will appreciate that the fabric features 16 upcycled water bottles and meets the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and the Global Recycled Standard . It's also water resistant. The only downside? The hefty price.

Dimensions: Large: 18 x 3.75 x 12 inches, medium: 12.75 x 3.75 x 10 inches, small: 8.2 x. 3.75 x 6.25 inches | Material: OEKO-TEX Standard 100- and Global Recycled Standard-certified, water-resistant Negative nylon | Number of Cubes: 4

Best Splurge

Calpak packing cubes 5-piece set.

Fun and classic options

Feature filled

Long lasting

Only the pouch is water resistant

No compression

Packing cubes can be so bland in style, but not the Calpak Packing Cubes 5-Piece Set. Styles range from astrologically inspired to groovy wavy designs and even a few that have solid colors like hazel, olive, or black. Our tester found the four cubes and envelope pouch to be very durable. All the cubes (not the pouch) have mesh panels, organizing labels, and handles. While these cubes don’t have compression zippers and the price is a bit high, the durability of the material and the design options might be worth it.

Dimensions: Large:   17 x 12 x 3 inches, medium:   15 x 11 x 3 inches, small: 12 x 8.8 x 3 inches, envelope pouch: 13 x 10 x 1.5 inches | Material: Polyester | Number of Cubes:  5

Best Budget

Ebags classic medium compression cube.

Good capacity

Packing cubes don’t have to be expensive to be of good quality; at least, that’s what the eBags Classic Medium Packing Cube proves. This single cube is budget-friendly and spacious enough to fit four to five pieces of clothing, plus a medium-weight winter coat. The compression zipper did an excellent job of removing air and saving space. In fact, the cube offers 1.5 inches of compression or expansion. Our testers found that the thin fabric of the cube could get caught in the zipper if the cubes were not packed to the brim.

The small mesh pocket fits a set of keys or a label the size of a business card that spells out what’s in the cube. Small note: the mesh is not see-through. The top handle strap is a nice feature, as are the two different color options. The fabric is more water resistant than waterproof, so it’ll keep your clothes dry as long as excessive liquids haven’t spilled.

Dimensions 14 x 10 x 5.25 inches | Material: Nylon | Number of Cubes:  1

With excellent compression capabilities, durable ripstop fabric, and a price that won't break the bank, the REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cube Set earns our top pick. Another set that performed well was the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes , thanks to their double-zipper compression and range of available colors, not to mention that they come in a set of four.

After removing the packing cubes from their packaging, we quickly assessed the materials, checking aspects such as the stitching and zippers for durability. Our next step involved packing the cubes with apparel, shoes, and accessories such as toiletries and cosmetics before zipping them up and placing them in a carry-on suitcase to see how much space they took up. We also splashed them with a bit of water to test the water resistance of the packing cube material.

For each packing cube set, we made extensive notes on the capacity, design, material quality, and value. With any carry-on luggage , space is limited, and we wanted to ensure we chose packing cubes that not only allowed us to fit as many items as possible but had the kind of material and design that would be durable for frequent travel use. To round it out, we wanted the price to reflect the features presented.

Other Packing Cubes We Tested

Béis The Packing Cubes : While we loved the label that came with these bags, we didn't think that the price reflected the space or quality of the material.

Herschel Travel Organizers : This set's small and medium cubes were wonderful, but we found the large cube awkwardly huge. It made packing a carry-on difficult and didn't offer the kind of space-saving functionality we desired.

Briggs & Riley Packing Cubes : These cubes fit a decent amount of clothes, seemed durable, and had an excellent expansion feature, but there wasn't anything that particularly wowed us. One drawback was that one full side of the packing cubes is mesh, which won't protect your clothes if a spill occurs.

Away The Insider Packing Cubes : Mesh is great for breathability, but the mesh cover of these packing cubes isn't going to do much against spilled liquids. Not to mention, they're a bit expensive, which seems to be mainly because of the brand name.

Eagle Creek Pack-it Starter Set : If you only need two regular cubes and a folder-style cube, the Eagle Creek Pack-it Starter Set isn't too shabby, mainly because it held up to our water test. If you haven't used a folder-style cube before, it can be confusing to pack.

L.L.Bean Packing Cube Set : The price point seems accurate for L.L.Bean but may be expensive for what you get—cubes with a little stretch and a partly mesh top. Our tester wanted the cube to have a bit more structure.

Bagail Compression Packing Cubes : The price is right, and the design is pretty standard, but we were a little worried about the seam work, mainly when the compression feature was utilized. These may not last as long as others.

YAMIU Packing Cubes 7-Pcs : These packing cubes are standard, but does one need seven packing cubes? And you'll have to be okay with see-through toiletry bags.

Lean Travel Premium Compression Packing Cubes : These no-frills packing cubes may work for the newbie traveler, but fitting all three in a carry-on was a challenge for our tester.

EZPacking Clear Packing Cubes : These may work if you're comfortable with see-through packing cubes. The small cube only fits a few toiletry items.

OEE Luggage Packing Organizers : Who doesn't love a bargain? Unfortunately, the price reflects super thin material that doesn't do well with thick clothing and flimsy zippers that get caught in the mesh.

TRIPPED Compression Packing Cubes for Travel : These cubes were a bit expensive, especially since they didn't feel sturdy and the zipper didn't go all the way around the cubes, making them a little harder to pack.

What to Look For in Packing Cubes

If you check your suitcase, weight is always a consideration. Choosing packing cubes that are light enough to make a negligible difference to the airline scale is therefore important. For the most part, packing cubes are not particularly heavy, though we’ve seen some structured ones that may add a few pounds to your bag.

Packing cubes are typically made of nylon, though some use better nylon than others. Ripstop nylon, for instance, is less likely to tear than other types. Although we love to see a water-resistant or waterproof packing cube, many of our testers found that the water resistance or waterproofness wasn’t as effective as expected. Many packing cubes have mesh panels that somewhat defeat the purpose of using water-resistant fabric. Of course, mesh panels let you see inside the bag and are more breathable than plastic panels.

Packing cubes come in various sizes that differ from brand to brand. (A size small from one brand will have different measurements than a small packing cube from another brand.) Look at the dimensions for the packing cubes before buying. Most packing cubes will fit in a carry-on suitcase, though we’ve seen some large or extra-large packing cubes that are too big, take up too much space, or are an awkward size. The same thing can happen with small packing cubes—some are just too small to really fit anything inside. While not everyone likes packing cubes with compression features, they remove air and save space, which is a nice feature to consider.

Number of Cubes

Do you need more than five cubes? That all depends on the size of your family if you plan on buying one set to share, or if you're buying for a checked bag and a carry-on. Packing cube sets can range from two cubes to as many as eight. It never hurts to have a backup cube in case you rip one, lose one, or it just wears out, though if you want to limit how much you pack , it might be a good idea to buy a two- or three-cube set.

How you pack your cubes in a carry-on suitcase will depend on the type of luggage you’re using. No matter what type of carry-on bag you have, you’ll most likely have to play Tetris to figure out the best method for fitting the packing cubes in the luggage. Those with carry-on suitcases might find that positioning the cubes vertically rather than horizontally provides more space, but again, this can only happen if the suitcase is deep enough to allow such a packing strategy.

While you can find many tips and tricks for packing clothes in packing cubes, it’s likely that when you remove your clothing, it will have some wrinkles. Rolling your clothes—once you’ve buttoned and zipped all tops and bottoms—may reduce wrinkles. This is because there are fewer folds in the fabric. You could also try limiting the pressure exerted on the outside of the cube to prevent folds from compressing and forming wrinkles. Or, save yourself a headache and pack clothes made of fabrics resistant to wrinkling. As a last resort, consider bringing along a travel steamer .

Most packing cubes can be put in the washing machine on cold, but you should double-check the tag to see if they need to be hand-washed. If you put them in the washing machine, zip them up so the zipper doesn't snag on anything. Most people suggest air drying the packing cubes as the material tends to do poorly against the heat of a dryer. A hand sanitizing wipe can clean away germs or small spills if you're in a bind. Although some suggest using Febreze or essential oils to refresh packing cubes, be mindful of how oily the product may be, as it could cause the packing cube to get sticky or stain your clothing. Putting a dryer sheet in the cube may be a better option.

Top Product Overview

Best compression cubes, beenesting waterproof compression packing cube set.

BeeNesting 2 Layers Large Compression Packing Cubes for travel carry on Compressable Packing Bags for clothes 26L/Pink

The BeeNesting cubes are the best and probably the most expensive compression cubes you can get your hands on. They retail for $15-20 per cube, depending on the exact size. But you can get a set of four for about $50, which is really good value. The capacity of the entire set is 55 t-shirts!

There are three cube sizes to choose from, ranging from a small 9-liter option to a massive 26-liter cube. What’s even more impressive is that the largest cube will compress those 26 liters to just 15 liters! With enough BeeNesting cube sets, you could easily expand the capacity of your favorite suitcase by some 40%!

And it gets better. Each of these packing cubes has two compartments inside, so you can put both clean and dirty clothes inside one cube, without the two actually getting mixed together. Plus, since the cubes are made from waterproof and tear-resistant nylon, you can even use them for wet clothes.

In addition to that, I also really like that this cube set is designed so that it can fit into any type of luggage. The largest of the bunch is only 15.7” long, meaning you can even fit it into a laptop bag. And that’s the same packing cube that can fit up to 30 t-shirts.

Because of all that, I don’t mind the higher price tag so much. Yes, it’s a lot of money for just one compression cube, but you can be absolutely certain that you’re getting a high-quality product. Plus, these come with a 1-year warranty – BeeNesting will gladly replace any cubes that get damaged or stop functioning within the first year.

  • Waterproof exterior
  • Two compartments inside a cube
  • Very large capacity

Eagle Creek Pack-It Starter Set

Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Packing Cubes Set XS/S/M - Durable, Ultra-Lightweight and Water-Resistant Ripstop Fabric Suitcase Organizer Bags for Clothing and Gear, White/Strobe

The Eagle Creek Packing Cubes are one of the most popular options on the market. This is probably the lightest compression cube set you can get, which explains why they are so popular. But the high-quality materials and excellent durability also play a big role here.

These cubes are made from a 30D silnylon ripstop, which is a mixture of silicone and nylon. Silnylon is much more durable than plain nylon because the liquid silicone makes the fabric tougher and improves its tear resistance. At the same time, the liquid silicone doesn’t really add weight to the material.

One thing you should know about silnylon and Eagle Creek packing cube sets is that this material has excellent water resistance , but not so great breathability. This also means you shouldn’t put anything that has a strong scent inside because it will get into everything.

The starter set is a great option for anyone who is looking to get 2-3 compression cubes. This set includes medium, small and extra small packing cubes, which have a combined capacity of 16.2 liters. There are other sets available from the same brand, but this particular one is by far the most versatile option.

And that is because the medium-sized cube is only 14” long – it will fit into almost any piece of luggage, just like the two smaller compression cubes.

The only thing you won’t be impressed with is the price point of these cubes. The set retails for about $40, but it is usually discounted on Amazon. My issue is that you’re paying so much money for one decent packing cube and two really small ones.

Now, this is great if you’re specifically looking for small packing cubes. But, if you want to get something roomier, be sure to check out some other sets as well.

  • Extremely lightweight
  • Very durable
  • Water resistant
  • Not very breathable
  • Dimensions: 14” x 10” x 3”
  • Weight: 1 oz
  • Material: 30D Silnylon Ripstop

Vasco Compression Packing Cubes

VASCO Compression Packing Cubes for Travel – Premium Set of 3 Luggage Organizer Bags Grey

There are lots of things to love about the Vasco compression packing cubes . For one, you can choose between five different sets, which range from a two-piece set to an eight-piece one. If that’s not enough variety for everyone, then I don’t know what is!

Jokes aside, this is definitely the set that gives you the most options when it comes to combining different sizes of packing cubes. Especially if you’re looking for value – a set of eight compression cubes will set you to pack some $55, which comes down to less than $7 per cube !

The largest packing cube that you get is 15.7” long, so it should fit into all luggage types. It’s more than fine for suitcases, but you might struggle with squeezing it into some smaller backpacks and underseat bags .

The Vasco compression cubes are made from nylon and TPU reinforced mesh . Actually, the mesh is a really big part of the top cover, and that just ensures excellent breathability and minimizes odors. The fact that it is reinforced with TPU means that it’s a lot stronger than regular mesh, which warrants better compression.

The exterior of these is water-resistant, but due to the mesh, it is not waterproof. This means you should not put any wet clothes inside the Vasco compression cubes, and you should avoid exposing them to the elements.

In addition to that, it’s also important to mention that these aren’t very lightweight. The large cubes weigh about 4.8 ounces, which is double the weight of Eagle Creek cubes. These are a bit bigger, but definitely not twice the size of the lightest compression cubes you can get your hands on.

  • Great value for money
  • Breathable mesh on top
  • Lots of options
  • A little heavy
  • Not waterproof
  • Dimensions: 15.7” x 11”
  • Weight: 4.8 ounces
  • Material: Nylon and TPU reinforced mesh

Bento Compression Packing Cubes

Compression Packing Cubes for Travel, Packing Cube Set (Grey, 5 Piece Set)

If money’s tight, then the Bento compression cubes are exactly what you’re looking for. A set of five cubes will set you back only some $20, which is as affordable as it gets. And they’re pretty good cubes, so it’s not like you’re settling for something that’s low quality.

These packing cubes are made from nylon , which has excellent durability. It is tear-resistant and waterproof , so you can even use these cubes with wet clothes. But I would advise against that since there’s no mesh on the cubes, so the breathability really isn’t there.

The thing I like the most about these is that you can combine smaller cubes into the same shape as the large cube. Two small cubes are exactly the same size as one large cube, just like the combo of the medium and slim cubes. This is pretty cool because it allows you to play with the different cube sizes, in order to really make the most of your luggage.

And those are the exact cubes you get in the five-piece set – slim, medium, large, and two small compression cubes. The three-piece set includes just slim, medium, and large packing cubes.

One thing worth pointing out is that zipper quality is the most likely reason for the affordable prices of the Bento compression cubes. Although the brand claims that the cubes feature high-quality zippers, they’re neither YKK nor SBS.

And since those are the two best zipper brands on the market, it’s safe to say you’re not getting premium zippers on these packing cubes. There’s also no warranty, so be very careful when using them.

  • Very affordable
  • Fits all luggage
  • No warranty
  • Dimensions: 9.8” x 15” x 3.75” (large cube)
  • Weight: 15.2 ounces (entire set)

LeanTravel Compression Packing Cubes

LeanTravel Compression Packing Cubes for Travel Organizers with Double Zipper (6-Pack (2L+2M+2S), Grey)

The LeanTravel set of compression packing cubes is a really good option if you’re looking for value . The six cubes will set you back some $40, which is a great deal considering the quality of these packing cubes. Especially since a three-piece set from the same brand is only $10 cheaper.

The thing I like the most about these compression cubes is that they feature breathable mesh on the top cover. This ensures excellent breathability, and it lets you see the items inside each cube. But breathability is the more important factor here, especially since the cubes are made from polyester, which has a tendency to absorb odors.

These particular sets include two large, two medium, and two small compression packing cubes. The two biggest ones are great for pants, jackets, hoodies, and sweaters, while the smaller and medium cubes work wonderfully for t-shirts, underwear, and socks. And even the larger cubes are just 15.5” long, so they will easily fit into any type of luggage.

Additionally, it is also worth noting that the LeanTravel packing cubes feature SBS zippers . These are very high quality and they’re in the same league as YKK. This means that the zippers won’t malfunction, and you will be able to use them for a pretty long time.

The only downside of these cubes is that they don’t have the best water resistance. So, I would advise against using these for wet clothes, since it’s highly likely that everything in your luggage would get soaked. Especially with the breathable mesh on the top.

  • Breathable and lightweight
  • Durable SBS zippers
  • Not the most durable fabric
  • Dimensions: 15.5” x 11.5” x 4” (large cube)
  • Weight: Not specified
  • Material: Polyester

baggallini Long Compression Cube

Baggallini Unisex Adult Luggage Only Long Compression Travel Accessory- Packing Cube, Midnight Blossom

The baggallini long packing cube is one of the best things you could get for a duffel bag. It lets you divide the bag into several sections, which is absolutely perfect if you’re sharing the duffel with someone. Instead of having to pack everything in just one compartment, both sets of clothes could be neatly organized into their own compression cube.

What is even better is that the baggallini has a transparent top cover , so you will immediately be able to tell what’s in which cube. And there are also mesh inserts on the sides, for improved ventilation. But, keep in mind that plastic covers the majority of the top – the items you put in the middle won’t be able to breathe as much.

This compression cube is 14” long, so it will fit even into carry-ons and backpacks. This makes it a great option because you’re able to use it for all different types of luggage, as opposed to just that one big suitcase. You could actually fit several of these in a carry-on, so you’d be able to have every type of clothing separated if you wanted.

The only downside of the baggallini cube is that it’s kind of pricey for a single packing cube. It normally retails for about $15 – it’s not ridiculously expensive or anything, but you can easily get a set of three or four cubes for the same amount of money.

It’s not really great value for money if you’re looking to get more than one compression cube – in that case, I’d definitely recommend you check out the more versatile sets first.

  • Great for duffel bags and baggallini luggage
  • Transparent top
  • Mesh inserts on top cover
  • Not great value for money
  • Breathability could be better
  • Dimensions: 14” x 2.5” x 4”
  • Weight: 3.2 ounces
  • Material: Water resistant fabric

Suited Nomad Compression Packing Cubes

Compression cubes from Suited Nomad are a great option if you’re looking to get a set of cubes. They are made from ripstop nylon with reinforced seams, for excellent durability and tear resistance. These cubes are very lightweight , and they won’t make your suitcase a lot heavier. In fact, one medium-sized cube weighs just 2.5 ounces.

One thing I really like about the Suited Nomad packing cubes is that each one has a grab handle at the top. This makes these cubes a great option for backpacks and smaller carry-ons – you can easily pick up a cube or two with just one hand, and you could even attach these to a MOLLE panel or a compression strap of a backpack.

The sets run for about $30 and $45 depending on the size, but they’re frequently on some sort of sale – at the moment of writing this, there’s a 40% discount. The thing you need to know about the sets is that the three-piece one is the best value for money. The six-piece set only features four compression cubes, with a toiletry bag and a luggage compression strap as the final two pieces.

The toiletry bag is actually a great addition to the set – it is TSA friendly, and it’s the perfect size for carry-on toiletries. But the luggage strap is useless; its only purpose is to make your suitcase stand out on the carousel. Additionally, the larger set includes a 16” bag, while the smaller set only features 14” bags – depending on the size of your luggage, the six-piece set might not even be an option for you.

  • Reinforced seams
  • Grab handles
  • Very lightweight
  • Six piece set is not great value for money
  • Dimensions: 14” x 10” x 1.5-4” (large cube)
  • Weight: 2.5 ounces
  • Material: Ripstop nylon

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes Mesh Organizers L+M+S+XS+Slim+Laundry Bag Black

The Gonex compression cubes are another excellent option. They are affordable, versatile, and available in a variety of different colors. But they all have one feature in common – the front of these cubes is made from breathable mesh, for excellent ventilation.

And don’t worry – they are expandable and they really function as any other compression cube, even with the breathable mesh. The other fabric is actually a type of nylon, so you know the cubes are very tough and durable.

The thing I like the most about the Gonex cubes is that you can choose if you want a single cube or a set. You can get the large cubes individually, and they’re pretty affordable at less than $10 per cube. But the sets are definitely better value for money, so pick up one of those if you’re in need of more than a compression cube.

The three-piece set includes small, medium, and large cubes, and it’s best for people who’re either packing in a small suitcase or don’t have a lot of stuff to pack. These three cubes are more than enough to help you organize your clothes for a short trip, and they’re going to free up some space in your luggage as well.

The six-piece set features those three cubes, as well as additional extra small and long cubes. And it also comes with a colorful laundry bag, which is a convenient addition. The smaller cubes from these sets are actually excellent for people who want to organize every little detail, but also for folks who are used to carrying smaller luggage.

  • Mesh top cover
  • Good value for money
  • Sets include cubes of different sizes
  • Only large cubes can be purchased individually
  • Dimensions: 15.4” x 15” x 3.54”

Well Traveled Compression Packing Cubes

4-Piece Deluxe Compression Packing Cubes for Travel - Maximize Space in Luggage with HybridMax Double Capacity Design, Luxury Suitcase Organizer Bags, Large, Small, & Medium Set

The Well-Traveled set of compression packing cubes is a great option if you want something simple and affordable. It includes three packing cubes of different sizes, with the largest one being 15.7” long. This means that it is suitable for nearly all luggage, except underseat bags and small backpacks.

This is a rare set of compression packing cubes that is not available only in solid colors. One of the design options is a beautiful print, which is different on each cube. And I really like this because it helps you know what is in each cube just by glancing at them.

That’s going to be necessary since there’s no mesh on top that makes the cubes transparent. Even though that means that the breathability is not really great, the lack of mesh isn’t a bad thing. Because the entire cubes are made from high-quality ripstop, they feature really good water resistance. They are not entirely waterproof though, so I wouldn’t put any wet clothes inside these cubes.

The Well Traveled packing cubes are also really durable , mostly because of the tough material. But also because they feature double-stitched seams and really strong zippers that won’t break easily.

Another great thing about these is how inexpensive they are. The three-piece set normally retails for $25, but there’s usually some sort of discount as well. At the moment of writing this, all the colors of the set are discounted by at least 30%, which is pretty cool.

  • Unique design
  • Not breathable
  • Dimensions: 15.7” x 11.2”
  • Weight: 10.4 ounces (entire set)
  • Material: Tightly woven ripstop

eBags Classic Large Compression Cube

The eBags compression cube is a great option if you want just one really big packing cube . This is very large, and it’s not going to work with all types of carry-on luggage since it is 18” long. But you can use it with medium and large suitcases.

The exact material these packing cubes are made from is not specified – the only thing I can tell you is that it is lightweight and very durable . I assume it’s either nylon or polyester since the majority of the other cubes are made from one of those two fabrics.

One cool feature that is unique to the eBags compression packing cube is the tiny mesh pocket. It’s the size of a business card and it allows you to actually write what’s in each cube. That’s a pretty useful feature since you can’t actually see the contents of these packing cubes.

And there’s a grab handle at the top, which will make your life a little bit easier. Or at the very least, it will make it easier for you to pick up the cube and hold it, even when it is filled to capacity.

The obvious downside is the price – at almost $25, the eBags compression cube is seriously expensive. It might not be a lot of money, but you can get a set of five cubes for $5 less.

Additionally, this is a pretty heavy packing cube at 8 ounces. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but the average compression cube weighs 2-3 ounces. Yes, this one is a bit bigger than most other cubes, but not that bigger than you’d expect it to be nearly four times heavier.

  • Large capacity
  • Grab handle
  • Quite heavy
  • Dimensions: 18” x 13.5” x 3.75”
  • Weight: 8 ounces
  • Material: Not specified

What To Look For In Packing Cubes

How big is your suitcase.

The first thing you should figure out is which suitcase you want to use the cubes with. If it’s a large checked bag, then you should look for large-capacity cubes . These tend to be quite big, and they easily fit into large checked luggage.

However, if you usually travel with a carry on you need to look for smaller cubes. A large capacity cube is bigger than a 19” carry-on, and you can’t really fit it into small suitcases. And even if you were able to squeeze one, you won’t really have any space for other cubes, which beats the whole point of compression packing cubes.

Since the cubes usually come in sets of at least three, I’ll only include the dimensions of the largest set piece in the product information sections. That will at least let you know if the largest of the cubes would even fit in your luggage, which is the most important factor.

Oh, and the length is the more important thing here.

Packing Cubes With Mesh Top Covers

Some of the compression packing cubes I told you about have top covers that are made entirely from mesh . This is because of breathability – mesh is the one material that can guarantee good ventilation, and these packing cubes have an advantage over all the others.

It might seem counterintuitive to allow the smelly clothes to air out and make everything else in your luggage smelly, but that’s much better than the scent getting into the compression cube. Especially if it’s made from polyester or other synthetic materials – a strong scent can get into these materials, and you’ll never be able to get it out of them.

Because of that, I would also advise using compression bags for gym clothes or dirty laundry – they’ll be able to contain the smell inside, which guarantees that you won’t ruin a brand new compression cube with that sweaty gym t-shirt.

However, I would advise you to not put any soaking wet items inside mesh packing cubes. The water will get everywhere, and by the time you get home, half of your suitcase will be moldy and stinky. Instead, put the wet stuff into a compression bag or a plastic bag – it won’t smell nice, but at least it won’t contaminate everything else in your luggage.

Compression Cubes Vs. Regular Packing Cubes

If you haven’t used packing cubes before, there are some things you should know before you go and buy anything. The most important one is the difference between regular packing cubes and compression packing cubes.

At first glance, they both look pretty much the same. And they are really similar – the only difference is that the regular packing cubes can’t be compressed . They lack that zipper in the middle that lets you reduce the size of the cube, even with a bunch of clothes inside.

Regular packing cubes are great for people who just want to stay organized and don’t care too much about the extra space. They’re also great for your closet because everything looks so much neater when it’s properly organized inside different packing cubes.

The main advantage of compression cubes is that you’re getting additional space in your suitcase. Not as much as you would get with vacuum bags, but at least you don’t need a vacuum cleaner to be able to use these cubes. That’s actually why I prefer cubes to bags when I’m traveling – you don’t need to worry about getting your hands on a vacuum cleaner in order to fit everything in your luggage.

Pricing And Value For Money

You can buy individual compression packing cubes, or you can get them in a set . So, what sounds like the better option for you?

I would always recommend a set, simply because it’s much better value for money. Most of the cheaper packing cubes are only available as a set anyway, with the average retail price being around $20-30 for a three-piece set. But you can get much better value if you go for sets with more pieces.

The individual compression packing cubes are usually sold by high-quality brands, and they are rarely cheap. But if you’re looking to get just one cube and you know exactly how large it should be, then this is obviously the way to go.

In addition to that, the value doesn’t come just from the amount of packing cubes you get in the set. It is also important to pay attention to the materials and their durability, as well as the quality of the hardware. Some of the more expensive packing cubes will feature really high-end zippers and fully waterproof materials, which is worth the extra cash.

And a couple of the pricier compression cubes I showed you even come with a warranty , which is absolutely insane. The warranty is enough to justify the higher prices, at least in my opinion.

It’s better to pay more for a really good set of packing cubes that you know are backed by a 1-year warranty, as opposed to buying a really cheap set that’s just going to fall apart in two months. As long as you can afford the pricier option, that is.

Best Compression Packing Cubes: Our Top Choices

If you still haven’t decided on just one set of packing cubes, we’re here to help. Pick up one of our top picks to start packing like a true pro!

The best option overall is easily the BeeNesting compression cubes . They have two compartments, which will up your organization game even more. And since all of the cubes are waterproof, you could store both wet and dry clothes in the same packing cube without worrying that everything would get drenched.

These cubes are well made, really durable, and covered by warranty, so you’re definitely getting the best quality for the money.

If you’re more about value than quality, then go with the Lean Travel compression packing cubes . Their six-piece set is the best value you can get, especially since the actual cubes are really sturdy and well made. They have mesh top covers, which means that you can tell what’s in each cube just by glancing at them. And it also means excellent breathability, but not the best water resistance.

  • OPTIMAL ORGANIZATION: Keep your travel essentials neatly sorted and easily accessible with our compression packing cubes. Featuring various sizes, these organizers help maximize luggage space and minimize wrinkles, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience
  • SPACE SAVING DESIGN: Our packing cubes are designed with compression zippers to eliminate excess air, allowing you to pack more efficiently. Enjoy the benefits of a compact suitcase while keeping your clothes and accessories neatly packed and wrinkle-free

The Eagle Creek Compression Cubes are another excellent option because they are by far the lightest packing cubes you can get. And they are made from really tough and durable material, so there’s no doubt you will be able to use them for a very long time.

These compression packing cubes have really good water resistance as well, and they are super easy to keep clean. Plus, they’re covered by warranty, so even if you’re on the fence about getting them, it is worth giving Eagle Creek a shot.

A yellow compression sack next to a water bottle, a pair of shoes and some folded shirts.

I’m a Chronic Overpacker. This Compression Sack Helps Me (Literally) Squeeze More Into My Luggage.

Published May 11, 2023

No matter the length of the trip, I’m incapable of packing just the essentials. If I can’t bring half my wardrobe, three pairs of shoes, and double the amount of underwear I’ll actually need for a long weekend, is it even worth going? So, as a chronic overpacker, I’m always on the lookout for travel gear that’ll let me cram more (and then some more) into my bags.

I’ve already invested in deceptively spacious backpacks , miracle packing cubes , and dopp kits that can fit more sundries than traditional toiletry bags. But by far, the most helpful addition to my arsenal as an overpacker has been a nylon compression bag.

best compression bags travel

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Compression Sack

Staff-favorite traditional compression sack.

This 13-liter compression stuff sack can shrink to a third of its original size, squishing down a few days’ worth of apparel to maximize packing space in your carry-on.

Buying Options

Compression sacks are not just for camping.

Compression sacks are essentially stuff sacks that have been modified to compress their contents. Made of nylon with a drawstring closure, compression sacks allow you to squeeze out all the air by using the attached straps to pull the two end caps together, leaving your belongings packed into a small, dense bundle.

This is great news for overzealous packers like me who love to squeeze a week’s worth of clothes into a carry-on bag that should only be able to fit, at most, enough for a long weekend. Though most compression sack devotees tend to use them only for socks, undies, and anything else that can afford to get wrinkled, I wanted to put mine to the test and see just how much it could hold, so I stuffed it with all types of clothing, from stretchy spandex to stiff denim.

For this experiment, I purchased the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Compression Sack . Though it’s not an official pick, the Sea to Summit Big River Dry Bag is our top-pick dry bag , so I knew the brand was reputable and trusted by Wirecutter, and the reviews for the Sea to Summit compression sack seemed positive.

Condensing all my stuff to fit was fast and simple

I used the compression sack to pack for a four-day work trip—and I felt like a modern-day Mary Poppins, defying all odds as I stuffed it to the gills, cramming in more and more until I couldn’t fit anything else. Into the bag went an entire clown car of garments, including: two pairs of pants, two pairs of leggings, a pair of jeans, two T-shirts, two turtlenecks, a long-sleeve shirt, a cardigan, and socks, bras, and underwear.

To maximize all 13 liters of the Ultra-Sil Compression Pack, I rolled my softer clothes and placed them into the bag first, layering bundles of shapeless fabric into the bottom of the bag. I laid stiffer, bulkier items, like my denim jeans and my cardigan, flat on top.

Compressing the bag and watching everything inside it shrink down to a third of its original size was like watching a magic trick. It was a fast, easy task: After tightening the drawstring opening, I was able to pull the strap and squeeze all the air from the bag in under a minute.

The resulting compressed bundle was roughly the size of a bag of flour that fit into my everyday backpack , which qualifies as a personal item on most airlines. And packing the compressed bundle of clothes into my carry-on luggage allowed me to bring even more along with me, including a portable steamer to iron out those wrinkles, my toiletry kit, and a hardcover book. Everything I needed for a long weekend fit nicely into my backpack. The slippery finish of the nylon bag meant it was easy to slide into the tight space of my pack, and when I wanted to take it out, one tug of the handle on the base pulled it free.

Your underwear is definitely a personal item

The extreme compression of the Ultra-Sil Compression Pack makes it one of the most useful pieces of gear for those traveling on airlines that don’t allow free carry-ons (looking at you, Frontier and Spirit ). Personal items, which include backpacks, are permitted with even the most basic airline ticket, as long as they fit within the allotted dimensions (18 by 14 by 8 inches). Fully packed with everything I needed for my trip, my backpack easily met the requirements.

Traveling with a compression bag takes a lot of the stress out of packing for a trip, especially if you’re trying to dodge checked bag fees. But even if everything fits easily into your carry-on, or you’re checking a bag for a longer trip, a compression sack can still come in handy.

One of my coworkers brings his compression sack along on vacations to squirrel away accumulated dirty laundry, which makes unpacking at the end of his trip much easier. And the Ultra-Sil Compression Pack could end up saving the day if you need to make room in your luggage to bring home souvenirs.

Any traveler can benefit from the magical properties of a compression sack. And if you’re the type who, like me, prefers to pack for a quick weekend trip like its a weeks-long tour of Europe, you’ll never want to travel without one again.

What Are Compression Packing Cubes?

So, what are these magic organization tools? In a single sentence: Compression packing cubes are specially designed lightweight containers that compress your clothes and other items, maximizing the space in your luggage and keeping your belongings tidy.

Now, let's dig a little deeper. These cubes are akin to mini portable closets. Imagine being able to pack away your items neatly into separate compartments, rather than stuffing everything haphazardly into your suitcase. Doesn't that sound like a stress-reliever? Not only do these cubes keep your belongings organized, but they also reduce their volume substantially.

This helps you pack more efficiently, fitting more items into your luggage than you thought possible. And the best part? When you arrive at your destination, everything is neat, tidy, and easy to find. No more rummaging through your suitcase to find that one elusive sock or travel-sized shampoo.

How Do Compression Packing Cubes Work?

Intrigued about how these ingenious travel companions function? Let me paint you a picture.

Remember the last time you packed a suitcase for a trip. You started well, laying everything out, but as the space started to dwindle, you resorted to the “stuff and squeeze” method. We've all been there! Now, imagine a different scenario.

You've laid out your clothes, toiletries, and travel necessities. Instead of tossing them into the suitcase, you neatly arrange them into your compression packing cubes. Clothes in one, toiletries in another, maybe you've got a separate one for your electronics or travel documents. Each packing cube is like a mini suitcase within your suitcase. The compression packing cubes offer separate compartments for clean and dirty clothes, making them a travel essential.

Here's where the magic happens. Once your items are in the packing cube, you zip it up and then use the additional compression zipper to reduce the volume of the packing cube. It's like vacuum-packing your clothes without needing a vacuum. The result? Your bulky items become flat, compact, easy-to-organize squares that fit perfectly into your suitcase.

In short, compression packing cubes work by allowing you to fill them with clothing or other items, and then compressing the contents by using a secondary zipper, effectively reducing the volume and maximizing space in your luggage. With its spacious design, you can easily fit a week's worth of clothes into the entire cube.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Compression Packing Cubes

Venturing into the world of compression packing cubes? Excellent choice, my friends! However, not all cubes are created equal. When selecting the right cubes for your travel needs, several factors can influence your decision. Let's delve into these considerations to ensure you find the perfect match for your packing needs.

Material and Durability

When it comes to selecting compression packing cubes, the durability factor is paramount. After all, the last thing you want is for your packing cube to fall apart in the middle of your adventure. The most robust cubes are usually made from high-quality nylon or polyester, materials known for their strength and durability.

Take note, however, that durability doesn't have to mean forfeiting style or convenience. Many brands offer cubes in a variety of colors and patterns, often with a mesh panel for easy identification of contents. This panel should be tough enough to withstand the pressure of compression without tearing.

Size and Capacity

Compression cubes come in a variety of sizes, each designed to cater to specific packing needs. Smaller cubes are perfect for storing items like socks, underwear, or other accessories. Medium-sized ones are great for shirts and shorts, while larger cubes can accommodate bulkier items like jackets and pants.

You may want to consider a set that includes different sizes to cater to your entire wardrobe. This not only helps in organization but also makes efficient use of the available space in your suitcase.

When it comes to travel, especially air travel, every ounce counts. While the primary function of compression packing cubes is to save space, they should not add significant weight to your luggage.

Lightweight materials like ripstop nylon strike a balance between durability and weight. This ensures that while you save on space, you don't end up paying extra for overweight luggage at the airport.

Ease of Use and Functionality

Good quality compression packing cubes should be as user-friendly as possible. They should open and close effortlessly, with durable zippers that can withstand repeated usage. The compression zipper should also function smoothly without snagging the contents of the packing cube.

Other features to look for include handles for easy carrying and identification tags for a quick find. The level of compression is also an essential factor to consider. Ensure it’s high enough to save significant space but doesn't result in a bundle so tight that your clothes end up with deep wrinkles.

Price vs Quality

As with any purchase, striking the right balance between price and quality is key. While it may be tempting to opt for cheaper options, they may not offer the same durability or functionality as slightly more expensive ones. Investing in good quality compression packing cubes can provide better value in the long run, saving you from the inconvenience and cost of frequent replacements.

There you have it! Armed with these considerations, you're now ready to select the best compression packing cubes for your travel needs. Remember, the goal is to find a balance between durability, size, weight, functionality, and price to ensure a seamless and enjoyable travel experience.

How to Pack Efficiently Using Compression Packing Cubes

Getting your hands on a set of compression packing cubes is only half the battle. The real challenge lies in mastering the art of efficient packing . Done right, these nifty tools can revolutionize the way you travel, turning packing from a dreaded chore into a satisfying experience. Let's break it down, step by step.

Step-by-Step Guide to Packing

  • Plan Ahead: Start by laying out all the items you plan to pack and group them by type (e.g., tops, bottoms, undergarments, etc.). This step also helps eliminate any unnecessary items.
  • Fill the Cubes: Begin with the largest packing cube, fill it with the bulkiest items first. Next, move onto the smaller cubes, filling them with your lighter, smaller items. Remember, don’t overfill the cubes. Leave some room for the compression to work its magic!
  • Compress: Once filled, close the secondary zipper on each packing cube to compress your clothes. Do this gradually, to ensure that the compression is evenly distributed and you're making the most of the space-saving feature.
  • Pack Your Bag: Now that your clothes are neatly compressed and organized , it's time to pack them into your suitcase or backpack . Place the larger cubes at the bottom, and fill in the gaps with smaller ones. It's like a game of Tetris!

Tips and Tricks for Maximum Efficiency

To take your packing game to the next level, here are a few additional tips:

  • Roll Your Clothes: Rolling your clothes instead of folding can help reduce wrinkles and save space.
  • Use Cubes for More than Clothes: Packing cubes can also keep electronics, toiletries, and other travel essentials organized.
  • Empty Space is Wasted Space: Use socks and other small items to fill gaps in your packing cubes and maximize space.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using Compression Packing Cubes

As with any new travel hack, it can take some trial and error to get it right. Here are a few pitfalls to avoid:

  • Overpacking: Compression packing cubes save space, but they don’t give you an unlimited suitcase! Overstuffing your cubes can lead to broken zippers and decreased cube lifespan.
  • Underutilizing Cubes: Each cube should serve a specific purpose. Organize your items by cube to make unpacking and repacking a breeze.
  • Ignoring Weight Restrictions: While packing cubes help save space, they don't reduce weight. Keep an eye on your luggage weight to avoid fees.

How to Use Packing Cubes

  • Pack a color-coded set for each person in your group: " We have different color packing cubes for each member of the family so when we open the suitcase, it's easy for everyone to grab their own color and get organized in the hotel room or wherever," says travel writer Terry Ward, who is frequently on the go with her family. She also notes that her family is able to save on luggage fees by using packing cubes in a single checked suitcase .
  • Consider buying more than one set: Packing cubes are also useful for organizing toiletries, shoes , travel adapters and cords, and other miscellaneous items.
  • Categorize each packing cube: Pack each cube by activity or clothing type, such as activewear, swimwear and underwear.
  • Pack with the mesh side facing up: If you buy mesh packing cubes, this packing tip will help you easily identify the contents of each packing cube (which can be especially useful in the event you need to quickly locate items while at the airport).
  • Roll your clothing: Many travelers swear by rolling their clothing instead of folding it in their luggage, noting this tactic saves space and minimizes wrinkles. Use the same method when placing items into your packing cubes.
  • Use them for dirty laundry: If your packing cubes don't have pockets for dirty laundry like the Tripped Travel Gear bags do, you can still use them to contain dirty laundry; just avoid using mesh cubes if you're concerned about the smell of soiled clothing pervading your bag.
  • Take them with you on errands: Packing cubes are useful for everyday outings, too. "I use a smaller packing cube to keep diapers, wipes and a changing pad handy in my backpack when we're out exploring," says Criscione.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most travelers and travel experts agree packing cubes are worth buying – especially considering there are so many affordable, quality options on the market. Because they're designed to save space, they can help you avoid unnecessary luggage fees. Plus, they can be used universally in everything from your luggage set to your weekender bag and even a backpack .

Yes, packing cubes save space by organizing clothing and accessories into individual compartments that neatly fit inside luggage. To maximize space in your luggage, choose compression packing cubes, which eliminate extra air and zip nearly flat.

Compression packing cubes zip nearly flat once packed, while traditional packing cubes maintain their shape and fit neatly into your luggage like pieces in a puzzle. While the decision between packing cubes and compression bags is ultimately a matter of personal preference, most travel experts agree compression packing cubes are best.

Rolling your clothing will help to maximize space and prevent wrinkles, regardless of whether or not you use packing cubes.

Packing cubes are reusable (and in many cases, washable), making them a more economical and sustainable alternative to Ziploc bags.

The 7 Best Compression Sacks Will Help You Pack Everything For Your Next Trip

Whether you’re camping, backpacking, or flying around the world, compression sacks can help you get more stuff into your bag.

If you’re a chronic over-packer or a person who always considers every ‘what if’ scenario possible when figuring out what to take on a trip, compression sacks have the potential to change your life – or, at the very least, your ability to close your suitcase .

The Expert: I have hiked, backpacked, camped, and bikepacked through a good portion of this planet, including the Borneo jungle, the Karakoram Mountains , the Pamirs, and Eastern and Western Europe. I’ve written about adventure travel and gear for Dirt Rag Magazine , Adventure Cycling , BBC Travel , Popular Science , Fodors , Popular Mechanics, Bicycling , and many others.
I’m also, despite (or maybe because of) this, what some would consider an over-packer. I take the “Final Destination” approach to planning, where my mind cycles through every possible mishap that could happen in any given scenario and then pack accordingly to prevent and survive each of them. As a result, I have spent years trying and using all sorts of packing organizational gear including a plethora of compression sacks.

What to Consider When Shopping For Compression Sacks

You can put most anything you want into a compression sack. In my experience, hikers, backpackers, and bikepackers frequently use them for sleeping bags, pillows, and clothing, especially with bulky cold weather gear like down jackets. They’re great for keeping your stuff organized in your pack so you can find specific items easily.

Closure And Compression

Packed compression sacks allow you to push all of the air out of them in one of two ways. Some sacks use a one-way purge valve, which releases trapped air when you push down on the sack. Others are made with permeable fabrics like eVent , that let air naturally escape, while keeping water from getting in. In addition, many sacks feature compression straps, which allow you to thoroughly and evenly extract the air from inside the bag.

Both methods are effective, though permeable fabrics will eventually draw air back into the sack if you don’t add an additional layer of cover over them. Thankfully, most sacks come with fabric end-covers so you can control their airflow.

To keep the air out, compression sacks usually close with a drawstring or a rolltop mechanism. Rolltop sacks provide more protection from moisture than drawstrings, as well as better compression.

Compression sack capacity

Manufacturers usually measure the capacity of compression sacks in liters (L) and cubic inches. Most manufacturers make them in a range of sizes, from a 3-liter bag for small personal items to a 35-liter option for a sleeping bag or lining a hiking backpack.

While you can line a backpack or suitcase with a compression sack, I find it’s better to separate the contents of your bag into many smaller bags, rather than buying a single sack to compress everything. I usually use a few sacks in the 5 to 10 liter range, which allows me to separate and organize my clothing and gear. It also makes it easier to get to important items, like a jacket, without decompressing the whole bag.

Waterproof or not

Personally, I tend to always err on the side of waterproof or, at the very least, water resistant. Most backpacks and many cycling panniers are not waterproof themselves and packing items in waterproof stuff sacks eliminates the need for bulky rain covers. It also means that the contents of your pack won’t get wet when it’s sitting out on a tarmac waiting to be loaded onto an airplane or strapped to the top of a taxi in Indonesia during a sudden rainstorm.

Compression sack weight

Backpackers, through hikers, and bikepackers tend to be very conscious of every ounce they carry (with good reason). If you intend to use compression sacks for any of these activities, it’s important to keep in mind that compressing your pack won’t make it any lighter. If you need to keep weight in mind, don’t add more gear to your pack just because you have extra room. If you’re more of a rolling suitcase or bag kind of traveler, a couple extra ounces per stuff sack probably won’t matter much.

Though the difference in weight is very slim, you should also keep in mind that some compression sacks are designed to be ultralight, minimizing their impact on the weight of your pack.

If you’re packing for an outdoor adventure, it pays to spring for a more durable compression sack made from heavier fabrics to endure the elements and direct contact with sharp sticks and rocks. Some compression sacks are waterproof, which you may want to consider if you’re camping near a lake or bringing your gear on a kayaking trip.

How We Selected The Best Compression Sacks

I’ve always been a sucker for gear that makes travel and adventure more efficient and organized, so I’ve personally tested dozens upon dozens of compression sacks. (Only my credit card company knows the exact number. I prefer to not keep track.) To pick my favorites, I evaluated their durability, waterproofness, and other features you didn’t even know you needed, such as being able to see what’s inside without opening it.

I’ve also swapped recommendations with many of my fellow adventurers over the years about their favorite gear. (If you’ve ever hung out with a bunch of backpackers, you’ll know that inevitably you’ll end up comparing favorite gear and debating the finer points of what is and isn’t actually waterproof.) I also did plenty of research to keep up to date with the latest advances in materials and fabrication methods, including sustainability and environmentally friendly fabrics and processes.

Sea to Summit eVac Compression Dry Bag

eVac Compression Dry Bag

Sea to Summit’s eVac compression dry bags feature a rolltop closure secured with a field repair buckle. The base of each bag is made from an air-permeable fabric that pushes air out as it’s compressed.

To help with compression, it features four ladder lock straps, which eliminate bulging and allow you to compress the contents evenly for a more packable bag. A robust nylon webbing handle on the base gives you a secure grab point to easily carry it. The bag is also waterproof so your clothes and valuables stay dry, even through a storm.

I’ve used my Sea to Summit eVac bags on all sorts of excursions (many of which ended with the bags spending more time in the water than I anticipated). Trekking through the Borneo jungle, I crossed the vast – and very fast flowing – Kapuas River multiple times, plunging into cold, chest-level water with packs, trekking poles, and the firm grip of one of the local trekking guides to help keep me upright. I didn’t always stay upright, but the contents of my dry bag stayed dry even when I got soaked.

REI Co-op Lightweight Compression Sack

Lightweight Compression Sack

The first compression sacks I ever bought were REI brand, and I still use them on occasion for short trips with a suitcase (as opposed to a backpack). They aren’t made with high-end technical fabrics, but after using mine for many years, they are clearly quite tough.

Made from strong, durable ripstop nylon, the REI co-op’s compression sacks are lightweight and sturdy. Depending on what size you pick, each one comes with either three (10L) or four (15L and 20L) compression straps.

For around half the price of our other picks, these are perfect if you need to add an extra sack to your collection mid-adventure, or if you simply want to keep equipment costs down.

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Compression Sack

Ultra-Sil Compression Sack

A full set of Sea to Summit’s lightweight “Ultra-Sil” compression sacks will perfectly prepare you for just about any backpacking adventure when you’re counting every ounce.

You can get a wide range of sizes: The smallest bag, at 3.3L, is perfect for small clothing items like socks, hats and gloves. The 6L can compress additional layers and a puffy coat. I use the 10L bag to protect my Rab Neutrino sleeping bag from getting wet. There are also larger options if you’re looking for a backpack liner.

Sea to Summit’s Ultra-Sil fabric is semi-translucent, so you can see what’s inside each bag and find what you’re looking for quickly. While the fabric is waterproof, it is not sealed, so the contents will get wet if the bags get fully submerged in a river, lake, ocean, or puddle.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Roll Top Stuff Sack

Roll Top Stuff Sack

Made with 100-percent waterproof DCF Dyneema fabrics, Hyperlite’s compressible stuff sacks are an extremely lightweight storage solution. With four sizes to choose from, including a gigantic 43 liter bag, there’s a perfect option for every use case, from food bag to pack liner.

Dyneema fibers, classified as ultra high molecular weight polyethylene , have a strength-to-weight ratio that makes them one of the strongest fibers in the world. The top closure has a rolltop design with side-release buckles for a secure fit.

I first discovered these compression sacks during a five-month bicycle trip following the Silk road across Central Asia. A few of my fellow cyclists had these sacks.

One of them had an unfortunate encounter with a rocky, detritus-strewn river bank on his way to do some laundry. He tumbled down a sharp decline to the water holding onto two of these compression sacks. Thankfully, all he suffered were scratches and bruises. The sacks were completely unscathed: not a tear on any of them. We didn’t test them further, but I was impressed with how they held up.

SealLine Blocker Compression Dry Sack

Blocker Compression Dry Sack

Unlike most compression sacks, the SealLine Blocker line packs into a rectangular shape with a flat bottom, which the company claims packs 20-percent more efficiently than round stuff sacks. As anyone who has ever packed a backpack with stuff sacks knows, round bags create unutilized pockets in your pack, which you have to fill in with whatever will fit.

A rectangular sack pretty much eliminates the issue, so long as everything’s packed evenly and compressed symmetrically. See? Geometry is useful in everyday life.

Each compression sack features a buckled rolltop closure, four compression straps, and a waterproof Purge Air valve that vents trapped air for easier compression. They’re also completely waterproof, even when fully submerged, so your gear will stay dry even if you find yourself neck-deep in a river that was supposed to be “waist-high.”

SealLine Discovery View Dry Bag

Discovery View Dry Bag

SealLine manufactures the majority of its gear in its own Seattle-based factory . The company prides itself on creating a diverse range of products to fit all kinds of adventuring scenarios.

Case in point, its Discovery View Dry bags are perfect when you’re perched on the side of a canyon, or any other spot where you can’t easily rummage through your pack. The translucent, waterproof fabric allows you to easily find what you need before you open the bag.

If you buy a set, you can get bags with color-coded oval bottoms to help you keep track of which bag you’re looking through at a glance.

The DrySeal rolltop closure and waterproof PurgeAir valve make it easy to get optimal compression. One small thing to keep in mind, though: These bags are made from waterproof fabric, but the closure is not watertight. Your stuff will get soaked if the sack goes overboard.

Granite Gear Round Rock Solid Compression Sack

Round Rock Solid Compression Sack

Granite Gear’s Round Rock Solid compression sacks transform bulky, fluffy items into small, rock-hard things so you can easily fit them into your pack. Each pack is made from 210-denier nylon, which is sturdier and more durable than the build of most other packs, but still relatively lightweight.

It cinches closed with a drawstring closure at one end, and has a fabric “lid” that fits over the opening and four buckled straps to compress the bag’s contents.

Granite Gear products are known for their durability (as strong as granite). While the brand isn’t as well-known as Sea to Summit or Sealline, it has attracted what some might call a cultish following among those who like to travel to some of the world’s harshest environments (Everest, the North and South Poles, and the New York City subway system).

Q+A With Expert Traveler Vanessa Nirode

line break

How do you use/pack a compression sack?

First, place your items–clothing, sleeping bag, or otherwise–into the bag. Ideally, you want to fill the bag to the top, though you don’t need to (especially if it has a rolltop closure). That said, should be at least half-full: The compression feature may not work if it’s nearly empty.

If the sack has a rolltop closure, press down on the sack with your body weight as you fold and roll. You should hear air getting pushed out of the vent or permeable fabric.

If the sack has a top and bottom lid with connecting straps, close the buckles then tighten each strap a small amount in turns. Don’t tighten one as much as you can then move onto another. Do one a little, then the next one, and the next, and repeat a few times until you can compress no further. Tightening the straps in this manner leads to even (and more compact) compression for the whole bag.

Do clothes wrinkle in compression sacks?

Yes, your clothes will probably wrinkle when compressed in a sack. You are squeezing them tight to conserve space, and they may not keep their shape in the bag. You can minimize wrinkling by folding or rolling your clothes before putting them in the bag. I prefer rolling, since it eliminates the hard creases.

Of course, if you are making a hasty retreat, the ‘shove everything as quickly as you can into a sack’ method of packing is completely acceptable.

Do compression sacks damage down?

Compression sacks will not damage your down jackets, pillows, or sleeping bags, unless you leave the item compressed in a stuff sack for an extended period of time. After several months in a compressed bag, down items may lose their resiliency and lofting (re-fluffing) ability.

You should never store your sleeping bags (or down coats) rolled and compressed. Instead, drape them over a hanger for long term storage.

Compression Packing Bags for Travel: A Buyer's Guide

Key features to consider.

  • Material : Look for bags made from durable and lightweight materials like nylon or polyester. Ensure they are tear-resistant and can withstand the rigors of travel.
  • Size and Capacity : Consider your specific travel needs before choosing the size and capacity of the bags. If you have a lot to pack, opt for larger bags, or choose a set with different sizes to accommodate various items.
  • Compression Method : There are two common compression methods: zippered and roll-up. Zippered bags allow you to squeeze out excess air, while roll-up bags require manual rolling to remove air. Decide which method suits your packing style best.
  • Visibility : Clear or semi-transparent bags can make it easier to locate items without unpacking everything. This feature can be particularly handy when you need to quickly find something during your trip.
  • Waterproofing : Consider bags with waterproof or water-resistant properties to protect your belongings in case of spills or unexpected rain showers.
  • Ease of Use : Look for bags with user-friendly features such as double zippers, sturdy handles, and smooth compression systems. The last thing you want is to struggle with your packing bags while on the go.
  • Versatility : Some compression packing bags can double as laundry bags, or even be used for packing dirty clothes during your trip. This versatility adds value to your purchase.
  • Packability : Choose bags that are easy to fold and pack when not in use. Space-saving design is crucial, especially if you're aiming to travel light.

Benefits of Compression Packing Bags

  • Maximize Space : Compression bags allow you to squeeze out excess air, reducing the volume occupied by your clothes and other items. This extra space can be a lifeline when you're dealing with a limited suitcase capacity.
  • Organize Effectively : By grouping items into separate compression bags, you can easily organize your belongings and locate items without creating a mess. No more rummaging endlessly through your suitcase!
  • Prevent Wrinkles : When clothes are tightly packed and compressed, they are less prone to wrinkles. This means less time spent ironing and more time enjoying your travels.
  • Separate Clean and Dirty Clothes : Compression bags can help keep your clean clothes separate from the dirty ones, ensuring your fresh outfits remain fresh.
  • Protect Your Items : These bags offer an extra layer of protection against spills, leaks, and potential damage during transit. Your belongings will be shielded from unexpected mishaps.
  • Save Time : With compression packing bags, you can pack and unpack more efficiently. Say goodbye to the frustration of struggling to fit everything back into your suitcase after your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions about 13 Best Compression Packing Bags For Travel for 2023

Absolutely! Compression bags are designed to reduce the volume occupied by your belongings, helping you fit more into your suitcase or backpack.

It ultimately depends on personal preference. Zippered bags allow for quick and easy removal of air, while roll-up bags offer a more manual compression method. Choose the one that suits your needs and packing style.

While compression bags can provide some protection, they are not specifically designed for fragile items. Consider using additional padding or protective covers for delicate belongings.

Best Lightweight Packing Cubes to Organize Travel Necessities

Best overall packing cube, eagle creek pack-it isolate cube.

O ne of the conundrums of travel is separating dirty clothes from clean. The Eagle Creek Isolate Cube is one of the best packing cubes for travel because it has an internal divider that allows you to sort the contents: One side is designed to breathe (and let odors out), and the other side protects clean clothes from the transfer of the not-so-fresh scent of dirty laundry. The fabric's anti-microbial treatment helps eliminate pesky smells from lingering after you unpack.

  • Two-sided packing cube
  • Anti-odor properties
  • Machine-washable and water-resistant
  • Lifetime manufacturer's warranty
  • Less-structured shape than some

Best budget packing cube

Samsonite compression packing bags.

If you're looking for a way to save some cash on your travel accessories and pack up to twice as much on your next trip, look no further than these compression packing bags from Samsonite . They serve the same purpose as packing cubes when it comes to organizing luggage but can be compacted down, thanks to a design that lets you use a vacuum to remove the air from around clothing. Get them in a well-priced 12-pack that includes four sizes: pouch, carry-on, checked-suitcase and large packing-cube size.

  • A steal at $20
  • Airtight and watertight
  • Can also be used to store out-of-season clothes in your closet
  • Might overly compress items and make bags heavier than expected
  • Requires a vacuum to re-pack compactly

Best see-through packing cube

Eagle creek pack-it reveal cube.

Eagle Creek makes our list twice because this brand is one of the originators of the packing cube concept. The Eagle Creek Reveal Cube features a mesh window on one side, so you can eyeball what's packed inside without unzipping. It also allows air to circulate. You might not remember which cube has toiletries and which has your favorite pajamas , so this option gets rid of the guessing game.

  • Mesh design for visibility and breathability
  • Available in three colors
  • Less structured shape than some

Best lightweight packing cube

Osprey ultralight packing cube set.

Even if you're not schlepping your bags across continents, keeping bags as lightweight as possible just makes sense. You never know if you'll have to rush through the airport or need assistance with placing your carry-on in the overhead bin. That's why the Osprey Ultralight cube set is a solid choice: Each cube weighs less than 3 ounces.

  • Lightweight fabric design
  • Convenient double zipper pullers
  • J-zip design only opens on two sides

Best luxury packing cube

Roam luggage packing pods.

You can also pick among three color options.

  • Customized design for different packing needs
  • Lifetime warranty
  • 100-day free trial
  • Pricier than most packing cubes

Best packing cubes for weekends

Bagsmart expandable packing cubes.

This set of Bagsmart packing cubes let you pack more with less space. The double zippers expand to fit your clothes, socks and undergarments, then compress down to save space. Use these for a weekend camping trip or short flight when space is as a premium.

Verified purchaser Hunter Antal writes, "As someone who is a big-time overpacker, I've genuinely lost sleep over how I was going to make it work. Cue compression packing cubes! I'm genuinely very impressed by the quality of both the zippers and the cubes themselves."

  • Some options available in a six-piece set
  • I.D. tag pocket for easy organization
  • Waterproof fabric
  • Two-way zipper
  • 4,300 Amazon ratings and a 4.6-star average
  • Stitching is a bit unbalanced

What to consider when buying packing cubes

When you're deciding on the best packing cubes to buy, consider things like material, zippers and construction. Some people like lightweight fabric when every ounce counts, while others prefer something sturdier that keeps clothes neatly folded and organized throughout a trip. If long-term durability is a top concern, you probably want to stick with tried-and-true brands that are known for their quality.

Types of packing cubes

  • Lightweight packing cubes: Lightweight fabric minimizes weight in your luggage.
  • Compression packing cubes: These compress the contents via an extra zipper or the use of a vacuum, which saves space in your luggage.
  • Waterproof packing cubes: These protect your belongings from moisture.
  • Mesh packing cubes: A mesh front panel lets you see the contents without having to open the cube.
  • Cubes with multiple compartments: These offer more opportunities for organization with separated internal spaces.

How we found the best packing cubes

As shopping experts, our only job is to help you find a winning product. We start with the research and reporting basics—what products are made of, what they look like and how much they cost—to ensure that we're only recommending the buys that are worth your time and money. Then we research the features that speak to the product's quality, taking advice from industry insiders and category experts on what makes a product a smart value (or worthy of a splurge). Finally, we do the work of combing through user reviews to see how real people interact with the product, and if it stands up to real-life use.

Are packing cubes worth it?

Packing cubes are worth it because they provide more options than single-compartment packing and can suit any budget. They keep clothes organized so you can quickly locate socks and t-shirts when you unpack. Frequent travelers swear by packing cubes to save suitcase space.

How to use packing cubes?

Use packing cubes to organize your belongings and to save space. Organize by color, style, occasion, clothing type—whatever makes the most sense to you and your needs.

How many packing cubes do I need?

The number of cubes you need depends on the trip and your packing style. Spread out everything on your packing list so you can see what you have to determine how many cubes to get. You can also take measurements inside your suitcase, backpack or duffel and buy cubes that fit snugly in your bag.

Do packing cubes wrinkle clothes?

Any time clothes are packed tightly, they risk wrinkling, though most users report that clothes get less wrinkled in cubes. You can try the clothes rolling method or pack Downy Wrinkle Releaser to smooth and freshen up your clothes when you reach your destination.

I Haven’t Checked a Bag in 10 Years — Here, My 14 Sure-fire Travel Essentials to Get Everything in a Carry-on

These frequent flier-approved picks cover all of your travel bases, and they start at $10.

Travel + Leisure

I travel twice a month covering destinations that inspire readers and those planning vacations. In order to efficiently move through airports, take Ubers, and lug everything on my own, I’ve had to master the art of packing light . But as a chronic overpacker in my former days, this didn’t come easy. However, once I started embracing the carry-on-only lifestyle, I would never go back. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve checked a bag — regardless of where I’m going or how long the trip is.

In addition to quality luggage pieces (I swear by my Gregory Quadro 22-Inch Hardcase Carry-On and always bring Calpak’s Luka Duffel as my personal carry-on tote to fit extra clothes and accessories), successful carry-on-only traveling involves strategic packing. When planning which clothes to bring, I think in terms of outfits and try to incorporate versatile capsule wardrobe items that match with several things (layers are also key). Lastly, compression packing cubes work wonders — as do my 14 travel essentials that always make my packing list so I never have to check a bag.

These go-to items include packing aids, versatile clothing and accessories, and more to help me maximize every inch of suitcase space without going over the limit. Even better, they start at $10 at Amazon.

Cambond Compression Packing Cubes

Compression organizers are game-changers. Not only do they flatten your items so you can pack more in your suitcase, but they also aid in organizing your outfits; you can pack your clothes according to style, color, or category. Cambond’s sturdy nylon packing cubes have a double zipper for easy access and hassle-free compressing. They’re also water-resistant, which means that they'll protect your items from any potential leaks or spills. I also like that they’re lightweight; the last thing you want to do is add weight to your carry-on.

They’re sold in sets with various sizing options, and are available in 45 colors. This item is a favorite among shoppers because of how effective the compression is for packing. And, according to one Amazon reviewer , they helped them travel to Europe for "a week with only a backpack and a carry-on."

Anrabess Romper With Pockets

I always pack a romper because it saves space and maximizes your outfit potential. This super cute one from Amazon-loved brand Anrabess is made with a comfy polyester-rayon-spandex blend to ensure comfort and stretch. You can play with the neckline and wear it several ways — crewneck style, off-the-shoulder, or Bardot-style. The tie-front drawstring at the waist accentuates your silhouette, offering a flattering fit.

The fabric is thick so it’s not see-through. It makes the perfect loungewear item and is versatile enough to wear to the beach, picnics, by the pool, and even out running errands. Pair it with a nice pair of sandals or heels and it’s the perfect outfit for dinner. I’m a huge fan of pockets, and the romper has two side pockets for holding lightweight (but essential) items such as lipstick or cash.

M.M. LaFleur Moreland Jacket

M.M.Lafleur

A seasonless suit is a no-brainer when I head out for work trips. Even if you’re traveling for pleasure, sporting a blazer and a pair of trousers creates an instantly sophisticated look. M.M. LaFleur’s Origami Tech collection is specifically designed to be your ultimate travel companion; the Moreland Jacket and matching Colby pants are wrinkle-resistant and machine-washable.

The set can be worn together or separately; the jacket matches well with a good, old pair of jeans on sightseeing days or leggings when you’re catching a flight. You can also wear it over a dress or blouse-skirt combo for polished lunch or dinner looks. To get the same workwear-inspired travel outfit for less, you can grab Amazon’s best-selling blazer for $58.

Amazhiyu Button-Down Midi Dress With Pockets and Belt

Pack a dress that does everything, one that you can wear during the day and do double duty at night. While I’m obsessed with the celeb-favorite Jenni Kayne Day Dress , at a whopping $395, a girl’s got to budget. That’s why, when I found this linen button down dress at Amazon, I couldn’t wait to try it on. It features a sleeveless, collar design with side slits and a removable self-tie belt to give it shape; it’s very flattering and accommodates all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, I use my favorite woven belt (I'll go into more detail about it later) instead, which instantly creates a different vacation look without requiring additional clothing items.

It’s a great travel piece for spring because it’s made of 100 percent linen, which is known for being a breathable and moisture-wicking fabric. There are two side pockets for stashing essentials, a feature that reviewers praised. One shopper wrote , "I absolutely love this dress. The pockets are really big, which is great. Everything about this dress is quality, and I stayed cool in the summer heat." Another noted that the pockets "are flat and don't stick out" when they have stuff in them.

Lightbird Foldable Summer Straw Bucket Beach Hat

This packable straw hat is the best travel hack. There have been many times where I’ve wanted to bring a stylish hat, but ended up not doing so because it takes up too much real estate in my luggage. That's no longer a worry with this stylish bucket hat that folds down for easy packing. It also easily adjusts to fit almost everyone with a cinch drawstring lining on the inside.

It’s a hot travel accessory because not only does it keep you safe from the sun’s rays, it also keeps you cool and looking stylish. Plus, you can use it to spice up your vacation outfits, giving the already-worn looks a fresh feel.

Vermouth Beauty In The Nude Flight of Five Crayons

When traveling, I always bring these cleverly packaged Vermouth lip crayons, which are sustainably sourced and free of plastics and chemicals. Each "flight" features a color palette of five crayons in various hues, giving you multiple lipstick options without taking up precious toiletry bag space.

What's more, these long-lasting and hydrating crayons can be worn dabbed on your cheeks like blush or swiped across your eyelids in place of eyeshadow, further helping you cut down on beauty products and freeing up room for other trip essentials in your toiletry bag and carry-on.

Fjallraven Women's Kanken Hip Pack

I’m a huge fan of Fjallraven travel bags because of their timeless designs and practicality. Made with 100 percent vinylon fabric, this hip pack is durable and water-resistant, and is the only bag that you need to pack. It works whether you’re hitting the streets for a day of window shopping, the trails for hiking, or the strip for dinner. It’s just small enough that it also works as a wallet within a bigger bag or purse, if that's more your vibe (and you need the extra carry-on space). I like wearing it as a crossbody, though some fans wear it as a fanny pack.

Versatility aside, this bag really shines because of its roominess. One shopper wrote , "I was worried at first because it looks very small, but it has three compartments [and a] lot of room."

Everlane Day Ballet Flats

Everlane's Day Ballet Flats are easy to pack and don’t take up a lot of space. They can be worn with a casual outfit or dressed up for a nice dinner. Because of their adaptability, you’ll always find them on my packing list. While I own several pairs of the brand’s flats, these are my favorite because they’re chic and comfortable. I especially like the sweet little bow on top.

The soft, buttery leather molds to your feet, so they get more comfortable with wear. They’re great travel shoes because they’re stylish when paired with denim, leggings, dresses, pants, and even shorts. What's more, the outsoles are made of rubber, which keeps you from slipping on smooth or wet surfaces.

SeptCity Woven Rattan Wide-Stretch Straw Belt

It's time to give my favorite belt its flowers. A belt changes everything, and I love getting creative and refreshing an outfit with this trendy belt. It converts one outfit into another one, requiring you to pack less — a.k.a. why it's a must on my packing list. Its rattan fabric adds an elegant touch to my favorite outfits, and I love to wear it with skirts, dresses, over cardigans, and even tunics (one of my favorite looks is pairing it with this Trovata shift or PrettyGarden’s floral frock ).

It has a sturdy wooden buckle and measures 41.3 inches in length and 1.8 inches wide, but still offers you a little wiggle room with its stretchy design. The belt is also available in beige and cream, which are both neutral colors that work with most outfit palettes.

Acelitt Short-Sleeve V-Neck Button-Front Belted Jumpsuit

Similar to rompers, jumpsuits streamline the amount of clothes that you need to pack, offering you extra room so you don’t have to overpack and check your bags. This elegant version from Amazon-favorite brand Acelitt is ready for any situation; just add a sweater, blazer, or jacket on top to change it up. It’s comfortable, trendy, and super flattering, and the fabric is soft and stretchy so you can sport it on the plane, around town, and out to dinner without needing an outfit change.

One traveler wrote , "I love this jumpsuit so much that I have it in blue and black, [and I'm] ordering the olive green next. It's super easy to dress up or down [and] fits true to size. I always get compliments on it. It's great to travel with as well."

Mammut Runbold Light Pants

Mammut’s Runbold Light Pants are multi-functional for me. I wear them while running, hiking, and lounging, and they're lightweight and breathable material makes them perfect for spring’s transitional temperatures (you can even wear them well into the summer). The elastic waistband offers comfort for all activities, and you can convert to three-quarter-length pants to change up their look when your itinerary calls for it.

The two slit side pockets have zippers, which are ideal for hiking and traveling. They’re super easy to pack and water-repellent, so if the forecast warns of a slight drizzle, you’ll be okay.

Everlane’s Cotton Modern Trench Coat

A classic trench coat is a wardrobe staple, and I especially like to pack one for spring travel because it is well-suited for the variable weather. If you’re like me and have been fan-crushing on Jennifer Aniston’s wardrobe on "The Morning Show," then you’re going to fall for Everlane’s Cotton Trench Coat, which is half the price of other brand names and has a classic silhouette, with a belt to cinch at the waistline — and is fully-lined and water-resistant.

But, if $268 is too much for your travel wardrobe budget, I also spotted various, under-$100 versions at Amazon. Give the Farktop Double-Breasted Oversized Long Trench Coat (on sale for $80) or the Tanming Notch Lapel Double- Breasted Pea Coat-style Trench (which is on sale for $60) a look.

M.M. LaFleur Merritt Jardigan

M.M. LaFleur

The Merritt Jardigan is an investment that I’m glad I made. A cross between a tailored jacket and a cardigan, with a tie-front belt that accentuates your figure, it works wonders for elevating your ensemble, and can be worn from your desk to the airport to dinner. Wrinkle-resistant, stretchy, and long enough to cover your assets, I’ve worn it on the way to Pilates class, at the airport, and for numerous dinners. Plus, the fabric is season-less, which makes it great for any time of the year.

You can achieve the same elegant, quiet luxury wardrobe vibes with the Anrabess Open Front Cardigan Jacket , which is an Amazon-favorite outerwear piece that's just $50.

Feisedy Polarized Vintage Sunglasses Jackie O Cat-Eye Sunglasses

I stopped shelling out hundreds of dollars for brand-name glasses because they can easily get damaged or lost, especially when traveling. These elegant sunglasses give off a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” look at a compelling price, and they're incredibly versatile with their classic black, cat-eye silhouette that can be worn with any outfit for any occasion.

Not only are they light and comfortable, they’re polarized and offer 100 percent UV protection from the sun. The lenses are scratch-resistant, which enhance their durability. Singing the sunnies' praises, one shopper said , "They're better than my expensive, name-brand sunglasses. I can see better while traveling. I will take them with me on any of my trips without being afraid to lose them… not [a] scratch yet."
