For instance, I have loads of New York City travel content because I know that even though it’s not a travel destination to me, it is to other people. Plus, being a local allows me a unique perspective not every blogger can provide.

You might also think about “armchair travel” content; blog post ideas that have a travel theme but can be enjoyed without leaving home.

A few examples of this include roundups of short travel stories , cultural recipes, solo staycation ideas , and other travel at home posts that align with your mission.

These strategies are also great travel blog ideas for beginners, who may be looking to jumpstart their blog with content even if they’re not traveling.

How To Write A Catchy Blog Post Title

Now, here’s the thing when it comes to coming up with ideas for travel blog posts:

Even if you have an amazing article, if your title isn’t enticing, it likely won’t get read.

Basically, it looks at your headline to ensure that:

• It has a good mix of common, uncommon, emotional, and power words
• The first and last three words of the headline are engaging (as these are the words people tend to focus on most)

Now that you have a big list of travel content ideas , it’s time to dive deeper into how to actually write your blog post.

One very important part of your travel blog post is the introduction, as this will affect whether someone continues reading or clicks away.

To help you engage readers right away, I recommend utilizing the APP Method; also known as Agree – Promise – Preview.

This copywriting technique, which I learned about from Backlinko , revolves around the idea that your introduction should first agree with the reader to make it clear you understand them.

From there, you make a promise to them — such as a solution to a problem or a benefit of some kind.

Finally, you provide a preview by sharing exactly what they’ll get out of reading the blog post.

There are many smart ways to increase blog traffic , a few of which I’ll outline here.

I recommend incorporating these into a content checklist so that you always know exactly what needs to be done before hitting publish on a blog post.

Optimize your blog posts for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) .

In my opinion, the best way to grow your blog traffic is to optimize it to rank in search results.

Once it ranks, you can continue to enjoy steady traffic for the foreseeable future.

The site is founded by “Chief Idiot” — Tom Morgan. Apparently, most of the crazy ideas featured on the blog were his. 

Every page on the site reflects Morgan and his team’s wackiness and passion for great adventures. They do, host, and document daring outdoor activities on air, land, and sea — plus, a whole lot of charity.

Their audience can also participate in these activities, which can be held in various parts of the globe. The “Monkey Run,” for example, is an event where participants race through dirt trails on tiny bikes.

The bottom line is, it’s hard to come up with unique ideas that set you apart in the blogging landscape. The Adventurists, on the other hand, managed to do so multiple times.

A huge part of Jodi’s blog is about wellness and gluten-free eating. She then utilized her knowledge and experience to create detailed restaurant cards, which travelers can use when visiting certain countries.

41. Indiana Jo

I personally like the way Jeremy designed TravelFreak to provide the best possible user experience. Unlike a traditional layout, the site features a search bar so readers can jump right into the content they need.

43. The Everywhereist

Before anything else, yes — that’s Rand Fishkin in the photo above. 

And yes, the next travel blogger on this list is Rand’s longtime sweetheart and wife. 

Geraldine DeRuiter was a former copywriter and went with Rand in his travels, which are often business-related. She then turned to the habit of documenting their travel experiences, which she described as “love letters” to her husband. 

Today, Geraldine works full-time on  The Everywhereist   — named by Time magazine as one of the best blogs in 2011. 

The Everywhereist contains posts about food and Geraldine’s travel experiences along with a comprehensive Philadelphia travel guide. The guide contains information on where to go, eat, shop, and stay.

How To Come Up With Travel Blog Post Ideas?

Before we get into my list of posts, I wanted to share with you how I come up with blog post ideas. That way, you can continue thinking of awesome articles for your website. 

I always try to sit down and write out a ton of ideas for posts at once, so I can make a content calendar. Doing so allows me to work through articles without having to stop and think about what I’ll write. It saves so much time and energy!

But how do I come up with these ideas?

There are various ways. Firstly, you have to think about your nich e. Who is your perfect audience and what do they want to read? If you mainly write about solo female travel, you should focus on articles that solo female travellers will find useful or entertaining. If you focus on city breaks (like yours truly), it doesn’t make sense to write about the best waterfalls in a nature park.

Especially when you’re trying to become an authority on a destination or a type of travel, you should try to cover as many bases as possible and get super-specific. You can find tons of ideas by Googling certain topics and look at the “People also ask” section. 

Alternatively, you can look at Quora or ask your social media followers . Check the blogs of people in your niche, too. Never steal article ideas, but it can help you get inspired!

But whenever you’re planning your content calendar or your next travel blog post, you should always do keyword research . Not only can it give you a ton of additional blog post ideas, but it also helps you rank higher on search engines so you can grow your traffic!

I love writing destination travel posts because they are very specific. You know exactly what the reader is looking for, and it’s usually pretty easy to find some good keywords for them. Here are some ideas:

• Itineraries: You can create itineraries for specific destinations and show what you did on your trip. Best of all, you can make these type of travel blog posts for all types of destinations! Make a two-day itinerary for a city break, or a three-week itinerary for a specific country – let’s get creative!
• Where to eat in [city/destination]: Another destination idea is showing your favourite restaurants, bars, and cafes. This way, you can help readers pick the best places to eat on their own trip.
• What to eat in [destination]: Apart from sharing your favourite restaurants, you can also share what dishes are worth trying. Especially when travelling to new places, readers may not know what foods to try!
• What souvenirs to bring home from [destination] : We all love a good keepsake, don’t we? So why not share what types of souvenirs are perfect to bring home after visiting a country or city?
• Things to do in [city/country] : Instead of sharing a ready-made itinerary, you can also share a list of the best things to do in that country or city. That way, readers can put together their own itineraries with everything they’d like to see and do.

• Hidden gems in [destination]: Especially if you’re visiting a place for the second time, you may want to avoid the main sights. If you’re writing a lot of articles about a specific destination, it’s also a good idea to share some lesser-known spots that can add a lot of extra value to a trip.
• Best day trips from [destination]: When staying in a city for a few days, you may also want to take some day trips to explore the vicinity. You can write a blog post about the best options. Think about other cities, national parks, or great hikes.
• Best hikes in [destination]: Especially when writing about national parks or adventure travel, you can add some of the best hikes nearby. Which ones are worth your time, and which ones can better be avoided?

General Travel Blog Post Ideas

But not all posts have to be specifically about a country or a city – sometimes you just want to write about travel in general! And there is a lot to write about, including:

• The best travel apps: I can’t imagine travelling without my phone, and I bet that you can’t either. Share the best apps that can help your readers on their trips. Think of Google translate, maps, apps for train times, etc.

• How to travel more eco-friendly: Similar to zero-waste, there are a lot of ways to avoid harming the environment when travelling. Even though flying causes a lot of CO2, there are ways to donate to offset carbon footprint, for example.
• Travel quotes and inspiration: When you can’t travel, it can be tough to keep the wanderlust alive. You can create travel inspiration or quote posts to fuel the travel love.
• Best books about travelling or a specific destination: Create a list of the best books about travelling for your readers to enjoy. These can be fiction or non-fiction. You can even make it more specific and create a list of the best books about a specific destination (for example, I wrote about the best novels about Japan ).

• Where to go skiing this winter : You can share the best countries or ski resorts in a specific country. Alternatively, you can change this to other seasonal activities, like apple picking in Autumn.
• Best Christmas markets in Europe : With so many Christmas markets to choose from, your readers could use some guidance in picking the best ones. You can even invite other travel bloggers to submit their favourite ones.
• Places to see blossoms/fall foliage : These types of posts work very well for destinations that are known for their stunning scenery (like Japan). And since many people will be looking for the best spots during Spring or Autumn,

Austria is perfect for hiking in the summer, but it’s heaven for ski-lovers during the winter, for example. • Things you learned from travelling: Travelling is a privilege. It teaches you so much about the world and about yourself. You can write a blog post about all the things travelling has taught you. Maybe you can even add what places inspired you most.
• Mistakes you made while travelling: Nobody’s perfect and sharing your vulnerable side can help you connect with your audience. It’s always good to see that you’re not the only one making mistakes. Plus, sharing your travel mistakes can help others avoid them in the future.
• Best/worst/weirdest things you’ve eaten on your trips: Food and travelling go hand-in-hand. Different cultures and countries offer different dishes and snacks. It’s always fun to read about awesome or weird dishes from across the globe, so it may make for a good story for your blog.
• Travel guides about your hometown/place you live: The best travel tips always come from the people who know the city inside-out. So if you live in an exciting place, why not make the most out of it! By writing many articles about one place, you also create an authority on it – perfect for SEO!

Tips for Your Trip

While you’re traveling, here are some things you can do to make sure writing blog posts about your trip is an easy experience once you get home:

• Come up with blog post ideas beforehand so you know exactly what kind of content you need to gather while you’re actually traveling 
• Take photos of EVERYTHING (you never know when a photo will be useful for a blog post)
• Document your trip thoroughly, whether you write in a travel journal each day or just jot down helpful notes on your phone as you go

The more prepared you are, the easier it will be to write blog posts when you get home!

1. Itinerary

The first blog post you can write about your trip is an itinerary guide!

Whether it’s a short weekend guide or a full one-week itinerary to your destination, write about what to do, where to stay, etc. in order to have the perfect trip.

You can actually get even more blog posts out of this one if you write itineraries of different lengths… or you can combine several itinerary ideas all into one blog post.

But how do you write and publish posts that will be successful?

How Is Travel Blogging Different From Other Niches?

Before we get into the basics of how to write a travel blog post, let’s look at what makes them different.

The truth is this not every blog niche is the same.

Here’s how they can be different.

Travel blogs tend to be informational and persuasive.

In comparison, a DIY craft blog is almost 100% informational with “how to” posts.

With a persuasive blog niche, your content will require something different: storytelling!

Your content will need to be compelling and we’ll look at this in just a second.

But before we go there, also remember that within the travel blog niche, there are micro-niches.

So a travel gear review site may have fewer personal stories in comparison to those that include actual travel.

But what should you be doing differently writing a travel blog?

If you plan to monetize your travel blog , you’ll need to start growing an audience that loves reading what you’re sharing.

Let’s look at each section of a blog post and what you should include in each.

Let’s learn how to write a travel blog post that grabs the reader’s attention immediately.

But first, the headline title needs to be engaging.

Begin by using descriptive, powerful words that catch the reader’s interest.

For example instead of “My London Day Trip” use something like “How To Plan The Ultimate Day Trip To London: 24 Hours Of Fun And Good Food”

Now that you have the headline completed, it’s time to look at the introduction section.

As usual, I always recommend using your SEO longtail keyword in the first paragraph. Get that out of the way!

Here are a few ways you can make your travel blog post introduction interesting :

• Introduce your destination or topic with a brief overview
• Add context and background information as to what they can expect (romance them with a hook)
• Share a personal anecdote or story that will want the reader to learn more
• Ask a thought-provoking question on the topic

2. How To Write The Body Of Your Travel Blog Post

The next section of your blog post covers the key tips that you’re sharing, as well as the stories and anecdotes that bring them to life.

• Places you visited: detailed descriptions, their significance and your personal experience.

When you’re learning how to write a travel blog post, the last thing you should obsess about is the post length.

I’ll tell you a little secret: sometimes a post can be inspiring at 700 words.

In other cases, you’re inevitably going to write something longer.

Top bloggers are making their travel blog posts approximately 2000 words. This is easy to do. 

Consider all of the tips,  and recommendations you can provide in a standard “guide to [Destination]” type of blog post? 

If your post is photo-heavy, do try to balance it with text that tells the story more fully than just the images. 

How To Come Up With Interesting Travel Blog Post Ideas

Coming up with fresh ideas can sometimes be hard.

We all come up against “writer’s block” as bloggers at some point.

Moreover, I want to make the most of every single day to experience a nice sunset spot – I don’t mind repeating but I don’t want to waste the golden sunset hour in my room or stuck somewhere indoors.

How to Make Money Travel Blogging: 10 Ways I Monetized My Passion

Today, many folks dream of hitting the road and traveling the world while working remotely on their own business, as their own boss. It’s a path that has been heavily romanticized, and for good reason. To live life on your terms, choosing where you live and work from, is a truly liberating experience. But to get to this promised land is a challenge, and most folks who try to build an online business are ultimately not successful.

I'm the founder of The Broke Backpacker , one of the world’s largest travel blogs, and I'm a serial entrepreneur with over a dozen different online ventures under my belt. I started my own journey fifteen years ago while backpacking the world on a budget of just $10 a day, and since then I have learned a TON about what does and what doesn’t work when trying to build an online income.

How I became a travel blogger

Embarking on my own journey as a broke backpacker, I was hungry for both adventure and great stories. I found I had a passion for writing in-depth reports of what it was truly like to be living in a tent, hitchhiking, couch surfing, and basically living like a hippy around the world. I was passionate about the potential for personal development through challenging travel that threw me out of my comfort zone and I used this passion to build up my travel blog and to launch some other projects along the way.

Simply being on the road as a young and naive teenager without two cents to rub together presented me with numerous challenges. I took a good number of risks and made pivotal decisions that transformed this passion project of mine into a sustainable source of income. From refining my niche to leveraging productivity systems, each decision was a stepping stone toward building a sustainable and successful business.

I am sharing some of the key decisions that propelled my humble travel blog for budget backpackers into a profitable business with an audience of over 1 million users a month. So, fasten your seatbelts and join me as we explore the pivotal moments that transformed my budget travel blog into one of the internet’s best-known travel sites.

10 strategies I used to build my travel blog into a business

1. investing in a catchy domain name.

It may sound simple, but let's be honest—picking the right brand name is a pivotal decision for any business. The Broke Backpacker is a memorable name that immediately tells the audience what the site is about. It also has a personal element to it.

This not only helped me establish a strong brand identity but also attracted the right audience from the get-go: people who wanted to go backpacking, but were pretty broke.

Back in the day, 10 years ago when I first started this blog, there was hardly any content online about traveling on an extreme budget. Indeed, most travel blogs talked about traveling on a budget of $50 a day (so $1500 a month) after flights. This was way more money than I ever had access to and I’m glad, as it pushed me down a different path. Ultimately, I saw a sizable gap in the market.

By aligning my domain name with my niche, I positioned myself early on as a trusted resource in the budget travel space, drawing in readers who resonated with my content and message.

2. Embarking on crazy adventures

One of the game-changing decisions I made was to embark on extraordinary adventures that captured the attention of both readers and the media.

I explored and covered off-the-beaten-path destinations like Venezuela when not many were doing it—especially with the same level of detailed, raw coverage that I brought to the game. Some of my photos in Venezuela went viral and this was a crucial moment for me.

By undertaking epic journeys like embarking on an attempt to travel from the UK to Papua New Guinea overland, I managed to attract the attention of powerful media like the BBC and The Daily Mail , scoring the first powerful backlinks that helped ramp up The Broke Backpacker’ s value in Google’s eyes and helped me build some more monthly traffic.

I also documented my adventures on Snapchat, taking my audience with me as I hitchhiked across Iran, hiked deep into the Pakistani Himalayas, and drove a rickshaw all around India. I was raw and real in my videos, often enjoying a cheeky smoke on camera and always trying to tell it how it is.

The exposure and credibility gained through these adventures propelled my blog's visibility and opened doors to new opportunities.

3. Launching expeditions to Pakistan

In 2015, I visited Pakistan for the first time. I was broke (big time) and I covered everything on my Snapchat. I was the first blogger to do this, and the first in Pakistan for a LONG time. My audience was stoked to see this misunderstood part of the world.

I went back there a second time in 2016. I turned to my audience on Snapchat and asked if folks would be interested in seeing this amazing country with me as their guide.

I put up a PayPal link to secure deposits and overnight it sold out. I suddenly had $6000 (12 x $500 deposits) in the bank, which I immediately spent on trying to grow The Broke Backpacker, reasoning that I had six months before I led the first tour and therefore time to make it back.

It was a pretty big risk but…I made it work.

4. Being authentic

Authenticity pays off, and it has been a cornerstone of my success.

I made the conscious decision to openly talk about topics that are often considered taboo, such as drug use and things that real people do in the real world. I felt like travel blogs often hid such things, and I made an effort to always be transparent.

By sharing authentic stories and vulnerabilities, I created a deeper connection with my audience. People related to the raw and unfiltered nature of my content, and this genuine approach built up a lot of trust and loyalty among my readership.

Being authentic and true to my personality allowed me to build a strong community of people who appreciated my transparency and valued the realness I brought to the table.

5. Going ALL in

I think perhaps what separates successful entrepreneurs from those who dream of working for themselves but struggle to make it work is their refusal to give up and their ability to fully commit to a project.

I spent two years in Chiang Mai working 60 to 70 hours a week. During that time, I had to put my travel goals and dreams on hold and focus solely on working tirelessly. It's ironic that in order to be successful in running a travel blog, I had to temporarily step away from the road and dedicate more time to writing posts, designing strategies, organizing standard operating procedures (SOPs), cultivating relationships, and hiring writers. There was so much involved in that stage, and I made numerous sacrifices.

I vividly remember feeling incredibly anxious and worried, often struggling financially to the point where I couldn't afford to eat or do much else. I had traded the freedom, joy, and personal development of being on the road for a desk, where I became my own boss and worked relentlessly. I faced significant internal struggles with self-belief and self-talk, constantly questioning whether all the hard work would pay off.

Throughout it all, I managed to hold on to the belief that it had to work because I had reached a point where I had no other options. I had borrowed money that I could only repay if I succeeded. The pressure on me was immense, but ultimately, it galvanized me to do whatever was necessary to achieve my goals.

6. Building an awesome team and knowing when to outsource

The Broke Backpacker is huge. It has about one million monthly visitors and 3,000 unique posts. Building a team to help me organize and think of projects and bounce ideas around has been crucial to my success.

Every cent I earned along the way, I invested in hiring and expanding my team. Now, I am proud to have an incredible team of broke backpacker adventurer folks—and let me tell you, they do a stellar job at keeping the show running.

Knowing when to outsource tasks allowed me to focus on my strengths and allocate resources effectively. By assembling a team of expert vagabonds, I enhanced the quality of my content, expanded my reach, and freed up valuable time to explore new opportunities.

With them, I’ve managed to build systems that work, develop a ton of standard operating procedures for new hires and projects, and all of that combined has been the foundational force behind the scalability and success of my blog.

Recognize the power of collaboration and the value of expertise. Hire good people, focus on honesty, work ethic, and creative flair over experience. Trust your gut, not everybody can be trusted.

7. Leveraging the power of existing traffic

Over the years, I realized my blog was bringing in considerable traffic to our affiliate partners in the gear space, so I decided to capitalize on that.

I ventured into the world of dropshipping and started designing my own lines of backpacker essentials like hammocks and quick-dry towels under the brand name Active Roots.

This strategic move not only allowed me to diversify my revenue streams but also solidified my brand presence in the travel industry. It was successful for a while until Covid started and made it impossible to sustain, as shipping costs increased by 400%. Sadly, I had to throw in the towel on that business.

But now that the storm has passed, I’m already working on an upgraded version of that business that is aligned with the evolving demands of my audience, including a new line of Broke Backpacker Basics.

8. Going physical

The online world can be very fun, and I’ve dabbled in a lot of interesting business models and creative ways of building an income. Driven by my passion for online entrepreneurship, I recently ventured into creating a physical business that catered to my audience’s evolving needs.

I am passionate about the power of online entrepreneurship to change lives and raise people out of poverty. For a long time, I had dreamed of opening a business that would act as a beacon, a hub, and a muster point for aspiring entrepreneurs and digital nomads to find their tribe, as well as sleep, eat, work, and play.

In 2022, after a few challenging years, we finally managed to open Tribal, Bali’s first custom-built co-working hostel. I’m thrilled to say that we’ve been getting great feedback, and we’re usually full.

This project allowed me to merge my love for travel, community building, and entrepreneurship. Tribal Bali became a hub for like-minded individuals, fostering collaboration and connection among digital nomads, as well as overall just being a kickass place for my nomad folks to get some work done.

9. Being disciplined

Being disciplined is a crucial skill for entrepreneurs and digital nomads to develop. Personally, I found that cultivating discipline was essential in building and managing a successful travel blog.

To achieve this, I focused on staying organized using tools like Google Calendar and Trello. I set clear goals for myself and identified the habits I needed to cultivate in order to reach those goals. I have whiteboards placed throughout my house, displaying various goals, affirmations, and reminders to keep me on track. Each evening, I review my habits and tick off the ones I successfully accomplished during the day.

I also employ a two-phone system to avoid getting too engrossed in my phone and ensure a proper winding down before sleep. The second phone is dedicated to music, audiobooks, and podcasts, devoid of any social media or communication apps. Ultimately, the key is to minimize distractions, maintain focus, and establish goals for each part of the day. I've spent the past 10 years cultivating these practices.

I've also developed a strategy to ensure that every aspect of my blog receives the attention it deserves. I break down all the necessary tasks over a three-month period and chip away at them on a weekly basis, even the ones I may not particularly enjoy. Honesty and self-awareness are important in recognizing both successes and failures.

It can be tempting to spend time on your online businesses’ social media, or endlessly designing a logo, but at the end of the day, there are essential tasks that only you can accomplish—the "big business domino" that needs to be toppled every day.

Cultivating discipline enables you to get things done, especially when faced with challenges. It helps you focus and avoid unnecessary distractions. This skill is paramount for any aspiring entrepreneur.

10. Being patient

During Covid, the site's monthly user count plummeted from 1.5 million to a mere 200,000. Travel-related search traffic took a massive hit as well. Even when looking at it from a percentage standpoint, the revenue generated from the remaining traffic wasn't as expected. While some people continued to search for travel-related terms, bookings for hostels and purchases of gear were virtually non-existent.

The entire world was in a state of anxiety and uncertainty.

In such circumstances, there was no choice but to double down and fully commit. We utilized that time to rebuild the site, making it faster, leaner, sexier, and smoother. Previously, it had become a Frankenstein-like creation, initially designed by me and later worked on by various developers who never communicated with each other.

Over a six-month period, we rebuilt it from the ground up. We also expanded our team of writers, focused on revamping different content series, and updated older posts. Fortunately, our efforts paid off, but it was undeniably a nerve-wracking experience to double down when everything seemed to be falling apart.

I firmly believe that if you aspire to succeed and create something remarkable, you have to go ALL in.

Display ads are a good way to start generating income, though they might deter some readers. My suggestion is to start by joining affiliate programs for brands you love and find ways to plug them as hard (and as softly) as you can.

Starting a travel blog can be an extremely rewarding career, though you really have to be passionate, patient, and persistent. With the right mindset, ahead of you await plenty of travel, income, and creative expression opportunities.

Genesah Duffy: Finding Freedom in the Skies  

Genesah earned her commercial pilot certificate in 2014 and has been with Frontier for almost two years. Based out of TPA, she cherishes the breathtaking views that flying offers, whether cruising at 37,000 feet or soaring above the clouds in a small plane. After leaving the military, Genesah sought something beyond the ordinary 9-5 life and found her calling in aviation. A discovery flight at her local airport sealed the deal, and she hasn't looked back since. Genesah's advice to future pilots? Believe in yourself. Despite the challenges you may face, stay positive, ask for help when needed, and take ownership of your mistakes.  With determination and perseverance, you can turn your dreams of flying into reality.

What to know for booking summer travel: Expert tips on airfare, destinations and more

Where to score flight deals during the prime summer travel season.

As the surge of summer travel draws near, the race to book a great vacation is on.

"If you're looking to travel domestically within the U.S., I think you should be booking now for summer travel," Clint Henderson, travel expert and managing editor of The Points Guy, told "GMA."

Earlier this month while reporting quarterly earnings, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian projected "record advance bookings for the summer," telling CNBC that the carrier's credit card data and bookings show customers are highly interested in air travel.

An increase in budget airline routes that has created more competition, paired with an easing of the post-pandemic revenge travel surge, means travelers could see more deals.

"Overall prices are down from where they were when we just had that boom out of the pandemic," Henderson said. "So things are more reasonable."

Hopper, the flight booking app, has shown predicted fares for flights to Europe will be down 10% in price from the same time last year.

Google recently announced its top 20 trending summer destinations , which saw a few newcomers on the list and Paris rose to the No. 2 spot.

With the Olympics taking place there from July 26 through Aug. 11, an uptick in airfare and hotel pricing is expected during the Games.

But those willing to wait out the Olympics could find big savings for flights to the host nation.

The Points Guy has featured deals from Atlanta, Dallas and Charlotte to Paris for as low as $515 from August through the fall.

Amsterdam, Prague, Spain and Iceland are among the most reasonably priced European destinations, as seen on Hopper.

Tips for booking summer travel

Don't forget to stay flexible with travel dates and keep midweek in mind for possibly lower fares.

There's also a time during the post-summer rush known as "shoulder season," between September and October, when fares could drop by as much as 30%.

When it comes to airfare purchase timing, the experts at The Points Guy have found prices dip eight to four weeks before the outbound flight, but after the one-month mark, prices will creep back up.

Places to Work Outdoors

The beautiful 12 acres of lakeside park in downtown Madison is a perfect place to stretch out and get some work done. It's just a nine-minute walk to from the Wisconsin State Capitol meaning there's quick access to anything you need downtown. And if you find yourself working until sunset, you will have one of the best views in the city of the sun setting over Lake Mendota.

Willy Street Park

This small community park in the eclectic Willy Street neighborhood is a perfect little hideaway to spend your day. The park consists of several picnic tables surrounded by trees that provide lots of shade (great for laptop readability) and native plant life. When you want to stretch your legs or take a break for lunch, you're within walking distance of several restaurants and the locally-loved Willy Street Co-op .

The Biergarten at Olbrich Park

Plenty of picnic tables, a lakeside view and beer. What more could you ask for from your office on the go? Olbrich Park on Madison's east side is a sprawling urban park on the shores of Lake Monona. And during the warm-weather months (generally from late April through October) the park offers a biergarten with rotating local brews on tap and a variety of snacks. You can work at the biergarten tables during the day and stick around to enjoy a brew when the 'garten opens in the late afternoon. 

Coffee Shops, Patios and Cafes

Working the day away at a coffee shop is a classic for a reason: great seating, abundant Wi-fi, yummy treats and a front-row seat to the people that make a community special. Madison is known for having an excellent lineup of cafes and coffee shops . And when patio season starts, Madisonians flock to their favorite patios and outdoor dining spaces during and after work.

Among many fantastic local coffee shops, a few stand out for their one-of-a-kind locations and offerings:

Black Locust Cafe

Black Locust Cafe is in Madison's up-and-coming Capitol East neighborhood that's also home to Vintage Brewing , The Sylvee and Breese Stevens Field . The cafe is a part of Robinia Courtyard , a shared dining space home to Black Locust, Jardin and MadisonTap . The courtyard is nestled between two great places to stay: the brand-new Moxy Hotel and Hotel Indigo , making it among the most conveniently located coffee shops for travelers. Their full food and drink menu makes it easy to hunker down and stay the whole work day.

Leopold's Books Bar Caffe

Leopold's is every book lover's dream spot. This ultra-cozy cafe is home to a coffee shop, bar and bookstore all in one and the vintage aesthetic is unmatched. If you visit during the times when Leopold's and the adjacent Fabiola's Spaghetti House and Deli overlap, you'll have a lineup of great food and drink options to fuel your work day.

Northstreet Collective

Coffee. Baked goods. Beer. The three main food groups. And all available at Northstreet Collective, home to Cafe Domestique, Young Blood Brewing and Bloom Bake Shop. The mid-century modern inspired decor and indoor-outdoor hybrid space is a relaxing environment with plenty of room to work and enjoy three different small businesses in one.

Hodge Podge

While the name suggests the idea of mismatch and jumble, that's not what you'll find here. Hodge Podge is a coffee, cocktail and mocktail bar in Verona that specializes in sustainability. Eco-friendly decisions are seen throughout the cafe from the lineup of thrifted glassware, herbs grown in the cafe's indoor hydro-garden and eco-friendly bathroom supplies. 

Built for Bleisure

Some of Madison's coolest venues for remote work don't quite fit in a category. Each provide a quintessentially-Madison experience that allow you to get your work done while also feeling like you're connecting with the city.

Madison-based American Family Insurance , one of the city's largest employers, operates a one-of-a-kind space that's a great hub for bleisure travelers traveling solo or with a group.  Dreambank  is a community gathering hub where big dreams and ideas can be fostered through education, events, art installations and other programming. The space is open to anyone to work or host meetings. 

Garver Feed Mill

Garver Feed Mill is one of Madison's premiere event venues and a local business hub that's open during weekdays as a space for anyone to work, dine or gather. Inside the renovated, historic sugar beet factory and feed mill is Ian's Pizza , Calliope Ice Cream , Kosa Spa , NessAlla Kombucha and other local businesses. Once you get to Garver, there are few reasons to leave until your work day is over.

Memorial Union Terrace

You can work and get your best travel pics taken care of all in one spot. The Memorial Union Terrace, home of the iconic sunburst chairs, is a beloved Madison locale. Located on the UW Campus but open to everyone from April through October, the Terrace is a lakeside gathering place where you can work, meet up with friends, enjoy food and take in the views of Lake Mendota. Once the day is done, stick around for live music and other events happening throughout the week.

Brix Coworking

You'll have few worries getting down to business in this space built for remote work. Brix Coworking offers meeting rooms and event spaces that are great for small groups or teams traveling together or in need of an offsite work space.

Celebrate Arbor Day! Five Unique Trees to Discover at The Pine Hollow Arboretum

Celebrate Arbor Day! In honor of this national day of tree preservation and appreciation observed on April 26, we’ve collaborated with the Pine Hollow Arboretum  (PHA) located in Slingerlands. The Pine Hollow Arboretum is a true nature gem in Albany’s backyard, showcasing trees, shrubs, and other woody plants from around the world. The living tree museum has an awe-inspiring assortment of distinct trees, scroll through this blog to learn about five unique, fan-favorites selected by PHA's Executive Director, Gabrielle Sant'Angelo.

Photos provided by the Pine Hollow Arboretum. Join the Pine Hollow Arboretum for their Arbor Day celebration Propagation 101 with Christian Grigoraskos  this Saturday, April 27 at 10 AM! 

1. Dawn Redwood Tree

In the late 90's and early 2000's when the Pine Hollow Arboretum was first established, no tree quite caught the eye of PHA's founder like the dawn redwood tree. This founder's favorite tree remains a fan favorite of visitors to the arboretum today. With roots in the arboretum dating back decades before PHA even existed, this original tree was planted in 1968  and has a lifespan extending 400 to 500 years. Native to China, seeds of the dawn redwood were first introduced to the US in 1946. In the fall, its needles turn to a beautiful shade of red. The fluting of the trunk and roots, which stabilize the tree as it grows, help it stand out as the centerpiece of the Metasequoia Field. 

2. Paw Paw Tree

Though you may not find them in the grocery store, and you may not have heard of them until now, the paw paw fruit that grows from the paw paw tree has been a part of this area's history for centuries. Native to North America, the fruit is used as a cooking ingredient and for eating raw. Reaching peak ripeness in September or October, the fruit is said to taste like a banana with hints of mango or pineapple. The paw paw is also the largest fruit native to North America with some pieces weighing up to 16 ounces. Visit the Pine Hollow Arboretum to view the cluster of paw paws, a tree species that bears centuries of the area's history, today.

Note: viewing the paw paw fruit when ripe is very cool to see but picking the paw paw fruit is off-limits! 

3. Weeping Alaskan Cedar Tree

This beautiful evergreen tree with boughs that droop down in a weeping form is native to the Pacific Northwest Coast. For centuries it has been used as a timber and wood source for indigenous peoples of that area. The weeping Alaskan cedar has been used for everything from homes and canoes to smaller utensils and thread for clothing and blankets. It's known botanically as the Callitropsis nootkatensis derived from the Nuu-chah-nulth people indigenous to Vancouver Island in British Columbia. 

4. Bald Cypress Tree 

A tree shrouded in mystery; the bald cypress is known for its unusual above ground roots called "knees." Though trees of this species have stood for thousands of years around the country, the purpose of its "knees" remains unknown. The tree continues to bewilder as one of very few trees both coniferous and deciduous.  Native to the Southeastern United States, the bald cypress grows in wet, swampy areas and can live for a thousand years. It's a standout visual in the arboretum's All Purpose Swamp. 

5. Green Ash Tree

Standing tall in the Magnolia Field, the green ash tree is currently an endangered species. Once a hardy street tree, the green ash is mainly threatened by an invasive beetle from Asia known as the Emerald Ash Borer. Part of the Pine Hollow Arboretum's work includes education about at-risk trees such as the green ash and ways to help protect these species.
