Recommendations & Reviews

The best! Mabry was a knowledgeable enthusiastic guide and answered so many questions in three hours. We had a choice of guided hikes. We wanted to learn as much as possible about Bryce before doing our own hikes, and he gave us a constant narrative while hiking Devils Loop and also giving a botany lesson at Inspiration Point.

Incredible!!! We went on the private tour with Oscar. He picked us up at our campsite is a very nice van. He was a bucket full of knowledge. (They also have group tours). He designed our tour around our guest’s limited mobility and took us to 4 beautiful destination that were accessible for all of us. We got such a great overview of how the “hoodoos” are formed, trees and vegetation as well as some folklore. I highly recommend Oscar and Bryce Canyon Scenic Tours. They are a local company and Oscar is the owner!!! 5 out of 5

Do not hesitate to book a tour with Jeff. We had a blast and you will find Jeff knowledgeable about history and geology! The views you will experience are breathtaking. We had so much fun if you’re looking for a guide look no further!

Jeff was Amazing!!! If you are looking for a Great Adventure this is the company to book! Jeff made it possible for us to see some of Utah’s most beautiful country with our parents! He was incredibly accommodating and gracious. He customized our trip to our interests, abilities and available time. We saw the most Incredible and Unique Country and had a Awesome time doing it! Everything was top of line from UTV to Safety Equipment. Best tour we have been on and we can’t recommend them enough!

Jeff is a gracious and fun host. He is knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. He has an expansive understanding of the region, and was kind in sharing hiking suggestions for after we left Kanab and headed north on our getaway. You’ll have a wonderful experience with Jeff.

Jeff is a wonderful host and very competent. He knows the area very well and is a great driver, as the roads in are rough and very sandy. I was very lucky to have him as a guide. He went out of his way to make our tour personal and enjoyable. I won’t sign on with any other tour.

I’m a native of southern Utah and have tried for years to draw on the Wave hike lottery, but with no luck. A group of us decided we would try one more time, but struck out again. We had the good fortune of crossing paths with Jeff as we were getting ready to leave the BLM office. He gave us a few suggestions for great day trips and we quickly decided to have him take us to White Pocket. Wow, just wow! I wish I had known about the area earlier, would not have wasted time trying for the Wave. We got all kinds of cool insight throughout the day and Jeff pointed us to the little things I think most people would miss, like petroglyphs and native hide-aways.

At Buckskin Gulch he guided us through the slotcanyon, telling lots of interesting and fun facts. He took all the time we needed. We sat down for a nice picknick an wandered through the canyon. We thougth this was it, being very satisfied so far, but on our way back he even took us to see a wonderfull spot at Staircase Escalante. We could never have made it with our RV. Jeff is a great host, friendly, fun and kind. We certainly recommend his tours.

This time we were lucky and won in the “Lottery” in Kanab the permit for “The Wave”! As we did some wonderful tours to the White Pocket and Coyote  Buttes   South with Jeff Welker last September we wanted to go with him again.

America’s Best Small Desert Town Is Set Between Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon National Parks

You might not have heard of Kanab, Utah, but if you want to visit beautiful national parks in Utah and Arizona, this desert town is the place to be.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

The Best Times to Visit

Things to do, where to stay, where to eat and drink, where to shop, how to get there.

Courtesy of Kane County Office of Tourism

The tiny town of Kanab, Utah, is perfectly perched within reach of the most iconic sites in the southwest. Three popular national parks — Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon — are one to two hours away by car, and Kanab acts as the gateway to The Wave , a popular red rock formation that resembles a wave in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness.

"Kanab is coined 'the Golden Circle,' centrally located between Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and Lake Powell. plus so many other amazing parks and national monuments," said Britt Roth, owner of the local Dark Sky RV Campground . "Southern Utah and specifically Kanab are known for slot canyons, a unique naturally occurring formation formed by wind and water over time."

And while Kanab serves as the perfect homebase for exploring these famous sites (and more), it's still relatively unheard of — in fact, its motto is " Magically Unspoiled ." The tiny town of roughly 5,000 people includes athletes and outdoor lovers who can’t get enough of the adventures that await just outside their door. Here’s why they’ve chosen to call Kanab home, and what you, as a visitor, won’t want to miss during your stay.

If you have your heart set on seeing The Wave, your best bet is to visit between December and February when the demand for permits drops slightly. During the most popular months to visit The Wave — typically April, May, September, and October — there's often around 300 people vying for the 16 daily permits.

The Wave aside, Kanab shines in the spring and fall when the weather is cool and temperate.

“My favorite season in Kanab is definitely fall. You get both the great temperatures and sunny days and also the brilliant fall colors of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. Zion area along with the wonderful mix of Quaking Aspen and Ponderosa trees near the North Rim Grand Canyon and fantastic photo opportunities,” said Kyle Walker, owner of Grand Circle Tours in Kanab. Meanwhile, Roth, votes for spring. She says, "Kanab is located in the high desert so the flora and fauna is unique and the area is much greener than you would expect and you’ll see flowers and colors you’ve just never seen before!"

If you wish to visit Kanab’s neighboring national parks, make sure to research what’s open during your travel window. All three parks are open year-round, but the trails may be limited in the winter and the north entrance to the Grand Canyon (which is the most accessible entrance from Kanab) is typically closed between early December and mid-May .

Kanab is a short drive from not one, but three national parks. The closest is Utah’s Zion National Park , which is just about an hour northwest of the city. The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah are both around an hour and a half from Kanab, making for an easy day trip.

Ashley Heaton, the general manager at Wild Thyme Cafe , a local restaurant, says of the three parks, she prefers Bryce Canyon. “My favorite park to visit would have to be Bryce Canyon. It has a little bit of everything, from breathtaking views to amazing hikes.”

Those who want to stick closer to Kanab can check out the human-made Sand Caves , a mere five-minute drive out of town, or the Belly of the Dragon , a visually stunning tunnel that’s 20 minutes north of Kanab. Walker also recommends the “Peekaboo [ Peek-A-Boo ] slot canyon and driving the roads of the Grand Staircase.” His lesser-known recommendations include a visit to East Zion, which he says is “Higher in elevation and therefore more water and greener walks that very few seem to know about. Anywhere you find a place to park on the road has a secret hiking place just waiting to be explored.”

And of course, visitors should also put in for a permit to see The Wave , which is about an hour east of Kanab. The popular site is limited to just 64 people per day (48 permits are given three months in advance, and 16 are given one day in advance). And those who nab a permit to witness the formation, which resembles a wave carved into red sandstone, will need to come prepared to complete the six-mile round-trip hike. If you’re unfamiliar with desert hiking, it’s well-worth going with a guide — we recommend Walker’s team at Grand Circle Tours . Permit holders can also see attractions like The Second Wave, Melody Arch, and Fatali's Boneyard.

If you missed out on a permit, head to White Pocket, a similar but less popular site that also sits within the stunning Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness.

Courtesy of BaseCamp 37°

There aren’t any five-star hotels in Kanab (which is part of its charm), but there are a smattering of luxury vacation rentals — like this home with a private pool and spa. The real way to go is to keep that outdoor vibe alive into the night by staying in one of the many local campgrounds and glamping sites.

The Dark Sky RV Campground was rated the top campsite in the U.S. for 2023 by Campspot and is the ultimate basecamp for travelers with RVs and vans. (Plus, they have perks like outdoor showers, a dog park, and a zip line.) The fully outfitted safari tents at BaseCamp 37° , which is eight miles east of Kanab, is a good choice for those who prefer to sleep in a tent. Each glamping tent has a California king bed and a private deck with desert views. There’s also a communal kitchen, plenty of outdoor seating, and hammocks primed for stargazing .

If you’re traveling with a furry friend, there’s no better place to lay your head than Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile , a pet-centric property with free shuttles to Kanab’s famous pet sanctuary, which just so happens to be the largest animal sanctuary in the U.S. Roth says, "people come from all over the world to volunteer and visit" the animal sanctuary, noting that "they house over 1,600 animals at any one time."

For freshly baked goods and a cozy vibe, head to Kanab Creek Bakery , which doles out coffee and croissants along with full breakfast options in the heart of downtown.

For a stellar lunch, head to the OG of Kanab dining: Rocking V Cafe . The restaurant boasts made-from-scratch home cooking and enough art and cool decor to keep you entertained the duration of your meal. If you’re craving a more elevated meal, the menu at Wild Thyme Cafe is hard to top. Their garden-to-table menu has a little something to everyone — from ribs so tender the meat falls off the bone to sesame tofu bowls (Roth says these are her favorite). Heaton, the cafe's general manager, says you can’t miss the key lime pie, which relies on a recipe passed down from her grandfather.

And finally, Walker recommends Vermillion 45 and Sego . “Sego has a wonderful pork belly watermelon treat and my other go-to dish is the dan dan lo mein, and I can't leave without a prickly pear margarita. At Vermillion 45 I enjoy the rigatoni pasta alla norcina and get a nice red Italian wine to go with that. Can’t go wrong at either place.”

The mercantile at the Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile is a great way to support the nation’s largest animal sanctuary and offers a great selection of branded items, pet accessories, and interesting gifts. For a fine selection of art (and a similarly pet-friendly vibe) head to Raven’s Heart Gallery , which was opened by one of the animal sanctuary’s co-founders. Inside, you’ll find a wonderfully curated selection of local painting, sculpture, and jewelry.

And finally, for locally inspired gifts and any outdoor gear you left behind, swing by Willow Canyon Outdoor , which has a great selection of books and maps, in addition to clothing and shoe brands like Osprey, Black Diamond, and Chaco. It’s the place to go if you need to gear up before a big hike.

The best way to reach Kanab is by flying into the neighboring city of St. George, home to the St. George Regional Airport (SGU). From this airport, it’s around an hour and a half by car to Kanab.

Those who want more flight options should consider flying into Las Vegas (LAS), which is three hours from Kanab, or Salt Lake City (SLC), which is five hours away by car. Similarly, you can fly into Phoenix (PHX) and make the 5.5-hour drive to Kanab.

If you plan on exploring the nearby national parks and rock formations, make sure to rent a car.

Daily Breakdown:

  • 1 Day - Visit Bryce Canyon National Park

You will be greeted at your hotel by your tour guide around 6:00 am to begin your adventure to Bryce Canyon . As you travel your guide will tell you stories and histories of the area, a history of the park, and of those who first settled the area. They will also begin to explain the unique geology that created the Colorado Plateau and Bryce Canyon.

As you near Bryce Canyon, you are first introduced to the unique rock formations, known as hoodoos, as you travel through Red Canyon. This area is a great introduction to the magnificent and mystical geological formations that are scattered around the region. Enter Bryce Canyon and stop at Fairyland, Sunrise, Sunset, and if possible Bryce Point. Each point enables you to experience and witness the unique forces of erosion that carved this beautiful landscape. If time allows, you will also drive out to Natural Bridge viewpoint. You will have an opportunity to walk along the rim between Sunrise and Sunset Points and possibly down the Navajo or Queen Garden Loops. Weather permitting, you will enjoy a picnic lunch at the rim, overlooking the canyon. If not, you will have lunch at one of the many cafes in the area.

Once finished with lunch and exploring the canyon, you will depart Bryce Canyon and begin the return journey back to your hotel. Usually, you will travel across Cedar Mountain on Scenic Byway 14. This offers us the opportunity to see high alpine meadows, overlook Zion Canyon and Deep Creek, and glimpse Cedar Breaks National Monument. The tour will commence around 6:30pm.

Bryce Canyon National Park

This forest-like landscape of Bryce with extreme rock formations is best described as being - well, simply "hoodoo-iferous."

Highway 63 Bryce Canyon National Park Bryce, UT 84764

(435) 834-5322

No Place on Earth Looks Like Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon, only an hour and a half from Kanab, offers an amazing world of rock sculpted into spectacular ten-story sized sedimentary pillars. 50 million years in the making, this series of ampitheaters has been sculpted into bizarre shapes, slot canyons, windows, fins and surprising colorful spires called, “hoodoos.” The surreal formations make up a “fairyland” of mystical castles, temples and elegant structures of stone. You can enjoy the canyon on a 37-mile scenic drive or explore the wonders of Bryce on foot from numerous trails.

Visiting nearby Bryce Canyon National Park is easy from Cannonville. After spending time in Bryce, visit nearby Red Canyon and Kodachrome Basin State Park.

Bryce Canyon located in southwestern Utah in the Dixie National Forest, is a beautiful place full of twisted rock spires and capped domes. In actuality Bryce Canyon isn’t even a canyon at all, but is a series of eroded rock amphitheaters on the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The orange, red, yellow and white colors of the limestone formations make Bryce Canyon one of the world’s most breathtaking locations.

Things to do Activities to enjoy while in the Bryce Canyon region may include, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATV riding, aerial tours, back-packing, camping and fishing. Bryce Canyon trails offer varied degrees of difficulty from easy hikes, to some more challenging strenuous hikes. There are two trails that are set up for overnight hiking, Long Riggs Loop Trail and Under the Rim Trail. In total there are 50 miles of trails within Bryce Canyon. For winter-time visitors there are groomed cross-country ski trails, located within the Dixie National Forest.

Bucket List

Take a two or four hour horseback ride down into the magical amphitheaters.

Local Favorite

Sunset Point is one of the major lookouts at Bryce Canyon, but Shuttlerbugs beware – Sunset Point faces east.  Sunrise, not sunset, is the best time to photograph the vibrant colors.

History Petroglyphs in Bryce Canyon indicate that people were in the area several thousand year’s ago, but there is not a lot of information about these ancient groups. “Basketmaker” and Anasazi artifacts have been found south of Bryce Canyon which date to be approximately 10,000 years old. Native Americans of the Paiute tribe began living in surrounding valleys and plateaus, around the time the other cultures left the region. The first Caucasians were unable to explore the desolate and tough areas of the Bryce Canyon region until the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. A Spanish group of explores led by Sylvestre Escalante venture through the region in 1776. In the 1850s Mormon scouts visited the area to measure the possibility for agricultural development, grazing, and homesteading and the Bryce Canyon area was consequently first settled by Mormon Pioneers. Ebenezer Bryce, who established a ranch in the nearby Paria valley was the first pioneer to discover the formations of the canyon when he went looking for lost cattle. His only recorded comment about searching for his cattle within the large rock amphitheaters was, “It’s one hell of a place to lose a cow!” His neighbors later called the area “Bryce’s Canyon” and the name just stuck.

Geology Bryce Canyon National Park rests within the Colorado Plateau, and is on the southeastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce Canyon is unique for its geologic spires called “Hoodoos”. These formations are continually being shaped by the forces of erosion, primarily during winter months, when water freezes and expands within the cracks of the rock, forcing the frail limestone to split apart. Bryce Canyon’s rim ranges in elevation from 8,000 to 9,000 feet and its’ geologic formations are quite different than those of the south rim of the Grand Canyon, or Zion National Park. The highest part of the park is Rainbow Point, which is at the end of twenty-mile long scenic drive. From this point the Aquarius Plateau, the Henry Mountains, White Cliffs, and other distant formations may be seen.

Biology Bryce Canyon has a wide range of animals and plants. The mammals in the park include bobcats, mountain lions, mule deer, foxes, ground squirrels, and marmots. The most common large mammal you will see in Bryce Canyon is the mule deer. There are 160 different types of birds including swifts and swallows, that are commonly seen in the summer but migrate away for the winter season. Other common birds are eagles, owls, and ravens, which stay year-round. Plants and tree’s within Bryce Canyon are varied based on elevation within the park.

Kanab is Utah’s Best-Kept Secret

Stay in the center of utah's wild country with national parks and monuments galore..

Base out of Kanab, Utah, to enjoy magical landscapes, fantastic food and local charm on the doorstep of Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon national parks. Here are four reasons to stay.

Otherworldly Landscapes

Some of the world’s most magical landscapes are just a quick drive from downtown Kanab. While it’s worth applying for the permit lottery ( www.recreation.gov/permits/4251909 ) for the famous, candy-striped rock formation known as the Wave, don’t get your hopes up. Instead, head to White Pocket, an equally beautiful formation made up of deep red rock splashed with contrasting white. You won’t need a permit to explore White Pocket, but you will need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Read more about The Wave vs. White Pocket .

Hikers at White Pocket, Vermillion Clifffs National Monument

To feel like a kid again, bring the family to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, where a gorgeous field of pink sand dunes offer opportunities for hiking, riding ATVs and sand-sledding. You can rent sand sleds and sand boards at the state park office.

“It’s like a giant sandbox,” says Camille Johnson Taylor of Kane County Office of Tourism. “It brings out the kid in all of us.”

4-wheeler tracks at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Utah

Southwestern Utah is home to Buckskin Slot Canyon, one of the longest continuous slot canyons in the world, as well. Of course, you’ll also find easy access to nearby national parks, monuments and recreation areas. Zion is just over 30 minutes away, Lake Powell is just over an hour drive, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon’s North Rim are just under 1.5 hours and Grand Staircase-Escalante and Vermillion Cliffs national monuments are right on Kanab’s doorstep.

Hiking Buckskin Gulch in Utah.

Incredible Food

For small-town Utah, Kanab has a truly incredible culinary scene. You’d be missing out if you didn’t start your day at Kanab Creek Bakery for coffee, pastries and other delicious European-style breakfast and lunch dishes featuring local ingredients. Another Kanab favorite is Sego, where Chef Shon Foster cooks up an upscale and eclectic small plates menu. Think foraged mushrooms with butter and sage, duck lo mein and elote fritters, all sharing the same menu.

“Something about a great meal here just resonates more in the soul,” says Johnson Taylor. “Everything tastes better after a day spent in the fresh air with incredible scenery.”

Explore Like a Kanab Local

There are near infinite places to explore in this corner of the world and trying to plan your own excursions can be daunting. Instead, book everything from slot canyoneering to horseback riding to hiking with a local guide. With a guide, you won’t have to worry if your vehicle will make it down a sandy four-wheel-drive road, if you have the proper gear, or if you know how to navigate often-confusing desert terrain. Not only is exploring with a guide often safer and less of a planning headache, but you’ll get to see parts of Utah you wouldn’t have stumbled upon on your own.

Local guides can share everything from the history of the area to the botany and geology while they take you out for the day. Check out East Zion Experiences for canyoneering and slot canyon tours, Kanab Tour Company for ATV and hiking tours and Roam Outdoor Adventure for a wide range of tours including the area’s only Via Ferrata. You can also combine your Roam tour with a glamping stay at Cave Lakes Canyon Ranch.

Don’t forget, most guides heavily depend on tips. Be sure to factor in at least a 20% cash tip for a job well done for each of your guides.

Kanab’s Small Town Charm

While Kanab is a great place to visit, it’s also full of wonderful locals who call the town home. Take the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the largest no-kill shelter in the country. This large sanctuary nestled among red rocks houses up to 1,600 dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, pigs and more. Take a tour to see their work or volunteer for the day. You might just end up bringing home your new best friend. If you have your pet with you, be sure to stay at Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile Hotel in Kanab. It’s a super pet-friendly experience with modern built-in cubbies for pet sleeping, dog-washing stations and a gorgeous, light-filled gift shop where complimentary breakfast and coffee are served. Your stay helps support the sanctuary.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary near Kanab, Utah

Kanab is the biggest town in the county, but this area of southwestern Utah is full of other charming small towns to explore. Stay at the Zion Ponderosa Ranch in the small hamlet of Mt. Carmel, right on the doorstep to Zion National Park. You’ll find glamping along with cabins and RV sites. Or head to Big Water which is Lake Powell’s quieter gateway town. For a mountain escape, Duck Creek Village is situated amongst the pines with access to plentiful ATV trails.

Kanab Utah: A Paradise for Outdoor Adventures!

C onsidering that I have visited the little town of Kanab, Utah six times in the past six years, I feel like I have become a bit of an expert on some of the reasons why Kanab is a great place to visit and use as a “home base” for any trip to Southern Utah or Northern Arizona.

So What's So Special About Kanab?

Kanab is a special little city that tends to capture people's hearts so they keep returning year after year. Mr. Misadventures and I have been there so many times that it feels like a second home and we have watched in wonder at how its grown, expanded, and matured.

When we first started going, there was hardly any infrastructure. Now there are so many choices and even more things to do. We never get bored!

The Kanab area is a great place for anyone interested in outdoor recreation, as it's famous for its unique landmarks, canyons, and red rock formations. There are many hikes in the area – including the famous hike to The Wave – and outdoor activities are available for people of all ability levels, from beginning hikers to those ready for more advanced adventures.

And if you don't hike, no worries – many of the national parks offer a scenic byway or drive so you can still bask in the beauty of the area.

Many people opt to stay in Kanab if they're doing a national parks road trip but it's also a great place to stay for several days, day-tripping to a different park or canyon and returning to your Kanab hotel each night.

Additionally, Kanab's self-proclaimed title is “Little Hollywood”, as it's made its appearance in more than one Hollywood western (actually more like 100) and there are still movie sets to visit.

Not to mention the local history and Native American artifacts that can be found at places like Moqui Cave and the Kanab Heritage House Museum.

Truthfully, Kanab is just a special place and deserves to be at the top of the list of places to visit in the United States.

Where is Kanab, Utah?

Kanab is located in Kane County, Utah, just over the border from Arizona. It's one of the best places to use as a home base when exploring the Southwest and the national parks, as it provides easy access to parks like Bryce Canyon and Zion – and even the Grand Canyon!

It's also within easy driving distance from several major cities. Here are some driving times:

  • Kanab to Las Vegas – 3 hours
  • Kanab to Salt Lake City – 5 hours
  • Kanab to Phoenix – 5.5 hours
  • Kanab to St. George – 1.5 hours
  • Kanab to Cedar City – 1.5 hours

Parks, National Parks, and Canyons Near Kanab Utah

One of the main draws to Kanab, Utah is the spectacular national and state parks and canyons in the area. It's an outdoor lovers' paradise, with the chance to hike slot canyons and sand caves and see some unforgettable rock formations.

If you love to be outside, you'll never run out of things to do in Kanab, Utah! Here are a few of the best canyons and parks you won't want to miss.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Kanab UT makes the perfect home base for Bryce Canyon National Park , located under an hour and a half away. It's one of the Mighty Five National Parks in Utah. Bryce Canyon, with its many amphitheater formations, is one of the top sites to see in Utah.

There are many hikes at the national park, ranging from the easy Navajo Loop to the strenuous Fairyland Loop. Sunset Point is the perfect spot to catch the views, including of Thor's Hammer and Silent City, without much walking.

There are also opportunities in/near the park for horseback riding, mountain biking, ATV tours, and ranger-guided activities like full moon hikes and astronomy programs.

Zion National Park

Zion (another of the Mighty Five) is one of the most famous national parks in the United States and Kanab is the perfect place to base yourself for a visit, as the distance from Kanab Utah to Zion National Park is just 30 miles.

Within the park, you'll find mountains, mesas, slot canyons, natural arches, and more. Some of the most popular places in the park are Angels Landing and Echo Canyon. There's also the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, for those who prefer epic views without a hike.

Belly of the Dragon

If you're heading to Bryce or Zion from Kanab, you'll want to add a stop to the Belly of the Dragon. It's a short hike, just .5 miles, through a man-made tunnel. It was originally a water culvert under the highway but it's now a fun, family-friendly hiking path.

Capital Reef National Park

Capitol Reef National Park is my personal favorite national park in Utah. It is one of the Mighty Five but I think it often gets overlooked. It is a bit of a stretch from Kanab, it is 3 hours and 15 minutes away, but if you started super early in the morning and got back to Kanab late, you could do it in a day trip.

Grand Canyon National Park

Kanab, UT is a great base for those who want to explore the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, as it's just under a 2-hour drive. This is the least visited part of the park, so a great place to explore if you're hoping to escape some of the massive crowds.

Some of the most popular things to do in the Grand Canyon North Rim are the short Bright Angel Point Hike from the Grand Canyon Lodge and a scenic drive.

We also camped at The Toroweap Overlook which is 3 hours and 15 minutes away and has great North Rim views as well.

Pipe Spring National Park

Imagine finding an oasis in the middle of a vast desert. That's exactly what happened here in the Arizona Strip between the Grand Canyon and the Vermillion Cliffs. Pipe Spring National Park has been a gathering spot for centuries, attracting hunter-gatherers, Spanish explorers, and Mormon settlers fleeing persecution.

The park is 20 minutes from Kanab.

As you explore the area, you'll come across the traditional kahns, built with juniper branches and brush, that once provided shelter for the Kaibab Paiutes. There's also a fascinating ranch house known as “Winsor Castle” that housed the Mormon settlers.

And if you're up for a little adventure, take a stroll along the Ridge Trail. It's a leisurely hike that rewards you with breathtaking views of the Arizona Strip, Mount Trumbull, the Kaibab Plateau, and Kanab Canyon.

FAQs About Kanab & National Parks

Kanab to Bryce Canyon National Park is a 90-minute drive, while Kanab to Zion is a short 30-minute drive.

How far is it from Kanab to Grand Canyon?

Kanab to Grand Canyon is just under a 2-hour drive. You will be closest to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Can you enter Zion from Kanab?

You can't enter Zion National Park from Kanab but the entrance is just a short 30-minute drive away, making it the perfect base for your national park trip.

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Vermillion Cliffs National Monument spans over 280,000 acres in northern Arizona, bordering the Kaibab National Forest and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It's about a bit over an hour's drive from Kanab and one of the top outdoor recreation spots.

Note that there is no visitors center in the national monument, so if you have questions or want more info, you'll need to check with the BLM Kanab Visitor Center.

Coyote Buttes

Some of the most popular attractions within the monument are Paria Canyon and Coyote Buttes. Coyote Buttes is broken down into two parts – Coyote Buttes South and Coyote Buttes North. Coyote Buttes North is home to the famous The Wave, which I discuss more below.

You used to be able to explore South Coyote Buttes on your own without a permit, but that is no longer the case. 10 people are allowed to visit Coyote Buttes South per day. Applications for the permits are available every day from 9:30 am-10 am. A drawing is held daily.

Like White Pocket (see more below) South Coyote Buttes is a remote area that requires a 4 x 4 high clearance vehicle to access. 2WD and AWD vehicles WILL get stuck. You need to be comfortable driving in deep sand and navigating a remote wilderness area (we recommend skill with Gaig maps as well).

The lottery is held in the BLM office. You will need to bring a pen or pencil, have your car license plate number, and an emergency contact person.

If you win the lottery, the fee is $5 per person and dog. They ONLY accept cash or checks – NO credit cards!

White Pocket

White Pocket, known as the “lesser Wave” is another popular attraction within Vermilion Cliffs and does not require a permit to visit. The stunning rock formations tend to have a white or tan cap, which gives them their name. A must-visit, especially if you can't get permits for the other sites.

We have been to White Pocket 7 times. Our visits have occurred at various times of the year. We have done single-day trips and camping trips.

Here is my full guide to White Pocket!

Locations like White Pocket and Coyote Buttes will make you forget the Wave altogether. The colors in these rock formations are equally as fantastical and you can explore for hours thinking you are on an alien planet.

The number one reason to visit Kanab is to see the Wave in Arizona. We've been twice and are hoping for a third-times-the-charm situation on our upcoming trip in November (2023).

This is a magical, and well-protected, sandstone rock formation on many photographers and hikers' natural bucket lists. You access it via a 5-mile hike and you MUST have a permit for the Wave.

There are only 20 daily permits given out.

As of March 15, 2022, the BLM implemented a new mobile-based system for obtaining one of the daily lottery permits to hike the Wave. The new system is called the Coyote Buttes North Daily Lottery (The Wave).

All permits to hike in Coyote Buttes North are issued via an online lottery held by recreation.gov.

There are 2 BLM offices in Kanab, the one that performs the Wave lottery is located at 745 East Highway 89. Generally, between 150  to 300 people are trying for a permit on a daily. The lottery is at 9:00 a.m., so get there early.

It's easier to get a permit if you are a single hiker, also your chances are better in December, January, or February.

If you win a permit, it is for the next day.

So whether you are a lucky winner, or if you don't get a permit (the more likely scenario) you are in a prime position to head to all the amazing locations just minutes away. While visiting the Wave is pretty spectacular , there are still PLENTY of things to visit.

Angel Canyon

Angel Canyon is located just a few miles outside of Kanab and is most famous for being home to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (more on them below). However, within the property of the sanctuary, are a few different trails.

Hidden Lake is a 1.5-mile trail that takes you to a water-filled cave underneath a cliff, as well as past Puebloan ruins and ancient pictographs on the rock wall. Angels Overlook is another 1.5-mile hike, over some steep inclines. You can start or end near Angel Village, where you can grab lunch.

Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is one of the most famous things to do near Kanab Utah. Located about an hour and a half away on private Navajo Nation land, Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon with stunning natural architecture that's been shaped by water and wind erosion.

To visit Antelope Canyon, you'll need to join a guided tour and get your entry ticket in advance. Most people hike the Upper Antelope Canyon, though the more adventurous may appreciate the challenge of the Lower Antelope Canyon, which requires navigating stairways and ladders to enter the canyon.

Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon

Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon, also known as Red Canyon, is considered one of the most beautiful canyons in the area and should be at the top of your list of things to do in Kanab UT. It's a short, easy hike to access the canyon but it is prone to flash floods, which can change the landscape.

You should always check with the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Visitor Center first.

Spooky Gulch

Spooky Gulch is located in the same area as Peekaboo Canyon Kanab and can actually be combined with it to make a longer loop hike.

Note that some scrambling is required to navigate Spooky Gulch and it does get quite narrow in some spaces, so if you're claustrophobic, this probably isn't the hike for you.

Lake Powell

Lake Powell is located 90 minutes from Kanab in Page, Arizona. It's an artificial reservoir the Colorado River and a very popular boating destination. You can even rent a houseboat to cruise around!

While you're in the area, be sure to check out the famous hike to Horseshoe Bend as well. The parking lot is just 3 miles outside of Page.

Buckskin Gulch

Located just an hour from Kanab, Buckskin Gulch is one of the biggest attractions in the area. It's the longest slot canyon in the Southwest. While you can make a day trip out of it, serious hikers can go on a 4-day adventure to hike the entire 20 miles.

It's found between the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Kanab and the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness in Arizona, with multiple trailheads available.

The most easily accessible for a day hike is the Wire Pass Trailhead, which is considered “moderately easy”, while other parts of the canyon are prone to flash floods, quicksand, and other obstacles.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Located between Kanab and Zion National Park, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is an underrated state park that you need to add to your list of things to do in Kanab! It's a unique destination as the sand dunes are moved by wind, so it's an ever-changing landscape.

In addition to hiking, there are areas for off-roading and sandboarding as well, so it can be quite the place for an adrenaline rush!

It is stunning at sunset. It is our favorite sunset spot when we are staying in Kanab.

Kodachrome Basin

This hidden gem, named after Kodak Film Corp, boasts vibrant sandstone spires, majestic red rock mountains, and breathtaking blue skies. It's an hour and 45 minutes from Kanab.

Kodachrome Basin is home to a mesmerizing array of rock formations in hues of red, yellow, pink, white, and brown. The towering sandstone chimney spires are remnants of ancient springs or geysers, standing tall against the backdrop of clear blue skies.

Check out the breathtaking views at Kodachrome Basin from the many short trails in the area. This picturesque area was rightfully named by the National Geographic Society, with the blessing of Kodak Film Corp.

The park is located at 2905 S. Kodachrome State Park Rd. There is an entrance fee of $8 per vehicle and is open year-round.

Don't miss out on this captivating destination that is only a stone's throw away from the famous Bryce Canyon National Park.

More Things To Do Near Kanab, Utah

Once you've hiked and explored the nearby canyons and parks to your heart's content, there's still more to discover near the small town of Kanab. Seriously – you could spend weeks here and not get bored!

Here are some of my favorite non-hiking things to do in Kanab, Utah, and other nearby attractions.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Kanab is known all over the world for its animal rescue training and its volunteer program. You can apply to volunteer online and even stay on the grounds in one of their guest cabins (reserve in advance!) There are many programs to choose from and your experience will be truly rewarding.

Besides the magnificent backdrop of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, there's a magical pet cemetery, Angel's Rest which is a sacred experience, and delicious vegan and vegetarian food in their cafe. If you have any love for animals, you will want to visit Best Friends.

Toadstool Hoodoos

Do not miss an easy hike and fun photo opportunity at the Toadstool Hoodoos (GPS Coordinates 37.101310, -111.873169) 45 miles east of Kanab.

A cool stop just 10 minutes from Kanab, Moqui Cave is a history museum filled with Native American artifacts and dinosaur tracks. Yes, an eclectic combination, which is part of what makes it worth a visit. They also have a unique collection of fluorescent minerals that you can see under UV light.

Hot Air Balloon Festival

You've likely seen photos of hot air balloons rising about the beautiful red rock cliffs. While hot air balloon rides happen throughout the year, there's one big annual event worth checking out if you'll be in the area – the Kanab Balloon Festival, also known as Kanab Balloons and Tunes Festival.

The 3-day festival takes place one weekend each year – in 2024 the dates will be February 16 to 18 – with about 40 hot air balloon pilots lifting off from the formal Coral Cliffs Golf Course.

In addition to the hot air balloons, there's live music and other fun activities throughout the weekend.

Kanab Heritage House Museum

To learn a little more about the Kanab area and its history, stop by the Kanab Heritage House Museum. Considered the, “first modern home in Kane Country,” it was built by Henry Bowman in 1892 and was the home of several prominent families throughout the history of Kanab.

Guided tours are available but if you stop by outside opening hours, you can still take a self-guided tour of the property.

Little Hollywood Museum

Kanab has the self-proclaimed title of “Little Hollywood”, with over 100 different Hollywood productions having been filmed in the unique landscape. “Deadwood Coach” in 1924 was said to be the first movie filmed in Kanab, but many others followed. Most recently, Disney Pixar's “John Carter of Mars”.

As you might expect, Hollywood had a huge impact on the growth of Kanab – and that's what you'll find at the Little Hollywood Museum, including plenty of movie posters of Western legends and film set artifacts.

In addition to the museum, you can also find a gift shop, restaurant, and more. It's definitely with a stop!

Where to Eat & Drink in Kanab

Truth be told there are not a ton of dining options in Kanab. Thankfully there are a couple of gems. And these few make it worth it! You will also find several fast-food restaurants and chains like Pizza Hut Kanab, 2 grocery stores to pick up picnic supplies, and a handful of restaurants.

Whether you're looking for fine dining or casual eats, my favorites are listed below.

Willow Canyon Outdoor

This shop serves the absolute best coffee in Southern Utah! Sure you can pick up some great outdoor gear, or in my case, new boots when mine literally disintegrated around my feet, and the owner is super knowledgeable about the area, he is an ex-geologist, but above and beyond that, that makes a really damn good cup of coffee!

Address : Located at 263 South 100 East.

What's The Weather Like in Kanab, Utah?

Weather in Kanab varies throughout the year. For most of the year, it's mild and dry as the small city rarely sees more than 5 days of rain a month (and many months are much less). Heavy rain can bring flash floods in the canyons so make sure to pay attention to weather conditions. Check with the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) office.

However, as you would expect in the desert – summer is HOT. Expect average temperatures in the 90s from June to August and sometimes into September. Always have lots of water with you.

It's also important to be prepared for big temperature changes too, as the night-time average can be quite chilly, even if the days are hot.

Kanab weather in the winter is cold, with average lows in the mid-20s, but the average highs can still be in the 40s and 50s. It can snow which can impact your outdoor activities. If you are doing off-road activities during the winter I recommend that you hire a local tour guide/company as they know the roads and have the right equipment to deal with winter weather conditions.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Kanab?

The best time to visit Kanab is in the fall when the weather is still warm but not as hot as the summer months. The summer months can be incredibly busy too and the parks are much more enjoyable when they're not quite so crowded.

Late spring and into early June is also a pleasant time in Kanab.

One thing to note – be sure to check the opening dates of the national parks, as some do close in the winter.

Local Tours

Many of the outdoor activities include routes that are rather difficult and you must have a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle. We generally went with a local guide, I highly recommend Dreamland Safari Tours , we went with them several times, even for overnight camping.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Kanab is right on the Utah and Arizona border. They are in different time zones, so depending on your location you will need to pay attention to what time zone the meeting point is!

  • 9 Best Small Towns to Retire in Utah in 2024

Utah might be among the driest states in America, but it is remarkably endowed with natural beauty. Its vast desert landscape hosts five national parks punctuated with dramatic red rock formations, sandstone arches, and jagged mountains that transform into the best skiing destinations when it snows. The Beehive State also harbors a wealth of Native American history that can be seen in the eons-old petroglyphs inscribed on the desert rocks.

With its beautiful outdoor scenery, rich culture, and captivating history, Utah is a choice retirement destination, especially when you choose to settle in the smaller, more laidback towns. But with so many options available, it takes a great deal of due diligence to find a place that meets all your preferences. To help you out, here are some of the most desirable towns to retire in Utah in 2024.

Monticello, Utah. In Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monticello,_Utah By Ntsimp - Own work, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=6520103

Monticello is a small town of about 2,000 residents in San Juan County, steeped in history and teeming with exciting outdoor adventures. Its colorful beginnings date back to the 1880s when members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints settled in the territory. The Frontier Museum offers a vivid look into life in Monticello as it was in the last century by exhibiting ancient artifacts like vintage pieces of clothing and primitive telephonic tools.

Retirees need not worry about staying active in the town as numerous outdoor adventures in the vast desert surroundings call for enough physical activity. These include hiking excursions into the desert courtesy of Canyon Country Discovery Center to explore natural gems like the postcard-worthy Church Rock. Also, a laidback "tee time" surrounded by lush greenery and spectacular views would make for the perfect alternative. Homes in Monticello are conveniently below the state average, with a median value of $463,000.

Aerial View of Torrey, Utah in early Spring.

This tiny Wayne County village is less than five miles from Capitol Reef National Park , making it the outright getaway to the natural gem. This also promises retirees plenty of outdoor adventures into the heart of red rock country, where picturesque canyons, hills, and bluffs inspire awe. For those too weak to hike, Wilderness Ridge Adventures provides relaxed horseback riding tours that take you to popular vantage points like Goosenecks Overlook. However, the fastest and most comfortable way to explore Torrey's outdoor landscapes is to get behind the wheel for a drive along the "Journey Through Time Scenic Byway."

Torrey has a modest but charming art scene that should interest connoisseurs. A tour of the Torrey Gallery allows you to browse various fine art pieces by sculptors, photographers, and painters from the Utah region. With a median home value of $438,200, retirees will not have a difficult choice to invest in a local property.

This long-standing heritage is well documented inside Little Hollywood Land, where guests can witness classic movie sets and shop for cute memorabilia. This charming oasis in San Juan County boasts exquisite natural surroundings, flanked by breathtaking sandstone bluffs and the gentle waters of the San Juan River . As such, outdoor recreations abound for retirees, from hiking and canyoneering to rafting and tubing down the San Juan River. Tracing its history back to 1880, when it was founded, Bluff harbors a rich pioneering heritage that residents can discover at the Bluff Fort Historic Site. The facility houses a variety of interesting artifacts, including antique furnishings sourced from local families.

Meanwhile, the famous Sand Island Petroglyphs are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and show proof of several millennia of civilization. Art enthusiasts and treasure hunters can admire beautiful Native American Crafts at the Twins Rocks Trading Post and shop for souvenirs at the Cow Canyon Trading Post. For those planning to buy a home, it costs an average of about $680,000 to get a decent property in Bluff.

Cedar city in Utah State.

Sitting about 170 miles from Las Vegas , Cedar City presents a nice escape from the chaotic scenery of Sin City. However, there is no shortage of entertainment options, featuring a bustling art scene with world-class venues like the immaculate Southern Utah Museum of Art and the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Cedar City offers vital social amenities like the Cedar City Aquatic, where retirees can take advantage of swimming sessions to stay fit, as well as enjoy meaningful interactions with other members of the community.

For the ardent outdoorsmen, the sprawling Dixie National Forest presents a fair share of adventures across its two million-acre expanse, ranging from hiking and camping to horse riding and hunting. Furthermore, Zion National Park is only about 20 minutes from the town. The best part about choosing Cedar City to retire in Utah is that its median housing cost of $425,000 offers great value for money.

Sunset in Clinton, Utah.

In a region dominated by desert landscapes, this quaint community offers a hint of green spaces like Meadows Park and the Crane Field Golf Course, where pensioners can take advantage of the tranquil scenery to play a laidback game of golf. Clinton impresses with a couple of fitness facilities for those who want to stay ahead of their physical health, including All Fit Bungee and Anytime Fitness. And for those who stay with family, you can enroll the grandkids in the Shaw Dance Studio and Preschool, which is among the best in the region.

Several shopping outlets in the town promise retirees wonderful retail therapy sessions without having to go to the big cities around. They can address all their grocery and other household needs at the Walmart Supercenter and get generous discounts for clothing items at Ross Dress for Less. Finally, the average housing value in Clinton is around $560,000, which falls within the neighborhood of Utah's average.

Golf course sunrise in Kaysville, Utah.

A bunch of wonderful green areas, amusement centers, and art venues give Kaysville a pleasant personality, offering retirees a generally "happy" place to call home. There is enough entertainment for all ages at Kaysville Theater, which is ideal for fun times with family, while Boondocks Food & Fun features go-kart racing, bowling, arcade games, a mini golf course, and more. Performance art lovers can find inspiration from different productions staged at the Hopebox Theatre, dedicated to providing hope to cancer patients.

Stepping outside, seniors can enjoy delightful recreational opportunities at Barnes Park, which is known for housing various social amenities, including basketball courts, a softball field, picnic pavilions, and playgrounds. The same applies to the East Mountain Wilderness Park, which harbors nature trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Pensioners will have to spend a little above the state average to afford the $627,500 median home rate in Kaysville.

A view of a main street of Farmington lined by trees in Utah.

This bustling community in Davis County delights newcomers with an array of entertaining experiences, ensuring it is never a dull time. It is home to the expansive Lagoon Amusement Park, where senior citizens can channel their inner child to enjoy attractions like water slides, roller coaster rides, challenging games, and more. Quality shopping opportunities are readily accessible at Station Park, which houses several nationally recognized brands, multiple specialty shops, as well as highly-rated restaurants.

Those who prefer the outdoors can make the most of a tranquil natural setting at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, a hub for migratory shorebirds with awesome opportunities for hunting, birding, and nature viewing. Meanwhile, the average home in Farmington costs about $640,200.

Mine mosaic in Helper in Utah (USA).

Helper is located southeast of Salt Lake City and has a rich mining and railroad heritage that is well documented inside the Helper Museum. Housed inside the facility are a range of artifacts depicting life in Helper during its mining heydays. The town's art scene presents an impressive mix of art centers, which should give connoisseurs something to look forward to. Kt Gallery is home to a world-class selection of fine art pieces, ranging from paintings and sculptures to woodwork and print art, while Canvas Alchemy focuses on high-quality canvas prints.

Low-key bowling sessions at Gateway Lanes make for a perfect way to spend quality time with friends or family. And when you want to venture outside, try a relaxed game of golf at the beautiful Carbon Country Club Golf Course. Lastly, investing in a home in Helper will set you back around $350,000, which is pretty affordable.

Retiring in Utah allows senior citizens to enjoy the tranquility of its secluded desert atmosphere and take advantage of numerous adventures in the open spaces. The small communities inhabiting the towns above take pride in their rich history and offer amazing cultural experiences, allowing newcomers to feel a sense of belonging. Whether looking to stay fit with outdoor activities or immerse in local arts, these are some of the best places to retire in Utah, promising a high quality of life without having to break the bank.
