Cayo Coco: The Ideal Cuban Paradise

An Island Dream in Paradise

In the northern region of the central Cuban province of Ciego de Avila, Cayo Coco stands out beautifully from the environmentally diverse and highly protected Sabana-Camaguey archipelago.

This marvelous cay has become a natural tourist attraction, with some of the best beaches in Cuba , a comforting paradisiac landscape, and a wide range of exciting all-terrain and aquatic activities. That’s if you ever feel like leaving your chaise lounge on the powdery beach.

Cayo Coco’s Hottest Beaches

This lovely cay is part of a more extensive line of cays known as Jardines del Rey (Gardens of the King), which includes Cayo Romano, Cayo Cruz, and Cayo Guillermo, respectively. However, Cayo Coco’s principal attraction is the piercing blue and crystalline water beaches that form its coasts.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Playa Flamencos Beach

As you can tell by the name, you can surely expect a wildlife encounter with the pink flamingos that call this beach home, and from the looks of it, you’ll want to call it home too.

Playa de las Coloradas

A bit of a ‘rustic haven,’ Las Coloradas beach offers a more secluded detour from the most sought-after beaches.

Playa Larga

Known as the Long Beach, Playa Larga stretches its beautiful sands out for 2 ½ kilometers, from where you can also visit other equally attractive beaches like the famous Playa Pilar in Cayo Guillermo.

Things to do in Cayo Coco

As Cayo Coco is an eco-travel destination with a natural layout, many activities are centered on creating unique experiences for its visitors. The most tempting to try is scuba diving along the Coraline barrier reef, decorated with schools of colorful tropical fish and a picturesque seabed. But, if you don’t want to go through the scuba training, snorkeling will do OK to check out the marine life and stay close enough to run back to your Cuba Libre at the shore.

Another excellent encounter is swimming with dolphins out at sea or closer to the coast aboard a catamaran. And if you’re into sports, we recommend kitesurfing at Playa Larga, rock climbing at the Rocarena Climbing Center, or planning a fascinating bird-watching excursion.

Parque Natural El Bagá

A genuinely memorable adventure is a tour through the El Bagá Natural Park at Cayo Coco. The park has around 3 thousand acres of reserved land for the conservation of its ecosystem and was opened to allow travelers to experience Cuba’s wild nature. Among its biomes, you’ll find Bagá or Breadfruit tree forests, mangroves, water canals, and coastal lagoons - in which you’ll see beautiful and tropical endemic flowers and cacti.

Numerous reptile and amphibian species roam the park, like crocodiles, iguanas, and tortoises. In addition, the presence of bird fauna is significant as the Jardines del Rey is part of a central migratory bird corridor in the Caribbean.

Bagá Natural Park also has a recreated aboriginal village depicting Taíno Indian life before Columbus, while just ashore, an old pirate ship lays in ruins as a reminder of foreign arrivals.

Best Places to Stay in Cayo Coco

Cayo Coco has about ten hotels and resorts where you can spend an excellent vacation, but here are the top 5 that’ll make all the difference during your stay.

Sol Cayo Coco and Hotel Pullman Cayo Coco are located in prime ocean-view beach areas with fantastic all-inclusive service.

Hotel Colonial Cayo Coco adheres more to Cuba’s history and culture, with 19th-century architecture, natural green gardens, and a comfortable distance from the ocean.

In the case of Melia Cayo Coco, Memories Beach Caribe Resort , and Cayo Coco Beach Resort, you can expect to be catered to with impeccable service and high-quality standards for a more refined experience.

Getting there

The quickest and most efficient means of access to Cayo Coco is by plane to the island’s Jardines del Rey International Airport. This way, you can avoid the long road to the Ciego de Avila province and from there to the islets via a rock embankment that connects to the mainland.

Nevertheless, there’s always the option of taking a private taxi or an airconditioned omnibus from Havana International Airport (approx. 7 hours) or taking off from Varadero ( approx. 5 hours).

Jardines del Rey (Cayo Coco)

cayo coco cuba tourism

In the center of the Cuban north coast lies the island chain of the Jardines del Rey in the Atlantic Ocean. While Cayo Coco is the most famous bathing paradise of the archipelago, the other islands also welcome visitors with snow-white dream beaches, turquoise water and perfect bathing weather all year round. This article gives an overview of all important information about Cayo Coco and the other islands of the Jardines del Rey .

The Jardines del Rey archipelago is located about 20 km east of the second array of keys known as Cayo Santa Maria . Jardines del Rey translates as the Gardens of the King, which is quite accurate considering the beauty of the archipelago. For a long time, the islands were only popular among fishermen, as the shallow waters are home to a variety of marine life. The area was not developed for tourism until the early 1990s, after the first connecting road to the main island was built in the late 1980s. However, since then, the number of hotels has grown steadily.

The archipelago should not be confused with the Jardines de la la Reina - the Gardens of the Queen - which are located in the Caribbean Sea on the opposite side of the main island of Cuba.

Not only one single cayo

In addition to the uninhabited Cayo Ramano , the archipelago includes four islands with relevance for tourism. These are the Cayo Paredón Grande , on which the first hotel has just opened, as well as the Cayo Guillermo , which has already been developed with several hotels, and of course the best known and largest island, the Cayo Coco . In addition, there is Cayo Cruz , a little further east, which was recently developed with a connecting road and three new hotels. The effort of the Cuban authorities is to create  on the Cayo Cruz in the near future about 4000 hotel rooms.

All the cayos have white dream beaches with shallow crystal clear ocean shimmering in all shades of blue and turquoise. The sea is home to a varied underwater world, including impressive coral reefs full of colorful fish. The bays and lagoons are also home to many water birds, including the bizarre flamingos.

All four islands is located about 20 km in the Atlantic, surrounded by turquoise sea. There are two causeways that connect to the main island.

Guardalavaca

Santiago de cuba, las terrazas & soroa, varadero: the tropical getaway for sun, sand, and relaxation.

On the archipelago of the Jardines del Rey there are more than ten sections with over 50 kilometers of paradisaical beaches. Five of the beach sections are located on the main island, Cayo Coco , three on Cayo Guillermo , two on Cayo Paredón Grande and one on Cayo Cruz .

Beaches at Cayo Coco

  • The approximately three-kilometer-long Playa Flamencos is home to three bigger hotel complexes and represents one of the main beaches of Cayo Coco . Not far from the beach is also Plaza Los Flamencos, a shopping center.
  • North of Playa Flamenco lies Playa Prohibida - the forbidden beach. The surroundings of the beach are undeveloped and natural except for a beach bar. The narrow beach is characterized by its sand dunes up to fifteen meters high and is wonderful for a walk.
  • The Playa Larga is located on the northeast coast of Cayo Coco . The beach is with nearly 3 kilometers of length right wide and therefore is not too packed with guests. There are four hotels at Playa Larga , two of which are IBEROSTAR, one TRYP and the purely state-owned Hotel Colonial Cayo Coco. A good 500 meters from the beach is a small shopping center, the Centro Comercial La Gaviota, where handmade souvenirs, rum, coffee and of course cigars can be purchased.
  • Right next to Playa Larga lies Playa Colorades , the easternmost beach on Cayo Coco. There are two Meliá hotels, a Pullman and the Sol Cayo Coco, located on the beach, which is a good two and a half kilometers in length.
  • The Playa la Laula is a beautiful, very extensive beach with only two hotels, with the Memories Caribe Beach Resort being the better one.

Beaches at Cayo Guillermo

  • At the far east of Cayo Guillermo you will find Playa Pilar , known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba. At the beach named after Hemingway's yacht, with crystal clear water and dunes up to 15 meters in height. In a small beach bar, sunbeds with umbrellas can be lent (5 USD). In recent years, two new hotel complexes have been constructed not far from the beach, including Cuba's second Kempinski luxury hotel, which is located at the western end of the beach.
  • With a length of 3.5 kilometers, the Playa del Paso is the longest beach on Cayo Guillermo . There are eight hotel complexes along the beach. At the southern end, there lies a small marina (Marina Cayo Guillermo) from which catamaran and boat excursions depart.
  • Located between the beaches of Playa Pilar and Playa El Paso, is Playa del Medio , on the edges of which are two hotels. At the southeastern tip of the beach is the Gran Muthu Imperial, and to the northeast another resort has recently opened.

Cayo Paredón Grande

  • More than six kilometers long Playa los Pinos is located on the east side of Cayo Paredón Grande . The beach was out of the way for a long time and was little visited, but last year a new hotel was built and others will follow soon.
  • The Playa del Norte , about four kilometers long, is located on the northeast coast of Cayo Paredón Grande. The beautiful beach has been left in its natural state so far, but is planned to be developed for tourism.

On the developed part of Cayo Curz there is a about 10 kilometers long beautiful beach. There is another wonderful beach on the untouched Cayo Mégano Grande .

See & Do

You can book activities and guided tours through the state-run tour operators, which have small offices in the hotels.

  • In the middle of El Baga Natural Park (map), about four kilometers south of Playa Flamenco , lies the Sitio La Güira , a traditional farmhouse. On the grounds is the Ranchon Aguada de Pedro , a restaurant with a small museum. If you want, you can also stay quite inexpensively in one of the traditional huts (see Accommodation). It is a good place for an escape out of the resort.
  • At the southern tip of Caya Guillermo you will find the Laguna Flamingos , which, as the name suggests, is often home to a large number of flamingos. The lagoon with its bizarre pink birds can be observed and photographed from the side of the main road.
  • In the middle of El Baga Natural Park , located about four kilometers south of Playa Flamenco , is the Sitio La Güira , a resort in the style of a traditional farmhouse. On the grounds is the Ranchon Aguada de Pedro , a restaurant that is an ideal place for an excursion. Furthermore, there is a small museum. If you want, you can also stay quite inexpensively in one of the traditional huts (details see below under accommodation).
  • The Rocarena Climbing Center or the Parque de Escalada is located in the east of Cayo Coco between Playa Larga and Playa Las Coloradas . On the almost 20 meters high facility can be climbed on different levels of difficulty. There is also a small climbing wall. Visitors receive professional (safety) instructions. The prices are age-dependent: Two hours of climbing costs 5 USD (up to 8), 12 USD (8 to 16), or 16 USD (16 and over). Each additional hour costs half the entrance extra. In addition, you can climb on the wall (5 USD for 15min) or also do a small bungee jump (10 USD).
  • There are several jeep tours available. The longest excursion includes a visit to the delphinium, a sightseeing tour of the historic center of the city of Morón , a visit to a crocodile farm and a catamaran ride in the afternoon. The price is 150 USD per person. Another excursion includes a speedboat ride and a visit to Loma de Cunagua (100 USD).
  • Just two kilometers off Playa Pilar lies the small Cayo Media Luna in the Atlantic Ocean. The Cuban ex-dictator Batista had a summer residence on this little island. The Cayo also appears in Hemingway's novel. It can be assumed, that the famous writer is fished there. Today there is a restaurant located in the one and only building. In addition, there are also several beaches that invite visitors to swim and snorkel.

On & under the water

  • The dive center Blue Diving is located directly on the beach of the Melia Cayo Coco Hotel on Cayo Guillermo . At least twice a day, a boat departs to one of the sensational 13 dive sites. During a dive one can expect to see tropical fish and corals, and with a little luck you may also encounter rays, turtles or nurse sharks. The first dive costs 45 USD. The more you dive, the cheaper it gets: 10 dives will cost you 315 USD. Beginners can also take certified courses. Paying for the dives with credit cards is also possible.
  • On Cayo Coco, near the Hotel Iberostar Mojito, you will find a kite school at the beach, where you can rent equipment or participate in courses. The school has a website where you can find offers and prices.
  • Starting from Marina Gaviota , several catamaran excursions are offered. During the trip, you have several opportunities to swim and snorkel in the paradisiacal waters. Stops are made at a shallow sandbank. Equipment, drinks (including beer, rum & cocktails). Lunch and air-conditioned transfer from the hotel are included. The excursion is about eight hours and the price is 80 USD per person.
  • The Laguna de La Leche () is located just a little north of the small town of Morón . The name ("Milky Lagoon") is due to the whitish color of the water, caused by the high content of limestone in the water. The lake is the largest natural freshwater reservoir in Cuba. There are many fish in the lake, so it is popular with anglers and flamingos alike. On the southern shore, there is a restaurant and bar that are located on stilts above the water. There is also the possibility of boat trips.
  • The Parque Nacional Caguanes is an excursion destination for nature lovers. The park is especially known for different cave systems and its very interesting flora and fauna. The most famous cave is the Cueva Grande - the big cave. In the area it is possible to hike and observe birds (pelicans, flamingos & tocororos). Guided excursions to the national park can be booked at Ecotur. O ffices of the stat-run tour agency can be found on Cayo Coco at Hotel Sol as well as in the town of Morón .
  • From the observation deck of the Loma de Cunagua (), which is over 300 meters in height, one has a wonderful panoramic view of the northern part of the province of Ciego de Ávila .
  • Further destinations are the cities of Sancti Spiritus , Camagüey and Trinidad . A great treasure of breathtaking nature offers the Sierra del Escrambray .

Getting around

  • A modern sightseeing bus ( Jardines del Rey Bus Tour ) operates during the day between the hotels, beaches and sights along the various cayos. The buses run from 8 am to 4 pm. The times are indicated at the bus stops in front of the hotels and other stops. The price of the tickets is 5 USD per person per day. The route runs from the far west (Playa Pilar) to the Aparthotel Islazul Azul. Since the buses are open at the top, you should not forget the sunscreen essential for Cuba. If you want to take the last bus in the late afternoon, you have to expect that it can get very packed.
  • Modern state cabs are waiting in front of the hotel facilities. Alternatively, you can take one of the old-timer cabs, which are only slightly more expensive. Cabs can also be ordered in hotels at the reception. In the case of airport transfers, one should make reservations in advance.

Getting there & Excursions

  • Rental cars can also be reserved on all cayos. Those who only want to take a small tour also have the option of renting scooters. There are 50cc and 125cc to choose from, with prices starting at 25 USD per day. Bicycles can also be rented at some hotels (5 USD / day). All information about renting and driving vehicles can be found in the article about rental cars .
  • Those arriving by airplane will pass by the small airport on Cayo Coco ( Jardines del Rey Airport) . Domestic flights to and from Havana are also operated from this airport. Depending on the location of the hotel, the transfer from the airport can take up to an hour.

On the Cayos there are exclusively larger hotel resorts, almost all of which fall into the five-star luxury segment. In recent years, new hotels have been built continuously. Nevertheless, the number of vacationers remains relatively manageable. Most of the hotels are managed by international chains. Among the chains are IBEROSTAR, Meliá and Kempinski. The only alternative to a hotel is the Sitio La Güira , where travelers can stay in inexpensive (simple) cabins.

Cayo Guillermo is currently home to ten hotels on three stretches of beach. The most exclusive resort, the Kempinski Resort, is located at the end of Playa Pilar, at the western tip of the island. At the other end of the beach is the IBEROSTAR Playa Pilar. In the middle of the cayo, two resorts share a 600-meter beach, Playa del Medio. The remaining six hotels are located at the eastern end of the cayo, along the longest section of beach, Playa El Paseo, which is a good 3.5 kilometers long.

Situated in the Archipiélago de Sabana-Camagüey, or the Jardines del Rey (King’s Gardens) as travel brochures prefer to call it, Cayo Coco is Cuba's fourth-largest island, a 370-sq-km beach-rimmed key that is unashamedly dedicated to tourism. The area north of the Bahía de Perros (Bay of Dogs) was uninhabited before 1992, when the first hotel – the Cojímar – went up on adjoining Cayo Guillermo. The bulldozers haven't stopped buzzing since.

Cuba's all-inclusive paradise: a guide to Cayo Coco

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

Welcome to the land of wild flamingos. You’ll see hundreds of them, if not thousands, walking through the lagoons that lead out to Cayo Coco. Cuba is well-known for its cayos (cays), strings of some of the most picturesque archipelagos in the world. Surprisingly, there are about 4,000 of them dotting the coastline.

Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Santa Maria are just a few that lure travelers with their powdery sand and cerulean seas. They range from completely uninhabited to fully built out with all-inclusive resorts that cater to thousands of tourists each year. The coral reefs in Cuba are so well preserved because the island hasn’t experienced the over-tourism that many other tropical nations have, making this a snorkeling and scuba diving paradise.

There's so much more to explore in our Cuba Travel Guide

How to get to cayo coco, cuba.

Jardines del Rey Airport (CCC airport code) is the closest international airport, and if you fly in, it’ll only take you 20 minutes or so to get to your hotel. Most resorts have shuttles that are included in your all-inclusive package, but if not, it’ll cost you about 20 CUC to take a taxi. If you’re driving from Havana, get comfy because it’s going to take you six to seven hours depending on how many times you stop. The Autopista will take you the majority of the way, to Sancti Spiritus, where you will hop on the Carretera Central heading towards Moron and out to the cays.

If you’re traveling from Camaguey by car, it’s much closer at just under three hours. You’ll head northwest on Carretera Central to Ciego de Avila, a drive that’ll take you about an hour and a half. When you get to Ciego de Avila, you’ll head east on Avenida Antonio Guiteras to Morón. You’ll know you’re almost there when you see the long stretch of highway that goes virtually into the ocean. There’s only one road that goes in and out of Cayo Coco and it is insanely beautiful to drive it. The lagoons are full of brightly colored, wild flamingos and you can see them for miles around.

Why you should visit Cayo Coco, Cuba

It’s hard to imagine beaches more beautiful than in the Jardines del Rey region of Cuba. They are so quintessential paradise it almost seems as if they aren’t real. There are few places we have been that have actually taken your breath away (Positano, Italy was one of them) and Cayo Coco was another. If Heaven had a beach, it would look like these cayos.

White, sugary sand lines the shoreline and you can wade into the warm turquoise water all the way up to your chest without being battered by the waves. This is where the sky meets the sea and you often can’t tell where one begins and the other ends. The sunsets and sunrises are soft sorbets of pinks, oranges and yellows. Many people don't know beauty like this really exists outside of Photoshop. If all you planned to do on vacation was count your footprints in the powdery sand, that is reason enough to visit Cayo Coco. But don’t worry, there are plenty of things to do in Cayo Coco besides sitting in a beach chair and drinking in the surroundings, you’ll find them below.

Where to eat in Cayo Coco, Cuba

The good news is, most hotel packages in Cayo Coco include all-you-can-eat at their expansive restaurants and buffets. The bad news is, those buffets can be hit or miss and are often not designed with your inner food critic in mind. That doesn’t mean the food isn’t good, just picture giant pans of hot food and soft-serve ice cream machines.

If you want something a little more intimate and less cafeteria-style, there are a couple places that are worth leaving the resorts for, and we recommend you try at least one. Lenny’s Bar & Grill may sound a little too “Margaritaville” for those looking for an authentic experience, but you won’t regret it. The open-air restaurant sits right along a private cove called Playa Prohibida and serves freshly grilled seafood and cold drinks.

Planning a trip to the Caribbean? Check out our

Caribbean travel guide..

Ranchon las Dunas is a great option that you don’t have to leave the beach to find. It sits right along the ocean, sandwiched between the big resorts TRYP Cayo Coco and Sol or Melia Cayo Coco. If you’re out walking along the beach, you’ll likely stumble upon this thatch-roofed restaurant looking for a cold beer. Get excited, because that beer will only cost you about a buck so you might as well get comfortable, have a few cold ones and order lunch while you’re at it.

Here it is again, that fresh lobster and shrimp recommendation, but if seafood isn’t your thing, you can’t go wrong with the pork and yellow rice. And don’t forget, you can always ask the staff which dish they think is the most delicious.

What to do in Cayo Coco, Cuba

There are lots of things to do within the resorts themselves. Many people come to Cuba to party, and the resorts take note of that sentiment and do it up with nightly concerts, salsa lessons, dance parties and pool parties. Music is a huge part of Cuban culture, so you’ll find it nearly everywhere you go. From the DJs at the pool parties to live salsa bands and trios at the restaurants, you’ll get a good mix of music from all over the world.

Never in a million years did we think we’d be surrounded by Canadian hockey fans blaring ACDC during the playoffs, but it happened. If you want to check out a nightclub nearby, La Cueva Del Jabali is a unique place tucked into a cave where you can dance the night away. If you want more of an authentic cave tour experience, check out the caves in Viñales .

And let’s not forget the water sports. You’re right in the middle of the Caribbean and there’s no shortage of aquatic fun to have. There’s deep sea and fly-fishing excursions in the neighboring Cayo Romano and kite surfing right along the beach near the hotel TRYP. If you’re looking for an adventure that is fun for the whole family, there are glass bottom boat tours that will only cost you around 20-25 CUC per person. You’ll watch the captain dive for starfish, feed the fish and you can snorkel right off the boat.

Cayo Coco Travel Guide

Uncover Cayo Coco's highlights: Attractions, accommodation, and costs

Scenic wooden boardwalk along a tropical beach at sunset.

In the middle of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, Cayo Coco is one of the most popular seaside resorts of Cuba.

But under its enchanting appearances, is it really a small idyllic and natural paradise?

Is it the best place to put your suitcases in Cuba ? We tell you everything!

Cayo Coco in a few words

Located in the Jardines del Rey Archipelago, in the Province of Ciego de Ávila, Cayo Coco is the 4th largest island of the country.

It is also one of the most touristic places in Cuba .

Cayo Coco, like the surrounding cayos, is not inhabited by Cubans.

And for good reason: the vast tourist complexes constitute the only infrastructures of the island, and, like Varadero, Cayo Guillermo or Cayo Levisa, the island is not accessible to Cubans except for those who are part of the staff of hotels.

Hotels are concentrated in the north.

The rest of Cayo Coco (about 85%) is covered with mangrove and therefore difficult to access. There, in the middle of mangroves, between 130 and 150 species of birds have taken up residence (cormorants, pelicans, flamingos, etc.).

The island is named after a white ibis, called “coco” by the locals.

How to get to Cayo Coco

Cayo Coco is connected to the main island of Cuba by a 27 kilometers long road-dike.

There is no bus connection, but you can go to the island by road, either by yourself if you are motorized, or by cab.

Count about 40 CUC for the trip from Moron, about 60 CUC from Ciego de Avila.

However, most of the tourists arrive directly at Cayo Coco airport.

Domestic flights chartered by the Cubana company regularly reach the island from Havana.

Air Canada also offers flights (with stopovers) between Paris and Cayo Coco.

Get around Cayo Coco

A Transtur minibus provides a daily shuttle service between the different hotels and places of interest on the island.

Count 5 CUC per person per day.

Things to do in Cayo Coco

On the program in Cayo Coco ? Relaxation, water sports and diving.

Diving centers

Cayo Coco has two diving centers:

  • The Blue Coco Diving (located in the HotelPullman Cayo Coco)
  • The Dive Center Marina Gaviota Cayo

Coco These two centers offer excursions to the diving spots around Cayo Coco.

Count about 40 CUC per dive (+ 10 CUC for the equipment).

The Dive Center Marina Gaviota Cayo Coco also organizes catamaran cruises, fishing trips and offers boats for rent.

Kitesurfing

Several areas specifically dedicated to kitesurfing have been delimited in Cayo Coco. In order to have access to these areas, visitors must pay a fee of 25 CUC.

These fees are included in the rentals and trainings, which vary between 110 CUC for one hour of training and 830 CUC for 12 hours.

Cayo Coco has 2 kitesurfing schools:

  • Kitesurf Cuba Travel
  • -Horizon 5 -Coco-Kite

3 other surfing schools offer their services on the neighboring island of Cayo Guillermo.

Horse and carriage rides

As everywhere in Cuba, it is possible to explore Cayo Coco on horseback. The rides lead visitors to discover the beaches of the island and on hiking trails. Carriage drivers also stand in front of the main hotels of Cayo Coco offering tours of the island. As for the budget, count between 5 and 30 CUC per person depending on the type of ride and its duration.

Spas in Cayo Coco

The island has two spas that invite travelers to a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle: -Acuavida Spa Talaso -Heiwa Spa (Plaza Los Flamencos) Each of these two spas has a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and of course massage rooms.

Shopping malls

With its two shopping malls, the island should delight shopaholics:

  • Centro Comercial La Gaviota: artisanal market and stores (cigars, souvenirs, jewelry, beach items, etc…
  • Plaza Los Flamencos: artisanal market, nightclub, spa, beauty salon, bowling, restaurant, jewelry store, cigar store.

Cueva del Jabali

The Cueva del Jabali is a cave converted into a cabaret and a nightclub. What a way to party in an unusual place! But be careful with your head, the ceiling is low..

Ocio Club Game Center

The Ocio Club Game Center features miniature golf, pool tables, arcade games and a bar.

Cayo Guillermo

Linked to Cayo Coco by a road, Cayo Guillermo is an islet of 13 km2.

Mostly known for the paradisiacal Playa Pilar, Cayo Guillermo is very similar to Cayo Coco, but maybe a little more confidential.

On the program: sunbathing and water sports!

Hotels in Cayo Coco

The hotels of Cayo Coco are concentrated in the north of the island.

We recommend two hotels which, we are sure, will make your stay in Cayo Coco an unforgettable moment!

Sunset at serene beach resort with cabanas

Melia Cayo Coco

the hotel overlooks a private beach and includes rooms on stilts.

On site, you will find a tennis court, a hairdresser, a souvenir store, a car and bicycle rental service, a gym, a nightclub, a wellness area… The swimming pool is really beautiful.

However, children are not allowed in this hotel.

Pullman Cayo Coco

located on the beachfront, the hotel is modern, which is far from always being the case in Cuba! It includes all the infrastructures one can dream of for a successful all-inclusive stay: swimming pool, tennis court, gym, wellness area, restaurant, diving center, etc.

Children are welcome here and even have access to a dedicated playground!

Natural paradise or impersonal tourist complex?

As for Varadero, it is difficult to frankly advise or advise against Cayo Coco.

It all depends on the way you want to travel to Cuba, your expectations and your priorities

If you are looking for a relaxing and wellness vacation, and you are leaning towards an all-inclusive stay, then Cayo Coco is made for you.

On the other hand, if you are fond of cultural visits and discoveries, skip it.

One last remark: Cayo Coco is isolated from the main Cuban tourist sites.

If you want to put your bags in a seaside resort but also want to explore the cultural heritage of the island, then we recommend you rather Varadero.

There, you will be able to make more easily day trips to discover the rest of the island ( Trinidad , Havana. , Santiago de Cuba. .).

Cayo Coco & Cayo Guillermo, Cuba

Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo are the two most popular islands in Cuba. Set along the north central coast, these islands boast beautiful beaches and azure-colored waters. Most of the hotels here are all-inclusive resorts.

Cayo Coco & Cayo Guillermo Cuba

Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo are the third-largest tourist hotspot in Cuba. This makes sense, considering that the beaches here are lovely and border warm sections of the ocean. There aren’t any towns on the islands, and the infrastructure is mostly made up of all-inclusive resorts. This makes this destination less attractive for travelers who want to be immersed in Cuban culture—you won’t find much here. However, if your aim is to kick back on the beach for a few days, this is a good place to do it.

A 17-mile (27 km) causeway cuts across the Bahía de Perros (Bay of Dogs) and leads to the first of the islands, Cayo Coco. This causeway was originally built with refuse from a landfill, and a windows-down-ride across it can be a somewhat smelly affair. Nonetheless, you’ll enjoy lovely views of the ocean and mangroves during your drive to the islands.

Cayo Coco is a 140-square-mile (360 square km) island, and it has the second most hotel rooms in Cuba (the first is Veradero). There are currently 4,600 rooms here, and there are plans for an additional 22,000 rooms to be built across both islands. Most current hotels border Cayo Coco’s 13-miles (21 km) of beaches. The beaches – including Playa Flamenco, Playa Larga, and Playa Palma Real – have soft white sand and are scattered with lounge chairs. You can walk from beach to beach, but most travelers are content to hang out in the area in front of their hotel.

Cayo Guillermo is contiguous with Cayo Coco, and lays just to the west of it. It’s a much smaller island – only 7 square miles (18 square km) total – and has fewer hotels. The hotels are set along the 3-mile-long (5-km) Playa El Paso. Paragliding and kite-surfing is popular down here, and you’ll often see a handful of kite-surfers whipping across the waves at Playa El Paso. The best beach in the area is at the western tip of Cayo Guillermo—Playa Pilar is home to a lovely white-sand beach backed by dunes. The restaurant here serves local seafood and cold beer.

Hotels can arrange activities for guests, including snorkeling, diving, sport fishing, horseback riding, catamaran excursions, and banana-boat rides. This area also has good birding opportunities—158 species have been spotted, including migratory waterfowl, and flamingo colonies often hang out in the wetland areas on Cayo Guillermo. There’s a delfinario (dolphinarium) on Guillermo that has dolphin shows and opportunities to swim with dolphins.

Cayo Coco in a Nutshell

To give you a brief overview, Cayo Coco is the fourth largest island in Cuba, located in the Jardines del Rey Archipelago in the province of Ciego de Ávila. It’s a highly touristic spot, and much like the other cayos around it, is uninhabited by Cubans.

Tourist complexes dominate the island, and only hotel staff and guests have access to it. The hotels are mostly concentrated in the north, while the rest of the island (about 85%) is covered in mangroves, making it challenging to explore.

The mangroves are home to around 130 to 150 species of birds, including cormorants, pelicans, and flamingos. The island is named after the white ibis known as “coco” by the locals.

Weather in Cayo Coco

The weather in Cayo Coco, much like the rest of Cuba, can be divided into two major seasons: the dry season (late November – late April) and the rainy season (May – November). Here’s a breakdown of the temperatures and precipitation for each month:

During the dry season, temperatures in Cayo Coco are mild, but they get higher during the rainy season. The dry season is generally less rainy, while short-lived showers are common during the rainy season.

Getting to Cayo Coco

To get to Cayo Coco, you can take the 27-kilometer/17-mile causeway that connects the island to the main island of Cuba. Unfortunately, there is currently no bus service available. However, you can reach the island by car if you have one or by taxi. The journey from Moron costs around 40 CUC, while it’s approximately 60 CUC from Ciego de Avila.

Alternatively, many tourists opt to fly directly to the Cayo Coco airport. Cubana airline offers domestic flights that connect the island to Havana , while Air Canada operates air links (with a stopover) between Montreal and Cayo Coco.

Getting around Cayo Coco

Once you’re on the island, you can use a Transtur minibus to get around. They provide a daily shuttle service between the various hotels and points of interest on the island, costing 5 CUC per person per day.

Things to Do in Cayo Coco

Looking for things to do in Cayo Coco? The island offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation, water sports, and diving.

Diving Centers

Cayo Coco has two diving centers: Blue Coco Diving (located in the Pullman Cayo Coco Hotel) and Dive Center Marina Gaviota Cayo Coco. Both centers offer excursions to dive spots around Cayo Coco, and you can expect to pay around 40 CUC per dive (plus 10 CUC for equipment). Dive Center Marina Gaviota Cayo Coco also offers catamaran cruises, sea fishing excursions, and boat rentals.

Kitesurfing

Cayo Coco has several areas designated for kitesurfing, with a fee of 25 CUC to access them. Kitesurfing schools on the island include Kitesurf Cuba Travel – Horizon 5 and Coco-Kite, while three other schools are available on neighboring Cayo Guillermo. Rental and training prices range from 110 CUC for one hour of training to 830 CUC for 12 hours.

Horseback and Carriage Rides

Like many places in Cuba, you can explore Cayo Coco on horseback, with rides taking visitors to beaches and hiking trails. Carriage drivers also wait outside hotels, offering island tours at a cost of 5 to 30 CUC per person, depending on the ride’s duration and type.

Cayo Coco has two spas for travelers looking to unwind: Acuavida Spa Talaso and Heiwa Spa (Plaza Los Flamencos). Both spas feature a pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, and massage rooms.

Shopping Centers

The island has two shopping centers to satisfy the shopping urge: Centro Comercial La Gaviota (featuring a craft market and shops selling cigars, souvenirs, jewelry, and beach gear) and Plaza Los Flamencos (with a craft market, nightclub, spa, beauty salon, bowling, restaurant, jewelry and cigar store).

Cueva del Jabali

Cueva del Jabali is a cave converted into a cabaret and nightclub, offering a unique partying experience. Just watch out for the low ceiling!

Ocio Club Game Center

The Ocio Club Game Center offers a mini-golf course, billiard tables, arcade games, and a bar.

Cayo Guillermo, near Cayo Coco

If you’re looking to explore nearby areas, Cayo Guillermo is a 13-km2/3,000-acre islet connected to Cayo Coco by road. While similar to Cayo Coco, it’s a little more private and famous for its paradise-like Playa Pilar. So, sunbathing and water sports are on the program!

Hotels in Cayo Coco

Hotels in Cayo Coco are mostly located in the island’s northern part. Here are two recommended hotels that promise an unforgettable stay:

Melia Cayo Coco

Overlooking a private beach, the hotel offers overwater bungalow-style rooms and a wide range of amenities such as a tennis court, hair salon, souvenir shop, car and bicycle rental, gym, nightclub, and wellness area. The pool is also incredibly beautiful. However, note that the hotel is for adults only.

Pullman Cayo Coco

This modern hotel is located on the waterfront and offers all the facilities you need for a successful all-inclusive stay, including a pool, tennis court, gym, wellness area, restaurant, and diving center. Plus, children are welcome and have access to a dedicated play area.

Cayo-Coco-birds-1024x683

Final Word on Cayo Coco

When it comes to recommending or discouraging Cayo Coco, it’s a bit like Varadero – it depends on how you want to travel in Cuba, your expectations, and your priorities.

If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation with an emphasis on wellness and want an all-inclusive stay, then Cayo Coco is perfect for you. However, if you’re interested in cultural visits and discoveries, then it’s not the ideal choice.

It’s worth noting that Cayo Coco is isolated from the main Cuban tourist sites. If you want to stay in a beach resort but also explore the island’s cultural heritage, we recommend choosing Varadero instead. This way, you can easily take day trips to explore other parts of the island such as Trinidad or the Bay of Pigs.

To learn more about Varadero and explore it in-depth, check out the Captain’s detailed article.

Melia Cayo Coco offers four restaurants and bars, and incredible installations like a lovely pool and beach area . It also offers overwater bungalows, though they’re lagoon-facing rather than ocean-facing. Overall, the resort shines and stands out from the pack for its stellar location, friendly service, and great food.

A four-star resort that is part of the Melia family of brands, Tryp Cayo Coco has long been a beloved mainstay among resorts in Cayo Coco. With just over 500 rooms, it is quite a large resort and has the amenities and activities to support it, though it doesn’t feel overwhelming or overrun. It’s a popular all-inclusive option for both couples and families.

Cayo Coco, Cuba

Discover the paradisiacal cayo coco, a tropical island in a dream landscape in the archipelago jardines del rey, cuba.

Cayo Coco, Cuba

Cayo Coco ( Coco Key ) i s located in the Jardines del Rey  ( King's Gardens ) archipelago and is the fourth largest island in Cuba. It is connected to the main island of Cuba by an artificial road called the pedraplén , a road built over the sea. It is an exceptional work of engineering that in spite of crossing the sea is recognized by its respect for the environment since it respects the marine currents. In addition, the key is connected to   Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Romano .

Cayo Coco

As tourism grew in Cuba , this cayo specialized in more luxurious and exclusive tourism such as the all-inclusive hotel resorts that are currently the only accommodation on the island.

You will not leave Cayo Coco without experiencing a true tropical paradise . Its beaches are among the best and most impressive in the world . With fine white sand combined with the warm, crystalline waters of the Caribbean, no one is left indifferent to them. The beaches of Cayo Coco make anyone in this idyllic place want to stay forever .

What Can I Do in  Cayo Coco?

Flora of Cayo Coco

During your stay in Cayo Coco , you will be able to enjoy pleasures such as the magnificent view of its fascinating native flora and fauna, take part in different types of activities such as the Glass Bottom Boat tour or the visit to the R ocarena Climbing Center .

The Parque Natural El Bagá  is a gigantic ecological project on the cayo. The Cuban government intends to merge two different, apparently contradictory areas, such as a lucrative real estate movement and the recovery and conservation of the area's environment.

If one of your passions is a sport, more specifically water sport, while visiting Cayo Coco you can enjoy deep-sea fishing , snorkelling or diving in search of its marvellous seabed.

Seabed of Cayo Coco

The seabed of Cayo Coco is undoubtedly the highlight of this Caribbean jewel. You will be able to see with extreme clarity the endemic fish of the zone that overflow with colour, thanks to the purity of the water. Cayo Coco is considered one of the best points of diving of all Cuba and of the world.

You can hire diving material and a guide at the Centro de Buceo Cayo Coco ( Diving Center ) where they will provide you with everything you need to enjoy the beautiful sea beds. You have the option to choose different points of immersion, like La Jaula , in great depth with species like gorgonias; Las Coloradas , where you will be able to find caves and cracks ; or in Casasa to enjoy the coralline barrier .

This will not be the only sport you can do during your visit to the island. You will also be able to visit the Rocarena Climbing Center , where you will have a different level climbing circuit . From the most basic, where you will be able to get started in the world of climbing, to more advanced levels where you will be able to test your climbing skills.

The warm turquoise waters that surround the coasts of this part of the Caribbean will encourage you not to stray from them thanks to such appealing activities as boat rides . On windy days, you can practice other sports such as windsurfing or kitesurfing .

On the other hand, if you simply like to enjoy the peaceful landscape, you can join the Glass Bottom Boat , a tour in which you will visit the most sheltered places on the island, enjoying all its beauty. This boat is made up of a large glass window at the bottom . Through the glass, you will be able to observe all the local aquatic fauna in its greatest splendor. If you venture even closer, you will have the chance to grab some goggles and a snorkel and dive right in.

What are the best beaches in Cayo Coco?

Delfinario Cayo Guillermo

The beaches are the main attraction of this beautiful key due to its turquoise waters and fine white sand of coral origin. In addition, due to the virgin character of these places, it is common to find a great variety of fauna. Dolphins are abundant in this area and you might be lucky enough to have them playing and jumping close to you. If you don't manage to spot one, you will also have the chance to take a specific excursion to play with the dolphins.

Among the most beautiful beaches of Cayo Coco are Playa de las Coloradas , which received the recognition of environmental beach for its great ecological management, and Playa Flamencos , with a lot of hotels nearby and ideal for water sports . In Flamencos beach it is common to find large groups of beautiful pink flamingos gathering in the shallow sea.

In addition, another striking beach, this time because of its large size, is Playa Larga , which stays true to its name with 2.5 km of white sand.

All of them stand out for their virgin character and have been very well preserved despite the growth of tourism.

Playa Pilar

If you are in Cayo Coco it is necessary that a visit to Cayo Guillermo  must be among your plans since it is just as impressive the many heavenly beaches that you can enjoy here. The extensive Playa El Paso and Playa Pilar , a real jewel of the Caribbean, deserve special mention.

How Do I Get to Cayo Coco?

There are several ways to get to this beautiful key. Taking a boat or a plane can be the fastest depending on where you are in Cuba . However, the main and most common way is to use the pedraplén   or a road built over the Caribbean. You can get there from Morón  in about an hour, while from Havana  it will be a 7-hour drive.

In order to shorten the trip or if you are in Havana and want to visit Cayo Coco , one option is to spend the night in Trinidad . This is a very common option in Cuba , so you have the option of staying in a private home to connect fully with the Cuban culture. There are also options of hotels with more services if you prefer more comfortable accommodation.

The decision to stay in Trinidad as a first stop to the cayos is a very good one since you could take the opportunity to visit some of the attractions of the area. If you have time, we recommend the Parque Natural de Topes de Collantes , a beautiful park where you can connect with nature and explore spectacular waterfalls. If you stay more than one night in Trinidad you should not miss the city of Cienfuegos , known as the pearl of southern Cuba , and its French colonial architecture.

What are the Accommodations in Cayo Coco?

What To Look For When Choosing The Right All-Inclusive Resort In Cuba

  • Choose a resort known for great staff and service, like Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo. Spacious rooms make it even better.
  • If traveling with family, consider family-friendly resorts like Paradisus Rio Del Oro, where kids can have fun while parents relax.
  • For plenty of activities and a family-friendly atmosphere, check out Melia Varadero. Rent bikes or go diving, plus lots of kids' activities.

A lot of people choose to visit Cuba each year, and that is not surprising, as the country is home to incredible hidden gems and offers many family-friendly resorts . Cuba is a cool place to visit, and it's possible to create a perfect itinerary to explore the island .

When it comes to choosing a place to stay, there are tons of options. Picking a Cuban resort to book can be hard, as there's so much to consider. Here are some of the things you should consider when choosing the right all-inclusive resort in Cuba.

UPDATE: 2023/12/3 18:00 EST BY LUANA FERREIRA

More About The Best All-Inclusive Resorts In Cuba

There are many questions that pop up when one starts planning a trip to Cuba. While many travelers decide to have a full immersion stay at the famous casas (local houses), others still want the experience of booking an all-inclusive hotel on the island. It's no secret that Cuba is a place like no other, so this list was updated to include more things future visitors should check before booking their hotel.

Choose A Resort That Is Known For Having A Great Staff

Grand muthu cayo guillermo receives top ratings for its service.

One thing that is very important for all businesses is having a staff that is friendly, as well as a staff that knows what they are doing. Check out reviews to see which resorts are most known for having great and competent staff members.

According to Trip Advisor, one of the all-inclusive resorts in Cuba that is known for having great service is Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo . The rooms there are pretty spacious as well, which only makes the place seem that much better.

  • How to get there: Via a small causeway connecting the main island to Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo
  • Distance from Havana: 343 miles

Explore Family-Friendly Resort Amenities

Paradisus rio del oro offers kid-friendly excursions and amenities.

There are a lot of people who dream about having vacations that do not involve any children. On the other hand, there are lots of people who want to take their kids with them when they go on vacation, so that is why there are some family-friendly all-inclusive resorts in Cuba.

One of the Cuban resorts that is meant for those who have little ones is Paradisus Rio Del Oro . This is a nice spot in Cuba that gives parents the chance to relax while their kids have some fun in the sun (assuming that the sun is out at that time).

  • Address: 447M+HRX, Guardalavaca, Cuba
  • Closest airport: Frank Paìs International Airport (Holguin)

Choose A Resort With Tons of Activities

Melia varadero offers on-site activities and plenty to do nearby.

Varadero is one of the best beaches to visit in Cuba , so it's no surprise it also offers the highest number of resorts in the country. While some people prefer to have vacations that are a bit more on the relaxed side, others prefer to go to places that have lots of fun activities.

According to TripAdvisor, one of the all-inclusive resorts in Cuba that fits these criteria is Melia Varadero , which also happens to be a really family-friendly place as well.

There is no shortage of fun things to do there. If the guests at that place do not feel like relaxing throughout their entire stay, they can rent bikes, or go diving. There are also lots of activities that kids can take part in as well.

  • Address: 5QGR+8VJ, Carretera de Las Morlas, Varadero, Cuba

Check Out Resorts With Meals Included (At No Extra Charge)

Places like royalton hicacos varadero resort & spa include breakfast.

There are some resorts that include lots of amenities at no extra cost, but there are also a lot of them that charge extra money for certain things. In addition, not all resorts have the same kind of policy when it comes to stuff like this, so travelers will want to see what each all-inclusive resort in Cuba includes in the prices they advertise.

After all, no one likes to have to dish out more money than they had originally planned.

Some Cuban resorts offer their customers a free breakfast, and one of those places is Royalton Hicacos Varadero Resort & Spa . A free breakfast is always an awesome thing to have, but not all resorts will offer it.

  • Address: 5RWP+J3, Carretera Las Morlas Km. 15 Varadero, Cuba,, Varadero, Cuba

Review Cleanliness And Comfort Ratings

Iberostar bella costa offers a pristine stay.

This might sound surprising to some people who have never been to a resort before, but the truth is that some of them are simply not as nice as they appear to be. In advertisements, most all-inclusive resorts appear to be clean so that they seem more appealing to travelers, but in reality, they can be dirty, which has caused some people to be very disappointed.

Many people pay lots of money to visit places like this, so they usually (and understandably) want something clean. According to some of the reviews on tripadvisor.com, Iberostar Bella Costa is the place to go for people looking to find an all-inclusive resort in Cuba where cleanliness matters a lot to the staff members.

  • Address: Carretera de Las Américas Km. 3 ½. Varadero, Cuba

Traveling Without Kids? Look For An Adults-Only Spot

Melia cayo coco is an adults-only resort.

Travelers seeking calm days within a paradisiacal cay should check the adult-only Melia Cayo Coco , as they only receive guests at least 18 years old.

Former clients praise this place for its caring staff, who go the extra mile to make their stay memorable. They also highlight the resort's architecture, decoration, buffet, and pastel colors in the rooms.

Another plus of staying in the Melia Cayo Coco is that guests can enjoy the day use in Cayo Guillermo.

  • How to get there: There is a 17-mile causeway connecting Cayo Coco to Cuba
  • Distance from Havana: 322 miles

Prospective travelers can also check out other adult-only resorts in Cuba .

Look For Top-Rated Food Options

Paradisus princesa del mar has mouthwatering dishes that are highly rated.

Eating in Cuba is a feast for the senses. From the traditional Ropa Vieja , to the Yuca Con Mojo and the plátanos fritos. While outstanding restaurants serve local dishes in every tourist city, the food served in the resorts often receives criticism from guests.

Those seeking great food within a resort in Cuba shouldn't hesitate to book the Paradisus Princesa Del Mar Resort & Spa . This place has several restaurants specializing in different cuisines, including Cuban, Japanese (the favorite among guests) and Mediterranean.

  • Address : 5VX9+8M, Auropista Sur, Carr. Las Morlas, Km. 19 5, Varadero 42200, Cuba
  • Distance from Havana: 90 miles

Choose A Strategic (And Beach-Adjacent) Location

Valetín varadero el patriarca has excellent views.

While the idea of spending the days enjoying the hotel's amenities and the closest beach is tempting, one shouldn't miss the chance to explore the Cuban lifestyle. It's possible to merge the best of both best words by choosing a fantastic hotel in a strategic location.

The Valentín Varadero El Patriarca is within a few minutes walk from popular restaurants and attractions such as the Cueva de Ambrosio. The hotel also offers access to a crystal-clear beach, which makes the experience more memorable.

  • Address : 6V22+R75, Varadero, Cuba

All-inclusive resorts can make a trip to Cuba an epic, memorable experience. Follow these tips (and maybe book one of the mentioned resorts) for an unforgettable time!

Cuba opts to scrap visa regime for Chinese nationals, says Cuban tourism minister

CAYO-COCO /Cuba/, May 5. /TASS/. Cuba has unilaterally decided to cancel the visa regime for Chinese citizens, who hold regular passports, Cuban Minister of Tourism Juan Carlos Garcia Granda said on Sunday.

"In view of efforts aimed at promoting trade and economic ties with China, particularly in the sphere of tourism, I am pleased to announce my country's decision to approve the cancellation of the visa regime for Chinese citizens holding ordinary passports," the minister said speaking at the 2024 International Tourism Fair, hosted by the Cuban island of Cayo Coco.

Minister Garcia Granda announced this decision in view of the fact that China will be the guest of honor during the next International Tourism Fair, which will be hosted by the Cuban capital of Havana in 2025.

"We [Cuba and China] agree on the need of forming conditions and a favorable climate for strengthening ties in various spheres, including the tourism development," the Cuban tourism minister added.
