In 2023, Cambodia once again began welcoming all tourists and travellers back into the country with no COVID-19 vaccination, testing or quarantine requirements.

The Cambodia Visa on Arrival is now available as it was before the pandemic.

Getting a tourist visa for Cambodia ‘The Kingdom of Wonder’ is one of the most straightforward immigration processes we’ve experienced so far when travelling. UK citizens and many other nationalities can get a 30-day Cambodia visa on arrival (VOA).

It should be noted that some ASEAN nationalities are exempt from needing a Cambodia visa for a specified number of days; whilst some nationalities aren’t eligible for a Cambodia visa on arrival and have to obtain one in advance. More details can be found on the Royal Embassy of Cambodia website.

Each time we’ve visited Cambodia, either on holiday or to live in Siem Reap as Digital Nomads , we’ve gotten a VOA. This post is based on those experiences, validated with up-to-date information from the Royal Embassy of Cambodia.

How to Get a Cambodia Visa on Arrival

A Cambodia visa on arrival can be obtained on arrival at Siem Reap or Phnom Penh International Airports or at several land-border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, the exact checkpoints are in the Royal Embassy of Cambodia Visa FAQs .

Types of Cambodia Visa on Arrival

There are two types of Cambodia visa on arrival. The different Cambodia visas on arrival costs a different amount:

Cambodia Tourist Visa (T)

The single-entry Cambodia Tourist visa (T-class) costs $30 (£23.30), is valid for 30 days and can be renewed once for a further 30 days without leaving the country.

Cambodia Ordinary Visa (E)

If you know you’ll be staying in Cambodia for longer than 60 days, don’t get a tourist visa. A renewable Cambodia Ordinary visa (E-class), also known as a Cambodia Business visa is a better option. This single entry Cambodia E-visa on arrival costs $35 (£27.50) and is again valid for 30 days, after which you can extend it.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Requirements

To get a Cambodia visa on arrival you will need:

• A passport that is valid for six months or more.
• Two empty pages in your passport.
• A completed Cambodia visa application form; supplied on the plane, or, at the airport or land border crossing.
• The visa fee mentioned above must be in US dollars.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Process

The process for getting a Cambodia visa on arrival before heading off to your hotel, hostel or guesthouse couldn’t be simpler. You just need to hand the immigration staff your completed Cambodia visa on arrival form, passport and Cambodia visa fee. They’ll process your application in about five to ten minutes whilst you wait, then give your passport back. It will have the visa inside and you’ll be good to go.

If you’re planning on staying for longer than two months be sure to double check your you’ve been given the correct visa. An Ordinary (E-Class) visa should have an eight-digit number preceded by ‘EI’ on the left of the visa.

Overstaying Your Cambodia Visa

There is a $10 (£7.80) per day charge if you overstay your Cambodia visa, which you’ll have to pay when you leave the country, you may also be charged for a visa extension, but this doesn’t always happen.

It is permitted to overstay for up to 30 days; if you overstay for longer you’ll not only be liable for the daily overstay charge, but you could also possibly be imprisoned, deported or face a ban on future travel to Cambodia.

Cambodia Visa Extensions and Work Permits

Tourist (T-Class) visas can be extended for one month without leaving the country, for subsequent renewals, you have to leave Cambodia and return in order to renew it.

Ordinary (E-Class) visas can be extended for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months by getting one of the new set of four E-class visas introduced in 2017. The 1 and 3-month extensions are single entry and the 6 and 12-month extensions are multiple entry .

Since September 4th 2017 the laws on long-term visa extensions have changed and work permits are now needed to renew the 6-month and 12-month Ordinary (E-Class) visas. The 1 and 3-month (single entry) extensions can, however, still be extended indefinitely. Nice Information.

I am on a cruise visiting one city (Sihanoukville). I believe I (U.S. citizen) need a visa, but it sounds like I cannot get an evisa as we won’t be arriving at one of the places where it is accepted. I’m wondering what options are available to get a non-evisa document to be able to cruise. I imagine the cruise line will not let me embark without an appropriate visa.

EVisas are only available if you arrive into Siem Reap or Phnom Penh international airports. So yes you are correct you can’t get an evisa if arriving into a seaport.

However, usually, the cruise company will take care of your visa application, so I would speak to them in the first instance.

If they do not arrange it for you – you have the following options:

Cambodia Visa on Arrival: Cruise ship passengers can get a visa-on-arrival at Cambodian seaports. This should be the same Visa on Arrival process as in my post

Cambodia Transit Visa (D): IThe short-term transit visa (D category) is available to tourists visiting the country on a cruise ship. It allows you to stay in the country for up to 96 hours. You can apply for this visa through a consulate or authorized travel agencies. (I assume your Cruise company)

I am in the same boat (pun intended), is there a way to get a VOA in advance to avoid any complications with the cruise company when boarding the ship?

As far as I know no, the e-Visa in Ruth’s comment above and my reply is the ‘online in advance’ visa on arrival which you cannot get in advance if arriving into a Seaport.

So you’d need to use one of the other options I mentioned in my reply to Ruth.

Hi, I’m only making a transfer in Cambodia. Will I need a visa?

You’ll only need a visa if you’re going through immigration and leaving the airport. If you’re just transiting through the airport you should not need a visa.

If I apply for visa extension the next day or a few days after arriving will the new visa validity start counting from the moment they give it to me or after the ordinary visa 30 days have passed? Thank you

Are there any other costs? I was going to do Evisa but the cost is $109, do you know why there is such a cost variation?

No they are the only costs. Evisa will always cost much more as they will add on a fee for doing it for you. There’s absolutely no need to do it that way as it’s completely straight forward to just get a visa on arrival!

Cambodia is currently one of the most open and visitor-friendly countries in Southeast Asia following COVID-19 travel restrictions.

As of 17 March 2022, visa-on-arrival has been reinstated for most visitors and all COVID-19 travel-related testing requirements have been lifted.

Do I need a visa to visit Cambodia?

The simple answer is yes: most nationalities need a visa to enter the Kingdom of Cambodia, including citizens of Australia, the European Union, the UK and the US. The main exceptions are citizens from the Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) neighbors who are granted visa-free access; these countries include Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Some other Asian nationalities, including Japan and South Korea, may also enter Cambodia without a visa in most circumstances. Citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Sudan need to make advance arrangements for a Cambodian visa.

A 1-month tourist visa costs US$30; easily extendable business visas cost US$35. Online tourist e-visas cost US$36, which includes a US$6 processing charge.

Do I need a photograph?

Photos are no longer required with visas for those arriving at airports, although some land crossings still require them and charge US$2–3 if you do not have one.

What about visas during the time of COVID-19?

Cambodia suspended its visa-on-arrival program in June 2020 but made the bold decision to reinstate it with immediate effect from 17 March 2022. It is also possible to apply for a Cambodian e-visa online .

It is also possible to apply for longer-stay visas at Cambodian embassies around the world . 

What you need to know when for applying for a Cambodian visa

• Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your planned entry or you won’t be allowed to enter the country.
• Cambodian visas take up an entire passport page – unless you are entering on a tourist e-visa, which takes up about a quarter-page.

Are there any special entry requirements related to COVID-19?

Cambodia blew the doors off quarantined Southeast Asia on November 15, 2021, when the government announced an unexpected total reopening for fully vaccinated travelers. Some pre-departure and arrival testing remained in place until recently but the requirement for COVID-19 travel testing was lifted in a bold move towards normality from March 2022. Visitors are free to travel anywhere in Cambodia without the need to quarantine and there are no curfews in place anywhere in the country.

Unvaccinated travelers are still required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in a pre-booked hotel or a designated government facility. 

Can I extend my Cambodian visa?

Those seeking work in Cambodia should opt for a business visa, as it is easily extendable for longer periods, including multiple entries and exits. A tourist visa can be extended only once and only for 1 month and does not allow for re-entry. Overstaying a visa currently costs US$10 a day.

Visa extensions are issued at the large immigration office located directly across the road from Phnom Penh International Airport. Extensions are easy to arrange, taking just a couple of days. The cost is US$45 for 1 month (for both tourist and business visas), US$75 for 3 months, US$155 for 6 months and US$285 for 1 year. Some hotels and travel agents in Phnom Penh can help with arrangements for a small fee.

Where can I enter Cambodia?

Cambodia has three international gateways for arrival by air – Phnom Penh , Siem Reap and Sihanoukville – and a large number of land borders with neighboring Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. Formalities at Cambodia’s international airports are generally smooth.

Crossing at land borders is usually easy as well, though immigration officers may try to extract some extra cash, either for the visa itself or via some other scam. Crossing from Thailand, immigration officials may demand payment in baht and round up the exchange rate considerably in their favor. Overcharging is also an issue at the Laos border, but not usually a problem at Vietnam borders. Arranging an e-visa in advance can help avoid any hassles or surcharges.

Departure from Cambodia during COVID-19

You do not need a PCR test to leave Cambodia, though you should check whether a “Fit-to-Fly” PCR test or rapid antigen is required for your onward stop, whether a stay in another country, transit through another country or return to your home country.

There are currently COVID-19 testing labs in several cities around Cambodia, including multiple testing labs in Phnom Penh, one lab in Siem Reap, one lab in Sihanoukville and one lab in Battambang . In practice, it is easiest to work with the labs in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, so we recommend making one of these cities your departure destination from Cambodia if a Fit-to-Fly certificate is required.

Great news! As of November 15, 2021, vaccinated foreign tourists can enter Cambodia without quarantine!

Here is what you need to know to enter Cambodia as a tourist in 2021:

Getting a cambodia tourist (t) visa.

Visa on Arrival in Cambodia remains suspended . If you are not in possession of a multi-entry Visa Extension of Stay (EOS), then you need to apply for a Visa in Advance from a Cambodian Embassy or consulate. The criteria varies from Embassy to Embassy, so check with them directly.

Tourists can also apply for the tourist e-Visa (electronic online Tourist Visa) at  www.evisa.gov.kh or through visa services such as iVisa.com .

Visa Exempt Entry for ASEAN passport holders has been reintroduced.

Cambodia Visa Fee

The cost for a Tourist (T) Visa is $36 USD.

How long can you stay in Cambodia on a (T) Visa?

The Tourist (T) visa allows you to stay in Cambodia for 30 days. You must enter Cambodia within 90 days of when your (T) Visa is issued.

Where can you enter Cambodia?

You can fly into Phnom Penh International Airport and Sihanoukville International Airport . Cambodia’s land and sea borders remain closed to entry for foreigners without prior authorization.

Requirements to Enter Cambodia as a Tourist in 2021

Preflight PCR Test ALL Passengers, including children and babies, must have a printed medical certificate indicating a negative Coronavirus (COVID-19) PCR test conducted no more than 72 hours before arrival into Cambodia. PCR test result documentation must be original (not a copy) and must have a wet ink signature and stamp. See the Covid-19 Travel Medical Certificate Template that you can bring to your doctor . You should also carry color copies of your PCR test results just in case.

Proof of Medical Insurance Foreign tourists must p urchase a local health insurance package for COVID-19 treatment from   Forte Insurance Company .  The cost is $90 for a $50,000 policy valid for 20 days.

We also recommend having additional insurance either through your home country that covers you abroad or getting travel insurance such as World Nomads or Safety Wing . It is recommended to print all of your insurance documentation in color and to carry multiple copies.

Covid Vaccination Card/Certificate All fully vaccinated travelers need to present their vaccination card/certificate in order to be eligible for the reduced 7-day quarantine period. You will need to present: • Confirmation of complete vaccination status • Final dose is required to have been administered at least 14 days prior to arrival Your vaccine card/certificate must state: • Travellers Name • Type of Vaccine • Date(s) of vaccinations Note: Vaccine card/certificate must be hard copy (not digital on phone/tablet). If it is a card then make a color photocopy. If it is digital then print it out in color. If your original card/certificate does not have color then don’t worry about this. 

Quarantine Requirements

Tourists entering Cambodia on a (T) Visa who are fully vaccinated DO NOT need to quarantine .

Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated tourists must quarantine for 14 days . In order to apply for a Cambodia Tourist (T) Visa, passengers must pre-book a quarantine hotel .

You will need to book your quarantine hotel in advance. The five approved Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) hotels in Cambodia are: Sokhha Phnom Penh Hotel and Residence ,  Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh , Raffles Hotel Le Royal Phnom Penh, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, Himawari Hotel Apartments . 

These are the only ASQ hotel options for Tourist (T) Visa travelers. These hotels are priced between $1,200 and $1,600 for a 7-day quarantine.

You can purchase a Cambodia Visa On Arrival when you arrive at the airport in Cambodia or at land border crossings from Thailand, Vietnam or Laos.

If you’re the type of person who likes to plan ahead, you can get your Cambodia visa before you leave on your trip . This can be done at a Cambodia embassy or consulate abroad . You can also purchase an electronic visa (e-Visa) for Cambodia through an online visa service .

Getting Your Cambodia Visa on Arrival

Note: A majority of countries can get a Visa On Arrival in Cambodia, but some cannot. There are currently nine countries that are visa-exempt, meaning they do not require a Cambodia visa when staying for 30 days or less. Types of Cambodia Visas

There are two types of Cambodia visas you can get on arrival. Check the box on your Cambodia Visa On Arrival form to choose which visa type you would like to get.

TOURIST (T) Visa ( $30 USD as of May 2019.) ORDINARY (E) Visa ( $35 USD as of May 2019 ) .

Which Type of Cambodia Visa Should You Get?

TOURIST (T) VISA If you’re coming to Cambodia for less than 2 months in total, you should get a TOURIST (T) VISA . This is a 1-month single-entry visa that you can extend one time for one month without leaving the country. The cost of a TOURIST (T) VISA is USD $30. 

ORDINARY (E) VISA If you are coming to Cambodia for longer than 2 months in total, you will need to get an ORDINARY (E)  VISA. This is a 1-month single-entry visa that you can extend for an additional 1, 3, 6, or 12 months without leaving the country. The 1 and 3-month visas are single-entry, the 6 and 12-month visas are multiple-entry, meaning you can leave Cambodia and return using the same visa. The cost of an   ORDINARY (E) VISA is USD $35.

What You Will Need to Get Your Cambodia Visa On Arrival

The following applies for Visa On Arrival for both the Cambodia TOURIST (T) VISA and ORDINARY (E) VISA.

1. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the arrival date.

2. Two free pages in your passport (visa takes up a whole page).

3. A Visa On Arrival application form provided at the airport or land border crossing.

4. One recent passport photograph (4 x 6) . It is now possible to have your passport photo scanned to use on your visa at the Phnom Penh International Airport. There is a small fee ( $2 USD at the time of writing ) for this service, paid at the visa application counter.

5. Visa Fee: A cash payment of  $30 USD for a TOURIST (T) VISA or $35 USD for an Ordinary (E) VISA.

6. At the airport/ land crossing: The Cambodia visa application form will be given to you on the airplane or bus, or you can pick it up inside the airport or at the land border crossing. You’ll need your passport, the application form, passport photo, and payment in USD cash. The staff at the visa application counter will process your application and your passport will be returned to you with your full-page visa inside.

How long it takes depends on how many people are there at the time of your arrival. Once you turn in your paperwork you should get your passport back with your visa in it within 10-15 minutes. You can then proceed through immigration.

Getting a Cambodia Visa at a Cambodia Embassy or Consulate Abroad

If you are from a country that requires you to get a Cambodia visa before you travel, or if you just prefer to have your physical Cambodia visa in your passport before your trip, then you can head to a Cambodia Embassy or Consulate abroad to apply for a Cambodia visa there. You can find a list of Cambodia Embassies and Consulates here .

The requirements to get your Cambodia visa at a Cambodia Embassy or Consulate will likely be the same as above for the Visa On Arrival. Just to be sure, call, email, or check their website ahead of time before you make the trip. That way you can ensure you have all of the paperwork, the right Cambodia visa photo size, and anything else that might be required for the type of Cambodia visa you are applying for.

You don’t want to go all the way there only to find out that you are missing something and have to go back again! There may be different requirements for citizens of different countries, so it’s better to check before you go.

If you do not live close to a Cambodia Embassy or Consulate, then you may be able to send your passport in by mail. In this case, be sure to start the process early so there is plenty of time to get your passport and visa back before your trip.

Getting a Cambodia e-Visa (Electronic Visa) Online

Another option that is available for citizens of many countries is to get an e-Visa for Cambodia before your trip.

To get an e-Visa for Cambodia all you need to do is fill out the online e-Visa application and make the payment either by credit/debit card or Paypal.

You will receive the documents you need for your Cambodia visa by email. The e-Visa does have a service fee, but you are paying for the convenience of not having to deal directly with a Cambodia Embassy. When you arrive in Cambodia you’ll present your passport and the documents that were emailed to you at immigration. It is a simple and straightforward process.

Overstaying Your Cambodia Visa

If you overstay your Cambodia visa, you will be charged $10 per day starting from the date of expiration  (as of August 2017). The fine is payable to immigration when you leave the country.

If you are overstaying your visa for three days or less, it may be cheaper to pay the overstay charge than get a visa extension. Technically you may be charged for a visa extension on your way out of the country, but this usually doesn’t happen.

Extending Your Cambodia Visa

TOURIST (T) VISAS can be extended for one month without leaving the country.

ORDINARY (E) VISAS can be extended for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months without leaving the country.

Double check your visa on arrival.

When purchasing your Cambodia Visa On Arrival at airports or land crossings, be sure to double check your visa when you get it. An ORDINARY (E) Visa should have a series of 8 numbers on the left-hand side of the visa. Ensuring you received the correct visa will save you a lot of trouble and money down the road if you are staying in Cambodia longer than 2 months.

Hi, I am visiting Cambodia as part of a tour with a UK holiday company (I am British). We are travelling by boat from Cao Lanh in Vietnam along the Mekong into Cambodia and landing at Phnom Penh. Do you know if I can use an evisa for this entry to Cambodia as the online application form only lists 7 ports and 3 of those are airports – which port would it be if I can? Otherwise, would an on arrival visa be availabvle as I don’t really want to have to travel to London for a normal visa.

I have a 30-day E (work) visa. I’d like to renew for 3-6 months when the 30 days is up. I’m in Battambang.

A couple of questions, if I may.

* I’d like to avoid going back down to Phnom Penh to renew. Can I go to Immigration in Siem Reap to do this?

* Failing that: could a travel agent in Battambang do the job? (Send passport to Immigration, etc.)

* Some say you need a letter from your employer to renew a work visa- is that true? (If so, what does the letter need to say?)

Hi John, thanks for your questions. From our understanding of the current laws, it’s your first time visiting Cambodia you can extend your Ordinary (E) visa for 6 months. If it is not your first time in Cambodia you can only extend your Ordinary (E) visa for 3 months. You will not need a letter from an employer to do this as the (E) visa is not a working visa. If you want to work in Cambodia your job will need to help you obtain a Work Permit. If you have a work permit through an employer you can get a 12-month (E) visa. Hope that helps!

Really helpful article – I actually really like the approach to overstaying your visa, where you’re charged a fee, as opposed to other countries who arrest and issue bans against entering the country again. Good to know about the different visas on offer for travelers, I think my first trip would be less than 2 months so the tourist visa would work for me first up. Who knows though maybe I’ll fall in love and need a new visa for a longer stay the next time!

Thanks for the helpful post! We haven’t been to Cambodia yet, but it’s on our list! I think it’s a similar process to Thailand? (in saying that, it’s been a LONG time since we went to Thailand, so I could be wrong!). I think it’s funny that you are only fined $10/day if you overstay the visa. Hi I just passed over the border from Vietnam on a very remote border (phenm den ) with no usd just vnd ! Make sure you have usd !!! We had to pay 8700000 vnd (38usd) nothing we could do About it even though we tried ! Plus no ATMs even close to here or transport some have reported spending up to 60 usd taxi we however have been using local bus but it is hard work very hard work ! Some times money is just not worth fighting for

Watch out for that health check tooo WTF ahhh you have fever sick you sick you pay ( if this happens tell them backpack is heavy hard work hard work usally does it !

But Cambodia is amazing ! Smile laugh point and wave when things are not going to plan and scammers don’t back down just remember they are poor you don’t won’t the cheapest rate you won’t a fair rate !

I got a tourist visa on arrival when I entered Cambodia by land from Laos. We had to pay an extra 1$ for a medical check (a form) and 35$ instead of the official 30$ for the visa (corruption). I stayed only one month so I didn’t need to extend it, but I’ll keep the information for the future. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Cheers for your comment! 🙂 Do you remember which border-crossing you went through from Laos? We have been scammed (twice!) at the Poipet border between Thailand and Cambodia and ended up paying more than the Cambodia visa fee. We live and learn, but sometimes it’s hard to avoid.

I don’t remember the name of the border, but if I remember well there is only one land border between Cambodia and Laos. In Laos you usually leave from the 4000 islands and you enter Cambodia through Stung Treng. And yes, even if you know them in advance these scams are difficult to avoid 🙁

Hi Channy! I think the easiest thing to do is get a new visa, either get a tourist visa or an ordinary (E) visa, when you are back in October. Otherwise it will be quite costly to get an extension if you aren’t going to be in Cambodia between July and October. Where is your passport from? That may make a difference.

Visa Requirements for Cambodia

Any trip through Southeast Asia almost always includes a stop in Cambodia to visit the legendary temples of Angkor Wat , but to get there, you'll likely need a visa to enter the country. A visa is required for almost all foreign nationals coming into Cambodia, except for citizens of the neighboring countries Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar, and the Philippines.

Luckily, Cambodia offers an easy-to-obtain e-visa for tourists that you can apply for and download online. The e-visa allows visitors to enter the country one time for a period of up to 30 days , so if you plan to leave Cambodia and come back, you'll need to apply for an additional visa.

If you don't have time to apply for the e-visa—it can take up to three business days for processing—you can also get a visa on arrival when you arrive at the airport or cross the border from a neighboring country. Visas on arrival are also available for business travelers and individuals with Cambodian ancestry.

Tourist e-Visa

Without a doubt, the easiest way to enter Cambodia as a tourist is by applying online for the e-visa, known as the T class visa. It's a simple process that takes a few minutes to complete and while it can take up to three business days to be processed, most applicants receive their visas via email within 24 hours. In fact, the most complicated part is finding the official Cambodian visa webpage , since a Google search brings up several results for third-party companies that take more time and charge more money for the same visa (it can also be done via an app on your Apple or Android smartphone). If you're paying more than $36, you're on the wrong webpage.

Tourist visas allow visitors to enter the country once and stay for up to 30 days. They cannot be renewed, so you'll need to leave the country and apply for a new visa if you want to stay.

Visa Fees and Application

Once you're on the Cambodian visa webpage, the application itself is easy to fill out and very straightforward. Apart from entering your personal information on your passport, there are only a few other things you'll need.

• You'll need to upload a digital photo or scan of your passport as well as a digital photo of yourself on a neutral background. In both cases, a photo taken with your cellphone usually works.
• You'll also need to choose your port of entry, which is likely either the Siem Reap Airport or Phnom Penh Airport.
• If you'll be crossing via land from Thailand, Vietnam, or Laos, you'll have to choose the border crossing checkpoint you plan to use, since the visa is only valid for the crossing you indicate in the application.
• The standard visa fee of $30 is payable at the time of application, plus a $6 processing fee.
• Even though it's a little more expensive and you could save $6 by getting the visa on arrival, immigration is notoriously slow and you could be waiting for hours until you're allowed to pass through. The e-visa streamlines the process and is well worth the small additional fee.
• Most applicants are emailed their visas within 24 hours of submitting the application, although it can take up to three business days.
• When you get the email with your visa, it will instruct you to print two copies. You'll need one for entering Cambodia and another one for leaving, so don't overlook it.

Tourist Visa on Arrival

Tourist visas, or T class visas, can also be obtained on arrival in Cambodia. It's slightly cheaper than applying for the e-visa, but long lines and sluggish processing for visas on arrival are the norm, so the e-visa is usually your best bet. If you need to get to Cambodia in a hurry and don't have time to wait for the e-visa (it usually takes under 24 hours to process but can take up to three business days), then the visa on arrival is a convenient fallback.

E-visas are accepted at all of the airports in Cambodia, but not at every land border crossing . If you are crossing the border in a vehicle from Thailand, Vietnam, or Laos, you should confirm that your port of entry accepts e-visas ; if they don't, you'll need to request the visa on arrival.

The visa application is nearly identical to the e-visa, but you'll download and print the form instead of filling it out online.

• Apart from the application, you'll need your passport and a physical passport photo, so make sure you have one before landing in Cambodia.
• The visa fee is $30 which must be paid in cash in U.S. dollars. Try to have the exact amount on hand, because it's unlikely you'll get change back. The airports have ATMs available but they don't always have cash available, so don't rely on them.
• If you're crossing at a land border, expect to pay another $1–$20 in "fees" to the immigration official. There's no official listing of land crossing fees, but since the official has the authority to deny your entry, your only option is to pay it.

Business/Ordinary Visa

For anyone who wants to stay in Cambodia long-term, you'll need to apply for an E class visa (not to be confused with the electronic "e-visa"). E class visas are also referred to as "business visas" or "ordinary visas," and they allow the holder to stay in Cambodia for extended periods of time. Ordinary visas initially last for 30 days, but can be extended once you're in the country for up to 12 months at a time.

There are four types of ordinary visa extensions: one for workers (class EB), one for people seeking employment (class EG), one for students (class ES), and one for retirees (class ER).

The ordinary/business visa is a visa on arrival (you cannot get one electronically before arriving). Make sure you have a filled out application , passport photo, and $35 in U.S. dollars. The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days, so you'll need to apply for the appropriate visa extension if you plan to stay longer. Visa extensions are granted for up to 12 months at a time, and only the six-month or 12-month extensions allow holders to leave and re-enter Cambodia.

• Workers (EB Extension) : This extension is for those who are working, volunteering, or freelancing in Cambodia plus their immediate family members. You'll need a letter of employment from a Cambodian company or a letter stating you're self-employed with an official government stamp. Family members will have to show documents that prove the relation between them and the sponsor. This visa allows workers to live in Cambodia, but you'll still need a valid work permit to legally have a job in Cambodia.
• Employment Seekers (EG Extension) : If you're looking for work in Cambodia, the EG extension lets you have up to six months to find a job and then convert the EG extension into an EB extension.
• Students (ES Extension) : Essentially a student visa, you'll need to show a letter of acceptance into a Cambodian education program, plus proof of sufficient funds to support yourself.
• Retirees (ER Extension) : Retired individuals who want to live in Cambodia can apply for the ER extension if they are over 55 and have proof of sufficient funds to live.

The extension must be applied for within 30 days of arrival and before your visa expires. The official way to do it is to visit the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh, which is next to the airport. The fees for the extension seem to vary arbitrarily, depending on the type of extension, the length of stay, and the official who helps you. For an extra fee, there are agencies all over the country who will submit the paperwork for you.

The Khmer visa, or K class visa, is a special lifetime visa for individuals with a family relation to Cambodia, typically the children of Cambodian emigrants. This is also a visa on arrival and you'll need the completed application form , your current passport, and a passport photo as well. Officially, you'll also need documentation that proves Cambodian ancestry, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or a photocopy of a Cambodian parent's passport. Unofficially, people have been able to get the Khmer visa by showing identification with a Cambodian last name and speaking the language.

The Khmer visa should be free of charge to eligible applicants, but immigration officials sometimes charge a "facilitation fee."

Visa Overstays

The penalty for overstaying your visa is a fee of $10 per day, for up to 30 days. Although you should never overstay a visa, if you need to stay longer by just a couple of days, the truth is that it's likely easier and less expensive to overstay your visa than to request an extension.

After 30 days, however, the penalties drastically increase. In addition to being liable for the mounting fees, you'll also risk imprisonment, immediate deportation, and a possible ban on being able to return to Cambodia.

Extending Your Visa

If you have a tourist visa—obtained electronically or on arrival—you are allowed to extend it one time for an additional 30 days. Just like requesting an extension to an ordinary/business visa, you can request the tourist extension in person at the Immigration Department in Phnom Penh or hire an agency to submit the paperwork for you. As with the ordinary visa, the fee for requesting an extension can vary, but it's usually between $30 and $50.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Cambodia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Cambodia.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Cambodia your passport must be:

• valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive in Cambodia
• undamaged and complete - entry is normally refused if you have a damaged passport or pages missing

If you apply to renew or extend your visa from within Cambodia, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the start date of that subsequent renewal or extension.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

Visa requirements

You will need a visa to enter and travel through Cambodia as a visitor.

Check with the Royal Embassy of Cambodia for the latest information on fees, conditions and photograph requirements.

Tourist visas are valid for 30 days from the date of entry into Cambodia. Make sure your passport is stamped on arrival and keep the departure form. If you lose your departure form, you’ll need to contact immigration officials before you leave the country to make alternative arrangements.

Applying for a visa

Apply for an e-visa at least 4 days in advance.

If you do not get an e-visa, you can get a visa on arrival at airports or land border crossings. You need to provide a photo and pay in US dollars.

You can also get an extension of a tourist visa while you are in Cambodia.

You can be fined, detained and deported if you overstay your visa. There is no limit to this fine. If you overstay more than 30 days, you will need to leave Cambodia and pay the fine.

Work permits

To work in Cambodia, you need a business visa and a work permit. Business visas are issued by the immigration department and are available:

• on arrival in Phnom Penh airport
• at the immigration department
• in advance from a Cambodian embassy

Your employer will need to apply for your work permit from the Department of Labour and Social Affairs.

The Cambodian government strictly enforces these rules, so you should ask the relevant department for the latest advice.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Cambodia guide .

Registering with the authorities

The Cambodian Department of Immigration runs an online registration app called the Foreigners Present in Cambodia System (FPCS) . If you fail to get yourself registered, you may be unable to extend your visa if you want to.

If you’re staying in a hotel, guesthouse or rented accommodation, make sure the manager or landlord registers you using the app.

If you are staying with friends or family or own your own home in Cambodia, you will need to register yourself, using the app for Android or iOS . You need to enter a Cambodian phone number for your registration to be valid.

Cambodia visa: Requirements and application procedure

Cambodia visa requirements are clear and easy to understand. Cambodia has an excellent Visa on Arrival policy offering Visa on Arrival for almost all nationalities in the world. Only 10 nationalities need to arrange a pre-approved visa for Cambodia from the consulate.

There are 4 different visa options to enter Cambodia.

• Visa EXEMPT : 9 nationalities from ASEAN are visa EXEMPT for stays from 14 days to 30 days
• eVisa : Most nationalities can obtain eVisa for stays up to 30 days
• Visa ON ARRIVAL: Most nationalities can obtain Visa ON ARRIVAL for stays up to 30 days
• Visa REQUIRED : 10 nationalities are required to obtain a pre-arranged visa from the consulate prior to arrival

CAMBODIA eVISA

Most nationalities are eligible to apply for Cambodia eVisa online. You will receive your approved eVisa in your email. You can also download it from the eVisa portal. You must present a copy of your approved eVisa at the port of entry in Cambodia.

Cambodia eVisa is valid for 3 months starting from the date of issue. Evisa can be used for a 30-day stay, single-entry only.

Cambodia eVisas are accepted at the following ports only.

• Siem Reap International Airport
• Preah Sihanouk International Airport

Cambodia-Thailand Land Border

• Cham Yeam – Had Lek
• Poi Pet – Aranyaprathet

You can exit from any port with your eVisa. There are no restrictions on exiting the country on an eVisa.

Application procedure

You can apply for Cambodia eVisa online on the official Cambodia eVisa portal.

You have to create an account first. Then fill out the application, upload the required documents and pay the visa fee. 

You will receive your approved eVisa in your email, which you must print and present on your arrival in Cambodia.

Documents required

While filling out the online application, you must upload the following

• One recent passport-size digital photo (JPG or PNG only)
• Scanned copy of the passport ID page

The Cambodia eVisa fee is $36 USD ($30 USD application fee and $6 USD processing fee)

Processing time

Cambodia eVisa processing takes 3 business days.

Priority visa service

There is no expedited service. Cambodia eVisa processing takes 3 business days.

Customer service

The Cambodia eVisa portal has dedicated email and phone numbers. You can contact them by email or phone.

Fraudulent websites

There are 100s of fraudulent Cambodia eVisa websites. Cambodia Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a list of known fraudulent Cambodia eVisa websites . Make sure you are not falling prey to any of these fraudulent websites. 

IMPORTANT The ONLY and OFFICIAL Cambodia eVisa portal is  https://www.evisa.gov.kh/ . Any other site is fraudulent. Check the URL carefully before applying for your Cambodia eVisa.

CAMBODIA VISA ON ARRIVAL (VOA)

Most nationalities can obtain Cambodia Visa on Arrival (VOA) at all international airports, seaports and land borders crossings in Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival is issued for stays up to 30 days, single-entry only. A 1-month extension is possible.

Visa on Arrival can be obtained at the following ports.

Upon arrival in Cambodia, you would need to apply for your Visa on Arrival (VOA). The procedure is fairly simple.

You would need the following documentation for Cambodia Visa on Arrival (VOA)

• Completed Visa on Arrival application form (you can pick one up at the VOA section)
• One recent passport-size photo (2×2 inch)
• Original passport with at least 2 blank pages

The fee for Cambodia Visa on Arrival is $30 USD payable in USD only. The ATMs at the VOA sections do not usually work. So make sure to carry $30 USD in cash. 

Procedure to obtain Cambodia Visa ON ARRIVAL at the airport, seaport or land border

After arrival, head to the Visa on Arrival area. Grab a copy of the application form. Fill all the details in the application form. 

You will see two lines/counters. One to submit the documents and another to pick up the passport. Head to the first counter and submit the following.

• Completed Arrival-Departure card
• Completed customs form
• Completed Visa on Arrival application form
• One passport-size photo
• Original passport

Go to the second line and wait till they call your name. When they call your name, pay the visa fee of $30 USD and pick up your passport. 

Check your new Cambodia visa and make sure all details are correct. 

IMPORTANT Make sure to bring $30 USD in cash. The ATMs at the Visa on Arrival don’t work. They often time out. There are no currency exchanges.

You may be asked to show proof of onward ticket , hotel booking or bank statements. If you are entering Cambodia on a one-way ticket, make sure to get proof of an onward ticket from an onward ticket agency such as OnwardTicket.com .

CAMBODIA VISA FROM THE CONSULATE

The following 10 nationalities must arrange a pre-approved visa for Cambodia from their nearest Cambodian consulate prior to their travel. These 10 nationalities are not eligible for eVisa or Visa on Arrival (VOA).

Visa for Cambodia must be applied at least 1 month in advance. 

Cambodia visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. It’s valid for a 30-day stay, single-entry only. 

You can apply for a Cambodia visa at your nearest Cambodia consulate or e mbassy in person or through the mail.

You must submit the following documentation.

• Completed and signed visa application form (you can pick one up at the consulate)
• Original passport with at least two blank pages
• A copy of your passport ID page
• Round-trip airline tickets
• Hotel booking
• Proof of residence (if applying in a country other than your country of passport)

The Cambodia visa fee is $30 USD or its equivalent in local currency. Some consulates charge an additional $5 USD as a service charge. 

Payment method varies from consulate to consulate. So check with your nearest consulate before applying. 

Cambodia visa processing can take from 2 to 7 working days depending on the consulate. Check with your nearest consulate for the exact processing time.

Apply in-person

You can walk into your nearest Cambodia consulate to apply for your visa in person. No appointment is necessary.

Apply by mail

If you do not have a Cambodia consulate nearby, you can also apply by mail. You must attach a prepaid, self-addressed return envelope with your application.

There is no expedited visa service. Check with your nearest Cambodia consulate if they can expedite the process for you.

ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURE AT THE AIRPORT

Entering Cambodia

If you are visa EXEMPT or holding an eVisa or a visa from the consulate, head straight to passport control.

If you need to obtain Visa on Arrival (VOA), head to Visa on Arrival section.

As always, carry a copy of your return ticket and hotel booking just in case. If you are traveling on a one-way ticket, don’t forget to get proof of onward ticket .

Leaving Cambodia

On exit, you will go through passport control. Your entry stamp will be verified and a new exit stamp will be issued in your passport. 

You will not be asked any questions while exiting the country unless you have overstayed your visa. Just account for 10-15 minutes of additional time for the exit process.

TRAVEL TO CAMBODIA IN 2022 (COVID-19) - UPDATED 17 MARCH 2022 The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially decided to waive travel requirements for all travelers entering Cambodia as follows: 1) Waiving the requirement for COVID-19 PCR Test certificate 72 hours prior to your arrival to in Cambodia. 2) Waiving the requirement for Rapid Test on arrival at the airport, land border and seaport to in Cambodia. 3) Reopening the Visa-on- Arrival service for all international travelers by air, land and sea. Upon the arrivals all tourism stakeholders, national and international tourists, and travelers must present vaccinated cards recognized by their respective health authorities. For those, who have not been vaccinated, are still eligible to request/apply for Visa on Arrival; but subject to 14-day state quarantine at the locations designated by the Ministry of Health or respective/local authorities.

For most visitors to the Kingdom, visa are obtainable upon arrival at both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap International Airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap . At land crossing from Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, visa can be obtained at International Check Point border. 

Tourists also can get their visas prior to their arrival through a Cambodian Embassy or Consulate overseas . Tourists also can get eVisa through online E-Visa  before travelling. Some nationalities are required to get visa in advance at Royal Embassy of Kingdom of Cambodia in their country : Afghanistan, Algeria, Arab Saudi, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Nigeria.

A passport and visa are required. Tourists and business travelers may purchase a Cambodian visa valid for one month at the airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and borders. Both require a passport valid for at least six (6) months from the expiry date, 01 recent passport-sized photo. A departure tax is charged on all domestic and international flights.

Tourist & Business Visas:

Visitors from countries not under Visa Exemption Agreements must apply for a Tourists (T) or business (E) visa valid for one month at the points of entry.

Visa K can be issued to a Cambodian national entering the Kingdom on a foreign passport. (The applicant has to provide well-documented evidence, such as proof that one's parents were Cambodian).

Visa Exemption:

The nationals of the Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar do not need a tourist visa and may stay in Cambodia for 21 and 30 days respectively. Read more

Visa extension:

The tourist (T) and business (E) visas can be extended at the Immigration Department, National Police. The Diplomatic (A), Official (B) and Courtesy (C) visas can be extended at the Consular Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A tourist visa can be extended only once for up to one month (single entry).

A business visa can be extended for:

• One month (Single entry)
• Three months (Single entry)
• Six months (Multiple entry)
• One year (Multiple entry)
• Overstayers will be fined US$ 10 per day.

Cambodia visa on arrival

Unlike other countries, Cambodia offers the "real" visa on arrival service which means you do not need to apply for anything in advance, all you need to do is to fill in an immigration form on your flight to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh or bus ride to Cambodia border gates, then hand in the documents including 2*2'' size photos, 30 US dollars for visa fee, entry exit form to get the visa stamped on your passport.

How to apply

Fill out an immigration form when you arrive at an airport (or you can get it on the flight to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh) or at a border gate. You can contact the airline carriers or the bus companies for the form in case you want to fill it out before you go!

Head to the "apply visa" counter to hand in the documents: photos, visa fee of 30 US dollars and the immigration form to get the visa stamp.

Phnom Penh – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Street crime, particularly phone and bag snatchings, occurs frequently in areas where foreigners gather; resistance can result in injury. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and to be extra vigilant when displaying items like jewelry, bags and cell phones in public. Violent crime, such as sexual assault and homicide, is common, sometimes against foreigners.

Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Use caution when walking or driving at night.

Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Land mines and unexploded ordnance are found in very remote areas throughout Cambodia, and especially in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces.

Do not touch unknown metal objects; instead notify the Cambodia Mine Action Center at 012-800-473/023-995-437. Use a local guide when walking in forested areas or dry rice paddies in these areas.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Please visit the  Embassy’s COVID-19 page  for more information on entry/exit requirements related to COVID-19 in Cambodia. 

You will need a valid passport and a Cambodian visa to enter Cambodia. Tourist and business visas are valid for one month from the date of entry into Cambodia.  Cambodia offers on-line visa processing . You may also apply in person at the Cambodian Embassy located at 4530 16th Street NW, Washington, DC 20011, tel. 202-726-7742, fax 202-726-8381.

Tourists, diplomats, and business travelers may also obtain a Cambodian visa at the airports in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and at all major border crossings. Cambodian immigration officials at airports now collect fingerprints upon entry using an inkless, electronic process. You will need a passport valid for a minimum of six months beyond the date of entry into Cambodia.

If you remain in Cambodia beyond the date of your authorized stay, Cambodian immigration officials will likely impose a fine of $10 per day overstayed. In cases of excessive overstays, you may be arrested for violating immigration laws and detained as you undergo official deportation proceedings at your own expense. Deportation from Cambodia may result in your being prohibited from reentering Cambodia in the future. You should contact the nearest Cambodian embassy or consulate, or visit the  Embassy of the Kingdom of Cambodia website  for the most current visa information.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Cambodia

Safety and Security

The Department of State is concerned that individuals and groups may be planning terrorist actions against U.S. citizens and interests, including at sites frequented by Westerners in Southeast Asia. Extremist groups in Southeast Asia have transnational capabilities to carry out attacks against locations where Westerners congregate. Although the extremist threat in Cambodia is considered low and terrorist attacks are not common, U.S. citizens residing in, or traveling to, Cambodia should exercise caution in clubs, discos, bars, restaurants, hotels, places of worship, schools, outdoor recreation venues, tourist areas, beach resorts, and other places frequented by foreigners. U.S. citizens should remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and avoid ongoing police enforcement actions, crowds, and demonstrations. See Department of State’s  Worldwide Caution .

Land mines and unexploded ordnance are found in remote rural areas throughout Cambodia, and especially in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, and Oddar Meanchey  provinces. Travelers in these regions should never walk in forested areas or even in dry rice paddies without a local guide. Areas around small bridges on secondary roads are particularly dangerous. Travelers should not touch anything that resembles a mine or unexploded ordnance; they should notify the Cambodia Mine Action Center at 012-800-473/023-995-437.

Crime:  Cambodia has a critical crime rate, including street crime. Military weapons and explosives are readily available to criminals despite authorities’ efforts to collect and destroy such weapons. Armed robberies occur frequently, and foreign residents and visitors, including U.S. citizens, are among the victims. The Embassy has also received reports that residences and hotel rooms of U.S. citizens in Phnom Penh were burglarized while the occupants were asleep.

The most common type of theft is “snatch and grab” robbery, and anything that can be quickly grabbed is at risk: cameras, jewelry, purses, backpacks, mobile phones, etc. Exercise caution and keep belongings out of sight if you travel via “tuk-tuk,” as passengers in these open-air vehicles have been targeted by thieves. If walking along the street, make yourself less of a target by carrying bags or items in your hand or on the shoulder that is furthest from the street. If someone attempts to rob you, you should surrender your valuables immediately, since any perceived resistance may be met with physical violence, including lethal force. The U.S. Embassy has received reports of violent robberies escalating into fatalities. 

Pickpockets, some who are masquerading as beggars, are present in the markets and at the tourist sites. Sometimes they may act overly friendly, placing their hand on your shoulder or back to distract you in order to pick your pocket.

To avoid the risk of theft or confiscation of original documents, the U.S. Embassy advises its personnel and all U.S. citizens traveling to, or residing in, Cambodia to carry photocopies of their U.S. passport, driver's license, and other important documents and to leave the originals in a hotel safe or other secure place. The U.S. Embassy advises citizens not to give their passport as collateral for motorcycle rentals, hotels, etc. Local police rarely investigate reports of crime against tourists, and travelers should not expect to recover stolen items. It has also been reported that some police stations charge foreigners between $20 and $100 to file a police report.

Foreigners travelling to Cambodia should be aware of common scams targeting tourists, often involving card games. [MWP(P1] The Embassy has received reports of U.S. citizens being approached by individuals in public locations, such as popular shopping malls, and being invited to their homes where they end up participating in card games. These are often scams to steal tourists’ money. If you find yourself a victim of one of these scams, you should contact the U.S. Embassy.

Foreigners travelling to Cambodia should be aware of crime targeting tourists involving drugged drinks. The Embassy has received reports of U.S. citizens’ drinks being drugged at bars in order to incapacitate them for theft or sexual assault. Do not accept drinks from strangers and do not leave drinks unattended.

The U.S. Embassy advises citizens to be wary of scams involving individuals claiming they are in Cambodia and need financial assistance from the United States. The Embassy has determined that many of these requests are fraudulent and the individuals making the requests use false identities. In the past year, numerous confirmed media reports of large-scale scam operations have led to a crackdown by Cambodian authorities. These operations have been reported to lure non-Cambodians with false promises of gainful employment. Victims of this false recruitment have then been made to participate in the online/phone-based financial confidence scams.

There have been numerous reports of visitors receiving fake or novelty $50 and $100 bills from ATM machines and banks across Cambodia. When receiving money from ATMs or bank tellers, you should count and examine the money while still in the presence of the ATM camera or bank teller. The fake money typically has a different feel than real U.S. currency and often has markings on the lower left that indicate it is for novelty purposes. If a suspicious bill is discovered, it should be shown to the ATM camera or teller, and the bank should be notified immediately.

The U.S. Embassy advises its personnel who travel to the provinces outside of Phnom Penh to exercise caution outside the provincial towns at all times. Many rural parts of the country remain without effective policing. Avoid walking alone after dusk anywhere in Sihanoukville, especially along the waterfront. You should be particularly vigilant during annual festivals and at tourist sites in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, where there have been marked increases in motorcycle “snatch and grab” thefts of bags and purses.

If you are visiting Cambodia, you should practice sound personal security awareness by varying your routes and routines, maintaining a low profile, not carrying or displaying large amounts of cash, not wearing flashy or expensive jewelry, and not walking alone after dark. In addition, you should travel by automobile and not use local moto-taxis or cyclos (passenger-carrying bicycles). These vehicles are more vulnerable to armed robberies and offer no protection against injury when involved in traffic accidents.

U.S. citizens are advised not to engage in commercial surrogacy  arrangements in Cambodia. In October 2016, the Government of Cambodia issued an official proclamation banning commercial surrogacy in Cambodia. Please keep in mind that U.S. citizens and other foreigners in Cambodia are subject to Cambodian laws and procedures.

Although gambling and casinos are legal in Cambodia, the U.S. Embassy strongly encourages all travelers to be cautious in choosing to visit casinos or related gambling centers in Cambodia. The U.S. Embassy is aware of numerous reported incidents at casinos throughout Cambodia. In the past year, these incidents such as fires at casinos resulting in multiple fatalities, violent assaults, murders, and suicides under suspicious circumstances have occurred.

Victims of Crime:  Report crimes to the local police and contact the U.S. Embassy at 023-728-000. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

In cases of sexual assault, U.S. citizen victims should contact the U.S. Embassy first before contacting local police or authorities.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Cambodia are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. If you break local laws in Cambodia, your U.S. passport won’t help you avoid arrest or prosecution.

The same rights and protections afforded those accused of a crime in the U.S. are not guaranteed in Cambodia, and the judicial process may be influenced by political, personal, and financial connections. In both the criminal and civil judicial systems, resources devoted to the investigation/discovery and trial process fall far below the standard expected in the United States. Cambodia routinely employs pre-trial detention for those charged with criminal offenses, sometimes for long periods of time before a trial is scheduled. Prison conditions in Cambodia are substandard and overcrowded, with little access to health care or basic nutritional requirements.

U.S. citizens in Cambodia should be aware that there are limits to the assistance the Embassy can offer to those with concerns about due process or the fairness of their trial, as the Embassy is unable to interfere in the legal processes of a host country.

You can be prosecuted in the United States for engaging in sexual conduct with children or for using or disseminating child pornography in a foreign country regardless of the legality of these activities under that country’s laws. Counterfeit and pirated goods are illegal in the United States, and if you purchase them in a foreign country, you may be breaking local law as well.

LGBTI Travelers:  While there are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Cambodia, same sex marriage is not permitted. While Cambodians are relatively tolerant toward foreigners, LGBTI Cambodians routinely face discrimination and harassment, especially outside major urban areas. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon for couples of any sexual orientation.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  While in Cambodia, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what they find in the United States. Currently, except for buildings and hotels that have been built under international standards, most public places and public transportation are not accessible. Persons with disabilities will face difficulties with Cambodia’s sidewalks, rest rooms, road crossings, and tourist areas.

Women Travelers:  There have been reports of sexual assaults in the vicinity of drinking establishments and possible drugs being used to incapacitate female travelers. See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Water Festival:  During this annual festival, which takes place in November, the population in Phnom Penh increases significantly as millions of Cambodians from every town and province flock to the capital for three days. For personal safety and security, you should avoid crowded areas near the riverfront during the Water Festival holiday.

Customs:  Cambodian customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning temporary importation into or export from Cambodia of items such as medications, firearms, antiquities, or ivory. It is advisable to contact the Embassy of Cambodia in Washington D.C. for specific information regarding customs requirements.

Restrictions on Freedom of Expression and Association:  There are freedom of speech restrictions in Cambodia. Anyone who criticizes or insults the King by any means could face between one to five years in prison. This ban includes insults or criticism made online and via social media. The government of Cambodia has used libel and slander laws to restrict public discussion on topics it deems sensitive or against its interests.

Dual Nationality:  Dual nationality is allowed under Cambodia's 1996 nationality law. However, if you have Cambodian nationality and possess another nationality, you may be viewed as a Cambodian citizen in any court proceedings and face stricter sentences.

Business Transactions:  Some U.S. citizens have reported threats of personal injury, extortion, detention, or kidnapping related to personal business disputes, in particular those involving real estate. If you are planning to engage in real estate or other significant financial transactions, please proceed with caution and retain the appropriate legal counsel.

Financial Transaction:  The U.S. dollar is widely used, especially for larger transactions, and most prices are quoted in dollars. Ripped, torn, or stained U.S. bills are not accepted. Authorities encourage greater use of the Cambodian riel, but it is less favored and is mostly given to tourists as change for dollar purchases. The riel is commonly used in smaller towns and rural areas. Credit cards are accepted at some establishments within Cambodia, and a number of banks in Phnom Penh accept credit cards for cash advances. Credit cards are often subject to a service charge. Banks and major hotels accept travelers' checks but usually charge a service fee. Several international banks operate ATM machines that allow travelers to obtain U.S. dollar currency in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and other urban centers. Personal checks are not generally accepted. Several banks serve as Western Union agents, to which funds can be wired, including in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and other provincial cities. Photography:  Taking photographs of anything that could be perceived as being of military or security interest — including government buildings, military installations, airfields, and bridges — may result in problems with the authorities and confiscation of your camera.

Medical facilities and services in Cambodia do not meet international standards. Both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have a limited number of internationally run clinics and hospitals that can provide basic medical care and stabilization. Medical care outside of these two cities is almost non-existent. Local pharmacies provide a limited supply of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Because the quality of locally obtained medications can vary greatly, make sure to bring a supply of your medications adequate for the duration of your stay in Cambodia. You should be wary of purchasing local medication. Counterfeit medication is readily available, often indiscernible from authentic medication, and potentially lethal.

 Be aware that neither U.S. Medicare nor Medicaid apply overseas.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on what type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

  Supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation is strongly recommended.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of  Cambodia   to ensure the medication is legal in Cambodia. Always, carry your prescription medication in the original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Be careful if purchasing off-brand medication from pharmacies in Cambodia. Drugs sold in pharmacies can be fake and possibly dangerous. 

Malaria, Dengue and Tuberculosis are serious health concerns in Cambodia. For further information, please consult the  CDC .

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Condition and Safety:  You should not drive at night in Cambodia outside of city limits. Roads between major areas are adequate; however, roads leading to rural areas are poor. During the rainy season, road conditions deteriorate considerably, and roadside assistance is non-existent. Cambodian drivers routinely ignore traffic laws and vehicles are poorly maintained. Intoxicated drivers are commonplace, particularly during the evening hours. Travel is recommended in daylight between the hours of 6:30  a.m. and 5:30 p.m.  There are also frequent bus accidents.    Serious flooding occurs throughout Cambodia from June through November. Travel on unpaved or dirt roads is difficult after heavy rainfall. The National Route highways are the only roads that can be traveled, with caution, during this time of the year.

Traffic Laws:  In the event you are in a traffic accident, you should cooperate with the police. You should also contact your insurance company for guidance in dealing with the other party and the police. To avoid the risk of theft or confiscation of original documents, the U.S. Embassy advises its personnel and all U.S. citizens traveling to, or residing in, Cambodia to carry photocopies of their U.S. passport, driver's license, and other important documents and to leave the originals in a hotel safe or other secure place.

While in Cambodia, you may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States. Traffic in Cambodia is composed of a mix of automobiles, commercial trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and tuk tuks. As a result of poor roads, driver intoxication, and disregard for traffic laws, traffic accidents are a common occurrence. You should exercise great caution in moving through the country, regardless of mode of transportation.

Public Transportation:  Travelers should exercise caution when using inter-city buses, including those to popular tourist destinations such as Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. Despite the wide availability of moto-taxis, you should not use them due to safety concerns. Be vigilant if traveling by “tuk-tuk” or “cyclo” as personal belongings can be easily stolen. Organized emergency services for victims of traffic accidents are non-existent outside of major urban areas, and those available in major urban areas are inadequate.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Cambodia, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Cambodia’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: The Commandant of the Coast Guard has determined that effective anti-terrorism measures are not in place in Cambodia ports and has imposed conditions of entry on vessels that arrive in U.S. ports having visited ports in Cambodia. Mariners and passengers on commercial vessels traveling through the ports of Cambodia should exercise increased caution.

Mariners planning travel to Cambodia should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts at Maritime Security Communications with Industry (MSCI) Web Portal | MARAD (dot.gov) . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings website  (select “broadcast warnings”).

Types of Cambodia Visa on Arrival

The tourist visa on arrival is a visa that you can get at an international airport and through some land entries. It’s valid for 30 days from the date of entry and costs 30$. Don’t confuse it with Cambodia tourist eVisa . There are two types of visas on arrival.

1. Single Entry Cambodia Tourist Visa (T)

The Cambodia Tourist visa (T-class) is valid for a single entry and 30 days, and costs $30. It can be renewed once for a further 30 days inside Cambodia.

2. Single Entry Cambodia Ordinary Visa (E) or Cambodia Business Visa

You should get this instead a tourist visa if you are sure you’ll be staying Cambodia for longer than 60 days. It costs 35$ and comes with a 30 days validity. You can renew it inside Cambodia through an agency.

Who Can Get Cambodia Visa on Arrival?

Citizens of almost every country are eligible for a Cambodia visa on arrival.

However, nationals from  Afghanistan, Algeria, Arab Saudi, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Nigeria  need to obtain their visa in the nearest  Embassy/Consulate of Cambodia abroad.

Requirements for Cambodia Visa on Arrival

• Original passport with 6 months of remaining validity and a full blank page.
• A visa application form (Will be available at the visa window at Cambodia ports of entry or given before landing if you are arriving by plane).
• Two recent passport photos (2 X 2).

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Fees

The Visa fee is $30 USD or 1000 Thai Baht (in cash) for one month tourist visa for Cambodia. 

Land Checkpoints for Cambodia Visa on Arrival

Cambodia has 19 land border checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam . However, visa on arrival is not available at all of them.

Vietnam to Cambodia

You can use any of the border checkpoints for visa on arrival.

Laos to Cambodia

You can use Tropieng Kreal  International Check Point (Stung Treng Province) to cross.

Thailand to Cambodia

You can use the following check points:- Cham Yeam  International Check Point (Koh Kong Province), Poi Pet  International Check Point (Banteay Meanchey Province), Osmach  International Check Point (Odor Meanchey Province), Choam Sanguam  International Check Point (Banteay Meanchey Province), Prum  International Check Point (Pailin Province), Doung  International Check Point (Battambang Province)

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Application Process

The process is really straightforward if you are flying. When you arrive, simply head to the Visa On Arrival desk of the airport and hand over the documents and pay, and you are done. The immigration officials will check your passport and application, and call you once your visa is ready.  But if you cross through a land border like me, it can be stressful due to the high amounts of scams that happen around there. So let me get to that.

Getting from Thailand to Cambodia

To go to Cambodia, a friend of mine and I came from the island of Koh Chang to Siem Reap (which is one of the islands closest to the Cambodian border). It is roughly a 4 hour journey. You have until the night before to book a minivan or bus from one of the local vendors (price ranges from 500-600 Thai Baht/$16-$20 USD). 

My friend and I caught a minivan from Koh Chang island to Siem Reap (which is where Angkor wat is located). The minivan or big bus will pick you up early morning around 6-8 am. They will give you a colored sticker or land yard to coordinate with the van.

You all ride the 30-45 minute ferry together to Trat (the mainland near Koh Chang) and then hop on your van again post-ferry ride. The driver will stop once to eat, near the Thai/Cambodia border of Poipet, Cambodia.

Always Pay with USD

This is where it gets sketchy. At the border, I was already stressed due to being up for hours and they rushed us through the process. And, at that time, I was still a relatively new traveler and very trusting due to living in Thailand for five months by then ( having never been scammed there).

The Immigration lady asked me to pay 3000 Thai Bahts and I handed the cash to her. I didn’t really check the currency conversion rates and they insisted on the high conversion rate.

For example, $5 USD is roughly 150 Thai Baht and they will tell you it’s 200 Baht or something like that. I did some negotiation, still ended up losing 50$.

Most entry ports require that you pay for the visa in US dollars, as this is an unofficial currency in Cambodia. However, the US Dollars must be in mint condition.

I’ve heard of some people being scammed by actual police officers or border control officers at the border. They also try to claim that Thailand is “poorer” than Cambodia which is totally wrong/opposite and try to get you to pay more because here you can pay with Thai Baht and US Dollars.

If you do come from Thailand through land I recommend taking a bus from one of the three bus stations in Bangkok (Mochit, Sai Tai Mai, and Ekkamai). They are more reliable, and convenient way to get to Cambodia and deal with the tourist visa. They don’t rush you either.

Extending Cambodia Tourist Visa on Arrival

It can be extended for 30 more days at the Immigration Bureau in Phnom Penh or through some agencies elsewhere in the country. It is important to note that the tourist visa can only be extended once, and the maximum period of stay is no more than two months.

Overstaying Your Cambodia Visa

There is a $10 USD fee per day if you overstay your visa, which must be paid upon exit of the country. You may be charged for a visa extension (but this doesn’t always happen). Depending on your overstay, you could possibly be imprisoned, deported, or face a ban on future entry into Cambodia. 

Please do NOT let this worry you about traveling to Cambodia. All my friends that went through flight into Cambodia had no issues and my other friends who went through the border crossing did not have worse stories than mine.

Remember you are going to a developing country and things are different here. Plus when you compare it to your currency it is never a huge sum of money, so just pay it, if you do deal with scamming issues because it is a losing battle. So have fun, take glorious pictures, and do not miss the sunrise at Angkor Wat!

Great tips! I didn’t know Cambodia would allow you to pay in Baht. Like you Sid, most ports of entry accept only USD. Good to know about taking the bus as a preferred way to get to Cambodia from Thailand. I’m always up for easy and simple when it comes to immigration

Wow! I hadn’t realised there were so many land border crossing points into Cambodia. It’s also good to know that you can’t get visa at every single one of them, so need to plan carefully. I haven’t been to Cambodia considering it is roughly a 3-hours flight away from Manila, and I don’t need a visa (as part of the ASEAN Treaty). Your blog is a very helpful guide to about getting scammed. I think not only in Cambodia but also from other countries where there are tons of tourists.

Cambodia Tourist Visa On Arrival – Entry Requirements

Also known as T visa, the Cambodia tourist visa (T class) allows a foreign national intending to stay within the Kingdom of Cambodia for 30 days or fewer. 

How to get it?

Eligibility conditions, how to apply.

The 30-day Cambodia tourist visa on arrival can be issued d to foreign nationals in advance, or on arrival for at the airport. The tourist visa can be extended up to 30 more days by paying.

After the expiry of the extended period, the tourist must leave the country and come again to obtain a new visa.

Note that a Cambodian tourist visa is mandatory if the aim of travel is tourism. 

Note also that if you intend to stay in Cambodia for an extended period, you should obtain on an ordinary visa that is renewable regularly with the expiry.

Foreign nationals wishing to visit Cambodia can buy a tourist visa at the airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and international borders. The tourist visa is issued with a one-month validity.

All the foreign nationals must hold a passport of their country with a minimum validity period of six months.

You must leave the country after the expiry of the extension period. 

The tourist visa is issued to foreign nationals according to the nationality as per rules that are in force from time to time.

Before applying for Cambodia tourist vas, it is sensible to check the time taken for processing the application for a visa.

You can also apply online. Check if your country nationals are eligible for applying online by visiting the website homepage. Cambodia e-Visa

The Kingdom of Cambodia e-Visa is the online authorization from the Government. It’s equal to a visa. It does not carry a label or stamp in the passport.

The e-Visa is meant to allow foreign nationals with valid passports for traveling within Cambodia.

Apply online for e-visa by visiting the website homepage. Make sure to fill in the data in e-Visa applications correctly. Thy should all match those in your passport.

Note that e-Visa holders can enter Cambodia via Phnom Penh International Airport, Sihanoukville International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, Cham Yeam (Koh Kong Province), Bavet, Sihanoukville International Airport, Troping Kreal Border Post and via no other points of entry.

Take care of these points with respect to Cambodia tourist visa on arrival without fail:

• Port of entry – It is the place where the applicant arrives in Cambodia. This must be indicated in the application.
• In the photograph, the head should be at the center. It should show a full, front and clear view of the face of the applicant and the background should be white.
• Applicant’s head with both hair and face need to be shown clearly from the crown of the head to the thin tip.
• The photographs should not be older than six months. No hats, caps or sunglasses are allowed on the photograph.
• The photograph should present a natural, closed mouth hand open yes looking ahead.
• Scanned photos, color photographs of passport size photos are not permissible.

Current Photographs:

You need to present at least 2-3 copies of your recent photograph in passport size. If you don't have any, then you just need to pay a small amount of money to a passport scan.

Airline Tickets and Hotel Reservation:

Try to present your arrival airline or ship tickets as well as departure tickets. You also have to present the hotel reservation documents, the paid or unpaid status doesn't matter in this case.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Application Process:

There's nothing much that you have to do to apply for a visa on arrival in Cambodia. All you need to do are:

 After arriving at the border checkpoints firstly you have to fill the application form. 

In the above form, you just need to write the general Information. Those are:

• Surname and name as per the passport.
• Choose your gender.
• Date of birth.
• Nationality.
• Passport number.
• Profession.
• Date of passport issue. and expiry.

Hi. I’m travelling to Cambodia in 2 weeks from UK. Is it better to exchange £ to $ in the UK before coming to Cambodia, or is it better to bring British £ and exchange it once I’m there? Does anybody know which works out better / cheaper?

I can just wait 4 hours and avoid paying for both. Especially that most budget friendly places won’t let me check in at night. What do you think? Thanks in advance

Hello Kasia.

You will not be able to remain in PNH airport after arrival. You will have to complete all arrival procedures and exit the terminal building.

The airport closes and locks up for several hours every night.

Thanks Ian. I appreciate it - I didn’t realise. Looks like I need to look for Plan B.

Withdraw cash from an ATM when you're in Cambodia. You will have to pay a fee, but the rate will be better than any cash for cash transaction.

If doing Visa on Arrival, then US dollars are going to be needed anyway. Also, at 1am the last thing you want to be doing is messing about with money. I would suggest bringing enough to cover up to the hostel at least.

I appreciate you may want to save money, but at that time of the night stick with the official airport taxis.

Why won’t budget friendly places let you check in at night? I get that some will not have 24 reception but not all.

Bring enough $ for visa and first day make sure they are in perfect condition and that you have a good selection of smaller denominations
