Step across Broad Street from Downtown Athens and you'll step back two centuries in time to the birthplace of public higher education in America. Did you know? The University of Georgia actually predates the city of Athens. The University was chartered in 1785 and classes began in 1801, a full five years before Athens was chartered in 1806. 

The wrought iron Arch, forged just a few blocks north at a foundry that's now The Foundry music venue at Graduate Athens hotel, is the traditional entrance to campus. You'll probably quickly notice that student veer to either side of the Arch rather than passing underneath-- that's due to an old superstition that students must wait until after graduation to walk through the Arch, else they won't graduate!

Early UGA presidents were Yale men and designed the original campus, now known as North Campus , after Yale. Far across the quad, facing the Arch, is Old College, the oldest building on campus. In the formative years of the University, students and faculty all lived, studied, and ate in this single building. What a long ways they've come over two hundred plus years!

Staying on campus

The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education and Hotel  

When you visit campus, continue your tour experience with a stay at the official hotel of the University of Georgia. Located in the center of campus and within walking distance of multiple attractions, the Georgia Center is a prime destination for visitors. The Georgia Center also offers a free shuttle for guests that will take you around campus and Athens.

Dining Services offers five residential locations as well as several retail and market locations throughout campus, each offering delicious fare at excellent value. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) is always happy to host student visitors and their guests! The CAES Office of Academic Affairs schedules visits to showcase all our college has to offer. Visits with CAES consist of a meeting with CAES Academic Affairs and a short tour of one of our three campuses from one of our student ambassadors.

Frequently Asked Questions for CAES Athens Campus Visitors

• What is the benefit of visiting UGA CAES?  By visiting UGA CAES, visitors will learn of all the wonderful opportunities CAES has to offer students. On the UGA CAES 45-minute CAES Ambassador-led walking tour, visitors will see the academic spaces, buildings, and study areas which UGA CAES students use while majoring in the college.
• Will UGA CAES make the UGA Admissions office aware I visited CAES?  UGA CAES does not inform UGA Admissions of a student's visit to UGA CAES. For information on UGA Admissions criteria components visit the  UGA Admissions page.
• Does UGA CAES recommend students to the UGA Admissions office?  UGA CAES is not involved in UGA Undergraduate or Transfer admissions decisions nor does CAES recommend students to the UGA Admissions office.
• During my visit with UGA CAES will I see the entire campus?  No, a UGA CAES tour can possibly consist of meeting with the CAES Director of Student Recruitment and a CAES Ambassador-led 45-minute walking tour of south campus. But there are plenty of places to get outside during the week, including more than 40 miles of natural surface, wooded hiking trails and a 4.5-mile mountain biking course. There’s also a 12-mile and growing network of paved multi-use trails connecting the park system to the university and downtown Athens.

Advice for Campus Visitations from the Admissions Staff

Many students will have travel plans during the summer and for rising seniors those plans often include visiting colleges they plan to apply to in the fall.  Here are some tips and advice from our admissions staff of things to keep in mind as you plan your campus visits.

• Do your homework .  Go online to websites of the colleges you are visiting.  Learn what you want to do while you’re on campus.  Check for visitation calendars, see if you need to register for a tour, etc.  Review a campus map to become familiar with where you are going.  If you are visiting UGA and you have an iPhone, download our App  which includes a campus map among its many features.
• Wear comfortable shoes.  Campus tours will almost always include a walking tour.  Now is not the time to break-in a new pair of shoes!
• Come prepared.  Go ahead and start thinking about the questions you want to ask and write them down.  You don’t want to forget once you’re there.  Determine where you are going to need to park and find an address if you’re using a navigational device.  Be aware that while some areas may have visitor parking, this is not always free.
• Check the weather.   Look online to see what the weather is going to be like the day of your visit.  Bring an umbrella if there’s a chance of rain.  If it’s going to be hot bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.  You may even want to consider packing sunscreen.  It’s also never a bad idea to layer your clothing as temperatures outside may change throughout the day.
• Plan for lunch. Visits often last at least a couple of hours and you’re probably going to get hungry so go ahead and make plans for lunch.  Do you want to try the food you’ll be eating as a UGA student on the meal plan?  Check out the summer schedule for our Dining Halls here .  Visitors are able to pay to eat at one of our award-winning Dining Halls, and it’s all you care to eat!  There are also many great local restaurant options in downtown Athens.

Taking the Campus Tour at UGA

A Tour Can Help You Make Your College Decision

Taking a campus tour is an essential step to help your students decide where they will make their home for the next four years. Some students like to tour before they apply, while others tour schools after they have been accepted. When my daughter was applying to schools, we did both; however, the tours after the acceptance letters were received were very different from the initial visits. Taking the tour after being accepted helps to pinpoint the pertinent things that will help your student make their final decision as to which school to attend. Of course, my daughter loves being a Dawg, but your student may have specific things that will help them weigh out the pros and cons of each college.

Go with a list of questions, but not the kind of questions that you can just google an answer to. Don’t be shy about asking questions to tour guides, financial advisors, specific departments, or even students hanging out on campus. They can be your greatest resources.

Some of the more common questions our interns found important to prospective students are:

• Are you glad you chose UGA? Why did you choose it over other schools you were looking at?
• What is the size of the overall campus?
• What is the size of the dorm rooms and how many people live in each room?
• What food options are available to a freshman?
• What does the meal plan cover and will it fit your diet?
• What are the locations of your “majors” classes?
• What type of technology is used or available in the classrooms/libraries?
• How many printing locations are available? Is it free to print or does it cost money?
• How clean is the campus/restrooms?
• How many gyms are on campus and where are they located?
• How safe are the campus and surrounding neighborhoods?
• How long did it take you to get involved? Have you found places you love being apart of?
• What is the transportation system like? Are there frequent bus stops? Available parking spaces?
• What safety precautions are on campus?

Perhaps Greek life is important to your students. UGA has gorgeous fraternity and sorority houses located mostly on Milledge Avenue and Greek Park Circle, driving up and down these roads can give your student a glimpse into Greek life housing. Perhaps you have a friend who’s son or daughter is a member of a Fraternity or Sorority Life, reach out to them before going, and maybe you can get a tour of their house and a rundown on the membership requirements, involvement, and lifestyle.  You can also stop into the Greek Life Office which is located in the Tate Center and there is always someone available who will be happy to answer any and all questions.

If your student has a health condition that makes having specific Health Center capabilities nearby of great importance; go check it out, there are plenty of people who will answer your health-related questions there. Call in advance to tour the facility. PS. There is a pharmacy there as well, so you can transfer your student’s prescriptions and they are available right on campus.

A UGA campus tour is broken up into two different sections, the first part is a 20-minute information session regarding campus, classes, and admissions. Then you participate in almost an hour-long tour on campus that consists of both walking time and bus time. If you do not want to take a regular tour, UGA offers a self-guided option with a UGA designed map to help you see everything you want to see on campus. You cannot walk into dorms during these tours, so it is best to take advantage of the dorm tour option during orientation as well as the virtual dorm tours online . Take a virtual campus tour .

You may want to visit the registrar’s office located in the Holmes-Hunter Building on North Camps to be sure that your credits would transfer from any AP, IB, or dual enrollment classes too. Perhaps the honors program is more your student’s interest, definitely be sure to ask about this at UGA, if that is the case, try to plan your tour around attending an information session .

The UGA Athletics department is a huge part of campus life. From football to basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track, volleyball, swimming, and more, UGA has it all. Simply by walking around campus, your student should be able to see Sanford Stadium, Foley Field, and Stegeman Coliseum, which are all major sites for sports at UGA. And, if your student is interested in competing but at the club or intramural level, there are tons of different teams for both boys and girls. Overall, there really is no better way to get a sense of how you truly feel about a college until you step foot on campus.

Finally, while I loved UGA as did my daughter, it is important that your student loves UGA. Have them make the most out of their campus tour by asking the necessary questions, visiting places you’re going to be, and getting a feel for your life as a future Dawg!

University system of georgia approves tuition for 2024-2025 academic year.

Atlanta — April 16, 2024

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) voted today to approve tuition rates for the 2024-25 academic year at USG’s 26 public colleges and universities. Systemwide, in-state undergraduate tuition will increase by 2.5%, and out-of-state tuition will increase by 5%. A new, third level of tuition for out-of-country students will also be established at 2% more than the rate for out-of-state students.

This comes as the Board kept tuition flat at all but one USG institution for six of the past eight years. Escalating costs for people, goods and services, increased competition from the private sector for talent and overall inflation have all contributed to growing pressure on institutional budgets, resulting in today’s decision.

USG’s strong commitment to keeping college affordable for students in Georgia has meant average tuition increases for an undergraduate, in-state Georgia student over the past eight years have been less than 1%, well below the rate of inflation.

Two years ago, thanks to the support of Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia General Assembly, the board was able to eliminate a mandatory Special Institutional Fee that students had been charged systemwide since 2009. The fee had been established during the Great Recession to provide financial support to maintain high-quality academic programs and operations during the reductions in state funding.

Coming at the same time as tuition was held flat, the fee’s elimination reduced college costs starting with the 2022-23 academic year and saved students anywhere between $340 to $1,088 for the year, depending on the institution they attended.

“Maintaining affordability is one of the highest priorities of the university system and the Board of Regents,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said. “We are a good deal for Georgians, and we have worked to protect that value particularly for our Georgia undergraduates as we balance affordability with institutional sustainability and academic quality. Our institutions face increasing costs to operate, and we must sustain their momentum as some of the best in the nation at helping students succeed on campus and in the workforce.”

Among the 16 Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) states, Georgia is the third lowest in average undergraduate tuition and required fees compared to its public peers, according to national data from the College Board. College Board data also ranks USG as the sixth lowest in average tuition and fees compared to its peers across the nation, making USG institutions an excellent value for Georgia students and families.

Middle Georgia State University, the only institution to raise tuition during the last academic year, will also be finishing the last of a three-year plan to align its undergraduate tuition with other universities in the same academic sector.

The board today additionally approved changes to the mandatory fee structure at 20 of USG’s 26 institutions to address the significant growth in the number of students taking classes via fully online course delivery.

The approved structure means fully online students will be charged an online learning fee equivalent to their institution’s technology fee, as well as 50% of their institution’s mandatory fees.

This change provides more consistency to the institutional fees for all students. Mandatory fees support and enhance campus programming and student-focused activities, technology and athletic programs – all critical components to the college experience.

Student affordability remains a priority of the Board and USG. Similar to many Georgia families, institutions are experiencing rising costs of goods and services to include escalating costs for technology, software, food, utilities and insurance. Labor costs are also escalating. Additionally, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in FY21, the university system sustained a budget reduction of $230 million.
