It makes sense. Big Sand Lake Lodge offers premiere, complete Canadian fly-in fishing with a comfortable main lodge and remote outposts . Because we’ve practiced catch-and-release conservation for more than 30 years, the fish grow to enormous sizes. So big that it’s possible to earn your Manitoba Master Angler Certificate during any cast.

You choose what you want, and nature supplies the action: Northern Pike ,  Lake Trout ,  Walleye , and  Arctic Grayling . Plus, we treat you right with a classic shore lunch cooked over an open fire on real wood, not propane. As big as the fish are, sometimes it’s the little things that mean so much.

Go for the legendary Canadian Fishing Grand Slam … all four fish species during one trip to Northern Manitoba. Achieve that, and you’ll earn a $500 voucher toward a future Big Sand Lake Lodge visit.

The quintessential Canada experience for Big Sand Lake Lodge guests.

Yep, our lodge is the only one on a  lake that’s never been commercially fished. And, it’s all yours. Our expert guides understand exactly what is happening on the water at any given moment. It’s the fishing that makes a Canada trip so incredible.

Northern Pike Fishing BIG. That’s the best way to begin talking about the monsters lurking within Big Sand Lake and other nearby lakes.

Lake Trout Fishing Trophies live here. Big Sand Lake regularly yields many of the top Lake Trout caught in Manitoba each year. Master Angler size always possible.

Walleye Fishing There must be a million hungry Walleye in Big Sand Lake. You’ll catch a lot and enjoy a bellyful during an open fire shore lunch that caps off your Canada fishing experience.

Arctic Grayling Fishing What a gorgeous fish. Although they’re not easy to find in other lakes, they’re abundant in the rivers and streams connected to Big Sand Lake.

Canada Grand Slam Fishing Few bodies of water allow you to catch all four spectacular species during a single trip to Northern Manitoba. It takes a world-class fishing destination and expert guidance.

CATCHING WALLEYE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

We do the work, so you can catch fish.

If you love to catch walleye, you’re in the right place. Charter fishing for walleye on Lake of the Woods has many advantages. The biggest one is that you don’t need a boat or gear. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned angler, just show up, hop on a boat, and catch fish. Charters are also perfect for a group or family trip. And our boats are big and comfortable. We’ll even clean the fish and have it cooked for you back at the lodge if you like!

Our guides are Professional Coast Guard Licensed Captains with the experience and knowledge to put you on fish. We offer charter trips on our fleet of 27′ Sportcraft boats, allowing up to 6 people per boat. Our standard trip is 9 hours long from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All charter fishing adventures include rods and reels, tackle, bait and fish cleaning and packaging. Guests on our meal plan can enjoy a bag lunch with a large deli sandwich and snacks. We also offer shorelunch at certain times of the season.

If you don’t own a boat, or have never caught a walleye, this is the perfect adventure for you. Come up and fish with us this season!

WALLEYE CHARTER TRIPS

May – october.

Our Walleye charter trips are available from the May Walleye opener through the end of October. You can expect to travel anywhere from 1 mile to 30 miles on a charter. We’ll go where we need to go to put you on fish! Where you fish will also depend on the time of year and the wind direction/weather. Being located on the end of the Rainy River allows us to take guests fishing on the river even when the weather/wind makes the lake nearly unfishable. Our guides are always on the water, ensuring they can put you on a big school of Lake of the Woods Walleye.

GUIDED STURGEON TRIPS

When most all other fishing is closed, the Sturgeon are on the move in the Rainy River. If you have never caught a sturgeon, then put this on your list this year! Nothing compares to catching a giant sturgeon that bends the rod in half and puts up an incredible fight. The spring keep season is from April 24th through May 7th, but catch and release is allowed before and after the season.

There are over 100,000 sturgeon over 40 inches roaming our waters, according to Minnesota DNR. So your chances of tying into one of these giants is pretty good. Our guides have all the gear and know where the fish are.

* Guest will need to purchase a Minnesota fishing license prior to fishing, and a Sturgeon tag is just $5.

Canadian Fishing Trip Preparation: Tackle and Gear for your Fishing Vacation

After many trips north of the border, I have refined my Canadian fishing trip preparation with a tackle and gear list. Allow me to share it with you. The items I recommend are basically the proper fishing gear for Canadian fly-in trips or locations where you will use a camp boat. If towing a boat, the list would be much longer.

Essential tackle for fishing Canada:

  • Passport. You won’t get across the border without it.
  • Drift Sock. Usually, outfitter boats are 14- to 16-feet long, so a smaller, easily packed sock is all you need.
  • Electronics unit. Take the one that shows everything you need to know. Most batteries last many days in warmer months. If you can’t charge batteries, turn the unit off when you don’t absolutely need it.
  • Rods. Limiting the number is the toughest chore for me, but necessary. Take your perfect jigging rod, which you can also use to cast small crankbaits. A medium-heavy spinning rod 7 or 7 1/2-feet long works for twitch baits, jigging, bigger cranks, live-bait rigging or surface lures. If giant pike and muskies are present, take a muskie/pike casting rod and a few Mepps, Suicks, big Rapalas, large deep-diving Yo-Zuri cranks and Northland Bionic spinnerbaits. Pack a few large spoons, too.
  • My favorite Husky Jerks always go to Canada with me. I bring an X-Rap or two just in case.
  • Mandatory: Jigging Raps, Vexan Crystal Reapers, Shiver Minnows, Custom Jigs Rotating Power Minnows, Northland Puppet Minnows and Lunkerhunt straight-up glide baits.
  • An extra spool filled with line for each reel. Take an extra reel. Pack a 300-yard spool of the line you’ll use most.
  • Plastics. For 1/8- and 1/4-ounce jigs, the 3-, 4- and 5-inch plastics from so many companies catch all the smallies, walleyes and even pike you could ever hope for. Northland Slurpies, Custom Jigs & Spins Ringworms, Gulp, PowerBait, Lunkerhunt Bentos or your other favorites will be just what the doctor ordered. Ringworms, paddle tails and grub tails are all good.

Check on the use of live bait. If live bait increases your confidence level (and it’s legal where you’re going), fine. But, I haven’t taken or used bait in Canada for decades. Remember, if you plan to bring live bait, you’ll also have to include ways to keep the bait alive and wriggling in your tackle and gear.

Essential Lures to catch fish in Canada:

  • A selection of crankbaits. Bagley, Rapala, Bay Rat and Yo-Zuri are my favorites. Select some that run shallow for early in the year or when waves crash shorelines, islands, points or reefs. Take some lures that can run down to 20 feet.
  • Bottom bouncers with spinner harnesses and 6-inch plastic worms.
  • Topwater lures.
  • Wire leaders (pre-made), or tie your own with Tyger wire or Cortland Critter wire. I always use wire, because pike like to eat whatever I throw. I tie direct to jigs, but create my own 15-pound crankbait leaders with a swivel on one end and a snap on the other.

Make sure spinnerbaits have a closed-loop line tie. The bass-style spinnerbaits with an “R” bend don’t work well with wire leaders.

Check hook restrictions. Some regions require single hooks, not trebles. Many areas and entire provinces specify barbless hooks on the lures on the end of your rod. Crimp down barbs with a needle-nose pliers. Make sure all your tackle and gear is in top condition before heading out.

Are you enjoying this post?

You can be among the first to get the latest info on where to go, what to use and how to use it!

Essential gear for Canadian Fishing Trip

  • Miscellaneous items: Pliers, hook remover, mouth-spreader, hook sharpener, filet knife, jack knife, camera, measuring tape, foldable net, sunscreen, polaroid sunglasses, rain gear, hand-held GPS and extra batteries, compass, watch, case of water, turtle-neck, Under Armour long john tops and bottoms, hoodie, wind pants, flannel shirt.
  • Plastic trays for packing gear and tackle. Tape trays with duct tape for safe travel.
  • An extra pair of reading glasses. I need them so I recommend extras.

Keep it underweight and keep in touch!

You would be amazed how all this gear can be condensed into the weight requirements for a fly-in. It’s easy to lug around, too. Take photos of everything and share your amazing adventure with everybody!

So gear up and get ready for the ultimate fishing expedition.

Before we delve into the specifics of Canada fly-in fishing trips, let’s establish what exactly constitutes a fly-in fishing trip. Simply, it involves traveling to remote, secluded locations by air and fishing in untouched waters inaccessible by road. These fishing trips are typically organized by outfitters who provide all the necessary amenities, including accommodations, fishing gear, and experienced guides.

But what makes a Canada fly-in fishing trip so special? Let’s explore the advantages in more detail.

Lake Sunset on the Cobham. Canada Fly-in Fishing Trips.

Imagine soaring above vast landscapes, witnessing breathtaking views of untouched wilderness, and landing in a place where the only sounds you hear are the gentle rustling of leaves and the soothing flow of crystal-clear waters. This is the essence of a Canada fly-in fishing trip.

There are several reasons why Canadian fly-in fishing trips are a popular choice among anglers. First and foremost, the seclusion provided by these remote locations allows for an unparalleled fishing experience. Without the disturbance of crowds or other fishing enthusiasts, anglers can connect with nature and focus solely on pursuing their trophy catch.

Picture yourself casting your line into a pristine lake surrounded by untouched wilderness. The tranquility and solitude create the perfect environment for reflection and relaxation. It’s not just about catching fish; it’s about immersing yourself in the beauty of nature and finding inner peace.

Unveiling the Majestic Northern Pike: Explore Canada Fly-in Fishing Trips

As you navigate through the winding rivers and explore hidden bays, you’ll encounter diverse fish habitats. Each cast brings the anticipation of a potential trophy catch, and the thrill of reeling in a feisty fish is unmatched.

Add to this the breathtaking scenery, the tranquility of the wilderness, and the chance to explore uncharted territories, and it becomes clear why so many fishermen are drawn to the allure of a Canada fly-in fishing trip.

Imagine waking up to birds chirping, stepping outside your cabin, and being greeted by lush forest reflected in the calm waters. The air is crisp, the scent of pine fills your nostrils, and you can’t help but feel a sense of awe at the beauty surrounding you.

Whether you’re an experienced angler looking for a new challenge or a novice seeking an unforgettable adventure, a fly-in fishing trip offers an escape from the ordinary. It’s a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature in its purest form.

So, if you’re ready to embark on a journey of exploration, challenge, and serenity, consider a Canada fly-in fishing trip. It’s an experience that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

When it comes to fly-in fishing, Canada boasts some of the most sought-after destinations in the world. Let’s take a closer look at three of the top destinations that promise unforgettable fishing experiences.

British Columbia’s Hidden Gems

Remote British Colombia Canada fly-in fishing trip

Imagine embarking on a floatplane adventure, soaring above the majestic peaks of the Coastal Range, and landing on a remote lake where the only sounds you hear are the gentle lapping of the water and the calls of the wild. You can feel the anticipation building as you cast your line into the crystal-clear depths. Will you hook that trophy-sized Chinook Salmon? Or perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to reel in a vibrant Rainbow Trout, known for its acrobatic leaps and fierce fights.

But fly-in fishing in British Columbia is not just about the fish. It’s about immersing yourself in the untouched beauty of nature. Picture yourself surrounded by towering cedar and fir trees, their branches swaying in the breeze. The air is crisp and invigorating, and the scent of pine fills your lungs. Exploring the shoreline, you may encounter various wildlife, from majestic bald eagles soaring overhead to curious black bears ambling along the water’s edge.

Manitoba’s Wild and Pristine Landscape

Calm Sunset with beautiful river reflection

Manitoba’s remote lakes and rivers offer solitude and serenity. Imagine paddling through a tranquil river, surrounded by dense forests and the soothing sounds of nature. As you navigate through the winding channels, you may stumble upon a hidden cove, where schools of Smallmouth Bass eagerly await your bait. Or perhaps you’ll encounter a secluded bay where Northern Pike lurks in the shadows, ready to ambush their prey.

The beauty of fly-in fishing in Manitoba is that there’s always something new to discover. From a lake’s vastness to remote rivers’ solitude, the choices are as diverse as the fish. It’s a place where the serenity of the wilderness meets the excitement of the catch, where each cast of your line is an opportunity to connect with nature and create lasting memories.

Quebec’s Bountiful Lakes

For anglers craving a true wilderness adventure, Quebec’s fly-in fishing opportunities are hard to beat. With its vast territory and unspoiled lakes, this province offers a haven for fishing enthusiasts. From Lac La Martre’s crystal-clear waters to Labrador’s remote landscapes, Quebec promises exhilarating fishing experiences that will leave you in awe.

Picture yourself standing on the shores of Lac La Martre, surrounded by pristine wilderness. The lake stretches out before you, its surface reflecting the vibrant hues of the surrounding forest. As you cast your line, you can feel the excitement building. Will you be able to entice a massive Lake Trout to strike? Or perhaps you’ll have the opportunity to battle with a feisty Arctic Char, known for their strength and determination.

But Quebec’s fly-in fishing adventures are not just about the fish. It’s about the journey – the thrill of flying over vast expanses of untouched wilderness, the sense of awe as you witness the rugged beauty of the Canadian North. Now that we’ve piqued your interest in Canada fly-in fishing trips, let’s delve into the essential preparations you must make before embarking on your adventure.

Embarking on a fly-in fishing trip is an exciting endeavor that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while pursuing your passion for fishing. However, proper preparation is key to ensuring a successful and enjoyable experience. From gathering the necessary gear to prioritizing safety measures, here are some tips to help you make the most of your fly-in fishing trip.

Essential Gear for Fly-in Fishing

From sustainability to customization, explore the exciting fishing gear trends of 2023

Before you embark on your Canada fly-in fishing trip, it’s a good idea to research the specific fishing regulations and guidelines for the area you’ll be visiting. This will ensure you have the appropriate gear and adhere to size or catch limits. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the local fishing techniques and strategies that will increase your chances of success.

As you gather your gear, consider the type of fishing you’ll be doing. Lightweight and portable gear will be essential to fish in remote lakes or rivers. On the other hand, sturdy and heavy-duty equipment may be necessary to target larger species in open waters.

Safety Measures and Precautions

While fly-in fishing trips promise thrilling adventures, it’s crucial to prioritize safety. Before setting off, familiarize yourself with the safety measures experienced anglers and outfitters recommended. This may include being aware of your surroundings, carrying essential safety equipment, and understanding the potential risks of wilderness travel. Additionally, respecting the environment and fishing regulations ensures the sustainability of these pristine ecosystems for future generations.

One important safety measure is having a readily available first aid kit . Accidents can happen, and being prepared with basic medical supplies can make a significant difference in emergencies. It’s also advisable to inform someone trustworthy about your travel plans, including your expected return date and the location you’ll be visiting. This way, if unforeseen circumstances arise, help can be promptly alerted.

Furthermore, being mindful of the weather conditions during your fly-in fishing trip is essential. While nature’s beauty can be awe-inspiring, it can also be unpredictable. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and be prepared for sudden temperature, wind, or precipitation changes. Dressing in layers will allow you to adjust your clothing accordingly and stay comfortable throughout your adventure.

Lastly, practicing catch-and-release fishing techniques is an excellent way to contribute to conserving fish populations. By releasing fish unharmed, you ensure their survival and the sustainability of the ecosystem. Remember to handle fish gently, use appropriate tools for hook removal, and minimize the time they spend out of the water.

Following these essential tips and taking the necessary precautions will prepare you for your fly-in fishing trip. So pack your gear, prioritize safety, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure in the great outdoors!

To truly make the most of your fly-in fishing trip, it’s important to consider a few key factors.

Best Seasons for Fly-in Fishing

Choosing the best time to embark on your fly-in fishing adventure can greatly enhance your chances of a successful trip. Research the target species and their seasonal patterns to determine the optimum time to visit. Whether you prefer the thrill of spring Pike fishing or the tranquility of fall Trout fishing, picking the right season will greatly increase your chances of landing that trophy catch.

Species to Target on Your Trip

The diverse waters of Canada offer a plethora of fish species to target during your fly-in fishing excursion. From the aggressive Smallmouth Bass to the elusive Arctic Char, each species presents its unique challenges and rewards. Research the local fish populations and consult with experienced anglers to identify your desired target species and their preferred habitats.

Now that you’ve gathered all the necessary information to embark on your Canada fly-in fishing adventure, it’s time to book your trip.

Choosing the Right Package

When selecting a fly-in fishing trip package, consider factors such as the duration of your stay, the included amenities, the fishing locations, and the reputation of the outfitter. Carefully review the packages various outfitters offer to find the one that best suits your preferences and budget.

What to Expect from Your Booking

From the moment you touch down in the remote wilderness, you’ll be greeted by experienced guides who will assist you in making the most of your fishing experience. I would prefer a less than 12 hr drive from Minneapolis, fly in from there, no american plan, 5 day trip, accomodate 6 people, walleye and northern action REQUIRED.

Any resort on Lac Seul in Ontario 9-10 hour drive from the cities. Great walleye and Jack action!

Dan97

Lac Seul is a good bet. Also a bit south of there is Lake Wabaskang. Same road as the resorts on Lac Seul, just not as far north. I've been going to that area for many years and have yet to be let down.

Need details? Drop me an email.

Vikes, Check out Pickerel Arm Camp. From their main camp they have many fly in options. We go to Fawcett Lake, but I've heard that Springpole is also very good.

Good Luck, Scott

(Canada) Goosin’ Around in Minnesota

A large bird with a black head and a small white patch near its eye, brown body, white rump and dark grey tailfeathers flies low over a body of water. The water is bluish, with brownish-tan plants visible out of focus in the background

Near Extinction

Although the population would deceive you, there was a time in the not-so-distant past where seeing a Canada goose was rare. In the early 1900s, a combination of habitat loss, such as wetland draining, and a lack of hunting regulations had resulted in near-complete extinction of the bird from Minnesota. One of the subspecies, the giant Canada goose, was even believed to be completely extinct.

Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 was one of the first remedies for the overhunting of all migratory birds, including the Canada goose. This Act made it unlawful to hunt, kill, purchase or sell any migratory bird, their nests, or even their eggs, unless otherwise authorized under a special permit. This Act gave geese a brief head start, and this, in combination with an increase of fields and lawns due to a boom in the human population, worked well for the Canada goose population.

2 Canada geese, which are large birds with black heads with a white section below their eyes, a brown backside and black-tipped white tail, are swimming close to each other. One goose is closer to the camera, and one is further away. The goose that is further away has its head above the goose that is closer as if it is resting its head on the other.

Rochester: Goose Love Affair

When the Mayo Clinic opened in Rochester, MN in the 1920s, the Mayo family brought more than just their medical practice. They also brought 15 Canada geese to keep on their own land. Dr. Charles Mayo dabbled in conservationism and, with the decline in the Canada goose population, he enjoyed having the ability to feed this elusive species while on walking the grounds of his own home.

This 15-bird flock did not stay small for long. They attracted migrating geese, and it quickly grew to around 600, including the rediscovered giant subspecies, which was confirmed in 1962.  These geese moved into Silver Lake, MN and became a staple for both residents of Rochester and patients at Mayo Clinic. Eventually a powerplant started using Silver Lake as a location to transfer heat from their machinery. While not generally great for wildlife, this actually prevented the lake from freezing over and meant the goose population had and continue to have open water throughout the winter. This in turn makes it so that the geese do not need to migrate to find food, and this is reflected in a large year-round population of geese found in Rochester.

Other Methods

Aside from Rochester’s love for the goose, more efforts were utilized throughout Minnesota to bring back the geese. In the 1950s, Canada geese were bred and reintroduced to the wild in Minnesota. Conservationists hoped they would establish a resident population and not merely rely upon the migrating population using the areas as a stopover on their way south. In the 1970s, Professor Jim Cooper from the University of Minnesota got involved, hoping to establish populations of Canada geese within the Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area. These plans were too successful however, and in the late 70s and early 80s the Canada goose population grew rapidly due to being well equipped to thrive in the low-cut grass of our parks and lawns. Professor Jim Cooper and his students had to pivot toward helping round up geese in Minneapolis, in order to send them to other parts of Minnesota that were still working on their own goose populations. As geese became established in more areas, it became difficult to find anywhere that would take the extra individuals, and USFWS began issuing permits to capture and send geese to be processed for food shelves. These roundups have lessened now that the goose population has stabilized at a more manageable number.

From Reintroduction to Population Control

two geese, with black heads and brown bodies swim on the left side of the photo. They are facing the right side of the photograph.

With a stable population, Canada geese are no longer under threat of extinction and are a part of the waterfowl hunting season every year. To manage their population, there is a hunting season for geese from early September through December depending on the permit you possess. Always check hunting regulations to determine what the bag limit is and what species are in or out of season. For more information on hunting at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge and Wetland Management District please see the regulations page for hunting activities, linked here. To view these comeback birds, feel free to come visit any of the wetlands on refuge, such as at our Bass Ponds, Old Cedar Avenue and Wilkie trailheads, to attempt a glimpse of the elusive Canada goose.
