River Cruises on the Meuse
River cruises on the meuse, river cruise on the meuse river in limburg.
When thinking of Limburg, one might not think of going on a river cruise. But did you know that the Maasplassen  area offers various mooring places for river cruise ships? There are landing stages in Roermond and Thorn.
Possibilities in Roermond
In Roermond in particular, the facilities for river cruise ships are optimal. The existing mooring places have been renovated and can accommodate two ships (each up to 135 metres) at the same time. Large coaches can also park in the immediate vicinity. The historic centre of Roermond and Designer Outlet Roermond are within walking distance of the Roermond cruise terminal.
Thorn can accommodate one cruise ship of up to 110 metres.
The Meuse and the ''Maasplassen'' (lakes)
The Maas is extremely suitable for river cruise ships and is an attractive addition to the existing Rhine and Waal routes. Feenstra , Cultural Cruises Europe  and Boat Bike Tours have already discovered the charms of the Maasplassen. The many tourist attractions in Limburg, contribute to an unforgettable visit for your passengers.

Ardennes & River Meuse cruise
- Boating Holidays
Departing from our base in Pont Ă Bar, operated by our partner Ardennes Nautisme, turn northwards to cross the Belgian border or head towards the Meuse Canal to explore Verdun.
Boat hire to discover the Ardennes forest in a few words…
The Ardennes forest is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Roe and red deer, wild boar, and some very rare birds can be found alongside a range of flora that is just as surprising in its protected marshland. Here you can still find carnivorous plants and a superb orchid. As you follow the Meuse, you will encounter its delightfully crazy meanderings that will finally lead you to Charleville-Mézières, birthplace of the poet Arthur Rimbaud. The famous Place Ducale is a jewel of Renaissance architecture, whilst the Basilica of NotreDame swings between that same style and Flamboyant Gothic. Among the delights of the Basilica of Notre-Dame d’Espérance are the little back streets that surround it. Deeper into the Ardennes, there are delightful towns such as Fumay and Givet, known for their sausages. With its 650 km of cruising waterway, the Champagne Ardennes region offers tremendous diversity and variety.
The highlights of Pont Ă Bar
- Easy access by boat to the Ardennes forest, one of the ‘lungs of Europe’
- Very diverse flora and fauna
our routes departing from Pont Ă Bar
The routes shown are only suggestions; don’t forget that you can stop wherever you like on your cruise.
On the battlefields routes
Explore Europe’s most extensive fortress, the Château Haut, and the many religious buildings. Sedan is listed as a Town of Art and History.
Situated at the gateway to Lorraine, Belgium and Luxembourg, the Ardennes town of Mouzon takes its name from Mosomagos, which means "market on the Meuse" in Celtic. The must-see on your boat cruise: the abbey church, the former abbey and its gardens.
Verdun, sadly memorable for the great WWI battle, stands 40 km from the Belgian border. A stop on your cruise will allow you to learn some history and sample dragées (sugared almonds), the local speciality.
Like a Bohemian on the inland waterways
Charleville-Mezières, a magnificent town in the Ardennes, has several must-see attractions, including the Rimbaud Museum (Rimbaud was born here) and the basilica of Notre-Dame d'Espérance. And don’t forget to stroll through the Place Ducale
Sometimes called the “slate village” in memory of its past, Fumay sits in the loop of the Meuse. Tie up your license-free boat here for lovely forest walks and maybe sample the local speciality, white pudding.
Dinant is a Belgian town not far from the French border, on the banks of the Meuse and at the foot of steep cliffs. Don’t miss the fortified citadel, a place to take photos of the breathtaking landscape.
Namur is the capital of Belgium’s Walloon region. Here, you’ll find a citadel with amazing panoramic views and the Félicien Rops Museum, which exhibits erotic works dating from the 19th century.
Spectacular scenery and the Ducal Square
Rich is the history of the city, at the bend of its alleys, numerous in the Vieux Revin. Some lead to the Quai des Bateliers and its timber-framed houses, others to the Dominican church and its former convent.
With its attractive houses, a citadel and many religious buildings, Givet is a lovely place to moor your self-drive boat. Explore the Charlemont fort, built by Emperor Charles V in the 16th century and strengthened by Vauban in the 17th.

Treat yourself to a River Meuse cruise through the Ardenne and Grand Est
Follow the canal de la meuse in any direction.
The beautifully forested area of the Ardenne has captivated Europeans for centuries. After all, it is one of the last truly untouched patches of woodland in western Europe, punctuated only by the odd acre of farmland. The woodland that stands close to the Meuse is home to a variety of wildlife, including roe deer and wild boar, only adding to the magical woodland feel of this part of northern France.
To explore this picturesque region by boat is to immerse yourself entirely in the sights and smells of the Ardenne and its surrounding landscape. The best place to start a Meuse river cruise is from the small riverside commune town of Pont Ă Bar.
Pont à Bar gives holidaymakers the chance to explore north deeper into the Belgian forests of the Ardenne or south into France’s Grand Est and Lorraine regions. Locaboat’s base at Pont à Bar allows boaters to fly into Metz and Reims, not too far away, making it an excellent River Meuse port to begin from.
Both of these routes offer their own delights and interests, whether that be the simple joy of rare bird watching, deer spotting or the tranquillity of the woodland river routes in the Meuse valley . Alternatively, opt for a moving visit to some of France’s most infamous First World War battlegrounds around Verdun or simply soak up the many villages that stand along the Meuse; the choice is yours.
Navigate your Meuse river boat south from Pont Ă Bar
On leaving Pont Ă Bar, you can take your canal boat and begin your River Meuse cruise by heading southeast, towards the town of Sedan. Officially listed as a town of art and history, Sedan truly lives up to this reputation. Protected by this official status, building and modern development in Sedan are strictly controlled, allowing its idyllic and historic surroundings to be preserved for generations to come.
One of Sedan’s most famous historic monuments is its 15th-century medieval castle, a sight that dominates the town. Covering more than seven acres, Sedan castle is one the largest fortified chateaus in all of Europe and is a must-see when in the town.
Apart from the castle, the historical centre of Sedan has been preserved beautifully, and with a range of townhouses, cafes and restaurants, its centre is a fantastic place to stop for a bite to eat or drink, watching the world go by.
Following your canal boat hire through France , you will pass on from Sedan and back on the open waterways. The first commune town you will arrive at after Sedan is the town of Mouzon. Mouzon is an idyllic riverside town that looks as though it has fallen straight out of a postcard picture and its rich architecture and winding streets invite you in to explore on foot some more. Standing in the centre of town is the awe-inspiring 13th-century Gothic abbey church. With delicately carved facades and jaw-dropping interior, the church is truly a sight to behold.
Immerse yourself in French history and explore the battlefields of Verdun
Following the winding course of the River Meuse south, you will pass by small idyllic villages, rolling farmland and wooded copses on the river banks, eventually arriving in the small city of Verdun. It’s hard to imagine that this paradise of rivers and farmland was once the site of the longest battle of the First World War and one of the costliest in military history.
Throughout 1916, over one hundred years ago, the bastion town of Verdun and its surrounding area became a killing field of destruction as the armies of France and Germany battled it out, turning the land into a lunar landscape and costing the lives of over 300,000 men, with hundreds of thousands more wounded.
Now covered in rolling farmland forest of trees, it’s hard to believe the number of artillery shells, bullets and human remains that still litter the area around Verdun. As a visitor, you can walk the battlefields, visit the cemeteries and try to square the beautiful countryside you see before you with the horrors that took place here over one hundred years ago.
The Verdun memorial and the remains of Deumamont fort are some of the more interesting places to visit around Verdun, giving you an insight into the battle fort here. Apart from its place in French military history, Verdun is also a modern city with its own series of attractions. If military history isn’t quite your thing, Verdun offers a range of attractions, including the city’s numerous cafes, bistros and delicatessens selling the famous Verdun Braquier sugared almonds.
Sail your way north through the Meuse valley and Belgium’s countryside
Choosing to take the meuse river north.
Aside from travelling south along the Canal des Ardennes and Meuse River to the south, you can also trundle north through the Meuse River valley and cross over the French – Belgian border. Before you arrive at such an international point, there is plenty to pleasantly distract you along the French waterways. Leaving the Locaboat base at Pont Ă Bar you can take your boat a little further north until you enter the commune town of Charleville-MĂ©zières. Entering such a beautiful town through its waterways is a whole different experience, and it’s this that makes boating holidays in France that extra bit special.
The small town of Charleville-Mézières is renowned for a few different things. First off, Charleville-Mézières is the headquarters for the International Puppetry Association and holds an International Puppet Festival here every three years.
Aside from its association with puppetry, Charleville-MĂ©zières is also the birthplace of French poet Arthur Rimbaud. You’ll find a museum in town dedicated to the man himself which gives you a glimpse into his life and works – a must-see for any fan of literature and poetry.
Walking through town, you will also come across a beautifully constructed church, the Notre-Dame d’EspĂ©rance. A perfect example of Catholic architecture, the church is home to an array of stained glass and carved facades, making it a must-see when in the town. Step out the church and into the equally jaw-dropping Panorama of Place Ducale – a delectable square of buildings and cobbled courtyards, just what you want out of a Franco exploration.
Explore quaint riverside communes, just moments away from the Belgian border
Passing further north out of Charleville-Mézières, you will come to a bend in the Muse and arrive in the idyllic town of Revin. Revin is home to many likeable sights, making it an almost cliche of a picturesque riverside town, something that only endears visitors to the town. The one building that really personifies this old-world picturesque commune town is the building known as the Spanish House of Revin.
Constructed in the early 16th century, this house has stood for over five hundred years and has lived to tell the tale. From chunky crossbeams and Turdoresuqe facade, this building is really a time capsule of medieval Revlin and now houses the town’ museum.
After getting your fill of the charming riverside commune of Revin, you should follow the river north, edging ever closer to the border. Before you arrive on Belgian soil, or water, to be more precise, boaters should not bypass the village of Fumay. Known as a slate village, Fumay was a huge slate quarrying village; now it remains elegantly untouched by industry and is renowned for its local delicacy of white pudding.
Arriving at the final French stop of Givet, you might want to explore this last bit of La République Française before heading over the border. Givet is dominated by the fortress of Charlemont, a 16th-century castle of awe-inspiring proportions, similar to that of Carcassonne on the Canal du Midi . Aside from its heretical buildings, a quick delve into the town will reveal a plethora of attractions including the famous Onion Fair.
Crossing the border, from France and into Belgium
Flowing ever northwards on its way to the north sea, the Meuse River takes its cruisers over the French borders and into Belgium. The first of the Belgian towns worth stopping off in is the town of Dinant. When you take your Dinant boat through town, you’ll notice that this is a popular destination for fellow boaters. In fact, you can even hire a Dinant boat rental to explore the upper Meuse valley in all of its glory.
Surrounded by high cliffed banks, it is no surprise that an expansive cave system was discovered here in the early 20th century. Now known as the Grotte la Merveilleuse, these caves are worth exploring. The multi-coloured stalactites that hang from the grotto walls give the Grotte la Merveilleuse an otherworldly and magical feel.
Emerging from the dark, you may wish to do something a bit more freeing and illuminating; this is where the Parc de Furfooz comes in. This nature reserve is bled of meadows, nature walks, forests and Palaeolithic walkways – a real adventure for any nature lovers!
Your final Belgian destination on the upper Meuse valley is the city of Namur, the capital of the Wallonia region of Belgium. Namur boats and Namur boat rentals are also popular in the city, making it a great place to start and end your River Meuse Cruise. If you are not all castled- and cathedraled-out, Namur is most famous for its UNESCO St Aubin’s Cathedral and citadel and is well worth a visit when in the town.

Venlo is a Meuse River (Rur-Roer River) cruise port and city in southeastern Holland (Netherlands' Limburg Province) with population around 100,000. Meuse/Maas River originates in France and flows through Belgium and Holland, and (via Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta) drains into North Sea.
The settlement (as Sablones) was found by the Romans on a road linking Maastricht (Holland) with Xanten (Germany) . In the 9th century, Venlo was first mentioned (as a trading post) and soon developed into an important town. It received city rights in the mid-14th-century (1343) and joined the Hanseatic League (Deutsche Hanse/Hansa - commercial and defensive confederation of market towns) in 1375. In 1713, the city became part of the Netherlands.
Venlo is very close to the Holland-Germany border and is connected by two highways/Autobahns (A-40 and A-61) directly to Dusseldorf , Duisburg and Cologne . AÂ railway provides regularly scheduled train connections to Eindhoven, Roermond and Nijmegen and also to Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia state) via Kaldenkirchen to Dusseldorf and Hamm.
As cruise port, Venlo is included in the schedule of Phoenix Reisen with the riverboat Rhein Prinzessin . Next table shows the ship's 7-day "The Rhine with Rhein Prinzessin" cruisetour itinerary roundtrip from Germany.
Prices start from ~EUR 800/ ~USD 980 per person with double occupancy.

City Highlights
Amsterdam is one of those cities that every traveler should have visited at least once in his life. No wonder, every year millions upon millions of tourists flock to the city on the canals to enjoy the flood of sights and cultural offerings. The best way to discover Amsterdam is by taking a boat ride along the canals or a walk along the unique canals. Art lovers will be immediately drawn to one of the world-famous museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum or the Van Gogh Museum. Party people will find their happiness in the nightlife and red light district De Wallen. And beer drinkers should by no means miss the Heineken Experience.
The oldest city in the Netherlands exudes original Dutch flair with gabled little houses, small cheese shops and delicacies on the "Grote Markt". In the narrow streets, yesterday and today go hand in hand. Therefore, a visit to the Gothic St. Stevenskerk, including the burial cellar, as well as a stroll along the shopping street "Lange Hezelstraat" should be on the sightseeing plan. With freshly fried Kibbelingen in the wintry Kronenburgerpark can be perfectly paused afterwards.
You should definitely use the stopover in Utrecht to take a look at this beautiful Dutch city at your leisure. Whether you visit the famous Centraal Museum for ancient and modern art or prefer to discover the provincial capital on a leisurely canal cruise from the water - the historic architecture and the many lovingly restored houses will inspire you. In the center of the city, the landmark of Utrecht, the 112 m high Utrecht Cathedral, watches over the city. It was built between 1321 and 1382 and is considered the oldest and highest church tower in the Netherlands. If you climb the 465 steps, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view. If you like it more contemplative, just take a nice stroll through the alleys and typical Nierderland courtyards that Utrecht is known for. Or how about a visit to the colorful flower market? Utrecht is always worth a visit.
The Dutch city of Dordrecht is a former trading city thanks to its location on the water. This past can still be felt in the town today. Be it in the historic city center, at the harbor or even in one of the several museums. Also worth seeing is the "Grote Kerk" and the Augustinian monastery of the 13th century. A walk through Dordrecht is the best way to discover the history of the place.
The port city of Rotterdam is located in the Netherlands and is one of the most interesting places in the world. The modern architecture is significantly involved in this. Among the impressive sights is the horseshoe-shaped market hall with the huge range of goods and the colorful hustle and bustle. In the old harbor with the striking white house, historic ships can be marveled at. For strolling, shopping and partying, the shopping mile Witte de Withstraat is an attraction. The futuristic-looking main station, the bag, also invites to the pub crawl and shopping.
Emmerich is located on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a beautiful Rhine bridge, but also the Eltenberg, as a local mountain. Still in addition, there is a Rhine promenade for walking and strolling. If you want to know more about the art of coffee, you can visit the Museum of Coffee Technology, which is famous for the city of Emmrich. Nearby is the city of Kleve, which is also very worth seeing with its Swan Castle, the zoo and the historic gardens.
Maastricht is a university city in the extreme south of the Netherlands. The city is characterized by its medieval architecture and lively cultural scene. The cobblestone old town is home to the Gothic Church of St. John (Sint Janskerk) and the Romanesque Basilica of St. Servatius, with its important collection of sacred art. On the banks of the Maas River, which flows through the city center, stands the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum of Fine Art.
Roermond is a city and municipality with 58,806 inhabitants in the Dutch province of Limburg, which lies on the border with Germany and near Belgium. Roermond is best known for the Designer Outlet Center, where there are a lot of special discounts on exclusive brands and selected clothing. Directly connected to the outlet center is the city center of Roermond. Here you can walk relaxed between small boutiques and quaint cafes.
Next to Roermond is the city of Venlo, which has 101,984 citizens, almost twice as many inhabitants as the neighboring city. Small stores within the center are perfect for a shopping trip. If you are looking for art and culture, you should visit the Limburg Museum, which tells a lot about the people of Limburg and the culture. Another point of reference is the Oude Markt in downtown Venlo, where you can find many restaurants that can be recommended especially if you long for a delicious wine in the sunny Netherlands.
Located in the province of Noord-Holland, Alkmaar in the Netherlands is also known as the cheese city of Holland. You should therefore plan a visit to the traditional cheese market as well as a visit to the cheese museum. Alkmaar also has a historic city center with many shops, cafes and restaurants. You can easily explore Alkmaar on foot. Even more beautiful, however, is a round trip along one of the canals, because similar to Amsterdam, Alkmaar is also known as a canal city. In one of the typical Giethoornse Punter you sail under the numerous bridges and have enough opportunity to discover the many monuments of the city. Back on solid ground, we still recommend a visit to the Beatles Museum in Alkmaar. In addition to the Cheese Museum, which gives a closer look at cheese production, the Beatles Museum is another much-visited attraction in Alkmaar. If you then still have a little time, you can start for a bike ride to the nearby beach.
Description and info of river cruises in the Netherlands
On this river cruise through the Netherlands you will get to know three of the most beautiful and important cities in the country. From DĂĽsseldorf you will first visit beautiful Amsterdam, the largest and also most unique city in the country. During a boat trip over the world-famous canals of Amsterdam, you will not be able to get out of the amazement. Enjoy the countless small canals with their picturesque bridges and magnificent town houses along the banks. With its world-famous art museums, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam is also always worth a visit for art fans. The second stop on the trip is Rotterdam, which as the second largest city in the Netherlands is a modern contrast to historic Amsterdam. The highlight of a visit to Rotterdam is undoubtedly a harbor cruise, during which you will get to know the largest and busiest port in Europe. Third and final shore visit of your cruise through Holland is Arnhem. Although not as well known to tourists as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the capital of the province of Gelderland is still worth a visit. Fashionistas will have their true joy at the numerous boutiques in the Modekwartier. And animal lovers will spend a great day in the country's most famous zoo, Burgers' Zoo.
This river cruise through Holland and Belgium takes you to three of the largest metropolises in the two Benelux countries. From DĂĽsseldorf, you will first head downriver to Amsterdam. The charm of the largest city in the Netherlands is its unique canal belt, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance. Discover the city's many narrow and crooked historic buildings on the waterfront during a walk, bike ride or boat tour. From Amsterdam, continue your journey to Antwerp. The vibrant metropolis of Flanders combines history and modernity in a more harmonious way than almost any other city in Europe. Here, centuries-old buildings such as the Church of Our Lady, the Steen Castle and the magnificent houses on the Grote Markt combine with many examples of modern architecture, such as the Museum aan het Stroom. Here, old Flemish masters meet a very lively contemporary art scene in the city's art museums. And don't forget to sample one of Flanders' hundreds of beers while in Antwerp. The final stop on your river cruise through Holland and Belgium is modern Rotterdam. At the mouth of the Rhine into the North Sea, you will experience not only Europe's largest port, but also hypermodern architecture and a very interesting gastronomic offer.
On this river cruise through the Netherlands, you'll immerse yourself in some of the country's oldest and most beautiful cities. First stop of the cruise is Nijmegen, the oldest city in the country. Main sights of Nijmegen are the Stevenskerk and the market square with the Boterwaag, the Sint-Stevenspoortje and numerous beautiful town houses. From Nijmegen, you will cross the Maas River to Maastricht, the southernmost city in the Netherlands. Maastricht is not only known for its beautifully preserved city center with the Romanesque St. Servatius Basilica and the Gothic St. Janskerk, but is also popular for its southern flair. Downstream on the Maas River, the tour continues via Roermond, with its many small boutiques and quaint cafés, to Venlo, where you should have seen the Old Town Hall and the Limburg Museum. Children will love to spend their day in Venlo at the amusement park Toverland or the play park Klein Zwitserland. Via the old fortified town of Gorinchem, you will continue your river cruise to Dordrecht - one of the oldest cities in Holland - which exudes the typical charm of the country with its numerous waterways. Don't miss a visit to the Grote Kerk, the highly praised collection of paintings in the Dordrechts Museum and the Augustinian monastery Het Hof. Your journey on the Rhine and Meuse concludes in Arnhem, which is best known as a museum city. Here you will be spoilt for choice between the wine museum, the water museum and the open-air museum.
This river cruise through Holland and Belgium is a voyage of discovery to some of the most beautiful cities in the two Benelux countries. Starting in DĂĽsseldorf, you will depart for Amsterdam, where you can enjoy the world's unique charm of Holland's largest city along the canal belt. The mixture of dozens of small canals, hundreds of bridges and countless crooked houses makes Amsterdam such a special city. But also the art and shopping scene of Amsterdam are among the best in Europe. Afterwards you will get to know Hoorn, a typical Dutch coastal town on the shores of the Ijsselmeer. In this charming harbor town, you will breathe in the flair of Holland's Golden Age and experience maritime history at every turn. Set sail from Hoorn on a sailboat or take a trip on a small steam train. From Hoorn, travel on to Rotterdam, Holland's largest port city, where you can also experience the largest port in Europe. A boat trip along the miles of wharves is a very special event. Next shore leave is Ghent. In the Flanders university town, you will hardly be able to decide what to do first: a tour of the massive Count's Castle, the majestic St. Bavo's Cathedral or the picturesque Belfry. Or perhaps you would prefer a stroll along the waterfront, along the Graslei and the Korenlei. The medieval city center of Ghent is without a doubt one of the most beautiful old towns in Europe. You will also experience numerous medieval sights during your next stop in Antwerp. However, Antwerp is also a vibrant modern city with an extremely lively fashion and art scene. The conclusion of your river cruise through Holland and Belgium is Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands.
On this cruise through Holland you will get to know many of the most beautiful provinces of the Netherlands. The first stop on your river cruise is Cuijk on the Meuse River, where you can experience history at the Foundation Museum Ceuclum, the Sint Agatha Monastery and the St. Martinuskerk. Via Roermond, you will sail up the Meuse River to Maastricht. The capital of the province of Limburg delights with a great mix of historical sights, cultural highlights, cozy restaurants and hip cafes. From Maastricht you drive to Antwerp, the heart of Flanders. Here you can not only shop for fashion, art and diamonds, but also enjoy magnificent historic and modern architecture. In Dordrecht in South Holland, you will immerse yourself in the exciting past of a former trading city. The historic city center, the harbor and the museums of Dordrecht bear witness to the great history of the city. Via Rotterdam, where you will be amazed by the largest port in Europe, you will travel on to historic Gouda, whose scales, town hall and St. John's Church are among the most beautiful buildings in the Netherlands. In Gouda, of course, you can't miss learning all about the world-famous cheese at the Gouda Cheese Experience. The conclusion of your cruise through the provinces of the Netherlands is at the same time one of the highlights: Amsterdam. Enjoy the unique flair of the Amsterdam canals at the end of your cruise through Holland with a glass of Heineken or a coffee in one of the cozy cafes on the banks of the canals.
A river cruise through Holland and Belgium is hard to beat for variety. In almost every city of the two Benelux countries there are beautiful historical sights to visit. However, many of the metropolises of the Netherlands, such as Rotterdam and Antwerp, are also known for their modern architecture. Art lovers will discover numerous old and new masterpieces in the museums of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Ghent and Maastricht. Sporty people can enjoy sailing or kayaking on the many waters of Holland and Belgium. That both countries are a paradise for cyclists is widely known anyway. And whether with a Belgian beer in Antwerp, a bag of fries in Brussels or a coffee in Amsterdam - the bars, cafes and restaurants in Belgium and the Netherlands are way out in front in Europe when it comes to coziness.
The starting point of a river cruise to the Netherlands is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, DĂĽsseldorf. Due to its excellent connection to the highway network, its large airport and its important train station, DĂĽsseldorf is easily accessible from anywhere in Germany. The VIVA Cruises team will be happy to assist all guests in planning their journey to DĂĽsseldorf.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond
Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest
Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.
Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.
While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.
What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?
The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.
Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?
The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.
Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.
Is a Danube river cruise worth it?
Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.
On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.
What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?
One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).
Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.
Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.
And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.
Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?
Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.
How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?
Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over ÂŁ2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.
Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.

Inside the Olympic effort to clean up the River Seine — and why it may be spoiled by a rainy day
PARIS — Meandering down the Seine R iver , the light breeze, gentle current and the sun’s glistening rays weren’t the only things the three kayakers were hoping to catch on a warm spring day — they were also on the hunt for garbage.Â
By attaching nylon stockings to the side of their kayaks, they scooped up even the smallest fragments of plastic, as well as the everyday detritus of life in the French capital that washes to the river’s surface every time it rains. The members of the Arc de Seine Kayak club then sent what they had collected to be tested for bacterial levels.Â
“My kayak capsized this morning and I’m OK,” a laughing Paul Maakad told NBC News on Sunday, at the Pont de Sevres in central Paris.Â
But while Maakad, 40, and his fellow boaters said they were not scared of getting into the river, with less than 100 days to go before the 2024 Paris Olympics , fears are growing that events like the marathon swim, the triathlon and the paratriathlon could be postponed or canceled because of high pollution levels, or that the flotilla-based opening ceremony could be affected.
Earlier this month, Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris Organizing Committee, expressed confidence "that it will be possible to use the Seine,” but admitted that the swimming leg of the triathlon could be canceled if pollution levels are too high. "It’s what we want to avoid, of course,” he said .
His comments came days after a French charity warned that bacteria, including “pollution of fecal origin,” was far higher in the river than permitted.Â
As part of an ambitious plan to open up the Seine to public swimmers by 2025 — after being illegal for 100 years because of dangerously high pollution levels — France has spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) on altering and upgrading the city’s antiquated sewage system, which now includes a 13-million-gallon overflow tank called the Austerlitz Basin.Â
But in August, the swim portion of the test marathon event was canceled because the river failed pollution tests.
As the starting gun to the Games approaches, Fluidion, one of the companies the city of Paris contracted to monitor bacteria in the water, exclusively shared its findings with NBC News.Â
A sample of water collected by the Pont Alexander III bridge, in the city’s center, showed E. coli levels two-and-a-half times the level considered safe for swimming.Â
But that in itself isn’t necessarily a concern for the Games themselves, according to Dan Angelescu , the CEO of Fluidion, a tech company that develops water testing products.Â
“In the summer when there is a lot of sunlight, when the water flow, river flow rate is really low, and when there is no rain for several weeks, let’s say two or three weeks without rain, you can actually reach really good water quality conditions,” he said in an interview this month.
But he added that even a small rain event could make E. coli levels shoot up.Â
“You may swim in very polluted water and nothing may happen to you, or you may swim and you may develop itches, or you may develop infections, or you may catch a strain of E. coli that may be pathogenic," he said. "Those aren’t very common, but they exist, and that could get you really sick.”Â
But he cautioned that exposure to other pathogens associated with the presence of E. coli could lead to contracting a norovirus, diarrhea “or you could get certain diseases that can really kill you.”
In a bid to boost public confidence, French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo have both promised to swim in the river to prove its cleanliness.
Pierre-Antoine Molina, a director of public policy in Paris, said he would follow suit. In an interview Monday, he said that water pollution in the river “has been gradually improving.”  Â
He added that the work to upgrade the city's sewage system had led to the modernization of wastewater treatment plants and an improvement in the network that separates wastewater and rainwater.Â
“It’s an ancient city going back to Roman times, so inevitably that’s a big task,” he said, adding that a lot of buildings had been gone up after World War II “and the sewage system did not always cope.”Â
Around 30 miles downstream from Paris, Edouard Combette, 50, showed no fear as he plunged headfirst into the storied waterway, which has inspired artists like the impressionist painter Claude Monet.  Â
“Life is good here,” he said after coming up for air, adding that he didn’t know whether the water was completely safe. Â
“Don’t drink the water. You can swim, but don’t drink,” he said. “I haven’t heard of anyone dying or getting sick.”

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.
Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.
2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.
