A few discoveries include two-legged plant eaters, dino eggs, coprolites (dinosaur poop), dinosaur tracks and the three most complete Stegosaurus’ skeletons ever found.

Many of the real dinosaur fossils uncovered from this area are on display all over the country. See them at the Denver Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

With over 3,000 acres, the Garden Park Fossil Area is vast with lots of things to do.

Camping, hiking, picnicking, and of course the Gold Belt BackCountry Scenic Byway are all free things that can be accessed in this incredible piece of land.

8. Skyline Drive

skyline drive colorado views

Colorado is home to some of the most scenic driving routes in the country, but none are quite like Skyline Drive .

Ranked one of the best drives in the nation, Skyline Drive is a heart-pounding route you won’t soon forget.

The road was constructed in 1906 and follows atop a high razorback ridge with steep cliffs on either side. The road continues for 2.6 miles and is one of Colorado’s most popular bucket list items.

If you’re not comfortable driving, we recommend going on a Jeep tour with an expert driver at the wheel.

Though the road is relatively short, there are several different pull offs available for viewing and taking photos.

Near the top, you’ll have the opportunity to see real dinosaur tracks from Ankylosaurus during the Cretaceous Period.

9. Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience

colorado dinosaur fossils skyline drive

Just on the outskirts of Canon City, literally a moment away from the Royal Gorge Bridge, is one the state’s premier paleontological museums!

But it is much more than just a museum, it’s an experience (see, it’s in the name).

The 10,000 square foot museum displays dinosaurs that lived in the area many millions of years ago. The exhibits are chock full of interactive displays, full-scale dinosaur fossil casts, and real dino fossils.

Plus, the museum offers guided tours, an outdoor dino wild walk, and multistory rope course.

The goal at the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience is to find a balance between science, learning, and good ole fashioned fun. But making sure people leave knowing more than they came with. The Paleo Lab within the museum is run by the Garden Park Paleontological Society. The facility is used to prepare recently found fossils in the nearby Garden Park Fossil Area and other sites around the state.

This Dinosaur Experience is a must for kids and adults who love dinosaurs and want to learn about the history of Colorado’s dino fossils.

10. Echo Canyon River Expeditions

grizzly-creek-near-colorado-river

Echo Canyon River Expeditions have been around for more than 40+ years and is the largest commercial white-water rafting outfitter in the state of CO.

The company has ease of access to the Arkansas River and all the mountainous tributaries that feed it.

The Arkansas River that passes right through Canyon City offers some of the best white-water rafting in the country.

Float down the Royal Gorge with the Bridge more than 1,000 feet above you and the canyon walls towering on each side.

Or take the Bighorn Sheep Canyon for a more mixed adventure of smooth sailing and turbulent rapids. There is an adventure for everyone!

Some trips are more family-focused and take a more relaxed, meandering and scenic float down the river.

But there are also package deals for other adventures in the area like ATV and Raft or Bridge and Raft.

11. Cañon City Brews & Bikes

boulder colorado bike tour

If you enjoy drinking a brew and riding a bike, then you’ll love Cañon City Brews & Bikes .

During the winter, fat biking is something you see in Colorado quite often. Those thicc, fat tires are perfect for all the landscape types and weather conditions.

Not only that, but they are fun to ride and allow you to tackle any terrain, whether snow or rain, dusty trail or muddy road.

Canon City is a fantastic place for doing some mountain biking too. There are dozens of outstanding trails within a short riding distance from the city.

It’s easy to disappear into the backcountry for some fantastic trail riding with fantastic views.

Renting a bike from Canon City Brews and Bikes comes with all the safety equipment you need for a day out.

Plus, you’ll get access to professionals at the store who can provide detailed trail maps and recommendations.

Ask about the area’s hidden gems amongst the canyon land that this city derives its name from. And who can forget the “Brews” part in the name (no, not the bruise you get from wiping on your bike either).

Sip a brew and enjoy some time to chill in the outdoor patio and Beer Garden before hitting the trails again.

Getting there early before you head out on two-wheels you can find some great local beers on tap.

12. Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center

royal-gorge-history

Inside Cañon City’s Municipal Building is the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center .

It was constructed in 1927 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places today. The museum showcases exhibits and galleries displaying the region’s geology and cultural history.

The two-story museum features local dinosaur fossils and a stunning collection of historical photos from the 1870s.

Inside one of the large galleries you’ll find a research and study room, with extensive records of historical papers.

Upstairs you’ll find detailed exhibits featuring fashion throughout the century. Check out vintage clothing, soldier uniforms, letters from World Wars and old fashion trends.

And the best part is that the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center is completely free to visit with no admission fees. Although, donations are always welcomed.

If you have limited time between tours or events in Canon City, take a few minutes to browse through the museum at your own pace.

13. Temple Canyon Park

sangre de cristo mountains

The town of Canon City is aptly named if you can’t guess. The “canyon” part is actually a reference to the plethora of gorges, canyons and parks nearby.

And one of the most popular is Temple Canyon Park. This unique public park is situated along Grape Creek with dramatic views of the Wet Mountains.

The area has a spacious natural, open-air amphitheater, where the park gets the name “Temple”.

Since 1912, Temple Canyon Park has operated as a public park and allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature and majestic scenery.

It lies at the southern end of the Royal Gorge and covers several hundred acres.

Spend the night under the stars at any of the camping spots or enjoy a lunch date at one of the picnic tables.

14. Canon City Trolley

garden of the gods trolley tour

Get a group of 15-18 of your best friends or gather your large family for a private tour in the Canon City Trolley .

Visit the historic downtown area of Canon City from the comfort of this air conditioned/heated trolley.

Explore all that Canon City has to offer with custom stops of your choosing. Then it’s off to the Royal Gorge Bridge for more epic sightseeing and adventures in the Park.

This trolley tour is perfect for weddings, birthdays, special events, and even corporate gigs.

If you want to see all of the quaint and historic things that Canon City has to do, renting a trolley for 3 hours is a great way to do it.

Learn more about the Canon City Trolley and how you can book it for your next event.

From zipline tours to national parks and Royal Gorge rafting, the Canon City area offers great views and memorable experiences.

You’ll even get to see stunning views of the Sangre De Cristo mountains on a bike ride, hike, and most other outdoor excursions.

I hope this guide to the best things to do in Canon City gives you some great ideas for your next day trip itinerary.

The 11 Best Things To Do In Adorable Cañon City, Colorado

canon city tourist attractions

Traveller70 / Shutterstock

  • Destinations
  • United States

While the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush brought the first settlers to Cañon City, the city has grown since its Wild West origins and is now known for its abundance of wild, natural beauty.

This beauty is celebrated with breathtaking views at Royal Gorge , along the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, on scenic drives, and in public parks. The history of the area is still recognized, and as such, the Cañon City Downtown Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. A visit to the area combines the old with the new and immerses visitors in this adorable city’s history and beauty.

Things To Do In Cañon City

I was invited to Cañon City to view the beauty up close with a stay in a charming cabin, a ride on the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, and plenty of stunning — yet hair-raising — adventures at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. Here’s what I found.

The Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado.

kan_khampanya / Shutterstock

1. Royal Gorge Bridge

There are several adventures at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park , both natural wonders and those created for the thrill-seeker. At over 956 feet above the Arkansas River, the bridge is one of the world’s highest suspension bridges. Walk or drive across the slatted bridge to discover fun activities on both sides of the gorge.

2. Royal Gorge Bridge And Park

In addition to the stunning views overlooking the canyon, there are several adventures waiting for those who aren’t faint of heart. I’m not a thrill-seeker, but my companion reveled in riding the gondola across the canyon and zip-lining on the Cloudscraper Zip Line . Neither of us dared try the Skycoaster with its 50-miles-per-hour free fall, but it is a great opportunity for those the adrenaline junkies in your group.

For kids, there’s the Tommy Knocker Playland .

3. Via Ferrata

For those who want to try climbing, there’s a mountaineering experience on the gorge walls called Via Ferrata . You can hike and climb the granite rock walls on a guided climbing tour, with different challenge levels from easy to difficult.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Colorado.

Jill Dutton

4. Royal Gorge Route Railroad

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is a 2-hour scenic ride that travels 24 miles from Cañon City to the Royal Gorge Bridge and back. Enjoy fine dining in one of the dining cars, and then step outside onto one of the open-air cars and see the scenery as you are mere inches from the rock walls. Learn more about the railroad in this article I wrote about Colorado train rides.

It’s a tough decision whether the food or the scenery is more spectacular, but luckily you can enjoy them both. Choose from the dome car on the second level of the train or one of the dining cars for breakfast, lunch, and dinner train rides.

5. Tunnel Drive Trail

There’s a 4-mile round-trip Tunnel Drive Trail that follows an old irrigation canal not far from town. This hike provides excellent views of the Arkansas River and the Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

6. Echo Canyon River Expeditions

The rafting season ended just a week before our arrival, but years ago, on a family trip, we rafted Echo Canyon with Echo Canyon River Expeditions . Since the tour company offers calm day trips or extreme whitewater experiences as well as camping and rafting adventures, there’s something for every skill level.

After a day on the water, 8 Mile Bar and Grill is known for its burgers and fish tacos, but a local told me that the ahi tuna salad is one of the best she’s ever tasted. There’s a 16-tap bar with local and classic brews on tap, making it a favorite hangout for the after-rafting crowd.

7. Garden Park Fossil Area

Enjoy an abundance of public parks and paleontological sites such as the Garden Park Fossil Area , where dinosaur fossils have been discovered.

8. Red Canyon Park

One park you won’t want to miss is Red Canyon Park , with its beautiful red rock formations that have become canyons and monoliths over time. Explore the 640-acre park on or off the designated trails.

9. Skyline Drive

Drive Skyline Drive, a 2.6-mile route that is breathtaking as well as challenging with a steep incline, at times narrow passages, and a rising and falling route. Luckily there are frequent pullouts so you can pull over and take in the view without driving.

10. Museum of Colorado Prisons

We passed the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility, in continuous operation since 1871, several times and wondered about it. It turns out there’s a museum located in a former women’s prison that sits adjacent to the correctional facility. The Museum of Colorado Prisons gives you a glimpse into the Colorado prison system’s history and operations with exhibits that tell the story of its past set in an actual prison. View preserved inmate cells, along with artifacts related to infamous Colorado criminals.

11. Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience

Every day, as we would drive from one activity to another, we saw dinosaur statues. My companion commented that the Cañon City area is big on dinosaurs. If you’re interested as well, one place to get your fill and experience dinosaur history up close is at the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience . It’s a fun and educational way to learn about Colorado’s paleontological history with interactive exhibits, full-scale fossil casts, actual dinosaur fossils, guided tours, and even an outdoor multistory ropes course.

Best Restaurants In Cañon City

Colorado cuisine is a melting pot of cultures and flavors, and Cañon City is no exception. I mentioned some restaurants that are located on-site at attractions, but you’ll also want to head into town and sample some of these local favorites.

Owl Cigar Store

The historic Owl Cigar Store is a Cañon City institution. And rather than a cigar store as the name implies (it was a cigar store until the mid-90s), you’ll find an American diner and pool hall known for its burgers and shakes.

Pizza Madness

A local hangout, Pizza Madness serves award-winning pies in a fun atmosphere. The pizza options are unique: Choose from white, wheat, or gluten-free crust; marinara, pesto, Alfredo, barbecue, or garlic and olive oil sauces; and a variety of vegetable, meat, and cheese toppings. Go with the local taste and order the Colorado with chicken, green chilis, black olives, and bacon.

Le Petite Chablis

Taste authentic French cuisine served in a romantic setting at Le Petite Chablis . Start with either the French Onion Soup or Escargots de Bourgogne with a half dozen snails served on a shell with garlic parsley butter. For the main course, try the Canard a l’Orange, a half duck that is roasted, boneless, and served with an orange Au Marnier sauce, or one of the fresh seafood options such as the Truite Rouge Amandine — fresh red trout sauteed with lemon butter and almonds.

Nirvana Culinary Paradise

We stumbled upon Nirvana Culinary Paradise as we arrived in Cañon City hungry after a hike and a drive that morning. The authentic North Indian food hit the spot. We started with the Momo, dumplings filled with chicken, and then ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Shrimp Tandoori for our main dishes. We both ordered the spice level three (with a choice of one through five), and the heat was pretty intense — but extremely tasty. The dishes came with basmati rice, and we ordered buttered naan to enjoy with the meal. Both of us got to-go boxes and took the leftovers to the cabin with us to enjoy as a snack later.

Royal Gorge Mansion

Step back in time and enjoy high tea inside a historic Colorado mansion built in 1882. Afternoon tea includes classic teas, bubbly, and wine, plus sweet and savory goodies such as gourmet finger sandwiches, homemade scones, and petite fours for an authentic experience.

Best Sips In Cañon City

Sangre distilleries.

If locally distilled spirits and wine are of interest, stop by Sangre Distilleries to sample their Wet Mountain artisan hand-crafted spirits. Though an hour from Cañon City, the drinks are worth a stop.

The Winery At Holy Cross Abbey

Or visit The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey located at the historic Holy Cross Abbey. Sample their award-winning wines with a free tasting in the tasting room, or you’ll also find bottles for sale in many local businesses. We purchased a bottle to enjoy with the sunset view at our cabin.

Best Places To Stay In Cañon City

Royal gorge cabins.

We spent two nights at the Royal Gorge Cabins . Our luxury two-story cabin with two bedrooms included a full kitchen, indoor/outdoor fireplace, and a living room with two sets of sliding doors that led to the patio. We spent most of our time on the patio watching hummingbirds flit on the plants, several birds in the tree next to the cabin, and the gorgeous mountain range that delivered a spectacular sunset. There was a dining table by the outdoor fireplace along with a hammock and two chairs to sit and watch the sunset.

Pro Tip: For those who prefer glamping, there are also glamping tents for a more rustic experience. While the location feels remote, it’s a short and scenic 10 minutes into the city.

Creekside Log Cabin

This VRBO cabin with a mountain view is situated on a family farm just a couple miles from Cañon City. The 800-square-foot cabin has one bedroom but will sleep four with a pull-out couch in the living room. The cabin and decor are cozy and comfortable and the rental is dog- and family-friendly.

Pro Tip: The steps leading up to the bedroom are extremely steep, so this would not be an ideal choice for anyone with hip or knee problems.

44 Things To Do In Cañon City

By: Author Robyn Robledo

Posted on Last updated: March 2, 2024

canon city tourist attractions

We spent about a month this past spring exploring the town of Canon City, which is located an hour south of Colorado Springs. What we loved most about our travels here is that there are so many great outdoor adventures within an hours drive and many adventurous things to do right in town. Here are some of our favorite sports, adrenaline filled activities, and touristy things to do in Canon City.

Table of Contents

Best Time To Visit Canon City

canon city tourist attractions

If you want to get the most out of the area, fall is the best time to visit Canon City. However, there are plenty of things to do year-round. The number one thing that brings our family to Canon City is the rock climbing in Shelf Road. We’ve been there in the summer and while it is quite hot, you can always chase the shade. We’ve also been there in winter and have hiked out to the walls through the snow yet been able to climb in tee shirts. Springtime is when we were there last and while we still had a great time, the wind was intense, and many times we couldn’t go out to climb, bike, or do the adventures at Royal Gorge because of it.

Favorite adventurous things to do in canon city, 1 | rock climb at shelf road.

canon city tourist attractions

As I mentioned, this is what always brings us to Canon City. Shelf Road is a world-class destination with over 1000 routes on amazing limestone. Shelf Road is about 30 minutes north of town. There are two main climbing areas that require driving down dirt roads to get to.

Sand Gulch is pretty short and most 2wd vehicles can make it unless there has been a lot of rain and the road is rutted out. I’ve taken my 30′ Class C motorhome here and it was fine.

The Bank is a much steeper and windier dirt road. I’ve seen some people take their very short trailers up to the campground here. Again 2wd is usually fine unless there’s been a lot of rain.

2 | Camping Under The Stars

canon city tourist attractions

There are the 2 great campgrounds at Shelf Road (mentioned above) but if you are looking for a nice RV park near Canon City, your best bet is to go east a little to Royal Gorge and stay at Mountain View RV Resort . We’ve stayed there before and loved that it lives up to its name with great views of the mountains. It is close to all the adventures in Royal Gorge and is big rig-friendly. They have free hot showers and full hookups, and the sites are very well maintained.

Other than these, there are a few RV parks on the outskirts of town that are mostly for monthly stays. There is also Pueblo Reservoir which has a State Park Campground but that is almost an hour away from Canon City.

3 | Royal Gorge Park Suspension Bridge

canon city tourist attractions

This is Colorado’s Iconic suspension bridge and a very popular tourist attraction. We finally had the opportunity to check it out when we were there in April and did the Zipline, Ariel Tram, and the Sky Coaster . They were incredibly fun and if you love roller coasters, I highly recommend giving the Sky Coaster a GO!

canon city tourist attractions

There is also a Via Ferrata which we skipped since we already climb a lot, but it looked really fun too. The Zipline is pretty tame however, if adrenaline is not your thing then just walking across the bridge and peering over the edge or riding the gondola 2,400 feet above the canyon floor should be enough fun for you.

There’s also a nice playground and carousel for younger kids and the park is open 365 days a year however some days they do have to close the rides for high winds.

4 | Drive Skyline Drive

canon city tourist attractions

We used to only travel in our class C and would miss out on things like this but now we have our truck and it was so much fun to get to drive this narrow, one-lane road with epic 360-degree views of Canon City and surrounding area.

Just enter Skyline Drive in your GPS and you’ll easily find the starting point. If heights scare you, you’ll want to skip this drive or at least not be in the passenger seat.

5 | Whitewater Rafting

A great way to enjoy the summer in Canon City is to sign up for a whitewater rafting adventure. There are numerous guides located near Royal Gorge that will take you on an exhilarating journey down the Arkansas River.

6 | Arkansas Riverwalk

canon city tourist attractions

In the center of town is a flat, wide 7.5 mile one-way trail that is great for walking, running, and mountain biking. You can access the Arkansas Riverwalk trail at Centennial Park, Sell’s Lake, MacKenzie Avenue Trailhead, and Tunnel Drive.

canon city tourist attractions

Our family loves to go down to the riverwalk and work at the numerous fitness stations along the path. This trail is dog-friendly too.

7 | Tunnel Drive

canon city tourist attractions

To get here, park at the Tunnel Drive Trailhead and it’s a short hike uphill to get to the 3 tunnels, which were built for the city’s water delivery system in the late 1800s. The entire trail is just under 2 miles one way and has beautiful views of the river below.

You may even catch the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad as the Royal Gorge Route train passes along this stretch of the river or see some bighorn sheep on the mountainsides. You may want to combine this adventure with Skyline Drive as they are minutes from each other.

8 | Mountain Biking

canon city tourist attractions

Canon City area is famous for its mountain biking trails and I was so bummed that we didn’t have our mountain bikes with us when we were there in April so we hiked the South Canon Trails from the Eagle Wing Trailhead.

Some of the trail networks in the area include Hogsback Open Space, South Cañon Trails, Oil Well Flats, and Royal Gorge Park. You can rent mountain bikes at Bikes + Brew in town.

11 | Float or Surf

When the river warms up in the summer you can float the Arkansas River in innertubes or head west to Pueblo’s White Water Park.

canon city tourist attractions

Pueblo is only a 45-minute drive and has one of the coolest adventures…river surfing! River surfing is a mix of traditional ocean surfing and wake surfing that you would do behind a boat. We’ve tried it before in Germany and again in Bend, Oregon, and let me just say that it was much more difficult than I expected but worth learning if you love challenge and adventure.

12 | Fly Fishing

I can’t say I have first-hand experience with this however I know a lot of people who absolutely love it and Canon City is a great place for fly fishing.

Okay, this was a little creepy to me but I’m sure history buffs will love learning more about the Colorado prison system and past inmates. The museum is open in May through September Monday through Sunday 10 am- 6 pm and Wednesday through Sunday 10 am- 5 pm the rest of the year.

Family-Friendly Things To Do In Canon City

Centennial Park is a nice way to spend a few hours in Canon City. Young kids will love the playground, splash pad, and feeding the ducks.

22 | Visit Fossil Discovery

Canon City and neighboring Royal Gorge have plenty of fossil fun for the dinosaur lover of the family. Check out the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience , Garden Park Fossil Area , or Indian Springs Trace Fossil Natural Area .

23 | Farmer’s Market

Get local and organic produce and meats, baked goods, and other artisan foods at the Canon City Farmers Market every Tuesday 8am-1pm from June through October. Located at 211 South 3rd St.

24 | Gold Mine Rock Shop

Purchase crystals, rocks, gems, fossils, minerals, gifts, souvenirs, jewelry, and gold panning equipment at the Gold Mine Rock Shop in Royal Gorge.

Day Trips From Canon City

25 | cheyenne mountain state park.

Cheyenne Mountain offers 28 miles of hiking and biking trails as well as an archery range. It has a beautiful campground that is open year-round.

26 | Drive The Westcliffe Loop

Many people we talked to recommended the scenic drive out to the western town of Westcliffe, which is surrounded by majestic mountains. Besides the great views, many visit here for hiking, fishing, camping, horseback riding, bird watching, and technical climbing.

From Canon City, head west out of town and then go right (south) on Hwy 67 through Florence and on to Wetmore. Go right (east) on Hwy 96. About an hour after leaving Canon City you’ll arrive in Westcliffe. After exploring the area, make it a loop by driving north out of Westcliffe on Hwy 69 and then right on Hwy 50 to get back to Canon City.

27 | Drive to Cripple Creek & Victor

canon city tourist attractions

An even more popular drive from Canon is the Gold Belt Byway . This takes you north to Cripple Creek & Victor, which is the site of the world’s largest gold rush. While there, check out the casinos, shops, and restaurants, or maybe go for a train ride.

Since eating out and shopping aren’t our thing, I recommend checking out the Pancake Rocks Trail instead.

The easiest way to drive to Cripple Creek is by taking Hwy 50 west past Royal Gorge then turning right (north) on Hwy 9, right on High Park Road, right on County Road 11, and then right on Teller County Road 1. Before turning onto Teller County Road 1, you may want to go north to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.

For more adventure, you can drive the bumpy dirt road past Shelf Road , which is also a popular mountain biking route. The Shelf Road route has some sections that are one lane and require 4WD.

Another adventurous route is to take Phantom Canyon Road , which also requires 4WD as well as no vehicles over 25 feet long. There are 2 tunnels and a steel bridge along the way.

28 | Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

Explore the geology and fossils of one of the richest fossil deposits in the world.

29 | Hike The Famous Barr Trail

This one is on my bucket list! The Barr Trail starts in Manitou Springs and continues 13.5 miles to the summit of Pike’s Peak. It takes anywhere from 8-14 hours one way and is extremely challenging. But, what I think is the best part is that once you get to the top, you can shuttle back down and skip the downhill.

30 | Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods, Colorado Road Trip Itinerary

Rock climbing is what first brought us to the Garden of the Gods, however, all nature lovers will enjoy visiting the unique rock formations and trails that wind through this beautiful landscape. The park offers numerous tours, a visitor center with junior ranger programs, and much more.

31 | Summit Pikes Peak via the Cog Railroad

canon city tourist attractions

We did this years ago and the views were amazing from the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115. Now, it would probably be too “chill” of an adventure for our family. This is the highest and longest cog railroad in the world and it takes you past 7 diverse biomes.

32 | Historic Manitou Springs

At the base of Pikes Peak is the historic Manitou Springs. here you’ll find hiking trails, natural mineral springs, and a quaint downtown filled with boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

33 | Conquer the Manitou Inline

kids hiking manitou incline

We did this back in 2015 and I almost killed Victor hiking up the 2,744 steep steps. It is challenging for sure! It’s only one mile in length but climbs 2,000 ft of elevation gain and is already at elevations so you’ll want to have acclimated to the altitude beforehand. Remember to wear layers, take it slow, and bring plenty of water. We always add this to our water when we do strenuous hikes! Unfortunately, you do have to now make a reservation ahead of time in order to hike this.

34 | Manitou Cliff Dwellings

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Manitou Cliff Dwellings Museum (@manitoucliffdwellings)

Step back in time and actually touch history. Yes, it’s true, they actually encourage you to touch the structures as you walk through the 40 rooms and learn what it was like for the indigenous tribes living there 700 years ago. Learn more .

35 | Cave of the Winds

Brave the dark in this one-mile-long cavern. This is a great educational outing, especially for homeschooled families. You’ll get to tour the cave and learn all about bats and geology when visiting the Cave of the Winds .

36 | Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Located next to Manitou Springs, this natural area is great for hiking , mountain biking, and wildlife viewing.

37 | Seven Falls

canon city tourist attractions

Considered one of the most captivating natural wonders of Colorado and is also called “The Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado.” Seven Falls sits in a 1,250-foot-wall box canyon. Take in the view up close by climbing 224 steps or chase more adrenaline with the zip lines, ropes courses, or canyoneering.

38 | Cheyenne Zoo

canon city tourist attractions

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center offers year-round guided tours of the OPTC facilities. Tours begin with a video presentation and are followed by a walking tour of the Complex. The experience lasts approximately 1 hour. Monday-Saturday: Tours are conducted hourly, on the hour. The first tour begins at 9 am, and the last tour departs at 4 pm.

40 | Air Force Academy

Another popular tourist attraction in Colorado Springs, the Air Force Academy is open to visitors daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Kids will love participating in the scavenger hunt and viewing the diversity of wildlife that lives on the campus.

41 | Flying W Ranch

I think this mountain cattle ranch is a cool place to visit. It was started back in 1947 and is a living symbol of Western Heritage, embodying the romantic spirit of the Old West. For dinner, they serve a spread of smoked meats followed by a western stage show performed by the world-renowned Flying W Wranglers, the second longest-running western performance band in the world. There are also demonstrations including Navajo rug weaving, silversmithing, and horseshoeing. You can buy tickets here .

42 | Paint Mines Interpretive Park

Similar to what you see at Artist’s Palette in Death Valley, these geological formations are colored in bright hues of pinks, blues, and yellows. The Paint Mines are located an hour and a half northeast of Canon City and are free to enter.

43 | Lake George 11 Mile Canyon

For more open space and outdoor adventure, you can head northwest from Canon City for an hour and explore the 11 Mile Canyon and Lake George area. This area is great for hiking, climbing, and off-roading.

43 | Great Sand Dunes NP

This is a long day trip from Canon City (3 hours each way) but totally doable. Great Sand Dunes National Park is open year-round however, spring and fall are the best times to visit. Popular things to do in North America’s tallest sand dunes include hiking, sand boarding, sledding, and playing in the creek. You may want to stay and camp a night to experience a moonless night to experience this International Dark Sky Park’s starry skies.

44 | Sign Up For A Race

Canon City is home to many running and biking races including the Royal 50 Mountain Bike Races , Run Blossom , Point Alta Vista Trail Races , and Rim to Rim .

Cañon City, Colorado

Welcome to Cañon City, home of the Royal Gorge Bridge — the highest suspension bridge in America.

In addition to the activities available at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park , the area offers a variety of outdoor adventures for the entire family year-round.

Things to Do in Cañon City

Cañon City is an outdoor lovers' paradise, with hunting, fishing — including the best fly fishing in the nation — boating, bicycling, golfing , hiking, swimming, camping , horseback riding , ATV trips, and mountain climbing all available to experience in the area. The Arkansas River, which carves through the Gorge, is considered one of the top spots in the country for whitewater rafting .

One of Cañon City's signature attractions is Royal Gorge Bridge & Park , which offers a plethora of exciting activities for all ages. Cross the bridge's 1,257 wooden planks — suspended 956 feet over the Arkansas River — for sweeping views of the canyon beneath your feet, or sit back, relax and soak in the sights as you cross the canyon in a gondola. Other Park experiences including the thrilling Royal Rush Skycoaster, Cloudscraper Zip Line, and a Via Ferrata course.

Immerse yourself in the Royal Gorge with a ride along the rim with Colorado Jeep Tours , who also offers rides along the Gold Belt Tour through mining districts of the 1800s — Cripple Creek and Victor . Book seats aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad for a scenic, round trip train ride through the Gorge, complete with dining service and special events throughout the year.

Other popular Cañon City experiences include shopping in Historic Downtown, tasting award-winning wine at The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey , and touring the Gold Belt Byway , which includes two exciting and very scenic routes Cripple Creek — our local gaming town located some 9,000+ feet in the mountains. There's plenty of fun, excitement, beauty and spirit in the Cañon City area.

With lots of room to roam, you can leave all your 'big-city' hassles and worries behind as you bask in the warmth of the sunshine abundant to the region : Cañon City boasts 325 days of sunshine per year.

History of Cañon City

Cañon City was founded in 1860 for the purpose of excavating possible mineral deposits in the area. Cañon City is also the home of the Royal Gorge, a 10-mile long steep canyon carved in granite by the rushing Arkansas River.

Experience the history of Cañon City by visiting this historic town. Main Street in Downtown Cañon City, listed on the National Register of Historic Places is a great place to start. Don't forget to save with area discounts and deals on lodging, attractions, dining and more!

A History Built by Trains

No gold or minerals were found in the history of Cañon City but the discovery of silver and lead in Leadville, Colorado, in 1877 prompted a race to build rail access to the area. In the 1890s, the Royal Gorge region was used as a passenger route for transcontinental rail travel. As many as four trains per day went through the gorge, though in time, the establishment of alternate routes through the mountains made the Royal Gorge fall from favor for transcontinental use, and passenger train service on the main line was discontinued in 1967.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad , a leisure train, now follows the route through the gorge. In 1929, Cañon City authorized the building of the Royal Gorge Bridge, which stands at 1,053 feet above the river and is one of the highest suspension bridges over water in the world. The bridge forms the heart of Royal Gorge Bridge & Park , a theme park owned and run by the city.

Ancient Dinosaur Bones

Another significant element in the history of Cañon City is the discovery of dinosaur bones in the area in the early 1870s. Today, you can see and learn more about Cañon City's prehistoric past at the 10,000-square-foot campus of the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience .

Here, visitors of all ages can view full-scale dinosaur fossil casts, interact with hands-on exhibits and displays, and walk among giants of bygone eras in their Dinosaur Wild Walk, featuring 16 life-size animatronic dinosaurs. For more modern thrills, dinosaur enthusiasts can scale a three-story ropes course that brings you face-to-face with a T-Rex.

14 Best Things to Do in Cañon City (CO)

City is a town of about 17,000 residents that’s located near the geographic center of Colorado.

It’s the seat of Fremont County and is a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes.

Cañon City’s proximity to the Arkansas River and a variety of state and national parks gives visitors an abundance of outdoor recreation options to choose from, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from one of the country’s most notorious prisons in nearby Florence.

The weather is typically harsh in the winter, but there are a variety of indoor activity options, including museums, galleries, and historic sites.

Below are 14 things to do in and around Cañon City.

1. Royal Gorge

Royal Gorge, Colorado

Located along County Road 3A just outside of town, Royal Gorge is an impressive natural attraction that was created by constant bombardment by wind and water over the ages.

The Royal Gorge Park is also home to the tallest suspension bridge in the country, which towers nearly 1,000 feet over the Arkansas River below.

The gorge, bridge, and park are some of the area’s most photographed icons and are places that many visitors wind up spending significant amounts of their time.

Other gorge amenities include a playground, theater, and a unique water-powered clock that’s the only one of its kind in the state.

2. Museum of Colorado Prisons

Museum of Colorado Prisons

For lovers of macabre history and eerie tales of terror, there’s no better place to spend a few hours than the Museum of Colorado Prisons.

The museum is housed in a historic women’s prison located next to the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility that traces its roots back nearly 150 years.

Permanent exhibits include contraband weapons made by inmates, uniforms, cells, and first-hand accounts of administrators, guards, and prisoners who spent time on the inside over the years.

Many guests find the biographies of the prison system’s most dangerous and colorful characters to be among the highlights of their visit to the museum.

3. Big Burger World

Big Burger World, Canon City

With so many outdoor activities and loads of fresh mountain air, those who spend time in The Rocky Mountain State tend to have big appetites.

According to burger aficionados, Big Burger World has not only the biggest burgers in town, but the most flavorful ones as well.

Big Burger World is regularly described as an old-time restaurant that reminds many visitors of the comfortable and inviting burger joints they visited as kids.

Located on South 9th Street, they have been serving up their hearty fare since 1968, and they also offer barbecue on Fridays and Saturdays, delicious shakes, and lots of tasty sides.

4. Garden Park Fossil Area

Garden Park Fossil Area

Many of the fossils found in the Garden Park Fossil Area in Cañon City are on display in some of the country’s most prestigious museums, like the Smithsonian Institute in the nation’s capital.

For more than a century, the area has been excavated, and for lovers of natural history, it’s a must-visit attraction while in the area.

There are nearly 20 miles of multiuse trails that wind their way through the scenic landscape; they’re open to hikers, cyclists, and trail runners.

For those who prefer exploring by four-wheel drive or all-terrain vehicle, there are rough roads in the Dinosaur Flats portion of the park.

5. Cañon City Brews & Bikes

Cañon City Brews & Bikes

Colorado residents love their craft beers and spending time in the great outdoors. For those interested in enjoying both pursuits at the same time, Cañon City Brews & Bikes deserves a top spot on their itineraries.

Though it’s only been around since 2018, it has attracted a loyal following – and in addition to being a tap house, it’s a bike rental shop.

Most guests prefer to ride first and drink second. They’ve got nearly 20 beers on tap at any one time, offer indoor and outdoor seating and live entertainment on Friday nights, and a wide range of food options.

Those unfamiliar with the area will get insider tips from the staff on where to ride.

6. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Some historic railroads still operate across the state, and many of them were founded more than a century ago when Colorado was just opening up to exploration and settlement.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is a unique and romantic way to take in the fantastic countryside just outside of town. The company that now operates the railroad offers two-hour tours in which trains travel under the aforementioned Royal Gorge Bridge, making for unparalleled views of both naturally occurring and humanmade wonders.

Tours include a variety of food options, like burgers, burritos, and appetizers, and they carry wine and beer as well.

7. Echo Canyon River Expeditions

Echo Canyon River Expeditions

Colorado is home to some of the country’s best rafting rivers. Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned expert or a newbie, you’ll likely find an appropriate option at Echo Canyon River Expeditions.

The company is located on US Route 50 and has been offering guided river tours since the late-‘70s. Each excursion is staffed by employees with plenty of experience.

Full and half-day trips are available, all of which include an ever-popular riverside meal.

During the peak summer season, expeditions often reach maximum capacity, so if you know exactly when you’ll be visiting, it’s wise to reserve your spaces in advance.

8. Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive, Canon City

Like most of the mountainous western states, Colorado is home to some of the most scenic driving routes in the country, and Skyline Drive is consistently ranked as one of the best.

Though it’s a relatively short route, Skyline Drive follows the contour of a towering ridge along US Route 50. There are a number of pullouts with viewing areas along the way for those who’d like to stop and enjoy the splendor.

Near the top, visitors up for further exploration will have the opportunity to visit preserved dinosaur tracks from the Cretaceous Period.

The road is narrow, and passing slow-moving vehicles can be dangerous, so drive with caution.

9. The Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center

Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center

Located on Royal Gorge Boulevard in Cañon City, The Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center has been around since the ‘20s and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum’s exhibits touch on geology, dinosaurs, and local history. For those looking to make the most of their limited travel time, it’s a perfect place to spend a few hours getting up to speed with the area’s past and all it has to offer.

Some of the fossils on display date back hundreds of millions of years, and there’s an archive center, renovated schoolhouse from the 1860s, and a reading room as well.

10. Red Canyon Park

Red Canyon Park

Though it’s not big by Colorado park standards, Red Canyon Park is spread over nearly 600 acres that are adjacent to the Rocky Mountains.

The park’s vibrant red rock has been carved into canyons, gorges, and spires over millennia, and most of the park is accessible by a network of trails that range from easy to moderately difficult.

Due to the park’s size, it’s wise to do a bit of research online before your visit, or consider stopping by the visitor’s center to get an overview of the layout and things you’ll want to see before heading out on your own.

11. Royal Gorge Zip Line Tours

Royal Gorge Zip Line Tours

Perhaps with the exception of skydiving, there’s really no more exhilarating way to get a bird’s eye view of the landscape than by zip lining.

Royal Gorge Zip Line Tours is located on US Route 50 just outside of town and boasts nearly two dozen individual zip lines that are set at varying heights. It’s common for daring participants to reach more than 50 miles per hour on the highest and most sloped lines.

Amazing views of the gorge, Arkansas River, and majestic rock formations are things to behold, as are the often snow-covered peaks of the Sangre de Christo Mountains in the distance.

12. Red Canyon Cycles – The Bean Pedaler

Red Canyon Cycles – The Bean Pedaler

Red Canyon Cycles and The Bean Pedaler are two area businesses that have come together to cater to the active crowd who relish time outdoors and great coffee.

Though neither business has been around very long, they just work well together. In addition to hot and cold coffee creations, they offer bicycle rentals as well as gear, and repair services for those traveling with their own bikes.

The coffee shop is contemporary and comfortable and serves reasonably priced breakfast favorites like panini and fresh baked goods. It’s a popular first-stop for early risers heading off to explore the Royal Gorge.

13. Fremont Center for the Arts

Fremont Center for the Arts

The Fremont Center for the Arts was founded in the mid-‘40s, which makes it one of the oldest art centers of its kind in the west.

Located on Macon Avenue in the heart of Cañon City’s historic district, in addition to being an art venue, it offers a variety of community workshops throughout the year, many of which are for artists of varying ages and skill levels.

The center’s exhibits feature historic and contemporary works from local, regional, and national artists done in a variety of mediums, and many of them have western themes that are very popular these days.

14. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve isn’t the closest attraction to Cañon City, but for those who choose to visit, it usually ends up being one of the most memorable.

The national park and preserve are home to the tallest dunes on the continent, and its varied environments include pine forests, lakes, wetlands, and even tundra.

A few mountain peaks adjacent to the preserve are higher than 13,000 feet, making for an impressive and photogenic contrast with the dunes below.

For many, the dunes are mystical and otherworldly places that are best experienced in the low light morning and evening hours.
