In 2007 producer Sharon Browne filmed the first ever Celtic Thunder show at the Helix in Dublin, Ireland. The concept was to feature a group of men from Ireland and Scotland, who range in age from 21 to 42, and feature songs that celebrate a common Celtic heritage.

The resulting show included an eclectic mix of songs ranging from the traditional to international hits and some original pieces along the way. The current cast of Celtic Thunder is made up of diverse performers, Emmet Cahill, Neil Byrne, Damian McGinty and Ronan Scolard.

The members of Celtic Thunder are each a powerhouse in both their solo and ensemble songs. Ably backed by the dynamic Celtic Thunder Band, their shows are known for the use of dramatic effects of lighting and choreography as well as a stage set resembling an ancient stone pathway suggestive of those referenced in Celtic lore.

The first Celtic Thunder CD/DVD was released in March 2008 and was simply called Celtic Thunder – The Show. A full US and Canada tour followed in the fall of that year, along with a second CD from the Show called “Act II”. In 2009 Celtic Thunder released their second DVD third CD “Take Me Home.” This was followed by “It’s Entertainment” in 2010, which paid homage to US pop culture. 3 subsequent releases “Heritage”, “Voyage” and “New Voyage” firmly returned the show to its Celtic roots, stocked full of Irish and Scottish traditional and contemporary songs. The first Celtic Thunder Christmas CD and DVD were also released in October 2010 .

Two more releases followed in 2011 for Celtic Thunder, Heritage in Feb ’11 and Storm, their first theatrical production in August 2011. Celtic Thunder also took the Heritage show on tour in the US that year. February 2013 saw the show return to the Helix in Dublin to film their 9 th DVD and 10 th CD entitled “Mythology” which presented a perfect blend of entertainment, ideology, and Gaelic spirituality, providing a modern twist on the old Celtic storytelling tradition.

In Fall 2014 Celtic Thunder released their 11 th CD “Holiday Symphony” an eclecic selection of Christmas standards from around the world and delivered with Celtic Thunder’s signature big production sound and backed by a 90-piece orchestra. 2015 saw the Very Best Of Celtic Thunder release on CD and DVD, offering a compilation of their best loved songs and fan favorites and followed up with a North America “Very Best of Tour” which took place from February to April 2015 covering 45 cities over a 9-week spell.

In 2014 Celtic Thunder transitioned to their new home at Sony Records’ Legacy label and their first release on Legacy was Holiday Symphony, followed by The Very Best of Celtic Thunder. The entire back catalog moved to Sony and was re-released in October 2015.

In March 2015 Celtic Thunder filmed their “Legacy” show at the Casino Rama in Canada. Released in 2 Volumes on CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, and limited-edition Vinyl. On the back of the Legacy release Celtic Thunder brought the show on a 16-city tour of Australia in May 2016. A 75-city North American tour followed later that same year.

Just before embarking on their 2017 Symphony Tour in the U.S. in late 2017, Celtic Thunder returned to the Helix in Dublin to film their 10 th Anniversary Show Celtic Thunder X, featuring a wide mix of both traditional and contemporary Irish Songs, Classic Hits, Love Songs, Nostalgic Songs and Fun Retro Songs from the soundtracks of viewers lives. Celtic Thunder X was released on CD/DVD in March 2018 and toured the U.S. and Canada later that year playing to sold out audiences in 75 cities over a 4-month period.

In 2019 Celtic Thunder returned to studio in Ireland to prepare for their 2020 release Celtic Thunder Ireland and prep for the tour of the same name. Unfortunately, the global pandemic put paid to any touring plans and CT postponed their scheduled shows to 2022.

In 2020 Celtic Thunder pivoted to online events, building and creating a total of 12 Stageit Concert Series, (a series comprises of a block 5 shows over the course of a week) and streamed to fans every other month throughout 2020 and 2021. Each series had a theme; days 1-4 were dedicated to a Celtic Thunder principal artist, with all 4 coming together on the final show of the series. The themes varied from Ancestry, Customs and Traditions, Places to see in Ireland, the artists talking about their childhood, their careers with Celtic Thunder and of course live concerts. In total Celtic Thunder sold over 60,000 tickets to their online shows on the Stageit platform.

Two years later than originally planned, Celtic Thunder finally brought their Ireland tour on the road to live audiences across the United States and Canada. The Celtic Thunder Ireland tour kicked off in Orlando, FL on February 22 nd, 2022.

By the end of 2022 Celtic Thunder had toured the US and Canada, coast to coast, fourteen times, Australia four times performing over 1000 shows to date to millions of fans. Celtic Thunder has also undertaken 4 Entertainment Cruises in the Caribbean, each one transporting over 4,000 fans on a 4-day musical extravaganza.

Now in Fall of 2023, Celtic Thunder is gearing up for its 15 th tour of the USA and Canada. Their new show is called Odyssey and is a fascinating exploration of Irish music and culture, a sweeping voyage through the heartlands of traditional Irish music, the rhythmic pulse of contemporary Irish music, and the innovative original arrangements that are emblematic of the ensemble’s unique sound. The shared musical chemistry of Celtic Thunder’s lead vocalists gives the show its compelling power, while each singer adds their distinctive voice and charm to this musical journey, creating a harmonious blend that appeals to a broad spectrum of tastes. Odyssey will play in 32 cities across North America opening in Minneapolis on October 5 th 2023.

Celtic Thunder has been hailed as BILLBOARD’s Top World Music Artist 5 times, along with Top World Music Imprint and Top World Album (2008, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2016). The Celtic Thunder official YouTube channel, “Thunder Tube” has received over 350 million views since its inception in 2008 and has 415,000 active subscribers. Celtic Thunder also has over 1.1 million followers on its official Facebook page.

The foundation of the group is based upon an exploration of Irish music, history, and culture that is firmly grounded in the ensembles history while ambitiously forging new paths into the future.

The group will be debuting their newest work Odyssey as they embark upon a new 30-city tour of America & Canada, performing at Midland Center for the Arts on Tuesday, October 17 th at 7:30 PM. With Odyssey, Celtic Thunder invites audiences on a sweeping voyage through the heartlands of traditional Irish music, the rhythmic pulse of contemporary Irish music, and the innovative original arrangements that are emblematic of the ensemble’s unique sound.   

The core impetus behind the group Is the shared musical chemistry of Celtic Thunder’s lead vocalists  Ryan Kelly ,  Damian McGinty ,  Neil Byrne ,  and  Emmet Cahill , which gives the show its compelling power. The origins of the group go back to 2007, when producer Sharon Browne embarked on an innovative project by filming the inaugural Celtic Thunder show at the Helix in Dublin, Ireland. The concept behind this groundbreaking endeavor was to assemble a group of talented men from Ireland and Scotland, spanning ages from 21 to 42, and curate a performance that celebrated their shared Celtic heritage. 

The resulting show presented a captivating blend of musical genres, ranging from traditional Celtic tunes to international chart-toppers, interwoven with original compositions. Indeed, each member of Celtic Thunder is a formidable talent, both in solo and ensemble performances. 

Since 2008, Celtic Thunder has released a remarkable total of 17 shows on CD and DVD. By the end of 2023, they will have completed 15 coast-to-coast tours of the United States and Canada, as well as four tours of Australia, performing over 1000 shows and captivating millions of fans. Additionally, the impact of Celtic Thunder’s music has earned them impressive recognition, including being named Billboard’s   Top World Music Artist five times, while their YouTube channel Thunder Tube has garnered over 300 million views since its inception in 2008, with over a million followers on their official Facebook page.  

One of the principal vocalists, singer Damian McGinty is a multi-genre singer/songwriter from Derry, Northern Ireland, who now calls Nashville his home. He currently splits his time as an independent solo artist and a principal performer for Celtic Thunder, sprinkled in with occasional acting jobs and other pursuits. He is a featured performer in eight Celtic Thunder PBS specials , a highlighted performer in two additional PBS specials, and appears on eight Celtic Thunder DVDs and a dozen Celtic Thunder CDs. Meanwhile, in his solo work, Damian's Irish roots blend with pop, folk, adult alternative contemporary, and country influences and a lyrical storytelling style to create a sound that is both familiar and unique.   

“Celtic music has always been a part of my life,” he explains. “Coming from Ireland, this is something we’re very proud of because it represents our heritage very well by telling stories that have been handed down for generations that we keep alive through this music. It’s become very relatable to people. I can’t tell you how many people tell us they have a bit of the Irish in them, so it seems most people have some sort of connection to Ireland in general in many different ways.”

‘I was fortunate to get my first opportunity to perform with Celtic Thunder back in 2007, when I was able to make their first record and PBS special,” notes Damian, and as one of the original members I’ve spent more than half my life at this point performing with them.”

Given that Celtic music has been around for centuries, dating back as far as the 1600s, yet to this day is still one of the world's most popular genres, as a defined niche of music what does Darian feel distinguishes Celtic music from other styles of music out there?   “The magic comes from the layers and depths that it carries,” he reflects. “Many forms of music be it Classical or Country tell stories, but in terms of story telling nothing carries the depth and layers of meaning in the story telling as Celtic music does. And so many of the personal stories Celtic music tells are based upon true stories dating back centuries ago. These deep layers of storytelling separates it from every other genre”

When asked what he feels distinguishes Celtic Thunder from other similar groups performing Celtic music, Damian references the scope and spectacle of their vision. “ Celtic Thunder has always been this incredibly interesting show for people to come to because while we are very much individual performers, we happen to come together as a group that brings a very different kind of sound than you hear at most concerts. I started writing when I was young and my vocal range was that of a tenor, but as I got older that changed and now we have a tenor that will all the other voices, blends together in an ensemble piece that we wrote, which also reflects our own personalities and careers as solo artists. So the difference is really how the separate parts make this truly unique ‘whole ensemble’ come together on an entirely different level than many other groups.”

Dealing with material and many songs that date back centuries, how does the group keep their sound fresh? “That’s a good question and kind of goes in line with the age of the music in the sense that the more experienced we become, the more stories we have to tell and the more we are able to bring to the table, and not the other way around. Music is one of those things that allows you to grow and learn a lot in terms of performance and storytelling. Over 16-years we’ve evolved and gotten a lot better and know what we want to sound like. Sometimes we experiment, but always come around full-circle.”

“This show we’re taking on the road is a very heavy Irish Celtic show, which might sound obvious, but in past years we’ve done a lot more crossover material, and with this show we feature a lot of original music along with Irish classics, and with our experience and blend we came up with the name Odyssey for this show because it also chronicles the journey of the band over the past 16-years.”

Darian says they group usually travels with a tour of 30 to 40 people and features between 10 to 15 vocalists and musicians on the stage. “We always carry a pretty big entourage, which helps with the layers and nuance of the songs by bringing a lot of different sounds into play.”

When asked what the biggest challenge is with performing Celtic music and evolving the legacy of Celtic Thunder, Darian points to the importance of the lyrical legacy each song is built upon. “With Celtic the challenge is to get the story across, because it’s what the song is built around. You don’t want to go out and aimlessly deliver it, but you want to feel the emotion in the lyrics and make eye contact and convey the meaning of the song as if you’re in a living room. Doing that day-in and day-out on tour is the biggest challenge, plus general discipline is very important. As we get older we don’t want to spend as much time on the road, so we condense more shows within a shorter tour timeframe, so we can spend more time with our families as priorities shift as we get older.”

“This is about our journey and the general of Celtic music,” he concludes. “We’ll be coming out with a new album of 13 new songs in November, which we’re excited for people to hear, so this is going to be a great night of Celtic Music and forgetting your troubles for a couple hours. The world is hard enough for people these days, so it’s important for us as entertainers to take people deep into these stories and transport them away.” .

Celtic Thunder - Odyssey is coming to Colorado Springs at Pikes Peak Center on September 30, 2024. Tickets, which range in price from $39.75 to $69.75 plus applicable fees, go on sale on Friday, March 22, at 10am and are available online at AXS.com or in person at the Pikes Peak Center box office.

In 2007, producer Sharon Browne embarked on an innovative project by filming the inaugural Celtic Thunder show at the Helix in Dublin, Ireland. The concept behind this groundbreaking endeavor was to assemble a group of talented men from Ireland and Scotland, spanning ages from 21 to 42, and curate a performance that celebrated their shared Celtic heritage.

The resulting show presented a captivating blend of musical genres, ranging from traditional Celtic tunes to international chart-toppers, interwoven with original compositions. The current lineup of Celtic Thunder comprises a diverse ensemble of performers, including Damian McGinty, Emmet Cahill, Neil Byrne, and Ronan Scolard.

Each member of Celtic Thunder is a formidable talent, both in solo and ensemble performances. Supported by the dynamic Celtic Thunder Band, their live shows are renowned for their dramatic lighting effects, intricate choreography, and a stage set reminiscent of ancient Celtic pathways, evoking the legends of Celtic lore.

The Celtic Thunder ODYSSEY live theatrical production embodies the essence of these Public Television stars. It serves as a captivating exploration of Irish music and culture, spanning traditional Irish rhythms, contemporary beats, and innovative arrangements that define the group's distinctive sound. The show's strength lies in the shared musical chemistry of Celtic Thunder's lead vocalists, each contributing their unique voice and charisma to create a harmonious blend that resonates with a wide range of musical preferences.

Since 2008, Celtic Thunder has released a remarkable total of 17 shows on CD and DVD. By the end of 2023, they will have completed 15 coast-to-coast tours of the United States and Canada, as well as four tours of Australia, performing over 1000 shows and captivating millions of fans. Additionally, Celtic Thunder has ventured into the world of Entertainment Cruises, hosting five Caribbean cruises, each accommodating over 4,000 fans for a four-day musical extravaganza.

The impact of Celtic Thunder's music has earned them prestigious recognition, including being named BILLBOARD's Top World Music Artist five times, along with accolades for Top World Music Imprint and Top World Album in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2016. Their official YouTube channel, "Thunder Tube," has garnered over 300 million views since its inception in 2008, boasting an active subscriber base of 325,000. Furthermore, Celtic Thunder enjoys a dedicated following, with over a million followers on their official Facebook page.
