A woman was killed by a tiger over the weekend after jumping out of a car in a Beijing animal park to try to save her daughter from a tiger attack, local government officials said.

At least one tiger mauled the women on Saturday at Badaling Wildlife World in a section that allows people to drive their own vehicles through a Siberian tiger enclosure, the Yanqing County government said in a written statement .

Surveillance video that circulated widely online showed a woman exit a car, then walk to the other side of the vehicle, where she was attacked a few seconds later by a tiger. As the animal dragged her away, her husband and mother jumped out in an attempt to rescue her.

The woman left the car because of an argument with her husband, reported The Legal Evening News, based in Beijing. The Beijing News, also based in the Chinese capital, quoted a friend of the family who denied that the couple had been fighting.

The woman who was first attacked was badly injured, and her mother, who left the car in an effort to save her daughter, was killed, The Beijing News reported. The woman’s husband was uninjured, as was their child, who remained in the vehicle, the newspaper said.

The park, near a famous section of the Great Wall in a county north of central Beijing, has had serious safety problems before. In March, a park employee was killed by an elephant . A security guard who stepped out of a patrol vehicle was killed by a tiger in 2014.

In 2009, an 18-year-old man was killed by a tiger in the park after he scaled a fence with two friends to enter the animals’ enclosure. The men had apparently been trying to take a shortcut through the park after a hike along the Great Wall, reported Xinhua, a state-run news agency.

While the number of wild tigers in China has dropped to fewer than two dozen living in the far northeast, where they cross back and forth into Russia, thousands of tigers are raised in parks around the country. Visitors to parks in cities like Harbin can pay to feed them, sometimes with live animals. Critics say such breeding programs do little to help wild populations and are sometimes used as cover for the illegal trade in animal parts, like tiger pelts and wine made from their bones.

Woman Killed by Tiger After Exiting Her Vehicle at Beijing Animal Park

CCTV footage shows a woman being mauled and dragged away by a tiger.

— -- One woman died and another was severely injured after a tiger attacked them when they exited their vehicle while at the Beijing Badaling Wildlife World this weekend, according to Yanqing County government.

The incident, caught in part on surveillance video, took place on Saturday at an outdoor, drive-through animal park in China, where visitors can drive around in their cars and view exotic animals as if on a safari. The tragedy occurred when one woman exited her vehicle while in the Siberian tiger enclosure part of the animal park.

Surveillance footage shows a woman exiting the passenger side of the vehicle, walking over to the driver's side, and then standing outside of the vehicle while she seems to speak with someone inside the car. Suddenly a tiger pounces on her, dragging the woman away from the vehicle and off camera.

Two more people then jump out of the car, running after the woman and tiger, disappearing off camera.

The woman who died was a 57-year-old mother who was trying to save her daughter from the tiger, according to the South China Morning Post. The daughter, in her 30s, who is reportedly the one seen being dragged away by the tiger in the surveillance video, was severely injured, the paper reported.

Badaling Wildlife World was immediately closed following the incident, and an investigation is underway, according to the Yanqing County government's official blog.

Video captures woman dragged by tiger after stepping out of car

Updated on: July 24, 2016 / 5:37 PM EDT / CBS/AP

BEIJING - Siberian tigers at a wildlife park in Beijing mauled a woman to death and wounded another when they stepped out of their car in an enclosure, a Chinese state-run newspaper said.

A tiger pounced on one of the women after she got out of a private car in which she was touring the Beijing Badaling Wildlife World on Saturday, the Legal Evening News reported.

The second woman was killed by another tiger that leapt at her after she stepped out of the vehicle to try to help her companion, the report said.

Video footage shows the first woman stepping out of a car, and the tiger pouncing on her. The tiger drags the woman just out of view of the camera, as another woman runs out of the car to help.

The Yanqing district government confirmed in an official microblog post that the tiger attack took place at the park, which lies at the foot of the Great Wall. It offered few details but said the injured person was being treated.

Visitors are allowed to drive their own vehicles around the park, but are forbidden from getting out while in certain enclosures, the report said.

A woman who answered the phone at the park refused to comment on the attack, saying only that the park was closed for two days due to forecasts of heavy rain.

Tiger mauls grandmother to death at Beijing safari park

Beijing Badaling Wildlife World promises visitors a safari experience just 30 miles from the center of the Chinese capital — customers can drive their own cars through a park where lions, tigers and other wild game roam free. But on Saturday afternoon, one family’s outing went horribly wrong, ending with a Siberian tiger mauling a 57-year-old grandmother to death.

The incident, caught on security camera footage aired by state-run China Central Television, is chilling: A woman can be seen on the video stepping out from the front passenger’s side of a white sedan and walking around to the driver’s side. As her husband opens his door, a tiger suddenly bounds up to the vehicle, knocking the woman to the pavement and dragging her off the roadway.

The man rushes out of the car to come to his wife’s aid, along with the woman’s mother, who had been sitting in the back seat along with the couple’s son.

Although park staff appeared on the scene almost immediately in a green SUV, a second tiger attacked the older woman, killing her on the spot, authorities said.

The younger woman, who according to local media reports is in her 30s, was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive. The park was closed pending an investigation.

Why the woman got out of the vehicle remains unclear. Park visitors are required to sign an agreement saying they will lock their doors, keep their windows up and not get out of their vehicles while driving through the 1.5-square-mile facility, which sits near the Great Wall northwest of Beijing. Loudspeakers along the driving route continually remind visitors to stay in their cars.

See the most-read stories in World News this hour »

Although some initial reports suggested the woman left the car because of an argument, later accounts quoting colleagues of the husband said the family believed they had already driven out of the wild-animal zone when the woman got out of the car.

Badaling Wildlife World’s website says visitors can “feed the beasts” and “get close to wild animals.” In one section with particularly unfortunate wording, it says: “You can get to know the process of returning animals to their wild state and feel the meaning of ‘survival of the fittest.’”

A Beijing government tourism site describes Badaling Wildlife World as the largest wildlife zoo in the country, with about 10,000 animals including bears, kangaroos, monkeys, wolves and peacocks. Admission costs about $13.50 for adults. The park is also known as Badaling Safari World.

It wasn’t the first deadly incident at the facility. In 2009, three young men who were on an outing at the Great Wall decided to take a shortcut home and hopped the park’s fence; an 18-year-old was killed by a tiger.

In a 2012 incident that echoed the events of this weekend, a female visitor got out of her car — apparently to urinate by the roadside — and was bitten by a tiger. She survived.

In 2014, a park ranger was bitten by a tiger and died. And this past spring, a park staffer who was cleaning the elephant habitat was trampled to death by one of the pachyderms.

The U.S. has at least one similar drive-through wild animal park, called Lion Country Safari, in Palm Beach County, Fla. Another branch of Lion Country Safari was located in Orange County and was open from 1970 to 1984.

a lion's eye

African lions (pictured, an animal at South Africa's Kapama Game Reserve) evolved to be top predators—and act that way when given the opportunity.

Why Did Lion Kill Tourist in South Africa?

The lioness was doing what it evolved to do best—being a top predator, a scientist says.

The lion that killed an American tourist at a South African park is a tragic example of what lions evolved to do best—being a top predator, a scientist says.

According to reports, the African lioness attacked the female tourist through the open window of a car in Lion Park , a wildlife attraction 19 miles (30 kilometers) north of Johannesburg. The tour operator who was driving the car sustained injuries on his arm trying to fight off the animal.

"Almost any organism around lions might be a potential prey item, and for people to think that they are an exception is folly," says Luke Dollar , program director for National Geographic's Big Cats Initiative.

"I would imagine that every other primate that co-exists with big cats is acutely aware of the position they hold relative to the top predators of the world." (Also see " California Death Prompts Questions About Lion Attacks .")

Dollar says danger arises when we allow ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security in the presence of lions or other carnivores.

"We don't have claws or big canines or size as an advantage," he says.

Respect the King of the Jungle

Dollar estimates that dozens, if not hundreds, of people are attacked by lions each year.

In the wild, old or sick lions may target people because they cannot catch their normal prey, and people are generally easier gets.

"If a person is standing next to an impala and a lion decides it's going to eat something, that impala is probably going to get away and that person is probably not." ( Learn more about big cats and their behaviors .)

That said, people should not be afraid to observe lions in the wild, Dollar said, but should know that they might be viewed as potential prey and to act accordingly.

For instance, the Lion Park's rules say that visitors keep their windows closed while driving through the grounds as a way to prevent such animal attacks. (Also see "Pittsburgh Zoo Tragedy: Why Did African Wild Dogs Attack Boy?" )

"I hope that, as with any tragedy, some good can come from this," he says.

"We need to remember that we call these animals the kings of the jungle for a reason," says Dollar. "We need to respect what they are and their natural behaviors."

Moment Buffalo is hunted and killed by huge lion pack

Posted: May 5, 2024 | Last updated: May 5, 2024

Tourists on a safari in Kenya were stunned to witness a pack of lions hunt and kill a buffalo. The extraordinary event, which locals said is rarely caught on camera, happened on April 29 in the Maasai Mara nature reserve, southwestern Kenya. Marty Keane, 48, managed to film the scene and said: "Watching it my adrenaline took over and I was trying to make sure I was documenting what I was seeing. "I had goosebumps the entire time, it was such a humbling reminder of the power of the lion." In the prolonged attack, a helpless buffalo is encircled by a large pack of lions who slowly maul it before tipping it on its back and killing it. Marty and his wife, Thais Asper Keane, 40, who live in Miami, Florida, were on the trip to celebrate Thais' birthday and their wedding anniversary. Marti said: "The Maasai Mara is the most incredible place either of us has visited, it's just a stunning place." "Our tour guide said he’s done thousands of game drives and has never seen anything like it!" But it was not the only surprise for the couple, as that very night their resort was totally flooded as the Talek river burst its banks, forcing them to be helicoptered to safety. "The water was up to my waist and my wife's chest, it was very scary, we are truly thankful that we made it out alive."

American Woman Killed by Lion Attack in South African Safari Park

The 29-year-old Katherine Chappell was killed when a lion jumped through an open window of her car driving through Lion Park early Monday

A lion killed a 29-year-old American woman and injured a man at a wildlife park in South Africa early Monday.

The attack took place at Lion Park – a wildlife park located between Johannesburg and Pretoria that offers self-driven and guided tours.

The woman – who ABC News has identified as Katherine Chappell – was riding in the passenger seat of an SUV taking photos when a lion jumped through the open window and mauled her, Johannesburg’s Eye Witness News reports . The driver, a tour guide, was injured while trying to rescue the woman.

“They had their windows all the way down, which is strictly against policy,” Scott Simpson, assistant operations manager at Lion Park told the Associated Press . “The lion bit the lady through the window.”

While park staff were able to chase the lion away, Simpson told ABC News that the woman died while receiving treatment from emergency services.

“We can confirm that a U.S. citizen was killed in Lion Park in Johannesburg on June 1,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson said in an email to PEOPLE. The spokesperson added that they are providing all possible services, but would not comment further out of respect for the privacy of the family.

PEOPLE has reached out to Lion Park for comment.

Lion Park was featured in a November 60 Minutes story as one of dozens of parks in South Africa where tourists pay to pet lion cubs. The story alleged that once these lions reach maturity, they are sold off for “canned hunts” – where people pay to shoot lions in an enclosed area – as they are too dangerous to be around tourists.

A STARVING, injured lioness and apparent errors by a safari guide led to a British public schoolboy being killed and eaten after being dragged screaming from his tent in the early hours of Sunday.

David Pleydell-Bouverie, 19, was acting as an apprentice guide on a photographic walking safari in Zimbabwe when a pride of lions, led by a lioness with a broken leg, attacked looking for easy food. Game rangers found parts of his dismembered body up to 20 metres from his tent, and confirmed that some of his clothing and body parts were found inside the stomachs of two of the lions which had been tracked and shot.

The teenager, who was the nephew of the Earl of Radnor, was having an extended stay in Zimbabwe during his gap year after leaving Harrow school last year. He was due to start a history degree at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in October.

His grieving father, Richard Pleydell-Bouverie, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, described the killing as the "most unbearable and appalling tragedy". His mother, Victoria, is expected to arrive today at the Changachirere Camp where the tragedy happened, part of the Matusadona National Park, 300 miles north-west of Harare.

The British High Commission has sent diplomats to the area to monitor the investigation into the attack.

A spokesman for the wildlife police service in Harare, said last night: "This particular pride is one that is often seen by tourists in the area and there has been no history of man-eating attacks in the past.

"But the group was led by an old she-lion who was struggling with a broken leg. We believe she attacked out of hunger, the camp provided a relatively straightforward target."

Bradley Fouche, the guide with the group who was sharing a tent with the young man, set fire to his shirt to scare away the lions after being woken by screams at 1am. His rifle was in a vehicle 100 yards away.

The guide was also criticised for sleeping in a tent away from the main group of tourists, and for having the tent flaps unzipped. Lions will not attack a tent if they cannot see inside it. He is expected to face disciplinary charges and could lose his professional licence.

Last night the head of the safari company spoke of his shock and sadness at the death. "David was in the company of a highly respected guide with a reputation for steadiness and safety," said Ivan Carter, of Ivan Carter Safari."This has been an extremely tragic event and the first time a person has been killed in this manner on a photographic safari."

TOM

Wow. That's about all i have to say. That guy made a mistake...big time.

Well lions have to eat too! OK.....I am sure that will get some flack so let me try and soften my tactless response. Of course I feel sorry for the guy getting shredded and his poor family having to watch it. But really.........this was a bad case of 'dumb and dumber'. Not sure what happened with this in the end, but probably the lions got euthanized for some urban tourist doing something really stupid. They do it every year all over the world. Walking up to big game with camera in hand.....bears, bison bulls, cow elk with calves, moose and elk bulls during the rut.....and lions. Call me an insensitive lout, but I have a hard time drumming up a lot of honest to goodness sympathy for people that do really stupid things.

Big5

Like Skyline the only ones I have any real sympathy for are his wife and kids as they were involuntarily placed in the position to watch a fool's final act. Yeah, okay, we've all done foolish things, but there really are some limits. Even for foolishness. "Here kitty, kitty, pose for the camera."

What Can i say they probably shot the lions for this person's stupid mistake. Most people dont know this but we have tested this when a female lioness sees you and stands up from that point it will take her 2.5 seconds to reach 60km/h.

  • Aug 13, 2010

The stupid guy probably died, his family is in shock and the lion (who already had a shitty life in that cage) was sort of shot by a 9mm handgun and died slowly and in a lot of pain ... nice going of this guy ...

Well it’s not pretty and not the lion king either but I am sure the greenies will be able to say that wild animals and humans should go hand in hand I mean what have we got to fear from them anyway LOL! Just my 2 cents. Best Regards Louis van Bergen

A Houston firetruck makes it way through flood water in North Woodland Hills after severe flooding.

Houston officials warn of ‘catastrophic’ flooding as heavy storms slam region

Flood watch in effect through Sunday with evacuations in some areas as more rain forecast for already soaked region

The Houston area was under threat of worsening flood conditions on Saturday, a day after heavy storms slammed the region – and authorities warned those in low-lying areas to evacuate before an expected surge of water the likes of which haven’t been seen since Hurricane Harvey.

A flood watch remained in effect through Sunday afternoon as forecasters predicted additional rainfall on Saturday night, bringing another 1-3in (2.5-7.6cm) of water to the soaked region and the likelihood of major flooding.

Friday’s storms forced numerous high-water rescues, including some from the rooftops of flooded homes. Officials redoubled urgent instructions for residents in low-lying areas to evacuate, warning that the worst was still to come.

Crews have now rescued more than 400 people from their homes, rooftops and roads and others are preparing to evacuate their property.

“This threat is ongoing and it’s going to get worse. It is not your typical river flood,” said Harris county judge Lina Hidalgo, the top elected official in the nation’s third-largest county.

She described the predicted surge of water as “catastrophic” and said several hundred structures were at risk of flooding. There had already been at least two dozen water rescues in the county, in addition to 30 pets moved to safety. Schools in the path of the flooding canceled classes and roads jammed as authorities closed highways taking on water.

For weeks, drenching rains in Texas and parts of Louisiana have filled reservoirs and saturated the ground. Floodwaters partly submerged cars and roads this week across parts of south-eastern Texas, north of Houston, where high waters reached the roofs of some homes.

More than 11in (28cm) of rain fell during a 24-hour period that ended on Friday morning in the northern Houston suburb of Spring, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities in Houston had not reported any deaths or injuries. The city of more than 2 million people is one of the most flood-prone metro areas in the country and has long experienced devastating weather.

Hurricane Harvey in 2017 dumped historic rainfall on the area, flooding thousands of homes and resulting in more than 60,000 rescues by government personnel across Harris county.

Of particular concern was an area along the San Jacinto River in the north-eastern part of Harris county, which was expected to continue rising as more rain falls and officials release extra water from an already full reservoir. Hidalgo on Thursday issued a mandatory evacuation order for those living along portions of the river.

Shelters have opened across the region, including nine from the American Red Cross.

The greater Houston area covers about 10,000 sq miles (26,000 sq km) – a footprint slightly bigger than New Jersey. It is crisscrossed by about 1,700 miles (2,736km) of channels, creeks and bayous that drain into the Gulf of Mexico, about 50 miles (80km) to the south-east from downtown.

The city’s system of bayous and reservoirs was built to drain heavy rains. But engineering initially designed nearly 100 years ago has struggled to keep up with the city’s growth and bigger storms.
