CHRYSLER Voyager 2000 - 2003

The fourth generation of the Chrysler Voyager was launched in 2000 and it was available in two wheelbases, to offer more room for up to seven passengers.

It was the first generation of the Voyager that crossed the Atlantic, landing in Europe with specially designed engines. For the Europeans, the thirsty 3.8-liter unit was not a really preferred option, so Chrysler employed the Italian engine manufacturer VM Motory to deal with that issue. But even in that version the car didn't last too long on the market. The MPV market was split between the French, Italians. and German car-makers.

From the outside, the Chrysler Voyager had a mature look with a modern front fascia and its typical grille with horizontal slats. The raked windshield looked as a normal follow of the hood angle. The unibody style vehicle had the Voyager name for the short wheelbase and Grand Voyager for the longer version.

Inside, it offered room for up to seven in the Grand Voyager version. To ease the access, the side sliding doors were electrically operated, as well as the big liftgate. There were a lot of options for comfort in the Chrysler Voyager, including climate control, CD-player, leather seats, and cupholders for everyone in the room.

Under the hood there were two diesel options and a 3.3-liter V6 for the European market. In the U.S., the biggest version featured a 3.8-liter unit. The standard transmission, depending on the engine, was either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

The Chrysler Voyager is, simply put, a less expensive version of the Chrysler Pacifica. We're all for less expensive, but there are a few trade-offs. For example, you don't get the Pacifica's nifty second-row Stow 'n Go seats that easily fold into the floor when not needed. Instead, to create maximum cargo storage capacity in the Voyager, you must unlatch and remove the second-row seating.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2021 Chrysler Voyager L 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl 9A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.61 per gallon for regular unleaded in New Jersey.

Now, for the 2021 model year, there is further separation between a Pacifica and a Voyager. The Pacifica gets a styling refresh, wider availability of all-wheel drive, a new Pinnacle luxury trim level and more. The Voyager does not. Aside from improved safety technology, it is the same as it was in 2020.

Chrysler does, however, pass a torch to the 2021 Voyager. Now that the positively ancient Dodge Grand Caravan has gone to that big scrapyard in the sky, the Voyager stands as the least expensive minivan on the market. But you might find that spending a little more to get the more fully featured Pacifica, or other vans such as the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna, will be worth it in the long run.

What's New for 2022?

The Voyager goes fleet-only for 2022, meaning it's no longer offered for sale to the general public. The base L trim has been dropped, leaving the LX as the only option. The van gains the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, Stow 'n Go second row seats, power sliding rear doors, a power-operated rear liftgate, a new in-cabin air filtration system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel all as standard. A Safety and Premium Group package adds blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, in-dash navigation, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment display, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Silver Mist is now an available exterior color.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Chrysler Voyager starts at $33,610.

While you'll need to be a fleet customer to order it, the Voyager's value-oriented packaging offers plenty of equipment as standard. Those features include automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels, three-zone manual climate control, and a lot more.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Mechanically, the Voyager is identical to the Pacifica, using the same 287-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given this van forgoes some of the features that weigh down its brother, the Voyager likely weighs less than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to beat that time. Don't hold your breath for a hybrid. Chrysler will reserve that powertrain for the pricier minivan in its lineup.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested achieved 31 mpg. The Chrysler vans both earn EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Voyager's 22 mpg combined score matches that of the Carnival and Odyssey, both chief competitors. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the exterior styling, powertrain, and chassis, the Voyager's interior mimics that of the Pacifica, albeit with fewer creature comforts. You won't find leather seats, automatic climate control, or rear-seat entertainment here, but the Voyager provides the same Stow 'n Go capability that makes the Pacifica so versatile. Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So, while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able accommodate what its brother could (i.e., 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up).

Infotainment and Connectivity

Chrysler provides a 3.5-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center stack, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a six-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation. Bluetooth streaming and integrated voice control are also included but in-dash navigation, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment display, and SiriusXM radio are optional.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Looking for driver-assistance features ? You won't find many in the Voyager and nothing of the like is offered as standard. For more information about the Voyager's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

• Available automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
• Available rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking
• Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chrysler's warranty coverage is fairly typical for the class. The Toyota Sienna offers more value here in the form of a two-year/25,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

The Chrysler Voyager is essentially a Chrysler Pacifica , but with older styling and fewer features. This minivan is sold to vehicle fleets only—not individual buyers—as a straightforward , cost-effective people hauler. The Voyager enters 2023 with no changes from the 2022 model.

What We Think

Really, it's a bit of a shame Chrysler doesn't sell the Voyager to the public. Sure, the Pacifica is better, but there's something appreciable about a low-frills, function-focused , somewhat old-school people mover. Many budget-conscious three-row SUV buyers would probably be better off with such a minivan .

That's especially true because the Voyager drives quite nicely. Like the Pacifica, it has a strong V-6 engine and handles better than any minivan needs to. Unlike the Pacifica, it doesn't have Chrysler's latest tech and driver assist features, but the Voyager's power-sliding doors, Stow 'n Go second-row seats , and overall appearance keep it appealing. It has everything it needs to get the crew from one place to the next, and not much more.

If you're offered a Voyager at the car rental counter, give it consideration—whatever SUV could be your alternative might not necessarily be better.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The Voyager is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 287 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. That's connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and FWD. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph should take about 6.7 seconds. Expect fuel economy to come in at 19/28 mpg city/highway. Unlike the Pacifica, the Voyager is not available with AWD or a plug-in hybrid powertrain .

Safety Ratings and Features

Crash safety has historically been a strong point for the Voyager. The 2022 model earned a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and Good scores across the board from the IIHS , the highest possible evaluations from those respective bodies. Available driver assist and active safety features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear automatic emergency braking.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Despite the Voyager's cavernous overall interior capacity, its second- and third-row seats feel firm, flat, and sized more for children than adults.

Every 2023 Voyager comes equipped with a 3.5-inch gauge display and 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Two devices can be synced via Bluetooth simultaneously, and over-the-air updates are possible. Audio plays through a six-speaker system.

"A nice quiet van."

"This is my eighth Chrysler minivan. All of them have gone well over 100,000 miles with no problems with engine or transmission. My 2002 went 275 miles with no problems and was retired when the rust took over. This Pacifica is very quiet and a pleasure to drive. The gas mileage is a bit less than the 2014 Town and Country it replaced. I have three complaints on this van. The driver's headrest pushes my head too far foreword. I use a cushion behind my back so that I can sit with my head up straight. The dash came loaded with shiny surfaces that had to be covered with glare free material and flat black paint. This has been a problem with these vans since 2006. The vision at corners to the passengers side is limited. A lot of care must be used at corners to make sure that there are no vehicles coming from the right. This touring L Pluss has many features that make driving safer."

"Bought this with the intention to buy a Toyota Sienna. After test driving both, really no comparison. Pacifica drove and rode much nicer. Controls more user friendly. Took on a 3500 mile trip and my back did not hurt once, also 32mpg on that trip. Lots of room and the kids love the entertainment system. So far at 3 years and almost 70000 miles no issues to mention. I'll try to review again in another 3 years. If your thinking Honda or Toyota, you owe it to yourself to compare Chrysler. Love to drive our Pacifica!"

"EXCELLENT VEHICLE"

"After reading reviews from some owners of the 2018 CHRYSLER PACIFICA, I decided to write a review on my PACIFICA. I read reviews from a number of owners who had both some major and minor issues with their PACIFICA. After owning my 2018 PACIFICA for 18 months I have had no negative issues with the car. It now has around 14,000 miles on it, has been back to the dealer only once and that was for an oil change. We have owned mini-vans for nearly 20 years and have owned both the HONDA ODDYSEY and the TOYOTA SIENNA. Both were excellent vehicles. Once, a number of years ago, we rode in a CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUINTRY. I felt it was a piece of junk! It took awhile for me to even consider looking at the CHRYSLER PACIFICA. We chose our PACIFICA with the ELITE TRIM, maroon in color, with the white leather interior. It has all of the safety features and options that we could possibly need. A couple of weeks ago, we drove from Wisconsin to our winter home in Florida, and according to the onboard computer during the 1,450 mile trip, we averaged 17.5 mpg and that was driving between 75 and 80 mph. The Stow and Go second row rear seats are excellent. I personally think that CHRYSLER took all of the best features from the HONDA and the TOYOTA and incorporated them into the PACIFICA. I received a fair trade-in price for my TOYOTA SIENNA, plus I received nearly $5,000.00 in factory rebates and incentives. I would recommend anyone considering a new mini-van to check out the PACIFICA."

There is a single LX trim in the range, and it's powered by an old-school naturally aspirated V6 gas engine with 287 horsepower. At one point, millions of minivans plied US roads, but today, they have fallen out of fashion in favor of crossovers and SUVs, so the only Voyager rivals left are the Kia Carnival, Honda Odyssey , Toyota Sienna , and the Voyager's in-house sibling, the Pacifica. Since last year, the car has only been available to fleet buyers, so the Chrysler Voyager minivan we review here isn't sold to the general public anymore.

What's the Price of the 2023 Chrysler Voyager?

The Chrysler Voyager LX's MSRP is $35,495. To put it into perspective, the cheapest Pacifica touring trim will cost nearly $2,000 more and the Kia Carnival LX just over $1,000 less. This price is exclusive of the $1,595 destination charge.

2023 Chrysler Voyager Handling and Driving Impressions

Minivans aren't built to handle like sports cars and so it proves with the Voyager. That said, it bowls along nicely, with well-damped suspension and a comfortable ride, it just doesn't offer any excitement with its lack of steering feedback, soft brake pedal, and generally top-heavy feel typical of a minivan. It will hang on gamely if you tackle a corner, but it's not made for that and feels out of sorts indulging in such antics. Settle into a cruise at the speed limit and you find what it's all about, as it can transport a full complement of passengers in comfort from point A to point B - the very reason for its existence. The engine won't set the drag strip on fire and is probably more than adequate for its intended use, being kept nicely in its usable powerband by the nine-speed automatic transmission.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Chrysler Voyager A Good Minivan?

The Voyager is probably best at what a minivan should be for the typical fleet buyer - a versatile, practical, and comfortable people mover with lots of space and few frills. The Kia Carnival, with its SUV looks and more modern design, might clinch it for a private buyer, but its small third row and fixed second-row seats will see the Chrysler pull ahead for hard-working fleet duty at an unbeatable price. Better get your order in, because soon the Voyager will be discontinued, and then you'll have to go for the more expensive Pacifica, or a rival.

What 2023 Chrysler Voyager Model Should I Buy?

There's a single trim and it's devoid of features, so we'd consider at least adding the Safety and Premium Group package to equip ours with the minimum number of driver assists that we'll need to make moving people around a little bit more stress-free and safer. Other than that, the Voyager should be left as is to make the most of its value proposition.
