Honest Air Mauritius Review: What it’s Really Like Flying with Air Mauritius (2024)

Sharing is caring!

Last Updated on: 30th January 2024, 10:42 am

We have now traveled with Air Mauritius on multiple occasions including with our 9-month-old infant son. So, I have several first-hand experiences of flying with the airline to share in this Air Mauritius review.

On both occasions, we hopped on our Air Mauritius flight from Johannesburg and headed to paradise.

This is my totally honest Air Mauritius review. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like flying with this airline, you’ll find out here.

Each of my four-hour Air Mauritius flights was honestly some of the best experiences I have ever had up in the air.

As a result, I am considering flying with Air Mauritius whenever I can. Luckily for me, Air Mauritius has routes to various other destinations around the world.

To better understand why having a good flight experience is important, read on…

In this article, I’ll provide an honest review of my experience flying with Air Mauritius, covering everything from the quality of their economy class seats to their in-flight entertainment and customer service.

Key Takeaways

  • I have flown Air Mauritius on multiple occasions, including while overcoming severe aerophobia and with a 9-month-old toddler.
  • My review covers economy class as I have not flown Air Mauritius business class yet.
  • I’ll evaluate the airline’s customer service and in-flight experience.
  • Finally, I’ll provide an objective rating for Air Mauritius based on my experience and research.

The Background Story

In other words, why you can trust this is a truly honest Air Mauritius review.

I am a nervous flyer 🙁

I know, not ideal for a person who has a profession that involves travel. However, becoming a travel writer was the best thing I ever did to overcome my aerophobia.

I traveled a lot as a child visiting far-off places with my parents and other family members. There were never any problems. But, at some point between high school and university, this irrational fear set in, and boarding a plane would send me into a panic attack. I tried to move past it but it got so bad I stopped flying altogether for a number of years.

However, I soon became more afraid of not seeing this world than being on a plane.

I boarded a plane again for the first time in 2016 ( Zanzibar honeymoon) and never looked back. After that trip, the travel bug bit me again. So, I focused my attention on travel writing as a means to overcome this fear.

Why I Love Flying with Air Mauritius

Now, I am merely nervous when boarding a plane, instead of terrified.

This brings me back to my Air Mauritius review.

As a person who has overcome aerophobia, a good flight experience is very important to me.

Since I started flying again in 2016, I have flown with many different airlines to various places across the world, both domestic and international. This has given me a unique perspective on what makes a great airline.

Air Mauritius checked all the boxes for me in terms of the usual things such as:

  • Safety rating
  • Friendly staff
  • Flight experience
  • Family-friendly

However, for me, it was the small subtle, almost intangible aspects of the experience that really made an impression.

Read on for all the experience-based details of this Air Mauritius review…

About Air Mauritius

Air Mauritius is the flag carrier airline of Mauritius , based in the country’s capital city of Port Louis. The airline was founded in 1967 and has since grown to serve over 20 destinations across Asia , Europe , Africa , and the Indian Ocean.

Air Mauritius currently operates a fleet of 11 aircraft, including Airbus A319, A330, and A350 models. The airline is committed to environmentally sustainable practices and has implemented several initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint.

In addition to passenger flights, Air Mauritius offers cargo services and operates a regional airline subsidiary, Air Mauritius Regional.

Air Mauritius Economy Review

Air mauritius airbus a350.

Let’s get into the juicy details of this Air Mauritius review.

Air Mauritius recently added two new planes to their fleet to service their route from Johannesburg. The two Airbus A350-900s are part of the latest generation of aircraft created by Airbus.

On the way to Mauritius, we flew in ‘Le Morne Brabant’ and our return flight was on ‘Pieter Both’. I absolutely loved that they had named their aircraft after the two most famous mountains in the country.

From the moment we boarded I could tell that this flight was going to be significantly different from past experiences. I was immediately impressed by how superior their product was. This made me realize that Air Mauritius is much more than just a holiday airline as I had expected.

The Features

The Air Mauritius A350 planes definitely focus on the well-being of passengers whether in Business Class or Economy Class.

In this Air Mauritius review, I’ll focus on the features of both although this isn’t really an Air Mauritius Business Class review.

The features listed below make a big difference in comfort and overall experience:

  • Larger and more spacious Economy Class Cabin
  • Full-flat Business Class seats
  • State-of-the-art entertainment system
  • Full HD screens
  • Inflight connectivity
  • A quieter cabin (4x less noise energy)
  • Various mood lighting options
  • Full LED ambient lighting to mimic a natural sunrise and sunset for better well-being.
  • A lower cabin altitude (reduces jetlag)
  • Advanced air management systems
  • The draft-free environment at the optimum temperature
  • The widest seats of any jetliner in this category
  • Generous leg room in Economy Class
  • Larger panoramic windows

Our Air Mauritius Experience

Now onto my personal experience to round out this Air Mauritius review:

Due to all these lovely features, our 4-hour flight s felt rather luxurious – even in Economy Class.

The seats are comfortable and I enjoyed more legroom than I had on a 10-hour flight to Madrid on my way to Portugal last year. On our first flight to Mauritius, our seats were in the middle row, but the seat between us was empty, so we had enough space to stretch out a bit.

On the flight back my husband had a window seat and I was in the middle with another passenger in the aisle. Although I had less space I still felt comfortable enough.

On our flights with our baby, we sat right at the front of the middle rows where they could attach a bassinet and we had 4 seats for the 3 of us both there and back which was incredibly comfortable. They go out of their way to make the flight as nice as possible for families which I truly appreciated.

Wondering where to stay in Mauritius? These are the 11 best resorts in Mauritius for families !

I tend to avoid eating airline food if possible and usually bring my own snacks along. But the dinner during our evening flight was rather good.

Now onto the entertainment selection, which was great and really helped me keep my mind off my fears. They had a wide selection of new movies, series, games, and music to choose from. The games and series kept me occupied during the trip to Mauritius and a comedy movie held my attention on our flight back.

Air Mauritius Rating

Based on my personal experience and research, I would give Air Mauritius a solid 5-star rating. I found the airline to be comfortable and accommodating. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the safety record is excellent.

Plus the flight attendants treated my family (especially my son) like a VIP on both flights we took with him. As any travel mom or parent can attest, the way your kids are treated can make or break a flight experience.

It’s important to keep in mind, however, that Air Mauritius primarily serves destinations in Africa and Asia, so flights may not always be as frequent or convenient as other airlines.

Air Mauritius Review: FAQs

Overall, I was impressed with the experience on both our Air Mauritius flights.

The flights were smooth and unbelievably comfortable from take-off to landing. On the flight to Mauritius, I even felt safe enough to lie down and take a short nap which I basically never do when flying.

As this Air Mauritius review shows, it is definitely a superb airline and its Airbus A350 planes are of the highest quality. I would recommend booking your flight with them to any of their destinations.

However, my top destination would be a return trip to their tropical island paradise of Mauritius!

Has this Air Mauritius review convinced you to try the airline?

This post contains all our practical travel tips for your vacation in Mauritius.

Who is Mauritius perfect for as a destination?

For many people, Mauritius is the honeymoon destination par excellence and in fact we met many couples spending their honeymoon there.

But Mauritius isn’t just for newlyweds. Mauritius is an ideal destination for people who love dream beaches, because there the island is full of them.

Mauritius is also a great destination for everyone who wants to combine their beach vacation with a bit of sightseeing and culture.

Mauritius has a lot to offer in this regard: colorful temples, huge waterfalls, evergreen national parks, and old colonial buildings. So let’s get one thing straight: Mauritius is definitely very diverse!

The best time to travel to Mauritius

Mauritius is a good destination all year round. Since Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are different from ours. The Mauritian summer coincides with our winter, and vice versa.

But it’s warm and sunny on Mauritius all year round. Even in the coldest months from June to August, temperatures still reach 26 to 28 degrees during the day.

The best time to travel and the peak season for Mauritius is between September and December , when it’s mostly unpleasant and cold back home.

In Mauritius, you can then expect relatively constant daytime temperatures around 30 degrees and the risk of rain showers is relatively low.

European spring from April to June is also a good time to travel. During this time, it’s somewhat cooler in Mauritius than during the peak season from September to December. But then the island isn’t as crowded and the prices for hotels are considerably cheaper.

We were in Mauritius from the end of May to the middle of June and enjoyed bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures almost every day. It hardly ever rained.

There’s a big difference between the east coast and the west coast during this time. Since the wind usually comes from the east, this side is a lot more unpleasant outside the main season and there’s significantly more rainfall than in the west of the island.

In the period from January to March you have to be prepared for more rainy days in Mauritius than in the rest of the year. It’s still warm though. During European summer from the end of June to mid-August, temperatures in Mauritius are at their lowest.

Of course it’s still pleasant enough with daytime temperatures of around the 25 degrees, but it might be a bit cooler than at home.

Booking a vacation in Mauritius

If you want to travel to Mauritius, you have to choose between different options when booking. Either you book your flight and your accommodation separately or you book a package vacation.

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. When you choose a package vacation, you don’t have to worry about a thing and can benefit from cheap package deals.

But if you book separately, you also have the option of trying out different hotels in Mauritius and you can also choose from a wider range of places to stay.

We’ve put together all the information and tips to help you find the option that works best for you.

Flights to Mauritius

The number of direct flights from Europe to Mauritius is still pretty limited.

A very interesting option is flying with the Arabic airline Emirates . Emirates offers daily flies to Mauritius from several European cities.

If you don’t like long-distance flights, then Emirates is the best option for you, as the flight time of approximately 12 hours is split up into two approximately equal flights of about 6 hours.

Plus you also have the interesting option of taking a longer stopover in Dubai on the inbound or outbound flight to explore the sights of Dubai for a few days.

If you just want to enjoy your vacation without having to deal with booking a flight, a place to stay, or transfer from the airport, then a package deal is a good choice.

Where to stay in Mauritius: Our tips

The selection of hotels in Mauritius is pretty huge. There are a lot of luxury hotels on the island that really leave nothing to be desired. Of course, they come with a price tag attached, but you generally get what you pay for.

We tested a number of hotels in Mauritius ourselves and want to recommend one hotel per price category in this post.

Pure luxury: The Residence

There are a great many luxury hotels on the east coast of Mauritius, among them The Residence. We were there for three days and absolutely loved it: very nice rooms, excellent service, very good food, and simply an absolute all-round feel-good feeling.

The hotel has its price, but in this case it’s really justified. If you want to treat yourself, the Residence gives you the perfect opportunity to do so.

You can also rent out kayaks or stand-up paddles at many hotels in Mauritius.

Practical travel tips for your Mauritius travel planning

A post about the best travel tips for Mauritius wouldn’t be complete without practical information for preparing your vacation.

What should you to pack for Mauritius?

Even though it’s warm all year round, you should still make sure to take a warm sweater and long pants. Especially during the off-season from April to August, it can get a bit cooler in the evenings.

Mauritius uses a different power outlet system to most of Europe. Most hotels offer adapters or have also installed standard European outlets in addition to the Mauritian ones. But just to be on the safe side, we still recommend packing a travel adapter .

Sunscreen is also really important. Especially during the peak travel season from September to December, the sun blazes down on Mauritius, and as a pale European you’re very likely to catch a sunburn. You can get sunscreen everywhere on the island, but it’s much more expensive than at home.

Mosquitoes can be a real plague in Mauritius. Especially in the national parks, there are lots of mosquitoes all year round. Malaria or dengue fever aren’t a danger in Mauritius, but mosquito bites are annoying nevertheless. Mosquito repellent is useful in any case, but you can just as easily buy it locally.

Apart from that, there’s nothing special you need for Mauritius. We recommend taking a look at our list of what to pack for Southeast Asia where we show you what we packed on our journeys through Asia. Since the climate in Mauritius is very similar, you can pretty much use the same list.

Money and travel expenses in Mauritius

The official currency in Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). The exchange rate is pretty much exactly 40 MUR to 1 euro. Of course you can find ATMs at the airport and in the larger cities.

Make sure to take a credit card with no foreign transaction fees so you can withdraw money worldwide for free.

Mauritius isn’t a cheap country to visit. You can easily spend a small fortune on the island, but you don’t have to. It’s certainly possible to have a cheap vacation in Mauritius.

To give you an idea of common prices, here’s a short overview:

  • Bottle of water (1.5 l) = 20-30 MUR (0.50 to 0.75 euros)
  • Bus ticket = approx. 30 MUR (0.75 euros)
  • Gas (1l) = approx. 40 MUR (1 euro)
  • Simple, local food = 120 to 240 MUR (3 to 6 euros)
  • Western food = 200 to 600 MUR (5 to 15 euros)

Currency in Mauritius

Tipping in Mauritius

Tipping never used to be all that common in Mauritius. But thanks to all the tourists, it’s becoming more commonplace and a tip is always welcome.

In many hotels you have the possibility to put a tip into a staff tip box, where the tips are shared out among the employees. Of course you’re still free to give individual employees a personal tip if you want.

Taxis and guides are also happy for a tip, as are waiters at the restaurants.

How to get from the airport to your hotel

If you booked your vacation as a package deal, you generally don’t have to worry about your transfer because you’ll be picked up straight from the airport.

If you booked your hotel yourself, there are several ways to get from the airport to the hotel:

Hotel transfer service:  Most hotels offer their own transfer service. Just ask at your hotel. In our experience, hotel transfer services are always the most expensive so we never use them.

Taxi:  You can catch a taxi at the airport. Taxis in Mauritius don’t have meters, i.e. you have to negotiate the price with the driver before you leave.

Book a transfer online:  You can also always book your transfer online. We did it too, and everything went perfectly. Your driver will be there waiting for you holding up a sign and will take you directly to your hotel.

You can book a transfer here

Renting a car in Mauritius

The best way to explore Mauritius on your own is to rent a car. We did that ourselves and were absolutely satisfied.

But watch out: Traffic in Mauritius is on the left-hand side. That means the steering wheel is on the right side of the car, the gear shift is on the left, and the levers for turn signals and windshield wipers are reversed. At first, we always turned on the windshield wiper when we wanted to use the turn signal. But we got the hang of it after a while. Hehe.

If you’re not used to driving on the left-hand side, then we recommend renting a car with an automatic transmission. That way, you won’t have to worry about switching gears on the wrong side and can fully concentrate on steering the car.

Be careful in roundabouts, because you enter and leave them the other way round than you do back home. Sometimes it can also be confusing that many roundabouts are multi-lane and you have to take a different lane depending on the exit you want to take. But you get used to it quickly.

Traffic on Mauritius is generally pretty leisurely and outside the cities the roads are usually deserted. You can drive 40 kph in towns, 90 outside, and 110 on the freeway. You should stick to the speed limits because speed traps are set up all over the place.

An international driving license isn’t required for Mauritius. You can just use you driver’s license from back home.

Information and travel tips for your time there

To round off our travel tip post, we have some information for your time in Mauritius.

Eating and drinking in Mauritius

Mauritian cuisine is characterized by the influences of many immigrants. There are Chinese, Indian, and African influences. Of course, being an island, fish is one of the main items on the menu.

Curries served with fish, meat, or vegetables are typical for Mauritian cuisine. But compared to Indian and Asian curries, we didn’t like the curry dishes on Mauritius as much. But they’re not bad either.

Bread, butter, and a green chili paste are served as an appetizer. The chili paste is very tasty, but also very, very spicy. So be careful the first time you try it!

Mauritius is a sugar cane nation, which automatically also makes it a rum nation. Mauritian rum is considered to be particularly aromatic.

You can also get beer in Mauritius. The local beer brand is called Phoenix and actually doesn’t taste at all bad.

Internet in Mauritius

The Internet in Mauritius is very good. We had very good WiFi at each of our hotels.

We bought a Mauritian SIM card for mobile Internet. There are two major providers on the island: Orange and Emtel. We bought a SIM card from Emtel and paid just over 25 euros for a 25 GB package! We could only dream of that back home.

Language and understanding

The Mauritian population speaks Creole, a dialect of French. If you speak French, you should be able to get by just fine in Mauritius. Most locals also speak good English, so communication isn’t a huge problem.

The Ultimate Guide To Planning A Mauritius Holiday

Updated 13th June 2022

The warm tropical air hits you straight away like a big hug – you’ve arrived. Smiling faces welcome you, palm trees bend over slightly as if they’re trying to say hello, their fronds waving gently to you in the breeze. This is Mauritius, and you’re in for a treat.

For a small island, Mauritius’ main island seems endless. As you drive towards your hotel, the landscape constantly changes, from highway to city, to mountains, to coastline. There’s nothing like the fresh air feeling after stepping off a long-haul flight or the adrenaline of seeing a new destination for the first time, and the inspiring landscapes of Mauritius make it all the more breathtaking.

COVID-19 and travelling to Mauritius

As of June 2022, fully vaccinated travellers can enter Mauritius without quarantine. You’ll need to take a RAT upon arrival at your hotel (or a PCR at the airport if not staying in a hotel). You will also need to complete a digital declaration and have travel insurance that includes COVID-19 coverage. The Smartraveller site has more information.

How to get to Mauritius

Air Mauritius is the national carrier of Mauritius. They’re not the fanciest of airlines in terms of comfort – no Qatar or Singapore, for example. However, their fares are spectacularly well-priced in both economy and business class. When we booked, we were able to fly in Business Class Perth-Port Louis-Antananarivo in business class cheaper than we could have flown in economy on South African Airways. Air Mauritius fly several times a week from Perth.

Because of this, I’ve booked many clients to fly to Africa through Mauritius. Air Mauritius flies to Johannesburg every day except Wednesday, to Cape Town on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to Nairobi up to four times a week depending on the flight schedule, and to Dar es Salaam on Saturdays. Most flight schedules out of Australia require a stopover in Mauritius on the way over, so it’s the perfect excuse.

From Europe, Air Mauritius fly from Paris and London several times a week. Alitalia and Austrian Airlines offer seasonal services while Turkish Airlines serves the route regularly from Istanbul and Air France flies from Paris. From Asia, direct flights on Air Mauritius depart from Chengdu, Shanghai, and Hong Kong as well as several cities in India. Other airlines flying to Mauritius include Emirates, who have great connection times.

Air Mauritius offers flights to Reunion, Seychelles, and Madagascar as well as codeshares with other Indian Ocean airlines including Air Madagascar and Air Austral, making it really easy to island hop.

Where to stay in Mauritius

The first four nights of our Mauritius holiday were spent at the Radisson Blu Poste Lafayette (which is amazing). It’s now adults-only though, so if you’re planning a parents only getaway, try it! If not, I have plenty of other recommendations. Read my Ten Family-Friendly Mauritius Resorts post for ideas.

The Radisson Blu is lovely and set on a glorious beach. It’s classed as 4-star, but it’s 4.5-star for me. Huge rooms with a really comfy bed and cable and all the room amenities you need. The service is really accommodating and the food is amazing . I could have sat and eaten at the resort all day. We also booked a couples spa package (which we were given at a large discount because we were honeymooners!) and it was sublime.

I’m not going to talk too much about what happened after we moved hotels (if you need to know, click through to read more about our honeymoon nightmare ).

We were on a slight budget though so the Radisson Blu was perfect for us. It had absolutely everything we needed and more, but at a fantastic rate. However, if you’re after something truly luxe, Mauritius is the place to be. Based on client feedback, some of my favourite truly five-star options are the One&Only Le Saint Géran or the LUX* , both in Belle Mare, or for something not quite so extra but still honeymoon worthy, the Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is a wonderful option.

Another awesome option if you prefer to stay in Port Louis is Le Suffren . This five-star hotel is right on the waterfront. We stayed for two nights here at the end of our trip and, while we weren’t up to exploring a great deal because we were ill, our experience of the hotel itself was flawless.

The best time to travel to Mauritius

Mauritius has two distinct seasons – summer and winter. That said, the weather remains warm all year round.

Mauritius’ summer is November through to April, when the days are hot and can be quite sticky (average temperatures in the low 30s Celcius). January is technically cyclone season and usually I kind of ignore this type of thing… but we actually did get stuck in a Cyclone around New Years in Mauritius and it really wasn’t fun. So take this as my personal recommendation to avoid late December and the month of January.

The ‘winter’ season in Mauritius is May to October. It doesn’t get cold though; average temperatures are still in the mid-high 20s Celcius. It’s drier in the winter with plenty of sun. That said, if you’re longing to stay on the gorgeous East coast, July and August get super windy so maybe give it a miss, or book something in the West.

For me, May and September-October are the perfect sweet spot.

Things to do in Mauritius

One thing I really, really loved about Mauritius is the cosmopolitanism. I didn’t expect it to have a big, bustling city, but Port Louis is beautiful. Like a mini Paris to walk around an explore, but it has a cool harbor too (the Caudan Waterfront) and water taxis will take you across. The Waterfront features several groovy restaurants. The shopping is great if that’s your thing, but I loved walking around taking in the eclectic mix of African, French and British architecture. Port Louis has a cool Chinatown too, which adds an extra layer to the architectural and cultural delights.

You’ll find several museums, mosques, and temples to explore in Port Louis. The Mauritius Tourism Board has great list. And if you have a spare afternoon, I highly recommend the National Botanical Garden. It’s just glorious.

Grand Baie is in the North-West corner of Mauritius. Think of Grand Baie as the upmarket beach area – its Riviera region. You’ll find heaps of trendy, luxury fashion brands here as well as world-class restaurants and hip nightlife. If you want a night out to let your hair down, Grand Baie is the spot. It’s a pretty area but the beach isn’t great for swimming due to the multitude of motorised boats… But in Mauritius you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to other beach options.

If you’re heading out to eat, try Le Capitaine for fancy seafood, or La Rougaille Creole for some authentic local cajun food.

Grand Bassin

Mauritius has the highest Hindu population outside of India, and this is reflected at Grand Bassin, a huge lake in a crater where the Ganga Talao temple stands.

This intricate temple is an absolute must-see, as is the crater. At the entrance of Ganga Talao is Mangal Mahadev – a 33-metre high statue of Shiva. There are also several other temples in the complex dedicated to other Hindu deities.

prepare your travel air mauritius

In the South-West corner of Mauritius is Chamarel, a village famous for its “seven coloured earth” geopark. Here, you’ll find vivid colours in the hills formed naturally from the different mineral properties in the earth. There’s also a large dramatic waterfall roughly 100 metres in height. For the daring, abseiling down the waterfall can be arranged.

Also in the village is the Rhumerie du Chamarel, a rum distillery with connected restaurant, L’Alchimiste. Here you can sample the products neat or have them make you one of their signature cocktails. The distillery is set within a sugarcane plantation and is pretty famous for the sustainable way the products are manufactured and the byproducts reused. If you’re a nerd about this kind of thing (like me) you can read more about Rhumerie du Chamarel here.

Ile aux Cerfs sailing and parasailing

The best activity we booked was a sailing trip to Ile aux Cerfs, so I can’t go past recommending this to you. Spend a whole day cruising around on a catamaran… Think crystal waters, drinking Mauritian rum and eating a gorgeous Mauritian barbecue on board. There’s was the opportunity to get off the boat and walk around the island, or you could just float around in the water and enjoy the day. You can also take a separate boat ride up to a waterfall.

Snorkel with beautiful fish or go parasailing off a pontoon off the coast. The views are just incredible. I can honestly say our Ile aux Cerfs sailing trip was one of the best travel days I’ve ever had.

Click through to book your Ile Aux Cerfs sailing trip !

Parasailing Ile Aux Cerfs | Things To Do In Mauritius #travel

Ile aux Benitiers

Ile aux Benitiers can be found off the coast of Le Morne, in the South-West of the island. We took a private sailing trip out to Ile aux Benitiers to see the Diamond Rock (sometimes known as Crystal Rock) and laze by the water… another day spent swimming, snorkeling and eating that delicious seafood barbecue lunch Mauritians do so well. The beach is stunning and the mountains loom in the distance. You will find quite a few people on the beach trying to sell you things though.

I think we would have preferred to do this activity with a group, because we’re quite social and we had a blast with our new friends sailing to Ile aux Cerfs. The other reason for this is our guides told us “you have to eat everything on the boat!” I’m sure this was a joke but we felt so full we thought we would sink!

Sunset cruise

You’ll find providers all over Mauritius offering a sunset cruise – usually this is on a catamaran with dinner and drinks.

It depends how much sailing you like to do; for us we’ll take any possible chance to get out on a boat. If your sea legs are a bit wobbly, prioritise Ile aux Cerfs. But what is more romantic than sailing off into the sunset with a cocktail in your hand? For us, not much!

A note about dolphin swimming

We tried a dolphin swim a couple of times but inclement weather ruined one outing. On the other, it was pretty disgusting to be honest and not something I’d ever try again. Picture twenty boats chasing around one terrified dolphin and hundreds of people trying to swim with it. So I have to recommend ditching the dolphin swim and focus on all the incredible scenery you’re surrounded by.

Mauritian food

You might think an island as small as Mauritius (in size and population) wouldn’t have cultivated much of a foodie culture. You’d be dead wrong. Mauritius is one of the most incredible foodie destinations I’ve been to… and you know how I love my food.

Owing to its history, you’ll find French, Cajun, Indian and even Chinese influences in Mauritian cooking. One of my favourite aspects of Mauritius travel is the food, and how the different cultures within Mauritius shine through each dish. Fresh seafood, flavour-packed curries, and creole spices all combine to produce a cuisine unlike anything else I’ve ever tried. Any sort of fish curry was my go-to, but the street food was surprising too. You’ll find a lot on Indian street snacks such as vada (my fave!) as you walk around.

I’ve attempted to recreate several Mauritian dishes at home but I just can’t get them quite right… I think this is because some of the street food, in particular, are made from family recipes handed down through generations and not found in recipe books.

Ile aux Benitiers | The Ultimate Mauritius Travel Guide

Travel costs in Mauritius

The currency is the Mauritian Rupee, but be warned: a lot of pricing is in line with the Euro, especially in resorts and for tourist activities. This means if your currency doesn’t compare favourably (like, say, the Australian Dollar) Mauritius is going to be expensive .

ATMs are found in local shopping centres; paying by card is easy in hotels and shops, but always have cash on you for cafes (particularly ones that aren’t near the major towns) and for street stalls.

We found getting around the worst: there’s no public transport outside of Port Louis so you’ll need private taxis to get from place to place.

If you’re taking a taxi, the cost needs to be agreed upon first: there will be no meter for the fare. Be willing to walk away if the fare feels too high: you’ll absolutely be paying the tourist tax.

You could also cut costs a bit by hiring a car if you’re comfortable. Mauritians drive on the left, which is nice for those of us from the colonies! Many of my clients have done this and it’s definitely what we’ll do next time to keep the costs a bit more reasonable.

We like Europcar because they have good deals and we earn frequent flyer points. They have desks at Plaissance (Port Louis) airport, as well as in Grand Baie and Les Pailles.

You’re never far from a grocery store in Mauritius. Especially if you’re staying in a resort, it really pays to stock up on snacks and drinks at the local shops. Especially if you want to buy alcohol.

Grocery stores are well-stocked with all the items you’d find at home so if you forget your toiletries or you need more supplies you won’t experience any dramas. Costs for various items were reasonable (I paid roughly the same amount in Mauritius as back home for things like shampoo, toothpaste, razors etc).

I think this is a big tip no matter where you travel: eating at locally owned cafes and restaurants is certainly cheaper than eating at the hotel. But more than that – it’s an excellent way to experience more of the country’s culture. As I mentioned above, street food is a thing in Mauritius owing in part to its Indian heritage, and a quick snack is cheap and delicious.

Takeaway tips

Mauritius is like many of the once-in-a-lifetime paradises you dream of: it comes at a price. But with careful planning you can keep the costs manageable.

The big surprise, I think, is just how much there is to do on this little island. In fact, it can be overwhelming. So make sure to schedule in some rest days so you can relax, hit the spa, or just go with the flow and be open to anything that comes up.

Lastly, be health conscious. Mauritius is a safe and friendly place to explore but don’t drink the water, practice mosquito-avoidance procedures and check with your travel clinic about the recommended vaccinations. From experience: parasites can really ruin your Mauritius experience.

Now go forth and book that amazing Mauritius getaway! You’re going to have a blast.

Your photos look amazing and so inviting (especially the pool with the cocktail!) some great advice about travelling to Mauritius- it’s definitely a place that’s on my bucket list ?

Thanks! Yes it was beautiful (or at least the first half was amazing anyway… but what befell is after that was not Mauritius’ fault)

Looks beautiful, idyllic even!! I wanna go!

Do it Ritu!

Sounds like an amazing honeymoon. We fancied going here but it was the wrong time of year!

Ehhhh it was the wrong time for us too, we got caught in a cyclone on the way home. Not so fun. It Mauritius really turned on the charm for us before that!

Oh wow! I fear I have missed my chance to visit, this was a consideration for our honeymoon too, we eventually decided on New York (so no hardship). But unless I win the lottery it doesn’t look likely.

It really seems beautiful

Just like I fear I’ll never get to the Caribbean!

Pictures are beautiful. Enjoyed the post as knew nothing of this place. Canadian here so always aware of exchange on the dollar. Good to point that out.

Thanks Brenda! Yep, it was a shock because being from Australia I have Southeast Asia or the Pacific on my doorstep – places that are pretty cheap to travel through. So Mauritius was a whole different kettle of fish!

I love your blog

Thanks so much Sonia!

Stunning! Now that I can’t travel I so look forward to your blog…particularly on a Saturday when I can curl up and have a good read. It looks and sounds like a wonderful trip x

Oh Claire thanks so much… if you have any requests on things you’d like to read about just let me know and I’ll make it happen ?

Amazing photos and tips for anyone wanting to travel there! It’s definitely on my bucket list now ?

Thanks Janita! Hope you make it there soon!

Travel guide to Mauritius

book hotel mauritius

An islander once told Mark Twain that “ Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius”. Its miles of palm-fringed sandy beaches, almost entirely encircled by coral reefs, offer sanctuary for those who want to spend days lounging on the beach. The crystal clear waters are perfect for diving, snorkelling, swimming, kayaking and that’s just the beginning. What makes Mauritius different is that it has so much to offer beyond the beach. Whether it’s skydiving out of a plane, hiking through the mountains and National Parks or soaking up the culture, this is truly a destination with something for everyone. The islands’ Dutch, French and British legacy is reflected in colonial mansions and botanical gardens, while hospitable locals of African, Indian and Chinese heritage give the island an authentic feel, with colourful markets and temples, fusion cuisine, and the sashaying séga.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO MAURITIUS: BEST TIME TO VISIT

Mauritius benefits from a mild climate all year round with an average temperature of 25ºC (77°F) and a pleasant water temperature suitable for swimming both during summer and winter. Almost all activities you are looking forward to do during your holidays can be made at any time of the year. However, the most agreeable times to visit the island are from April to June and from September to December to avoid the peak of summer and winter, the only two seasons in Mauritius.

  • Summer  in Mauritius lasts from October to April, with sunlight from 5:30 am to 7 pm at the peak of the season. The heat peaks combined with a high degree of humidity, are felt from December to February, while periods of heavy rainfall are expected in February and March. The Indian Ocean records a cyclonic activity relatively intense each year during this season, but Mauritius, with its small size, is often spared (although there’s always a chance a storm may hit the island). Diving and deep-sea fishing enthusiasts will opt for this time to travel to Mauritius. It is also tropical fruit season, take the opportunity to taste litchis, mangoes, dragon-eye fruit and other delicious local fruits available on the market stalls.
  • Winter  in Mauritius is rather mild with an average temperature of around 22°C (71°F). The nights are cooler and the hours of sunlight range from 6:45 to 17:35 during the peak of winter. The months of July and August are the windiest for the greatest pleasure of surfers, kite surfers and windsurfers. The winter sky in the evening is wonderful in Mauritius, perfect for stargazing and watch the Perseids, the annual rendezvous of shooting star enthusiasts in August.

Mauritius also has a  microclimate  with different temperatures and climatic conditions depending on the region. The center of the island located on a high plateau, benefits from cooler temperatures and higher rainfall than the coastal zones. There may be a 3 to 5 degree difference between these regions. The North and West of the island are warmer and drier while the East is constantly under the influence of the south-eastern winds, which can be very strong in winter.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO MAURITIUS: HOW TO GET THERE

Most travelers arrive in  Mauritius via Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, the main gateway to the island destination. Several airlines now offer direct flights between Mauritius and Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia , including Air France, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Emirates, Saudi, turkish Airlines,  and Mauritius’ national proud, its flagship carrier Air Mauritius. Click  here for a continuously updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to Mauritius.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO MAURITIUS: ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Requirements for entry in Mauritius differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest Mauritian embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Mauritius. Some important points:

  • Most passport holders from the EU, Asia and USA don’t need a visa to enter Mauritius. On arrival, your passport will be stamped allowing entry to the country for 60 days. You’ll need to be able to provide evidence of onward or return travel.
  • If you are visiting Mauritius, your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required. It should have at least one blank passport page.

Make sure you read my  10 tips to plan a worry-free trip .

TRAVEL GUIDE TO MAURITIUS: GETTING AROUND

Do you want to take advantage of your holidays in Mauritius to explore the island? There are several ways to get around by car, with or without a driver, in a van or on a bike. Taxis are available outside the hotel or through the concierge, you can also opt for public transport as well.

  • If you want to discover the island by yourself at your own pace, the best thing is to rent a car, a scooter or a bicycle , depending on the distance to travel, and to bring a map or a GPS. The rental prices are quite affordable. Always keep in mind that driving is on the left-hand side in Mauritius, and the priority is given to those coming from the right. Do not hesitate to ask people on the road if you do not find your way!
  • Local tourist operators can organise excursions across the island and sea trips to the islets surrounding Mauritius; the journey will be done by bus or car depending on the number of people. Taxis also offer day packages to visit different regions, above normal trips. Taxis are found at the hotel, at the airport and on the various dedicated parking areas in towns and villages, close to the bus stations.
  • Those who want to immerse themselves in Mauritian life and make encounters, try at least once to travel by public bus . Almost all the main routes of the island are served by the different bus companies operating in Mauritius. In town, the operating hours are from 5:30 am to 8:30 pm and in rural areas from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. Before going out, check the operating hours of the buses in the region at the reception or with your host.
  • A helicopter ride will be perfect for a more special trip. Besides the tours to see Mauritius from above, the companies operating in Mauritius, Air Mauritius and Corail Helicoptères, offer the airport/hotel/airport route, provided that the resort in which you are staying has a helipad.

Thanks a lot. I am planning to visit Mauritius this year.

Thank you so much! We are going back to SA and Botswana in 2024 and want to tag Mauritius on to the end of the safari. Are there many flights (eg AF-we have miles with them) or others and how long is the flight? Which of the 5 stars would you recommend May/June timeframe with great food, snorkeling, , beaches, wildlife that won’t break the bank for the week. I saw you had a review on Lux which looked interesting. The Oberoi’s beach/ocean swimming didn’t look that inviting. Love your utube channel and follow all your trips.

I can’t wait for the amazing experiences that await us in Mauritius this year! Your travel guide was so helpful in showing us what to look forward to, and I know that our family trip is going to be truly epic. Thank you so much for all your recommendations!

NEWS ABOUT MAURITIUS

Strong demand for travel to mauritius drives significant increase in air mauritius’ global capacity. london, paris, johannesburg and reunion see increased flights..

15 October 2021

International travellers and tourists eager to make the most of the loosening of Covid-19 restrictions are returning to Air Mauritius to make their journeys as comfortable as possible. Air Mauritius, the flagship carrier of the Indian Ocean nation, is seeing a surge in bookings for the paradise island following the reopening of the country’s borders. In this context, increased flights to and from the most popular markets are planned.

To meet increasing passenger demand, Air Mauritius will operate as from 01 November 2021 one daily flight to and from Paris CDG with an Airbus A350-900 aircraft in codeshare with Air France. Simultaneously, Air France in codeshare with Air Mauritius, will also operate a daily flight from Paris CDG to Mauritius as from the same date. As from 12 November 2021, Air Mauritius will operate three weekly flights to and from London Heathrow, which will then increase to five weekly flights during the Christmas and New Year peaks from 20 December 2021 to 15 January 2022.

Continuing its close connection with Africa, Air Mauritius will operate seven weekly flights to Johannesburg with both the Airbus A350-900 and A330-900neo aircraft as from 07 November 2021. Three daily flights will operate to Reunion as from 01 November 2021 with a combination of wide-bodied and ATR72-500 aircraft.

Air Mauritius offers global connectivity with cities around the world. With the continued increase in demand and confidence from international travellers, Air Mauritius will soon be adding other routes and connections to its offering. Mauritius remains a popular destination for visitors coming from Europe, Africa and Asia in particular, seeking the unique natural beauty, cultural and culinary experiences the country has to offer.

Nilen Vencadasmy, Chairman of Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said: “The continued increase in the number of bookings on Air Mauritius highlights the confidence that domestic and international travellers have in the national airline. The decision to increase capacity was made after significant interest from countries including the UK, France and South Africa. We know that when booking a holiday, travellers take comfort in using our nation’s flagship airline, and as we approach Christmas and the New Year during our peak season, we are looking forward to welcoming visitors to Mauritius.” Ken Arian, CEO of Airport Holdings Limited, the parent company of Air Mauritius said: “Our new look fleet, following the recent refinancing of Air Mauritius, allows us to increase our flight capacity for visitors from popular destinations globally.

Air Mauritius continues to play a vital role in our country’s tourism industry, ensuring passenger flights to and from Mauritius are easily accessible and available. No efforts have been spared in the maintenance of strict health and safety protocols to provide the best experience possible, which has led to the decision to expand the number of flights over the coming season.”

From the moment passengers board an Air Mauritius flight, they experience the legendary Mauritian hospitality, as they prepare to set foot on idyllic beaches and enjoy the sunshine in Mauritius. The safety and well-being of passengers, crew and ground personnel are the topmost priority of Air Mauritius, with strict Covid-19 protocols enforced on all flights. Sanitary kits containing surgical masks and sanitary gel are offered to all travellers on international flights. Passengers can be reassured that all Air Mauritius staff and crew are fully vaccinated to ensure travellers are welcomed into a safe and secure environment on the island.

Flying nowadays is a different experience for everyone, and much emphasis has been laid on the health and safety of passengers and crew. Passengers enjoy flying more when they know they are in a safe environment and flying with Air Mauritius effectively creates a vaccination bubble for tourists as soon as they step onboard. The recent refinancing of Air Mauritius has also instilled confidence in those looking for an island getaway, knowing the airline is on a solid financial footing and is able to invest in its customer service offering, as well as new aircraft to provide the best flying experience possible.

Air Mauritius’ fleet, consisting of four Airbus A350-900s, two Airbus A330-900neos and 3 ATR72-500 aircraft is one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient widebody fleet in the world. With the strict measures in place in the interest of personal health and safety, flying with Air Mauritius remains an enjoyable and safe experience.

10 Days in Mauritius: The Ultimate Itinerary (First Time Visit)

10 days in mauritius: best things to do and see.

You’re planning a 10-day trip to Mauritius and you’re looking for the best Itinerary?

You’re at the right place!

White sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and sunshine practically all year round, Mauritius is the dream trip for those looking for relaxation and a laid-back holidays while enjoying amazing natural landscapes.

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared this recommended Itinerary for 9, 10 or 11 days in Mauritius .

During your trip, you will enjoy the most beautiful beaches, hike in the Black River Gorges National Park, go to the top of the Morne Brabant , explore Port Louis (the capital city), scuba dive in the lagoon and a lot more!

For this itinerary, in addition to the best things to do and must-see attractions , I will also give you all my best tips as well as my list of the best accommodations depending on your budget.

So, what are the best things to do in Mauritius in 10 days? Where to stay?

Let’s find out!

1) The north: Grand Baie / Cap Malheureux / Trou aux Biches (2 days)

2) the pamplemousses botanic garden / l’aventure du sucre (1 day), 3) port louis (1 day), 4) tamarin falls: the seven waterfalls trail (1 day), 5) flic-en-flac (1 day), 6) le morne brabant (2 days), 7) belle mare and île aux cerfs (1 day), 8) mahébourg and blue bay (1 day), where to stay in the north of mauritius: stages 1, 2, and 3, where to stay in the south of mauritius: stages 4, 5 and 6, where to stay in the east of mauritius: stage 7, where to stay in mahébourg: stage 8, 10-day mauritius road trip: rent a car, renting a boat in mauritius, you’re traveling in mauritius these articles will help you.

After a few hours of flight, you’ll touch down early in the morning at Mauritius International Airport, close to Mahébourg, in the southeast.

Drop off your bags at your accommodation and let’s dedicate the first two days of this 10-day Mauritius itinerary to explore the northern region of the island .

To make the most of your trip, rent a car from one of the airport agencies for easy and unrestricted movement. Rentalcars.com is the place to go to easily compare all the car rental offers in Mauritius.

The best part? You can cancel for free if you change your mind!

Not into driving? No worries! Buses are a decent option , but be warned, some trips can be a bit lengthy .

On the first day of this awesome Mauritius tour , head towards Grand Baie , one of the liveliest cities on the island. It’s a magnet for tourists and home to some seriously rich folks ! (Just check out those jaw-dropping seaside villas!)

Start your day by walking on the lovely public beach . If you take the bus, you’ll get off directly in front of the beach. A bus stop with a view of a gorgeous white sandy beach and crystal-clear turquoise water.

Quite a sight if you’re not used to such stunning scenery!

Grand Baie

How about starting your morning with a leisurely stroll along Grand Baie beach ?

Picture this: colorful boats gently swaying on the water, warm sand beneath your toes, and plenty of delightful food stalls tempting you with a variety of snacks, fruits, and mouthwatering Mauritian specialties to savor!

After your beach bliss, let’s take a stroll to Sunset Boulevard , the lively shopping street in town. In case you’re in the mood for some retail therapy!

Treat yourself to a scrumptious “roti” on the beach (a pancake stuffed with savory curries), dholl puri, or samosas. And to satisfy your sweet tooth, indulge in a pineapple carved into a flower for dessert , or have a freshly hollowed-out coconut right on the spot.

If dining at a restaurant is more your style , fret not! Grand Baie has got you covered with a wide range of options by the sea. I had a delightful lunch at Eatwithfingers (you can find it on Vingt-Pieds Road—hop on a bus or take your wheels), a super cool new restaurant serving up homemade plant-based dishes that are not only modern and delicious but also served in a super family-friendly ambiance.

After this half-day in Grand Baie, I recommend you continue discovering the northern beaches by heading now about ten kilometers from there, towards Pereybere beach . It’s a lovely little beach where it’s nice to swim, relax, and admire the sunset .

Voyage Tips - Advice On Saturdays and Sundays, the beaches can get crowded (Mauritians tend to meet up with family or friends and camp on the beach on weekends). If you want to relax in peace , it’s better to schedule beach days during the week .

For the second day of this 10-day adventure in Mauritius , we keep on rolling with dreamy beaches (because, let’s be honest, that’s why we’re all here!) and make our way to Trou aux Biches .

This charming little tourist town nestles in the northwest of the island , and its beach is one of the finest in the region . Picture this: white powdery sand, turquoise sea, swaying palm trees, and vibrant bougainvillea… A postcard-perfect paradise!

For this second sun-kissed day on the island, here’s the plan to make the most of Trou aux Biches :

  • Swimming and snorkeling to admire the local marine life
  • Trying out water sports offered by the beach hotels (diving, parasailing, water skiing, sailing…)

Trou aux Biches beach

In the afternoon , let’s change things up a bit and make our way to the northern tip of the island to check out one of my absolute favorite spots in Mauritius: the stunning beach of Cap Malheureux .

You can’t miss it! This one-of-a-kind location is absolutely unmistakable! The beach is overlooked by a bright red wooden church , which perfectly contrasts with the blue sky and sea.

Wander along the water’s edge, plonk yourself on the sand, and admire the sunset to wrap up this stunning day.

The next leg of your 10-day Mauritian road trip takes you to the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden , a lush botanical reserve created in the 18th century by a French botanist.

My suggestion for your morning: pay a visit to the garden , either with a guide or on your own, to explore a variety of tropical, local, and imported plants . You’ll come across all sorts of palms, baobabs, giant water lilies, an array of fruit trees , and aromatic plants… and be prepared to spend 1 to 2 hours exploring this fascinating garden!

Pack a picnic and lunch on the grass, by the water, or under the trees!

For the afternoon’s activity , stick around the Pamplemousses area and head to L’Aventure du Sucre, the sugar museum where you’ll get a comprehensive look at Mauritius’ history and local sugar production . “L’aventure du sucre” litteraly means the Sugar Adventure.

Don’t miss the end-of-tour tasting of various sugars , Mauritian rums, and jams. Allow 1.5 hours for a quick visit, or up to 3 hours for a detailed one.

Pamplemousses garden Mauritius

For the third leg of your 10-day holiday in Mauritius, I suggest you explore the country’s bustling capital: Port Louis .

Port Louis, teeming and lively , stands in stark contrast to the divine beaches and lush greenery of Mauritius. With scant green spaces, sometimes discordant buildings, concrete, and crowds in motion, the vibe here is quite a departure from what you’ve experienced so far.

But Port Louis is a must-visit for anyone looking to discover authentic local life and Mauritian culture .

Things to do and see in Port Louis include:

  • A quick trip to the central market on Queen Street , known as the “bazar” among the locals. It’s a buzzing city hotspot that’s not to be missed!
  • A stroll in downtown Port Louis to explore the Place d’Armes, Jardin de la Compagnie, the government palace , charming cobblestone alleys, and the few rare old Creole houses that remain.
  • A wander and shopping at Caudan Waterfront , the island’s oldest mall, shaped like a small village and built on the waterfront.
  • Visit the Blue Penny Museum (located at the entrance of Caudan, near the parking), which will immerse you in the island’s history and culture.
  • Dinner at Caudan in one of the seaside restaurants.

To discover the culinary specialties of Mauritius, I recommend you book a guided street food tour in Port Louis.

Lasting 3 hours , it allows you to visit the market and of course taste local cuisine . You’ll find all the details about this outing by clicking here:

Port Louis Caudan Waterfront

Absolutely no doubt about it, this hike is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have during your tour of Mauritius. It was one of my favorite days during my 10-day stay on the island.

The starting point for the Seven Waterfalls Trail is near Curepipe , in the center-west of the island. You have two exciting routes to choose from : the short route of the 4 cascades (half-day) or the full route of the 7 cascades (full day).

I can’t stress this enough: take a guide with you ! Even though the paths are marked (albeit very subtly), it can be quite challenging to find your way when you’re unfamiliar with the area.

You need to book this guided hike by clicking on the following button:

So, get ready for a day of walking in the heart of the tropical forest where several cascades, each more beautiful than the last, await you. Of course, you can take a dip while soaking up the sublime surrounding nature.

The 7 Waterfalls Trail

Let’s now head to the west coast of the island, specifically to the lively tourist town of Flic en Flac.

It’s the liveliest city in the west . Here, tourists and locals blend seamlessly, creating an exciting atmosphere. It also boasts a remarquable concentration of luxury hotels .

You can bask in the beauty of a stunning and expansive beach with a breathtaking view of the Morne Mountain . And when the sun sets, immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere with cozy cafes, delightful restaurants, and beachfront clubs for an evening of pure fun.

For your day in Flic-en-Flac, I suggest:

  • Enjoying the beach while lounging on the white sand or under the filaos trees
  • Observing marine life (very rich and not far from the shore!) by snorkeling in the lagoon
  • Tasting delicious and fresh snacks and fruits sold by beach vendors
  • Having dinner in one of the beachfront restaurants
  • And if you’re in the mood to groove and dance the night away, spending some time at the disco just across the beach is an absolute must!

Flic en Flac Beach

It’s time for the sixth stage of this fantastic 10-day adventure in Mauritius! Now we’re heading south to the region of Le Morne Brabant Mountain .

Le Morne Brabant is a symbolic mountain in Mauritius , emblematic of a rich and tragic history linked to the era of slavery. That’s why, at the base of Le Morne mountain, right across the beach of the same name, you’ll spot the “ Memorial of the Unknown Slave “, a tribute to the slaves who met their end on the mountain.

So, for day one in the south, how about a trek to Le Morne’s peak ? While it’s a pretty doable hike , I wouldn’t recommend it for kiddos or those who aren’t fans of heights. Some paths can get pretty steep.

Sure, you can climb it solo, but grabbing a guide or someone familiar with the terrain might be your best bet. The guides are very cool and will drop tons of knowledge about the area. Plus, they’ll help you navigate and ensure you stay safe. Set aside roughly 3 to 4 hours for the round trip.

To book this hike with a guide , simply click on the following button:

Once you’ve conquered Le Morne, you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the southern coast and the azure ocean . It genuinely took my breath away – easily one of the highlights from my 10-day Mauritius adventure.

If you’re thinking of taking the guided route, book ahead of time .

After the exhilarating hike, I, for one, chilled out at the stunning Le Morne beach right at the mountain’s foot. Do yourself a favor and do the same. It’s your postcard-perfect white sandy beach , perfect for winding down.

Le Morne Brabant Mountain

Next up, the following morning: make your way to Chamarel to see one of Mauritius’s most iconic sights: the Seven Colored Earth (just a short bus or taxi ride from Le Morne) Admission is charged, but you can grab your tickets in advance right here .

First up, you’ll come across a waterfall and yup, you can dive in if you fancy a swim. Keep going, and you’ll find yourself in front of an expansive clearing of sand dunes , displaying an impressive gradient of colors.

You might find it hard to believe it’s all-natural, but trust me, it is, and it’s drop-dead gorgeous.

On your way out, consider stopping by the Chamarel Rum Distillery to learn all about Mauritian rum.

Next on the agenda, indulge in some mind-bending fun at the “ Curious Corner “, a quirky optical illusion museum right next to the Seven Colored Earth.. It’ll take about an hour of your time.

Got some energy still bouncing around in you? Then hit the road to the Black River Gorges National Park . It’s a trekker’s paradise with plenty of hiking trails revealing the tropical forest’s heart and soul, complemented by breathtaking views.

Chamarel and the seven Coloured Earths

For day seven of your 10-day Mauritian road trip, the east coast awaits .

Wild and still pristine , the East is a trove of wonders, and an essential pitstop for a full Mauritian experience.

So, steer your way to Belle Mare with its breathtaking 10 km beach stretch . This part of the island boasts the country’s largest lagoons , making it a dream spot for snorkeling and diving.

By midday or early afternoon, set your sights on Trou d’Eau Douce beach , just a hop, skip, and a jump to the south. From there, you can hop on a boat to Île aux Cerfs .

Île aux Cerfs is a dreamy little island off the coast. Gonna lay it out straight: it’s a tourist magnet. But, oh boy, it’s worth it. The island is utterly mesmerizing ! The boat ride on the crystal-clear lagoon is an experience in itself.

You can spend a glorious half-day chilling on Île aux Cerfs , exploring, swimming, or trying out various sporty and water activities . And yes, they’ve got shops and eateries to indulge in.

ile aux cerfs

Bright and early the next morning, coast along the shoreline northwards, heading for Bras d’Eau National Park .

Spanning roughly 500 hectares, this forest reserve is the perfect recharge spot. It’s serene with few visitors , plunging you deep into nature’s embrace.

Getting there by car? Piece of cake. Just park at the entrance.

Opting for public transport? Drop off at Flacq, then grab a taxi to the park’s entrance.

I’d say, get there early to spot and hear local endemic birds like the Grey White Eye, the Woodcock, or the Kestrel. You might also bump into monkeys, bats, and wild boars.

Along your stroll, you’ll stumble upon ancient sugar mill ruins, a lime kiln , an old railway line, and several ponds.

Why not pack a picnic and enjoy it in the midst of nature’s wonders, immersing yourself in the delightful atmosphere?

Bras d'Eau National Park

As your final day in Mauritius approaches, consider heading south to conclude your journey while staying conveniently close to the airport.

You’ve been to the southwest already, so now it’s time to zip over to the southeast, to the delightful town of Mahébourg . Fun fact: this was once the capital of Mauritius . Today, it’s a quaint harbor and tourist town , oozing with laid-back vibes.

Here’s what’s popping in Mahébourg:

  • Stroll through central Mahébourg to get a taste of local life. Eye the charming Creole houses, meander through quaint alleys, and take in those oceanfront views.
  • Check out Rault’s Biscuit Factory for some scrumptious traditional Mauritian cassava biscuits. Trust me; you’ll want seconds (and thirds)!
  • Swing by the covered market for some souvenir shopping. (Your friends and fam will thank you.)

Next stop: Blue Bay , just a few kilometers down the road. Blue Bay’s a posh touristy spot with an absolutely gorgeous beach .

Your time in the Mauritian sun is ticking, so I’d say spend the rest of the day chilling on the sandy shores , taking a dip, and maybe even hopping on a glass-bottom boat tour for some underwater sightseeing.

Tickets for the boat tour are available for purchase by clicking here .

If you’ve got some time on your hands, don’t skip the boat trip to Île aux Aigrettes , a must-see bird sanctuary. You can set sail from Pointe Jérôme.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Final Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Ancillary Service Fees

Rule makes it easy to get money back for cancelled or significantly changed flights, significantly delayed checked bags, and additional services not provided

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a final rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The new rule makes it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their checked bags, or fail to provide the extra services they purchased.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”

The final rule creates certainty for consumers by defining the specific circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds. Prior to this rule, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund. As a result, refund policies differed from airline to airline, which made it difficult for passengers to know or assert their refund rights. DOT also received complaints of some airlines revising and applying less consumer-friendly refund policies during spikes in flight cancellations and changes.

Under the rule, passengers are entitled to a refund for:

  • Canceled or significantly changed flights: Passengers will be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered. For the first time, the rule defines “significant change.” Significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at different airports or flights on different planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability.
  • Significantly delayed baggage return: Passengers who file a mishandled baggage report will be entitled to a refund of their checked bag fee if it is not delivered within 12 hours of their domestic flight arriving at the gate, or 15-30 hours of their international flight arriving at the gate, depending on the length of the flight.
  • Extra services not provided: Passengers will be entitled to a refund for the fee they paid for an extra service — such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment — if an airline fails to provide this service.

DOT’s final rule also makes it simple and straightforward for passengers to receive the money they are owed. Without this rule, consumers have to navigate a patchwork of cumbersome processes to request and receive a refund — searching through airline websites to figure out how make the request, filling out extra “digital paperwork,” or at times waiting for hours on the phone. In addition, passengers would receive a travel credit or voucher by default from some airlines instead of getting their money back, so they could not use their refund to rebook on another airline when their flight was changed or cancelled without navigating a cumbersome request process.

The final rule improves the passenger experience by requiring refunds to be:

  • Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops.
  • Prompt: Airlines and ticket agents must issue refunds within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.
  • Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.
  • Full amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price, minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. The refunds must include all government-imposed taxes and fees and airline-imposed fees, regardless of whether the taxes or fees are refundable to airlines.

The final rule also requires airlines to provide prompt notifications to consumers affected by a cancelled or significantly changed flight of their right to a refund of the ticket and extra service fees, as well as any related policies.

In addition, in instances where consumers are restricted by a government or advised by a medical professional not to travel to, from, or within the United States due to a serious communicable disease, the final rule requires that airlines must provide travel credits or vouchers. Consumers may be required to provide documentary evidence to support their request. Travel vouchers or credits provided by airlines must be transferrable and valid for at least five years from the date of issuance.

The Department received a significant number of complaints against airlines and ticket agents for refusing to provide a refund or for delaying processing of refunds during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, refund complaints peaked at 87 percent of all air travel service complaints received by DOT. Refund problems continue to make up a substantial share of the complaints that DOT receives.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration

Under the Biden-Harris Administration and Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

  • Thanks to pressure from Secretary Buttigieg and DOT’s flightrights.gov dashboard, all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .
  • Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.
  • Under Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.
  • DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.
  • In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% — the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.
  • DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect against surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

  • Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, and the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.
  • Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.
  • Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity . The comment period on this proposed rule closes on May 13, 2024.

The final rule on refunds can be found at https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/latest-news and at regulations.gov , docket number DOT-OST-2022-0089. There are different implementation periods in this final rule ranging from six months for airlines to provide automatic refunds when owed to 12 months for airlines to provide transferable travel vouchers or credits when consumers are unable to travel for reasons related to a serious communicable disease.
