What to pack and where to stay: TPG's ultimate Grand Canyon family vacation guide

Tarah Chieffi

Until recently I had only seen the Grand Canyon from the sky while flying to Las Vegas to celebrate my 40th birthday last year. I've dreamed of visiting the Grand Canyon for years and getting a small taste from 30,000 feet up in the air rekindled my desire and encouraged me to finally plan a trip.

To me, the Grand Canyon is one of those classic family vacations. I never visited as a child but, in a lot of ways, it reminds me of the road trips we would take from Florida to the mountains in Georgia or North Carolina. The scenery was completely different than what I was used to, we spent most of our time outside and our daily agenda consisted of hiking and mountain-top picnics.

Related: How to plan your 1st visit to a national park

It was a chance to relax, connect and make lifelong memories, and I wanted to provide that same experience for my own children. What better place to commune with your family and with nature than the Grand Canyon?

I spent a lot of time researching our trip and learned a lot from our visit ... most importantly that this wasn't going to be a one-off trip. I picked up plenty of helpful tips along the way to help you plan the ultimate Grand Canyon family vacation.

Planning ahead

How far in advance you begin planning depends on what you plan to do at the Grand Canyon. If you are hoping to stay overnight at Phantom Ranch — the only lodging below the canyon rim — you'll need to enter a lottery up to 13 months in advance. Backcountry permit applications for overnight camping and hiking in the canyon open on the first day of the month, five months in advance of your travel dates.

While Phantom Ranch is certainly on my bucket list, my three kids are all under 10 years old and probably aren't quite ready to hike to the canyon floor. We opted to stay in one of the South Rim lodges, which allow bookings up to six months in advance. The same is true for the campgrounds situated along the North and South rims.

family tours grand canyon

There is only one lodge and one campground inside the park on the North Rim and reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance.

No matter where you plan to stay, you'll need to pay a fee to enter Grand Canyon National Park. The cost is $35 per vehicle and grants access to both the North and South rims for seven days. Lifetime and annual passes are also available.

You can buy a permit in person at one of the entrances to the park, but you'll save time by purchasing it online ahead of time. When the Grand Canyon is busy, the line of cars can be backed up an hour or more, but there is usually a designated line for prepaid permits that will help you get into the park more quickly.

If your schedule is flexible, Grand Canyon National Park participates in the National Park Service's fee-free days when entrance fees are waived for all visitors. If you visit on one of these days, you can bypass the $35 entrance fee.

What to pack

family tours grand canyon

It should go without saying that you'll want to pack lightweight, outdoorsy clothing that you don't mind getting a bit sweaty or dirty. There were a few other items that made our time at the Grand Canyon more fun and kept us more comfortable ... and a few we picked up while we were there that we didn't even know we needed.

Here's what I would recommend:

  • Refillable water bottle or hydration pack (there are a lot of bottle-filling stations around the park and in the lodges).
  • Hats, ultraviolet protection factor clothing and sunscreen for sun protection.
  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes for hiking and walking.
  • Snacks, snacks and more snacks.
  • Daypack or belt pack.
  • Small first-aid kit for scrapes, etc.
  • Flashlight for nighttime walks (the Grand Canyon is an International Dark Sky Park ).
  • A park map that details trails, bus routes, landmarks, etc.
  • Binoculars for seeing farther into the canyon and spotting animals.

Getting there

For our trip, we flew into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and rented a car to drive the 3 1/2 hours to Grand Canyon National Park.

family tours grand canyon

For most trips, I rent something practical like a minivan or three-row SUV for our family of five, but a Jeep Wrangler felt more fitting for a road trip to the Grand Canyon, so I switched things up.

Related: The 1-minute video you should take every time you rent a car

The drive was beautiful and showcased the varying terrain in Arizona, starting with the desert sands and cacti near Phoenix, leading to Arizona's mountains and forests and ending at the Grand Canyon.

PHX is the closest major airport to the Grand Canyon, making it the most popular airport for arrivals to the area. Some travelers fly into Las Vegas' Harry Reid Airport (LAS), but the drive is about an hour longer than from Phoenix.

We chose to spend two nights in Flagstaff before driving all the way to the Grand Canyon so we could explore a few sights outside of the park and devote our time at the Grand Canyon to in-the-park activities.

family tours grand canyon

We also made a last-minute decision to book a one-night stay at a hotel near the Phoenix airport so that we wouldn't have to drive from the Grand Canyon to Phoenix to catch our early morning flight. It made the trip home much smoother.

There are certain times of the year when the Grand Canyon is hotter and busier, which happen to coincide with school letting out for summer vacation. If you visit in spring or fall, you'll enjoy comfortable temperatures, less rain and fewer crowds than if you visit in July or August.

Related: Tips for visiting the busiest national parks

Most of us are at the mercy of work and school schedules, though, and those hot, busy months are often the only time available to visit. I was happy to find the park only moderately crowded during our visit and the temperatures on the rim were in the 60s at night and low 80s during the day.

family tours grand canyon

Of course, if we had hiked to the bottom of the canyon, the temperatures were about 20 degrees hotter there, which would have pushed daytime temperatures to over 100 degrees. If you are planning to hike to the bottom, that's definitely something to keep in mind.

If you are planning to visit the North Rim or want to see both the North and South rims on your trip, you'll need to also keep in mind that the North Rim is closed during the winter months.

Where to stay

In Arizona, the towns of Williams and Tusayan are located less than an hour from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and have accommodations from numerous hotel brands to choose from if you are looking to use hotel points.

Though we couldn't earn or use points from one of the major hotel brands for our stay, I would still highly recommend staying inside the Grand Canyon rather than in a nearby town. In my opinion, no amount of points can measure up to waking up and being only a short walk away from the Grand Canyon.

family tours grand canyon

That being said, some of the Grand Canyon lodges are available through credit card travel portals like the American Express Travel portal . We paid cash for our stay at the Maswik Lodge, but the property is currently available on the Amex Travel portal on select nights for around $371 or 53,084 points per night. If you book through Amex and pay cash, you can earn 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar.

Availability through Amex is spotty, but it's worth checking if you carry The Platinum Card® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card® from American Express or the American Express® Gold Card.

There are six lodges along the South Rim and one at the North Rim. Here is a little bit of information on each to help you choose where to stay:

El Tovar Hotel

El Tovar Hotel is located directly on the canyon rim. It's by far the most elegant (by national park lodge standards) and offers the best views. It's also home to the only fine dining restaurant inside the park and, unsurprisingly, the most expensive. If I were to stay here, I would spring for one of the suites with views of the Grand Canyon, but that can run upward of $700 per night. Standard rooms are available starting at around $300.

Thunderbird Lodge

Thunderbird Lodge is set back a bit from the canyon rim, but is conveniently situated along the Rim Trail, which connects to Grand Canyon Village, the popular Bright Angel Trailhead, the main visitor center, Hermits Rest and the Kaibab Trailhead. Room rates start at around $250 per night.

Kachina Lodge

family tours grand canyon

Though not as grand as El Tovar Hotel, the Kachina Lodge is also located directly on the canyon rim with access to the Rim Trail. Some rooms have partial canyon views and we saw elk and deer munching on the grass right outside of guest room windows while we were there, which is a huge selling point for me.

Maswik Lodge

family tours grand canyon

This is where we stayed and I would stay there again in a heartbeat, especially the newer Maswik South buildings that opened in April 2022. Most of the lodges have rooms that accommodate two to four guests, but our two-queen kitchenette room slept up to five. The walk to the canyon rim is about a quarter-mile, but for the updated rooms and on-site food court, it's worth the short walk. Standard room rates start at around $140 per night.

Bright Angel Lodge

When you stay at Bright Angel Lodge, you can choose between the main lodge building or the surrounding cabins for more space and privacy. Bright Angel houses the most restaurants of any of the lodges, including a burger restaurant, a steakhouse, a saloon and a shop with coffee, ice cream and grab-and-go foods. Standard room rates sometimes drop below $100 per night and cabins start around $175 per night.

Yavapai Lodge

Yavapai Lodge is located about a 1-mile walk from the South Rim, but that comes with closer proximity to the general store, bank and other amenities. The restaurant is your best bet for a hot breakfast (buffet or made to order) and the tavern serves delicious food and drinks, including locally brewed beers. Room rates start at under $200 per night and some rooms have bunk beds and sleep up to six guests.

Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge

The only lodge inside the park on Grand Canyon's North Rim, Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge offers a variety of motel rooms and cabins. All accommodations are open seasonally between mid-May and mid-October. Dining, shopping and trail access are available nearby and rates start around $160 per night.

Your kids' ages and abilities, as well as your family's interests, will largely determine how you spend your time at the Grand Canyon. These are my top recommendations based on my time there with my own family (and my wishlist for future trips):

Start at the visitor center

family tours grand canyon

There are three reasons the Grand Canyon Visitor Center is a good first stop. First, you can pick up park maps and speak to a ranger about hiking trails and other trip-planning information. Second, once your car is parked at the visitor center, you can leave it there and use the complimentary shuttle buses to get around the park. Third, just beyond the visitor center is Mather Point — one of the best spots for a first look at the canyon. You can see for miles in every direction, including Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River on the canyon floor.

Join the Junior Ranger program

family tours grand canyon

While you are at the visitor center, ask a ranger for a Junior Ranger booklet. Once you complete the activities inside (or at least make an attempt), you can turn the book in at the main visitor center, the Yavapai Geology Museum or Kolb Studio and your kids will be inducted as official Junior Rangers. My kids had to recite a pledge and then received a certificate and commemorative badge. The activities included things like writing a poem and completing a scavenger hunt.

A similar program is available at the North Rim.

Hike the (paved) Rim Trail

With young kids, I knew our time on the hiking trails would be minimal. The Rim Trail became the exception. The trail is mostly paved and flat and stretches about 13 miles, passing some of the canyon's most popular observation areas along the way. Half of our party was too tired to hike back to the car after our time on the trail, so we popped over to one of the many bus stops along the Rim Trail and rode back in comfort.

Try the Bright Angel Trail

family tours grand canyon

My oldest son is 9 and hiking the canyon rim wasn't going to cut it for him. He wanted to know what it was like to hike down into the canyon. We headed for the Bright Angel Trail, which is easily accessible from the in-park lodges. We didn't go far, but the trail goes all the way to the canyon floor if you are up for it. This is also the trail used for many mule trips, so you may see some furry friends along the route. Watch out for their droppings and remember that they have the right of way.

Visit the Yavapai Geology Museum

family tours grand canyon

Your kids might roll their eyes when you say, "Let's visit the geology museum," but it's more fun than it sounds. In addition to the interesting educational displays, the panoramic windows at the museum provide some of the best views of the canyon. The museum was built in its spot along the Rim Trail specifically to preserve the view.

Ride the bus to Hopi Point to watch the sunset

There's no bad spot to watch the sunset at the Grand Canyon, but for an unobstructed view, head to Hopi Point on the Hermit Road shuttle route. You can also hike to Hopi Point and either walk back or hop on a shuttle.

Visit the Desert View Watchtower

family tours grand canyon

It's a bit of a drive (about 30 minutes) from the South Rim lodges, but you'll be rewarded with a view that's distinct from what you'll see at Mather Point or the Rim Trail, and access to the watchtower, the Tusayan Pueblo site, a market and deli and a gift shop with art from Native American artists.

Getting around

Because it wasn't busy during our visit, driving our rental car around the park was easy and we never ran into traffic issues or lack of parking.

The South Rim shuttle bus system is extensive, with multiple routes that make frequent stops around the park. For the most part, the shuttle buses are optional, but between March and the end of November, Hermit Road is closed to cars and can only be traveled via bus. Your park map should display the bus routes and stops.

If you enjoy exploring new areas via bike, bring one along or rent one from Bright Angel Bicycles near the visitor center. There are 13 miles of roads and greenway trails designated for bicycle use along the South Rim.

Bottom line

It's difficult to put into words the way I felt when I finally saw the Grand Canyon up close and in person. Probably the most surprising thing was that even seeing it in person wasn't enough to comprehend just how vast this natural wonder of the world is.

Luckily, I have plenty of words at my disposal to help you plan a vacation to the Grand Canyon that will let you experience its majesty in the way that's best for bringing home your own family memories. And maybe even finding words worthy of describing the Grand Canyon.

1-Week Grand Canyon Itinerary For Families: A Family Road Trip Through Sedona, Las Vegas, & More

A family with a selfie stick in the Grand Canyon.

What better way to take a family adventure than with this 1-week Grand Canyon itinerary for families? The Grand Canyon is an iconic destination for families, with its famous red rock and craters. However, if you want to plan a trip here, you could also extend your time by taking a family road trip through the Southwest! This Grand Canyon itinerary for families includes the national park as part of a larger family vacation visiting Las Vegas, Sedona, and more destinations in Arizona. While many choose to visit the South Rim only, we’ve included options for both the North Rim and the South Rim, plus tips on things to do, where to stay, and more. Here’s a 1-Week Grand Canyon Itinerary For Families!

The Best Grand Canyon Itinerary For Visiting The North Rim With Kids

While many families tend to start a Grand Canyon itinerary by flying into Phoenix, if you want to make the most out of your experience and see the North Rim, our Families Who Love To Travel group members suggest that you could also fly into Las Vegas. Keep reading to find out more!

Day 1: Las Vegas (Seven Magic Mountains, Red Rock Canyon, Valley Of The Fire)

Two kids stand together looking at the Seven Magic Mountains in the desert near Las Vegas.

While Las Vegas is known for its incredible nightlife, it also offers a lot of things to do with kids. For example, if you want something that doesn’t require much energy, you can head to Seven Magic Mountains . Located about 10 miles south of downtown, it’s an art installation on public land near Las Palmas Avenue on Interstate 15 at the 215 Beltway. Created by Ugo Rondinone, the semi-circle of enormous boulders is made up of seven types of concrete cones, some reaching as high as 115 feet into the air. It’ll surely wow your kids enough to make them want to stop and take a picture!

Afternoon Activity: Red Rock Canyon

The sign for Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, with a scenic view of the red rocks in the distance.

Located about a half-hour from Las Vegas, families can also make the trip to see Red Rock Canyon . Once you arrive, there’s a small visitor’s center, where you can pick up brochures and maps for self-guided hikes. A 16-mile scenic drive takes you through the spectacular canyon with towering red stone cliffs, monoliths, and dramatic landscapes. Kid-friendly trails include the Lost Creek Trail (0.6 miles), the Children’s Discovery Loop Trail (0.8 miles), and the Red Springs Boardwalk (0.5 miles). Kids will love exploring the natural habitat of pheasants, hawks, and mule deer. You can also check out the petroglyphs near the visitor center.

Alternate Activity: Valley Of The Fire State Park

A close up of red rock at ,Valley of Fire State Park, with a desert scene expanding into the distance.

Valley of Fire State Park is one of the most visited parks in Nevada. Located around an hour from Las Vegas, the park features beautiful red sandstone rocks, including the famous “Rocks Within The Rocks.”

Though it can be a bit difficult for kids, there’s also no shortage of hiking trails here. The White Domes Trail (1.1 miles), Mouse’s Tank Trail, (0.8 miles), and the Rainbow Vista Trail (1.1 miles), all provide breathtaking views of the landscape, though they can be a bit steep at times. If you have time, explore by foot and see ancient petroglyphs from people who lived here centuries ago.

More Things To Do In Las Vegas With Kids

The fountains of Bellagio going off in front of the hotel.

Need more things to do in Vegas with kids? Visit the Fountains of Bellagio to see them illuminated. Families can also take a gondola ride at The Venetian. Plus, Vegas is famous for its live shows; some are kid-friendly, like Cirque du Soleil ! Anyone with a sweet tooth can’t miss The Sugar Factory Vegas or Coca-Cola Store; get a birds-eye view of the Las Vegas strip on the High Roller or say hello to some of your favorite marine life at the Shark Reef Aquarium . Read our list of the best things to do in Las Vegas with kids to learn more!

Where To Stay in Las Vegas With Kids

The Venetian and Palazzo offer both suites and villas, complete with a pool. There is also the Luxor Hotel & Casino, which has a family suite, but it doesn’t have a pool. Another one of the best places to stay for families is the Wynn Las Vegas , which has the largest hotel room in the world! For more information on the best hotels in Las Vegas for families, check out our list.

Day 2: Zion National Park (Emerald Pools, Riverside Walk)

A girl walking over red rocks in Zion National Park, one of the best places to visit on a Grand Canyon itinerary for families.

Zion National Park , with its majestic cliffs and serene valleys, is a good place to continue your Grand Canyon itinerary for families! Around two and a half hours from Las Vegas, it boasts a striking red-cliff landscape, natural rock arches, and a widespread Zion Canyon. Plus, it’s a particularly great location for families with young kids, given its on-site shuttle, accommodations, and light beginner trails.

Visit the Zion Canyon Visitor Center to get oriented and learn about the park’s history, geology, and wildlife. You could even grab breakfast at the Red Rock Grill in Zion Lodge. Then, hike the 3-mil e Emerald Pools Trail and you’ll come across spring-fed pools, glorious canyon views, and gushing waterfalls. After completing the hike, head back to the Zion Lodge for a picnic lunch, or grab a bite to eat at the Castle Dome Cafe. In the afternoon, take the shuttle to the Temple of Sinawava and hike the Riverside Walk , a paved trail that follows the Virgin River and offers breathtaking views of the canyon walls. If time allows, take a dip in the river to cool off before heading back!

Day 3: Zion National Park (Angels Landing, The Narrows)

Mother and daughter stand together with an expansive view of Zion National Park behind them.

Families with older children or daredevil teens can also hike Angels Landing , a thrilling 5-mile hike with a steep drop. Weeping Rock Trail is even shorter at around a mile, though nonetheless brilliant! Our contributors also recommend The Narrows hike for daredevil families willing to walk through water. Depending on your chosen path, the hike can last anywhere from 10 miles to 2 miles round trip. To see the iconic Wall Street section of the canyon, you need to hike at least 6 miles round trip, 4 of which require wading in the Virgin River surrounded by massive sandstone cliffs.

If you’d much prefer to see Zion National Park from the comfort of your car, however, The Zion Canyon Scenic Drive also showcases a driving trail with commanding views.

Where To Stay Near Zion National Park With Kids

Zion Lodge in Zion National Park, one of the best places to visit on a Grand Canyon itinerary for families.

Zion National Park has plenty of nearby accommodations for families. For maximum convenience, try staying at the Zion Lodge , as this is the only hotel in the park. We also suggest the Cable Mountain Lodge , SpringHill Suites by Marriott Springdale Zion National Park , and Cliffrose Springdale, Curio Collection by Hilton , among other options on our list of where to stay in Zion with kids.

Day 4: Page (Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell)

From Zion National Park, families can drive to Page, Arizona, which is around two hours away. Nestled near Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend – and on the way to Grand Canyon National Park, it’s the perfect place to stop for a night or two before heading on your way.

Little Girl posing on top of the Grand Canyon.

Visit the mesmerizing Antelope Canyon first. This slot canyon boasts mesmerizing rock formations and sunbeam-filled crevices, creating an otherworldly sight that captures the imagination of both adults and children alike. Antelope Canyon offers guided tours of the Upper Canyon, which last around an hour and 45 minutes. For an adrenaline rush, families can also hike to the edge of Horseshoe Bend in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, where the Colorado River runs through a horseshoe-shaped curve amidst the desert landscape.

Afternoon Activity: Lake Powell

Two girls at the bow of a boat on Lake Powell.

Next, take a scenic boat tour of Lake Powell , exploring hidden coves and towering red rock formations, providing opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and wildlife spotting. To explore by sea, families can also rent kayaks, paddleboards, or even boats, available from access points onshore.

Lounge on sandy beaches at Antelope Poin t in Arizona, or Wahweap if you’re on the Utah side. Located in Arizona’s Bullfrog Bay, Hobie and Stanton Beach are also popular with kids, featuring accessible swimming and nearby facilities. Aside from relaxing seaside, also take advantage of its endless nature walks!

Day 5: Grand Canyon National Park (North Rim)

Kid on the dads shoulder in Grand Canyon National Park.

From Page, you’ll be around two and a half hours away from Grand Canyon National Park. Since you’ll be approaching from Utah, we suggest heading toward the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Located at a higher elevation, it provides cooler temperatures and a more secluded atmosphere. It’s also less crowded than the South Rim, making it an ideal destination for families seeking a quieter experience.

Families can start their exploration of the park by taking a scenic drive along the North Rim’s main road. It has amazing views of the canyon and its surrounding landscape! To immerse yourself in nature, hike one of the many trails that wind through the area, such as the 0.5-mile Bright Angel Point Trail or the 0.8-mile Cape Royal Trail. Along the way, watch for wildlife, including deer, elk, and even the occasional California condor! For a more relaxed outing, pack a picnic and enjoy a meal at one of the North Rim’s designated picnic areas.

Use this Exciting 5-Day Sedona Itinerary For Families to plan your Sedona adventures!

Alternate/Additional Activity: South Rim

The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is more accessible and crowded than its North Rim. If you want to drive further from Page, you could access the South Rim in about an hour extra. Or, you could visit the North Rim your first day and spend your second day on the South Rim, depending on how long you want your Grand Canyon itinerary for families to be.

An expansive view of the Grand Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park.

Families love the South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Ah Point. Located on the South Rim, it’s accessible by a shuttle from the Visitor’s Center. A round-trip to Ooh Ah Point is around 1.8 miles, so even though it’s a bit steep, it should be fine for most kids. If you plan to go further, set aside at least two hours or more. For lunch, you can grab burgers at the Bright Angel Lodge. There aren’t a lot of food options inside the park, and there’s a very long line to get back in.

After lunch, hike to the Shoshone Point Trail, which isn’t marked on any maps. This easy walk provides an unbelievable view! Don’t forget to grab gelato at Grand Canyon Chocolate Factory !

Where To Stay Near The Grand Canyon With Kids

If you need somewhere to stay near Grand Canyon National Park with kids, consider El Tovar Hotel . It’s a 15-minute walk from the Grand Canyon Village, has an on-site restaurant, and offers free parking. Some other hotels on the South Rim for families include Thunderbird Lodge and the Bright Angel Lodge .

Optional Stop Between The Grand Canyon and Sedona: Bearizona

Animal in the safari at Bearizona Wildlife Park best West Coast Safaris Families

Families who want to add an extra day to their Grand Canyon itinerary can also stop at Bearizona Wildlife Park in Williams, Arizona. Encompassing a gorgeous property within Arizona’s Ponderosa Pine Forest, visitors can explore 160 acres of lush habitats belonging to North American animals.  You can even do it directly from your own car!

During this 3-mile drive, you can see black bears, white wolves, and more unique animals along the way! Deer, bison, and caribou are also often spotted, alongside the occasional hunting jaguar! Feeling ambitious? You can climb aboard the Wild Ride Bus Tour , available four times a day on a first-come, first-serve basis. Whether you choose to venture solo or with a guide, kids will love Bearizona for its playful inhabitants, always ready to put on a smile on your face.

Day 6: Sedona (ATV Tour, Cathedral Rock Overlook, Slide Rock State Park)

Two adults sit in an ATV exploring the Sedona desert.

From the Grand Canyon, families can drive two or three hours south to Sedona, the last stop on this itinerary! Famous for its red rock scenery and focus on wellness and healing, this central Arizona city is a great place to visit with outdoorsy kids of all ages.

ATVs are a popular way to get around Sedona, especially through stunning backcountry areas. T here are plenty of other rental companies to choose from, including Sedona ATV Rentals . Some offer ATVs to rent and drive, while others offer tours around Sedona. Either way, it’s a fantastic way to travel through the rugged and beautiful Red Rock Country, especially with preteens or teens. After, you can grab lunch at Golden Goose American Grill.

Or, families can also go on a Broken Arrow Pink Jeep Tour. This rugged off-roading adventure takes families down deep descents and through Sedona’s most beautiful backroads. We suggest booking a tour close to sunset for the best views!

Afternoon Activity: Slide Rock State Park

Kids climbing on rocks at Slide Rock State Park, one of the best places to visit on a Grand Canyon itinerary for families.

In the afternoon, drive around 10 minutes outside of Sedona to Slide Rock State Park. Within this natural oasis, you’ll find an 80-foot-long slide. Kids will love the slippery, fun, and wild ride down! Plus, since the swimming area is 1.5 miles long, there are many places to splash too. We suggest wearing water shoes to help grip the slippery rock bottom. Some families also bring a picnic to eat, but since we already had lunch, we didn’t.

A family of four takes a selfie in front of the sign for the Cathedral Rock, pictured in the background.

After, visit the Cathedral Rock Overlook , accessible via the Cathedral Rock Trail. This 1.2-mile hike is rated as intermediate, as there are some steeper uphill parts. Still, if you’re visiting Sedona with adventurous kids, it’ll be worth it! (Daredevil kids can even try rock scrambling!) Cathedral Rock provides some of the best views of Sedona’s red rocks, including Bell Rock. Remember: this is a popular hike and parking often fills up fast. For dinner, head to Mole Restaurant !

Day 7: Devils Bridge, Bell Rock Pathway, Airport Overlook

A view of Holy Cross at the top of the iconic red rocks of Sedona.

One of the most popular hikes in Sedona is the 3.9-mile Devils Bridge Trail in the nearby Coconino National Forest. We suggest arriving early and setting aside three hours to see everything. It’s usually crowded, especially along the stunning natural rock bridge that gives this trail its name. You can walk below it, or to satisfy your inner daredevil, you can walk on top of it!

There aren’t many casual and quick lunch spots around, but we suggest Famous Pizza.   Then, if you have the energy, rent bikes from Absolute Bikes to take along the Bell Rock Pathway . If your kids are up for a challenge, it’s beautiful and you can also hike it. Families can also hike the 0.9-mile Airport Overlook Trail to reach the Sedona Airport Overlook, one of the most scenic spots in Sedona!

Alternate Activity: Tlaquepaque Village

If you’d rather spend the afternoon relaxing, you can also check out Tlaquepaque Village . This quaint outdoor market is lovely to wander around, as cobblestone paths lead families under decorated archways. You’ll also find countless art galleries, craft shops, and other interesting boutiques to stop in.

When you’re feeling hungry, check out The Secret Garden Cafe. Located inside the northern entrance of Tlaquepaque Village , this cozy European-style bistro has healthy and delicious options. There’s even a specific kids’ menu with quesadillas, grilled cheese, mini burgers, etc.

Where To Stay In Sedona With Kids

A view of a crystal blue pool a the Enchantment Resort, with hotel buildings and the iconic red rocks in the background.

For somewhere to stay in Sedona with kids, check out the Enchantment Resort , a luxury hotel located in the heart of Boynton Canyon. Tucked in the red rock canyons, L’Auberge de Sedona offers a choice of rooms at its lodge or even more spacious cottages. We also recommend Adobe Grand Villas , Amara Resort and Spa , and Junipine Resort , among other hotels in Sedona for families.

Day 8: Fly Home From Phoenix

A young girl wearing a blue helmet holds onto her handle bars while stradeling her bike on a trail at McDowell, near Phoenix.

Spend the last day of your Grand Canyon itinerary for families in Phoenix. Since it’s one of the nearest major airports, it’s a good place to end your trip. You could visit some family-friendly attractions here too, including Camelback Mountain . If you need somewhere to stay overnight before flying back, consider the Westin Kierland or more options on our list of the best hotels in Phoenix for families!

Alternate Route For A Grand Canyon Itinerary For Families

We started this Grand Canyon itinerary for families in Las Vegas as an alternative to many other itineraries that start in Phoenix and include the South Rim. This is a great option if you’re looking to incorporate the Grand Canyon as part of a larger southwest itinerary for families, since you can add in extra cities such as Las Vegas and also see Zion National Park. However, here’s another route if you want to start in Phoenix:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Phoenix around mid-afternoon. Rent a car from the airport, then take the two-hour drive to The Wilde Resort and Spa Sedona. Take the route through Cornville and parents can stop for a drink at Page Spring Cellars.
  • Day 2: Spend this day exploring some of Sedona’s famous attractions, like the Boynton Canyon Trail or the Devils Bridge Trail.
  • Day 3: Since you’ll be in Sedona, you can also visit nearby spots like Jerome or Old Cottonwood.
  • Day 4: On day 4 of your Grand Canyon itinerary for families, head to the South Rim. You can hike the South Kebab Trail to Ooh Aah Point and then grab ice cream at Grand Canyon Chocolate Factory.
  • Day 5: From the Grand Canyon, make your way toward Page or Kanab if you want to continue your trip to spots like Antelope Canyon, Bryce National Park, or Zion National Park.

From here, you could also head back toward Sedona and extend your itinerary there. Or, spend a few extra days in Phoenix, Scottsdale, or Tuscon and fly home from there.

We had a terrific guide in Lorenzo. He clearly enjoyed his job and was very organised. He made sure to cater to all ages and explained if some of the walks in the national parks were steep or had many stairs and offered alternative routes or other parts of the park to see. Would definitely recommend this trip. We also had a great driver, Tom, who safely got us from A to B.

Did the 3-day tour and it was a great experience. This definitely was not an in-depth tour and shouldn't be perceived so prior to the tour. It was intense and schedule was tight throughout the whole 3-day tour. Wish we had more time at each place. However, the tour was perfect to give people a taste of the beauty and wonder of these landmarks. Certainly will come back for more in the future. Our tour guide Paul was very helpful and engaging. He did a great job managing the whole group as well as the busy schedule. Honestly speaking, it would be hard to find a better tour guide than Paul. Overall, a tour worth time and every penny

Grand Canyon National Park tours & vacations

Light streaming through clouds over the Grand Canyon on a sunny day, Arizona, USA

'Grand' doesn’t cut it. Mind-blowing? That’s more like it.

At 18 miles wide, 0.9 miles deep, and 277 miles long, nothing can ever prepare you for the vastness of the Grand Canyon. The views from the lookouts along the rim will take your breath away, but we like to go a little deeper — like hiking into the canyon depths and seeing the burnt-orange cliffs soar above you, falling asleep under spectacular night skies , and learning about the park's Indigenous history to connect with this ancient landscape. Make sure your camera's fully charged... you won't be able to put it down.

Grand canyon national park travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What is the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s an 18-mile wide, 0.9 miles deep, and 277 miles long gorge carved by the Colorado River over 5-6 million years. Scientists estimate that humans have lived there since the last Ice Age.

How do I get to the Grand Canyon?

The closest airports to the Grand Canyon are Las Vegas and Phoenix, but you can also fly into Flagstaff (a one-hour drive from the South Rim) or Salt Lake City (about seven hours away by car). Public transport is limited, so the best option is to drive or join us on a tour.

Getting around the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon has a free shuttle bus around the South Rim. The shuttles take you to the best viewpoints which are inaccessible to private vehicles.

There is also a Trans-Canyon-Shuttle service between the North and South Rims between May and October.

Guided bus tours also operate in the park, as well as taxi services between the South Kaibab Trailhead, Grand Canyon Village and Tusayan/Airport.

When is the best time to visit the Grand Canyon?

The best time to visit the Grand Canyon in terms of weather and avoiding huge crowds is between March and May, and September through November.

During the peak season (June-August), thousands of tourists flock to the park for the summer vacation. That being said, all hiking trails and park facilities are open, so it's the best time to experience all the park has to offer.

Temperatures drop in the winter and it snows in some areas, but it’s a great time to visit as there’s hardly anyone around and you’ll have the trails and views mostly to yourself.

What should I wear to the Grand Canyon?

No matter what season you visit the Grand Canyon, bring a sturdy pair of hiking boots or trainers with good grip, light and comfortable layers, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, a fleece, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Also, make sure you bring a reusable water bottle and plenty of snacks to refuel throughout the day.

What animals live in the Grand Canyon National Park?

Some animals you might encounter include desert bighorn sheep, deer, coyotes, mountain lions, mules, gray foxes and bears. There is also a diverse range of reptiles, amphibians and birds.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone in the Grand Canyon?

Your cell phone will probably have coverage near the park’s main tourist hubs, but there will be little or no coverage once you start hiking past the canyon rim.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

An Entertaining Ride

You know the Grand Canyon Railway is a historic ride on the rails with real, restored locomotives and vintage cars. But did you know there are musicians who roam the train playing the tunes of the West? How about that each car has a Passenger Service Attendant who will share facts about the area and the canyon and help you maximize your time while at the South Rim? And of course, there are cowboys! Each morning before the train leaves, the Cataract Creek Gang and the Marshal square off at the Williams Depot. Then later in the day, don’t be surprised if those cowboys are up to their shenanigans… They’ve been known to try a train robbery or two in their day.

The hotel features many room types and most have two queen beds to accommodate parties of all sizes. Packages are available that include nights at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel . You can also book a package that includes lodging inside Grand Canyon National Park.

Grand Canyon, Arizona: Family Travel Guide

The Grand Canyon, Arizona

What to do in the Grand Canyon

It's no much "why go" as "why would you not go?" Visible from outer space, with rock formations that pre-date dinosaurs for about a billion years, the mile-deep Grand Canyon National Park should be on every family's must-see list. With four-million-plus travelers coming each year, it's the country's most-visited national park. Most first timers with kids choose the South Rim , which is less remote than the North Rim and has more lodging options and services.

Grand Canyon South Rim: Family Travel Guide

Where to go in the Grand Canyon

Once inside the park, parents of young children may want to start with the Rim Trail , which is paved and passes many impressive lookout points. Note that there's no water on the trail, but you can fill up your bottles ahead of time in the Grand Canyon Village . The Rim Trail can also be traversed by bike and there are shuttle bus stops along the way to give hikers lots of flexibility — if kids are melting down, you can hop a bus back to the parking area. To give kids more of a taste of the wilderness, descend partway into the canyon on the beloved Bright Angel Trail , which begins with a fairly gentle grade, although it eventually reaches all the way to the bottom. There are water and rest stops along the way, and the park service suggests younger kiddos turn around after a half-mile walk, before the first switchback begins.

As an alternative to driving, the Grand Canyon Railway train leaves from the wild-west–style town of Williams, Arizona , which historic Route 66 runs though, and takes passengers to the South Rim on a two-hour trip through changing landscapes like ponderosa groves and desert plains. For the best view, it's worth upgrading to a car with dome windows and a glass roof. There's entertainment on board, including music and even a light-hearted reenacted robbery with actors playing bandits on horseback.

Family Travel Guide: Trail to Bright Angel Point, Grand Canyon

Where to stay in the Grand Canyon

To maximize your time, consider staying inside the Grand Canyon National Park. These lodges are popular, though — spots open up 13 months in advance and go quickly. Persistent types may also be to book cancellations by calling the reservations office directly. Bright Angel Lodge has a primo rimside location but choose your digs carefully and be sure to confirm yours has multiple beds (not all do) or be prepared to reserve two rooms. Many families gravitate towards Yavapai Lodge , which is one mile from the rim (there's a shuttle available) but has modern, air-conditioned rooms in its East building, some with bunk beds.

Historic Bright Angel Lodge on south rim of Grand Canyon.

Where to eat in the Grand Canyon

The El Tovar Dining Room is located in its namesake hotel, which opened in 1905 and is on the National Register for Historic Places. The menus include items that have been served for years, like prime rib hash, as well as ones with a Southwestern twist, such as beef tamales. Dinner is incredibly popular: Reservations open to hotel guests 90 days in advance and everyone else 30 days out, but breakfast and lunch are less crowded and more affordable. If your kids are lagging walking up the Bright Angel Trail, motivate them with the promise of ice cream from the Bright Angel Fountain , a scoop shop at the top near the trailhead that also serves up sweet canyon views.

Grand Canyon With Kids Travel Tips

1 day or weekend itinerary ideas.

Drive to Desert View Watchtower, ride the Hermit’s Rest route (Red shuttle) . Tip: Do it in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Hike into the Canyon : Depending on your family size, ages, and ability levels we recommend going to the visitor center for information to see which hike and how far to go, is right for you and your family/group specifically.

Ride bikes around the village and along the Arizona National scenic trail.

Camping near the Canyon Rim : Mather Campground Mather campground is located inside Grand Canyon Village. This is a great, central location for your family to sleep and make camp. There are 327 sites, each including a campfire ring, picnic table, and parking space. These hold up to six people, 3 tents, and 2 vehicles. Flush toilets and drinking water are available, as well as hot showers. No hookups for RVs.

Helicopter Tour This can be pricey, but it's definitely something that the whole family can enjoy and will remember for years to come.

Grand Canyon West Rim Skywalk is a great attraction for brave kids who want to feel like their walking over the edge of the Grand Canyon. This is the best day attraction for those visiting from Las Vegas.

Food Planning:

Because let's be honest, the kids do not care about the enormous hole in the ground unless their bellies are full. There are a variety of meal options along Grand Canyon’s rim from lodges to food trucks, but it's not like an amusement park where you'll see a concessionaire at every corner you turn; so make sure to bring enough snacks to keep your little ones from melting down when you're five shuttle stops away from the nearest snack stop. Packing snacks and having a picnic is a great way to spend some time at Grand Canyon as an activity as well. You'll burn a lot of calories hiking and walking around, so pack extra and be prepared to have a hungry family. You can also go into Tusayan or Williams to find restaurants and grocery stores.

Grand Canyon Family Vacation

“In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world. I want to ask you to keep this great wonder of nature as it now is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it.” THEODORE ROOSEVELT

Unsure about a Family Vacation tour? Check out our blog for answers to your questions about family tours.

The famous chasm carved out by the Colorado River is the headliner of this Grand Canyon family vacation but with all Northern Arizona has to offer, it is not necessarily even the highlight.

At the Grand Canyon, we’ll gaze over the rim to the depths below, looking at the millions of years of effort created by the Colorado River. We’ll then rent bicycles and ride along the South Rim’s 13 miles of paved roads and separate paths, including the Hermit Road Greenway. We’ll explore the Visitor Center and learn about the Grand Canyon’s archeology, human history, and conservation.

But Northern Arizona is a magical place filled with so much more than the Grand Canyon. Walnut Canyon National Monument. Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. The Red Rocks of Sedona. Slide Rock State Park. We’ll explore it all. And while Arizona is hot in the summer, we’ll spend our nights in the cute small town of Sedona, at Grand Canyon National Park, and in the university town of Flagstaff, higher in elevation and thus significantly cooler than in the lowlands around Phoenix.

We love this area of the world. But we especially love it for a family tour because of the incredible national parks and monuments, the educational opportunities, the beautiful vistas, the outdoor activities, and the fun places to stay. Throw in lots of pool time and a bunch of youngsters born to have fun and you have a Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon Family Vacation you will never forget.

Trip Highlights

  • The Grand Canyon - by bicycle on a closed off road!
  • Slide the natural waterslide at Slip Rock State Park
  • Hike the rim of an actual meteor crater and a separate volcanic crater
  • Sunset in the red rocks of Sedona
  • Star and planet viewing at Lowell Observatory

We meet in Phoenix at 1:30 PM, either at the airport or a downtown hotel if you arrive early. It will be hot in late June in Phoenix but we are headed north to higher elevation and lower temps. In two hours we'll be checking into our hotel in famous Sedona, land of the red rocks and (for those who believe) spiritual vortexes. We'll immediately cool off in the pool before departing for an early evening visit to Red Rocks State Park for a short hike and picnic dinner.

It will be a busy day, so we depart relatively early at 8:00 AM for the Grand Canyon. However, on the way we'll stop at Slide Rock State Park which runs along Oak Creek, the premier recreation area of Sedona. The featured activity of this park is the natural rock slide, 80 feet of slippery rock under Oak Creek. We then load up and finish the drive north to the Grand Canyon . Just looking over the rim will give you chills but we'll also rent bicycles to cycle on the closed-to-cars Hermit Road. The Grand Canyon is a destination everyone needs to see at least once.

After breakfast, we'll do the Trail of Time walk along the rim of the Grand Canyon. With rocks placed in time order along the trail, we'll learn about the geology of the canyon while viewing it from above. We'll say goodbye to the Grand Canyon and hello to another park, this one formed by a volcano, at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument . Around the year 1085, the ground erupted in a shooting geyser of flaming rock. Much of the material cooled in the air and fell as cinders, forming a 1000-foot high volcanic cone. We'll also see "lava bombs" of rock that shot out of the ground and huge lava flows that swept over the ground. How would you have liked to have been one of those early peoples living in the area at the time? We'll learn about this amazing event and take a hike up an older, smaller volcano that will give us excellent views of the region. When we are done, we'll drive back south to the fun university city of Flagstaff, one of our favorite towns in the entire west, and check into our family-friendly hotel. In the evening we'll split up, with kids doing a fun Mexican restaurant while adults enjoy something a little nicer.

After breakfast, we'll shuttle a short 20 minutes to Walnut Canyon National Monument . The Grand is not the only canyon in northern Arizona. Gashing through the rolling high plateau, Walnut Canyon is 20 miles long and hosted permanent dwellings from about the year 600. Five hundred years after that, communities built cliff dwellings within the jagged walls of the canyon, which we can still see this day 900 years later. We'll explore the history of these early inhabitants of this land on a walk into this beautiful area and then have a picnic lunch in the park. In the afternoon, we'll shuttle to Meteor Crater, "the world's best preserved meteor impact site", which was formed about 50,000 years ago with a blast equivalent to 20,000 pounds of TNT. Later that afternoon we'll again have pool time (or an optional hike). Back in town, we'll have a final dinner together at Beaver Street Brewery, one of Flagstaff's fun eateries with a nice outdoor seating area, before meeting again to tour Lowell Observatory and using their five telescopes to learn about the stars and planets - a treat for those living in cities who rarely ever see the true night sky.

We are on our way back to Phoenix and the airport. But on the way we have one final stop, at Verde Valley Archeology Center . Here we learn how archeologists do the work that creates the results we have seen in our recent explorations. Afterwards you can grab an early lunch on your own and then we'll drop you off at the airport in Phoenix by 2:00 PM for your flight home.

We meet you at 1:30 PM on Day One at the airport in Phoenix (or slightly earlier at a local hotel if you arrive the day before). We arrive back to the airport at 2:00 PM on our final day. This allows you to fly into and out of Phoenix without taking additional days of vacation.

What's Included?

  • One or two Zephyr guides accompany each trip.
  • Double occupancy lodging is included. If kids stay in your room, they get a discount of 15% off the tour price. If you are a solo adult in your family group, you may pay a single supplement to have your own room.
  • All meals except two lunches are included. Gratuity for these meals is also included.
  • All your transportation is included once you meet your guides on the first day.
  • All trail fees and permits are included.
  • NOT INCLUDED Beverages, two lunches, gratuities to your guides, personal expenses, and travel to and from the destination.

Arizona is hot in the summer. But we'll be at higher and thus cooler elevations. Flagstaff, where we spend much of our time, has a hot but manageable average daily high of 85 degrees during the time period we are there. Because we are on the high forest plateau, nighttime temperatures drop 30 degrees and are a very pleasant 53 degrees on average. July and August get afternoon monsoon rains but we should be there before these hit, likely leaving us with blue, clear skies.

Type of People Who Will Enjoy This Tour

Kids of any age are welcome but this trip is most appropriate for kids five through 18. We as guides can vouch that kids are the true experts at having fun and it makes this tour special for everyone. It takes kids about five minutes to go from unknowns to fast friends! This trip includes activities that both kids and adults will enjoy, sometimes together and sometimes separately. We know you love your little darlings, but we realize it is nice to have an occasional break for an adult drink or longer hike — our guides are more than happy to oblige you in this! We plan a couple of separate activities and dinners for kids and adults (your older teenagers can make up their minds which group they would like to join these times!). Keep in mind that our definition of family is quite liberal: traditional nuclear families, single parent households, and aunts, uncles, and grandparents are all welcome.

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience. If there is any one experience that is going to make or break your trip, please discuss this with us in advance! We will attempt to keep our website itinerary as current as possible and communicate any major changes with you in the weeks prior to the tour.

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

While the accommodations on this trip reflect the natural surroundings of the national parks and provide unparalleled access to the best activities in the area, they are simpler than is typical of Backroads lodging. Many buildings date back to the turn of the century and have only been minimally renovated, in accordance with park regulations. The Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim and the Lodge at Bryce Canyon have basic guest rooms that are not equipped with televisions or air-conditioning (nights are usually cool due to the high elevation). Overall, the service standards can seem slow and casual when compared with the hospitality found on other Backroads trips. Please note that internet and cell phone service are extremely limited throughout the parks.

The properties we use on this trip are chosen for their character and ideal location—they are not known for their food. Meals can be simple and menu options tend to lack variety. Please be aware that options for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and low-carb meals will be especially limited and substitutions are rarely available.

The National Park Service has many regulations on hiking. In Bryce Canyon National Park, your leaders can hike with you but can't act as "interpretive guides." They'll also be unable to hike with you in Grand Canyon National Park. Throughout the trip, your leaders will give an orientation to the area's flora, fauna and terrain before your hikes and rides. Thank you for helping us cooperate with each park's regulations.

About this Guide to Grand Canyon Tours from Phoenix

Inside this local guide to taking a Grand Canyon tour from Phoenix, you’ll find expert advice about:

  • The easiest way to get to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix
  • Is it worth it to drive to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix?
  • Why you should take a tour of the Grand Canyon
  • The best Grand Canyon tours from Phoenix
  • Additional resources for exploring the Grand Canyon

How to Get to the Grand Canyon From Phoenix

The Grand Canyon is directly north of Phoenix, but it’s a pretty long drive. The quickest way heads through Flagstaff and takes 3.5 hours without any traffic.

You could also detour through Sedona via Highway 89 for an extra road trip stop on the way to Flagstaff, which will add about half an hour to the drive.

Pro Tip: If you’re going to swing through Sedona, you might as well spend some time there, as a quick drive won’t be nearly enough to take it all in!

Is It Worth Driving to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix?

I’m not going to lie to you, it’s a long drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. It should be just under a 4-hour drive to the South Rim, but if you hit typical weekend traffic, it will definitely take longer.

I’ve flown into Phoenix to get to the Grand Canyon several times, but I always spend at least several days at the Grand Canyon to make the trek worthwhile.

If you want to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, it is an even longer drive of around 7 hours from Phoenix.

Although it is quite the schlep, it can be worth it if you’re seeking seclusion and stunning views, both of which you can find at Toroweap Overlook, which is one of the most underrated attractions at the Grand Canyon, in my opinion.

Local Tip : Be aware that the Grand Canyon sits at a higher elevation than Phoenix, so expect it to be much cooler when you arrive there, and be prepared with layers, especially if you’re visiting the Grand Canyon in winter .

Why It’s Worth Taking a Tour of the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is truly one of the most amazing places in the US. Seeing the stunning, sprawling vistas will be a memory you’ll never forget, and it is worth taking a tour to explore the best Grand Canyon views in this awesome landscape.

Sunset tours of the Grand Canyon are an extra special experience, with the sky catching fire over the red rock formations of the canyon.

Pro Tip: Tours are best for folks who want to learn about the history and geology of this place. It’s also a great idea for those who don’t want to drive and would instead want to enjoy the scenery.

Of course, if you’re a photographer, a tour is a great idea because you’ll get access to some unique views that you may not catch if you go on your own. But, you can definitely go it alone and enjoy spots like Hermit Road or try the Rim to Rim hike .

My pick for the #1 🏆 tour of the Grand Canyon from Phoenix is this Grand Canyon South Rim tour . Not only do you get to fly ✈️ over the widest part of the canyon, but you’ll get to do a cool Hummer tour too.

The Best Grand Canyon Tours from Phoenix

The options for Grand Canyon tours from Phoenix range from aerial tours to Hummer tours to tours that include a stop in Sedona, so you can choose how you want to explore on these tours to Grand Canyon from Phoenix.

Note: All of these Grand Canyon tours from Phoenix go to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Also determine the best time to visit the Grand Canyon before you book.

“Chris Gallagher was our tour guide. He did a phenomenal job! Knew a lot of interesting facts about the areas we traveled through and entertained us with fun stories. Gave us adequate time at each stop. Five stars for Chris!!” Deb ( read more reviews now )

You’ll also have a chance to walk around on your own and visit El Tovar Lodge and Mary Colter’s Hopi House. On your drive back to Phoenix, you’ll stop for dinner (at your own expense).

My pick for the #1 🏆 tour of the Grand Canyon from Phoenix is this Grand Canyon South Rim tour. Not only do you get to fly ✈️ over the widest part of the canyon, but you’ll get to do a cool Hummer tour too.

Antelope is the most snapped slot canyon in the southwest of the United States because of its wave-like structure, which gives the canyon a distinctive appearance. Summer is the most popular season for exploring the canyon since the weather is milder and there is less possibility of rain. Visitors from all over the world come to see its magnificent red and orange sandstone cliffs, which were eroded over many years by wind and water. Because of the canyon's unusual geometry, the sunlight reflects off its walls in fascinating patterns, producing a constantly shifting light display.

Celebrate Art At Seven Magic Mountains

A celebration of art and color , it rises more than 30 feet above the Nevada Desert and is constructed of seven enormous towers built of enormous colorful neon stones. The Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone claims that the Seven Magic Mountains reflect the blending of the man-made and the natural, as well as the passing traffic on the highway and the nearby mountains and lakes. The unique juxtaposition of the brown landscape with the bright and vibrant boulders is very interesting for tourists to observe and marvel over.

Explore Bryce Canyon And Zion National Park

Bryce Canyon, which is celebrating an entire century of wonder, is most renowned for its hoodoos, which are artistically sculpted rock spires that erosion has left intact. The greatest places to see hoodoos are along our day hiking paths, which provide a close-up and personal view of these unusual rock formations. The Bryce Canyon Amphitheater region is where you'll find the majority of the gorgeous day hikes and trailheads. In contrast, the backcountry paths of Bryce Canyon provide woods and meadows, breathtaking vistas of far-off cliffs, and isolation, but fewer hoodoos. On the other hand, Zion's distinctive collection of flora and animals will amaze you as you take in the past's rich history and the present's exhilarating experiences.
