The Case for Staying at an All-Inclusive — Solo

W hen Club Med invited me to check out its properties in the Dominican Republic, I jumped at the chance to bring my partner someplace tropical to slough off the last dregs of winter. It was going to be tricky to coordinate with his work schedule, but we had it all mapped out: We’d fly into Punta Cana, spend two nights at Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda an hour and a half up the coast, and then spend another two nights at Club Med Punta Cana before flying home.

Then, a few days after my flights were confirmed, we realized he wasn’t going to be able to join after all.

Traveling solo to an all-inclusive resort was not a square I ever expected to cross off my solo travel bingo card. I don’t have much experience with all-inclusives generally, and throughout my 20s, my solo travels graduated from stereotypical backpacking to my own brand of digital nomadism. Self-directed solo travel works for me, but the number of people I’ve met who flare up with anxiety at the thought of venturing into a foreign land alone, or talk about solo travel like it’s some great adventure they’d love to work up the courage to try one day , has made me realize that it’s not for everyone. Either that, or perhaps some solo travelers just need a gateway trip. Enter all-inclusives.

The whole idea behind all-inclusive resorts is perfect for fledging solo travelers. At comprehensive properties like the ones operated by Club Med, a wide range of food, drinks, activities, and entertainment are all hosted on-site and included in the cost of booking, leaving guests to contend with very few logistics after check-in. What’s more, all-inclusives tend to attract travelers that like to stay on the property, making it easier to meet fellow resort-goers than it is to have repeat run-ins with the average hotel guest.

Nonetheless, pulling up to Club Med Michès, I wondered if I’d feel alienated in a setting I’d long associated with couples and families. I’d cut my teeth in hostels and guesthouses in Europe and Southeast Asia where solo travelers are a dime a dozen. Even the groups I met generally subscribed to the same travel philosophies I did, including a desire to meet other travelers, and many of us loosely followed the same routes.

Yet my misgivings about Club Med’s target demographic were quickly dispelled: Perusing the Club Med app to get a lay of the first property as I settled into my room, one of the first things I saw was a reassurance that the resort was designed to welcome all types of travelers, “as a family, a couple, a group of friends, or a solo traveler.”

Why Club Meds are among the best all-inclusive resorts for solo travelers

By definition, every all-inclusive follows the same model, but what’s included varies by property. Some cover just meals and beverages; others also include activities and entertainment.

At Club Med resorts, guests can participate in a variety of recreation, from tennis, pickleball , and horseback riding to yoga, archery, and a flying trapeze, all of which are available at both the Michès and Punta Cana properties. (The larger of the two, Club Med Punta Cana has a whole circus school with offerings such as a high bungee, aerial silk, and tightrope, as well as opportunities such as golfing and scuba diving.) While private lessons can be arranged for certain activities, most are conducted in group settings on a first-to-sign-up basis, allowing guests to mingle with travelers who share similar interests.

Nightly entertainment is similarly communal. Whether it’s a themed happy hour, dance performance, dance party, or fireworks show, evenings at Club Med are anchored by revelry that spreads throughout the central areas. For older travelers such as myself, these late-night events serve as opportunities to experience the resort sans kids, which may appeal to social solo travelers.

Both of the Dominican Republic properties also have adults-only areas where guests can visit or book their accommodations, such as the Emerald Jungle in Michès, complete with Club Med’s first swim-up bar, and the Zen Oasis in Punta Cana with its Olympic-sized swimming pool and private terraces outside every room.

Yet it’s not Club Med’s amenities that make its properties some of the best all-inclusive resorts for solo travelers. It’s the brand’s ethos. Guests are known as GMs or Gentle Members; resort staff is called GOs, or Gentle Organizers. And much as guests are free to socialize among themselves, so too are GMs and GOs.

According to Maricruz Diaz Ventura, the meetings and events manager at Club Med Punta Cana, this is one of the best safeguards solo travelers have against feeling lonely at a Club Med resort — and something she greatly appreciates about working with the brand, having come from a more formal, strictly service-oriented hotel.

“When you’re having lunch or dinner, the GOs come to the table and ask if they can eat with you, so it’s easy to create relationships,” says Ventura, noting that this is also common practice among GMs because “they understand the Club Med concept.”

Later in my conversation with Ventura at the Indigo Beach Lounge, a Club Med Punta Cana regular from Ontario, Canada, approached us to rave about that very concept as if she was a paid promoter. (She wasn’t.) Shortly after, she called over her friend whom she’d introduced to the resort, which they now visit annually along with their partners, and just like that, we were a group of four chatting like old acquaintances.

My experience at Club Med’s Dominican Republic properties was not entirely social. There were times I swam in the ocean and lounged poolside alone; I got a massage, went to the gym, and even hit the buffet by myself on multiple occasions. But it was because I wanted to.

Families, couples, and solo travelers will find a Club-Med vacation package ideal for them. Although most packages are expensive, there are also packages for those looking for more budget options.

In 2014, the company was bought and is now owned by the Chinese conglomerate Fosun Group. Club Med headquarters can be found in Paris, France. It also has several owned luxury resorts and holiday locations around the globe.

ClubMed's upcoming expansions show that the resort giant continually grows its properties worldwide. Here are some of the highlights of its planned renovations, extensions, and openings through 2024:  

North America 

New resort in utah (2024).

An all-inclusive Club Med mountain resort is currently being developed in Snowbasin, Utah. The location is 35 miles from Salt Lake City and is surrounded by amazing world-class ski parks in North America. 

The resort will have 320 rooms and a design that combines American luxury and French savoir-faire. It's a resort that would be suitable for all travelers, including couples, families, and friends.  

Magna Marbella - Spain

A Club Med resort was recently opened in Magna Marbella, Spain. The resort is 45 minutes from the Malaga International Airport in the Andalusia region of Spain. 

The resort is known for its theme, which encompasses the cultural and natural richness of Southern Spain. It's a beautiful mix of old and modern—and offers travelers the best wellness and nature experience. 

Tignes - New French Alps Resort

Tignes Club Med resort is a natural paradise and home to the best winter sports in the region. It has 430 rooms, 25 exclusive suites, two restaurants, a spa, a salt wall, and a large pool. The resort also have have a complete childcare program and a ski domain.  

La Rosière Club Med, in the Tarentaise Valley is also open for reservations. It will be an "authentic" village resort best known for its ski mecca. This project is set to be a 5-star mountain resort with a total of 216 rooms that are available for booking in winter and summer. It will also offer several ClubMed services such as childcare, spa, yoga program, and gourmet dining. 

New Resort in Italian Alps (Dec 2024)

A new Club-Med resort in the Italian Alps is currently under construction. This new upcoming resort will have 200 rooms and can be found near an internationally renowned ski location. 

Tomamu - Hokkaido, Japan (2023) 

Located in the Tomamu Mountains of the Hokkaido Perfecture, the aptly named Tomamu Club Med will offer a perfect blend between powdery white escapes with premium cuisines and spirits waiting for you to discover. With the location near the Hoshino Resort, home to Japan's biggest indoor wave pool, guests will find all of endless activities and delicious dishes and beverages at the resort.

New Resort in Malaysia (2024)

Adding another resort to its numerous locations in Southeast Asia, Club Med's Malaysian resort in Borneo Kota Kinabalu is set to open in 2024. This mountain resort can be found on the island of Borneo, which is a fantastic place for experiencing the beach and jungle life. There are tons of dive sites, rainforests, and islands to explore. 

What are people saying about ClubMed?

Perfect family vacation: Almost all ClubMed resorts provide childcare for parents wanting to bring their kids on vacation. The resorts are often built with this in mind and have activities and spots specifically for kids.

Good food: There are tons of food options for everyone—constantly changing daily. The chefs are also lovely; most socialize with guests and ask about their dining experience. 

Rooms aren't maintained well: Some customers complain about smelly rooms, staff that doesn't come to clean regularly, and rooms with broken air conditioners or ventilators.

Is Club Med worth it?

There are many reasons why one may consider a solo vacation . Perhaps friends backed out at the last minute, or they had a recent breakup with their travel partner. Or maybe they’re ready to take that bucket list vacation that they’ve been dreaming of for years, but can’t quite get their friends or family on board to take the trip with them.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years as a solo traveler , it’s that one should never wait for someone else to go after their travel dreams. And sometimes, the best trips are the ones that are taken alone. Thankfully, many popular travel destinations have also taken note that the popularity of single travel is increasing. There are now a multitude of opportunities for singles to have the time of their lives.

From all-inclusive vacations and beach getaways to cruises and cross-country train rides, the opportunities are limitless when the only decision-maker on your vacation is you! Here’s our list of some of the best vacations for singles to have an unforgettable “solocation”:

1. Nassau , Bahamas

A trip to the Caribbean is always a great idea, and an even better idea for a singles vacation . With beautiful year-round weather, gorgeous white sand beaches , remarkable history and culture, water activities galore and a tropical vibe that can put any traveler at ease, Nassau , Bahamas is no doubt one of the best vacations for singles.

In addition to the beaches, there is plenty to do and see in the Bahamas to keep a solo traveler busy. During an all-girls trip back in 2010, I spent some time by myself exploring the beautiful Atlantis resort (which you can gain full access to as a guest of the Comfort Suites Paradise Island ), testing my luck at the nearby casinos and doing some shopping and exploring in the colorful downtown area.

All-inclusive resorts like Breezes Resort & Spa Bahamas  on Cable Beach make solo travel easy, affordable and stress-free. There are numerous land and water activities, live entertainment and spa packages to pamper yourself. S ingle travelers can sit and relax at the beach or one of three freshwater pools. Or, take part in activities such as rock wall climbing, beach volleyball, tennis, kayaking and surfing. With all there is to do to keep busy, you won’t feel like you’re alone at all!

And if you prefer to go by cruise, Norwegian Cruise Lines offers comfy Single Studios for one on their cruises to the Bahamas from New York . Not only will you get to explore the Bahamas , but also Orlando and Bermuda!

2. Costa Rica

If your idea of the perfect vacation for singles is somewhere relaxing where you can bask in the natural beauty of your destination, Costa Rica is a top choice. Not only is Costa Rica  considered to be among the top destinations for solo female travelers, but it is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places to take a trip as a solo traveler in general. I traveled to Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica as a single mom with my then 3 year old son in 2017 and it was by far one of the best solo experiences that I’ve had!

Aside from the delicious food, beautiful beaches , lush green forest and admiring the sloths, birds and monkeys in the trees, the “Ticos” were the highlight of my solo trip with my son. A “Tico” is a term used to refer to the natives of Costa Rica . Out of all of the people I’ve met traveling, they were by far some of the friendliest. Between the Ticos and other travelers (both solo and group travelers), I never once felt alone.

The Retreat Costa Rica in Atenas is an all-inclusive wellness resort and spa well worth considering as a solo traveler . In addition to its breathtaking land and sea views, there are numerous ways to de-stress and pamper yourself. There are yoga classes, mediation classes, spa treatments and healing practices. There are also annual events such as the Yoga Fest Zumbathon, a great way to meet new friends with like-minded interests!

Jamaica is another top Caribbean destination that makes for the ultimate tropical getaway , whether you travel alone or with others. It is also home to some of the best adults-only resorts that make vacations for singles an experience they won’t forget!

If you’re not afraid to let your inhibitions loose, the legendary adults-only Hedonism II resort in Negril may be a place to consider. This all-inclusive top-clothing optional resort is considered an “adults playground” and is ideal for singles and couples. There you will have the opportunity to meet other like-minded (and open-minded) travelers while having access to stunning beaches, themed parties, numerous land and water sports , live entertainment and gourmet dining.

When I first told my family members that I had booked a solo vacation to Cancun, Mexico , they thought that I was insane. To be honest, a small part of me thought the same! However, it turns out that Cancun was one of the best vacations for singles that I have ever taken!

Cancun’s numerous all-inclusive resorts , bustling nightlife and various excursions and activities make solo travel a breeze. Within minutes of venturing out to explore the warm waters and white-sand beaches , I had met friendly locals and other tourists who were willing to strike up a conversation and provide fun company. There were also plenty of day trips that made it easy to see popular sites while meeting other travelers. With the Chichen Itza Early Access Tour , I was able to get out and see the famous ruins before the heat really hit, and still make it back in time to enjoy the day lounging on the beach.

One of the most popular all-inclusive resorts for single travelers in Cancun is the Temptation Cancun Resort . This adults-only , topless-friendly resort is made especially for singles and couples, offering an uninhibited experience with water sports , land sports and nightly live entertainment. The staff-led activities are also led in a fun way to introduce single travelers to one another, taking away the stress and “awkward” feeling of trying to meet new people!

5. Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal in Southern Europe is considered to be one of the best vacations for singles since it is extremely easy and quick to get around and explore different areas. A train between the popular cities of Lisbon and the UNESCO -listed Porto takes less than three hours, ideal for a day trip to explore the vibrant sights and culture of both.

Sin City may not be the first place to come to mind when considering vacations for singles. However, it is by far one of the most fun places to be! I once took the opportunity to turn my work trip to Las Vegas into a weekend long vacation and let me tell you – I had the time of my life!

Vegas is known for its glitzy casinos which is no doubt a place to hang out if you’re into gambling. However, there is so much more to do and see. There is always a concert or show going on to keep you entertained. The thrilling Cirque du Soleil shows including O and KÀ are a must-see. A bonus of going solo: Since you’re traveling solo, you’ll probably have access to much better single seats! If you’re into the party scene, the pool parties during the day and the club scene at night won’t disappoint. I found being a solo traveler particularly beneficial at the most exclusive places, as the bouncers didn’t mind letting in one person versus a group of friends all trying to enter at once.

For something more low-key, stroll the Strip, do some high-end shopping or try one of the many buffets. There are also day trips to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam if you need a break from the action on the Strip.
