college tour

Juniors, Now’s the Time to Schedule Your College Visits

Juniors, it’s time for you to get started on college visits.

Whether you’re thinking about knocking out one or two or hitting a series of colleges, here is your go-to guide for setting up a college visit.

We’ll walk you through a steps to take before, during and after visits to help you find your perfect fit.

And if COVID-19 protocols are still underway, don’t miss our article about what to do when you can’t tour colleges in person .

What Can Juniors Do Right Now?

Juniors can do a lot right now, including developing a checklist and other things you can put on the family calendar.

Step 1: Start talking.

That’s right. Sit down and have a conversation with your family.

What are you thinking you want to do for college? Do you think you want to go to a large school? A small school? What fits your personality and preferences?

Start talking with adults you trust about schools that make sense for your needs.

Step 2: Brainstorm.

Have no idea where to start? Start a brainstorming session where you write down your visions about what you think your college experience might be like.

Rather than throwing a dart at a map and jumping in the car, it’s a good idea to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Do you see yourself going to a large or small school?
  • Do you want a lot of personalized attention?
  • Are you looking for a more selective institution?
  • How far away from home do you want to live?
  • When you envision college, what do you think of?

In other words, think broadly about your college visit choices, then think more narrowly about the colleges you’d like to visit.

Put a premium on relationships when you make this list.

What kind of people do you want to meet? What type of individuals do you want to learn from?

Remember, college is about way more than pretty residence halls, beautiful buildings and other aesthetic things. It’s about the people who influence you along the way.

Step 3: Research at least one college.

Choose at least one college and do as much research as you can. Learn more about that particular school’s:

  • Admission criteria
  • Results — how many students go to graduate school, get a job after graduation, etc.
  • School profile
  • Academics and selectivity: Are you looking for a serious academic environment? Would you rather go to a school that focuses on undergraduate teaching — or research?
  • Potential majors
  • Housing information
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Athletics opportunities

After you narrow down some of the “big” things, like distance from home and general experience, then you can start thinking about things like major, requirements and more.

Does this college college or university you’ve researched fit the bill? If not, look for another one. If that one makes sense, move toward school as your first visit.

Step 4: Check the calendar.

Once you’ve honed in on your first college to visit, figure out what visit day fits into your schedule. Check your calendar and your family members’ calendars too. Remember, mom and dad likely have to drive you to your visit or coordinate flights. You need to plan the visit with your parents, and you might need to make sure your brothers’ and sisters’ schedules are open too.

How to Set Up a College Visits

First of all, make sure you (the student!) call the schools where you’re interested in setting up a visit.

Your mom or dad should not make the call. It’s time to put some of those adulting skills into practice.

Step 1: Think through what you want to do on your visit.

Who are the must-see people on your radar—the soccer coach, tutoring center, a financial aid advisor? It’s OK if you’re not sure. You can work through some of these questions when you make your phone call to the admissions office.

Step 2: Call the college or university’s admissions office.

Don’t set up a visit online. Talk to an actual person.

Or, if you do set up a visit online, call and make sure the admissions office received your scheduled visit—and that it didn’t get lost in cyberspace.

Have a detailed conversation about what you’d like to do when you’re on the visit.

Step 3: Ask for a personal campus visit.

Try to steer clear of group visit days.

Naturally, you’re an individual and have specific interests and needs.

When you’re stuck on a group visit, no one student will have the same interests as you. You could get stuck touring the gym for 25 minutes of your hour-long tour (even if you’re not an athlete or hate the thought of a treadmill). Who wants that?

A personal campus visit ensures your visit is all about you and nobody else.

Step 5: Get ready!

You don’t want to start a college visit without doing some preparation. You want to know as much as possible about the college you’re visiting before you visit.

Simple. You don’t want to waste time learning stuff you already know. If you already know the basics, like the size of the college, majors available and costs, why spend time relearning stuff you already know?

Plus, it brings camaraderie with the admission staff or chemistry professors when you say, “Yeah! And that biochemistry secondary major—that sounds cool.”

You’ll never believe how much people’s eyes light up when you know something about the college or university already.

What to Do During/After Visits

When you arrive at the admissions office, go to the campus visit coordinator’s desk and introduce yourself. That individual will help you get your day started in the right direction.

While you’re on your visit, do your best to ask great questions. You want to think of questions before you visit and ask everyone questions. Get each person talking about the college or university you’re visiting. It’s best to get candid thoughts from each individual you talk to.

This may sound like a pain, but it’s a good idea to get all your thoughts together and take a minute or two to jot down all your initial reactions to the college you’ve just visited. Grab your phone and type in some notes on the card or plane ride home.

Believe it or not, it’s difficult to remember each individual school after your 10th college visit.

Now’s the Time!

Juniors, we’ve offered everything you need to know about how to schedule a college visit .

It’s a matter of sitting down with your family members or other trusted adults, pouring over Niche’s 2021 college rankings and making lists of what matters to you.

While many current college students tout the importance of being able to actually step foot onto the campus you might go to, sometimes the circumstances just do not work out.

At Niche, we know a college is more than its stats or buildings. We also know it can be hard to figure out a college’s vibe or how students feel about it from its website alone. Using our comprehensive college profiles and social media accounts, you can get a sense of what life at a college is really like. Here are three simple ways to do that.

In case you haven’t heard yet, Niche has an amazing new opportunity for high school seniors. Niche Direct Admissions is a program that allows participating colleges to accept students and offer scholarships based on their Niche Profile. That’s right — no application needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

College vista post-acute.

College Vista nurse's station and hallway

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers. If this page doesn’t solve your concerns, please call us and we’ll do our best to help you.

When are the visiting hours?

We always welcome visitors. There are no set visiting hours. Please, however, be considerate of other patients during night hours.

Is there a limit to the number of people that can visit at one time?

We suggest using the common areas of the facility to meet with your loved one. If it is not possible to visit in one of the common areas, we suggest a limit of two to three people in a resident room at one time.

Is there any private space available to use?

You may reserve the use of the dining room for any special event (birthday, holidays, meals) in advance with the Activities Department.

Can I bring my children to visit?

We encourage children to visit, however, we ask you to alert the charge nurse to anyone visiting the facility under the age of 12.

Can I bring a family pet to the facility?

We would love for your family pet to come visit. Please remember to clean up after them and take the proper safety measures at all times. All pets should also be kept on a leash. Pet shot records are required and kept on file.

How often will a physician or health professional visit?

Physicians generally see patients within 24-48 hours upon admission and once every 30 days thereafter. However, our nursing professionals are in constant contact with all of the physicians that visit the facility. Some insurance companies require that physicians visit more often. Check with our nursing staff for further information.

Can I take my loved one home for a visit?

Patients may have a leave of absence only with MD authorization, which can be arranged through nursing staff. The resident or responsible party upon arrival and departure must sign the LOA (leave of absence) book, located at the nursing stations.

Can my loved one receive mail?

Definitely. Mail is delivered to patients personally on a daily basis except for weekends and holidays.

College Vista Post-Acute Attn:                            Room No. 4681 N Eagle Rock Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90041

Is smoking permitted in the facility?

For the safety and welfare of all patients and staff, the facility is a  non-smoking facility .

My loved one has a favorite chair that I’d like to bring to the facility. Can you accommodate this?

We always want our patients to be comfortable; if space permits, small personal items from the resident’s home are always welcome.

Will I be required to do my loved ones laundry?

Bed linens, hospital gowns and towels are provided and laundered by the facility. If you would prefer to do laundry for your loved one, please inform the charge nurse/social services designee.

Is there someone who provides haircuts?

We have a beautician available Wednesday through Friday. Please contact our Social Service designee or stop by the nursing station to set up an appointment. Payment for all services is made in advance or at the Beauty Shop during appointments.

Where should I park, when I come to visit?

Parking is available in the parking lot. Please observe all posted city parking signs. Avoid parking in spaces specifically reserved for the handicapped, employees, and physicians.

Can I bring in my loved ones favorite food?

Consistent with the provision of special diets, always consult with the nursing staff before bringing food to patients. Any food kept in the resident room must be in properly sealed containers.

What articles of clothing should I bring?

We recommend approximately five changes of clothing and a pair of comfortable rubber-soled shoes. All articles should be washed, clearly labeled with the resident’s name in permanent ink, and entered into the patients’ personal inventory log in the medical chart. Other personal items should be marked or engraved for identification.

We advise that patients do not keep valuable jewelry or large amounts of cash in the facility.

  • Blouses (with front snaps)
  • Socks/Nylons
  • Walking Shoes (non-skid soles; velcro)
  • Undergarments
  • Nightgown/Pajamas
  • Sweaters (with large buttons)
  • Shirts (button down suggested)
  • Belts/Suspenders
  • Electric Razor

Personal Laundry:

There is no charge for personal laundry. Families that wish to do their loved ones’ laundry must bring in a hamper for dirty clothes and ensure laundry is done at least once a week in order to comply with state hygiene regulations.

Clothing and Laundry Tips:

All personal clothing is washed in an industrial washing machine at a temperature of 180-degrees. Make sure your loved ones’ clothing is appropriate for washing and drying in these hot temperatures. Clothing that requires cold or warm water or special care is subject to damage and fading.  All clothing must be labeled.  Please label the clothing with the resident name, NOT the room number or initials. Mark clearly and in large letters on the inside neckline or waistband. All items must be marked including socks, shoes, and other personal items.

Will my loved one have telephone access?

Private phone access is available to every resident. Unlimited local and toll free calls can be made from resident phones. An unlimited number of phone calls from any incoming area code (national or international) can be received at the resident phones.

Will my loved ones room have a television?

All resident rooms have DirecTV. If you would like to bring in your own television from home, please consult with our maintenance director to ensure proper placement according to county fire codes.

What kinds of activities are planned for the patients?

We have a vibrant atmosphere with activities that match the capabilities and needs of our residents. We also have active resident and family councils and volunteer programs. Scheduled activities include: music, fitness activities, religious meetings, outside entertainment, games, gardening, field trips/outings and volunteer involvement. If you would like to arrange something special or have suggestions and ideas for individual or group activities, please inform our activities director. We welcome and encourage involvement from family and friends.

How often will the Rehabilitation staff work with my loved one?

Our Rehabilitation staff will work with our residents 6 days a week up to 2 hours a day!

Will Medicare Part A cover my stay in the facility?

Patients must have a Medicare card that reads Hospital Insurance. They must also be admitted to the facility with a physician order within 30 days of a three consecutive night hospital stay. Generally, during the first 20 days of care, Medicare will pay 100%. For days 21-100, a $185.50 daily co-insurance rate is required. Medicare does not cover skilled nursing fees over 100 days.

Kentucky basketball has a big weekend of visits coming up

Mark Pope needs to hit this weekend out of the park.

  • Author: Andrew Stefaniak

In this story:

Mark Pope and his coaching staff are no closer to filling a roster when it comes to commits, but things are going really well in the transfer portal.

A handful of players have put Kentucky in their final lists and a lot of really good visitors are expected on campus this weekend.

Three of those visitors are Andrej Stojakovic from Stanford, Deivon Smith from Utah, and Aidan Mahaney from Saint Mary's. All three of these players would make solid additions to Kentucky's 2024-25 roster, but you have to start seeing some players commit.

Currently, former Drexel big man Amari Williams is Kentucky's only transfer portal addition, but Coach Pope seems to be doing a really good job on the trail, and I expect this to pay off this weekend.

Stojakovic recently put Kentucky in his list of final three schools including North Carolina and Cal. On the season he averaged 7.8 points per game while shooting 32.7% from three. The former McDonald's All-American will shoot much better than that in Coach Pope's system.

Smith averaged 13.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game for the Utes a year ago. He also shot 40.8% from three, making him the perfect candidate for Coach Pope's system. He can shoot and pass, which is what Kentucky needs.

Mahaney was the leading scorer for Saint Mary's, averaging 13.9 points per game. He shot 35.5% from three and is a target Big Blue Nation is very excited about.

All of these guys will be on campus, and you would love to see Coach Pope add them all to next year's roster.

2024 NFL Draft: Titans explain why they chose T'Vondre Sweat No. 38 overall despite recent DWI arrest

Tennessee's brass even took a trip to visit sweat and his family.

2023 Big 12 Championship - Oklahoma State v Texas

The Tennessee Titans added one of the biggest offensive linemen in the draft with JC Latham at No. 7 overall, and followed it up by selecting one of the biggest defensive linemen in the draft with T'Vondre Sweat out of Texas.

The 2023 Outland Trophy winner was also a unanimous All-American this past season, and was named the Defensive Big 12 Player of the Year. Sweat is a talent, but he was expected to fall down teams' draft boards due to off-field issues.

Earlier this month, Sweat was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. That same week after being released from jail, he was off to Nashville to visit with the Titans.

After making the selection, Titans general manager Ran Carthon explained to reporters why Tennessee decided to spend a top 40 pick on Sweat. He said they spent a lot of time talking about Sweat's mistake, and the Titans brass, including head coach Brian Callahan, even flew to Sweat's hometown to visit with him. Carthon said the Titans had tough conversations with Sweat and his family about the poor decision he made. Ultimately, all of their research led to the Titans feeling comfortable enough to select Sweat.

Check out all that Carthon said, here:

. @TexasFootball DT T’Vondre Sweat’s first visit after his DWI was with the @Titans . The team asked him tough questions, and also sent a big contingent to meet with Sweat in his hometown to spend time with him and his family to vet the situation to their satisfaction. pic.twitter.com/tOINGZP4fv — Jim Wyatt (@jwyattsports) April 27, 2024

In 14 games played last year, Sweat recorded 45 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks and four passes defended. He and All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons could form quite the dynamic duo on the inside. Sweat is about 360 pounds, but said on Friday he wants to get down into the 350s. If he does, Sweat believes " most likely I am going to be a Hall of Famer ."

CBS Sports NFL Draft expert Chris Trapasso graded the Sweat pick a "C-."

"Monstrous NT who finally demonstrated a glimmer of pass-rush capability with hand work as a senior. Not as good against the run or double teams as his size indicates. Probably two-down player in the NFL . Tennessee did need more size inside along the DL, but this is too early for a limited player."

NV obtains new photos and videos of the elimination of traitorous ex-MP Ilya Kyva near Moscow

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Photos and videos of the elimination of pro-Russian ex-MP Ilya Kyva in a Moscow suburb were obtained by NV from sources in Ukraine’s SBU Security Service on Dec. 11.

This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.

Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.

“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.

Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.

Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.

Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.

The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.
