  • With four international options and one domestic, travellers have a range of policies, cover levels and price points to choose from.

  • Once your claim has been received you will get a confirmation email and should hear back within 10 working days., and you should hear back within 10 working days

CommBank offers a decent range of travel insurance policies at a good price point. It has multiple options to tailor cover, so you can create a policy which matches most of your needs, including expensive items, riskier holiday activities, and pre-existing medical conditions.

However, it doesn't offer any cover for cancellations, amendments, or general expenses related to COVID-1, other than medical. Older travellers are also excluded, with an age limit of 69 - significantly lower than many other providers in the market.

How long do I have to make a travel insurance claim?

You have 60 days from your return date to submit your travel insurance claim. If you're still waiting on documentation to support your claim but worried you won't make the deadline, you can start the process and submit the additional documentation later.

Can I take out a policy with CommBank if I'm already overseas?

If you are a non-Australian resident travelling to Australia, you can take out Commbank's Inbound policy while overseas. However, Australian residents can't get travel insurance from CommBank while overseas. For other options, you can read our guide on Travel insurance for Australians already overseas .

I am 80 and would like to travel to Mauritius. Does the Commonwealth Credit Card or Visa cover me for travelling to Mauritius. I noticed that Westpac age is up to 81 for travel insurance

There are several conditions and restrictions that apply to people aged 80 or over when considering credit card insurance through CommBank. These may include no cover for overseas emergency medical expenses or assistance.

You can find the full details of what you are and are not covered for by reviewing the Product Disclosure Statement on CommBank’s website.

Is it possible to add two adult children on insurance included with eligible CBA credit cards?

Avatar

Thank you for getting in touch with finder.

Yes that is possible. As long as they are unmarried children, from 19 years of age up to and including 21 years of age, who are full-time students attending an accredited institution of higher learning in Australia and who the cardholder has/had sole or shared custody, and who are dependent upon the cardholder for their maintenance and financial support then they can be covered.

I suggest that you also check Commbank credit card travel insurance PDS or contact Commbank directly on this matter.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other enquiries.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Jeni

Thanks for your question.

Yes, the complimentary travel insurance covers cruising. But if you want to include the benefits provided in the Cruise Pack (which is detailed in the PDS I sent to your email), you will need to upgrade your policy, this is in addition, to cover provided in the Base International Travel Insurance and Activated Policy for cruising. Please contact Allianz Australia Insurance to upgrade.

One of the biggest perks of having a rewards card or travel credit card in your pocket is the potential for complimentary travel insurance .

While it’s a great freebie to have, the fine print on credit card travel insurance can really get you. There’s nothing worse than discovering mid-trip that you aren't adequately covered.

To ensure your travel insurance is activated before you head overseas, we’ve rounded up the major Australian credit card providers who offer complimentary travel cover for their credit cards , as well as how to activate the included travel insurance.

NOTE: Before signing up for a new card, always read the terms and conditions and get across what's covered. Most included travel insurance will exclude pre-existing conditions, and may not cover for additional activities like cruise cover or snow sports.

Eligible American Express Credit Cards :

  • Qantas American Express Ultimate Credit Card
  • Qantas American Express Premium Credit Card
  • American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card
  • American Express Velocity Platinum Credit Card
  • American Express Explorer Credit Card

How to activate: Your travel insurance cover starts when you:

  • Buy a return ticket from Australia.
  • INTERNATIONAL:  Pay for the full fare of that ticket with your American Express card or corresponding membership points.
  • DOMESTIC:  Spend at least $500 on accommodation or the full transport fare for domestic trips on your American Express card or with corresponding membership points.
  • You must be a resident of Australia, a current American Express card holder (or their spouse or dependent), and are 79 or younger at the time of purchase.

What prepaid travel costs count? This one is very specific - only the full fare of your return trip counts towards activating your travel insurance cover, including flights and cruises. For domestic trips, you will need to either spend the entire cost of your return fare (bus, train, flight, cruise, etc) or at least $500 in domestic accommodation costs to activate your travel insurance cover.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? This will depend on the type of card you have, as certain cards will cover your spouse and dependents under the age of 22.

Underwritten by: Insurance provided by Zurich Australian Insurance Limited through its agent Cover-More Insurance Services.

Eligible Commonwealth Bank Credit Cards:

  • Commonwealth Bank Smart Awards Credit Card
  • Commonwealth Bank Ultimate Awards Credit Card

  • Be an Australian resident and under 91 years of age at the time of departure.

What prepaid travel costs count? Your return flights or boat trip, transport, accommodation and tours DO count, but travellers cheques and foreign currency DON’T count (check T&Cs for further information). To qualify, you need to use your NAB card or card details to purchase these items – using the account linked to your debit card via BPay or PayPal won’t activate your travel insurance.

  • Spend at least $500 with your card on prepaid travel costs before you leave.

You will also need to be an Australian resident.

What prepaid travel costs count?  In the $500 you need to spend towards your trip, you can include your return tickets and prepaid accommodation costs.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes, but they need to activate their travel insurance in the same way you do. They’ll also have to be travelling with you for at least 50% of the trip.

This policy only covers the basics. You do have the option to upgrade to a more comprehensive cover for an added premium.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes! Once you are eligible, they are too, as long as they’re travelling with you for the duration of the trip.

People walk across a pink map of Europe.

Don’t forget these important rules!

Our mantra here at Mozo may as well be, “Always read the product disclosure statement ”, as this will tell you what the inclusions/exclusions are of your chosen policy.

Here are some things to keep in mind about your travel insurance policy if you activate it through your credit card:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions aren’t covered under most of these policies. If you’re travelling with a pre-existing medical condition, you might have to think about purchasing a standalone policy that suits your needs.
  • Unless it's specified (like with Amex or HSBC) you don’t NEED to pay for your return ticket with your credit card to be eligible, but it’s a good way to spend a chunk of the required amount.
  • The period of cover generally ranges from 3-6 months, but it’s important to check your particular policy.
  • Most of the time, there’s no need to tell your bank that you’re travelling - your cover is automatically applied once you meet the eligibility requirements. It might be helpful anyway, to prevent foreign charges being flagged as fraudulent!
  • For spouses or dependent children to be covered, they usually need to be travelling with the card holder for the duration of the trip. Check your policy for an exact definition of who qualifies as a dependent, because the age limit sometimes changes from policy to policy. (Otherwise, check out our guide to family travel insurance ).
  • A lot of these travel insurance policies have age limits, usually up to 80 years of age. If you or someone you’re travelling with needs seniors' coverage, take a look at our handy seniors guide.

High Performance & Complex Endorsements

The private pilot certificate opens up a world of flight, travel efficiency and/or adventure depending on the desires of the pilot. However, there are some limitiations. There are certain aircraft types that require additional training to operate safely. High Performance and Complex are two of those types. While additional training is required you'll find the training does not take a long time and it can be a lot of fun to learn new aircraft! Best of all, no check ride required!

The following table describes each type of aircraft.

Some aircraft are both high performance and complex and require both endorsements to operate.

High Performance Endorsement

The high performance endorsement will get you into aircraft like the Cessna 182. This plane travels faster and has much greater range and capabilities than a typical Cessna 172. The biggest challenge in learning a high performance plane is getting used to flying an aircraft that is moving much more quickly than you may be used to. At first it will be difficult to "stay ahead of the plane" but with some practice it will become second nature. You need to be more careful when managing power and engine cooling than you may have been in your trainer aircraft. Finally, this is typically the first exposure to an aircraft that "can go down or slow down" but can't do both. Careful planning of your descent and arrival is critical in high performance aircraft.

Earning a high performance endorsement will include learning the following:

  • Controllable pitch propeller operations and failures
  • Fuel management and aircraft performance review
  • Take off, climb, cruise and descent power management and manifold pressure settings
  • Descent and approach planning
  • Slow flight and stalls
  • Emergency descents
  • Power off approaches
  • Normal and crosswind take offs and landings

To prepare for this endorsement training read the POH for the aircraft you intend to fly from cover to cover and read the FAA Airplane Flying Handbook, Chapter 11 Transitioning to Complex Aircraft, specifically focused on the section about the Controllable Pitch Propeller. If you do not already have the Airplane Flying Handbook it can be downloaded free of charge from the FAA in PDF form here: Airplane Flying Handbook (complete document) or here: Airplane Flying Handbook Chapters 10 - 12 .

This course of training will typically take two to three flights with about an hour and a half of ground training.

Complex Endorsement

The complex endorsement will get you into aircraft with retractable gear and constant speed propellers in addition to the flaps that you are most likely already used to using. Common complex "trainer" aircraft include the Piper Arrow and Cessna Cardinal 177RG. This endorsement (and a high performance endorsement) is required to fly aircraft like the Beechcraft Bonanza. The greatest challenge with this endorsement is learning how to manage the aircraft gear in addition to the constant speed propeller. If you haven't been using a verbal pre-landing checklist like BCGUMPS or GUMPS you will by the time you complete this endorsement!

Earning a complex endorsement will include the following:

  • Preflight and post flight
  • Fuel Management and the fuel system
  • Engine start and shutdown
  • Gear Operations, Vspeeds and manual gear extension
  • Propeller Operations, Manifold Pressure Settings and Power Management
  • Slow flight and Stalls
  • Normal and Crosswind take offs and landings - Checklists and Vspeeds
  • Emergency Descents
  • Power Off Approaches
  • Short and Soft Field take offs and landings - Vspeeds and Flap Settings

To prepare for this endorsement training read the POH for the aircraft you intend to fly from cover to cover and read the FAA Airplane Flying Handbook, Chapter 11 Transitioning to Complex Aircraft. Review the entire chapter (you may skip the section on Turbocharging). If you do not already have the Airplane Flying Handbook it can be downloaded free of charge from the FAA in PDF form here: Airplane Flying Handbook (complete document) or here: Airplane Flying Handbook Chapters 10 - 12 .

Some insurance companies require a minimum of 5 hours of dual and 25 take offs and landings with an instructor before a new complex pilot can fly the aircraft solo. In addition you can expect to spend up to two hours total in ground instruction to learn the new aircraft systems. I find this a good minimum to cover everything listed above and to get managing the plane's gear ingrained into the pilot's psyche. I will do my best to make you paraniod about the landing gear to the point that you will never trust it is down without double and tripple checking it. This is on purpose to make sure you stay firmly in the group of pilots that have never had an accidental gear up landing.
