MSC Divina Cruise Review – Is It Really Worth It?

Are you looking for an honest and thoughtful cruise review of the MSC Divina? Then you are in the right spot.

The MSC Divina is a stunning, 333 meters long cruise ship that has been roaming the seas since 2012. It was christened by no one less than Sophia Loren herself – and follows the motto of timeless elegance.

Obviously, it is hard to know if the ship is perfect for your next cruise just by online pictures alone. They are rarely accurate and never show the full picture of the experience.

My husband and I have just returned from a 12-day cruise on the MSC Divina. And I am here to give you my brutally honest and unfiltered opinion.

First of all: Yes, the MSC Divina is definitely worth it. Keep on reading to find out why and who will enjoy cruising on this ship.

Let’s set sail!

⭐ (3/5 Stars)

The Embarkation process on the MSC Divina was sadly less than optimal this time. I am used to this smooth and streamlined procedure from MSC.

In our case, the previous ship in port, MSC Fantasia, did not leave the port on time. This meant, a three-hour delay in our embarkation. We weren’t given too much info and we had to wait forever in a crowded hall.

Once the ship arrived, the embarkation process luckily went a lot smoother. We quickly handed our documents at the counter (our luggage was already taken) and got our embarkation card.

Once on the ship, our cabin was already waiting for us fresh and clean. Also, our luggage was delivered to the cabin in the meantime.

⭐ (5/5 Stars)

We loved our cabin from the moment we entered. It was elegant, modern and so comfy.

The balcony was equipped with two chairs and a footrest. Inside, we had a couch with a small table, a vanity with a chair, and a TV. And of course a super fluffy king-sized bed.

There was absolutely nothing to criticize about our cabin. Our sweet steward Arjun came 2-3 times a day to make sure everything was spotless and perfect.

We also had a lovely surprise waiting for us: a bottle of champagne with strawberries dipped in chocolate. The perfect welcome for our honeymoon.

Justin and I had a Love/Hate relationship with the big buffet restaurant.

On one hand, the food was absolutely fantastic, and the view and the service were both amazing. Nothing to criticize on the MSC side. I ate Pizza Vesuvio every single day because it was so yummy.

But the buffet was always incredibly packed. It was hard to get a nice table, and people were loud and rude. This is not the fault of MSC per se, but I think they need to give people more space for lunch and breakfast especially. On sea days you had to wait sometimes to sit down for lunch.

The food was amazing. You could sample daily changing dishes, ethnic dishes, pasta, pizza, salads, and much more. And this basically 24/7. Everything was fresh and looked totally good. I can’t compliment the chefs on this ship enough.

The ship has a wide variety of indoor and outdoor pools.

At the main pool area, you can find a big pool and a couple of hot tubs. This is also where all the entertainment happens. Be prepared for some music and good vibes all day long.

In the back of the ship, you can find the big infinity pool (I loved it) and some hot tubs. This was my favorite place on the ship. There was also a less-crowded pool bar.

The indoor pool area was also pretty nice, but I only used it once on a bad weather day. Otherwise, it is a lot nicer to be outside in the sun with some music in my opinion.

Lastly, make sure to go down the water slide. It was so much fun!

⭐ (4/5 Stars)

We splurged a little and treated ourselves to a 12-day spa access package (about USD 150,00 if booked before the cruise).

The spa had a couple of saunas & steam rooms and a relaxation area as well as a tea & smoothie bar. I was a bit disappointed because there was no hot tub, but for the rest it was great.

I booked a massage, which was absolutely divine . Sadly, it was also pretty costly with EUR 150,00 for 60 minutes.

We never used the gym but it was spacious and had lots of great equipment.

My tip: book the spa access pass and the massages in advance, it is a lot more expensive on the ship!

In typical MSC fashion, dinner is served in a fine dining manner. You can choose between the first and second seating. We took the first, as we like to eat early.

We were seated with other Austrians together, so we had some nice conversation and we loved our dinners.

The food was outstanding , and the service as well. Every day you could choose between around 5 starters, main dishes, and desserts . You could also order seconds (as I did with the chocolate mousse).

You will have the same two waiters for the entire cruise, so make sure to bring a little tip at the end of the cruise if you like the service. This is not mandatory but we felt like they deserved it.

Good to know: you can also go to the buffet if you don’t like fine dining. We only missed our seating once, when an excursion ran longer.

Important : most days the dress code is casual, but bring something white (for white night) and something fancy for gala night.

Last but not least in this MSC Divina review, I want to talk about the other parts of the ship.

The ship is modern, and elegant and has a lot to offer. There is a casino (we won, yay!) and a big theater, as well as a Formula 1 simulator (we did not win there) and a 4D cinema.

There is a huge amount of bars, lounges, cafés and nightclubs. I totally lost count, but we did not manage to have a drink in all of them.

The shops are nice, but a bit overpriced in my opinion. They will have a final sale every day , so no need to rush.

The ship has 18 decks, although the highest one is exclusively for MSC Yacht Club members. There is also a sports area, but we did not go there.

the upper deck of the msc divina with lots of pools, hot tubs and sunbeds

⭐ (1/5 Stars)

The people on the ship is sadly something MSC Cruises can’t influence. But I still feel inclined to warn you about those.

We were sad to see many loud, rude, and horrible people on the ship. Since I never had it this bad on MSC ships, I can only assume that they sold the cruises at an insanely low price to get the ship full.

People pushed, shoved, screamed, and harassed the workers. They put so much food on their plates that they never finished. We were so sad to see this.

Nothing about this was upscale or luxurious, as my previous MSC cruises had been. I truly hope this was a one-off.

We absolutely loved our itinerary. It was a great mix of amazing stops and some sea days to relax. There is nothing we would change about this.

Here is our itinerary, and my rating of the ports of call:

  • Day 1: Barcelona ⭐ (5/5 Stars)
  • Day 2: At Sea
  • Day 3: Casablanca ⭐ (4,5/5 Stars)
  • Day 4: At Sea
  • Day 5: Tenerife ⭐ (5/5 Stars)

  • Day 12: Barcelona ⭐ (5/5 Stars)

Disembarkation was a bit of chaos again. We were supposed to disembark at 02:00 in the afternoon, but we already had to leave the cabins at 09:30 in the morning.

This led to masses of people clogging up the buffet and the bars. It was a super uncomfortable, long morning that I would have rather spent in my cabin or on shore, to be honest.

Luckily, the cruise card still worked so we could get cocktails.

In the end, the disembarkation was super smooth (the actual going off the ship part). We got our confiscated drone back (thanks) and happily left the ship with plenty of new memories.

MSC Divina Review – Frequently Asked Questions

We booked a Mediterranean Cruise with a small venture out on the Atlantic Ocean to the Canary Islands. The waves on the Atlantic were super high and it was a bit uncomfortable.

For first-time cruisers, I suggest booking an Eastern Mediterranean or Western Mediterranean Cruise . They are known for calm waters and easy-to-access ports.

More advanced cruisers will probably love the Caribbean Cruises that cover ports like the Dominican Republic or Aruba and Curacao . If you don’t love the sun as much, why not try Northern Europe, with cruise ports like Southampton ?

the msc divina from the back in shore next to a royal caribbean cruise ship in tenerife with stunning mountains in the background

This question is a bit tricky. In some ports (Casablanca, Tenerife, and Lanzarote) we had the perfect weather, as they are so far south (our cruise was at the end of October).

In other ports, like Genoa and Marseille it was a lot colder and rainy. All in all, I think it was a good time for a cruise, but ideally, you go a couple of weeks earlier. This way, you can avoid all the rain in the northern cruise ports a bit better.

To be honest, we could only use the balcony on certain days and it was also a bit too cold to swim sometimes. If you truly want a summer vacation, try going in September at the latest.

the pool and entertainment area on the msc divina cruise ship with a big pool and some screens in the background

The MSC Divina was first sailing in 2012. It was last refurbished in 2017. The ship was dry-docked for a while in 2021 and is in great shape.

Also, we noticed that little improvements, for example at the floors or the pool are done basically all the time (mostly at night) to keep the ship up to date.

The ship is in amazing shape and I couldn’t see any imperfections on the cruise.

Yes, I would consider the MSC Divina a big ship. It is 333 meters long and has 13 decks available for passengers.

Admittedly, it is a lot smaller than the newer vessels from MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

However, it is still big enough to have a good time without being crammed.

Yes, cruising is pretty safe. There are barely any incidents on bigger cruise ships and the crews are well trained to handle any emergency.

On land, you are responsible for your own well-being, so I suggest good travel insurance for any accidents that might occur.

Do you need travel insurance on a cruise ship? Yes, travel insurance on cruises is highly recommended. Especially during shore excursions, travel insurance could come in handy.   EKTA offers worldwide travel insurance  with 24/7 service and no hidden fees or restrictions.

Yes, I would say MSC Yacht Club is worth it. The MSC Yacht Club offers a private sundeck, a private restaurant, and other small perks.

Most importantly, you can avoid the masses that haunt the buffet. We will definitely book MSC Yacht Club on our next cruise.

balcony cabin on the msc divina with a book and a cocktail

That’s a wrap on my in-depth MSC Divina cruise review. As you’ve seen, we have loved the ship, the crew, and the ports of call. One thing that bothered us was the huge crowds of rude people on the ship.

But in the end, we managed to avoid them and had a really good time. The pool area, the restaurants, and the spa on the ship were excellent, and we especially loved our balcony cabin.

All in all, it was the perfect cruise, with less-than-perfect people. We would definitely book it again and totally recommend the MSC Divina to any cruise enthusiast.

Introduced in 2012, MSC Divina is among the largest ships in the fleet. It can host up to 4,345 passengers and 1,388 crew members. Some past cruisers noted that the disproportionate staff-to-guest ratio translated to slow service, especially in the dining rooms.

Still, MSC Divina offers plenty of activities to keep guests entertained. Standout facilities include a 4-D theater and four pool areas, including a 22,507-square-foot Aqua Park. Dining is on just as grand a scale: The ship contains eight restaurants, including a sushi eatery. On top of that, there are 12 bars and lounges.

Members of MSC Yacht Club (an exclusive amenities program) who sail on MSC Divina can receive benefits such as dedicated priority check-in and check-out, 24-hour butler service and concierge room service, complimentary access to the Thermal Suite in the MSC Aurea Spa, one free cruise change and a discount on prepaid restaurant packages as well as spa packages and treatment.

Suites in this exclusive area feature floor-to-ceiling windows. For MSC Yacht Club members, MSC Divina also includes the Sophia Loren Royal Suite on deck 16, which was designed with the help of Loren and includes a replica of her dressing table. More budget-friendly accommodations include Interior and Ocean View staterooms, which come equipped with TVs and minibars.

MSC Divina offers sailings around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

MSC Divina Cruise Ship Review

feature image for MSC Divina Ship Review

Sharing is caring!

Are you considering a cruise on the MSC Divina?  If you’ve never sailed with MSC before, you will certainly notice a few differences compared to popular American cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norweigan.  There are some benefits, such as their status match program and there are a few drawbacks, in my opinion. My husband and I were excited to give MSC a try so I could share my thoughts and experience with all of you.  As usual, the following is just my experience and my opinion.

In this review, I’ll cover 5 major components of our experience on the MSC Divina for a 3-night sailing. I will share my thoughts on our embarkation process, stateroom, dining experience, onboard activities, entertainment, and overall service.

Embarkation/Debarkation

I hate to kick off this MSC Divina cruise ship review on a negative but the embarkation process was rough, to say the least.  It can be summed up in one word – lines .  We embarked from the Port of Miami which is typically quite efficient.

However, we experienced a long winding queue to get through security.  An even longer line to get to a check-in agent, then a waiting area to board the ship.  Once the boarding groups started getting called, the groups were called rather quickly but boarding definitely seemed to be delayed.  We arrived at the port of Miami around 11:00 a.m. and it was around 1:00 p.m. when we boarded the ship.

Stateroom 9275 Aft Balcony

We had an aft-facing balcony on deck 9 which was a category B2 cabin.  While we are experienced balcony cruisers, this was the first time we had an aft-facing view and we were super excited.  For most cruisers the aft-trail of the ship is iconic and one of the most relaxing and picturesque views on the ship. The stateroom was well appointed and very clean.  Our attendant was friendly, attentive and did a fantastic job!

Check out the Youtube video tour of our room.

In general, the room felt a little narrow and space at the entrance of the room was a little tight.  The closet and drawer area was directly across from the bathroom door and right inside the entrance. We had to be careful if one of us was pulling something from the closet if the other person was exiting the bathroom, but it all worked out.

Dining on the MSC Divina

Main dining room –.

Both the food and the service were very good in the main dining room.  We had early, set time dining at the same table each night.  We were seated at a table for 6.  One evening we had the table to ourselves as our table mates had other dining plans.  The nightly recommended dishes had a European flair but each evening they offered a “classics menu” which offered the same items you will see on most cruise lines – salmon, steak, chicken and a vegetarian option. One thing we found confusing was that the posted menu outside the dining venue didn’t match what was presented at dinner.  We asked our server about the discrepancy and he politely told us that we must be mistaken.  ;-).

Once we mentally get past the germ concerns, we typically really enjoy the buffet.  We like the casual atmosphere and being able to dine at our on pace as well as have a variety of options to choose from.

Our experience on Divina was a little different.  The options seemed to be the same and there was an issue serving trays being empty and not quickly replaced.  Of course, as with any cruise, we certainly didn’t go hungry!  But, in general, it seemed as though they weren’t as adept at keeping up with a crowd.

One thing I personally enjoyed was the beverage stations.  The Divina seemed to have more tea options, as well as coffee mate, flavored creamer to add to your coffee.  The coffee mugs were also very nice and larger than available on most lines. We also really loved the pizza!  It was our favorite food item of our cruise!

cruise reviews msc divina

Specialty Dining

This is an area where we were a little disappointed.  The ship had two specialty dining venues – a sushi restaurant and a steakhouse.  You could purchase a package or one of the restaurants at a discount but there was a set, limited menu available referred to as a “Dining Experience” for that price.  Alternatively, you could purchase each item a la carte.

On the first day of our cruise, a slight discount was offered so after some thought we decided to try the steakhouse.  However, when we walked by (several times) there wasn’t anyone there to take our reservation.  We called from our room and were told we called the wrong number.  Finally, we just went to the restaurant just before dinner.  We tried to make a reservation but were told we had to book for the next night.  I asked if they were full/booked up and the staff member said no, but in order to get the “special” which was only a $9 discount, you had to book a day in advance.

My husband and I have 20+ years of marketing experience and that just didn’t sit well with us.  We simply moved on and went to the main dining room but it didn’t seem to us that they had an effective business model – turn away paying customers.  So, unfortunately, we were a bit soured on the experience and decided to stick with traditional dining for our short 3-day sailing.

Amenities on board the MSC Divina

There were several fun things on MSC Divina which were exciting and pretty unique.  Doesn’t it seem like many cruise lines are starting to add unique adventure items to ships such as go-carts, bumper cars, and escape rooms. Here are a few of the extras on this ship. Bowling – located in the sports bar.  This two-lane alley was out of order for the first two days but up and running by the final day.

cruise reviews msc divina

In addition to bowling in the sports bar, the ship had a 4D movie theatre and an F1 Simulator.  We didn’t have time to try out these two on our short sailing but we will plan to on a future sailing.  These activities are also available on other MSC ships. An interesting thing about this ship is that several of the bars were accessed through another bar.

One outdoor area we particularly enjoyed onboard was the Garden Pool. This was an adults-only area that featured a smoking deck (we stayed on the other side) a bar and a pool.  There were loungers and this was a great place for sunset or to video the aft trail and leaving port.  The “adult” only aspect was not enforced but we did see them enforce no drinks allowed in the pool.

Entertainment/Cruise Director Staff

Overall, the entertainment onboard was quite unique.  The large shows on the main stage featured talented performers.  The major difference between MSC and other cruise lines, to me, is that there is little continuity within the performance.  One evening featured a Tribute to Queen.  However, 3 songs in, there was an opera number complete with costume, then back to Queen and one number from the ’50s or ’60s.

The performers were talented, it just didn’t seem to flow well.  I believe that because the cruise line does such a nice job of welcoming all nationalities, there really isn’t any speaking during the performances and even though the songs were in English, I don’t believe it was not the performer’s native language. I had heard that the Michael Jackson review was quite good but that wasn’t offered on our short sailing.

We really enjoyed the cruise director staff.  There were a couple of staffers in particular that led trivia and dance parties that were quite friendly and engaging.  We arrived early to an entertainment venue and they approached us and chatted and made us feel very welcome.

Overall Service on MSC Divina

I would describe the service onboard MSC Divina as understated.  All of the staff members we interacted with were kind and helpful. However, unlike standard American cruise lines they didn’t seem to go out of there way to make your experience better, especially the bar staff.

The bar staff, in our experience, operated like they had a job to do and that was it.  We only saw one laughing and joking with a guest throughout our cruise.  We received better service if we sat at a table and waited for a waiter/waitress to come and take our drink order.  That was fine if we were sitting to have a drink and enjoy music but if we were just passing from one venue to the next, it seemed a bit inefficient.

I also noticed that most of the bars were closed.  Ok, now I’m starting to sound like a big drinker and that’s not the case.  It’s just an observation.  For example, trivia was held in one of their larger bars and was very well attended, but the bar in the venue was closed.  Guests had to leave the area and were directed to the one bar on that floor that was open.  Several times we noticed workers walking behind a bar to get something and a few people would jump up or pass by and try to order a drink but were told the bar was still closed.

Again, as someone with a marketing background, it seemed as though they were missing a money-making opportunity.  Additionally, as mentioned above, when we spoke with our waiter in the main dining room about the posted dinner menu being different, he politely told us we were mistaken. But, he was nice about it.  🙂

For those of you who have sailed recently on Carnival or Royal Caribbean, etc. you know all about THE SURVEY .

To be honest, I get pretty uncomfortable on that last night of a cruise.  I always pay my daily gratuities and I always give extra to our room steward, dining staff and a few bartenders who have added to our enjoyment.  But, the constant talk of ratings and surveys makes me a little uncomfortable.  I want to wear a sticker that says, I promise I’ll fill out the survey and give you a great review.

During our cruise,  there was NO mention of a survey or the option to tip additionally for exceptional service. There wasn’t an additional line for tipping on drink receipts, our room steward didn’t mention the survey, etc.  While I rather liked the peaceful last night, my husband had a different viewpoint.

He felt that because the other lines rely so heavily on the survey, the staff goes above and beyond to get in your good graces.  They want you to mention them by name in the survey, they want to earn your extra tips?  He may have a point!

I did receive a survey via email a week after our cruise.

Have you sailed on MSC Divina?  Let me know in the comments below and let me know about your experience.  Planning a trip and have a question, I’m here to help.

Itineraries

MSC Divina itinerary program is based on 7-day Caribbean cruises from Miami FL , and 7-day Western Mediterranean sailings from Civitavecchia-Rome , Naples and Barcelona . Divina operates cheap Transatlantic repositioning crossings between Europe and Florida.

In 2019, a small fleet of 3 MSC ships will offer Caribbean roundtrips from Miami Florida - Seaside , Meraviglia and Divina.

In early-June 2020, MSC announced that in 2021 Divina will be homeported in Port Canaveral Florida USA for 3- to 7-night roundtrips with departures on Thursdays and Sundays. Port Canaveral is the cruise port to Orlando City - one of the country's most popular travel destinations and also considered Walt Disney's "capital city".

  • Divina's Maiden Voyage from the new MSC homeport departed on September 16, 2021. This was also the ship's first commercial voyage following the pause due to the Coronavirus crisis.
  • The itineraries (3-4-7-day in length) visit call ports in The Bahamas ( Nassau , MSC Ocean Cay ) and Mexico ( Cozumel , Costa Maya ).
  • Divina's 2021 homeporting in Port Canaveral was between Sept 16 - Nov 21, followed by homeporting in Miami.
  • The next Port Canaveral season was scheduled for 2022 (starting on April 8).
  • The voyages can be combined into B2Bs/back-to-back cruises with lengths 10-11-14-days.

Everything you need to know about MSC Cruises cabins and suites

A relative newcomer in the North American market, MSC Cruises is equal parts elegant and kitschy. The line tends to appeal to a wide swath of cruisers, from Europeans who like to party into the wee hours of the morning to American families who book because of affordable fares and "kids sail free" pricing.

To satisfy its diverse passenger base, MSC offers accommodations to fit all types of travelers. Rooms include inexpensive inside cabins that sleep two people, midlevel staterooms with windows and balconies, and high-end suites that offer cruisers with larger budgets a private oasis in the form of the MSC Yacht Club .

A variety of connecting rooms and cabins with extra bunks accommodate larger groups and families who wish to share space.

Because your cruise cabin will be your home away from home for several days, it's important to book one that fits your needs. That's especially true if you're sharing it with several people.

Whether you're looking at an inside cabin for a cruise with friends, balcony accommodations for you and your significant other or a suite for your family, here TPG breaks down what you can expect when you book a room on one of MSC's ships.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

MSC Cruises cabin primer

MSC Cruises has become one of the fastest-growing lines in the cruise industry, with about two dozen ships in its fleet. The vessels fall into six classes : Lirica, Musica, Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World.

Although cabin offerings can vary from ship to ship and class to class, the standard types remain the same: inside, outside, balcony and suite.

Additionally, you'll find the same basic amenities in each room, unless otherwise noted below. They include two twin beds that can be joined to form a queen- or king-size bed; an in-cabin bathroom with a shower, a sink, a toilet and basic soap, shower gel and shampoo; a couple of nightstands; a chair or sofa; a desk/vanity; a closet; a safe; a hair dryer; a minifridge; a phone; USB outlets and a selection of both North American and European outlets.

On all ships except MSC Lirica, MSC Opera, MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia, you'll also find an interactive TV that allows you to view the daily schedule, check your onboard account and choose from a selection of live TV programs and movies.

Twice-daily room tidying is provided by a room steward assigned to each cabin, and room service is available throughout the day for an added fee.

One confusing aspect of MSC's bookings is that you'll have to select an experience package in addition to a cabin type. Package tiers determine things like your ability to choose a specific cabin and preferred dining time and whether you'll receive welcome amenities in your room. Certain cabin types are only available in conjunction with certain package experiences and vice versa. Those are noted in each respective section below.

Accessible cabins , including accommodations for wheelchair users, are available on every ship in MSC's fleet. In addition to more space, they feature wider doorways and lowered sinks and toilets in the bathrooms, as well as grab bars.

MSC Cruises' experience packages

Here's what you get when you book each of MSC's three experience packages, which determine the perks you'll receive on your sailing.

  • Accommodations
  • Complimentary food in the dining room and buffet
  • Broadway-style theater entertainment
  • Access to the onboard gym, pool and kids club
  • MSC Voyagers Club points
  • One for-fee change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Drink package discount at time of booking
  • All Bella perks
  • Choice of specific cabin and location
  • One free change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Ability to choose between early and late seating for dinner
  • Room service (complimentary for breakfast, but fees apply for other meals)
  • Discount on pre-cruise specialty dining package
  • All Fantastica and Bella perks
  • Flexible My Choice dining, which lets you eat at any time you choose between set hours
  • Free 24-hour room service delivery
  • Pillow menu
  • A welcome package, including Prosecco and chocolates
  • Complimentary access to your ship's solarium and thermal area
  • A 10% discount on all spa treatments purchased on board
  • Special Balinese massage offer when booked pre-cruise
  • Complimentary use of bathrobe and slippers
  • Priority boarding and luggage drop-off

Inside cabins on MSC Cruises ships

Inside cabins — rooms with no windows — are available on all ships in the MSC fleet. Ranging from 140 to 301 square feet (depending on the ship), they make for great sleeping because they're so dark. They're also ideal for passengers who are on a budget.

In addition to the standard amenities mentioned above, they provide room for anywhere from two to four passengers to sleep. (Rooms that sleep more than two feature bunks that pull down from the ceiling.)

These cabins are available with the line's Bella and Fantastica experiences.

If you're sailing solo, some MSC vessels offer cabins for one outfitted with a twin bed that converts into a couch. These interior studio accommodations are only available with the Bella package on MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima and the line's World Class ships.

Ocean-view cabins on MSC Cruises ships

Ocean-view rooms are similar to insides in that they provide basic amenities — but with a view.

Offering 129 to 269 square feet of space (depending on the specific ship and ocean-view category), these staterooms allow you to see outside through a porthole or a window that doesn't open.

MSC's outside cabins are available to passengers who book Bella and Fantastica packages.

Additionally, if you're traveling with your family or another group, several of MSC Cruises' ships — particularly those in the Meraviglia and Seaside classes — feature space for as many as 10 passengers via a series of connecting rooms. Options are available at the ocean-view and balcony levels.

Balcony cabins on MSC Cruises ships

You might be surprised to discover that most of MSC Cruises' balcony cabins provide less interior square footage than what's available in inside or ocean-view staterooms.

Balcony rooms run anywhere from 129 to 205 square feet, but their key feature is, of course, a private balcony, which does add an extra 32 to 129 square feet, depending on the vessel and specific type of balcony room booked. These cabins are bookable in conjunction with MSC's Bella, Fantastica and Aurea experiences.

Although balcony cabins offer upgraded amenities, including MSC's brand of hand lotion and toiletries, they are largely the same as inside and ocean-view accommodations.

MSC's newest ships — including those in the Meraviglia, Seaside and World Classes — house connecting balcony rooms that can sleep up to 10 in the same group traveling together.

Additionally, on its World Class ships, the line has introduced inward-facing balconies, similar to the ones Royal Caribbean pioneered in 2009 with the debut of its Oasis Class vessels . On World Europa, for example, they overlook the ship's promenade, offering views of the activity below, rather than the ocean.

MSC Cruises suites

All ships in MSC's fleet have suites that can be booked as part of the Fantastica and Aurea packages, but it's Aurea that offers the largest number of perks, as outlined above.

The several types of suites vary by ship in terms of size and amenities. Some come with balconies, while others only offer floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows.

Junior Suites

Although this room type is listed as a suite, it's essentially a balcony cabin with a bit more space — 183 square feet of interior accommodation with a balcony that ranges from 140 to 183 square feet.

Standard suites include rooms with huge balconies larger than the cabin's interior space and ones with private whirlpool tubs. They run from 269 to 355 square feet, with balconies measuring 32 to 409 square feet.

Grand Suites

Coming in between 377 and 420 square feet, with balconies spanning from 32 to 495 square feet, Grand Suites — found on Seaside and World Class ships — come in two types. They include standard one-bedroom Grand Suites, as well as two-bedroom varieties.

The latter has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and another with two twins. It sleeps up to five passengers and offers two bathrooms — one with a shower and the other with a bathtub.

While most suites are designed for double occupancy, some suite accommodations on MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Magnifica can sleep up to five people.

MSC Yacht Club suites on MSC ships

All cabins located in the MSC Yacht Club — an exclusive, gated area on select ships — are called suites, even the smallest and least expensive, which don't have windows or balconies.

Yacht Club suite types range from insides to two-deck duplexes, all of which come with butler and concierge services, luxuriously appointed furnishings (such as real marble finishes, memory foam mattresses and Egyptian cotton sheets) and access to members-only restaurants, bars (alcohol is free there), lounges, pools and sun decks.

The Yacht Club features seven different types of rooms. Ships that have the MSC Yacht Club on board include MSC Bellissima, MSC Divina, MSC Fantasia, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Preziosa, MSC Seaside, MSC Seascape, MSC Seaview, MSC Seashore, MSC Splendida, MSC Virtuosa and MSC World Europa.

Note: Not all Yacht Clubs have the same suite types available.

MSC Yacht Club Interior Suites

Although these 161- to 226-square-foot cabins don't offer a view or fresh air, they are elegantly decorated and include all the Yacht Club benefits mentioned above.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suites

These Yacht Club digs are the equivalent of a balcony cabin — but in a dedicated area that includes all the exclusive perks. They run 236 to 366 square feet and have balconies ranging from 54 to 86 square feet, so they also come with a bit more space, both inside and outdoors.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Grand Suites

Similarly, Deluxe Grand Suites are like the Yacht Club equivalent of booking a Grand Suite with more perks. Depending on the ship, they offer anywhere from 269 to 463 square feet of space, plus 65- to 129-square-foot balconies. Some Grand Suites also have two bedrooms instead of one. Further, these rooms on Seaside Class ships include bathrooms with bathtubs, as well as separate living areas.

MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suites

Rising two decks, MSC's duplex staterooms measure 495 to 635 square feet and come with 65- to 334-square-foot balconies. They feature living rooms with two-person sofa beds downstairs and master bedrooms upstairs, which also sleep two passengers.

Each of these accommodations comes complete with two walk-in closets and two bathrooms — one with a bathtub and one with a shower. Most duplexes on Meraviglia and World Class ships also have their own private whirlpool tubs.

MSC Yacht Club Executive and Family Suites

The line's Executive and Family Suites, available only on Fantasia Class vessels, are an excellent choice for anyone who wants to stay in the Yacht Club with a family or other group of more than two people.

This option, which is one type of suite (despite its confusing name), has space for up to five cruisers via a combination of bunk beds, sofa beds and beds that pull down from the ceiling, depending on the ship. The suites clock in at around 431 to 549 square feet, depending on the vessel.

The only drawback is that these staterooms have no balconies and no in-room dining areas, but they do include all the perks you'd find in Yacht Club cabins.

MSC Yacht Club Royal Suites

Although they only occupy one level, at 388 to 667 square feet, MSC's Yacht Club Royal Suites are right up there with the Duplex Suites in terms of space. They offer the second-largest amount of square footage after the Owner's Suites. They come with huge balconies comprising 355 to 753 square feet of outdoor area.

Additionally, bathrooms in these suites offer bathtubs on Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World Class ships, and the latter three have private whirlpool tubs, as well. All four classes' Royal Suites also include separate living room areas.

MSC Yacht Club Owner's Suites

The largest and most impressive of all MSC's cabins are the Owner's Suites found in the Yacht Club. Offering an impressive 840 to 1,119 square feet — larger than some land-based apartments — plus 269- to 670-square-foot balconies, they're some of the most luxurious rooms afloat.

Specific amenities vary by ship, but as an example, Owner's Suites on MSC World Europa offer floor-to-ceiling windows and walk-in closets. These accommodations on both the line's Seaside and World Class vessels also feature bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs, as well as private whirlpool tubs and separate living room areas.

Bottom line

Although MSC Cruises' cabin types are straightforward, the line's add-on experiences can complicate things a bit.

Overall, what's key to remember is that MSC Cruises offers a wide variety of rooms and pricing to meet just about any budget or style of cruising. Each ship will offer accommodation choices from the least expensive, bare-bones interior rooms to the priciest suites, which come with butler and concierge services.

When you sail with MSC Cruises, you can expect function, style and comfort, regardless of the cabin type you book.
