Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

#1 best value tour!

We are the most recommended and the most affordable tour! We have 12-15 passenger vehicles (includes the driver). We have 4-wheel vehicles. We have a 4×4 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van, 4×4 Ford Minibus, Ford Transit and TurtleTops – all with high ceilings and big windows, with stepstools if needed. With us you don’t have to wait for 30-plus people to get on and off at every stop if you are on a coach bus – which we are not. We have very comfortable vehicles and we do NOT cram you in like sardines! We always try to leave a couple empty seats, on purpose, for your comfort and enjoyment! We have the most amenities and we cover over $60 of your admission fees! We will beat any price for the all-day tour! Please call us to inquire.

If we had a red carpet, we would roll it out for you! Also we go to the most places and see the most wildlife, not to mention the many hidden gems of the 1.2 million acre black hills national forest and surrounding area!

Also, included in this amazing affordable tour, experience the 71,000 acre custer state park, featuring one of the world’s largest free roaming herds of american bison, “Buffalo”! See america’s national land mammal, the iconic symbol of the american west, freely roaming along the wildlife loop, “Where The buffalo roam and the deer and the antelope play”!

Black hills above & beyond tours, great tour.

We had a great experience and tour. RJ was our tour guide. He provided great insight and details throughout the experience. Every stop was awesome—seeing bison, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer Park, etc.. We really enjoyed being able to learn more about Needles Highway and getting out to see inside the tunnel. Highly recommend the business!!

Cultural Treasures and Historical Sites

The legacy of mount rushmore.

Carved into the granite face of the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore National Memorial stands as a symbol of America’s rich history, rugged determination, and the monumental achievements of the nation’s most revered leaders. The colossal sculpture features the 60-foot high faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

The creation of Mount Rushmore was an engineering marvel, involving the efforts of over 400 workers and the innovative vision of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Despite the challenges, the project was completed between 1927 and 1941, without the loss of a single life. Visitors to the memorial can explore the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, the Presidential Trail, and the Sculptor’s Studio, gaining insight into the sheer scale and craftsmanship of the monument.

A look at South Dakota's top sightseeing destinations: Mount Rushmore, Badlands and more

H ome to the Black Hills, the Badlands and the sprawling prairies of the Great Plains, South Dakota is a state rich in scenery and features monuments and dedications to the likes of everyone from Crazy Horse to George Armstrong Custer. It's also a state extremely proud of its history.

Attracting some 14.7 million tourists annually, South Dakota touts six national parks, some 63 state parks and 16 historic landmarks.

Here's a look at a few of them.

WHY SEE WYOMING? HERE ARE SOME OF THE COWBOY STATE'S TOP ATTRACTIONS

No South Dakota travel itinerary would be complete without Mount Rushmore at the top of the list.

Completed in 1941 and originally named the "Shrine of Democracy," Rushmore was designed by Gutzon Borglum, a sculptor who'd previously undertaken proposals for larger-than-life, relief-like stone monuments – like Georgia's Stone Mountain.

Situated in the Black Hills just outside Keystone, a small, sleepy Pennington County town of about 240 people, Rushmore is perhaps the most recognizable presidential memorial in the country as well as one of its top tourist destinations, clocking in at some 2 million visitors per year.

GOP MOVES TO PROTECT MOUNT RUSHMORE FROM ACTIVISTS LOOKING TO RENAME IT OR TEAR IT DOWN

Famously featuring the heads of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, each about 60 feet in height and carved directly into the mountain's granite face, Rushmore was originally intended to be even more elaborate. Each president's likeness was supposed to be carved down to his waist, though this plan was quickly abandoned after funding dried up.

Washington's likeness was the only one where this work was even started – and a sharp eye can easily make out his ascot and jacket lapels on the finished monument.

Sprawling across nearly 243,000 acres in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park is known for its jagged, colorful sedimentary rock formations created by millions of years of erosion and the recession of a shallow sea that covered the area some 75 million years ago.

WEATHER SHAPED BADLANDS OVER MILLIONS OF YEARS, RESULTING IN OTHERWORLDY LANDSCAPE

Its prolific prehistory also rendered the park – which was once home to ancestors of the modern horse and rhinoceros – extremely rich in fossil beds.

It's also known for its vast prairies and the diverse array of wildlife residing in them. Among species currently calling the South Dakota Badlands home are bighorn sheep, bison, prairie dogs, pronghorn, golden eagles and the black-footed ferret – one of the world's most critically endangered mammals .

Located in the Black Hills in Custer County – and not far from Mount Rushmore – this planned monument is set to depict legendary Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse on horseback pointing at his tribe's ancestral land.

Much like Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial is also being carved directly into a mountain. However, set to stand some 564 feet high, it's a much larger undertaking.

With the monument having been a work in progress since 1948, only Crazy Horse's face and hand can be made out, and there's no set completion date for the rest of it.

Upon completion, the Crazy Horse Memorial will be the tallest statue in the U.S. and the third-tallest in the world .

With a population of just over 1,000 and a quaint Main Street lined with old brick shops and saloons, Deadwood might look like any other unassuming Great Plains town – but in its 19th century heyday, it was anything but.

Deadwood, located near the Wyoming border , was notorious for its lawlessness, rampant criminal activity and frequent murders.

It's also home to the site of James "Wild Bill" Hickok's 1876 killing and the saloon where Jack McCall purportedly shot the legendary gunman during a poker game still stands, prominently advertising itself as the "Wild Bill Bar."
