David said a while back he would never dance on stage, well Sir Francey was dancing up a storm Jan11/20 at the Rogue. I think he may possibly be hinting at a run for a part in "Riverdance" Is there no end to this man's talents? Once again he was in fine voice despite having the trailing end of bronchitis. He demonstrated this by doing "Torn Screen Door" by himself! When he announced the song there were a few gasps at attempting this song "alone" He nailed it. No problem. And I must say we nailed the chorus. Much fun was had by all. I saw quite a few younger people in the crowd this time. Interesting. You're starting to get to them David. Well done.

A talented, honest, intimate performance. It's been years since I enjoyed a concert this much. Love David Francey's music, and adore him in person. His ability to write expressively about common experiences elevates his music beyond the sphere of much of today's manufactured music. If ever you have a chance to listen to his work, or better yet see him perform, you're in for a remarkable journey.

Tour Leader

David francey is a scottish-born canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter, who has become known as “one of canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (toronto star)..

A truly authentic folk singer, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s, his wife, artist Beth Girdler, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then, he has released eleven albums, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band, The Rankin Family, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer.

Francey also had the honour of receiving the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award as well as taking home the Grand Prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the Folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award. “David’s straightforward songs tell honest stories of real people and real places. Poetic perception and a keen eye for the heart of the matter are trademarks of the man and his music. His songs and stories are a direct connection for audiences seeking depth and meaning in the day-to-day.” Shelter Valley Folk Festival David Francey was born in Ayrshire, Scotland where he got his first taste of the working life as a paperboy. At age 10 he was devouring the newspapers he delivered, establishing a life-long interest in politics and world events while developing the social conscience that forms the backdrop of his songs.

He was twelve when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can trace his love of the land, the history, and the people of his adopted country to weekend family drives exploring southern Ontario. Music played a large part in these family outings. They sang traditional Scottish tunes as they drove through the Canadian countryside. Dad and sister Muriel sang melody, while mother and David sang harmonies. His attachment to Canada grew with travel. He hitched across the country three times, then thumbed his way to the Yukon. This attachment surfaces in his songs of rail lines, farms, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. He grew to understand the people while working in Toronto train yards, the Yukon bush, and as a carpenter in the Eastern Townships. These experiences colour his first CD, Torn Screen Door, with songs like Hard Steel Mill, Gypsy Boys, and Working Poor and his second, Far End of Summer, with Highway, Flowers of Saskatchewan and February Morning Drive. In concert David is a singer and a storyteller. His wry humour and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following. David lives with his wife, artist Beth Girdler and in the quiet but charming Lanark Highlands in southern Ontario. They are visited often by their son Colin, daughters Amy and Julia and grandkids Tristan and Alice.

Acclaimed Folk Singer-Songwriter David Francey To Begin Ontario Tour In Support Of New Album

david francey tour dates

Acclaimed folk singer-songwriter David Francey has released his

highly anticipated album, The Breath Between on September 15th. This poignant

collection of songs marks his first release in five years, capturing the essence of life's

fleeting moments with introspection and intimacy.

The album is a poignant yet beautiful reminder of the passage of time, or as David

describes it in the title track, “the breath between the here and gone”. It is introspective

and intimate.

Although David has covered the themes of love and loss before, this album does so in a

nostalgic and touching way, capturing a particularly reflective period in his life. Fans of

“Come Rain or Come Shine” will be delighted by David’s new song, “One Day”, which

depicts a memory from the start of his relationship with his wife, Beth, and features

backing vocals and guitar by their son, Colin. More than twenty years later, he is still

inspired by the same love.

“I Called it Love” travels even further back, reminiscing about a wholesome childhood

love that will have any listener smiling and picturing their own innocent childhood crush,

even if names have long been forgotten.

Among the most affecting of David’s new songs are the ones about the opposite end of

life. In “Offering”, David describes a final visit to a hospital to say goodbye to a close

friend in bleak but beautiful detail, perfectly capturing the deep hurt of a life changing

loss over simple piano and rich cello.

In “This Morning”, David covers the loss of a great inspiration to many, John Prine. Prine

fans will enjoy how the song cleverly samples Prine’s “That’s the Way the World Goes

David’s outstanding lyrics are highlighted by gentle piano and backing vocals from Terra

Spencer. Terra also features in a duet on one of the standout tracks of the album,

“Narrow Boats”. In this song, David and Terra softly sing the basic premise of the album;

“It won’t be long / sunny or cloudy skies / river will always rise / hearts always mend”.

The Breath Between was recorded at This Old Church studio in southern Quebec. The

musicians on this album come from every era of David’s musical career. They include

members of his late 90s band, Dave Clarke and Geoff Sommers, long-time collaborators

Darrin McMullen and Mark Westberg, and of course, new collaborator, Terra Spencer.

The album also features contributions from the members of Vishten, including the late

Pastelle LeBlanc.

David Francey's legacy of genuine, soul-stirring folk music is set to resound once again. The

album will be available on all streaming platforms.

"In a time of uncertainty, we managed to pull together a nice body of work which

created much joy in the making." - David Francey

Folk music is often described as “the people’s music,” and nobody comes by that label

more honestly than David Francey. David spent the first 25 or so years of adulthood

working in rail yards, construction sites, and bush camps across Canada, distilling his

observations of working life into plain spoken poetry that he set to music in his head as

A proud member of the working class, he never intended to earn money from his music

and resisted performing until the age of 45 when he finally succumbed to pressure from

friends and family. He was as close to an overnight sensation as a folk singer can get,

earning prestigious performance offers from across the continent. But David remained

wary of music industry artifice and famously only quit his day job after winning his first

Juno – for his sophomore album, Far End of Summer.

Since then, he has risen to the top of the global folk scene entirely on his own terms –

his humour, humility, open-heartedness, and slice-of-life storytelling making him a

favourite on folk club and festival stages and winning over fans such as Hockey Night in

Canada host, Ron MacLean.

He’s won a total of three Junos, topped the Penguin Eggs magazine critic’s poll three

times, and had songs featured on both Hockey Day in Canada and Hockey Night in

Canada. His songs have been covered by numerous artists, including the Del McCoury

Band, The Travellin’ McCourys, The Trews, Raylene Rankin, Tracy Grammer Matt

Anderson and James Keelaghan.

Born in Ayrshire, Scotland to parents who were factory workers, he moved to Canada

with his family at the age of 12 and developed his love of singing while exploring the

country with them on road trips. His lifelong devotion to his working class roots was

captured in the documentary film Burning Bright, which was broadcast nationally on the

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Documentary Channel.

Seaway (2009)

In late May of 2005, David Francey and Mike Ford were granted the incredible opportunity to spend two weeks aboard the MV Algoville. The captain and crew of this 750-foot bulk carrier of the Algoma Central Laker fleet allowed them to witness life onboard first-hand. They sailed from Montreal to Thunder Bay and back along the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the majestic inland sea of the Great Lakes.

This CD is a collection of songs inspired by that trip.

"The songs on this album address the different paths my life has taken, both good and bad. Some were written from experience gained aboard an Algoma Central ore carrier. Some were written about people I met out on the road or the places I ended up.  Some are memories recalled and described. All deal with transitional moments in life, mileposts on the hopefully long march where we all earn our 'right' of passage." ~ David Francey

David Francey teams up with collaborators old and new on The Breath Between

david francey tour dates

With the release of his new album, The Breath Between , singer-songwriter David Francey returns with more than just a collection of new songs. He returns with a changed voice. For a number of years David had been dealing with voice issues, culminating in a complete stoppage of singing on doctor’s orders. The muscles in his throat had worn down from 20 years of recording and touring. The only treatment was vocal rest and exercises. With one artistic outlet gone, David turned to his other passion, painting. He embarked on a cross-Canada tour with his artwork, selling originals and prints at galleries from coast to coast. He did manage to record the Juno-nominated album, The Broken Heart Of Everything, in 2018 but his voice problems have persisted.

“I was quite unnerved by the whole thing,” he said at this year’s Folk Harbour Festival in Lunenburg, N.S. “Losing your voice is a bit drastic at this age and for doing what I do.”

Oddly enough, what helped him through this difficult time was the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown that saw every touring musician staying home. Another help was David’s friend, filmmaker Tony Girardin. Tony had purchased a little church with the intention of turning it into a studio and got David to do some paintings for the walls. While David painted Tony played David’s albums and soon enough David was singing along to himself.

“I was in a perfect place to sing, and I rediscovered my voice!”

Assisting David to create The Breath Between were longtime bandmates Mark Westberg and Darren McMullen, plus singer-songwriter Terra Spencer, who plays and sings on the album. Terra also has a couple of co-writes with David. But an added treat for David was working again with Dave Clarke and Geoff Somers, who toured and recorded with David in the early years of his career.

“I’d written a song about John Prine passing away, and the first person I thought of was Dave Clarke,” he said. “It’s been really nice to have both ends of my musical life represented on this album.”

During the time of COVID David wrote a lot of songs, but something strange did happen. He couldn’t come up with melodies for a couple of songs, so he sent them to Terra.

“I think she’s one of the best writers I’ve ever heard anywhere,” he said. “What came back were these beautiful melodies. I couldn’t have asked for better.”

david francey tour dates

Over the years of his career, David Francey has toured with a wide variety of accompanists. Starting with Dave Clarke and Geoff Somers, he’s shared stages with Shane Simpson, Craig Werth, the trio of Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch and Fats Kaplin, Mark Westberg, Darren McMullen and Chris Coole, and lately with Jess Weddon and Chris Murphy. While skilled musicianship has always been important, the primary consideration for David has been how they are as people.

“I always go for the ones that strike me as wanting to do this music, who get the music and understand what I’m trying to do,” he said.

David’s reputation as a songwriter has been another boon to his career. James Keelaghan recorded David’s ‘Red-Winged Blackbird’ back in 2000. Most recently, the Chicago-based bluegrass band Special Consensus included “Highway 95” on it’s new album, Great Blue North , an album featuring their interpretations of Canadian songs. In between, David’s songs have been covered everywhere from North America to Ireland, Scotland and Australia.

‘A huge believer in Terra’

“People covering your tune is the biggest thrill you can have!” he said.

The thrill peaked when bluegrass artist Ronnie McCoury recorded David’s song “Borderline” for the 2017 Grammy-winning album The Travelin’ McCourys.

With the release of The Breath Between , David is embarking on a month-long tour with, Terra Spencer opening the shows.

“I’m a huge believer in Terra” he said. “I want her in front of my audience ’cause I think they would love her as much as I do.”

Tour Details

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

david francey tour dates

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
