Overview [ ]

Some users may be limited to remaining on the same spatial spot of a differing timeline, others may be able to move to a different spatial position. When fully mastering this ability, you can even move back/forward seconds or minutes in time. The full potential of this power is unknown, but possibly limited by the user's health, endurance, and stamina. [1]

Triggering The Power [ ]

Time travel is a very hard concept to grasp. When Five first time-travelled he got stuck in the apocalyptic future. Just like Energy Projection , you must have a firm grasp over the power to control it. Time travel can be used in a variety of ways, but it must be mastered in order to be used properly. Some time travel occasions require lots of complex math, as it took over 40 years for Five to calculate a proper equation and even then he only got it partially correct. [2]

Known Users [ ]

Number five [ ].

Five can travel through time. Five, however, had not mastered this ability, and the first time he used it, he accidentally traveled to the end of the world and was unsuccessful for a long time in traveling back. Despite being less adept at time travel, Five is a quick study and he was able to travel through time and take his siblings with him on his first attempt. [3] Five is able to reverse time by a couple of minutes, undoing events during that time so that only he remembers them and can alter events. [1] It is unknown if Five has fully mastered this ability.

The umbrella academy's complete timeline (& alternates) explained.

Time-travel plays a huge part in The Umbrella Academy, resulting in a messy web of different timelines. Here's a handy breakdown of each of them.

Netflix's The Umbrella Academy has heavily used time travel across its seasons, producing multiple branches from The Umbrella Academy timeline. Here's a breakdown of them and the pivotal events that comprise each. Written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy began life as a series of graphic novels. The first installment — The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite — was told across six issues, and the story continued in The Umbrella Academy: Dallas and The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion . A planned fourth installment — The Umbrella Academy: The Sparrow Academy — is also on the way.

The Umbrella Academy became one Netflix's most popular shows and was soon renewed (it's now renewed through season 4). The show follows a group of people who were born with superpowers under mysterious circumstances. Adopted and weaponized by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), the childhood superhero team reunite as wayward adults in order to mourn his death and prevent an oncoming apocalypse. Despite failing to achieve the latter, the siblings escaped their fates by time-traveling together into the past, and time travel has had a huge effect on the last 3 seasons. Here's a breakdown of the tangled web that is The Umbrella Academy timeline.

Long Ago...

Though The Umbrella Academy timeline and the various events of them remain in flux, Reginald Hargreeves looms as the ever-present constant. Apart from unexplored periods of Five's tenure as a Commission assassin , no forays have been made anywhere close to Reginald's distant past. As such, his flashback revealed in The Umbrella Academy 's season 1 finale has remained unchanged.

  • Pre-1898 - Reginald Hargreeves Leaves His Homeworld: A glimpse at a much younger Reginald Hargreeves seen in a previously-unfamiliar environment. Speaking with a bedridden woman that was either his wife or otherwise close to him, he learns that some kind of imminent doom is coming. Soon after, it was revealed that Reginald Hargreeves is from an alien planet, from which a mass exodus is already in progress. After being encouraged to join such efforts, he opened a mysterious jar to release an even more mysterious entity into the air.
  • Post-1898 - Reginald Hargreeves Arrives in America: The alien Reginald Hargreeves was next seen in The Umbrella Academy timeline preparing to board a boat likely traveling from England to America. How long exactly he had been in England or on Earth itself is unclear. However, his arrival in the United States was sometime after 1898. This was made clear by the sign for the D.S. Umbrella Manufacturing Company, which marked it as having been established in 1898. Reginald promptly purchased the company that he would go on to serve as part of a billion-dollar empire.

The Prime Timeline: 1962 - 2015

  • 1962 - Pogo's Training Begins: Reginald Hargreeves worked with Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins) in The Umbrella Academy timeline to raise, educate, and train Pogo for space travel and more. The pair frequently treated and cared for Pogo more like a son than a scientific experiment.
  • November 22, 1963 - Older Five Arrives For JFK's Assassination: Firmly a part of the Temps Commission, a 58 year-old version of Five was tasked with ensuring the assassination of John F. Kennedy. However, he opted instead to leave his post and traveled forward to 2019.
  • March/April 1967 - Klaus Arrives From The Future: Having accidentally acquired and activated a Temps Commission briefcase in The Umbrella Academy timeline, Klaus was dropped right in the middle of the Vietnam War. Forced to blend in with the military, he ultimately meets and falls in love with a fellow soldier named Dave.
  • February 1, 1968 - Dave Is Killed In Action: During a mission in the A Shau Valley, Klaus and Dave were caught in a battle and pinned down by heavy gunfire. Though Klaus survived, Dave wasn't so lucky and succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound in Klaus' arms. A grief-stricken Klaus took Dave's dog-tags and used the briefcase again in order to return to 2019.

  • October 1, 1989 - The Children Are Mysteriously Born: A group of women around the world gave birth to children despite not having been pregnant when the day began in The Umbrella Academy timeline. The birth resulted in forty-three children, each with different special abilities. Lila Pitts (Ritu Arya) is later revealed to be one of the special 43 children. Harold Jenkins was also born on the same day, albeit conceived in an unconnected and rather more normal fashion.
  • Later in October 1989 - Multiple Children Are Adopted: In the weeks that followed, Hargreeves sought out many of the children. It ultimately transpired that Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of them. He soon after designated them by number: One (Luther), Two (Diego), Three (Allison), Four (Klaus), Five, Six (Ben), and Seven (Viktor).
  • Sometime in 1993 - Lila's Parents Are Murdered By Five: During a bogus mission generated by The Handler (Kate Walsh) in The Umbrella Academy timeline, Five assassinated Lila's parents. The Handler subsequently took Lila in as her own daughter and ultimately trained her as her own personal assassin.
  • Also in 1993 - Viktor Rebels Against His Training: Noted in Reginald Hargreeves' journal, Viktor began demonstrating a refusal to adhere to his commands. He also began lashing out in violent ways, resulting in the deaths and/or serious injuries of several nannies. As a result, Hargreeves built a robot version of his partner, Grace, in order to serve as Viktor and the other children's mom.

  • Later in 1993 - Reginald Has Viktor Brainwashed: Though The Umbrella Academy 's Mom worked in several areas where Viktor was concerned (namely in eating oatmeal), Reginald remained fearful of Viktor's powers in The Umbrella Academy timeline. As a result, he produced special pills that would dampen Viktor's destructive abilities. He also had Allison use her own mind-altering powers to convince Viktor that he was, in fact, powerless.
  • June 1, 2001 - Reginald Cruelly Trains Klaus: During a flashback in The Umbrella Academy timeline, it's revealed that part of Klaus' childhood training was to be locked in a mausoleum. The measure was ostensibly designed to help Klaus move past his fear of the dark and the ghosts he could conjure. However, it only served to further traumatize him. Soon after he began turning to drugs in order to suppress his abilities.
  • 2002 - The Umbrella Academy Are Introduced To The World: Minus Viktor, the adopted Umbrella Academy siblings embarked on their first mission and foiled a robbery at the Capital West Bank. Immediately afterward, Reginald held a press conference, officially unveiling the superhero team.
  • Later in 2002 - Harold Is Rejected By Reginald Hargreeves: Running away from his abusive home, Harold attempted to join the Academy since he was born on the same day in The Umbrella Academy timeline. Unfortunately, Reginald deemed him average and without powers. Subsequently kicked off the property, Harold was bitterly humiliated. Returning home, he channeled that rage into murdering his father and was sentenced to twelve years in prison as a result.

  • November 10, 2002 - Number Five Jumps Forward In Time: Eager to attempt time travel, the ageless Five ended up in an argument with his adoptive father. Believing it too dangerous, Reginald insisted he should simply keep working on his spatial jumps. Five's response was to run away and attempt to jump through time anyway. Unfortunately, he ended up jumping too far into the future and found himself stranded in a post-apocalyptic Earth.
  • 2006 - Ben Dies While On A Mission: The exact nature and cause of Ben's death in The Umbrella Academy timeline remain a mystery. However, The Umbrella Academy season 2 finale revealed that it occurred while the group was out on a mission. After the funeral, Klaus was able to summon the ghost of Ben, as he had been too afraid to go into the light at the time.
  • 2007 - The Umbrella Academy Start To Leave Home: Diego (David Castañeda) was the first to leave shortly after he turned 18. It's unknown in which order the others inevitably left to pursue their own interests and live their own lives.
  • 2012 - Luther Is Injured While On A Mission: Now the only member of the Umbrella Academy left, Luther was sent on a mission solo. Unfortunately, things went awry, and Luther (Tom Hopper) was brought back in critical condition. In order to save him, Reginald used the same serum he once used on Pogo. Though it succeeded at saving Luther's life, it left his body permanently transformed to resemble a gorilla.

  • 2014 - Harold Jenkins Is Released From Prison: Despite The Umbrella Academy 's Harold Jenkins (John Magaro) being locked away for over a decade, his obsession with The Umbrella Academy remained firmly intact.
  • 2015 - Viktor Writes His Memoir: Titled Extra Ordinary , Viktor penned an autobiography in The Umbrella Academy timeline about his childhood and growing up amid The Umbrella Academy. In the process, he revealed several of the group's secrets. As a result of the book, he briefly enjoyed the traditional fifteen minutes of fame.
  • Later in 2015 - Reginald Sends Luther To The Moon: Though the specifics are never made clear to Luther, he lived on the moon for four years. During that time, he frequently sent back samples and extensive reports .

The Original Apocalypse

Upon his arrival in the apocalyptic future in The Umbrella Academy timeline, Five discovered the bodies of his siblings amid the rubble of the Umbrella Academy headquarters. Given that the location is a far cry from the Icarus Theatre, it implied that a different final battle with Viktor once occurred to constitute The Umbrella Academy 's apocalypse. Also different is that he found Harold Jenkins' prosthetic eye tightly in Luther's grip, meaning that Harold must have been still alive and present for that particular clash.

Equally, each of the siblings' bodies is more or less intact, rather than destroyed in a global firestorm caused by an asteroid impact. Therefore, the exact nature of Viktor's original apocalypse in The Umbrella Academy timeline was also likely different. Whatever occurred in this version of the timeline, however, will probably remain both unknown (and irrelevant) - since Five's eventual return to 2019 would serve to generate a new branch and establish what would become the show's prime timeline.

The Prime Timeline: 2019

  • March 21, 2019 - Reginald Hargreeves Commits Suicide: Though not revealed until midway through The Umbrella Academy season 1, Reginald took his own life to draw the siblings back for his funeral in The Umbrella Academy timeline.
  • March 24, 2019 - Reginald's Funeral & Five's Return: The siblings returned to the Academy, and the ensuing tensions led to Ben's memorial statue getting damaged. That same day, a 60-year-old version of Five time-traveled from 1963, but ended up reverting to his 13-year-old state.
  • March 25, 2019 - Viktor Meets Harold Jenkins: Posing as Leonard Peabody, Harold approached Viktor under the guise of wanting violin lessons. Allison moved closer to discovering the truth behind her father's death while Five tried to track down Harold via the prosthetic eye from the future. Five was later attacked by Hazel and Cha-Cha while visiting the mannequin Dolores at a department store. With more siblings learning of the apocalypse, The Umbrella Academy timeline was moved even further away from its original course.

  • March 26, 2019 - Hazel and Cha-Cha Attack The Academy: Breaking into the facility, the duo clashed with Diego, Allison, and Luther while Viktor witnessed from the sidelines. Though the assassins were eventually driven out, they succeeded in abducting Klaus. They tortured him for information, before burning down the prosthetics lab that Five was trying to get information from. Klaus escaped with the help of Detective Patch, but she died in the process. Diego shut down the malfunctioning robot he knew as Mom. He later found Patch's body and, in his grief, swore vengeance. Newly escaped and armed with a Commission briefcase, Klaus accidentally traveled back to 1967 Vietnam.
  • March 27, 2019 - Five Is Offered A New Job: As a result of Harold's murderous intervention in The Umbrella Academy timeline, Viktor successfully auditioned for the first chair in his orchestra. Similarly, courtesy of his manipulations, Viktor stopped taking what he believed to be anti-anxiety medication. Having orchestrated a meeting with The Handler, Five was offered a new job with The Umbrella Academy 's Temps Commission . To protect his family from the oncoming apocalypse, he accepted.

The First Aborted Timeline

As a result of accepting The Handler's offer, Five ventured with The Handler to the Temp Commission's headquarters. While there, a whole day played out for the rest of the siblings back in the present. The events of that day in The Umbrella Academy timeline - March 28, 2019 - unfold throughout The Umbrella Academy season 1, episode 6, "The Day That Wasn't".

Klaus got sober enough to summon the ghost of Dave, Allison and Luther admitted their feelings and prepared to leave town, and Viktor learned early about Harold having Reginald's journal. Unfortunately, each of those developments was erased when Five once again returned to 2019. Appearing at the start of the day, he essentially cut short what would have become of that The Umbrella Academy timeline and set things once again on a different path along the prime Umbrella Academy timeline .

The Prime Timeline: 2019 Continued

  • March 28, 2019 - Viktor's Powers Are Awakened: Though several elements of the day were erased, others remained firmly intact. Luther discovered his time on The Moon was for nothing. Devastated, he turned to drugs and went to a rave. There, Klaus got into a fight trying to protect him, leading to him suffering a head injury. While unconscious, Klaus had an encounter with his father, learning more about his death. Viktor's latent powers awakened fully after Harold hired a group of thugs to attack him. Viktor used his powers to defend him, killing two of the thugs and costing Harold his right eye.
  • March 29, 2019 - Viktor Almost Kills Allison: Harold tried to help Viktor get more control of his powers in The Umbrella Academy timeline. After being tracked down by Allison, however, Viktor learned the truth of her part in having his memories altered. Once again losing control, Viktor lashed out with his powers and slit Allison's throat. Diego, Klaus, Five, and Luther found Allison barely clinging to life.
  • March 30, 2019 - Luther Imprisons Viktor: Allison was saved by Pogo and Grace back at the Academy. Elsewhere, Viktor found his father's journal and discovered the extent of Harold's machinations. Provoked, Viktor once again snapped and brutally killed him. Afterward, he returned to the Academy, only to be knocked unconscious and locked away by Luther. Because of this, Viktor fully gave in to his dark side and used his powers to escape her confinement.
  • April 1, 2019 - The Apocalypse: Now unleashed, Viktor destroyed the Academy in The Umbrella Academy timeline, killing Pogo in one of the most shocking deaths and destroying Grace/Mom in the process. Pursued by Temps Commission soldiers, the siblings went to the Icarus Theatre to confront Viktor, but were unable to stop him from firing a beam of his energy, which damaged the moon Umbrella Academy's Luther spent so much time on and sent an asteroid hurtling toward the Earth. With only moments to spare, Five succeeded at time-traveling all of them away to safety.

  • Some Time Later - The Handler Recovered: After being shot in the head by Hazel, but shortly before the apocalypse, The Handler's body was pulled from the timeline. Moments before being incinerated, it was revealed that she survived the attempt on her life. After going through recovery, The Handler (who was almost played by Jon Hamm) was summarily demoted at the Temps Commission by A.J. Carmichael.
  • Post-Apocalypse - Five's Journey: With the Earth still wiped out in The Umbrella Academy timeline, Five's time in the desolate wasteland remained intact. However, the version that this timeline's Five traveled to would be slightly different. His sibling's bodies would be nowhere to be found and there'd be no eye to retrieve. Equally, Five's mannequin Dolores would likely have been burned to a cinder. He would spend forty-five years stuck alone in the future, until being recruited for the Temps Commission sometime around 2060.

The Alternate Timeline: 1960 - 1963

Things were shaken off course almost immediately after the Hargreeves siblings touched down in their new decade. Though each arrived separately and at different points, each of them settled quickly into their new environments. As a result, throughout The Umbrella Academy season 2 , they all had a direct influence on the new world around them, and some of their decisions and actions would ultimately have wide-reaching consequences for the once steadfastly established The Umbrella Academy timeline.

  • February 11, 1960 - Klaus and Ben Arrive in Dallas: As the first to arrive of The Umbrella Academy's members, Klaus and Ben stumbled around trying to get their bearings, and learned the date and year from a magazine. Later that same day, Klaus was taken in and cleaned up by a wealthy older benefactor. He dazzled socialites by using Ben's help to perform parlor tricks.
  • April 1961 - Allison Arrives in Dallas: Allison had a rougher introduction to the 1960s in The Umbrella Academy timeline . Having ventured into the same diner as Klaus, she also turned away due to it being a "Whites Only" establishment. Upon her exit, she was chased by a group of racist thugs. Seeking sanctuary in a salon, Allison was protected by its owners and began working there.

  • September 1961 - Allison Meets Raymond: After Raymond Chestnut (played by Yusuf Gatewood) came into the salon for a meeting of his group, he and Allison first noticed each other.
  • Christmas 1961 - Allison and Raymond's First Date: Despite having had her vocal cords damaged when her throat was cut, they were revealed to have healed throughout the year. After some months of exchanging silent looks, Ray eventually asked her on a date. At that point, she vocally offered up her name. She also began to immerse herself in his civil rights campaigns, even offering him notes on his pamphlets.
  • Also in 1961 - Klaus Establishes His Cult : A brief glimpse during a montage of flashbacks revealed Klaus traveling with his followers on a bus through Mexico in The Umbrella Academy timeline.
  • 1962 - Luther Arrives in Dallas: Emerging in the pouring rain, Luther immediately called out for his siblings. When that yielded no success, he accumulated enough money for a bus back home. Arriving at what would one day become Hargreeves' Umbrella Academy, however, Luther was cruelly snubbed by Reginald. Luther returned to Dallas and eventually began working as a bodyguard and professional fighter for Jack Ruby.

  • Late 1962 - Allison and Raymond Get Married: Given that they were only married for a year before Allison had to return to 2019, Allison and Raymond's ( one of the best Umbrella Academy relationships ) wedding likely took place in the later months of The Umbrella Academy timeline.
  • September 1, 1963 - Diego Arrives in Dallas: Landing in a more traditional superhero fashion, Diego immediately reverted to old habits. Hearing a woman's scream, he rapidly foiled a mugging. He also got to grips with his new surroundings after seeing a speech from JFK on an old-fashioned TV in a store window. Suddenly passionately resolved to single-handedly stop the JFK assassination, Diego began stalking Lee Harvey Oswald. Unfortunately, he was apprehended outside of Oswald's house and institutionalized.
  • October 12, 1963 - Viktor Arrives in Dallas: Though he had been unconscious in Luther's arms when they began time-traveling, Viktor arrived alone and awake. Disorientated, he stumbled from the alley and out into the middle of the road. There, he was hit by a car driven by Sissy ( Marin Ireland, The Dark and the Wicked ). Alongside her son, Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly), Sissy checked on Viktor and eventually took him in to live with them.
  • Also in 1963 - Klaus Abandons His Cult: Seen surrounded by countless followers now, an overwhelmed Klaus took the opportunity to disappear into the crowd in The Umbrella Academy timeline. Driving away from San Francisco, he revealed to Ben his goal to return to Dallas. The two clashed over the plan. Klaus was later arrested when he stole another man's car en - route.

The 1963 Apocalypse

The opening of The Umbrella Academy season 2 marked a much more dramatic change to November 25, 1963 in The Umbrella Academy timeline. Though JFK hadn't been assassinated, a devastating war soon followed. Therefore, once again, the siblings were forced to face down another apocalypse without Five . Having arrived later than them, he was dropped into the final moments of it. Though they offered a thrilling united front, they were doomed in the face of several nuclear weapons. Fortunately, Hazel made a brief appearance to save Five and transport him back ten days earlier.

As such, Five was able to reunite the team early in The Umbrella Academy timeline and use the foreknowledge to their advantage. Unlike the culmination to The Umbrella Academy season 1, they (though mostly Ben) were subsequently able to once again branch the timeline in a less fatal direction and more successfully avert a global disaster the second time around. The timeline with the apocalypse must still exist somewhere in a now-distant and defunct part the show's multiverse, however. Like the Umbrella Academy 2019 apocalypse , it paradoxically needed to have happened and Five to have experienced it in order for it to be prevented.

The Alternate Timeline: 1963 Continued (and 1982)

  • November 15, 1963 - Five Arrives From The Alternate Future : After rescuing Number Five and secretly giving him video footage, Hazel is killed by a trio of Swedish assassins. Five managed to track down Elliot (Kevin Rankin), a man who had been monitoring the alleyway the siblings had arrived in, and used his research to find the other Hargreeves siblings of The Umbrella Academy .
  • November 16, 1963 - Luther and Viktor Are Reunited: After picking up a drunk Carl from a local Dallas club in The Umbrella Academy timeline, Viktor is spotted by Luther. Visiting him at Sissy's farm, he apologized for failing to help him after he learned of his powers and his part in causing the apocalypse.
  • November 17, 1963 - Allison Leads A Civil Rights Sit-In: In one of Allison's best moments , organized across the earlier episodes, Allison and Raymond's group went through with their peaceful protest. Ray was able to attend after Klaus and Ben orchestrated his release from jail. The event descended into chaos, however, after violent backlash and brutal police intervention.

  • November 18, 1963 - Viktor Learns The Truth: Luther revealed to Viktor that he caused the 2019 apocalypse in The Umbrella Academy timeline. In response, Viktor resolved to leave everything behind. After Harlan nearly drowned, however, he changed his mind. After giving him CPR, some of Viktor's energy is transferred to him.
  • November 20, 1963 - "Team Zero" Meets Young Reginald: The entire group reconvened to meet with their father. Unfortunately, The Umbrella Academy's alien founder Reginald proved unimpressed with the group and rudely snubbed them again - though not before learning their names, powers, and how such as Allison and Viktor focused them. Even seen writing them down, the Umbrella Academy gave him everything needed to knock the timeline in a new direction.
  • November 22, 1963 - JFK's Assassination: Under the belief that he's a Russian spy, Viktor is brutally tortured at the FBI building. That coupled with his returning memories sent his powers once again out of control. Having been taken to the Commission in The Umbrella Academy timeline, Diego used the facilities to learn that Viktor's destruction of the building is what led to The Umbrella Academy 's apocalyptic war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Klaus, Allison, and Diego infiltrated the facility to rescue him. Though they failed, Ben sacrificed himself to calm Viktor down, and JFK's assassination went ahead as history had recorded last time.
  • November 23, 1963 - The Umbrella Academy Go To War: With Viktor aware of his psychic connection with Harlan, he returned to the farm just as the powers he acquired from Viktor started to go out of control. At the same time, the entire force of the Temps arrived, with The Handler eager to claim Harlan for her own. After Viktor wiped out the countless assassins, Lila is revealed to be able to mirror The Umbrella Academy's powers . After The Handler and most of the Commission were killed, the siblings took a briefcase from a fallen Commission agent, said their goodbyes, and time-traveled back toward 2019.

  • 1982 - Five Kills The Temps Commission Board: Five jumped forward in The Umbrella Academy timeline as part of a deal with The Handler. Interrupting a meeting of those in charge of the Commission, he killed them all without mercy. He immediately went back to November 21, 1963.

The First Alternate 2019 Timeline

Five was forced to resort to drastic measures to get his family back to 2019 in The Umbrella Academy timeline. Knowing that his older self had arrived in Dallas, Five and Luther attempted to make a deal with him to acquire his Temps Commission briefcase . Though the older Five agreed, the paradoxical effect of being close to each other made both versions paranoid and homicidal. With both of them conspiring against the other, they ended up brawling after the younger version opened the same kind of portal to 2019 he'd once used. Before that, Five had given his older self the equation to ensure he wasn't reverted into a teenager.

It is unclear, however, whether he was lying about it since he believed he needed his past self to venture through in the same manner in order to preserve his existence in The Umbrella Academy timeline. Equally, the elderly Five ended up being forcibly kicked into the vortex rather than coordinating his own path through it. Whatever the case, Luther inadvertently ensured that the version of 2019 the older Five went to would ultimately turn out different than in the highly rated The Umbrella Academy season 1 — since he armed him with the specific details of who and what caused the apocalypse.

As such, he was likely in a better position to prevent what the original versions had previously failed. Thus, a new The Umbrella Academy timeline would have been created. The moment also seemed to confirm that what viewers were witnessing were branches of a multiverse. After all, Five remained in existence despite the older Five going into the vortex being different from him as a result of being armed with such additional knowledge.

The Second Aborted Timeline

Following the epic confrontation with the forces of the Temps Commission, the members of the Umbrella Academy managed to reason with Lila. They even came close to bringing her around to their side of the conflict. Unfortunately, The Handler stepped in and gunned the entire Hargreeves family down in a hail of bullets. After being confronted by Lila, The Umbrella Academy 's The Handler (Kate Walsh) even callously killed her adopted daughter.

Clinging to life, however, Five was able to finally master a new facet of his abilities and reversed time, causing further confusion in in The Umbrella Academy timeline. However, the process resulted in bringing the team and Lila back to life. Simultaneously, he put himself into a position to intercept The Handler before she could strike. As a result, Five successfully curtailed another tragic branch of the timeline before it truly manifested.

The New 2019 Timeline

As a result of their paradoxical interactions in the 1963 The Umbrella Academy timeline, namely meeting with and disappointing their father even before their birth, the Umbrella Academy returned to a very different 2019. Not only were they greeted by a very-much-alive Reginald Hargreeves, but also a brand new team that had usurped their home and position. Revealed to be the Sparrow Academy , the majority of their identities were shrouded in mystery as part of The Umbrella Academy season 2 cliffhanger.

Shockingly, however, the Number One of the new team was revealed to be an equally still-alive Ben Hargreeves. Now sporting a scar and a more vicious demeanor in The Umbrella Academy timeline, he rudely inquired about the new arrivals. Things were left hanging at that moment. As such, more time-travel shenanigans than ever were required to set things back to their familiar order in The Umbrella Academy season 3.

The Sparrow Timeline: 1918 - 2019

  • 1918 - Reginald Hargreeves Builds Hotel Obsidian: The Umbrella Academy finds themselves hiding out in Hotel Obsidian , and it's revealed in The Umbrella Academy season 3, episode 8, through a flashback that Reginald Hargreeves built it. In an effort to find the portal to the alternate dimension Oblivion, Hargreeves surveys the land that the hotel is eventually built on and even sends a team of soldiers through the portal to Oblivion. However, things don't go according to plan, and none of them make it out of the portal alive.
  • 1953 - Lila Visits The Commission's Headquarters: The Commission, an organization that oversees and manages the space-time continuum, finds its headquarters in the 1950s. In 1953, Lila makes a visit in The Umbrella Academy season 3 , episode 7, because of her adoptive mother's (The Handler) unexplained death at the end of season 2. After this, she ends up going back to West Berlin in 1989.
  • 1963 - The Umbrella Academy Meets Again: After the Umbrella Academy is separately transported back to Dallas in the '60s in season 2, the five are finally able to reunite in 1963. Consequently, this is the year that the world is supposed to end. However, the team is able to stop the apocalyptic event in time and then travel back to the present day.

  • 1989 - The Super-powered Children Are Born: In The Umbrella Academy season 3, the Umbrella Academy timeline jumps back to the infamous day when the super children are born to reintroduce the children of the Sparrow Academy , Hargreeves' proteges in an alternate timeline. Now that season 3 has come to pass, audiences know 14 of the children's identities, including the Sparrow Academy and Lila. However, the remaining 29 children are still unknown and could be introduced in the fourth and final season.
  • 2014 - Pogo Becomes A Tattoo Artist: In The Umbrella Academy season 3, episode 6, it's revealed in a flashback that Pogo tries to control a fight between Sparrow Academy's Ben and Jayme, which ends up going way too far. Hargreeves insists that the two continue their brawl, and Pogo vehemently disagrees with him. After an argument between talking chimp Pogo and Hargreeves, the leader of the Academy kicks the former out for good, explaining how Pogo goes on to be a tattoo artist when he's found by Five in 2019.
  • 2019 - The Umbrella Academy Vs The Sparrow Academy: The bulk of The Umbrella Academy season 3 storyline occurs in the present day, with the alternate timeline seeing Hargreeves' Sparrow Academy and the Umbrella Academy go head to head. All in all, Five and Lila are the only two characters that travel through time in season 3, making The Umbrella Academy timeline much easier to follow in the third installment. The last bit of time travel sees Five as an elder in an unspecified post-apocalyptic time.

In The Umbrella Academy season 3 ending , the Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy team up to prevent another apocalypse due to the time paradox which threatened to destroy the world as a whole. While season 2 saw the gang have to give up their Dallas lives, season 3's consequences were dire. What resulted was a total universe reboot with overwhelming changes for all of the characters, and a couple of the after-effects of the new Umbrella Academy timeline are revealed. Hargreeves plans to sacrifice them all to reset the timeline. However, Allison goes into action and chops about a third of his head off, forcing his plan into motion regardless.

The new Umbrella Academy season 4 timeline will see Hargreeves more powerful than ever before, as his insignia is seen on buildings all across the area. Hargreeves' wife, Abigail, is alive in the new Umbrella Academy timeline, meaning season 4 should reveal a lot more about her life. Hotel Obsidian no longer exists in the rebooted universe, but the mysterious Obsidian Memorial Park does. While the Umbrella Academy siblings' injuries are reversed from the Hotel Oblivion incident, they have all inexplicably lost their powers. Luther is revealed to be alive, but Sloane is missing. In addition, a heartwarming moment sees Allison reunite with her daughter, Claire.

It's completely unknown if the Umbrella and Sparrow Academies were born in the new Umbrella Academy timeline, and audiences will have to wait for season 4 to find out. It's wholly possible, as the Umbrella Academy siblings weren't born in the Sparrow timeline, and it's unclear what this could mean for the space-time continuum. It's possible that the Diego/Lila pregnancy storyline will continue in The Umbrella Academy season 4, but it hasn't been revealed how the rebooted universe affects that. Finally, with the knowledge that Five founded the Temps Commission, his exit at the end of season 3 could see him returning there to restore The Umbrella Academy timeline.

The Time Travel Rules That Five Has To Follow On Umbrella Academy

Five smiles on The Umbrella Academy

From Doctor Who to Back to the Future , every time travel-centric show or movie follows a certain set of rules, and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy is no different. The show's resident time traveler, Five, has a set of time travel rules he has to follow , although he's often of the mind that rules are made to be broken. Unfortunately for the brilliant time traveler, his actions always have consequences.

The Umbrella Academy writers have been candid about the difficulties of creating a time travel rulebook for the series. In Netflix's Behind the Scenes podcast, showrunner Steve Blackman and several other writers shared how they sat down to hammer out the rules for Five, as well as for The Commission. And while they initially planned to model Five's time-traveling guide after Back to the Future 's set-up (essentially, if you change something in the past, it causes a ripple effect that changes your timeline as well, leading to Marty McFly almost erasing himself from existence), they ultimately decided time is too complicated for every change in the past to directly affect the futures of the main characters.

"For a long time, we've just been laboring under the Back to the Future rules," The Umbrella Academy writer Rob Askins explained. "The notion that every change in the past is gonna change your future. A sort of basic cause and effect notion. Time is messier than that, matter is messier than that. So you can go back and change things and you won't necessarily be changed ... the picture in Marty McFly's hand is not necessarily going to erase slowly."

Five's primary time travel rule on The Umbrella Academy is expect the unexpected

What's tricky about Five's powers is he doesn't have complete control over them. The first time he time travels, he ends up in a post-apocalyptic future with no way of returning home. Because he hasn't fully grasped how to move back and forth through time, he has to be careful about the jumps he makes to avoid ending up in another time he doesn't want to be in, or inadvertently changing the past so significantly he ends up triggering another apocalyptic event.

Additionally, he needs to at least try to play nice with The Commission. Even though Five doesn't have any qualms about meddling in the past or the future , The Commission's goal is to preserve major historical moments — like the Kennedy assassination — in order to keep the timeline in order. Five and his friends are far less concerned about the timeline as a whole than they should be, which leads to them averting Kennedy's assassination in season 2 and causing an apocalypse that could only be undone by allowing the president to die.

Because of this experience, Five seems to realize meddling with major world events is trickier than going back in time a few minutes to save his siblings' lives. As such, he's time-traveled enough now to know his actions in the past can cause major repercussions in the future — which means he should limit the amount of historical changes he attempts to make.

Five knows paradoxes should be avoided at all costs

One hard and fast rule Five seems to accept is paradoxes should be avoided where possible. In the world of The Umbrella Academy , paradoxes occur when you meet a version of yourself from the past or the future, which results in both parties suffering from paradox psychosis. Paradox psychosis is a seven step process which begins with denial and ends with homicidal rage — a situation Five experiences first hand when he has to work with an older version of himself in season 2.

Generally speaking, it's never a good idea for two versions of the same person to hang out with another. It goes against the natural order of time, and the universe reacts accordingly. Still, Five is willing to risk murdering himself (or being murdered by himself) if it means correcting other time travel mishaps and putting the world back on track.

Respecting the Butterfly Effect is Five's latest time travel rule

Because not every change Five and his siblings make to the past affects them in the future, they were fairly lax about living their lives in the '60s. Since none of the superpowered kids would be born until the '80s, it seemed like they were safe to do as they pleased after Five accidentally scattered them across the decade at the end of season 1.

However, since then, Five and his family have learned the hard way that the Butterfly Effect is real. While it's true that traveling back in time won't automatically mess with the characters' timelines that doesn't mean they're immune from unexpected consequences. Case in point: When they return to the present day at the end of season 2, they find an entirely different group of people at The Umbrella Academy, which is now known as The Sparrow Academy.

It's unclear how this massive shift in their own timelines will play out in season 3, but it seems safe to assume Five will have a greater respect for the Butterfly Effect moving forward.

Time travel is always complicated, but for Five, the concept is even trickier than usual, because even when he tries to follow his own rules, he just can't seem to escape the unforeseen consequences of his trips.

SPOILER ALERT:  Do not read if you have not yet watched the second season of “ The Umbrella Academy ,” streaming now on Netflix.

Traveling through time certainly takes its toll — not only on characters’ emotions and on their relationships, but also on their larger world.

In the second season of Steve Blackman ‘s streaming adaptation of “The Umbrella Academy,” the seven Hargreeves children get sent back to the 1960s after stopping the apocalypse in present-day. They end up scattered across the first few years of the decade, but all in the same place: Dallas, Texas. While there, they have mere days to stop yet another world-ending event, which has ties to JFK’s assassination.

Diego (David Castañeda) is convinced he has to stop that assassination, while Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) works to change history through the rights that Black Americans have, leading a sit-in at a local diner. Klaus (Robert Sheehan) gathers followers and is treated as a messiah (or cult leader, depending on your point of view) after he is witnessed floating thanks to an assist from Ben (Justin Lin), while Luther (Tom Hopper) gets involved in underground fighting and amnesiac Vanya (Ellen Page), after being hit by a car, is taken in by the woman who hit her, and the two fall in love .

It is up to Five (Aidan Gallagher) to figure out how to get them all back together to stop the next cataclysmic event and return home. And while eventually they do both, the home they return to is not the Umbrella Academy of their youth but one where their father and Ben are still very much alive.

Popular on Variety

“We all have such serious opinions about how [time travel] works,” Blackman tells Variety . “Vanya asks why she can’t just bring Sissy and [her son] Harlan back; they’re inconsequential, and Five says nothing is inconsequential when you’re dealing with time travel. Their time in 1963 has had major repercussions.”

Here, Blackman talks with Variety about some of the second season’s major character developments, including Vanya and Sissy’s relationship, Allison’s activism and Klaus’ cult, as well as revealing there are more people in the world like the Hargreeves children and what other changes may be in store if and when the show is renewed for a third season.

Aside from the Ben of it all, there’s also this large looming piece of Sissy’s son Harlan left behind in the 1960s with new abilities and no one to help him come to terms with them, let alone control them. How important is that going to be in the show going forward?

The biggest change is there is this flesh and blood Ben standing there, saying “Who the hell are you?” Justin’s excited, if we get a Season 3, to finally work with more of the actors. I do know what Season 3 is — I’ve already planned it out — but there were a lot of open-ended questions and loose ends, and one of them is Harlan. We are left with happens to Harlan, what happens to Dave, and a few other things. But I think that’s the fun of the show: I like television shows that don’t answer all of the questions for me, so I don’t plan to tie up all of those loose ends. Especially on a time travel show, we have the luxury of answering these questions in future seasons or not.

Similarly, revealing that Lila could adapt to and mirror everyone else’s ability certainly makes her a threat like no other.

I think it’s fair to say there are others out there like them. Some of them might be good and some of them might be evil — and some of them might be in the middle. With Lila the limitation is, she can harness the power but only to a certain degree — she gets tired and can’t do it, and ultimately they’re able to take her down.

What were the challenges in finding something that would be a credible threat against the Hargreeves who, when they are all together, complement each other with their abilities?

Each of them has a limitation: They’re not a Superman-type character where things are just endlessly possible. Five runs out of blinks; Vanya needs to recharge. The goal for me is to challenge them with the internal challenges and the family, but also to find unexpected challenges to what it is to be a superhero. Like, Allison’s reluctance to use her power because it often corrupts her. We’re trying to see, “What would a real superhero’s life be like?” and not feel like we’re in the DC or Marvel universes — I have great respect for them, but this is different. We want you to feel like, “I could be this character.” They’re also not equal in their abilities; they’re all evolving and I think as we go forward their powers will get stronger and they’ll learn new things about them, but it’s OK in this universe that one of them has a stronger power than the other. And that’s where the emotional stories come in — one looking at [another] like, “I wish I could do that” or “It’s not fair they’re stronger than me.”

Why were the 1960s the perfect backdrop for this season?

In the graphic novels, JFK was a very small part of it. I wanted to set the whole show in this time period because I love the conspiracy theories around JFK, but also it was a very tumultuous time when you talk about civil rights and the Cold War, and we weren’t that far away from the missile crisis. There was a heightened sense of paranoia about Communism and what Yugoslavia was going to do, so there was this amazing upheaval, and I thought, “Why not complicate their lives by putting them in a 10-day period, mostly before the assassination of this famous president?” It was hard for production to do it, but it was a great place to start the story. The majority of production shot in Toronto but we did go to the Grassy Knoll to shoot those scenes there.

That had to be extra emotional, especially given how so many love to speculate on what could have been, but typically in pop culture if JFK lives, the world ends in another way.

It was [emotional] for the crew, and I talked the cast through a lot of it, too. I think we all just felt a sense of awe and respect being there on the Grassy Knoll in Dallas. In some ways that we talked about, things were not so far from where they are now in terms of racism, but in other ways, like being the height of the Cold War, it was tough in other ways to live through as well.

With an ensemble this large, there are a lot of individual journeys to manage whether they’re split apart, as they are at the start of the season, or working alongside each other, as they are later. Which character or journey was your starting point for breaking the season?

I knew I couldn’t start the season where all of them arrive together. At one point I started that way on paper, but I thought it was too easy, so I came to the conceit that they would all arrive at the same place but in different time periods because spreading them out by a few years meant they got to have real-life stories. They all think the others are dead, and how do they deal with that and move on? But the extra complications [are things like] Allison is married to a husband she really loves and has a cause, Klaus has started a cult, Luther is miserable but still has a life. It made it harder for them to leave [those things], but I hoped the audience was striving to see them come back together. And when they do come back together, they come back stronger and better for it. The dysfunctions and foibles are still there, as you see in the scene in the tiki bar, but you’re cheering for this family to get it right.

Given that you wrote this season months ago, you couldn’t have known how some of the scenes with 1960s police brutality against Allison and her husband (Yusuf Gatewood) would mimic things we’re seeing on the streets today, but racial injustice has not disappeared in between the 1960s and today. So what were some of your references for the activism and protests in this storyline?

Just to be upfront, we wrote this a year ago so no, we did not know how our lives would be affected by George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. But from the beginning I spent a lot of time with the writers doing a ton of research. Even though our show exists in the fantasy world, we couldn’t glaze over the racial issues in the ’60s. It was so important that we grounded them in a real way. So Allison lands and she sees a “Whites only” sign as her first welcome to 1963. We’re playing a woman of color who really has no voice in the segregated South — and she actually lost her voice, which makes it more challenging. Then the sit-in idea was an amalgamation of many sit-ins of the time period from our research. We wanted to make it authentic, and when we shot it it took two days and nights and it was very emotional on set and it was a very moving scene because you forgot where you were when the lights were down and we rolled the camera. We were in awe that these brave people of color would walk into a place that said “No whites” or “Whites only,” sit down and be publicly humiliated. We didn’t realize when we were telling the story, but we’re reminded now that things really haven’t improved as much as they should have.

What were the challenges of shaping Vanya and Sissy’s story so that there were all of the good feelings that came with watching two people fall in love but still staying true to the time period where they wouldn’t be accepted?

I definitely wanted to tell an authentic love story, and having Marin Ireland and Ellen Page, you can’t do better as actors. But I wanted to be honest for what it would be like for Allison to be a woman of color in the South in 1963 and also to have a woman like Sissy — a queer woman in the ’60s could go to jail, could lose custody of her child; she had no rights. So it was important that we complicate that story. She says to Vanya, a woman of 2019, “You may understand what it’s like to be different, but my life could be completely destroyed in a way that you would not understand.” And I think that’s what’s so interesting about Sissy. And there’s a moment — and Ellen plays it beautifully — where it just sits with [Vanya] where she realizes that there’s more at stake than just the love story. There’s also a child in this relationship, and it could seriously screw things up for him. I talked a lot with Ellen about this storyline and how we could make it feel beautiful and have hope but still be honest. I honestly believe if Sissy and Vanya didn’t have to separate it could have been a love story for the ages.

Going back to Klaus, a cult is not typically a humorous thing, yet with his personality, it provided some of the lighter moments of the season. And still, he’s also humbled at times and seems to genuinely learn from the experience and hopefully that will stick.

Klaus wants to be loved, adored and taken care of, but having the knowledge of the future and being able to recite a lot of famous lyrics of songs would be a powerful thing for Klaus. He uses it deceitfully to have a following because he has no money and he’s a master manipulator and he just can’t stop himself. He’s not a mean guy — he’s not drawn to do bad things — but then it overtakes him and he does have all of these people who have expectations of him. And in my mind, the following long lives after Klaus is gone. So probably in 2019, there is still this Klaus cult with thousands of new members in India and America that are following his teachings, even though he stole most of his lyrics from Destiny’s Child and the Backstreet Boys.

When we first met these characters last season they all had so much trauma from their childhoods manifesting in different ways and they have had to face down so many physical, large threats, so how important is it, as time goes on in the show, to show some of these events or the simple camaraderie they are finding with each other helping them heal from that trauma?

Do we ever get over our childhood traumas? I say this as the son of two psychologists, and this is just my opinion, but I think that we’re always struggling to overcome our childhood trauma. I remind people that in terms of the storytelling time period, they’ve only been back together for three weeks — each season is 10 days. So they’ve been pretty good for three weeks together after years apart and having an abusive father. But I think they are starting to come into their own and starting to have a better understanding, but they’re always going to struggle.

Their father being alive will undoubtedly add to the struggle. And what about Pogo?

I love Pogo, don’t get me wrong, but I had to say to myself, “There’s only a little bit of Pogo I’m going to do this year because it’s right for the story.” But we have a Season 3, it would be a good be to think that Pogo is back — and not hanging on antlers.

By the same logic, is there a future for the Handler? And if so, how do you work through concerns that the showdown between the Hargreeves and their opposers might feel less satisfying if they have to keep going after each other?

I think the Handler might actually be really dead this time around. As much as I adore Kate Walsh — and this is my third show with her, so clearly I like her a lot — we spent so much time in the writers’ room trying to create the logic for the time travel, so for the uber-uber fan they don’t feel like we hit a complete reset button. They’ve clearly done something to cause the change, but I think it will be unexpected.

'The Umbrella Academy' Timeline: Every Apocalypse, Explained

The Umbrella Academy sure has to deal with a lot of apocalypses.

While Season 1 of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy featured its share of timey-wimey shenanigans, Season 2 took things up a notch, adding several more layers of complexity to the time-hopping tale. By the end of Season 2, viewers have seen multiple alternate timelines spin up and collapse, and by the time the final scene plays, it's hard to know for certain what did or did not happen anymore. So if you've watched every episode of The Umbrella Academy and are still a little unsure how it's all supposed to fit together, we've put together a detailed timeline to try to help it all make sense.

Of course, it is impossible to fill in all the gaps in The Umbrella Academy 's multifaceted timelines, especially considering that there are some parts of the series — such as many of the scenes set at the Temps Commission, which exists both in 1955 and also outside of the timeline — which defy a chronological order. Additionally, there are multiple versions of some dates, each occurring in a different timeline. So rather than cataloging the events of The Umbrella Academy in steadfast chronological order here, we're going to be organizing them by timeline. Each time a new one spins off, we'll note the precise moment where it splits from the previous one. Unless otherwise noted, you can assume all of the events prior to the split still occurred in subsequent timelines.

[Editor's note: The following contains spoilers through the Season 2 finale of The Umbrella Academy , "The End of Something."]

Netflix's The Umbrella Academy delves heavily into the idea of time travel, arguably the most challenging of sci-fi concepts with its tendency to create paradoxes and confusing timelines.

Number Five can cause enough chaos all on his own with his ability to teleport through space and time, but things get even crazier when he joins up with a mysterious organisation known only as The Commission.

Of course, there are also certain hidden secrets that we only learn about in flashback towards the end of season one, but when placed in order they offer a fuller picture of this uniquely troubled family.

Here's your guide to the timeline of The Umbrella Academy:

1993: Sir Reginald Hargreeves begins training his adoptive children in their unique special abilities. Each of them make significant progress, including Vanya - the most powerful of them all.

2002: The Umbrella Academy makes their public debut, stopping a robbery of Capital West Bank in Maine. The team quickly amasses legions of fans, including the aforementioned Harold Jenkins, who collects comic books and action figures based on the group. One day, not long after they're debut, he approaches them dressed in a homemade costume asking to join them, but Sir Hargreeves humiliates him in front of a large crowd. Later that day, he returns home and murders his abusive father, a crime for which he is sentenced to 12 years in prison.

10th November 2002: Number Five becomes frustrated as his adoptive father forbids him to travel through time. He feels he is ready for the challenge, storming out of the family mansion and making several time jumps, until he finds himself trapped in a post-apocalyptic 2019. His family are shaken by Five's disappearance, with both Vanya and Sir Hargreeves hoping he will one day return.

At an unspecified time in the years that followed, The Umbrella Academy loses another member as Ben (Number Six) is killed on a mission. Years later, in her book, Vanya would reveal to the world that there was "nothing connecting" the siblings after his death, resulting in them gradually going their separate ways.

2012: Luther is the last remaining member of the Umbrella Academy, working with his father Sir Reginald Hargreeves. He is sent on a mission to obtain a dangerous biochemical substance, but is badly wounded and almost dies. His father saves his life by injecting him with a serum that transforms his upper body into that of an ape. He is then sent to the moon under the pretence of an important mission, which he later discovers was anything but.

Ellen Page stars in The Umbrella Academy on Netflix

2014: Vanya begins writing her book Extra Ordinary, which reveals the personal lives of the Umbrella Academy for all to see, effectively alienating all of her siblings. Meanwhile, Harold comes to the end of his 12-year prison sentence and begins plotting revenge.

2018: Allison's husband walks in on her using her powers to make their daughter go to sleep. He is furious and this leads to the breakdown of their relationship.

24th March 2019: The academy reunites for the first time for the funeral of their adoptive father. Number Five teleports back to the mansion from the date of the JFK assassination.

27th March 2019: After being held hostage by Hazel and Cha-Cha, Klaus is freed by Detective Patch and makes off with a briefcase. What he doesn't realise is that the case is a time machine, accidentally transporting himself to 1968.

28th March 2019: Klaus returns from the past the following day, but for him it has been a lot longer. During his absence, he fought in the Vietnam War and fell in love with a soldier called Dave, who was killed in action. Devastated by what he has been through, he destroys the time machine.

Number Five is approached by The Handler and offered another job with The Commission, which he accepts in exchange for his sibling's safety. However, he quickly betrays them again as he remains committed to stopping the apocalypse that they are trying to cause.

Aidan Gallagher plays Number Five on The Umbrella Academy on Netflix

29th March 2019: The Day That Wasn't (episode six of season one). This day begins on an alternate timeline, which sees Luther fail to keep his siblings from walking out on their responsibilities. However, Number Five escapes from The Commission to the beginning of the day, with crucial information that helps to keep them from drifting apart.

For more details on the present day plot, read our Umbrella Academy season one recap .

1st April 2019: The world ends, as a beam of energy that bursts out of Vanya destroys the moon, turning it into a cluster of devastating meteors hurtling to Earth.

Number Five arrives in the future later that day and finds himself unable to jump back to his own time, discovering the dead bodies of his adoptive siblings soon after.

approx. 2047: We can gather that this was around the date that Five was first approached by The Handler, as he claims to be 28 years older than his siblings. He agrees to work for The Commission for five years, but discards his duties much earlier to get back to the present day.

How The Umbrella Academy uses the JFK time travel trope as a Trojan Horse

The Umbrella Academy Season 2

Credit: Netflix

Considering how many conspiracy theories have been generated by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, it is hardly surprising that this historical event has been a consistent source of movie, television, and book inspiration — particularly for genre. Traveling back in time to stop this death from coming to pass is one such avenue tackled by Stephen King, Quantum Leap , and The Twilight Zone . Other presidents have been murdered while in office, but no one more than Kennedy has prompted this kind of reimagining.

In 2008 and 2009, The Umbrella Academy graphic novel portrayed a version of this time-travel trope in the six-issue "Dallas" series that provides the foundation for the second season of the Netflix TV adaptation. However, there are major changes to the setup and resolution, which see the Hargeeves siblings caught up in one of the 20th century's most explosive moments. Rather than using this timeline jump to save Kennedy as the audience might expect, it is a Trojan horse that allows an exploration of other important historical events and personal entanglements.

Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 2 finale ahead.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2

As soon as you see the words "Dallas, Texas 1963," it is virtually impossible not to conjure an image of Dealey Plaza on that fateful sunny November day. Even though there are seemingly limitless theories and quibbles about what went down, the result is still the same — Kennedy was killed. Thrust from an apocalyptic situation in 2019, Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) saves the day but is immediately thrown into another Doomsday scenario.

Instead of Vanya (Ellen Page) as the bomb, the Soviet nukes "vaporize the world," or as Five puts it in Episode 3, "it's a different disease, but ... same result." Arriving in Dallas just before detonation, Five is saved by Hazel (Cameron Britton), who pulls him back 10 days before the end of the world, which also puts him in Dallas before Kennedy's tragic motorcade.

The Umbrella Academy

All the early pieces point to saving Kennedy; however, every Umbrella Academy squad member — except for Diego (David Castañeda) — has alternative pressing concerns, including other significant historical moments that link to personal entanglements. This isn't to say JFK doesn't factor throughout the season — after all, Doomsday is prompted by whatever goes down on November 22.

Nevertheless, it isn't a group mission to stop Oswald or the so-called second shooter. Furthermore, the narrative deviation from the comic book series gives characters like Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) a richer ( and timely ) storyline.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Allison

Instead of landing in Dallas by mistake, the comic book sees the team purposefully travel back to this period. Ultimately, Five and Allison are blackmailed by the Commission into making sure Kennedy dies — Allison poses as Jackie Kennedy and Rumors him to death — and the shadowy Majestic 12 has nothing to do with this nefarious plot. A lot of the "Dallas" comic threads (particular Hazel and Cha-Cha) have already been depicted in Season 1; however, the deviations also reduce the amount of time leaning into this popular sci-fi historical hook.

"In some ways, this is such a new beginning for Allison. It was undeniable that she would either be confronted with, or dealing with, or in the middle of the civil rights movement, because Allison is a Black woman," said Raver-Lampman to SYFY WIRE regarding the timeline shift. The tangential link to Kennedy doesn't overwhelm Allison's storyline of using her actual voice rather than her superpower that she believes has caused so much pain in the past. Her agency is restricted in the segregated South, but she exerts what little influence she has to make a difference within the civil rights movement. Rather than saving Kennedy, she is using activism to change the world for the better. As Diego tells Luther (Tom Hopper) in Episode 5, "everyone changes the world." Powers or not, we all have the potential and ability to make an impact — even if it isn't saving the president.

The Umbrella Academy

Love is a contributing factor to the choices these siblings make. Vanya has amnesia, so she is unaware of the events that are about to unfold until the pieces are filled in for her. Her priority is with Sissy (Marin Ireland) and her son Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly). It is only when reflexes kick in that she is even made aware of her unique abilities.

Unfortunately, Vanya is the root cause of this apocalypse when she inadvertently saves Kennedy after the FBI has used hallucinogenic drugs as a method of interrogation. Under these circumstances, her body goes into defense mode and this chain reaction prevents the shooting, which causes the Soviet-led attack Five witnesses. A suspicion that Vanya is a KGB agent results in her arrest and subsequent invasive questioning. Diego discovers her involvement before it's too late — and his dream of saving Kennedy is thwarted by this very action that saves his sister (and the world).

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Finale

"Why can't you leave JFK alone?" Luther asks Diego in "Valhalla." Diego's response is to default to his hero status, but the subsequent light supper reunion with their father reveals the root of his desire is tied to his daddy issues — how very Freudian. "The last good man who will save us from our descent into corruption and conspiracy? This is a fantastic delusion," Reginald (Colm Feore) observes. "The sad reality is that you're a desperate man, tragically unaware of his own insignificance, desperately clinging to his own ineffectual reasoning."

An eviscerating speech that reduces Diego to a stuttering and teary mess, which only makes him want to save Kennedy even more. He ends up in the psych ward because he tried to kill Oswald and he is still risking it all to play the hero he thinks he should be.

The Umbrella Academy

Conspiracy theories regarding their adopted father Reginald Hargreeves' involvement are brought to light thanks to Hazel slipping the Frankel video footage into Five's blazer pocket. A twist on the Zapruder 8mm film that caught the moment Kennedy was shot, which shows a man on the grassy knoll with an umbrella watching the events unfold. There actually was such a man with an open black umbrella on Dealey Plaza that day who has fueled certain theories — The X-Files depicted this person as an active figure in the conspiracy — however, the rainy day accessory was, in reality, a protest against Joe Kennedy . One reason Kennedy's death and the surrounding theories are depicted more than other U.S. presidents who were assassinated — other than having occurred in living memory — is that it was caught on camera. These photographs and videos add to weight to weird factors like men with umbrellas open on a sunny day.

It is a striking image and one that perfectly fits with the sinister world of this show, but also its title. Incorporating their dad's work into the overall Kennedy plot is an organic way for his adopted children to do what they could not when he was alive. In 1963 they can confront him about his mistreatment and mistakes, which might not lead to a happy ending but will afford some kind of closure. Unfortunately for them, their actions in Dallas drastically alter the present day; when they return to 2019, the Umbrella Academy is now the Sparrow Academy.

The Umbrella Academy

Five's insistence that it could be something other than Kennedy is in part fueled by his more rational thought process than his brother, but he has also been in this exact spot before when he was sent by the Commission to make sure the assassination went ahead as scheduled. This was the one job Five failed to complete, which goes some way to explain why he is so concerned with messing up the timeline even more than it already is. His concern is the end of the world, not the president.

Some of the siblings have a tangential relationship to the Dallas main event, which sees Luther working for the soon-to-be killer of Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby (John Kapelos). Meanwhile, Klaus' (Robert Sheehan) great love Dave (Calem MacDonald) enlists on November 23, 1963, and will die on the battlefield. Klaus uses his intimate knowledge of Dave's family history (including a long military tradition) to prevent the death he has already witnessed. Klaus intervenes when Dave's uncle is selling this vision, but all this does is cause his boyfriend of the future — and past — to sign up a few days earlier than he did. Some things cannot be prevented from coming to pass, no matter how hard a person wills it. It might be the president of the United States or a guy from Dallas, Texas, serving his country in the way he has been taught. Neither Diego nor Klaus saves the man they were desperately trying to.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2

Alternate histories continue to be on-trend because the allure of "What if?" on a large scale is a fruitful source of inspiration that also helps work through current global anxieties. The Cold War has become relevant again with recent political shifts, which is reflected in how TV shows and movies — including Stranger Things — are drawing from this multi-decade period. Science fiction has long reflected ruptures in society, with the threat of nuclear power leaving its mark from the 1950s with Godzilla to the apocalypse scenario of the recent German Netflix series Dark . There is a reason why Susan Sontag's essay "The Imagination of Disaster" is just as relevant now as it was in 1964, when she wrote it. The Umbrella Academy joins the ranks of contemporary television utilizing a pivotal 20th-century event to explore themes that reflect the current landscape.

Ultimately, The Umbrella Academy is about a dysfunctional family that has to prevent the apocalypse (that they probably caused) while working through relationship issues that led them down this path. Season 2 was never about stopping the assassination; rather, confronting their father under the guise of his involvement is more pertinent to the narrative. Each sibling has an old demon to confront, whether it is lost love, how they use their power, or even the daddy issues that shape their actions. By using this historical-based time-travel trope as a leaping-off point, this season subverts expectations and demonstrates that while the conspiracy theories still rage, the end result on November 22, 1963, is still the same. Kennedy can't be saved, but the Hargreeves siblings can still stop Doomsday — even if they have now accidentally written themselves out of their own narrative.

Everything you need to know about Umbrella Academy season 4

M ore than a year ago, Netflix announced that its superhero series  The Umbrella Academy  would be returning for a fourth and final season. It’s one of the best shows on Netflix , and has been consistently inventive throughout its run on the streaming service. The show first premiered in 2019, and is adapted from a comic book series of the same name. Season 3 ended on a pretty suspenseful cliffhanger, so fans of the show were undoubtedly pleased with the news that the show would be back for one more rodeo.

If you’re looking forward to the show’s fourth and final season, you’re not alone. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming season, including who will be returning, how many episodes i will have and when it’s coming out.

Who is in the cast of Umbrella Academy season 4?

The main cast that has been with the show throughout its run will all be returning for the final season, including Elliot Page, Emmy Raver-Lampman , Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, David Castañeda and Ritu Arya. Given the nature of the show’s season 3 cliffhanger, fans also expect that Colm Feore and Liisa Repo-Martell will be returning to play Reginald Hargreeves and Abigail Hargreeves, respectively.

Since the show was renewed for a final season, news has also broke that Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and David Cross have all joined the cast, according to reporting in Deadline . Offerman and Mullally, who are a couple in real life, will apparently play “a married pair of community college professors from New Mexico who wear sensible footwear and suffer from the most extreme case of deja vu this timeline has ever seen.” Cross, meanwhile, is set to play Sy Grossman, “an upstanding, shy business owner and family man desperate to reconnect with his estranged daughter, who will stop at nothing to get her back.”

What is the release date for Umbrella Academy season 4?

The show’s final season will debut on August 8, 2024 , so fans of the show will have to eagerly wait until the end of the summer for the show to return.

What is the plot of Umbrella Academy season 4?

Netflix hasn’t released any sort of official synopsis for the fourth season, but most fans expect that the series will pick up following the explosive events of the season 3 finale, which is where the team learns that they no longer have the superpowers that defined so much of who they were.

The show’s central characters are also now stuck in an alternate timeline, but the ramifications of that massive change have yet to become totally apparent. The show is also expected to spend some time focused on Reginal Hargreeves, the founder of the Umbrella Academy, and may also explain why he founded the academy to begin with.

Although we don’t know many of the details yet, showrunner and creator Steve Blackman has suggested that fans will be happy with the way the final season handles things.

“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago,” Blackman said in statement announcing that the show had been renewed. “But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season4, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”

Is there a trailer for Umbrella Academy season 4?

The show released its first teaser for season 4 in November 2023, but that teaser didn’t provide a ton of concrete hints about where the season would be headed. The core cast seems excited about what the season has in store, but it seems we’ll have to wait until the show is actually released on Netflix to find out exactly what that is.

How many episodes will be in Umbrella Academy season 4?

While previous seasons of the show have been 10 episodes each, this season will be shorter at just six episodes. It isn’t uncommon for companies like Netflix to compress the final season into a shorter run. It gives both fans and creators a chance to say goodbye, but also ensures that the final season is as tight and compact as possible.

In teasing the final season, Blackman revealed that the first episode of season 4 will be titled The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want . That seems like the perfect title for an episode about a group of superheroes who hate their powers, and are now realizing exactly what their lives would be like without them.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

When is the best time to visit Moscow? | Weather, budget, events by month

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.
