The Top 5 Xi’an Day Trips
There is a saying in China: "If you want to see what China has looked like in the last 10 years, you should go to Shenzhen; if you want to see what China looked like 100 years ago, you must go to Beijing; if you want to see what China looked like 1,000 years ago, then you should go to Xi'an". Xi'an, along with Rome, Athens, and Cairo, is known as being one of the four famous ancient capitals in the world.
Here, we have provided information about the top five day trips from/in Xi'an. If you have limited time in Xi'an, these will help you experience the city in an efficient way. If you have more time, you can combine these day trips to enrich your experience.
1. Xi'an One-Day Highlights Tour -Terracotta Army, Ancient City Wall, and Muslim Quarter
When it comes to Xi'an, people will think of the Terracotta Army , which is the typical highlight there. You can't say you have been to Xi'an if you haven't visited the Terracotta Army.
It was constructed to accompany the tomb of China's first emperor to guard him in the afterlife. You can explore the site of the Terracotta Army to learn about how the warriors were made, how they have been preserved, and what their original colors were.
Your private guide will accompany you to a local cave dwelling where a craftsman makes terracotta warriors in a traditional way. You can learn traditional techniques that were used 2,000 years ago and try making a mini warrior yourself.
Xi'an City Wall is a landmark of Xi'an and it surrounds the old city in a large square-shaped area. You can take a leisurely stroll or cycle on the wall to enjoy its inner and outer walls, watchtowers, moat, and landscaped environs, as well as slightly elevated views of the city.
Experience the profound Muslim cultural atmosphere in the Muslim Quarter where you can see a number of ancient architectural buildings and find both traditional dishes and special snacks, such as roujiamo – marinated beef or lamb stuffed inside a freshly baked bun – and cold noodles, which can be made from rice or from flour.

Pay a visit to Hanyang Tomb - Emperor Jingdi's mausoleum. The Han Dynasty reached its peak in the reign of Emperor Jingdi and his son, Wudi. You can discover the reasons it reached its peak at that time by seeing the relics displayed and the stories shared by your guide.
Visit Shaanxi History Museum to appreciate the most typical items used during the Han and Tang dynasties. You will understand the impact that cultural exchange with other countries and regions had.
Go to an ancient academy to learn about China's traditional costumes. There, the teacher will tell you stories behind Hanfu. You can try one on to get a unique taste of the ancient culture. Dressed in Hanfu and wandering around in a beautiful garden, you will feel as though you have stepped back into ancient China from 1,000 years ago.

Hundreds of thousands of statues and caves are carved and dug into two mountains sprawling over 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) from south to north. The site is a man-made architectural marvel.

Located in North-Central China, Xian is the capital of the Shaanxi Province , with a population of around 13 million people. With thousands of years of history to explore, there are many exciting things to do in Xian. You should definitely consider adding a trip to Xian to your China itinerary.
“Xian was one of the few exceptions I found. It was genuinely interesting and pretty, and rather a stately and dignified place” Paul Theroux, Riding the Iron Rooster
The Top 10 Things to Do in Xian City
1. your absolute #1 must see in xian – the xian terracotta warriors.
Xi’an’s most famous attraction is the Terracotta Warriors Museum . You’ll need your comfy shoes and a fully charged camera here because you’re in for a long day, with lots of walking and unusual things to see.
If you have a private tour guide , everything will be taken care of, but it’s pretty easy to find your way around independently.
As one of China’s most popular tourist destinations, the Terracotta Warriors Museum will be busy; you should expect large crowds.
Aim to arrive as soon as the gates open and avoid weekends and Chinese public holidays like the plague!
The Terracotta Warriors Museum is one of the most popular things to do in Xian; we took the Xian Skip-the-Line Terracotta Warriors Private Day Tour to concentrate on simply loving every second at this iconic site!
Here is my complete guide to visiting the Terracotta Warriors Museum , which includes the must-see exhibits, with tips and tricks to help you plan your visit.
2. Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum
While the terracotta warriors and horses are world famous, the mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor Qing Shi Huang, which has yet to be excavated, is less well known.
If you have time, it’s worth taking the free bus to the mausoleum site from the museum. You will need to show your ticket to the museum to use the bus and get to the mausoleum site.
Guides will tell you that the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum took 720,000 labourers almost 40 years to build and that the burial chamber is larger and more splendid than the Great Pyramid. It’s also believed to be intact – not raided like so many of the tombs in Egypt.
The Chinese government won’t allow the mausoleum to be opened until archaeologists know how to preserve any treasures they find. We may have to wait many years for the secrets of this tomb to be revealed. Meanwhile, there’s little to see apart from the great burial mound.
💡 Pro Tip: The site is enormous! You can ride by cart around the excavation sites, but ensure you have lots of water in your refillable water filter bottle as it can get very warm.
3. Cycle Around the Old Xian City Wall
Cycling around the ancient city wall encircling the old city is the ultimate way to see Xian City . It’s an unmissable way to see the huge contrast between the higgledy-piggledy ancient city streets within the wall and the modern sprawl of skyscrapers beyond the boundary.
Riding around Xian City Wall will take 45 minutes to an hour, allowing for regular stops to enjoy the view and take photos.
Read All about Cycling the Xian City Wall , including how and where to hire a bike and what to look out for from the wall.
4. The Shaanxi History Museum
The vast Shaanxi Museum is a cornucopia of Chinese history that’s bigger than the Louvre!
You could easily spend a week exploring the cavernous exhibition halls, but you can see the highlights in a couple of hours – with the right know-how!
The sheer size and the busy crowds make knowing what you want to see essential, so you should plan your visit before you arrive.
5. The Drum Tower Xian
The 14th-century Drum Tower, located in the geographical centre of Old Xi’an , is moments from the City Wall.
This is the largest Drum Tower (of this type) in China) and it will give you a fascinating insight into what life was like in Old Xian City when this tower was used as an “early warning” system. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear the drums being played – it’s quite thrilling!
6. The Xian Bell Tower
Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, constructed the 14th-century brick and timber Xian Bell Tower in Xi’an. Standing 118 feet (36 meters) high, the two-storey tower is topped off by three layers of eaves.
It’s very colourful, with grey brickwork, green tiles, red-painted woodwork, and gilding on the roof. Inside, there’s a spiral staircase and many traditional decorations from the Qin and Ming dynasties.
Many tours include a visit to the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower in their itineraries, but not all include entry to the towers. This full-day tour of Xi’an includes a visit to both of these iconic Xian landmarks
7. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda
The UNESCO World Heritage Big Wild Goose Pagod a is about 4 km outside the centre of Xi’an, within the Da Ci’en Temple complex. Showcasing 1,300 years of history, this holy place for Buddhists sits in vast, meticulously landscaped gardens.
Visit South Square to see the Statue of Xuanzang , the monk who imported sacred Buddhist texts into China from India. Afterwards, walk around North Square to see China’s most extensive musical fountains .

You’re missing a trick if you don’t visit the Muslim Quarter in Xian. A thriving warren of narrow ancient streets dating back to the 7th century, it’s home to about 65,000 Muslims and is the ultimate foodie location !.
Packed with stalls and restaurants selling tempting dishes with ancient recipes, the sights, smells, and tastes of the Muslim Quarter tantalise every sense.
The ridiculously cheap food is far more inspiring and authentic than a bland hotel meal . A visit here is the perfect way to end your day.
Don’t worry if you don’t speak Chinese, as most of the stalls and restaurants have pictorial menus. With a bit of pointing, sign language, and a smile, you’ll soon be eating amazing food that’s so much better than any Chinese food you’ve experienced in the West !

Xi’an is home to one of the oldest and best-preserved mosques in China, which still serves the local community of 65,000 Muslims today.
It’s the most beautiful, serene place to visit in Xian City – a peaceful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the Muslim Quarter.
The mosque covers 12,000 square meters, with more than twenty buildings you’ll want to see across its five courtyards. Allow plenty of time to explore here .
10. Great Tang All-Day Mall
A 1,500m pedestrianised street located to the south of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda , the Great Tang All Day Mall or Grand Tang Ever Bright City is lined with buildings celebrating the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907) and is one of the top tourist attractions in Xian.
Filled with architecture and sculptures telling Tang stories and lively street performances, it’s a great place to shop, eat and people-watch. During Chinese New Year , expect there to be lots of extra activities!
Top Tip: Evenings are the best time to visit the Great Tang All Day Mall when the street is transformed with glowing Chinese lanterns and bright neon, and the air is heavy with the scent of delicious food.

15. Mount Hua Shan – Climb One of the Five Great Mountains of China
While you may not want to attempt the infamous “ death walk ” high up in the mountains, this spectacular landscape is a delight. You won’t want to miss the Buddhist and Taoist temples that cling to the sheer rocks, and you don’t have to do the scary walk (unless you want to!)
This Xi’an Huashan Mountain Adventure Day Tour leaves Xi’an early to make the most of your day and includes a cable car ride to the summit of Mount Hua Shan.
16. Daming Palace and Danfeng Gate
The super-sized Daming Palace was the Imperial Palace of the Tang Dynasty for almost 300 years but fell into disrepair long before England had even trembled at the thought of William the Conqueror.
The palace was (re)discovered in 1957 and now forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor “.
The best thing to do at the Daming Palace site is gasp in awe at the sheer size of the Dafeng Gate – the central southern entrance to the palace. It has an astonishing five massive doorways. Everything at this site is super-sized!
17. Volunteer to Work With Pandas 🙂
Volunteer work with critically endangered pandas is just about the most enriching cultural thing you can do on a day trip from Xi’an.
It’s a bit of a faff to get to, but this Volunteer with Pandas tour , with a private guide, is fantastic! It might just be the #1 highlight of your whole China holiday.
Don’t forget your camera! Take an extra SD card and a spare battery too – you WILL need them for all those oh-so-cute panda pics!

This site is an easy tag-on to a trip to the Terracotta Warriors Museum, as there’s a direct bus between the two sites. Don’t miss the reconstructed houses that are designed to look like the original Neolithic settlement on this site.
19. Xingqinggong Park
Visiting Xingqinggong Park in the Beilin district is one of the most fun things to do in Xian , and it’s also FREE. If you’re travelling with kids, it’s a great place for them to let off steam for a while.
Built on the ancient Xingqing Palace site, this is the largest park in Xian – perfect for a leisurely stroll around the Xingqing Lake where Emperor Xuan Zong enjoyed boating!
Where to Stay in Xian
We stayed “within the walls” to be within walking distance of the Xian City Wall and other central landmarks, including the Muslim Quarter. The centrally located Bell Tower Hotel – just 200 yards from the Drum Tower and the Muslim Quarter – was fantastic.
The Sofitel Legend Hotel is just outside the old city, but you’ll revel in the comfort and high standards here. It’s also on the doorstep of several Xian attractions.

1 Day Classic Mount Huashan Tour from Xian
Classic Way to Explore Mount Huashan for One Day
- Accommodation
Mount Huashan , located in the northeast of Xian city, is one of the Five Great Mountains of China and is known for its steep and challenging hiking trails, as well as breathtaking scenery. It is considered a sacred site in Chinese Taoism and has been a place of pilgrimage for over 2,000 years. What attracts numerous travelers to Mount Huashan is its famous Plank Road in the Sky , known as the most dangerous hiking trail in the world.
This one-day Mount Huashan tour from Xian offers a classic itinerary to explore the mountain from North Peak to East, South, and West Peak , including two cable car rides. Combined with hiking, you can capture the most stunning panoramic views of the holy mountain and experience the most thrilling moment of all - walking the Plank Road in the Sky, an unforgettable and once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Itinerary at a Glance
Mount Huashan (1 Day)
Mount Hua (North Peak, East Peak, South Peak, West Peak), Plank Road in the Sky, Canglongling, Golden Lock Pass
Itinerary Day by Day
In this morning, your local guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel for a memorable trip to Mount Huashan , located 118km away and about 1.5-2 hours' drive. Mount Huashan, also known as Huashan Mountain, one of the five sacred mountains of Taoism and is famous for its steep and narrow paths, as well as its stunning natural scenery. It is home to five peaks and has long been considered the most precipitous mountain in China, with its sheer granite rock face, rugged cliffs, and deep valleys. Upon arrival, you will explore Mount Hua via the Cable Car - North Peak - Canglongling - Middle Peak - East Peak - Plank Road in the Sky - South Peak - West Peak - Cable Car route (the most classic route for 6-7 hours’ visit); or you can choose the route via the Cable Car - West Peak - South Peak - Plank Road in the Sky - East Peak - Middle Peak - West Peak - Cable Car route (4-5 hours, the leisure hiking route).
First, you will take a park bus from the tourist center to the foot of the North Peak of Mount Hua , which takes approximately 20 minutes. And then, take the cable car directly to the North Peak (about 10 minutes). At North Peak (also Cloud Terrace Peak) on the platform, you can have a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole mountain and other four peaks.
After enjoying the panoramic view from the North Peak, continue your hike along the famous "Dragon's Back" trail , which winds through the rocky terrain and offers stunning views of the green pines and white clouds of Mount Huashan. Later, you will reach the Golden Lock Pass , where you can admire the beautiful scenery of countless red ropes and colorful strings, representing layers of locks for love and peace, hanging on the iron chain on both sides of the path. From there, continue on to the Middle Peak and hike for about 40 minutes to reach the East Peak (the best spot for watching the sunrise). And, the most thrilling and challenging activity of the hike is yet to come - the "Plank Road in the Sky" . This section of the trail is considered the world's most dangerous hiking trail due to its knife-blade ridges, precipitous crags, and steep and narrow paths. (Note: It's important to note that walking through the Changkong Plank Road and completing the round trip takes about 0.5-1 hour. However, it's an optional activity, and it's not recommended for those who are not experienced hikers or are afraid of heights.)
Later, you will get to the South Peak which is the highest peak of Mount Huashan (2154.9 meters). It is a good spot to take photos with breathtaking scenery. After the happy time, you will hike for 30 minutes to the West Peak (also called Lotus Flower Peak). This place is the best spot with the most gorgeous scenery. Visit to see Cuiyun Palace and Fupi Stone, and listen to the legendary story about Chenxiang, the main character in the movie Lotus Lantern, who ripped Mount Huashan to save his mother, the Heavenly Goddess San Sheng Mu. Afterward, walk for approximately 20 minutes to the West Peak Cableway Station, where you'll take a cable car to descend the mountain. The cable car ride takes about 20 minutes and offers stunning views of the peaks and valleys of Mount Huashan, providing a perfect opportunity to enjoy the scenery one last time before leaving the mountain.
After the Mount Hua tour, you will be escorted back to your hotel in Xian.
Important Travel & Hiking Tips: 1) It is recommended to bring your own food and drinks while hiking as the supply on the mountain is limited. 2) The Plank Road in the Sky may be temporarily closed due to maintenance or extreme weather conditions. 3) Visitors may have to queue up for hours during peak season to enter the Plank Road. 4) If you are interested in experiencing this thrilling hike, it is advisable to depart from Xi'an early and plan your hiking route and pace accordingly.

Like the position of Rome in Italy, Kyoto in Japan and Athens in Greece, Xi’an (or Xian) is considered the cultural capital of China to some extent. With a history spanning more than 3,000 years, this city, the former national capital of 13 dynasties, has gone through many rulers and seen many historic events. Xi’an is the origin of the famous ancient Silk Route heading west and home to the Terracotta Warriors of the first emperor. Not a big fan of history? Take it easy, as the most populous city in Northwest China, modern Xi’an is absolutely the paradise for foodies and pop culture lovers.
Initially established as “China Xian Tour” in Xian, we are real Xian experts, and our Xian local guides know well how to create your unique and memorable Xian experience and authentic interaction with local life and culture.
