ea sports pga tour vs road to the masters

The Two New Golf Video Games Are Awesome, But One Is the Clear Winner

  • Author: Nick Menta

It’s been nearly a month since EA Sports PGA Tour made its long-awaited return during Masters week on April 7. That means gamers have had ample time to compare and contrast EA’s newest offering with the series that rose up in its eight-year absence: PGA Tour 2K . Having spent the last few weeks bouncing back and forth between both titles, I’m excited to offer this look at how EA Sports PGA Tour and PGA Tour 2K23 stack up.

EA’s producers and marketers spent considerable time hyping their game’s visual fidelity — and they delivered. As you’d justifiably expect from a brand-new, next-gen title that took nearly four years to develop, PGA Tour is far and away the best looking golf sim that’s ever been brought to market. Thanks to EA’s Frostbite engine, LIDAR scans, drone flyovers, Augusta National agronomic data, and old-fashioned conversations with course superintendents, the game’s more than 30 venues provide a genuine sense of place. Because each course has been engineered to play in a slightly different way — with St. Andrews sporting 100-yard rollouts and Harbour Town offering the chance to flag approach shots on spongy bermuda greens — each course has its own identity. These features shine through thanks to the game’s array of shot types, making a round at Bandon Dunes a markedly different experience than one at TPC Sawgrass.

Right now, 2K23 doesn't compete when it comes to how these courses look side by side.

It’s true that 2K’s real strength is in its vast library of user-generated courses, but that’s a credit to the users themselves. Judging studio against studio, the same officially licensed courses present in both games look nothing alike.

Winner: EA Sports PGA Tour

I’ve been playing golf video games dating back to Tiger Woods ’99 , and EA Sports PGA Tour is the first golf sim to ever make me think my way through a round.

PGA Tour features 20 different shot types, allowing players to chart their own way around a given track and to employ some creativity in the process. For years, golf sims have featured standard shots — drive, approach, pitch, chip, putt, usually a flop, maybe a punch — and most every shot in most every round has felt more or less the same. But PGA Tour finally makes a virtual round of golf feel like a real round of golf.

During one of my first rounds at Augusta National, my ball settled over the back of the green at the par-3 4th and I found myself actually thinking through the different ways to save par. Rather than aiming straight at the pin and employing as much spin as possible — as I would in any other golf game I’ve ever played — I opted to aim left, check a low runner into the slope, trundle the ball over the fringe, and watch it work its way sideways toward the hole. As nerdy and granular as this sounds, it’s revolutionary for a golf game and a massive step forward in terms of what it means to be a sim. That, and scorching a 290-yard stinger with a 2-iron is just plain fun.

If there’s a drawback, it’s that PGA Tour isn’t challenging enough. You can win a major in career mode on the hardest settings, with the AI scoring turned all the way up, well before you ever max out your player’s stats and abilities. In part, this is because you’re never really going to hit the ball very far offline. Odd as it sounds, PGA Tour is really a game about shot selection and course management; the execution is a little too baked in.

While 2K23 is a more straightforward experience with fewer options and less in the way of creativity, it will allow you to blow the ball off the planet with a poor swing. The perfect golf video game would likely be found in pairing EA’s shot types with 2K’s swing stick.

Short of that ever coming to pass, EA would benefit from making its own swing mechanic more sensitive and more subject to operator error. Considering PGA Tour ’s arcade mode still features the old-school, button-mashing mechanics players will remember from the Tiger games, it makes sense to greatly dial up the difficultly on the harder levels for those interested in an elite sim experience. Introducing wider misses, more scrambling, and more in the way of risk would make PGA Tour’s already significant gameplay advances even more meaningful.

Online Play

PGA Tour features daily, weekly and seasonal tournaments on varying difficulties from Arcade to Pro to Tour, giving players a range of competitive experiences. Then there’s head-to-head matchups and social outings, which support live play from up 16 users at once. You can actually see other players on the course and watch their shots in real time. This was a feature in EA’s Rory McIlroy title in 2015, and it returns eight years later, while 2K23 ’s ranked matchmaking mode still features just one player and one shot at a time.

That said, EA doesn’t offer anything in the way of 2K’s “Online Societies,” which allow groups of users, large or small, to run their own tournaments. You could set up a quick tournament or a short season with a few of your friends, or you could join TGCTours , an online hub for thousands of 2K users that organizes 18 weekly events, organized by settings and skill level. The site features daily leaderboards, a promotion and relegation system, and its own world ranking.

As it stands, EA’s initial online tournament experience is a little too detached. You play on your own, you post a score, and you earn some rewards; but it never really feels like you’re part of an event, playing against other users. In addition to giving users the opportunity to organize their own events, EA would be wise to consider recreating a TGC Tours-like experience on its own servers — grouping the wider community of players by flights. EA will never be able to offer the sheer quantity and variety of courses available available in 2K, but an online career arc would give players something to work toward and a reason to keep playing week after week.

Winner:  PGA Tour 2K23

Course Offerings

Those of your who have read these columns in the past know about my affinity for 2K’s custom course designer. The 2K series was born out of a niche game originally called “The Golf Club,” built solely around golf-course design. Over time, that game evolved, secured the PGA Tour license, changed its name, and eventually put Tiger Woods on the cover.

While 2K has gotten bigger and better over time as a golf sim, the course designer is still the primary reason to pick up this game and to keep playing. Individual users have produced a staggering number of real-world recreations and original designs.

Having spent a month with both games, I feel comfortable telling you — if you’re looking for a PGA Tour sim — to go play PGA Tour over 2K23 . And if you’re only comparing what the studios themselves have produced on a course-by-course basis, EA comes out ahead, thanks to superior graphics and gameplay.

But if you’re looking to play Pine Valley or Cypress Point or Royal County Down or whatever course you can think of — you’ll be shocked at what you can find on the game’s servers — you’ll still want 2K23 .

Winner: PGA Tour 2K23

Product roadmaps and future releases

Both PGA Tour and 2K23 release periodic updates with new courses, features and fixes.

2K23 recently added Payne’s Valley and Spyglass Hill to its official stable of courses and will soon debut Pinehurst No. 2.

PGA Tour , meanwhile, will roll out the year’s three remaining major venues — the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club (North), and The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool — in addition to Olympia Fields (North), site of the 2023 BMW Championship, and Marco Simone, home to 2023 Ryder Cup . The producers are also currently working a Ryder Cup gameplay experience, but they are tight-lipped on details.

As for what comes next? 2K has been working on a two-year product cycle, which would theoretically point to a potential PGA Tour 2K25 . EA’s producers, separately, took four years to get to this point and are not yet committing to a future timetable. For now, they’ll be updating this version of the game based on gameplay data and player feedback.

Big Picture

EA Sports PGA Tour has set a new bar for graphics and gameplay. The question is whether the game is deep enough and challenging enough to keep players around after they’ve bested career mode and maxed out their golfer’s RPG progression. My above suggestions related to EA creating its own online career arc and dialing up the difficulty would go a long way to extending this game’s ongoing replay value.

As for PGA Tour 2K, what was the only PGA Tour sim on the market now feels like its been lapped in relatively short order. Sooner or later, the graphics engine is going to need a serious upgrade to even approach what EA is offering.

More to the point, the HB studios team would be well served to focus on what it really means to be a golf sim. Too much of the ongoing development of this game is related to features that either alienate the game's most ardent fans - consumable golf balls - or don’t add gameplay value . Relationships with influencers  may be good for marketing and social media presence, but this doesn't matter much for the players at home who already own the game. Too often with PGA Tour 2K , it feels like the users are creating the content and value.

Hopefully, with EA back in the market and two Tour titles available, each studio will push the other to up its game.

EA Sports Road to the Masters Full Review

Video game review: ea sports road to the masters video game full review – xbox series x, introduction:.

If you’re looking for a golf video game that captures the feeling of playing on some of the world’s most iconic courses, then EA Sports Road to the Masters is definitely worth checking out. This game offers a unique combination of realistic graphics and challenging gameplay, making it a must-have for any golf enthusiast. Let’s take a look at what makes this game so great.

Click Here to View All YouTube Videos on Our Channel!

Realistic Graphics and Accurate Course Layouts:

One of the best features of EA Sports Road to the Masters is its realistic graphics and accurate course layouts. The courses are modeled after real-life courses such as Augusta National Golf Club, Royal Troon, Pine Valley Country Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, and more. The graphics are stunningly detailed and capture all of the nuances of each course in high definition. You feel like you’re playing on a real course! Overall there are more than 30 playable courses out of the box. These courses are listed below.

Full Course List:

Augusta National St Andrews Pebble Beach The Country Club Southern Hills TPC Sawgrass Wilmington Country Club TPC Boston TPC Southwind TPC Scottsdale Whistling Straits PGA West Quail Hollow Torrey Pines Kiawah Island Ocean Course Chambers Bay Banff Springs Wolf Creek Bay Hill Liberty National Harbour Town Riviera Country Club Tara Iti Top of the Rock Bandon Dunes Evian Resort Teeth of the Dog Wetlands (Fantasy Course) Lighthouse Point (Fantasy Course)

One community feature we would love to see down the road is community built courses where fellow gamers can create and replicate real to life courses using a course forge feature that is already popular amongst the golf simulator world. This is a feature that would open up a whole new world of course options for players keeping the entertainment value extremely high.

Challenging Gameplay & Multiple Modes:

The gameplay in EA Sports Road to the Masters is incredibly challenging and fun. There are multiple game modes including Career Mode where you can compete against AI opponents or play with friends across different tournaments and Online Multiplayer Mode where you can challenge up to 8 players from around the world. Each mode offers its own unique challenges that will keep you coming back for more. In addition EA Sports Road to the Masters also features all four major championships including the U.S. Open Championship, the PGA Championship, Masters Tournament and The Open Championship as well. Other game modes include Social which allows you to play against other gamers with minimal stakes and Challenges which is very similar to “Madden Moments” of games past where you relive key points throughout previous golf seasons and try to match what a particular golfer was able to accomplish in that situation. It is a very fun and entertaining mode which is actually one of my favorites of the game.

Wide Variety of Customization Options:

EA Sports Road to the Masters also offers a wide variety of customization options that let you tailor your gaming experience to your exact preferences. You can choose from different clubs and balls, all from real life equipment manufactures from major companies such as Titleist, Callaway, Ping, Mizuno and more. You can also customize your golfer’s appearance with clothes and accessories from companies such as Nike, Bad Birdie and others or even change your golfer’s skill level if you want an easier or harder challenge depending on what type of gameplay experience you prefer. This level of customization makes every game unique. In regards to keeping gameplay and shot options custom and unique you also have the option to hit multiple shot types based upon the club you select or the situation you are in. One example of this is when you are around the green you have the options to hit flop shots, high flop shots, spinner shots, pitch shots, runners and my overall favorite, the Texas wedge, where you can putt from off the green. This is a part of my actual golf game that I have gotten pretty good at since I never was the best pitcher of the golf ball and the putter was always the safest play for me.

Playable Golfers:

Right out of the gate there is a pretty impressive list of golfers to choose from in regards to playing options. You will notice many of the names from this list. I am also happy to see many names and faces of women golfers that you will also recognize as being some of the best golfers out there. One fact that did surprise me a bit is how many LIV golfers that actually made the cut on this list which is a possible indicator that this golfer list may have been selected a good time ago as I know backing LIV golfers with sponsorships or even on video games with the PGA Tour name is a lightning rod for controversy in today’s world, at least at the present moment. Hopefully we will continue to see more names added to this list or have the ability to community create golfers as well where we can get a solid strong list of golfers to keep the entertainment value going for a long time.

EA Sports Road to the Masters – Golfer List and Ratings:

Scottie Scheffler – 92 OVR Patrick Cantlay – 91 OVR Xander Schauffele – 91 OVR Tony Finau – 90 OVR Dustin Johnson – 90 OVR Nelly Korda – 90 OVR Sungjae Im – 89 OVR Juaquin Niemann – 89 OVR Hideki Matsuyama – 88 OVR Jordan Spieth – 88 OVR Lexi Thompson – 88 OVR Bryson DeChambeau – 87 OVR Jin Young Ko – 87 OVR Brooks Koepka – 87 OVR Daniella Kang – 86 OVR Jessica Korda – 86 OVR Jason Day – 84 OVR Harold Varner III – 84 OVR Bubba Watson – 82 OVR Abraham Ancer – 80 OVR Cameron Champ – 78 OVR Ian Poulter – 78 OVR

Conclusion:

EA Sports Road to the Masters is truly one of a kind when it comes to golf video games. The realistic graphics make it feel like you’re playing on real golf courses while the challenging gameplay keeps things interesting no matter how many times you play it. With its wide variety of customization options, every game feels unique and tailored specifically for each individual player. If you’re looking for an immersive golf experience, then this is definitely worth checking out. A few things we would like to see in the next version would be more community based options similar to the 2k Series where you could possibly immerse yourself around other golfers in a virtual type setting including mini games, stores and more. We would also like to see something similar to a franchise mode where you take your golfer not only through their career but also through things like endorsements, sponsorships and more as you continue to get more and more successful. With the way golf is set up where the golfer is literally their own brand there is a ton of room for creativity here to make a franchise mode very interesting in our book. Overall we were very happy with this version of EA Sports Road to the Masters and we gave the game 4.5 out of 5 on our Garage Golf Golfie Ranking System. With too much to list here, make sure to watch our full video review on the game including 3 holes of actual gameplay for your enjoyment.

EA Sports PGA Tour Editions: Deluxe & Standard Comparison

EA Sports PGA Tour will launch with two different editions, and there are some major differences between them.

Deluxe

It's fairly commonplace for publishers and developers to launch a game with separate editions in the modern era of video games. This gives players access to more content if they're willing to pay, but players who are not can simply buy the regular version of the game.

EA Sports PGA Tour is maintaining this trend, as the reboot of the popular golf video game series will release sporting two separate editions. As expected, one of these editions is the standard version of the game while the other is a more expensive and content-filled version. If you have been struggling trying to decide which one to buy, you can look below to see all of the differences between the two editions.

PGA Tour 2K21 in 60 Seconds

EA Sports PGA Tour Editions

The names of the two editions for EA Sports PGA Tour are the Standard Edition and the Deluxe Edition. The Standard Edition costs $70, which has become the norm for next-generation titles, and the Deluxe Edition costs $85. The difference in price isn't nearly as stark as editions of other games, which might be good news for players, as they don't have to pay that much extra for the Deluxe Edition.

However, if you want to see the content included in both editions before making a decision, take a look below.

EA Sports PGA Tour Standard Edition

  • THE PLAYERS Championship Gear (pre-order bonus)
  • The Grand Slam Gear Bundle (Gear items celebrating The Majors) (pre-order bonus)
  • Scotty Cameron Putter (pre-order bonus)

EA Sports PGA Tour Deluxe Edition

  • 3-Day Early Access (pre-order bonus)
  • Early Access to August National
  • Exclusive Early Access to Augusta National (pre-order bonus)
  • 1500 Premium PGA TOUR POINTS
  • PGA TOUR XP Bundle
  • The Masters Gear
  • Madden NFL 23 All Madden Edition PlayStation 5 & Xbox Series X|S from March 21, 2023

As you can see, the Deluxe Edition offers quite a bit more than the Standard Edition. Moreover, the Standard Edition's extra content only comes from pre-ordering EA Sports PGA Tour. If you pre-order the Deluxe Edition, you can access that content plus a variety of other benefits. However, the Deluxe Edition might not be worth it for every player.

Although, it might be worth it for those who do not yet own Madden 23 and have been looking to try it. The Deluxe Edition comes with a free code for Madden 23 on PC and the All Madden Edition of Madden 23 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

EA Sports PGA Tour launches on April 7, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

  • THE PLAYERS Championship and FedExCup Playoffs - The PLAYERS Championship and all three events of the FedExCup Playoffs will be in the game, and players can earn in-game FedExCup points in Career Mode for the opportunity to compete in the FedExCup Playoffs. As part of the Career mode, top golfers at the end of the year will be given the opportunity to win the FedExCup.
  • Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and The Amundi Evian Championship - In partnership with the LPGA, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR allows fans to compete at The Amundi Evian Championship, one of the LPGA Tour’s five major championships, and have the opportunity to play as several female athletes as well as create a female golfer in the overhauled Create-A-Player system. Players will also be able to participate in a series of LPGA-themed challenges and other events. Iona Stephen will be joining the EA commentary team as the first female on-course commentator in-game, bringing her experienced insights from both playing professionally and working in golf broadcasting.
  • True-to-Life Course Visuals - EA SPORTS PGA TOUR will also present the most realistic visuals in any golf game utilizing EA’s Frostbite™ engine. Using state-of-the-art equipment, including drone technology, helicopters and airplanes equipped with custom LiDAR scanners, and more to develop terrain maps, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR depicts courses exactly as they appear in real life. EA Sports PGA Tour vs. PGA Tour 2K23 Comparison

Now that we have two developers creating golf games again, we can compare the two: Between EA Sports and 2K, who made the better PGA Tour?

EA Sports PGA Tour vs PGA Tour 2K23 Comparison

Now that we have two developers creating golf games again, it's time to compare the two: Between EA Sports and 2K , who makes the better PGA Tour golf game?

Well, if you're just basing it on our review scores for both games, then you'd think that EA Sports PGA Tour is better than PGA Tour 2K23. While EA Sports PGA Tour objectively offers the higher quality package, there are a few distinctions between the two, and a couple of aspects that would make you pick one game over the other. There are a lot of pros and cons in picking one game, and they're different enough that you can have the best of both worlds and actually play both games. In this article, we take a look at what would be the reasons why you'd pick one game over the other.

Tale of the Tape: EA Sports PGA Tour vs. PGA Tour 2K23

Here are some statistics between the two that are relevant to this discussion:

Why Pick EA Sports PGA Tour?

EA Sports PGA Tour simply is made of better quality material. Although that doesn't make it perfect, it does have a better presentation and deeper, more strategic gameplay features. It also has a more exciting Career Mode, and has undoubtedly more famous courses as it has exclusive rights to the Masters courses, including the Augusta Masters course. It also boasts a more technologically-advanced backend system for its golf ball physics with the Shotlink Trackman, which, although not in your face, definitely is felt throughout the game. Here are the pros of picking EA Sports' golf game:

  • Better Career Mode
  • Deeper Gameplay
  • A lot of Quickplay Game Modes
  • Better Ball Physics
  • More Licensed Courses at launch
  • More Pros at launch
  • Better Graphics and Presentation
  • Has all four Majors

PGA Tour 2K23 also has good features that could make people consider it over EA's version. For starters, its controls are much more intuitive, and it has a more fun progression system with its unique skill tree. It also has way better player customization, better online features, and has crossovers with the other 2K games. It's also more intuitive and has many ways to help out newbies to get better at the game. Also, it has Topgolf and Course Designer! Here are the pros of picking PGA Tour 2K23:

  • Closer likeness for its pro player character models
  • Deeper player customization and more customization options
  • Has crossover guest pros like John Cena (WWE 2K23), Michael Jordan (NBA 2K23), and Stephen Curry (NBA 2K23)
  • More online gameplay features and game modes
  • Has Topgolf
  • Easier to get into
  • More interesting design in character skills and club customizations
  • More brand apparels
  • Better UI and Menus
  • Course Designer

And that's it for our comparison between the two games. Again, while EA Sports PGA Tour is technically the better game between the two, there are still good reasons why you'd like PGA Tour 2K23 more. For more on gaming, stick with ClutchPoints Gaming .

What impacts your shot?

There’s a reason players and caddies talk before their shot to best achieve success on the course so you’ll experience this in the pre-shot decisions you’ll have to make for a great shot. The challenge of your shot appears in a split between pre-shot decisions like club and shot types, with swing execution and placement based on course dynamics. This way you’ll be thinking more “golf” and less “golf swing” only.

A variety of factors like club and shot type all impact your shot but most of all, course dynamics and ball behavior like wind, altitude, terrain reactions, ball dribbling, and more will impact your shot. The full list of aspects that impact your shot are listed below

  • Slope of the terrain
  • Velocity & spin reduction from adverse terrain (like rough)
  • Golfer, club, and ball attributes
  • Power boost
  • Swing execution
  • In-flight Spin Control
  • Ball Reactions depending on terrain type and course Conditions
  • Ball dribbling

Online game modes support simultaneous play for up to 16 players and include the following game mopeds.

  • COMPETITIVE mode is ranked matchmaking to test your skills in numerous game types including 9 and 18 hole rounds.
  • SOCIAL mode allows you to play against similarly skilled players online in a more relaxed  unranked environment, offering multiple ways to play such as 9 and 18 hole rounds.
  • PRIVATE MATCH mode allows you to group up with your friends and play online together with full control of gameplay and round settings allowing you to fully customize your round.

Offline game modes:

  • If you just want to dive in quickly and play a round, QUICK PLAY is exactly what you’re looking for.  Quick play can also be played as local multiplayer (couch co-op) with up to 4 golfers offering varying ways to compete such as match play, skins, alternate shot rules, and more.
  • CAREER MODE is an offline mode that will be playable at launch (but will require an online connection). You’ll hear more about that during our career mode deep dive in the coming weeks.
  • CHALLENGES provides bite-sized experiences of various lengths. Ranging anywhere from a 4 hole challenge to recreating a golfer’s hot streak from a recent PGA Tour event, to single shot challenges where you, for example, are given 5 opportunities to hit a specific shot, challenges are short yet difficult moments for you to grow your skills and earn rewards. Within Challenges mode, there’s “PGA Coach Skill Center” which is a great way to learn more about game mechanics, shot types, and the game of golf in general.
  • TOURNAMENTS provides limited-time tournaments for players to go in by themselves and submit a score to a global leaderboard that other users are also submitting to. From here, the game gives you a final rank that is paid out in rank points based on finishing position. Most of it is stroke play, where the number of holes can be variable. Ongoing seasonal events throughout the pro golf calendar can also alter the tournaments for different settings on different courses.

How can I customize gameplay to my personal preferences?

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR features a variety of gameplay styles from arcade settings that assist you with a putting grid, power boost, and spin control to simulation settings that remove all assistance for a true-to-life gameplay experience.

Is there weather available in-game?

There are a variety of factors that impact gameplay on the course including altitude and wind. Courses in traditionally cloudy areas like The Old Course at St. Andrews will appear cloudy while sunny courses like The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island will appear bright. Other weather conditions will not affect gameplay or appear in-game.

Will there be a 3-click swing option in-game?

We know that the 3-click swing is important to the community and as a result of early community feedback we are planning to include this swing in an early title update after launch.

When will I hear more about EA SPORTS PGA TOUR?

We’ll be sharing more information about a variety of aspects of the game in the coming weeks leading up to launch. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram to stay updated with the latest announcements. Below is a roadmap for when you’ll learn more about the game!

EA Sports PGA Tour – Road to the Masters’ Challenges Game Mode

If you’re not a pro at swinging, putting, or reading the game situation, challenges game mode is where you’ll spend most of your hours practicing and getting used to Road to the Masters. The challenges are one of the game’s best features and will help set you up for a great experience.

There are different challenges of various lengths and difficulties that, once completed, will gain your XP points and rewards. They consist of historical moments in the PGA and LPGA over storied courses, tournaments, and real-life moments over the weekend’s action being played in real time.

These are the challenges:

  • Challenges (120 challenges)
  • Championship Moments (582 moments on initial download)
  • Sponsors (405 challenges)
  • Spotlights (25 challenges)
  • Coaching Academy (180 challenges)
  • Vault (locked and coming soon)
