Sri Lanka's Saraii Village

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Eco tourism and eco friendly destinations have become catch phrases in the tourism industry recently so it was no surprise to see the world's most popular travel rating site TripAdvisor put out a list of the 10 most extraordinary Treetop Hotels. It was a pleasant surprise however to find Sri Lanka's very own Saraii Village www.saraiivillage.com on the list - a relative newcomer to the field of sustainable tourism and green travel.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/InfoCenter-a_ctr.treehouseEN1

Being rated by TripAdvisor among ten exclusive treetop hotels worldwide gives Saraii more than one reason to celebrate its sustainable message. CEO and founder of Saraii Charitha Abeyratne said "We are grateful to TripAdvisor for considering us worthy enough for this remarkable rating. It feels good when you know you are being appreciated and recommended by your customers. This makes us very excited about the future of Saraii and the experience we offer our guests”

Saraii Village started as an idea few thought plausible, some laughed at and others dismissed. But one person defended it and that was Charitha Abeyratne the founder and CEO of Saraii Village who was involved in building an organic Agro-Forestry business with her husband Prasanna, which inspired her to create a sustainable tourism business with an agro/eco platform.

Top 5 Ecotourism Destinations in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a hugely popular tourist destination and a growing segment of its industry is devoting itself to ecotourism, the practice of travelling to remote, often threatened environments in order to support conservation efforts and learn about the local history and culture. Like every country around the world, Sri Lanka is facing great challenges when it comes to climate change and the loss of biodiversity, which is why ecotourism – part of one of the country’s largest industries – is incredibly valuable in the fight to conserve it.

What is ecotourism and why is it important?

Facilitated by responsible tour operators , ecotourism differs from the industry at large, as inherent to its existence are a handful of principles that uphold true sustainability and community welfare . Some of the principles include:

  • Direct economic benefits for local communities and conservation projects
  • Providing memorable, authentic learning experiences that engage visitors with local culture and ecology
  • Design and construction of facilities for the lowest possible impact on surroundings
  • Recognition of indigenous rights, and partnerships with indigenous communities

All of these principles help to ensure that visitors have a positive impact on the places they visit, rather than leaving it in an economic or environmental deficit. To travel to ecotourism destinations is to recognise that you are visiting a living, breathing human and ecological ecosystem, and make the conscious effort to support, protect and benefit them, through your consumer choice. In a fast-paced era where isolation and self-interest are all too easy, ecotourism is about slowing down , getting out into the wilderness and connecting with the ground beneath your feet.

Sri Lanka’s Ecotourism

Environmentally-friendly tourism is vital for the health of Sri Lanka’s natural biodiversity, as it cannot be forgotten that the country has lost a vast percentage of its natural habitats over the last fifty years. It is no coincidence that in this time tourism in Sri Lanka has grown at an incredible pace, with visitor numbers annually well into the millions – but, as is often the case, economic growth has led to environmental decline. However, there is another trend happening: since 2004, ecotourism has grown “globally three times faster than the tourism industry as a whole’’ .

And as luck would have it the island is home to a whole host of protected natural and cultural sites, including 9 UNESCO World Heritage Site s,   twenty six national parks , and a huge number of reserves. It is in these protected areas that a lot of ecotourism destinations are located, hidden in the forest and secluded up in the clouds.

With interest in the movement rising rapidly in Sri Lanka, ecotourism destinations are popping up all over the island. So if you wish to travel to this beautiful island, learn about its authentic culture from people who live it everyday, and take care of the earth as you do it, look no further. Below are four examples of must-visit ecotourism spots in Sri Lanka, and how they are helping the planet and its residents.

Rainforest Ecolodge

In the south of Sri Lanka, nestled in the Sinharaja Rainforest is the Rainforest Ecolodge . Sitting on the fringe of the Sinharaja UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this ecolodge is a great example of how ecotourism destinations are designed and built with the planet in mind from the very beginning. The whole experience of a stay here is designed to place you in the middle of the rainforest, surrounded by the bustling trees that encircle you. Opened in 2012, twenty chalets built from recycled shipping containers rise above the ground of the forest clearing, simultaneously providing you with a 360° view of the verdant canopy, and allowing the plant and animal life to continue to thrive below.

Finished and decorated with all-natural materials, every inch of this ecolodge has been designed to elevate the beauty of the forest and make nature the principal feature. Here you can enjoy locally-sourced meals in the restaurant that opens out to the mountain range – true alfresco dining, and spend your days trekking the forest floor to the cascading waterfalls and listen to the sweet birdsong rising from the treetops.

eco tourism in sri lanka

Gal Oya Lodge

This ecolodge is located in the eponymous national park, an untouched peaceful paradise in south-eastern Sri Lanka. The designers behind it have beautiful blended nature and luxury to bring you a truly unique experience out in the wilderness. Most notable is the lodge’s partnership with the neighbouring Vedda indigenous community . Thought to be the oldest human inhabitants of Sri Lanka, the Vedda people have long been threatened by many different forces, including private land acquisition, government forest reserve restrictions, and the civil war.

But, the team at Gal Oya Lodge works with the community to educate guests on indigenous life, and the Vedda chief leads tours through the jungle to show how his community connects spiritually to the environment and lives off the land. For over 2,000 years the land of Gal Oya National Park has been preserved and protected, and strolling the forest paths that line the lake is where you can watch wild elephants swimming between islands that are dotted over the water.

Gal Oya may be a last vestige of Sri Lanka’s truely untouched biodiversity and by staying at the Gal Oya Lodge, observing their conservation programs and meeting the Vedda community, you can help in the effort to conserve it.

Flameback Ecolodge

Located on the banks of the Weerawila Lake is the Flameback Ecolodge and its seven secluded tents that marry luxury and comfort with the great outdoors with ease – glamping never looked so good. An integral feature of what differentiates ecotourism from the wider industry is how these places plant roots in their local community and connect to their surroundings in meaningful ways. Ecotourism has been shown to decrease rural poverty , a systemic problem in Sri Lanka, and Flameback are a great example of how ecotourism aids in the fight against it.

Showcased on their website are the local individuals the lodge works with in providing guests with authentic experiences, from going on fishing trips with Sunil, learning palmyrah weaving by artisan craftswoman Disna, to going on treks with Kalana, the lodge’s inhouse ranger. The lodge is also connected to local farmers, buying directly from them, and guests are even welcomed into local homes for dinner. But perhaps most importantly, every employee of Flameback Ecolodge earns a dignified living wage, to help social mobility thrive within the local area. A stay at Flameback encompasses connection in every form; to yourself, to nature, and to culture and the community that lives and breathes it.

Dream Cliff Mountain Resort

Up in the clouds, near the famous Horton Plains National Park is Dream Cliff Mountain Resort . Secluded and serene, this little resort is perched on the mountainside and surrounded by green and luscious trees that extend out as far as the eye can see. This is a Sri Lanka not many tourists get to see, and while the country is facing many difficult effects of climate change Dream Cliff is an example of a natural, preserved ecosystem, ever more valuable in the fight to conserve Sri Lankan biodiversity.

Pristine hillsides stretch and bend out to the horizon, full of adventure and the calls of their wild inhabitants. Another key feature of ecotourism is the ability for the place you stay to build your environmental and cultural awareness of the local area, and this awareness is inherent to a stay at Dream Cliff. Watch the sunrise over the mountaintops as you slumber above the clouds, breathing in the tranquility that flows from the swaying grasses lining the sloping hills to the pillowy clouds that float past your bedroom window.

See true Sri Lankan beauty for yourself as you take part in the many activities on offer. Spend your days venturing to the waterfalls where you can bathe in the free-falling water, mountain biking over the hilltops and down to the villages, and spotting the wildlife that lives and thrives all around. It is environmentally-focused places such as Dream Cliff Mountain Resort, existing harmoniously rather than antagonistically with nature, that can be blueprints for the tourism industry’s vital evolution towards ecotourism.

Sri Lanka - Beragala - 1567 - Dreamcliff Mountain Resort

Sri Lanka is an undeniable biodiversity hotspot rich with colour and culture, with ecotourism becoming an ever-growing sector of the country’s tourism industry working to showcase it all. While the rise in global interest in ecotourism runs parallel to the increase in the threat of climate change, it also shows people’s willingness to change their habits to help the earth.

Ecotourism provides a shining light for the future of tourism, as well as an avenue through which people all over the world can help communities that have long been isolated, impoverished and downtrodden. As you can see, Sri Lanka provides the perfect landscape for so many different types of ecotourism, from its mountaintops to its coral reefs. In return, ecotourism provides Sri Lanka with much needed hope and a helping hand in the fight to save each and every one of them, as well as the opportunity for you to play your part – interested?

“Ecotourism provides any destination with a fantastic way to encourage environmental conservation, and with all the fantastic biodiversity Sri Lanka holds it really is the perfect location for it. The already prevalent growth of the sector in Sri Lanka shows a real hope for greener, more sustainable travel in the future, fundamentally more enriching for all involved.” Olivia de Quincey

Staying at an Eco Resort in Sri Lanka

The top 15 eco resorts in sri lanka , faq about eco resorts in sri lanka, final thoughts on the best eco resorts in sri lanka.

Sri Lanka

Some eco resorts are similar to high-end hotels, while others are more like simple camping spots for a more immersive natural experience. Typically, the more modern the amenities are, the higher the price, but it’s possible to find plenty of comfortable eco resorts if you’re traveling on a budget .

Sri Lanka isn’t a very big country, but there’s a lot of diversity between different regions. Most eco resorts are located in or close to popular tourist cities, but usually still have a secluded feel so you’re not disturbed by traffic noises or busy streets.

Eco hotels and eco resorts in Sri Lanka all feature some sort of sustainable measures, although each property varies on their level of eco-friendliness. Common things to see are using recycled building materials, solar power for an energy source, or gardens onsite.

Some eco resorts offer a more all-inclusive experience and will either have dining options onsite or include meals in the room price. Often other activities such as yoga and cooking classes, sports such as kayaking, or hiking and walking tours are either included or can be arranged.

What to Look for in an Eco Resort

Depending on your own comfort level and travel style, there are some things you’ll want to look out for when selecting an eco resort. If you’re after a true back-to-nature experience, then you’ll probably be happy with one of the more off-grid and simplistic camping options.

Keep in mind that Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, and as such bugs and high temperatures are to be expected. Most eco resorts will provide mosquito netting for bug protection, but not all places have AC or fans depending on how ‘unplugged’ they are. If AC is important to you, make sure you double check whether it’s available at the property you’re interested in.

Depending on how secluded an eco resort is, you may have to consider renting a car for transportation. Some eco resorts will offer airport shuttle service either included in the room price or for an additional charge to make transportation easier.

Since eco hotels range in size, it’s possible for solo travelers or large families to find an appropriate spot to stay. Keep in mind that not all eco resorts are child friendly, so be sure to check the age requirements if you’re traveling with young kids.

If you’re still trying to decide which eco resort in Sri Lanka is best for you, it’s a good idea to compare your options using search platforms like Booking.com, Airbnb, or Hostelworld. This way you can refine your search to fit your budget, travel dates, and specific preferences.

Sustainable Tourism in Sri Lanka: Initiatives and Ecotourism Places to Visit in Sri Lanka

2022 april updated.

Sustainable Tourism in Sri Lanka

As Sri Lanka tries to safeguard the environment, Sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka is an exception. It is one way to ensure the preservation of the tourist attraction places for now and the future.

Touring the world and meeting people from all walks of life is an important element of our global culture. It allows us to discover new places and cultures while learning about new traditions and activities. As a result of the numerous benefits it provides to travelers and communities, it is widely seen as a positive influence.

The tourism industry, on the other hand, is changing. Our awareness of the threat posed by climate change and our involvement in intensifying it is growing stronger with each year that passes. Our worldwide community is considering how we might reduce our negative influence on the environment across all businesses and sectors.

This is where the sustainable tourism concept is important, and the Sri Lanka government has taken this seriously, as we shall see on this page. Here we will explore what sustainable tourism is all about, the measures undertaken by the Sri Lanka government towards realizing this goal and ecotourism Tourism places to visit in Sri Lanka.

What is Sustainable Tourism?

As we dive into how Sri Lanka is adopting measures towards sustainable tourism, it is important first to understand what sustainable tourism is all about.

Sustainable tourism refers to tourism that generates more advantages than negative consequences, particularly in terms of the environment, the economy, and local communities, among other things. Tourism that is truly sustainable and responsible should improve the quality of life in the areas where people live and visit.

Offering hospitality and leisure services in a way that protects not just the environment but also local economies and societies is what sustainable tourism is all about, according to the World Tourism Organization.

All too frequently, when swarms of tourists descend on a region, the implications for the local communities are catastrophic. This happens as a result of either carelessness or the inherent nature of the sector. Sustainable tourism guarantees that tourist sites preserve their natural charm and that all living things, including trees and animals and humans, are not harmed while also allowing tourists to enjoy and experience the place.

Sustainable tourism necessitates an investment of time, effort, and money. However, if done right, it is unquestionably worthwhile. Unorganized "green" projects are implemented in many places with no discernible results.

In recent years, however, legitimate, sustainable tourism initiatives have improved the appeal of many destinations, and more and more sophisticated travelers are becoming conscious of their environmental footprints.

Not every location must be environmentally friendly or promote ecotourism. Sustainable tourism can be practiced in a variety of ways in any destination.

The Pillars of Sustainable Tourism

There are three pillars of sustainable tourism; environmental sustainability, social sustainability and economic sustainability. Environmental sustainability is all about protecting the environment. Environmental sustainability is achieved through initiatives such as waste reduction, the elimination of single-use plastics, and the reduction of the overall carbon footprint.

The protection of natural environments such as woods and waterways and the preservation of artificial environmental artifacts such as historic structures, architecture, and artworks are essential for the survival of humanity.

Social sustainability is a little more difficult to describe than environmental sustainability. Still, at its core, it is the concept of conducting your business in the best interests of your employees, stakeholders, partners, and the communities in which you conduct your business.

Economic sustainability is based on financial profitability, but this should not come at the expense of the other two pillars of sustainability (environmental and social). While it's obvious that a company's profitability is essential to its long-term viability, the pursuit of profit must never come at the expense of environmental or social issues.

Sustainable Tourism in Sri Lanka

Sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka is a long-term goal. For Sri Lanka to achieve a positive overall balance in environmental, sociocultural, economic, and experiential consequences for tourists and residents, sustainable tourism must be promoted throughout the country.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority considers sustainability to be a critical driver in preserving and conserving the island's outstanding natural and cultural heritage to ensure that the destination remains a popular tourist destination for Sri Lankans and visitors now and in the future. SLTDA has mandated the authority to construct sustainable destinations, which the organization has given top priority.

Although the COVID-19 global pandemic has wreaked havoc on the global travel and tourism business, it has also presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reset the sector's priorities.

Sri Lanka Tourism has taken advantage of this opportunity. It is charting a new environmentally-friendly path forward for the sector to navigate the future in an environmentally-friendly manner.

Sustainable tourism is essential for preserving natural, cultural, and environmental resources, all of which are vital to the long-term viability of Sri Lanka's tourism sector. If these important resources are not conserved, Sri Lanka may see a decrease in the number of tourists visiting the country.

Sustainable tourism is somewhat more to be requested by tourists in the future, particularly following the conclusion of COVID-19, and the National Sustainable Tourism Certification (NSTC) program has been established to address this demand.

In order to remain competitive in the global marketplace, it is essential that we adapt to the demands of tourists. Sustainable tourism is no longer an option; instead, it is required.

Sri Lanka is a small island that is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Its tourism product is strongly reliant on natural resources, making it critical to develop the business sustainably.

Sustainable Tourism Practices in Sri Lanka

In supporting sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka has taken several steps. The first step undertaken towards achieving sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka is that Sri Lanka became a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

The move is meant to show the willingness and strengthen their position towards achieving the long term goal of sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka. Other initiatives are also underway, such as the plans to develop Sigiriya as the first Sustainable Destination. The draft is already drafted and will be shared with the Central Cultural Fund (CCF).

Furthermore, due to the high degree of biodiversity in the Yala Palatupana Tourism Zone, it is planned to be raised to the status of a Protected Conservancy Area. In addition, new criteria are being developed to ensure that new tourism projects meet sustainability standards, such as those requiring renewable energy, recycling, and zero single-use plastic.

When it comes to achieving sustainability targets in the future, boutique hotels that are presently in business will need to set a deadline to meet. Sri Lanka Tourism has taken steps to meet the aims of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

MEPA (Marine Environment Protection Authority) collaborates with Sri Lanka Tourism to protect the marine environment to ensure a healthy coastal and ocean environment for future generations. This collaboration has been put on hold due to the disaster involving the X-Press Pearl ship.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, tourism accounted for at least 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, making it an urgent requirement. As Millennial and Generation Z tourists become more concerned about their carbon footprint, they look for more environmentally-friendly destinations. In the three years between 2015 and 2020, the TUI Group reported an 84 per cent increase in the number of clients who chose "greener and fairer" vacation packages. The TUI Group is the world's largest leisure, travel, and tourism company, operating its travel agencies, hotels, airlines, retail shops, and cruise ships.

As global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution threaten the future of travel, Sri Lanka Tourism has been thinking about how local challenges might be managed to protect the global sector.

Authorities realize that encouraging sustainable tourism is critical to increasing the destination's competitiveness and positively positioning Sri Lanka as a tourism destination of choice for visitors.

Ecotourism Tourism in Sri Lanka

In order to maintain the health of Sri Lanka's natural biodiversity, environmentally friendly tourism is essential. It should not be overlooked that the country has lost a significant part of its natural habitats over the last fifty years.

Tourism in Sri Lanka has expanded at an astounding rate over this period, with visitor numbers annually well into the millions. It is no coincidence. Yet, as is often the case, economic expansion has resulted in environmental degradation.

Nevertheless, another trend is underway: ecotourism has expanded "globally three times faster than the tourism industry as a whole" since 2004, according to the World Ecotourism Organization.

In addition, as fate would have it, the island is home to an abundance of protected natural and cultural monuments, including nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, twenty-six national parks, and a large number of protected wildlife reserves.

Many ecotourism locations can be found within these protected regions, buried deep within the forest or high in the skies. Ecotourism in Sri Lanka is a significant trend in Sri Lanka because most people would like to enjoy the surroundings in the most natural way possible; for example, they want to swim in pristine waters or go through unknown terrain.

Many rainforests are included on the list of ecotourism destinations to visit. Aside from beautiful beaches, little islands are also well-known among tourists. In terms of wildlife, camping at night and getting a closer look at animals are the most important aspects of the experience.

Hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing, and kayaking are examples of ecotourism activities that provide the greatest possible exposure to nature while requiring the least infrastructure.

When traveling, there are several restrictions to obey. For example, littering is strictly prohibited, as is vandalizing any property or feeding wild animals. In addition, the rainforests are kept as close to their natural state as is humanly possible. When visiting Sri Lanka, ecotourism is the next best thing to do because it allows you to be as close to nature as you possibly can.

Top Ecotourism Destinations in Sri Lanka

When it comes to tourism, Sri Lanka ranks high on the list, and a rising section of the economy is devoting itself to ecotourism. Ecotourism is the practice of traveling to distant, frequently threatened settings to support conservation efforts and learn about the local history and culture.

Like every other country on the planet, Sri Lanka is confronted with significant challenges related to climate change and biodiversity loss. As a result, ecotourism, a significant component of one of the country's largest industries, is extremely valuable in the fight to conserve biodiversity.

Due to the significant increase in interest in the environmental movement in Sri Lanka, ecotourism attractions are springing up all across the island. So, if you want to come to this beautiful island, learn about its true culture from people who live it daily, and do so while also caring for the environment, look no further than this destination.

The following are some examples of must-see ecotourism destinations in Sri Lanka and how they benefit the earth and its inhabitants.

Rainforest Ecolodge

Forest Ecolodge is located in the Sinharaja Rainforest in the country's south, close to the border with India. This ecolodge, located on the outskirts of the Sinharaja UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is an excellent example of how ecotourism destinations are planned and constructed with the environment in mind from the beginning.

The entire experience of being here is designed to put you right in the center of the rainforest, surrounded by the lively trees that surround you and immerse you in nature.

Twenty chalets constructed from recycled shipping containers were raised above the ground of a forest clearing in 2012, giving you a 360-degree view of the verdant canopy while allowing the plant and animal life below to continue to flourish.

Every inch of this ecolodge, which has been finished and decorated entirely with natural materials, has been created to enhance the beauty of the forest and make nature the property's main attraction.

You can spend your days trekking through the forest floor to the cascading waterfalls and listening to the sweet birdsong rising from the treetops while enjoying locally sourced meals in the restaurant that opens out to the mountain range – true alfresco dining – and spending your nights in the lodge.

Gal Oya Lodge

This ecolodge is located within the namesake national park, a pristine and serene haven in Sri Lanka's south-eastern region. A wonderful blend of nature and luxury has been created by the designers behind it, resulting in a unique experience out in the wilderness.

The most remarkable aspect of the lodge is the relationship with the Vedda indigenous community in the surrounding area. They are believed to be Sri Lanka's first human settlers and have long been threatened by various factors, including private property acquisition and government forest reserve limits. The country's civil strife has also threatened the Vedda people.

However, the personnel at Gal Oya Lodge collaborates with the community to educate guests about indigenous culture, and the Vedda chief leads tours into the jungle to demonstrate how his tribe is spiritually connected to nature and relies on the soil for its livelihood.

For more than 2,000 years, the area of Gal Oya National Park has been kept and safeguarded, and while wandering along the woodland paths that flank the lake, you can see wild elephants swimming between the islands that dot the water's surface.

By staying at the Gal Oya Lodge, learning about their conservation projects, and meeting members of the Vedda community, you can contribute to the effort to preserve Sri Lanka's only remaining patch of really pristine wildlife.

Flameback Ecolodge

The Flameback Ecolodge, located on the banks of the Weerawila Lake, offers seven secluded tents that seamlessly blend elegance and comfort with the great outdoors — glamping has never looked so wonderful.

Ecotourism differs from the rest of the tourism business in that it encourages visitors to establish roots in their local communities and form meaningful connections with their surroundings. This is a key characteristic of what distinguishes ecotourism from the rest of the industry.

Rural poverty, which is a systemic problem in Sri Lanka, has been reduced by ecotourism, and the Flameback Mountains are a perfect illustration of how ecotourism can aid in the fight against it.

The lodge collaborates with local individuals to provide guests with authentic experiences featured on their website, from going on fishing trips with Sunil to learning palmyrah weaving from artisan craftswoman Disna to going on treks with Kalana, the lodge's in-house ranger, to providing guests with authentic experiences.

The lodge also maintains a relationship with local farmers, purchasing directly from them, and visitors are even invited to dine at their houses for dinner. But, probably most crucially, every employee of Flameback Ecolodge earns a decent living wage, contributing to the advancement of social mobility in the surrounding community.

When you stay at Flameback, you will experience connection in every sense of the word: connection with yourself, the environment, culture, and the community that lives and breathes it.

Dream Cliff Mountain Resort

Dream Cliff Mountain Resort is high in the sky, close to the famed Horton Plains National Park. Perched high on a mountaintop and surrounded by lush greenery as far as the eye can view. It is a small resort but offers peace and tranquility to all who visit.

As seen by few tourists in Sri Lanka, and when the country is dealing with the many difficult effects of climate change, Dream Cliff is an example of a natural, preserved ecosystem that is becoming increasingly valuable in the fight to conserve Sri Lankan biodiversity.

Dream Cliff is a natural, preserved ecosystem that is becoming increasingly valuable in the fight to conserve Sri Lankan biodiversity.

Extending to the horizon, the hillsides are alive with the sounds of wild animals and the cries of adventurers seeking adventure. Developing your environmental and cultural knowledge of the local area while on vacation is another important aspect of ecotourism. A stay at Dream Cliff will help you develop these awareness skills.

Take in the peacefulness that runs from the swaying grasses lining the sloping hills to the pillowy clouds that drift past your bedroom window as you sleep above the clouds. Watch the sunrise over the mountaintops as you rest above the clouds.

As you participate in the many activities on offer, you will be able to witness firsthand the true beauty of Sri Lanka. Spend your days hiking to waterfalls where you can take a refreshing bath in the free-falling water, mountain biking across the hilltops and down to the villages, and viewing the wildlife that exists and thrives throughout the area.

Environmentally conscious places, such as Dream Cliff Mountain Resort which exists in harmony with nature rather than in opposition to it, has the potential to serve as models for the tourism industry's necessary transition to an ecotourism model.

The author’s son, Seb, with the children in Classroom in the Wild

Jungles, jackfruit and community tourism: this is Sri Lanka at its best

Our author and her family are wowed by an ethical travel break, meeting local schoolchildren and visiting eco resorts set in verdant countryside and by pristine beaches

T here is a moment of absolute stillness – the battered football whizzing through the air, all eyes following it, before it crashes down into the glass case and tiny gasps escape little mouths. Thankfully, it rolls off, leaving the glass and the encased Buddha statue unharmed.

We are playing football on a dusty, sunbaked escarpment with a group of farm children, and amid the excitement I almost destroy the village’s religious relic. But the game goes on, with limbs flying everywhere, toes (mine) getting stamped on and the football continuing to fly skywards.

We are here to meet some of the 30 or so children who are part of Classroom in the Wild, a community outreach project initiated in 2014 by Chamintha and Rajindra Jayasinghe, founders of Ayu in the Wild Holidays, to create opportunities for children in Sri Lanka’s most disconnected communities.

For these children, a lack of access to learning English has stifled their progress, and for many of them joining their parents to work the land will be their only viable option. We meet them at their school – a hut accessed by a single road through rice paddy fields, around four miles from the world heritage site of Sigiriya. It is a wild, inaccessible area that takes up to four buses and a tuk-tuk ride to reach, which has resulted in some teachers refusing to come.

Seb in the school.

The journey is long, even though we are staying fairly close, but the rewards are great and it leads to one of the most enriching experiences we have on our family holiday. There is a lot of giggling and shyness at first, even from our own children (Seb, eight, and Jemima, four), but there is an opportunity to play some word games, and then the ice is well and truly broken when we start to play football.

There are bursts of conversation in between matches and we learn that the children are mainly from families who farm vegetables and work in the paddy fields; that they have been learning how to cohabit in these rural surroundings with elephants (the children live in a community where human-elephant conflict is rife); and that their lessons continued during the pandemic – each Saturday morning they logged into just one smartphone for an online lesson.

As we leave, Sithumi, 14, stands up in front of the class and in pristine English tells us how much they have enjoyed the day, and asks us to come back again.

Seb during an elephant safari.

Chamintha first came across the children when she was travelling with her husband and saw them playing cricket with a deflated football. She says the visit to the school remains one of their most sought-after experiences, and it is easy to understand the reasons – it gives us an opportunity to really connect with a local community and gain an insight into their lives in a way that would be almost impossible in the confines of a hotel or visiting tourist attractions. In addition to supporting the weekly spoken English classes by fully funding the teacher and lesson planning, Ayu in the Wild employs a naturalist who regularly hosts discussions between travellers to develop the children’s vocabulary and confidence in speaking with foreigners.

“We believe tourism must be a catalyst in inclusive development. Classroom in the Wild connects disconnected rural communities,” says Chamintha.

“Prior to Covid-19, Sri Lanka was heading towards over-tourism. This project showcases the value of small-scale immersive tourism and the emotional and intellectual impact on guests. We believe kids can be the greatest advocates of change,” she adds.

Jemima with Ayu in the Wild guide, Dhanu, during the elephant safari

The ethos of Ayu in the Wild Holidays is community-based tourism, and from the moment we land at Colombo airport and meet our guide, Dhanu, we know that this will be a trip where we will see a different Sri Lanka, and why at this moment that is more important than ever. We arrive when it is relatively peaceful and calm, but the country is in turmoil, having defaulted on its debts for the first time in its history, as it struggles with a devastating economic and political crisis . This is against the backdrop of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, the 2019 easter bombings and the pandemic, all of which ravaged the country’s tourism industry.

We still decide to travel, and arrive in the early hours of the morning in late May 2022. Heavy rain batters the roof of the van as we veer off the main road and down what appears to be a dirt track. On the other side is the veranda of the Wallawwa , a restored 200-year-old manor house between Negombo and Colombo. We are handed freshly squeezed lychee juice and immediately forget any trepidation we’d felt just hours earlier as we receive the warmest of welcomes, with everyone telling us how grateful they are that tourists are still coming to the country.

The Wallaww is a 200-year-old manor house.

“Tourism is as vital to the island’s economy as cricket is to the island’s spirit,” says Chamintha.

“In December last year, tourism bounced back phenomenally with the end of the pandemic, and that’s the kind of welcome that will greet a visitor, with hard-working guides, drivers, hosts and local vendors still smiling – still welcoming, despite reeling from the spiralling cost of living and a loss of income. We’re a pretty resilient bunch,” she adds.

At the Wallawwa we see this resilience first-hand, with the staff making our stay comfortable despite the national unrest. There is a beautifully kept jungle pool hidden among mango and weeping fig trees, and the hotel grows much of its produce in its vegetable garden, with water for the guests’ showers pumped from the garden’s wells, and solar power in use.

Seb and Jemima at the Uga Bay hotel.

On our first evening, amid a din of insects and birds, the children play boules on the green, and we tuck into black pork and sweet, sticky prawns; colourful curries of jackfruit and aubergine; fragrant dhal and cheesecake with a rosewater and tamarind sorbet. The food is wonderful. After dinner, Neil, the manager, teaches us how to play carrom, a tabletop game in which players flick disks to the corners of the board. “Focus,” he says, just before my husband whacks the small wooden disk, sending it ping-ponging across the cedar-wood board, missing its target.

We travel around Sri Lanka in the company of our guide Dhanu and driver Eddie – who combine enthusiasm, knowledge and such warmth towards our children that they feel like family by the end of the trip.

A bedroom in one of the Living Heritage Koslanda’s forest pavilions.

What was the biggest adrenaline hit of the holiday was a constant source of debate: was it the wind-buffeted dawn ascent up Sigiriya rock; giant fruit bats hanging from the trees in Kandy; the sustainable wild elephant safari; snorkelling along a coral reef in bath-water warm seas; or a mountain path view of a crested serpent eagle taking off and cruising the thermals across the tea-field valleys below?

Between the jaw-dropping encounters with nature we take a breath with a four-day stop at the Uga Bay hotel in Pasikuda (studios from £130 a night) – on the island’s east coast – and have a holiday within a holiday. The hotel is bigger than other places we have stayed at, with its rooms arranged in an arc facing the pristine, white beach, but there is an underlying commitment to the local environment and their communities. Water-filling stations are placed around the property to reduce plastic waste; solar panels are used; the hotel is moving towards only working with ethical whale-watching companies that responsibly approach whales and dolphins; and it has announced a commitment towards bringing more women into its workforce.

A waterfall at Living Heritage Koslanda.

There is a similar ethos at the final stop on our trip at Living Heritage Koslanda (forest pavilion cottages from £195 a night), a hotel in a wooded valley with its own waterfall and kitchen gardens, which employs mainly local people, most of whom are female. The hotel was initially the vision of Sri Lankan film director Manik Sandrasagara, who dreamed of creating an eco-resort in “one of the most sacred and secret places on Planet Earth” while protecting its natural biodiversity. The hotel was completed by his wife Lucy in 2012, four years after his death.

“It has been an incredibly difficult few years, but despite everything we continued with Manik’s dream, and what we have is something completely unique, says Lucy. “It is a place like no other.”

In the space of two weeks, we feel we’ve packed in about four different, breathtaking holidays in their own individual climates. We leave already plotting which bits we would want to see more of on our return, and it has alerted us to the importance of travelling with tour companies who have community at the forefront, reinforcing a sense of cultural identity and providing opportunities for sustainable development.

Ecotourism in Sri Lanka is the new trend. Sri Lanka is loved and adored by the world for its natural resources. It’s also dubbed a natural paradise for the very same reason. However, it‘s a challenge to keep the environment safe from human errors. Sri Lanka has taken several steps to preserve the environment. Sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka is an exception to the country’s efforts to protect the environment. It is one method of ensuring the preservation of tourist attractions for the present and future.

eco tourism in sri lanka

Why ecotourism in Sri Lanka?

The understanding of the threat presented by climate change, as well as the country’s role in accelerating it, grows stronger with each passing year. Our global community is contemplating how we may lessen our negative impact on the environment across all industries and sectors. That’s when the concept of ecotourism in Sri Lanka comes into the discussion. We will discuss ecotourism initiatives in Sri Lanka while also looking into the benefits, importance, and challenges faced by ecotourism.

Explaining ecotourism  in Sri Lanka

Let’s start by discussing what ecotourism is and how to define it. So, what exactly is ecotourism? The definition of ecotourism from the International Ecotourism Society goes as follows: ethical travel to natural areas that conserve the environment, uphold the well-being of the local people, and involve education and interpretation. Ecotourism, in its most basic form, is all about active nature tourism.

It is a low-impact, small-scale style of travel that aims to protect and maintain the natural world by ensuring that biodiversity, ecosystems, and local communities are preserved and undisturbed. It’s a gratifying and informative event that expands our cultural consciousness and knowledge of the environment.

Ecotourism locations in Sri Lanka are typically fragile, pristine, and well-preserved. Consider islands, intensely biodiverse areas, and historical sites. This mode of transportation was first launched in the 1970s, but it did not take off until the end of the 1980s. Ecotourism is becoming increasingly popular as a result of the growing trend of people prioritizing greener choices.

What’s the importance of ecotourism in Sri Lanka?

The goal of ecotourism in Sri Lanka is to preserve and promote respect for some of the most beautiful ecosystems on the planet. Ecotourism is a sustainable mode of transportation. It encourages visitors to help conserve the environment and contribute to local communities on a much deeper level than casual visitors. This hands-on approach is critical to educating visitors about some of the challenges that these areas confront, which can only be a good thing!

Overtourism is a serious problem for a multitude of reasons. It can impose a strain on a destination’s resources and population, preventing them from efficiently protecting their most vulnerable assets. Unfortunately, when a large number of tourists visit a location, the consequences for the local communities are usually disastrous. Why does this happen? Well, it’s either due to their carelessness, the inherent nature of the sector, or both.

Nobody wants to go to a beach that is littered with plastic. Ecotourism attractions prioritize environmental welfare in order to provide outstanding long-term service.

What are the advantages of ecotourism?

We’ve discussed the value of ecotourism in Sri Lanka and how it helps reduce negative impacts. Now let’s look at why we need it. There are numerous benefits that can be expected through ecotourism, such as:

1. Provides knowledge to people

As we discussed, ecotourism raises awareness about environmental protection. Other than that, it can also inspire genuine change. It only takes one person to spread the word about ecotourism and conservation activities for more people to become aware, make changes at home, and persuade legislators to make a genuine impact. Knowledge is essential to making positive changes.

2. Helps create pleasant surroundings

Sri Lanka is already beautiful ; however, some of its corners are not very pleasant due to humans polluting them. Ecotourism in Sri Lanka ensures that the island country stays beautiful for the long term. It protects and preserves fragile ecosystems so they can be enjoyed for generations to come. By choosing to support ecotourism, you can use your travels to save one of nature’s paradises.

3. Helpful to local communities and conservation work

Ecotourism promotes the local economy by directing funds to small businesses and communities rather than giant firms that cut corners to save money. By supporting ecotourism vacations, you get the ability to contribute back to the places you visit while also assisting in the sustainability of local residents’ lives.

4. Ecotourism in Sri Lanka Maximizes the quality of travel

Ecotourism provides enriching experiences, which is what travel should be about. You gain a far deeper cultural understanding of a destination as well as the opportunity to truly appreciate its natural beauty. That is how travel should be. Ecotourism is beneficial to more than just the environment. It also benefits our personal development and mental wellness .

It enables us to contact nature in a respectful and engaging manner, which has numerous health benefits. According to studies, natural settings are also important for our psychological wellness. To put it another way, ecotourism provides a sense of happiness.

Ecotourism in Sri Lanka is further explained

Environmentally responsible tourism is critical to the health of Sri Lanka’s natural biodiversity. It should not be forgotten that during the previous fifty years, the country has lost a large portion of its natural environment. Over this time, tourism in Sri Lanka has grown at an incredible rate, with tourist numbers reaching the millions each year.

It’s not a coincidence. However, as is frequently the case, economic growth has resulted in environmental damage. Nonetheless, according to the World Ecotourism Organization, ecotourism has grown “globally three times faster than the tourism industry as a whole” since 2004.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka

The island is home to a plethora of protected natural and cultural monuments, including nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites , 26 national parks , and a vast number of protected animal reserves. Many ecotourism destinations can be located within these protected areas, whether they are deep within the forest or high in the sky.

Ecotourism is a huge trend in Sri Lanka since most people prefer to appreciate their surroundings in the most natural way possible, such as by swimming in pure waterways or hiking through unexplored terrain.

Preserving wildlife with ecotoourism in Sri Lanka

Aside from magnificent beaches , little islands are popular among tourists. The most crucial components of the wildlife experience are camping at night and getting a close look at animals. Mountain climbing, hiking , and kayaking are some ecotourism activities that get you close to nature without much infrastructure.

There are various rules to follow when traveling. Littering, for example, is severely prohibited, as is vandalism of any kind and feeding wild animals. Furthermore, the rainforests are kept as close to their natural state as possible. Ecotourism is the next best thing to do when visiting Sri Lanka because it allows you to get as close to nature as possible.

The potential for ecotourism in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a lot of potential for ecotourism , which may be profitable if the essential services and infrastructure are established. Sri Lankan cultural sites such as Anuradhapura , Polonnaruwa , Kandy , Sigirya , and Galle , among others, are one-of-a-kind cultural riches with significant potential when linked to ecotourism in Sri Lanka .

Numerous scientists’ professional interests have drawn them to Sri Lanka’s unique ecology and biological and cultural riches. Over the last few decades, they have undertaken field studies in ecology, zoology, botany, sociology, and anthropology.

The best ecotourism activities in Sri Lanka

Some of the most important ecotourism activities in Sri Lanka include wildlife spotting , bird watching, camping , trekking, hiking , archaeology, adventure tourism , nature photography tours , and nature painting courses.

What are the ecotourism initiatives in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has taken several ecotourism initiatives to preserve the island country. Due to its rich biodiversity, the Yala Palatupana Tourism Zone is being sought for status as a Protected Conservancy Area.

Furthermore, new criteria for ensuring that new tourism projects fulfill sustainability standards, such as those requiring renewable energy, recycling, and zero single-use plastic, are being established.

UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030

When it comes to meeting future sustainability standards, boutique hotels that are currently in operation will need to set a timeframe. Sri Lanka Tourism has taken initiatives to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

MEPA (Marine Environment Protection Authority) works with Sri Lanka Tourism to safeguard the marine environment so that future generations can enjoy a healthy coastline and ocean environment. Because of the X-Press Pearl ship accident, this collaboration has been halted.

Tourism and greenhouse gas emissions

Tourism accounted for at least 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, making it an urgent demand. It’s clear that more and more people, especially Millennial and Gen-Z travelers, are becoming increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint. As a result, they seek out more environmentally friendly destinations when they travel.

TUI Group reported an 84% increase in the number of clients who chose “greener and fairer” vacation packages between 2015 and 2020. TUI Group operates travel agencies, hotels, airlines, retail stores, and cruise ships and is the world’s largest leisure, travel, and tourism firm.

As major global issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution increasingly threaten the present and future of travel, Sri Lanka Tourism has been considering ways to handle local challenges to safeguard the global sector.

Challenges with ecotourism in Sri Lanka

There are several challenges that need to be addressed when discussing ecotourism initiatives in Sri Lanka. One of the significant failures is that many individuals and organizations are more interested in making money from the tourism sector than in saving the environment. This human greed, which values profit over the environment, leads to numerous downsides to ecotourism, such as:

  • Communities are being evicted in gross violation of their rights.
  • Forests are being cut to build hotels and resorts.
  • Landscape disruptions caused by soil erosion owing to excessive mobility
  • Tourists are putting pressure on already scarce resources such as food, water, energy, and so on.

Wrapping up

In many nations, ecotourism in Sri Lanka is a popular and increasingly appealing component of tourism. As we discussed, Sri Lanka has undertaken several ecotourism initiatives to preserve the island country’s nature. However, there is still a long way to go in this regard. Sri Lanka has yet to develop and promote this form of tourism in the mainstream. It can help to maintain and manage Sri Lanka’s protected areas system as well as the central economy.

The fact that Sri Lanka has easy access to a variety of ecosystems in a short period of time is a major advantage. Sri Lanka is a small country, but it contains a varied range of easily accessible habitats that are only two to four hours apart by car. As a result, tourists have the chance to quickly and easily visit numerous distinct habitats, observe more wildlife, and immerse themselves in nature.

Our Service Values

Exclusive  experiences it’s all about what you will be doing. .

We take pride in offering the exclusive and unique experiences going beyond just the tourist highlights. We believe that no two persons on this earth could be the same, so therefore no holiday created should be the same too. With our unparalleled access to all the hidden corners, we don't merely create holidays, we design experiences that money can’t buy.

Genuine Encounters It’s all about whom you are meeting.

Our tours are designed to grant you an intimate peak into the country and meeting real local people. With our special relationships cultivated over the years, our tours offer access into villages and homes to provide truly unique perspectives. This is something we are really specialized in. You do things together, share a meal or take part in a religious ritual; you become their guest but not a paid tourist.

Spaces with Character It’s about where you are staying.

Our handpicked accommodations are way different to large chain hotels with conventional star ratings. We offers small properties with quality, character, ambiance and run by passionate people. The range does not limit to “hotels” and goes into Tented Camps, Lodges, Home Stays, Colonial Bungalows, Luxury Boutique Properties as well as Tree Houses that have won multiple awards and plaudits.

Passionate Sustainability It’s about how we do things.

We believe that the sustainability and conservation approach in tourism is not merely an option but a way of life. While offering you unique, unconventional experiences and encounters, we strive to stay conscious of the sustainability of our habitat, people and culture. You wouldn’t find the Elephant Orphanage, animal rides or shows, or any other experiences that exploit people or animals in our programmes.

Experiences Sri Lanka

Our Locations

Sri Lanka is an island that promises many types of adventures to suit visitors with various interests, made possible by our diverse local people who act as guides and hosts.

Sri Lanka’s diverse topography and our connectivity with each location, our professionalism and our exceptional attitude towards service make us an outstanding provider of activities and experiences in the region.

One of the many attractions of the country is that you can do many activities in a very short time span, without having to travel long distances from one activity location to an other.  For example, you could do a rainforest walk in the morning, a whitewater-rafting trip by noon, and do a leisurely stroll on the beach in the evening, all on the same day!

Why we do not promote following attractions

You may find that we have not included certain common tourist attractions that are generally found in other programme designs; namely, the turtle hatcheries on the southern coast, the Pinnawala elephant orphanage, the Habarana elephant rides and the Bullock Cart Trail. These are not included due to conservation and ethical reasons.

Turtle Hatcheries

We do not encourage our visitors to patronize the turtle hatcheries as this concept has serious negative aspects in terms of conservation. We encourage visitors to observe turtles in their natural habitats. For further information check the link below.  More Information

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

We do not encourage our clients to visit the above either. We do not agree with the concept of how the establishment is run. We are happy to see that even the Born Free Foundation has now taken a similar stand.

Elephant back rides – Habarana We have concerns about the way this is being done. However, there may be a few ethical operators but in general, we do not agree with the “working hours”, how they give rest to the animals, trails they use etc.

Traditional village tour with a canoe trip and bullock carts – Habarana This is an extremely commercialized touristic operation where a lot is “staged”. We encourage the visitors to have less touristic experiences and instead experience the real Sri Lanka.

UNDP SLTDA Partnership to establish a National Sustainable Tourism Certification Scheme NSTCS

SLTDA and UNDP signed an agreement to establish National Sustainable Tourism Certification Scheme NSTCS for Sri Lanka Tourism. Under this agreement UNDP is providing technical and financial assistance to the SLTDA to design and implement a pilot project for sustainable tourism certification.

The main reason for the Project to have started is to put into action the Sri Lanka Tourism Strategic Plan TSP 2017-2020. In the TSP, sustainability occupies an important place. Sustainable tourism in all aspects of tourism development and a national sustainable tourism certification scheme has been identified as a crucial element, placing emphasis on the development of the country’s tourism industry.

With international arrivals expected to rise globally, destinations strive to enhance their tourism competitiveness. While tourism growth brings positive outcomes for countries, there could also be negative impacts, unplanned tourism could lead to problems. Against this background, Sri Lanka government too with its ambitious growth targets of tourists arrivals, acknowledges that the tourism industry need to continue in offering positive tourism experiences ensuring the long term sustainability. It’s not a secret that some tourism hot spots are already feeling the pressure of tourism.

This project was designed considering the current importance given to sustainable tourism globally, and to successfully compete as a highly demanded destination. Therefore, the global context was considered in designing the project so that NSTCS will be relevant not only to Sri Lanka but also internationally.

Sri Lanka Tourism reached the No. 1 ranking as Top Destinations to visit in 2019 by the Lonely Planet, followed by Sri Lankan cuisine ranking to No. 1 in BBC Good Food 15 food trends for 2019. Research of more than 1.3 million social media posts found the Asian city location travellers most want to take a pictures of- Colombo ranked No. 1. These are very valuable recognitions that any destination would aspire to achieve. What this means to Sri Lanka is, it will experience a rapid influx of tourists to the Island. This is all the more reason why Sri Lanka should treat sustainability as an urgent intervention without delay. NSTCS will lead Sri Lanka Tourism in the right direction.

Given the vast and complex nature of all tourism service providers, this project scope considers the accommodation sector in the first phase. Already the first batch of hotels have applied for certification and their impressive sustainable practices will be recognized through this scheme.

Minister of Tourism Development Wildlife and Christian Affairs, Hon. John Amaratunga explains that 'Sustainable development is the foundation for developing Sri Lanka as a tourism destination. Our strategic plan identifies the need and the importance of growing the industry in a sustainable manner. We have already embarked on a valuable journey to retain Sri Lanka as a No 1 Destination in the World' He further stated that 'UNDP’s technical assistance in sustainable tourism is very relevant and timely to our country.'

Mr.Kishu Gomes, Chairman STDA remarked that 'Sri Lanka Tourism has optimistic goals to be achieved in the next 3 to 5 years, these deliverables can only be ensured if we grow the industry in a sustainable manner where product and service quality is maintained on par with the best of the world. Then we will have satisfied repeat tourists and they will bring more tourism to the country through word of mouth publicity.'

The Resident Representative of UNDP Sri Lanka, Jorn Sorensen stated 'The Adoption of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals presents us a huge opportunity to put Sri Lanka on a more prosperous and sustainable development path. This is why UNDP is pleased to partner with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority to make the tourism industry more sustainable in the long run and ensure its benefits are more widely shared.'

The project involves a partnership of SLTDA, BIOFIN and UNDP. is a UNDP managed global collaboration to develop and implement an evidence-based methodology that improves biodiversity outcomes using finance and economics.

SLTDA is the government authority tasked with planning, development, regulation, and policy implementation of tourism and related industries.

Signed Agreement was exchanged by the Chairman Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Mr. Kishu Gomes and UNDP Ms. Tharuka Dissanaike, Policy and Design Specialist UNDP in the presence of the Hon John Amaratunga, Minister of Tourism Development Wildlife and Christian Affairs, and Director General SLTDA, Mr. Upali Ratnayake.

Expected outcomes of the NSTCS project

  • Establishing a National Sustainability Certification Scheme enabling SLTDA to certify sustainable tourism businesses in Sri Lanka. Promoting sustainable tourism is increasingly becoming essential to balance environmental protection with development, but also enhancing competitiveness of individual tourism businesses, and promoting Sri Lanka as a sustainable tourism destination. The certification scheme will serve to mitigate the negative impacts of tourism, but also incentivize tourism businesses to transition toward environmentally and socially responsible business practices.
  • A national certification will help Sri Lanka tourism to progress toward its Vision be recognized as the world’s finest island for memorable, authentic and diverse experiences. This certification scheme will help offer high value extraordinary experiences that reflect Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, that are socially inclusive and environmentally responsible.
  • NSTCS would serve to incentivize tourism providers to integrate environmentally and culturally sensitive practices making the businesses more competitive locally, and internationally.
  • Minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and local culture ensures that the country’s resources can be harnessed for generations to come. Importantly, generating income, providing skilled employment opportunities, preserving local ecosystems and cultures, and creating a positive experiences for local people, tourism companies, and tourists themselves. This maximizes the positive contribution of tourism, including contribution to poverty reduction.
  • The Scheme will contribute towards UNSDGs

National Sustainable Tourism Certification Scheme

Commencing with a workshop held in May 2018 in Colombo, Sri Lanka involving all key tourism stakeholders to discuss ‘A Road Map for National Sustainable Tourism Certification Scheme’ initial scope and modalities of a pilot project was discussed for a national certification scheme.

In developing NSTCS, SLTDA has engaged all tourism stakeholders - government agencies and the private sector in a partnership. This has provided a platform to identify respective aspirations of each party to move towards a mutually benefiting outcomes with the national interest as the foremost objective.

Given the vast and complex nature of all service providers in Sri Lanka Tourism, initial sustainability certification is selectively carried out to a sample in the accommodation sector.

The pilot project will select applicants for the certification through a sustainability survey and select qualifying hotels for certification. Currently it is only limited to hotels participated in the sustainability survey.

eco tourism in sri lanka

Revitalizing and transforming the tourism sector into a resilient and sustainable sector, particularly in the post-pandemic context, requires a tourism sector approach. In this context, UNDP set out to support the rebuilding of a transformed, competitive, and resilient tourism sector with sustainable tourism experiences. Sri Lanka's Economy Shows Signs of Stabilization, but Poverty to Remain Elevated

COLOMBO, April 2, 2024 —Sri Lanka’s economy is projected to see moderate growth of 2.2% in 2024, showing signs of stabilization, following the severe economic downturn of 2022. But, the country still faces elevated poverty levels, income inequality, and labor market concerns, says the World Bank's latest bi-annual update.

Released today, the Sri Lanka Development Update, Bridge to Recovery, highlights that Sri Lanka saw declining inflation, higher revenues on the back of the implementation of new fiscal policies, and a current account surplus for the first time in nearly five decades, buoyed by increased remittances and a rebound in tourism.

However, poverty rates continued to rise for the fourth year in a row, with an estimated 25.9% of Sri Lankans living below the poverty line in 2023. Labor force participation has also seen a decline, particularly among women and in urban areas, exacerbated by the closure of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Households are grappling with multiple pressures from high prices, income losses, and under employment. This has led to households taking on debt to meet food requirements and maintain spending on health and education.

“Sri Lanka’s economy is on the road to recovery, but sustained efforts to mitigate the impact of the economic crisis on the poor and vulnerable are critical, alongside a continuation of the path of robust and credible structural reforms,” emphasized Faris Hadad-Zervos, World Bank Country Director for Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka . “This involves a two-pronged strategy: first, to maintain reforms that contribute to macroeconomic stability and second, to accelerate reforms to stimulate private investment and capital inflows, which are crucial for economic growth and poverty reduction.”

Looking forward, the report projects a modest pickup in growth of 2.5% in 2025, with a gradual increase in inflation and a small current account surplus. However, high debt service obligations are expected to exert pressure on fiscal balances. Poverty rates are anticipated to remain above 22% until 2026. Risks to the outlook remain, particularly related to inadequate debt restructuring, reversal of reforms, financial sector vulnerabilities, and the enduring impact of the crisis. The report emphasizes that strong reform implementation will be fundamental to fostering a resilient economy through continued macro-fiscal-financial stability, greater private sector investment, and addressing risks associated with state-owned enterprises.

The Sri Lanka Development Update  is a companion piece to the  South Asia Development Update ,  a twice-a-year World Bank report that examines economic developments and prospects in the South Asia region and analyzes policy challenges faced by countries. The April 2024 edition, Jobs for Resilience , projects South Asia to remain the fastest-growing region in the world, with growth projected to be 6.0% in 2024- driven mainly by robust growth in India and recoveries in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. But this strong outlook is deceptive, says the report. For most countries, growth is still below pre-pandemic levels and is reliant on public spending. At the same time, private investment growth has slowed sharply in all South Asian countries and the region is not creating enough jobs to keep pace with its rapidly increasing working-age population. The report recommends a range of policies to spur firm growth and boost employment as well as help lift growth and productivity and free up space for public investments in climate adaptation.
