Ernie Miller Nature Center provides an opportunity for learning, understanding, and admiring nature’s ever-changing ways during educational field trips & group events.

Midwest Trust Center Arts Ed

Overland Park, KS

Catch a theater performance at the Midwest Trust Center and learn about the arts! The shows are affordable and fun for students of all ages. Family shows are also offered in the evening for scout groups, team activities, or a fun family night.

There are performances from Messner Puppet Theatre, as well as concerts and other performances. You can find the upcoming school events here .

Daytime performances begin at 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. and cost $6 per person or $5 for school groups .

Lanesfield Historic Site

Edgerton, KS

The Lanesfield Historic Site offers the Farm Family Program for preschoolers to 3rd grade or the Living History Program for 4th and 5th graders.

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop allows students to discover history where it happened. During the field trip, kids participate in activities with animals, wagons, and the stagecoach!

School field trip programs are two hours long and are offered Tuesday through Friday in morning and afternoon sessions. You can also choose multiple programs to create a full-day field trip. Times are also flexible to accommodate bus and pick-up schedules.

• Half-day program: minimum of 20 students for $6 per student.
• Full-day program: minimum 20 students for $10 per student.
• $1 reduced admission per student for Title 1 schools

TimberRidge Adventure Center

TimberRidge Adventure Center (TRAC), offers a wide range of opportunities for families, friends, class field trips, and work groups. Activities will challenge students, teach better communication, solve problems, and work together. Team building activities are for everyone from Boy Scouts to executive boards. So,  experience fun and excitement in a non-competitive, safe and supportive atmosphere.

The challenge course features 28 low activities, a zip line (300 ft.), a climbing tower & 3 high climbing ropes activities. These allow participants to problem-solve & explore communication in high-intensity environments. You can also participate in other activities like fishing, canoes, paddle boats, archery & hiking!

Nerman Museum

Anita B Gorman Conservation Discovery Center     

Kansas City, MO

The Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center is a unique, hands-on, urban conservation education center. Located in the heart of KC, it is near a large portion of schools.

The Discovery Center offers free educational field trips that follow curriculum standards for your school. Educational programs provide a variety of hands-on learning experiences and workshops for your class or group, including a butterfly garden, bird feeding garden, and Grow Native demonstrations including prairie wildflowers, wetland, water garden, and manicured upland and lowland forests.

Additionally, families and groups are welcome to attend any of the demonstrations, activities, and self-guided hikes available at the center. There are also tours of the building and grounds showing environmentally friendly ways to build an urban environment in harmony with nature.

The Discovery Center also has a 0.25 mile disabled-accessible sidewalk that takes visitors through the Grow Native Gardens on the site.

Kansas City Young Audiences     

Almost 200 artists work with KCYA to bring educational arts programs to schools, community centers, hospitals & libraries throughout the KC metro.

You can find many different activities including live performances, art workshops, after-school programs & artist residencies for every age range. These programs are available for nearly all arts, as well as many academic subjects.

Kemper Outdoor Education Center   

Blue Springs, MO

The Kemper Outdoor Education Center staff offers guided interpretive programs for classroom field trips, youth groups, and organizations. In April, May, and September, the X-Stream Green field trip program offers multi-station outdoor education for 1st to 6th-grade classrooms. The interpretive staff conducts programs on Snakes, Bats, Skins and Skulls, Butterflies, Birds and Binoculars, Fishing, Recycling, Nature Hikes, and much more.

Inside the Nature Center, you’ll find rock and fossil exhibits, a natural resource library, and mounted examples of native wildlife. The grounds feature nature trails, butterfly and water gardens, wildlife viewing areas, an arboretum, a shelter house, a large pond, and a day camp site. The Outdoor Classroom offers a valuable resource for hands-on environmental education. Hikers on the Habitat Trail can explore a variety of ecology: wetland, prairie, woodland, and cactus glade. Self-guided tours are free of charge.

Missouri Town 1855

Lee’s Summit, MO

See what a progressive farming community, spread across some 30 sloping acres, looked like in the mid-1800s. Missouri Town 1855 is composed of more than 25 buildings dating from 1820 – 1860. This living history museum uses original structures, furnishings, and equipment. Also depicting the 19th Century lifestyles are interpreters in period attire, authentic field and garden crops, and rare livestock breeds.

Burr Oak Woods   

Discover the beauty of nature with the Missouri Department of Conservation at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. The nature center offers free programs and activities for classes, troops, field trips, and groups throughout the fall and winter. The center also hosts activities, classes, and events for families and individuals.

Families and groups are also welcome to visit the center to explore the nature center’s open savannas, prairies, and woodland areas during visiting hours. Lecompton Historical Society

Lecompton, MO

Lecompton Historical Society would like to extend an open invitation for you to take a step back in time, to look at the rich heritage that led to the formation of their town and the State of Kansas.

Come explore the Lecompton Territorial Museum for your next field trip or group event and learn about Kansas history up through today! Lecompton was founded in 1854 and in 1855, the town became the permanent and only official capital of the Kansas Territory.

During the group activity, you will participate in a “Bleeding Kansas” play, set in the 1850s. So, you will be right in the middle of the action!

College Basketball Experience

Come discover and play while learning! Kids can explore college basketball in interactive experiences in downtown Kansas City.

Kids can shoot hoops, try to beat the clock, and even be a sportscaster! But it’s not just fun, learn about the history, and walk through the Gallery of Honor and Mentor’s Circle. They also offer group discounts for your class or group.

Sunset Trails Stables

Sunset Trails Stables offers field trip opportunities for a number of organizations including daycare facilities, elementary and home schools, Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts, church youth groups, and many others.

Field trips are available all days of the week, rain or shine, and include two hours of instruction from our staff. You can also eat lunch at the picnic area before or after the field trip. Visitors are encouraged to bring lunch and/or snacks.

The cost is $10 per person for two-hour field trips that include horseback riding. If they do not include horseback riding is $7 per person. Prices are for children and adults regardless of age. All field trip participants are required to have a release form signed by their parent or guardian prior to the day of the field trip. Release forms can be picked up at the Sunset Trails Stables office or printed online. Riding helmets will be provided. Closed-toed shoes are required.

Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch

Liberty, MO

Carolyn’s Pumpkin Patch is Kansas City’s Original Pumpkin Patch and a “must-visit” fall destination! With easy access from all parts of the Kansas City area, Carolyn’s is just 2 miles south of Liberty, Missouri. The farm offers the freedom of a self-guided tour around the Pumpkin Patch to allow educators the opportunity to work within their school or group’s curriculum.

School tours include…

Students will also enjoy a tractor-drawn wagon ride, a pie pumpkin, a honey stick, and Carolyn’s award-winning coloring book (available in 8 languages). Fort Osage  

Journey back to a time when Missouri was “out West” in the wilderness, and experience the lives of the men and women who pioneered the American frontier. Authentically dressed characters provide living-history insights into the daily life of both the military and civilian populations during the tour.  

Built in 1808 under the direction of William Clark, co-leader of the Lewis and Clark expedition, the Fort served a dual role. It was both a military garrison and trade center. Overlooking the Missouri River, this historic site has been reconstructed to portray Fort Osage as it was in 1812. Your group will be transported in time to experience true frontier life.  

Wayside Waifs

If your group loves animals, plan a field trip at Wayside Waifs!

Their “No More Bullying!” anti-bullying programs focus on preventing violence against animals and people. Visit them online to learn more about the violence prevention program & how to book your group.

Kaleidoscope

Your class will get creative when they visit Kaleidoscope. This local fave is free and full of endless creativity.

With two locations, Lenexa and Overland Park, Urban Air Adventure Park is a great field trip option for your class. There are warrior courses, zip lining, trampolines, and more.

Lee’s Summit and Kansas City

Sky Zone is a must for field trips. They have two locations across the metro and your class will definitely enjoy features like their SkySlam, Ultimate Dodgeball, SkyJoust, Ninja Warrior Course, and more.

YaYa’s Alpaca Farm

Kansas City Field Trips

In this section, anita b. gorman conservation discovery center.

The Discovery Center boasts eight acres of natural areas with short paved and natural trails through forest, woodland, wetland, and prairie habitats. The center's demonstration beds showcase how native plants can be used for home landscaping. Sycamore Station is a children's natural play area. Nature exhibits are available for viewing inside the building.

We offer hands-on programs for students to get outside and explore nature. Missouri schools can reserve free nature programs for students throughout the year.

Discovery Center

• Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled program. Late arrivals will shorten your program. If you will not be able to attend, or if your group is running late, please contact us as soon as possible with an update.
• Programs are designed for Missouri groups. All programs include ample time outdoors, so please help children prepare accordingly with appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellant as needed for the season.
• In case of inclement weather, we may substitute an indoor program during the time normally spent outdoors.
• Let us know in advance if anyone in your group needs special accommodations.

Registration begins July 15 for programs from September through December and Oct. 15 for programs from January through August.

To ensure quality programs, please arrange to be at the Discovery Center for the full length of the program, plus lunch. Please add 30 minutes to program times for lunch.

Discover trees.

Through a story, exploration, and outdoor play, students will learn all about the characteristics of trees and how wildlife and people benefit from trees.

Becoming Bears

Discover one of Missouri’s largest mammals, the black bear. Through hands-on activities, students will learn the characteristics of bears, what they need in their habitat to survive, and how they are able to thrive in Missouri.

Outdoor Sensations

The natural world is filled with sights, sounds, textures, and smells. Students will learn how wild animals rely on their senses to survive while meeting animal ambassadors. Through hands-on activities, students will explore their four of their senses (not taste) to better experience nature.

Seeds to Trees

From seed to sapling to mighty oak, trees change through the seasons and the years. Through hands-on activities, students will explore the life cycle of a tree, learn to identify trees, and learn the different resources trees provide. They will explore different ways to identify trees; from nuts to fruits to leaves. The program concludes with students making their own tree art.

No Place Like MISSOURI

Ecosystems provide organisms with everything they need to survive. Through hands-on investigation and activities, students will explore the plants and animals living in Missouri's aquatic, prairie, and forest ecosystems. This program will be mostly outdoors.

Crossing Missouri

2 to 4 hours (depending on group size) — not available dec. 1 through march 8.

Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery crossed Missouri in 1804 as the expedition began and in 1806 as they returned. Through hands-on rotational experiences, students will learn the survival skills and natural resources that provided for the expedition’s needs.

Staying Alive

Organisms rely on specialized structures to survive. Through a hike and hands-on investigations of skulls, beaks, pelts, and live animals, students will identify specialized structures and their uses. This program culminates with an art activity highlighting a Missouri species and how it survives in its habitat.

Exploring Your Watershed

We all live in a watershed and depend on clean water. Through hands-on exploration, students will examine how our actions shape the waterways around us. Students will assess water quality using live macroinvertebrates to determine the health of an ecosystem.

Mighty Trees

From seed to sapling to shade tree, trees change through time. Students explore life stages and parts of a tree through live outdoor visuals and learn what trees provide.

All About Snakes

Snakes elicit much misunderstanding and apprehension. Most Missouri snakes are harmless. Students will discover snakes that live in the prairies, ponds, swamps, and forests of Missouri. They will also learn what makes them beneficial and even meet our snake ambassadors!

Owls Are a Hoot

Owls are without a doubt some of the most fascinating raptors in Missouri. Students will discover the amazing specialized structures and behavioral adaptations of these nighttime predators. Whoooo knows, you too may learn to speak their language! It’ll be a hoot!

What Kind Are You?

There are a variety of animal families in Missouri. The differences between them make each family unique. Hands-on interactive activities in this program will highlight those characteristics. Students will also have a chance to get up close and personal with a Discovery Center animal ambassador!

M.A.D. Wildlife

Seasonal changes affect plant and animal behavior, including people. Winter is stressful for most organisms and where we see the most adaptations. Students will participate in activities to learn how plants and animals survive during these major changes and why organisms behave the way that they do in their specific ecosystem.

Dissect and Discover!

Owls are a unique nocturnal bird. Through hands-on activities, students will learn about owls and the specialized structures they use for survival. Students will become wildlife biologists as they dissect and examine owl pellets, discovering the diet of this predaceous raptor!

Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center

Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center (CNC), located in Blue Springs just north of I-70, is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Nestled in the heart of this 1,071-acre conservation area are six hiking trails, including two paved trails, which provide easy access to most parts of the area.

The interpretive center has educational and informative exhibits, including a 3,000-gallon freshwater aquarium, the Discover Nature play area, a wildlife viewing room, and a variety of live amphibians and reptiles.

Burr Oak Woods CNC

• Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled program. Late arrivals will shorten your program time.
• Picnic areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Burr Oak Woods has a trash-in/trash-out policy; please bring trash bags for your group.
• Most programs contain an outdoor component. In case of inclement weather, we may substitute an indoor program. If Blue Springs Schools are closed due to weather, all programs will be canceled.
• Your group is important to us. Contact us with your topic of interest and we will strive to meet your needs for a presentation on your topic of choice.

Programs are designed to meet the needs of emotionally, physically, or educationally challenged groups and will focus on a variety of sensory experiences. Flexible, hands-on programs offer a nurturing developmental approach to the study of nature.

Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center has a variety of programs developed for school-age children. Each program incorporates hands-on and minds-on learning opportunities in the outdoors. Programs are designed specifically to enhance science-based subjects, but many are cross-curricular.

Naturalist-led programs at Burr Oak Woods CNC.

Grade Pre-K (ages 3–5)

Naturally sense-sational.

Head out on the trails of Burr Oak Woods to discover how to see, smell, touch, taste, and hear just like our wild animal friends. This program includes a puppet show and trail hike.

Nature’s Hide and Seek

Now you see me, now you don’t! Discover the strategies animals use to avoid predators or to search for prey. Observational skills will be put to the test as we play interactive games and hike down a hidden trail.

Grade Kindergarten

Micro forest adventure.

Did you know there is a mini world beneath our feet? We will use magnifying glasses to focus on how tiny plants and animals work together on the forest floor to support a healthy ecosystem.

Why should you be wild about plants? Because they are essential to life on our planet! From oxygen to fruits, their values are endless. Join us as we explore a plant’s needs plus investigate how plants and pollinators trade services to survive.

Signs of Survival

Cycle of Life

Many colorful and entertaining birds live in our state, and there are many ways to attract them to your yard! Learn how to identify common Missouri backyard birds and what it takes to lure them in!

No Boundaries: Cold-Blooded Critters

Sensory-friendly; 1 hour.

Slither, crawl, hop, or swim into the exciting world of Missouri’s amphibians and reptiles. These cold-blooded animals are unique, diverse, and very important to our ecosystem. Join us as we learn about these wonderful creatures. Plus, we will get a chance to meet some!

No Boundaries: Incredible Mammals of Missouri

What’s soft and furry and doesn’t lay eggs? Mammals! They’re the warmest animals around! Get up close and personal with real furs to see and feel some of the most common Missouri mammals.

The arabia steamboat museum, field trips.

It is our mission to provide students with a memorable experience that will ignite their imaginations, increase their appetites for knowledge, enhance their school work and impact their future careers. With over 200 tons of treasure on display, the Arabia Steamboat Museum will bring history and science to life.

Because we believe in the power of field trips to extend learning beyond the classroom walls, we have compiled classroom lesson plans aligned with Missouri and Kansas state standards, as well as Common Core. Any discussion of American history before the Civil War is enhanced by seeing the Arabia’s treasures in person, while science classes are supplemented by our preservation lab demonstrations. Regardless of grade level, subject matter and class size, our tours and lesson plans can reinforce classroom learning through adventure and discovery.

We welcome home school field trips, church groups, scout troops, and sports teams, along with public, private and charter schools.

Cultivate a love of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) on an outing to one of these local attractions.

The Linda Hall Library

The world’s largest privately funded library of science, technology and engineering is located right in the heart of Kansas City, MO, on UMKC’s campus. The Linda Hall Library , situated atop a picturesque 14-acre urban arboretum, was gifted by the late Herbert & Linda Hall. Within its walls, patrons can expect to find one of the most comprehensive collections of physical science, life science, engineering and technology collections, as well as educational programs and ongoing lecture series, exhibits and events. As a nonprofit institution, the library offers free admission to the general public. 

Tips: In addition to standard library services, guests are welcome to visit the adjacent William N. Deramus III Cosmology Theater. The theater features View Space , a Space Telescope Science Institute educational series on space-based research, as well as various segments that highlight our planet, its environment and natural disasters. Presentations are approximately 10 minutes in length and use state-of-the-art technology, including a 114-inch display screen, a 1080i projector, as well as a stunning new sound system. Visitors are welcome to come and go at any time during standard library hours. In addition, guests may enjoy the urban arboretum which boasts more than 300 trees (including 12 Champion Trees) and a peony garden. Picnics and lawn chairs are prohibited, but leashed pets are allowed. The arboretum is open from dawn until dusk.

Sprawled out over 200 acres, the Kansas City Zoo is home to more than 1,700 animals, making it one of the largest and most affordable forms of family edu-tainment. Guests can take a trip around the world without ever leaving town as they explore the Asia, Africa and Australia complexes within the zoo’s grounds. Walking isn’t the only way to take in the sights and sounds! Hop aboard a tram or a train ride, take a spin on the Endangered Species Carousel, or fly high above the Serengeti on a Sky Safari. Get an up close and personal view of both curiously cuddly and ferociously fierce animals at the Polar Bear Passage, Stingray Bay, Helzberg Penguin Plaza and the Discovery Barn. And don’t forget to check out the shows! Sea lions strut their stuff at Sea Lion Splash , while feathered friends put on a dazzling display at Flights of Fancy !

Tips: Wear a pedometer to track all those steps you’ll get in, sport comfortable walking shoes (your feet will thank you!), don a baseball cap or sunglasses and don’t forget the sunscreen! Bringing a little one? Don’t forget to pack a baby carrier or stroller. If you want to pack light, you can rent a stroller at guest services. Visitors are welcome to bring their own sack lunches, snacks and water bottles; the zoo simply asks that you do not bring glass containers or alcoholic beverages. There are various outdoor picnic areas to enjoy your meal. Those looking for a special dining experience, or a simple pick-me-up snack, can choose from one of eight delectable dining options found onsite. 

Cosmosphere

Visitors from around the globe have been making their way to Hutchinson, KS, to visit the Cosmosphere since it’s humble beginnings in 1962. This international science education center and space museum holds the largest collection of Russian artifacts outside of Moscow, as well as the second largest collection of U.S. space artifacts outside of the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum. Combined, this world-class collection unpacks the incredible story of the Space Race in an immersive experience unlike any other. The Cosmosphere is home to the recently renovated Justice Planetarium, Dr. Goddard’s Lab (where live science demonstrations take place daily), as well as the Carey Digital Dome Theater. 

Tips: The Cosmosphere is a proud participant in the Blue Star Museum program, which enables active-duty military and their family (up to five members) to receive free admission to the Hall of Space Museum from Armed Forces Day to Labor Day. ASTC members also receive free admission to the Hall of Space Museum. Travelling with your furry friend? Apple Lane Animal Hospital hosts free boarding for your feline friend or canine companion during your Hutchinson visit. (Spots are not guaranteed, so make sure to call ahead.) After your visit, hold onto your ticket! An all-access mission pass at the Cosmosphere entitles you to a $5 discount at Strataca, Kansas’ underground salt museum. 

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

National Museum of Toys & Miniatures

In 1982, Mary Harris Francis and Barbara Hall Marshall opened the Miniature Museum of Kansas City at the historic Tureman Mansion within UMKC’s campus. The original museum was 7,500 square feet and operated by two full-time staffers. Over the course of the next three decades, the museum grew more than 33,000 square feet, with the collection amassing over 72,000 articles. From 2012 to 2014, the museum conducted a capital campaign and renovation process that ultimately resulted in the opening and renaming of the National Museum of Toys & Miniatures in August of 2015. One of the nation’s largest historic toy collections on public display, T/m now showcases more than 86,000 objects.

The National Museum of Toys & Miniatures (T/m) provides ongoing programs and events throughout the year. From July 5 to Sept. 21, visitors can explore Bridging the Gender Divide: Toys That Build Stem Skills . This unique exhibit will showcase how toys have been preparing children both in the past and present for pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Discover the evolution of toys, primarily marketed to boys, from construction to chemistry sets. Interactive components include an arcade, HO working model train and a game that highlights female accomplishments within the STEM field over the last two centuries.

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is passionate about providing youth in our community opportunities to experience high quality performing arts, learn about the facility and even plan for a future in the arts.

The Kauffman Center Open Doors Spotlight on Youth program offers a wide range of experiences for students to learn from staff and utilize the facility’s resources. Find out more about each of the available experiences below.

+ Career Center Stage: Meet the Kauffman Center Staff

Learn about how the Kauffman Center staff runs one of the country’s premier performing arts centers. Students can learn more about the daily operations and professional departments (e.g. marketing, programming, fundraising, theater production, and more!) These staff Q&A sessions last between 30 – 60 minutes and are often paired with a 45-minute facility tour. Scheduling is based on staff availability, and the Kauffman Center typically hosts no more than one Career Center Stage a month.

Recommended Participants : College and high school classes (available for up to 30 students at a time)

• Tour and Career Center Stage: $150, lasts approximately 90 – 120 minutes
• Tour only: $100, lasts approximately 60 minutes

Fees will be paid for through the Open Doors program if the group is affiliated with non-profit organization (must provide Tax ID number).

+ In-Person Backstage Intensive

As part of our Open Doors Spotlight on Youth program, students can participate in a special backstage experience. Students will engage in demonstrations, tours and discussions with some Kauffman Center production and administrative staff members. This unique experience is designed for high school and/or college students interested in careers in technical theatre including lighting, sound and stage management as well as administrative roles like marketing, ticketing and patron services. Participants will be amazed by all the work that happens behind the scenes to create a successful production! Scheduling is based on staff and facility availability, and the Kauffman Center typically hosts no more than one Backstage Intensive a quarter.

Recommended Participant Ages : High school or college students ages 15 – 22 years

Duration : 2.5 hours – includes a tour and presentations for two areas of interest (lighting, sound, stage management, marketing, patron services or ticketing)

Fee: $300 (available for up to 30 students at a time)

Fees will be paid for through the Open Doors program if the group is affiliated with a non-profit organization (must provide Tax ID number).

Backstage Intensive Presented by Cerner Charitable Foundation.

+ Virtual Backstage Intensive

As part of our Open Doors Spotlight on Youth program, students can participate in a special backstage experience. Four video demonstrations on various backstage technical elements and careers are available within the portal, as well as accompanying resources like vocabulary, comprehension questions and activities. Backstage Intensive is designed to introduce high school students to careers in technical theater, including lighting, sound, production management and more. Students will be amazed by all the work that happens backstage to create a successful production!

Recommended Participant Ages : High school or college students ages 15 – 22 years old.

Duration : Explore the virtual experience at your own pace. Each demonstration video lasts approximately 20 minutes and has accompanying resources for your classroom to complete, like vocabulary, comprehension questions and activities.

Backstage Intensive Portal

+ Educational Tours

Educational Tours are private tours that provide an in-depth look at the facility’s architectural highlights while giving young people the opportunity to explore the Kauffman Center’s performance spaces. Participants will learn about the Kauffman Center’s history and will take part in a discussion about the artistic details throughout the facility.

Educational Tours must be requested through the form below at least three weeks in advance of the requested visit date. Tours are led by knowledgeable volunteer tour guides and are only available with advance reservations. Please note that tours must be scheduled around the performances and work calls of the technicians, artists, and administrators who produce our amazing events; therefore, tours will not include access to backstage areas and we cannot guarantee that every tour will have the opportunity to view Muriel Kauffman Theatre and Helzberg Hall.

Duration : Approximately 60 minutes

Fee : $100 for groups of 35 attendees or fewer and $150 for groups over 35 attendees.

There’s nothing we enjoy more than introducing you to birds or helping you find things in nature. Our volunteers who lead these field trips work hard to make sure we’re exposing you to a diverse amount of habitats throughout the entire greater Kansas City area and beyond. Field trips visit all the habitats that our birds rely on for their survival – wetlands, woodlands, prairies and grasslands, agriculture, urban, and savannah.

For all field trips, we recommend that you dress for the weather, in layers, and bring water, snacks and insect repellent. In the details, we’ll let you know if you need to bring lunch or lunch money. Almost everything that Burroughs Audubon offers is free, even to non-members.  

Some field trips are low-impact and are spent in the car, so if you own any FRS radios, we encourage you to bring them so that bird sightings can be shared between vehicles. Some of the trips are walking trails once you meet. Any questions you have regarding the trips can be answered by the field-trip coordinators or by the volunteer leader of that specific trip.

Join us as we walk the multi-use paved trails of Tomahawk Streamway in search of feathered friends. We will be primarily enjoying migrating north-bound sparrows, a few early migrants, and year-round residents during this walk. Your leader for this trip is Malcolm Gold. Saturday, April 20th – Beginner Birding and intro to the Nature Adventurepack Program KCK

Whether you are an expert birder or a birding beginner, we welcome you to join us on a guided bird walk with Audubon Society member, Ann Tanner. She’ll point out the birds that we come to expect seeing at the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library as well as ones that we would probably never notice on our own. Bring your binoculars, if you have them. We will have some pairs at the library to borrow if you don’t have a pair of your own.

Sunday, April 21st  – Wilderness Wetlands

We will meet at the Blue River Elementary School on W 163rd Terrace at 7 am and expect to walk slightly over 2 miles at a leisurely pace along a paved trail that skirts wetland ponds and the Blue River in southeast Overland Park Kansas. We will search the wetlands and forest edge for migrating shorebirds, waterfowl, lingering sparrows, and early arrival passerines in addition to the year round resident species that visit the location.

Friday, May 3rd – Blue River Parkway Migratory Bird Census

Join us as we conduct a migratory bird census along the Blue River near the average peak of migration through our area. This census assists KC WildLands and their mission of preserving the natural communities around Kansas City, and it counts toward volunteer hours for Master Naturalists. We’ll walk the hiking/biking trails along the Blue River, approx. 2 miles. Trail conditions can be very muddy, depending on precipitation and temperature. Monday, May 6th – Burr Oak Woods

Join us as we scan the wooded canopy and creek edge of Burr Oak Woods in search of migrating passerines. We will be primarily hoping for north bound thrushes, vireos, and warblers but will also enjoy the summer and year round feathered residents that call the area home such as wrens, woodpeckers, and hawks. Meet at the lower parking area at Hickory Grove Trail head at 7:30 am.

Tuesday, May 7th – Jerry Smith Park Spring Migration Bird Census

Join us as we visit this restored prairie and city park to conduct a the 13th annual migratory bird census which is requested to assist with KC Wildlands and their ongoing mission toward land stewardship around the KC Metro region. We will walk the trails in search of migrating warblers, vireos, flycatchers, thrushes and the year-round residents that use the habitat of this Kansas City park. Counting birds at this park counts toward volunteer hours for Master Naturalists.

Monday, May 13th – Beginner Birding and Bird Walk at Meadowbrook Club House

This program also has a special group leading the walk for seniors that are 50 years of age or older. The first portion of this program will be a presentation, followed by a casual round-trip walk. Tuesday, May 14th – Blue Springs Lake and Wetlands

Meet at the parking lot on the east end of the dam near the wetlands at 7:30 am as we will explore this little-known birding gem in the Kansas City metro area. The complex consists of 3 large pools, a few small ones and scrubby and riparian areas. A variety of species are possible with the habitat diversity include birds using scrubby habitat such as Orchard Orioles and Bell’s Vireos, species using wetlands such as Little Blue Herons and shorebirds, and passerines using forest edges such as woodpeckers, orioles, and warblers.

Directions coming from the south west: take Exit 14, Bowlin Road, off of I-470. Take a right and go east on Bowlin Road past the convenience store on your right and through the stoplight to NE Campground Rd on your left (hard to see, comes up fast). Turn left and follow the road toward the campground. At the campground entrance turn left and follow the road to the dam. Drive across the dam- you’ll be able to see the parking lot below you on the left. A short distance past the dam there will be a drive on your left. Directions from the north: take Exit 16A US Highway 40, off of I-470. Take a left and go east on US 40-Corporal Webster Memorial Parkway for 2.4 miles and turn right onto Tapawingo Lane/Turkey Hollow Rd. Take an immediate right on Lake Ridge Rd for half a mile and turn right into the parking lot. If you go across the dam you went to far.

Saturday, May 25th through Monday, May 27th – Sax-Zim Bog and the Northwoods of Minnesota

We’ll look for breeding summer residents of the northwoods on this trip. We hope to hear and see many nesting warbler species including Ovenbirds, Mourning, Golden-winged, Blackburnian, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green, Canada and if we are fortunate Connecticut. We expect to see and hear Yellow-bellied Flycatchers and Veery and hope to find other northern specialties on this trip. The organized field trips are spread out over two and a half days, with the main part of this trip being two all-day excursions on Saturday north of the Virginia/Hibbing are and all day Sunday around Sax-Zim Bog with head naturalist Clinton Nienhaus. Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging arrangements . There are many options around the Virginia/Hibbing area and Malcolm’s reserved an AirBNB for Friday through Monday if you would like to split the cost of house.

A more detailed itinerary of this trip will be worked out based on more recent sightings as well as the target species of people planning to attend. The tentative plan is to have everyone bring their own packed lunches for Saturday and head north in search of Three-toed Woodpecker and Black-backed Woodpeckers, perhaps Connecticut Warbler, Spruce Grouse, and Boreal Chickadee. Depending on recent sightings, Saturday will either continue all day or end mid afternoon with a break for early supper with a dusk search for Great Gray Owl near Sax-Zim Bog .  Sunday we will meet Clinton and visit nesting habitats around the bog for a variety of species. Clinton is a wealth of knowledge and I suspect we will have ample opportunity to learn about butterflies, dragonflies, flowers, and plants as we walk and explore the bog . Once again a packed picnic lunch is planned. Participants are expected to split the guiding costs as Clinton will be with us all day Sunday and a half day Monday. Monday morning is flexible as we are reserving this currently to target any misses. If amazing views of all target species are observed the first two days, additional option may include a drive east toward Oberg Mountain in search of Black-throated Blue Warbler.

Bring your binoculars, camera, and scope. Bring bug spray and layers of clothes for the visit to the north woods. Individuals of all skill levels are welcome to attend. 3/13/24 – Despite a tornado watch and the program actually being canceled 7 people showed up. Again the program proceeded until lightning moved in when the wood- cocks started flying. Everyone got good looks at at least one before everyone headed safely to their cars. 

3/12/24 – 22 people attended, including a couple of children (few in the group had actually seen a a woodcock). With a background of lightning off to the east the program proceeded and wood- cocks started to peent. Just as soon as the first one was flying overhead with everyone excited about great looks there was a flash of lightning above him. We immediately headed for cars and everyone got safely on their way home.

3/6/24 – 22 people attended. After a 20- discussion about woodcocks, 4 were observed doing their Sky Dance. Viewing was difficult, but about all were able to hear the 3 parts of the display.

3/05/2024 – Thirteen people enjoyed an unwinter-like day at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Even though mixed-species flocks were still in characteristic winter foraging mode, nesting season was on the minds of some year-round residents. Highlights included two Carolina Wrens shopping for real estate amongst a limestone outcrop, a pair of courting White-breasted Nuthatches, and a very vocal pair of Red-shouldered Hawks. In addition, a Barred Owl and Pileated Woodpecker called from the woods, and a Belted Kingfisher called as it flew along the creek, but never appeared. 

2/10/2024 – Six birders joined Don Arney on this winter census of the Blue River Parkway (Minor Park section), including Jonny Montgomery, a visitor to KC from Colorado. Jonny took some lovely photos which are embedded in the eBird list. Highlights included a couple of Pileated Woodpeckers occupied with courting and nest building and a furtive Fox Sparrow. 

2/06/2024 – Twenty people enjoyed an early spring-like day in February at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens! Mixed-species flocks in characteristic winter foraging mode were widely scattered, but more numerous and easily seen around the Arboretum’s feeding stations. Highlights there included Fox Sparrow and Oregon Junco (see wonderful photos by Betty Lou Peckham in eBird list). 

1/30/2024 – It took 3 tries, but thanks to 6 hearty people it was completed on January 30th. The morning started clear and crisp, but warmed up nicely. 22 species were tallied with highlights being great looks at a Red-shouldered Hawk soaring in slow circles overheard and a pair of Red-tailed Hawks sitting at a nest. The latter found by one of the participants. 

1/21/24 – Seven individuals met on a cold morning with the focus on finding a Tundra Swan.  Among the nearly 300 on Wyandotte County Lake we found a handful.

1/2/2024 – Eight individuals walked the paved and wood-chipped trails of Overland Park Arboretum to kick of 2024 with over thirty species and good looks at all of the seven expected woodpecker species of the Kansas City Area.

12/5/23 – Eighteen individuals took advantage of the free admission at Overland Park Arboretum on the first Tuesday of the month and enjoyed the time together in nature along the paved and wood-chipped trails.

12/2/23 – Thirteen individuals explored Osage, Lyon, and Coffey Counties in eastern Kansas on an extremely foggy day. Visibility was less than an eighth a mile at a few stops. A large flock of feeding Bonaparte’s Gulls below the Redmond Spillway and a large mixed flock of passerines at Lyon State Fishing Lake were highlights of the day.

The City Museum is housed in the 10-story, 600,000 square-ft warehouse is a mixture of children’s playground, surrealistic pavilion, and architectural marvel made out of repurposed objects.

JA BizTown® Field Trips | Junior Achievement of Greater Kansas City

JA BizTown® is an opportunity for students to work and grow in a simulated Kansas City. The curriculum helps teachers answer the question “why do I need to learn this?” and students can connect the dots between academics and the real world in a matter of weeks. JA provides teachers with the training, curriculum and ongoing support to ensure that they are able to work with their students to prepare for the visit to JA BizTown®. Most teachers start the curriculum in their classrooms about a month ahead of the field trip to ensure that kids are ready to get to work.

Students learn budgeting, work readiness skills, and then get to put what they learn to use when the visit JA BizTown® and run a city for a day. It’s a unique experience that will allow students to make financial decisions and collaborate with peers and volunteers to work towards their goals. In a quick four hour visit (two pay periods), students will be able to practice citizenship and work together to make the day a success.

Adults that grew up in Kansas City may fondly remember similar 5th grade fieldtrip experiences, and JA BizTown® will have that same effect on the students in classrooms today. JA has some availability for this school year, but dates are booking quickly!

A new kind of field trip idea

There is value to be found in all kinds of field trips—whether to a local farm, a museum, or our incredible facility. The specific value we bring to your field trip is the ability for participants to be active and engaged, using brain and brawn to complete obstacles and challenge themselves. We provide a safe environment for everyone to let loose and work up a sweat in ways that will remind them just how fun it is to keep fit! Through conquering our obstacles, your field trippers will build their confidence and self-esteem while benefiting their physical health as well.

How the field trips work

Safety is first at Motus Ninjas, so upon entry, everyone on the field trip will watch a safety video that will instruct on best practices for fun times at our facility. During your field trip, one of our staff members will run a speed course and time through the obstacles. Other staff members will be on hand to assist participants on obstacles and offer guidance when needed.

Safety rules and guidelines for field trips

If you book a field trip at any of our Kansas City area locations, there are a few things that you will need to know so all of your participants will be prepared to have the most possible fun. A staff member will be sure to brief you on everything again when you book, but we have the following basic rules everyone must follow:

• All party participants must watch the safety video
• Participants have to pass off on the Walls before they can move on to other obstacles
• No children under the age of 4 are allowed on the obstacle floor
• Children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
• No use of fitness equipment, except for the treadmills
• Participants must warm up properly prior to attempting obstacles
• Only one participant on an obstacle at a time
• Stay within your abilities—a field trip isn’t the time to accidentally hurt yourself!
• Proper technique must be used when descending from the Walls and kids area
• No lounging on the obstacles—they’re meant to be conquered!
• No climbing on the truss or padded poles
• No tag, chase, or hide and seek in the facility
• No gum, food, or drinks on the obstacle floor
• Be respectful and safe!
• No bullying or negativity permitted

As an additional safety measure, we have a few dress code requirements participants are required to follow. They include:

• Clean athletic shoes required, no bare feet
• Athletic clothing is needed
• Mid-section must be covered by clothing
• No dangly accessories that could be caught
• No pants with metal buttons
