Released as a concept album in 1969, the stage version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has become one of the world’s most beloved family musicals. The multi-award-winning show, which began life as a small-scale school concert, has been performed hundreds of thousands of times including multiple runs in the West End and on Broadway, international number one tours, and productions in over 80 countries as far afield as Austria and Zimbabwe and from Israel to Peru! The show features songs that have gone on to become pop and musical theatre standards, including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door To Me, Jacob and Sons, There’s One More Angel In Heaven and Go Go Go Joseph.

Told entirely through song with the help of the Narrator, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat follows the story of Jacob’s favourite son Joseph and his eleven brothers. After being sold into hardship by the brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled showman, the Pharaoh. As Joseph strives to resolve Egypt’s famine, he becomes Pharaoh’s right-hand man and eventually reunites with his family.  More info

National Tour Theater Review: JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (2014 National Tour)

TECHNICOLOR TURNCOAT

It’s like one of the Great Plagues of Egypt:  Every so often, some producer decides to dust off another production of this old Andrew Lloyd Webber chestnut, and cast some past-his-sell-by date TV star in the role of Joseph, the hot young Biblical fellow whose dreams and visions earn him fame and favor with Pharaoh. With music by Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat isn’t the worst work in the world – though it does suffer from being the overdone product of a thousand senior year high school productions.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat National Tour 2014

For director Andy Blankenbuehler’s creaky staging of the musical, we are given former American Idol stars Ace Young (in the role of the eponymous Joseph) and Diana DeGarmo (The Narrator), both of whom also happen to be husband and wife. In truth, it’s a pleasure to hear some of the famous old show tunes the production boasts – really, anyone who has a larynx can sing songs such as “Any Dream Will Do” and make it tuneful – but it’s awkward when you are watching a show and you realize that you’ve seen productions of it at gay bar karaoke nights with ten times the passion and vigor than this fusty production renders.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat National Tour 2014

Alas, this bus-and-truck edition of the show suffers from being so mechanical and lacking in underlying depth, it almost feels like a tech rehearsal in which the cast has been told to reign in any “acting” and just speed through the dialogue and songs to get through the piece as fast as possible.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat National Tour 2014

For those who don’t know the story, Joseph is sold into slavery by his several brothers, but winds up in the household of the Pharaoh after he correctly predicts seven years of famine. Most of the tale is recounted by The Narrator, and DeGarmo abets the karaoke-like atmosphere by brandishing a handheld microphone throughout the show. Her voice frankly lacks the chops and resonance for theatrical work: She strains at high notes, which tend to vanish into the ether of a hyena-like yip, and she seems capable of only a couple of expressions: The photogenic smile and the duck-lipped pout.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat National Tour 2014

As for Young’s turn as the role of Joseph, he doesn’t quite possess the stage heft necessary to command attention. His voice, amplified to the point of almost being bionic, sounds like thin ice, cracking and lacking in forceful breath control. Other performers in the role have possessed charisma that keeps your attention. For some reason, Young simply doesn’t catch it. Even when he’s dancing humpy and shirtless, our eyes wander to a flipping chorus dancer or an actor rubbing his belly as character expression. Young just can’t capture the focus, particularly since his default expression is a leering, smiling rictus that is reminiscent of the lockjaw grin of one who has perished from arsenic.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat National Tour 2014

Most of the show’s weaknesses, though, rely on Blankenbuehler’s rather sad staging, which seems weirdly stuck in the amber of the 1980s. Really, you have never seen so many instances of Jazz Hands since a production of Pippin from that decade. And the musical numbers are generally so over-miked that Rice’s already Easy-Bake lyrics are often lost in the fizz and the thump. Truly, even with the generous energy from a hard-working chorus, the show suffers from a curiously glum despair. For one thing, scenic designer Beowulf Borutt’s set is just plain cheap looking; at one point curtains descend from the ceiling, causing Pharaoh’s court to resemble the backdrop of a spelling bee in Paducah. As characters don cheap shrouds onto which are projected video images of fish or birds, it’s like a scene from the movie Soylent Green before the old guy gets eaten.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat National Tour 2014

Ultimately, it’s hard to see how any production of Joseph can get things so wrong, but this edition just clunks along as an act of indifferent commerce rather than theater.

These reviews must have missed the show. We’ve seen it a dozen times in different settings and productions. This production WAS outstanding in every way. Fresh, exciting, entertaining from beginning to end.

' src=

Just saw it last night. Wish I would have read this review ahead of time; it was spot on. Done correctly, “Joseph” has a wonderful mix of cheekiness and warmth. Like the review said, this has a tone of despair. The Joseph actor just flat out “didn’t get it.” And I agree totally about the cheap set design, vocals and lack of charisma by just about all the leads. The only part of this show that was any good was the “Those Canaan Nights” number featuring the brothers. The red headed kid who was the lead during this did a great job, as did the other brothers. Everything else in this play is underwhelming and not worth your time or money.

' src=

Yes, we wish we had our money back after taking our two kids.

It looked like they spent $495 on the set. It makes me wonder if the Pantages cheeseballs all their productions (or at least they have some requirements if it’s up to the producer). I’ll think about that the next time before I buy tickets there.

The brothers were good, but the other three leads were nowhere near what I’d seen before in terms of singing. If their objective was to save money on the production, they could’ve saved themselves and the audience a lot of money by not putting it on in the first place.

' src=

This review is spot on. I have been to many theater shows (large and small), and this one is by far the worst I have ever seen. I am amazed that it is possible to get so many things so wrong – especially in Los Angeles where even the small theaters draw amazing talent. Someone needs to be fired over this show as people paid hard earned money to see it. The characters and costumes were all wrong. The lead voices were weak and hard to hear. I am all for rights of everyone, but the gay aspect was overdone and thrown in everyone’s face. All of the dance scenes were too long and boring – they incorporated a casual air that didn’t work. The stage setting was cheap looking and incorporated random things that had no meaning (generally, “things” in theater have significance and depth or foreshadow something). These were meaningless and boring. I left the theater angry that I spent time and money on this show. I will go to the Pantages again because I love the theater, and I just saw The Book of Mormon there, which was fabulous. But this director’s name is going on my “no-go” list for sure.

' src=

I don’t get it. Were we in the same theater? Yes, the set was budget-level, but what amazed was that, in spite of that, this vigorous, energetic, hard-working cast really sold the show. The scene with the brothers at the table, and the Pharoah scene were hilarious. The audience responded with cheers and thunderous applause. The show was no “Les Miz” but it was great fun and very enjoyable.

' src=

I loved this show at the same venue about 20 years ago. It had warmth and charm and a beguiling narrator and a children’s chorus. You actually cared about the story and about the history of it all.

Tonight, the narrator was not beguiling and there was no children’s chorus. The actor who played Joseph did not even rise to the level of dislikeable. The charm was gone, so they Las Vegas’ed a very loud show — painfully loud.

' src=

I have seen this 5 times and this was very good. My kids loved it. I just wish the Dreamcoat was more technicolor.

I had a brilliant night! The ladies were absolutely amazing. They had great energy, great stories and a lovely report with the crowd. Their voices were flawless and even better live than on their record. Not one note out.

Most of their songs are based on positive mental health messages and they share these stories at the show.. Allison shared that ‘Half Truths’ was written about tackling anxiety and ‘Room For You’ came with Natalie’s message “We’re all very hard on ourselves.. and each other, lets give ourselves a break.. I hope the world makes Room For You”

There was so much heart and love in their show and energy, and at one moment my friend who was with me said that he saw the hands of angels descending on top of everyone’s heads.. it was more than a show it was a healing.

There was also another funny moment during the show when an alarm went off in the building at the same time Allison sang the line “I’m in danger and I’m safe” haha! It was just that someone had leaned up against the emergency exit by accident and set off the alarm but all was fine! I’m in danger but I’m safe.. quite timely!

All in all it was a beautiful show, everyone there seemed to be in awe of their talent and vocal prowess. I’d highly recommend going to see these ladies if you enjoy their music.

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Jennifer Lopez Variety Cover Story

After canceling seven dates of her first North American tour in five years amid weak ticket sales, Jennifer Lopez has renamed it to apparently broaden its scope, changing it from “This Is Me… Now” to “This Is Me… Live | The Greatest Hits.”

Popular on Variety

Upon release in February, “This Is Me… Now” struggled to find an audience, selling 14,000 copies in its first week. While the album did debut atop the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart due to 11,000 in physical sales, it arrived at No. 38 on the Billboard 200, becoming the second of her nine studio albums to bow outside the top 10.

The album was one part of a self-financed $20 million multimedia project including the tour and the two films, “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” and a documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.” Variety described the endeavor as an examination of “Lopez’s life as a serial romantic” following her romantic rekindling with actor Ben Affleck, who she married in 2022 after nearly two decades apart.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry tours Slidell tornado damage

SLIDELL, La. (WVUE) - Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry visited Slidell on Monday (April 15), assessing the damage left behind from an EF-2 tornado that tore through the city last Wednesday.

“If you’re in the roofing business in St. Tammany Parish, I think you’re going to have plenty of business unfortunately,” Landry said. “We saw a lot of blue tarps, we saw a lot of homes that lost a number of shingles. When you get to this area, you see the destruction.”

The tornado caused significant damage, leaving many residents and businesses grappling with its aftermath.

During his visit, Landry met with local officials to discuss response efforts and assess the extent of the damage. This marks the fifth day since the tornado struck, and the community is still reeling from its impact.

Landry said the state is committed to helping not only St. Tammany Parish, but the other parishes impacted by last week’s severe weather. The state likely will cover 75% of debris removal with 25% paid for by the parish.

“We want to make sure we can clean this debris out, get all of this vegetation out of the roadways and out of people’s yards so we can get back to work,” Landry said.

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer said, “We’re going to be trying to find apartments, vouchers for them, whatever resources we can for those folks to get a place to live until we can put this apartment complex together.”

A block from where Landry stopped, dozens of church volunteers are continuing to distribute water, cleaning supplies and other items.

Vickie Kelley, a church volunteers said she was initially excited to see the motorcade. “It was kind of interesting,” Kelley said. “I don’t know what the Governor said, but I was kind of wondering why he didn’t visit a facility like this that’s doing charity work.”

Another Slidell resident said, “Glad to see him out here and that he’s seeing what’s really going on.”

The governor is expected to issue an executive order declaring a State of Emergency.

Landry said, “The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) continues to work with local officials to provide support and assist with navigating the recovery process moving forward.”

Over the weekend, the American Red Cross was on the ground in Slidell, providing much-needed support to affected residents. They distributed free hot food and water while also conducting damage assessments to facilitate the dispersal of emergency funds.

Slidell Police reported one of their motorcycle officers was injured Monday while escorting Landry’s motorcade, in a collision with an unmarked Louisiana State Police vehicle. The officer was hospitalized with what the department described as “moderate injuries.”
