• Goofs The entire premise of the movie relies on the idea that being elected President of the French Republic enables you to choose your own government and pass any law you want. While Emmanuel Macron works very hard to give this impression, this is not true at all. The real power or the French Republic lies in the National Assembly, which can overthrow the government and decide the laws to pass, entirely sidelining the President and tuning him/her into not a mostly ceremonial figure, as the cohabitations (i.e. a President from Party A, but a government from Party B) under François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac have shown. In real life, a newly-elected President facing a hostile parliament would have to immediately start campaigning for the legislative elections (usually less than two months after the runoff these days) to make sure they would have a majority of députés (congressmen) in the National Assembly with which they would rule the country (the députés can even override whatever the Senate sends their way). A President suddenly changing their minds about their ideology would certainly not sit well with their electoral base nor with the backing political party, and all this would make for a particularly interesting election cycle.

5 July saw Albert Dupontel wrap filming on Second Tour   [ + see also: trailer film profile ] , his 8th directorial feature after Bernie (nominated for 1997’s Best First Film César), 9 Month Stretch   [ + see also: trailer film profile ] (garnering 2.07 million admissions in France and two Césars in 2014 in the categories of Best Actress and Best Screenplay), See You Up There   [ + see also: film review trailer film profile ] (treated to a Special Screening in San Sebastian in 2017, earning itself 2.05 million viewers in France and five Césars in 2018 in the categories of best director, adapted screenplay, photography, set design and costumes) and Bye Bye Morons   [ + see also: film review trailer film profile ] (clocking up 1.99 million admissions in France and seven Césars in 2021, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay), to name only three works.

The director (nominated for the Best Actor César in 2000, 2009, 2014, 2018 and 2021) also stars in his new opus, alongside Belgium’s Cécile de France (nominated for the 2019 Best Actress César thanks to Mademoiselle de Joncquières   [ + see also: film review trailer interview: Emmanuel Mouret film profile ] and for this year’s Best Supporting Role César via Lost Illusions   [ + see also: film review trailer interview: Xavier Giannoli film profile ] , and soon to be seen in the German series The Swarm ) and Nicolas Marié (awarded the 2021 Best Supporting Role César for Bye Bye Morons ).

Written by Albert Dupontel, the story of Second Tour revolves around Miss Pove, a disgraced political journalist who has been relegated to the football pages and who is asked to follow the ongoing presidential campaign. The favourite to win is a fifty-something man who hails from a powerful French family and is a newcomer to politics. Concerned by this candidate whom she knew when he was less clean-cut, Miss Pove embarks on an investigation which is shocking and exhilarating in equal measure…

Second Tour is produced by Catherine Bozorgan on behalf of ADCB Films / Manchester Films , in co-production with Pathé Films , who will be managing the film’s release in French cinemas on 25 October 2023 and who are also handling international sales. Pre-purchased by Canal+ , the feature film was shot in the Ile-de-France region, notably in the Bry-sur-Marne film studios, with Julien Poupard (nominated for the 2020 César in his field via Les Misérables   [ + see also: film review trailer interview: Ladj Ly film profile ] ) heading up photography.

À un moment donné, Dupontel fait un plan numérique dégueulasse complètement hors sujet, montrant un aigle pêchant un poisson. En plus d'être ridiculement laid, l'oiseau n'est pas un aigle ordinaire, mais un putain de pygargue, espèce endémique des États-Unis. L'information ne devait pas être si compliquée à trouver, car il s'agit du putain d'emblème de leur pays !

Ne mettez pas de pygargues dans les films français, s'il vous plaît.

On passe un bon moment, devant ce film sarcastique, drôle et plutôt cynique.  Rien de transcendant, que ce soit au niveau du scénario, du message ( Dupontel affirme lui-même ne pas spécialement vouloir en  faire passer) ou de la mise en scène. C’est vraiment pas nul non plus, juste un chouette moment plutôt drôle, avec un Nicolas Marié des grands soirs et une Cécile de France  très intéressante! 

Le sommet de ma soirée est d’avoir proposé à ce cher Mr Dupontel  un Pierre/feuille/ciseau avec l’enjeu de jouer dans un de ses films si je gagnais, et au moment de sortir ma meilleure pierre, il m’a sortit son meilleur doigt d’honneur! Bien joué à lui, c’est le seul truc supérieur au puit dans ce jeu! J’ai rien pu faire, mais on a quand même bien rigolé.

Second Tour is a 2023 French Black Comedy film directed by Albert Dupontel .

Pierre-Henry Mercier (Dupontel) is candidate for President of the French Republic. He performed well in the first round of the election, and may be president if he wins the second round two weeks later. Unlike the usual candidates, he is new in politics.

Miss Pove (Cécile de France) and Gus (Nicolas Marié) are journalists. Pove is a former political reporter but she has been assigned to covering football as punishment for reporting on a big shareholder of her company. She is now assigned to cover Mercier but is supposed to only ask very bland questions and put him in good light.

She secretly disobeys, as she is determined to find some dirt on him and make him fail the elections. She uncovers quite a few secrets, but also finds out that he is not so much of a bad politician as she thinks.

This film provides examples of:

• The Cracker : Pove calls a hacker when she needs something illegal. He never seems to leave his computer and keeps asking her for a date. She quite obviously dislikes him.
• Heroic Sacrifice : Mercier makes sure to be shot by an assassin in order to protect his twin brother from them.
• Intrepid Reporter : Pove goes quite far, disobeying her direction, asking very blunt questions and going through illegal means to do her investigations. She is however more interested in destroying Mercier politically, that in revealing the truth.
• No Celebrities Were Harmed : Pierre-Henry Mercier is quite similar to Emmanuel Macron especially how he appeared in French politics in 2017. He comes from a wealthy family and is new in French politics, unlike usual candidates.
• Punishment Detail : Miss Pove is normally a political reporter but she has been assigned to covering football . This is punishment for reporting on a big shareholder of her company.
• Reading Lips : Gus is a big football nerd. He learned to read lips from watching football players insult each other on screen, in several languages.
• Separated at Birth : Pove finds out that Mercier has a twin brother . She later discovers that he doesn't know that .
• The Reveal : Pove uncovers many secrets about Mercier. He happens to not know all of them.
• Thriller : While being a Black Comedy , this film also contains many elements of a political thriller, with secrets, reveals, assassination attempts and so on.

On November 30th, the Institut français du Royaume-Uni will host two exclusive screenings of Albert Dupontel’s latest film, ‘ Second Tour ,’ at London’s Cinema Lumiere. Following each screening, there will be a Q&A session with the director.

For those seeking more information about the film, here’s a brief synopsis: Nathalie Pove (Cécile de France), a political journalist demoted to reporting football news, finds herself covering the ongoing presidential campaign. The frontrunner (Albert Dupontel), a fifty-something scion of a powerful French family and a political novice, intrigues Nathalie. As an old acquaintance with a less spotless past than he claims, she embarks on a surprising and exhilarating investigation.
