Cruise to Hawaii

Why should i go on a cruise to hawaii.

Hawaii cruises in 2025 offer a range of itineraries that allow you to visit multiple islands and see all that Hawaii has to offer, especially with cruise lines such as Princess Cruises . Hawaiian cruises, such as the Waikiki Catamaran, Sunset Cruise Maui and Maui dinner cruises, are a great way to marvel at the natural wonders of the islands. Cruises to Hawaii from San Francisco also offer an opportunity to escape the mainland and experience the lush beauty of Hawaii. Whether you're interested in the beautiful beaches, lush jungles, or vibrant culture, a 5-day all-inclusive cruise allows you to discover Hawaii's captivating beauty.

How can I find a cheap cruise to Hawaii?

The easiest way to find cheap cruises to Hawaii is to sort your search results by price to put the most affordable options like Royal Caribbean and Princess at the top of your results list. You can also keep an eye out for the green discount marker on the search result situated above the price estimate. This sorting strategy works regardless of the filters you have in place. Whether you're looking for a 3-day Hawaiian cruise from Honolulu or a 5-day Hawaiian island cruise, you can search by filtering by cruise line, ship, or length. However, the best way to find affordable options is to use minimal filters and be flexible with your dates. Whether you're looking for an affordable Maui dinner cruise or a 7-day Hawaii cruise from Florida, Expedia offers a wide range of cruises to choose from.

What are the best cruise lines to Hawaii?

We work with some of the best cruise lines to Hawaii, such as Royal Caribbean , Princess , and Norwegian . All of these cruises to Hawaii are known for their entertainment and dining experiences with live performances, fine-dining restaurants, and reliable room service. Be sure to check the details of your Hawaii cruise. Even so, most cruises offer attractions like Maui dinner cruises, Kauai boat tours, or catamarans in Waikiki. Looking for a 7-day cruise to Hawaii from San Francisco? You can use search filters in your results to only show the cruise lines that you like.

How do I find Hawaii cruise deals?

When you browse Expedia, all available deals on cruise tickets to Hawaii will be marked with green text over the estimated price on your results page. This will indicate the amount of discount you could receive on the ticket price. Be sure to keep an eye out for these deals, especially when searching for a 5-day Hawaiian islands cruise or a Hawaii cruise in December 2024, for instance. Opting for a shorter sunset cruise in Honolulu can save money while going for a longer 7-day Hawaii cruise will let you visit Honolulu, Kauai , Maui , and several other destinations to get a true taste of the mahalo lifestyle.

What should I look for to find the best Hawaii cruises?

To find the best Hawaii cruise for you, use the search filters to filter the results page. So if you're looking for a cruise that will take you across multiple islands, like a 7-day Hawaii cruise in 2024 from Los Angeles, or if you have a particular cruise line you prefer, like Royal Caribbean , Princess , or Norwegian , you can filter by duration, destination or specific cruise lines. While Hawaii is composed of over 100 islands in total, most high-quality cruises to the state focus on the four main islands: Big Island , Maui , Kauai , and Oahu . Therefore, when searching for cruises to Hawaii, it is advisable to look for ones that include visits to these islands.

What are the best Hawaii cruise destinations?

A sunset Waikiki cruise is among the most popular options, but that's only scratching the surface, as you'll also find stunning coastal cities like Hilo and Kona . Hilo and Kona are both on Hawaii's Big Island, with Hilo putting you close to towering volcanoes and Kona offering some of the best beachfront and snorkeling spots in all of Hawaii. But there's more to Hawaii than just the Big Island! With a little searching, you can find a 4-day cruise from Florida or a 7-day cruise deal that hits all 4 big islands of Hawaii: Big Island , Maui , Kauai , and Oahu .

When is the best time for a Hawaii cruise vacation?

The most popular time for a cruise to Hawaii is either spring or fall, as the weather is pleasant and dry. The summer months are dry too, but the temperatures can be high for some travelers. If you're interested in whale watching, such as on a Maui whale watch cruise from Lahaina Harbor, the winter months are your best bet for a 3-day all-inclusive cruise from San Diego or California, or a Hawaii cruise in December 2024. Be prepared for some rain, though. They are called tropical rainforest islands for a reason.

How long does it take for a cruise trip to Hawaii?

The duration of a boat cruise to Hawaii can vary depending on the departure point, but leaving from ports on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles or San Francisco, can easily result in a 7-day Hawaii cruise. Despite the duration, 7-day cruises to Hawaii from California are quite popular. You won't find any 3-night cruises to Hawaii, so if you want to arrive by boat, you best have the vacation days saved up!

Can I book a luxury cruise to Hawaii?

For example, the Ovation of the Seas ship from Royal Caribbean features fun attractions kids will love like a skydiving simulator, trapeze classes, and a bar offering nonalcoholic beverages prepared by a robot. Can I book a Hawaii honeymoon cruise?

How do I book a cruise to Hawaii on Expedia?

Typically, the refund you get back depends on how far in advance you cancel. You may also be subject to only a partial refund or cancellation fees.

What are the best Hawaiian Islands cruise destinations?

  • Oahu: Cruise ships most often port in Honolulu. Hike Diamond Head, a dormant volcano, or spend the afternoon learning about U.S. history at Pearl Harbor . Sip a tropical drink on Waikiki Beach and watch local surfers catch waves as you stretch out on the beach’s white sand.
  • Maui: Cruise ships dock in Kahului and Lahaina. Whether you snap pictures of the exotic plants inside Maui Nui Botanical Garden or book a helicopter tour over the island, you’ll find the excitement you seek.
  • Hawaii: The  Big Island has two distinct sides: Kona and Hilo. There are ports in both coastal cities. Kona is home to a bustling beachside downtown district and Hilo is known for its black sand beaches. Additionally, no trip to the Big Island is complete without a visit to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

How much are cruises to Hawaii?

The pricing of Hawaiian cruises hinges on several factors:

  • Season: You can board a cruise line to Hawaii any time of year, but the dry season is most popular with tourists and lasts from April through October. Hawaiian cruises will be cheaper during the wet season from November through March, but you will experience more rainfall.
  • Duration:  Most Hawaiian cruises are about 7 nights long, with some lasting up to 15. The price of your getaway will increase as the length of your journey does. Check to see which cruise itineraries work best for your schedule and budget.
  • Cruise Line: Do you want an affordable cruise line with budget-friendly accommodations and meals, or a luxury cruise line that offers excursions like swimming with dolphins or repelling down waterfalls? Pride of America , which is owned and operated by Norwegian Cruise Line , is a great choice thanks to its extensive onboard dining options (19 in total!), and because the cruise line travels to multiple Hawaiian Islands.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Hawaii

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Hawaii flight deals.
  • If you’re looking for beach- and family-friendly destinations when booking your flights to Hawaii, look for flights into the islands of Kauai, Big Island, Maui, and Oahu. They are served by Lihue Airport (LIH), Kona International Airport (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO), Kahului Airport (OGG), and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), respectively.
  • If you want to take your time exploring the islands, you can fly from the mainland into Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu on Oahu island, and then take domestic flights to the other islands. Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest are two of the companies that operate inter-island flights.
  • Most first-time travelers to Hawaii choose Maui as their destination, but keep in mind that there are fewer nonstop flights from the continental US landing at Maui’s Kahului Airport. Most flights from the mainland connect via the Honolulu airport on Oahu island.
  • If you’re planning to go on whale-watching tours, look for flights to Hawaii on the island of Kauai. Although practically every island is excellent for whale-watching activities, Kauai has a greater range of possible spotting locations.
  • For golfers, Hawaii means golf courses that are as gorgeous as they are high-quality. If you don’t know where to start, consider traveling to the airport of Oahu. With 37 golf clubs, it’s the island with the most golf courses in America’s 50th state.

Top 5 airlines flying to Hawaii

Great. Loved that there was WiFi on flight to keep in touch and excellent service of beverages and snacks.

Business class is great. New airplane, very comfortable, better than some of the major airlines I am used to

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

I had back trouble prior to my flight and everyone was great about helping me.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Everything was good except for deplaning in NY. Took way too long!!

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

Surprisingly easy! I was hesitant to try this, but the cost swayed me. I actually felt like I had less stress than all the taxiing and possible delays that occur with short regional flights where you spend less time in the air than getting to and from the plane..

This flight was delayed multiple times and eventually canceled around 2-3ish. Original take off time was around 10:30am. By 3, there were no other options out of Houston, so stuck in Houston for from 3pm - 11am the next day.

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

The plane was dirty and the in seat air wasn't blowing as planes usually do.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

All flights were on time and boarding was issue free

Terrible! The plane was old and you are required to connect your own device to their Wi-Fi rather than have entertainment options in the back of the seat in front of you. The Wi-Fi went out during the flight and there was only one plug for the devices every two seats. Three out of five surrounding my family did not work. The seats and spaces under them were so small I could not fit my backpack, which I’ve always brought on flights and fit before no problem. The crew were unpleasant and patronizing.

Great! The plane was decently sized and comfortable. The staff was nice and there was great in flight entertainment

Even though we left CMI late, we mostly made up the time.

Delayed almost 4 hours for a 45 minute flight with no explanation.

Again, multiple delays and I eventually just canceled and drove!

Great crew. We were delayed so that late passengers could get on the flight. Love the bedding in business class. Good food. Great experience.

The CX617 from HK to BKK was delayed more than 1.5 hours.

Horrible - they lied to me about baggage & boarding, even though I specifically spoke to their agents the day before my flight about my issue. When I showed up they did not let me board and stranded me at my airport until I bought a new flight with money I did not have to spend.

All four American Airlines flights I took in last seven days were delayed. Caused me loads of problems, missed meetings, loss of time and money.

American cancelled our flight home. Zero option for hotel, alternative transportation and took 3 hours to find our bags so we could take a 3 hour UBER ride home on our dime. Never flying AA again.

They gave my seat away although it was a connecting flight with them and the flight was a bit delayed.

Flight was cancelled had to move to another gate late again no internet paid for the month and never can use it waste of money

For it to have left on time! Instead of two hours early with zero notice

Flight kept delayed from morning to late afternoon so I had to make other arrangements

Crew was nice, explained emergency protocol very well. Flight took off and arrived on time. Pilot explained the small delay that occurred with docking and providing updates. I would definitely fly spirit again.

Terrible… missed our flight due to ridiculously long time to go thru baggage check-in!

The crew was not great or professional. It seemed like they didn't really want to be there. A true lack of effort for accommodating customers.

Everything was really good but the seats are not very comfortable.

I paid for WiFi, but it (WiFi) was very very slow, will never take again! Impossible open Utube 😤😤😤

I had no legroom, although I paid for extra legroom. I could barely put my bag in front of my feet and under the seat. The Wi-Fi was horrible. In fact the flight attendant said that they had to reboot it and see if it was going to work and never did.

The guy with severe body odor sat next to me. For the whole duration of the flight it was a torture. The airline should have better policy on limiting people with bad body odor to board the flight. Passengers should not be the ones to endure bad odor for the whole duration of the flight. The airline should be e the one to ensure decent air quality for ever passenger.

Overall it was a miserable experience... I will never fly spirit for more than a 3 hour flight or overnight.

I checked a bag because it was $5 less than carry on. They managed to lose my bag on a 2.5 hr direct flight! Frontier has no airport staff at baggage claim to help. As soon as I got home around 11 pm I tried to use their online system to file the claim for lost bag - system wouldn't take the # on my baggage claim ticket - said it was not the correct number. Also said that I had not checked a bag, which wasn't true - even my online boarding pass showed that I had checked a bag. Wasted about an hour on that process with no luck. Tried again in the morning - same thing. So tried online chat with Frontier bot - waited 35-40" twice to be connected to a baggage agent and it never happened. Eventually drove to PDX after work and waited 2 hrs for the Frontier ticket agents to arrive prior to the next Frontier flight out of PDX and FINALLY got some help from one of them, to take me to lost luggage area where I was able to retrive my bag. Probably took 4-5 hrs. of my time and endless frustration to get my bag. This was my first -- and LAST -- experience flying Frontier Airlines. Check-in was also extremely difficult and time consuming. The flight itself (and staff) were fine but everything else about the experience was a total disaster! The fact that Frontier literally has NO WAY to connect to a human voice for customer service (in this case for lost luggage) is the WORST!!!!!

Frontier is a crappy airline nothing about it is honest

I didn't get to do this flight l, hard to review

Not good 😐 Over priced baggage fees Small hard seats No wifi or entertainment options 😕

Didn't like anything!! Horrible flight. Small seating area and hard seats. Butt was sore after 2 hour flight to Seattle No entertainment or free refreshments No wifi or USB charging receptacles to charge phone entoute like other airliners Luggage rates were 3 times as much as competitors. Difficult to navigate online luggue process to pre pay before flight Overall bad experience WILL NEVER RIDE OR RECOMMEND FRONTIER TO FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS!!! THIS IS A SHAME!! MOST MESERIBLE FLIGHT OF MY LIFE!! AND I THOUGHT SPIRIT WAS 👎 YOU GOT THEM BEAD HANDS DOWN!!

Flight was a little late taking off. Seats are too upright, no ports to charge devices, no wifi, no entertainment

Six hour delay. Poor customer service. No voucher. Bad communication. Missed important appointments.

Our flight was delayed an hour, then when we got to board our flight finally, we were waiting in our seats for take off for 45 minutes before it was communicated that there was a maintenance issue therefore we waited on the plane for over an hour while that was resolved. We did not get to Phoenix until almost 3 hours after we were originally supposed to. This was the first and last time I will be flying Frontier.

Flight was canceled with little warning. Flight was rebooked through Ontario, California and connecting flight was delayed by over three hours. Frontier is living up to their Greyhound of the skies reputation for sure.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Hawaii Cruise Guide

Immerse yourself in the natural wonders of this tropical archipelago, where you’ll discover magnificent beaches, lush landscapes, and a delectable array of seafood specialties.

The Hawaiian islands have become synonymous with paradise, and the best way to explore the natural beauty of these islands is to embark on a Hawaii cruise. From palm-fringed beaches and vibrant coral reefs to active volcanoes and plunging sea cliffs, each island you encounter during your Hawaii cruise offers a unique experience. As you cruise along the different islands, you may fall in love with bustling Honolulu on the island of Oahu, the secluded beaches of Lanai, or the verdant greenery of Kauai. In Hawaii, there is an island for every traveler.

Majestic, world-class ships and intimate, boutique-style vessels all cruise to Hawaii’s archipelago, with most departures from California, Vancouver and Honolulu. With a Hawaii cruise, you get the benefit of traveling to multiple islands in comfort and style, without any of the hassle. And, the itineraries you have to choose from are just as diverse as the Hawaiian islands themselves.

On the Big Island you can hike around Akaka Falls, one of the island’s most beautiful waterfalls. In Maui you can participate in numerous outdoor adventures such as whale watching, outrigger canoeing, and snorkeling around Molokini Crater. Kauai’s legendary beauty ranges from lush mountain ranges to roaring sea cliffs, which provides the perfect backdrop for adventure seekers. If relaxing on a beach is what you’re after, Oahu has an array of spectacular beaches for you to choose from.

Onboard, you can still capture the spirit and soul of Hawaii as you dine on a Hawaiian seafood salad called poke, learn how to perform a hula dance, and watch entertaining folkloric performances. Make sure you keep your camera on hand as you gaze out at the picturesque valleys and shimmering ocean from the comfort of your cruise liner; you may just spot a whale breeching the waters!

The best time to embark on your Hawaii cruise vacation is during the winter, when travelers are fleeing the cold weather for the warmer climate of the tropics. November through May is also the best time to glimpse humpback whales cresting the ocean waters. Fewer cruise lines operate in Hawaii during the height of summer, but you can still find some great Hawaii cruise deals before and after the months of July and August, as well as from Thanksgiving to mid-December.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

Booking Your Flight and Cruise

getting ready to board a plane

So, you’re dreaming of a tropical getaway to Hawaii and want to explore the beautiful islands by both air and sea?

You’re in for a treat! In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of booking your flight and cruise, ensuring a smooth and memorable vacation. Let’s get started!

Search flight and cruise together or separately

When it comes to booking your flight and cruise to Hawaii, you have two options – searching for them together as a package or separately . Both options have their advantages, so it ultimately depends on your preferences and budget.

If you choose to search for a flight and cruise package together, you’ll have the convenience of booking everything in one go. This can save you time and possibly money, as travel companies often offer discounts when you book both components together.

Additionally, opting for a package can simplify logistics , as the company will likely take care of the transfer between the airport and cruise port.

On the other hand, booking your flight and cruise separately gives you more flexibility and control over your itinerary. You can choose your preferred airline and flight times, as well as select the cruise line and ship that best suits your preferences.

This option allows you to customize your trip according to your specific needs and desires.

Comparing costs: packages vs separate

When considering the costs of booking a flight and cruise to Hawaii, it’s important to compare both package deals and separate bookings.

While package deals may seem enticing with their discounted prices, it’s crucial to carefully examine what’s included in the package.

Some package deals may include additional perks such as onboard credits, excursions, or all-inclusive amenities. However, if you prefer more flexibility in choosing your accommodations or activities, booking separately may be the better option for you.

It’s also worth noting that prices can vary depending on the time of year you plan to travel. Peak seasons, such as summer or holidays, tend to have higher prices compared to off-peak seasons . So, be sure to consider the timing of your trip when comparing costs.

Using miles and points for flights

If you’re a frequent traveler or a member of an airline or credit card loyalty program, you may have accumulated miles or points that can be used towards your flights. This can be a great way to save money on your trip to Hawaii.

Check with your airline or credit card provider to see if they offer any redemption options for flights to Hawaii.

Some programs even have partnerships with specific airlines, allowing you to transfer your points and miles for a discounted or even free flight.

Remember to book your flights early , as award seats can be limited. It’s also important to be flexible with your travel dates to increase your chances of finding available award flights.

For more information on using miles and points for flights, you can visit websites like The Points Guy or Airfarewatchdog .

Planning Your Time in Hawaii

Waikiki Hawaii

When it comes to planning your time in Hawaii, it’s important to consider a few key factors.

Whether you’re flying to Hawaii and then cruising the islands or vice versa, you’ll want to make the most of your time and explore all that these beautiful islands have to offer. Here are some tips to help you plan your itinerary.

Allowing time for island explorations

One of the great things about Hawaii is the diversity of its islands. Each island has its own unique charm and attractions, so it’s important to allocate enough time to explore each one.

Consider spending at least a few days on each island to truly experience its beauty and immerse yourself in the local culture.

For example, on the Big Island of Hawaii , you can visit the stunning Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and witness the power of an active volcano. On Maui, you can explore the famous Road to Hana and see breathtaking waterfalls and scenic coastal views. And on Kauai, you can hike the stunning Na Pali Coas t or take a scenic helicopter tour over the island’s lush landscapes.

Optimizing time between flight and cruise

If you’re flying to Hawaii and then cruising the islands, it’s important to optimize your time between your flight arrival and the start of your cruise.

One option is to arrive a day or two before your cruise and spend some time exploring the island where your cruise will depart from . This way, you can relax, adjust to the time zone, and start your vacation with a mini island adventure.

Another option is to arrive on the same day as your cruise departure, but make sure to allow enough time for transportation from the airport to the cruise terminal.

Keep in mind that flight delays or other unexpected events can happen, so it’s always a good idea to give yourself a buffer of a few hours.

Visiting Oahu before or after your cruise

If your cruise departs from or ends in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, you might consider spending some extra time exploring this vibrant island before or after your cruise.

Oahu is home to famous attractions such as Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbor, and the iconic Diamond Head crater. You can also experience the unique blend of Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures in the lively city of Honolulu.

Whether you choose to visit Oahu before or after your cruise, make sure to plan your time accordingly. If you have limited time, you can focus on the must-see attractions in Honolulu.

However, if you have a few extra days, consider renting a car and exploring the island’s beautiful beaches, lush mountains, and charming small towns.

Planning your time in Hawaii requires careful consideration and a bit of flexibility. By allowing enough time for island explorations, optimizing your time between your flight and cruise, and considering a visit to Oahu, you can make the most of your Hawaiian vacation and create unforgettable memories.

With stunning scenery, incredible beaches, and the luxury of island-hopping aboard a cruise ship, combining a flight and cruise is a fantastic way to experience the diversity and beauty of Hawaii.

Careful planning is necessary to optimize your time on the islands and the logistics between flight and cruise. But the rewards are a vacation that provides the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation and discovery in one of the world’s most remarkable beach destinations.

When you’re making the big trip to Hawaii, you might plan on island hopping. But what’s the easiest way to get around? And is it worth the trip?

Hawaii island hopping is absolutely worth it. The islands are all incredibly different and it’s easy to get from island to island. But it’s important to know that island hopping can be time-consuming so you want to make sure your trip is long enough for these extra travel days.

To help you plan your trip, let’s get into the details.

Now that you’re about to know how to go inter-island like a pro, make sure you have the other parts of your trip figured out: 1. We use Discount Hawaii Car Rental 95% of the time and it has saved us thousands 2. If you haven’t booked your stay, check out our Where to Stay database 3. We’ve searched high and low for the absolute best tours & activities on each island 4. Don’t leave home without our itineraries . Really.

Options for Hawaii Island Hopping:

If you’re looking to island-hop in Hawaii, you have a few options. Depending on what islands you’re traveling between, you can get there by airplane or ferry. You can also book an inter-island cruise or a guided tour to island hop for a day.

Let’s look at these options more in-depth:

1. Flying between Hawaiian islands

Flying between the Hawaiian islands is the most popular and least expensive way to island hop.

Hawaii island hopping inter-island flights

Commercial Airlines offering inter-island flights:

There are three commercial airlines that offer inter-island flights in Hawaii:

1. Hawaiian Airlines : The largest operator of flights to and from Hawaii, Hawaiian Airlines has the inter-island routes covered. On Hawaiian Airlines, you can find direct flights between Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. Hawaiian Airlines flies into the major airports on each island: Honolulu, Oahu (HNL), Kahului, Maui (OGG), Lihue, Kauai (LIH), Kona, Hawaii (KOA), and Hilo, Hawaii (ITO).

2. Southwest Airlines : The newest entrant to inter-island travel, Southwest Airlines operates on similar routes to Hawaiian Airlines. You’ll get direct flights between the four major islands. Known for their low-cost fares, they’re generally your cheapest option for inter-island flying (though Hawaiian Airlines has extremely competitive fares).

3. Mokulele Airlines : Mokulele Airlines operates small, turbo-prop planes that fly from the main airports as well as smaller airports on the islands. It is the only airline to fly to both Molokai and Lanai. On the Big Island, it flies out of Hilo (ITO) and Kona (KOA) as well as Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE). And on Maui, it flies out of both Kahului (OGG) as well as Kapalua (JHM). Just like the other airlines, it also flies out of Honolulu (HNL) and Lihue (LIH).

Things to Consider When Between Southwest and Hawaiian Flying Interisland:

  • Southwest offers free checked bags, a big savings unless you qualify for free bags on Hawaiian.
  • Hawaiian Airlines provides an island vibe with colorful decor and serves juice (passion orange nectar or something similar).
  • Hawaiian Airlines offers better options for seat assignments. If you book early, you can reserve a free seat. They also offer reasonably priced extra legroom upgrades.
  • Hawaiian Airlines has premium options like first-class and extended legroom in economy.
  • If you want USB charging at your seat, choose Southwest (pending fleet-wide installation).
  • Southwest makes canceling and rebooking simpler. Hawaiian does not offer the ability to re-deposit and use funds as easily as Southwest.

Airports on Each Island (+ map):

Each Hawaiian island that you can visit has at least one airport, which makes island hopping a breeze. The airport codes for each airport are:

Oahu: Daniel K. Inouye Airport in Honolulu (HNL)

Maui: Kahului Airport (OGG) Kapalua Airport (JHM)

Hawai’i (Big Island): Hilo International Airport (ITO) Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE)

Kauai: Lihue Airport (LIH)

Lana’i: Lana’i Aiport (LNY)

Molokai: Molokai Airport (MKK)

How much does it cost to travel between the Hawaiian Islands?

Flights between each Hawaiian island are short: expect them to last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes for a direct flight. But even though the flight itself is short, when you’re island hopping in Hawaii, the entire process can easily take 4 to 5 hours (door to door). You’ll need to drive to the airport, return your rental car, go through security, fly to the next island, pick up a new rental car, and check into your hotel.

Expect your travel day to take even longer if you aren’t able to get a direct flight. Many of the inter-island flight options require a stop in Honolulu before heading onto your final destination.

If you have the time, you should consider visiting multiple islands on your trip to Hawaii. Each island offers something very unique and different. But make sure you’re giving yourself enough time on each island before moving to the next.

We generally recommend that you spend at least 5 days on each island that you visit. Ideally, you’ll be able to spend a little more time on each island to fully experience it as well as relax.  One ambitious newsletter reading couple visited all 4 of the major Hawaiian island in just 13 days, and while we don’t recommend it, we let them write all about it and share their itinerary .

Yes, you can spend less time on an island but your trip will likely feel rushed and you’ll miss out on some of the features that make each island so unique and spectacular.

I'm the co-founder, with my husband Jordan, of The Hawaii Vacation Guide. We have lived on Maui and Oahu and continue to travel, experience, and learn about the Hawaiian Islands. We travel with our kids, Henry and Edith. I am a planner! I love to plan trips from the mainland and island-hopping adventures, excursion days, and everything in-between. I spend a lot of my time in Hawai'i on a SUP and my favorite time of year in Hawai'i is whale season!

Frequently asked questions

There are six cruise ports in Hawaii spread across the four main islands. Depending on the length of your cruise, you will visit one island or all of them!

Almost every Hawaiian cruise will visit Honolulu, the capital city, on the island of Oahu. It’s most famous for Waikiki Beach, the Pearl Harbour National Memorial and it’s incredible surf beaches.

There are two ports on the island of Maui – Kahului Harbor and Lahaina. This island is known for its gorgeous beaches, excellent snorkelling, rugged hiking trails, the Haleakala Crater volcano and the Road to Hana drive.

Port of Hilo and Kailua Kona are the ports on the island of Hawaii, commonly called the Big Island. Shore excursions here will take you to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, coffee plantations and yet more lovely beaches.

Sitting at the far north of Hawaii, Kaua’i is known as the Garden Island. Marvel at the grand canyons, tropical rainforest, white sand beaches, and iconic Napali Coastline.

Yes – it will just take you a while to get there! A number of cruise lines run Transpacific cruises from Australia to Hawaii, including Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Carnival Cruises. These cruises will take at least two weeks and generally sail from Sydney via New Zealand and some South Pacific islands.

Hawaii is part of the United States of America, so the same entry requirements apply here. Citizens of 38 different nations don’t need a visa, but will need to apply for a Visa Waiver through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before they travel to Hawaii. Be sure to check with your relevant government authority before you travel what your requirements for entry are.

Tipping policies vary, but most lines will have a policy of automatically adding a daily gratuity charge to your onboard account. This is usually around USD$15-20 a day. You may also see an automatic service charge added to extras like drinks or spa treatments. There is no expectation for you to tip the crew on top of this. Be aware that when you’re ashore in Hawaii, you will be expected to tip at bars and restaurants – this is usually between 15-25% of the total bill.

Large ships cruising to Hawaii will have multiple restaurants on board, offering a mix of international cuisines and Hawaiian specialties. Most ships will restock during their time in the islands, so will pick up local ingredients like fresh seafood and tropical fruits. As the Pride of America is permanently based in Hawaii, its menu features many Hawaiian dishes like pineapple beurre blanc with fresh seafood and papaya with Asian short ribs. Princess Cruises also tailors its special Aloha Spirit menu to the islands, serving slow roasted luau pork, Kona shrimp, macadamia-infused desserts and Hawaiian cocktails.

Hawaii is a year-round destination and whenever you visit you’ll be charmed by its golden beaches, lush jungle and vibrant culture. The most popular time to visit is the winter season between October and April. You can still expect great weather and minimal rain. Most cruise lines will visit during this period and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America is the only ship sailing here year-round.

Absolutely! There are cruises specifically designed for inter-island exploration in Hawaii. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America ship is based in Hawaii and sails through the islands year-round. The seven-day round-trip itinerary departs from Honolulu and visits four ports across Maui, the Big Island and Kaua’i. Expedition cruisers can also choose an eight-day itinerary visiting smaller and more remote ports.

Expect to spend a lot of time outside on your port stops, swimming at pristine beaches, surfing world-famous waves, snorkelling on coral reefs and hiking through green jungle. On the Big Island, you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, or hike to the summit of the dormant Mauna Kea. Hawaii’s whale watching season runs from November to April, peaking from January to March. You should be able to spot them from the deck of your ship, from the shore on the islands or on a whale watching tour. Learn about Hawaii’s military history at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, where you can walk on a platform above a sunken battleship. You will also get to experience the rich Hawaiian culture with traditional performances, hula dancing, arts and crafts, music and maybe even a luau feast.

The only major adults’ only cruise line that sails to Hawaii is Viking Cruises – you’ll never find any kids on board this line. Expedition vessel Safari Explorer only welcomes children aged over 12 (except during special family-friendly sailings). Many of the other lines that sail to Hawaii have dedicated adults’ only areas on board with special suites, pools, restaurants and bars just for the grown ups.

You sure can – and we think you should. Wherever your cruise finishes, you’re not far from some of Hawaii’s most popular holiday spots or spectacular natural wonders. If you finish in Honolulu, the glitzy resorts of Waikiki Beach are just a few minutes away. It’s also easy to fly between the islands if you want to explore further. Coordinate with your cruise line when you book or ask your Flight Centre travel expert for their recommendations.

GO CHASING WATERFALLS

Hawaiian cruises.

Experience Aloha with a cruise to Hawaii.

Just the word "Hawaii" conjures visions of turquoise waves lapping at colourful sand and a rich historical tapestry that's as Polynesian as it is American: a welcoming culture that you can distil into a single word – Aloha. Once you arrive, trace the history of Pearl Harbour on Oahu, where you can tour battleships and see the memorial to that fateful day in 1941. Cruise to Hawaii and head to the Big Island to scale volcanoes like Mount Kilauea and chase waterfalls on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Or enjoy the sun and surf on the remote shores of Kauai and Maui. Discover the magic with a Hawaiian cruise.

Hawaii Rainforest

LET ADVENTURE FLOW

Hawaii offers some of the world's best in outdoor exploration. The best Hawaii cruises allow you to trek through the lush Hana Rainforest, or enjoy a more volcanic experience on the Big Island. Marvel at the lava flows of Kilauea, or savour the coffee that grows in the soil made fertile by millions of years of eruptions.

Hawaii Beach With City View

HIT THE BEACH

Hawaii is a group of islands with hundreds of beaches. Do you cruise to Oahu and hit Waikiki – where the people-watching is as good as the tanning – or to the scenic Napali Coast of underrated Kauai? Decisions, decisions.

Hawaii Forest Waterfall

RAINFOREST BATHE

Hawaii offers a tropical twist on the hip travel hobby called "forest bathing". It's all the rage among spiritually minded travellers these days and a great way to see nature close. Hike to Rainbow Falls on the Big Island, or through the lush Hana Rainforest on Maui.

Hawaii Volcano

PAL AROUND WITH PELE

The volcano goddess Pele takes many forms in Hawaii. Hawaii is the United States' most volcanic state, but your experience doesn't have to be death-defying. Daredevils will want to get up close and personal with the active lava flow of Kilauea, but you could instead hike up Mauna Loa, which is extinct.

Honolulu Iolani Palace

DIVE INTO THE CULTURE

Hawaii might look like a postcard, but it's more than just a pretty face. Your Hawaii cruise will let you counterbalance naps on Waikiki with a tour of the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbour or a visit to Iolani Palace, the residence of Hawaii's royal family.

Hawaii USS Arizona Memorial

MONUMENTS OF THE PAST

No trip to Oahu is complete without paying your respects to the victims of Pearl Harbour at the USS Arizona Memorial. However, there's a lot more to Hawaiian history. You should also learn about Hawaii's Polynesian heritage at Honolulu's Iolani Palace, the former home of the long-ruling Kamehameha dynasty.

Kona Coffee from Hawaii

GET TO KNOW YOUR MORNING JOE

When imagining Hawaiian drinks, you might think of a fruity drink with an umbrella, but the state is the only permanent coffee producer in the US. Head to the Big Island to tour the plantations where the good stuff is grown, from famous Kona Coffee to craft producer Mount Thunder.

Polynesian Cultural Center

WALK IN THE WAYS OF OLD

Hawaii's Polynesian past is still palpable today. On Oahu, check out the Polynesian Cultural Centre, where you can tour six different recreations of traditional villages. Watch a Polynesian dance, play ancient games that have been handed down through the generations and learn the old ways of fishing without a net.

Aerial Quantum of the Seas

QUANTUM OF THE SEAS

Quantum of the Seas® takes you on an epic adventure to the best of Hawaii. Hang ten on Waikiki Beach one minute. Then savour a fresh roast of coffee grown in the ancient lava fields of Kailua Kona the next. And in between, fill your days with endless onboard thrills like RipCord® by iFLY® skydiving simulator, delicious dining options and top-notch entertainment.

Plan some slower days during your trip to jibe with the leisure-loving locals. The phrase 'island time' isn't a joke.

Don't discount mainstream destinations like Oahu's Pearl Harbour and Kilauea on the Big Island – they're popular for a reason!

While some best practices (like not walking too close to volcanoes) are obvious, be aware of lesser-known laws. For example, it's actually illegal to hike up Honolulu's popular Haiku Stairs.

CUISINE POI, PORK AND POKE

Seafood is an important part of the Hawaiian diet, but there's so much more to enjoy. Visit Hawaii and prepare for a feast like no other, with nods to Polynesia, Japan and even the American heartland.

Hawaii Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl

Poke bowls are a great way to enjoy Hawaii's renowned ahi tuna. Ahi tuna has become famous all over America, most commonly seared and added to Asian-style salads. The best way to sample this Hawaiian favourite, however, is in bowl form. There are several varieties of poke, with modern versions substituting avocado and spicy mayo for classic accompaniments like seaweed and rice.

Polynesian Pork Plate

POLYNESIAN PORK

Is there any meal more Polynesian than a whole, roasted pig? Vegetarians have plenty of choices in Hawaii, but this isn't one of them. After cooking for hours over an open flame, this tender meat is plucked off the bone and plated, or sandwiched in a Hawaiian roll.

Hawaii Taro Root Poi

POI, THE TASTY PASTE

Taro root is a common food in the Asia-Pacific region, but usually not in the US – outside of Hawaii, at least. The purple paste known as poi is a puree of this much-loved root vegetable, and it pairs well with other Hawaiian staples, such as the aforementioned Kalua pork (dip it!) and fresh fish.

flights and cruises to hawaii

Heaps of delicious food and dancing usually translate to a luau in Hawaii, but on the Big Island, it can also mean the Paniolo Sunset BBQ dinner in the rolling green pastures of Waimea. The weekly dinner and dancing event at Kahua Ranch is inspired by the Hawaiian Islands’ long history of cattle ranching, which reaches all the way back to King Kamehameha I.

In an entertaining account from Big Island country singer Dave Toland, cattle arrived in the Hawaiian Islands as a gift from British explorer Captain George Vancouver to the king in the late 1700s. That one bull and six cows grew to become a major industry out of Hawaii, which is historically better known for its sugar cane plantations.

‘Paniolo’ refers to cowboys in Hawaiian, and according to Toland, the word came from the interaction between Mexican vaqueros who arrived to assist the burgeoning industry and Hawaiians who did not yet know how to wrangle cattle.

“When them vaqueros came over here, they were called Espanols, and they spoke what they call Espanol,” Toland said. “Well, they couldn’t speak a word of Hawaiian. And them Hawaiian folks, they couldn’t speak one word of Espanol. And the problem is that in the Hawaiian alphabet, there ain’t no S. So when the Hawaiians tried to pronounce Espanol, it came out paniolo.”

I heard the brief history lesson over the flames of a fire pit, not far from an overlook with expansive views of rolling green hills stretching all the way to the ocean. The views can deliver spectacular sunsets thanks to Hawaii microclimates that can bring cream puff clouds over the horizon and, occasionally, a rainbow over the hills.

Dinner, eaten at communal tables, is a tightly curated menu of delicious offerings – prime rib, barbecue chicken, asparagus, potatoes, baked beans, sweet rolls and salad. Dessert recently included thick brownie slabs and macadamia nut pie. Alcohol is served at a cash bar, while water, canned sodas and fruit juices, coffee, and hot chocolate are free.

Multiple trips to the food table are encouraged, but given the large oval plates and heaping servings given on the first round, another trip may not be necessary. All that food can be worked off with some line dancing to live music, a game of horseshoes or cornhole, or attempting to learn how to rope a steer. Attendees can also brand a piece of wood as a souvenir, grab a freshly made s’more, or take advantage of the 2,000-foot elevation to view the stars  – if they’re lucky, an astronomer might be on hand with a powerful telescope.

The three-hour dinner is priced at $85 per adult and $42.50 per child over 5 years old. For comparison, admission to a luau on the Big Island starts at $130+ per person.

Most of the year, the Paniolo Sunset BBQ Dinner occurs weekly on Wednesdays, but Monday nights are added during the summer tourist season. Reservations must be made in advance online.

Cruise ships under investigation after sailing illegally close to Hawaii's protected coast

flights and cruises to hawaii

Hawaii state officials are investigating two cruise ships that sailed illegally close to Kauai’s protected Na Pali Coastline, according to an emailed statement by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) on Tuesday.

“Images of the ships have been circulating on social media, and vigilant kamaaina (locals) alerted the authorities to the issue,” the release said.

In the statement, HTA said it is in contact with the cruise lines as other cruise operators who sail to Hawaii to “underscore the importance of compliance with all state and local regulations in our islands.”

The Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), which governs Hawaii’s nearshore waters, declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.

DLNR and HTA did not confirm which cruise lines were sailing “much closer to Kauaʻi’s north shore than allowed by state regulations.” However, posts on social media show one of the ships to be the Celebrity Edge, which is operated by Celebrity Cruises and has the capacity to hold almost 3,000 passengers.

“We have robust policies in place to maintain compliance with local regulations around the world," a spokesperson for Celebrity's parent company, Royal Caribbean Group, said in an emailed statement. "We will continue to assess our policies and take necessary steps to ensure we continue to operate in the most responsible manner possible."

With striking cliffs, waterfalls and lush valleys, the Na Pali Coast is one of Hawaii's iconic shorelines. This is partially due to its appearance in popular movies like, "King Kong," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and "Jurassic Park."

Home to endemic flora and fauna, the state park comprises over 3,500 protected acres. It is also a sacred place where the ancient Native Hawaiians once lived, and their heiaus (temples) and petroglyphs can still be found there today.

The waters surrounding the coastline are also protected. Since 1988, state law prohibits commercial vessels with 50 or more passengers from operating “within the Na Pali Coast ocean waters.” These waters are defined as 3,000 feet seaward along the eastern boundary of Moloaa Bay and the southernmost boundary of the Na Pali Coast State Park.

DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement told Hawaii News Now it received “numerous reports” from residents who spotted the cruise ships sailing in “very shallow water” at approximately only 1,000 feet offshore last week.

“Some of the shots that were taken from the air actually showed the sand being disturbed at the bottom, so all of these environmental impacts that it created was very upsetting to me,” Presley Wann, a Kauai resident, told Hawaii News Now.

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

Air Vanuatu files for bankruptcy protection after canceling all international flights

Air Vanuatu has filed for bankruptcy protection a day after it cancelled all international flights, stranding thousands of travelers

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Air Vanuatu filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday a day after the South Pacific state-owned carrier cancelled all international flights, stranding thousands of travelers.

The airline on Wednesday cancelled more than 20 flights to and from the Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane, and the New Zealand city of Auckland for the rest of the week. The airline said it was the result of “extended maintenance requirements” on their aircraft.

Ernst & Young Australia’s Morgan Kelly, Justin Walsh and Andrew Hanson were appointed liquidators in an equivalent of a U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the firm said in a statement. The liquidators said safety and maintenance checks would be made before normal operations resumed.

Kelly said the airline’s existing management team would remain in place.

“Air Vanuatu is critical to the people of the Republic of Vanuatu and a strategically important business to the nation,” Kelly said. “Our team is working closely with management to ensure continuity of service to customers and to ensure services continue as seamlessly as possible.”

“The outlook for the airline is positive, despite pressures on the broader industry, and we will be focused on securing the future of this strategically vital national carrier,” he added.

Affected travelers would be informed of this disruption and rebooked on flights as soon as operations resumed, the statement said.

Air Vanuatu operates four planes, including one Boeing 737 and three turboprop planes.

Tourism contributed 40% of Vanuatu’s gross domestic product.

The Vanuatu Tourism Office apologized to travelers for the disruption.

“This is an evolving situation and we will continue to post updates,” the office said in a statement.

The office's chief executive Adela Issachar said the administrator was in discussions with Virgin Australia and Fiji Airways, airlines that currently service Vanuatu, about flying stranded passengers.

“The updated schedule should be advised soon so we're all looking forward for that,” Issachar told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Kelly said Air Vanuatu had been impacted by labor shortages, rising operating costs, elevated interest rates and tropical cyclones on tourist numbers in recent years.

“We’ll be looking at all options. And the Vanuatu government has indicated that they would prefer to resume operations as quickly as possible. Our role as voluntary liquidators will be to look at to assess all options to achieve that and make that sustainable,” Kelly told reporters.

“So that might involve some kind of sale process, it may involve some kind of partnership arrangement with another airline,” Kelly added.

Australian tourist Sally Witchalls said she and four friends had been checking out of their Port Vila hotel on Wednesday morning when they were told at reception that their Air Vanuatu flight would not fly that day.

She has since discovered that her travel insurance did not cover an airline going into voluntary administration, as Air Vanuatu had done, or bankrupt.

“We’re now on our own working out how we pay for the accommodation from here on out while we wait to see how the situation with Air Vanuatu unfolds,” Witchalls told ABC.

Two cruise ships, which are under the Royal Caribbean umbrella, recently came close enough to Kauai’s north shore that residents asked local authorities to investigate.

The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority said it has engaged government authorities and the cruise industry to discuss the incident after images of the ships began circulating on social media.

Social media shows the Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Edge near the Na Pali Coast during a May 1 visit to Kauai. Later that same day, social media imagery shows Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas passing near the coast while on a repositioning sail. Royal Caribbean could not be reached for an immediate comment.

Kalani Ka‘ana‘ana, who transitioned into the role of HTA chief stewardship officer in January as part of HTA’s increasing focus on destination management and stewardship, said the Department of Land and Natural Resources, which governs Hawaii’s near-shore waters, is investigating the incidents. Hawaii Administrative Rules require at least 3,000 feet seaward from shore in the Na Pali Coast ocean waters, and prohibit commercial vessels with a carrying capacity of 50 or more passengers from operating there.

Ka‘ana‘ana said HTA has contacted Royal Caribbean along with other cruise operators that visit Hawaii to underscore the importance of compliance with all state and local regulations.

“We will let DLNR’s investigation reach its conclusion. But I think for us, we want to impress upon the cruise operators the sensitivity both ecologically and culturally to the Na Pali Coast and the Kauai community as well as the Hawaii community in general,” he said.

Ka‘ana‘ana said HTA is thankful to the community members who reached out to share concerns about the cruise ships. He said community members who believe that a boat or ship is operating inappropriately are encouraged to call 808-643-DLNR (3567).

Ka‘ana‘ana said HTA is preparing to hold culture and ecology sensitivity training, perhaps in August, with all of the cruise lines that operate in Hawaii and the port agents. Ka‘ana‘ana said HTA also will share the concerns about cruise ships that were outlined in the Destination Management Action Plans — the resident-driven plans advising HTA how they want to manage tourism on each of their islands.
