In this guide we aim to demystify the rules over what to wear to Florence by answering your most frequently asked Florence outfit questions and give you some outfit inspiration.

FAQS About the Florence Dress Code

Is there a dress code in florence.

There is not a Florence dress code per se. However there are some places in Venice where dress codes are enforced.

For instance, all churches in Italy have a dress code whether you are visiting the Pantheon or The Vatica n , Rome , Duomo in Florence , or St Marks in Venice.

Generally speaking the following areas should always be covered when visiting any church in Italy including the Florence Duomo .

• Shoulders 
• Knees. 

Therefore when putting together your Italy Outfit for churches your should avoid wearing 

• Sleeveless Tops
• Mini Skirts

This dress code is strictly enforced and you may not be granted entry should your outfit not meet the rules. In fact I have actually seen people be turned away because they are not wearing appropriate attire.

On top of the churches, you will want to be sure you are wearing appropriate footwear in the more ancient places that you will be visiting in Florence where there are lots of cobbles and uneven walkways and on bridges which can have uneven and slippery surfaces.

It is also worth noting you will find that the local Italians are a stylish bunch and therefore there are some things that you will not see on the streets of Venice which we will explain below. 

Can I wear shorts in Florence?

You can wear shorts in Florence if you want to however you will find these are more commonly seen being worn by tourists instead of locals who are going to the office etc. 

If you are selecting shorts to wear in Florence then I would select a smarter pair of shorts such as tailored shorts for men instead of cargo shorts as this will help you fit in more with the locals. And for women we recommend a mixture of cotton shorts and denim shorts. Also I would select a more modest pair rather than a pair of short shorts as these aren’t commonly seen throughout Italy.

Also please note: if you want to visit churches on your Florence itinerary you will not be able to wear shorts as these do not cover your leg enough. Therefore on itinerary days with churches be sure to avoid wearing shorts.

Also it is worth noting that is is not common to see shorts being worn by either men or women in Italian restaurants.

Finally it is worth noting that is really won’t be warm enough outside of the summer months in Florence (i.e.  June ,  July  and  August ) to wear shorts for sightseeing. 

Therefore in answer to can you wear shorts in Florence is it really depends on where you are and what activity you will be doing alongside the weather.

Can I wear crop tops in Florence?

Crop tops are really not something you will see being worn in Florence by local women. And they definitely would not be appropriate to wear in churches. 

Generally speaking I would leave the crop top off your packing list unless your Italy itinerary will also take in some more beach destinations such as the Amalfi Coast , Puglia and the islands such as Sardinia , Sicily and Capri . But if you are just staying in Florence it is better to leave the crop tops at home.

Do you have to cover your shoulders in Florence?

The answer to do you have to cover your shoulders in Florence is yes and no depending on where you are going.

If you plan to visit a church or the Duomo (which should absolutely be on your Florence bucket list) you absolutely have to keep your shoulders covered. And you will not be permitted entry to some churches with bare shoulders. For this reason I always carry a pashmina with me in Italy for these occasions.

Outside of churches however you will see lots of bare shoulders which are perfectly acceptable.

Can you wear jeans in Florence?

You absolutely can wear jeans in Florence. In fact we recommend them on our Winter Florence packing list.

We always recommend smarter pairs though to be more in keeping with the locals.

Can you wear ripped jeans in Florence?

You can definitely wear ripped jeans in Florence but there are a few provisos for those considering bringing ripped jeans to Florence.

Firstly, ripped jeans are not commonly seen being worn by Italians. So they could mark you out as a tourist in the city.

Also jeans, even the ripped kind will be too hot to wear in Florence in Summer and I would only really recommend adding them to your packing list for Winter in Florence.

And when you do add jeans to your packing list you will find that the locals tend wear slim fit and darker color jeans.

Note : if you plan to visit a church then ripped jeans that show your thigh would not be acceptable and you would get turned away while wearing these.

Can I wear sneakers in Florence?

There is a rumor on the internet that sneakers, or runners or trainers, as they are sometimes called, are not appropriate footwear in Italy on the whole. But let me tell you this is not true. And sneakers are my go to shoe.

The reason for this is that they can cope with the large amounts of walking you will be doing in Florence and are good for the uneven terrain such as on bridges in the city.

Can I wear flip flops in Florence? 

You can wear flip flops in Florence as there are no rules against it however I would strongly advise you not to do so unless you are planning on spending time around the pool.

Flip flops offer very little arch support and aren’t great to wear on the uneven surfaces of Florence.

Do people wear leggings in Florence?

You will find that many tourists wear leggings in Florence however they are not commonly worn by locals, unless they are actually doing sports such as running.

Therefore if you want to look more like a local then I would recommend leaving the leggings at home. However if you feel comfortable in leggings and aren’t trying to fit in with local styles then by all means wear leggings.

What do you wear at night in Florence

Although Florence isn’t a very formal place, you will find that most restaurants in Italy and Italians in them will adopt a smart casual dress code.

Personally I would normally avoid shorts and sneakers at restaurants in Italy and opt for dresses and either sandals and boots for women depending on the city and time of year, and chinos and shirts, either long and short sleeved, for men in Florence.

Do I need swimwear for Florence?

Swimwear is definitely an optional for your Florence packing list depending on where you are visiting and when.

Whether of not you need swimwear for Florence depends on:

• if you plan on visiting a beach as a day trip from Florence
• if your hotel has access to a pool
• if you plan to travel to other beach regions of Italy 
• if you plan to go on a Med cruise as part of your Italy trip

If you answer yes to the above we definitely recommend bringing swimwear with you however if you answer no to all of the above the chances are you won’t need swimwear.

Note: you will also need a quick dry towel and a beach cover if you plan to visit the beach in Florence.

When you are looking for how to dress for Italy, we advise taking all of the above advice into consideration but also thinking about how to dress for the weather.

Despite many people thinking of Italy as a year round warm destination this is in fact not true. And many places in Italy experiences four seasons.

Generally speaking I would advise packing trousers / jeans along with t shirts and blouses for winter alongside coats and blazers.

However in summer I recommend sticking to Maxi dresses and skirts, with shoulders covered for days when you are planning to visit churches.

And a pashmina is an essential whatever time of year you are visiting Italy as it works as a great extra cover for churches and for when you feel chilly when dining al fresco.

And sunglasses are a must whatever season you visit as some of the cities can be quite dazzling especially around the Duomo.

What is the dress code for Florence museums?

Generally speaking museums in Italy do not have dress codes. However there are things that would be deemed inappropriate at museums in Italy such as overly skimpy or revealing clothes, items of clothing that may cause offence i.e. offensive slogan or graphic tees and beachwear.

We therefore recommend a casual to smart casual dress code be adopted.

What is Uffizi gallery dress code?

The Uffizi Gallery is the most famous gallery / museum in Florence. People tend to flock Here to see the gallery’s most famous artwork – ‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli.

But does the Uffizi Gallery have a dress code? As we said most Italian museums do not have a dress code, however the Uffizi Gallery does require proper attire. This means no skimpy clothing or beach wear. And you can not wear wedding dresses and wedding outfits in the grounds.

Does the Accademia Gallery have a dress code?

The Accademia Gallery is a very popular Florence tourist attraction as it is home to the David Sculpture.

But the good news is that the Accademia Gallery does not have a dress code.

What is the dress code for Duomo?

The dress code for Duomo is the same as all other Italian churches and is strongly enforced.

Keep shoulders and knees covered and don’t wear anything overly, tight, skimpy or with slogans or graphic that can cause offence.

With the popularity of athleisure, over the years Italian fashion along with that of other European countries , has become more “casual”, not to be confused with gym clothing. 

However, casual or any other clothing in Italy generally tends to differ from some countries in the sense that people wear items that are fitted to their bodies. A tailored look is the true secret to the Italian everyday fashion observed by visitors.

As with most destinations, practical sense applies. Leave the beachwear for the beach because it doesn’t translate well to streetwear in a city. Unless you’re actually headed to the gym, you may want to consider not wearing gym attire.

While it’s not uncommon to wonder what do Italians wear , it’s also important to remember that the best clothing to pack on any trip is what makes you feel most comfortable, both physically and emotionally.

Insiders do note that Italy’s clothing style may vary from the north to the south and between generations.

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets. They’re BRUTAL when you’re on your feet sightseeing all day. Choose form and function over fashion!

While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven.

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Nothing will ruin your trip faster than being unprepared with the wrong clothing for the weather.

Italian spring is beautiful–you can spot flowers and green everywhere. Spring may be considered the best season to plan a trip to Italy, as the temperatures are more moderate and the crowds lighter when compared to summer.

Spring in Italy can be unpredictable. The temperatures can vary from chilly to warm and sometimes even hot, from a minimum of 15°C/59°F to a maximum of 28°C/82°F. When it rains, and during early morning hours, the temperature can go down to 10°C/50°F. Checking the weather forecast before any trip is always recommended.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in Spring?

With fluctuating weather in the months of spring, layers are an absolute must! For example, what to wear in Italy in May will be different from what to wear in Italy in April.

Always choose 10 to 15 items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

How do I get around Italy?

Italy has several great transportation options that make it easy for you to get around Italy and hop from city to city. Train is one of the most popular options for traveling from one region to another. Seat61 is an excellent website offering extensive train travel tips for destinations around the world including Italy train travel.

Trenitalia operates three different high-speed rail options, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa, and you can easily book tickets or look at schedules online at Trenitalia . My upcoming 2-month trip (mid-Mar to Mid-May’22 – half by car/half trains) is creating a clothing dilemma for me as I’m traveling from cold to warm, early spring to late spring, formal to informal and multi-country. Month 1: Milan-Verona-Bologna/Emilia Romagna region; Month 2: Menton FR-Aix-Bordeaux-Bilboa, SP-Barcelona-home/USA. I like to blend in and I’ve always been able to stay in the gray/black color scheme so everything goes with everything. But other than Milan/Verona, this trip feels more like lighter colors (mid-blues/blacks/whites) are in order. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

We are going to Athens, Santorini start of September then the across to Italy for 3 weeks from 9th September. I have downloaded your packing list to help me get started. After having been in Bologna for around 4 months now, since August (summer), I can’t say I’ve really paid attention to what people are wearing. Contrary to (probably popular) belief, I wouldn’t say Italians dress over-the-top / always-in-fashion — or if they have, I just didn’t notice it? I felt like everyone dresses pretty “normally”, i.e., I’ve never really had a problem with what I’ve worn. EXCEPT:

I do recall feeling a taaaaad out-of-place during the summer, with my sleeveless top and shorts (not even that short, mind you). I could totally tell that those who were in shorts were almost all tourists. (Then again, it was Ferragosto, which is basically a month-long holiday during August, so there weren’t many locals around to begin with.) But, at the same time, I think there were those of the younger (i.e., my) generation Italians who would wear shorts too. Although, if you want to visit any of the churches, I’m saying it now: No shorts / sleeveless. 😛

We are staying in four star hotels and using private drivers for transportation and tours. My questions: Jacket – leather and/or lined waterproof rain jacket? Shoes for evening – booties or chunky heeled sandals? Thanks!

It can be quite rainy in that region at that time of year, so if you choose a leather jacket, I would definitely pack an umbrella! And booties may be better for the temperature! Thanks for the comment!

I’m going to central Italy in 4 weeks, and this is very helpful. Shoes are the hardest thing to find! I can’t wear flats for lack of proper support, so I think I’ve finally found some clog-type shoes that are really comfy to wear for excursions – though not very pretty. Still looking for something light that doesn’t make me look dowdy. And something I can actually afford.

Is it still common in Italy (specifically, Venice or Cinque Terre) that restaurants don’t let you in without heels?

I was in Rome 2 weeks ago , and I have searched every website looking for a paticular Italian clothing store on ether Via Frattina ViaVia Borgognona Walking down either street from the Spanish steps it is on the left hand side of the street near the top . Great informative article on what to wear. I would absolutely caution not to wear flip flops unless you’re at the beach since you’ll immediately stand out as a tourist. As a far as revealing clothing, just make sure you always have a light jacket and I would avoid short shorts. Italians are bit more modest in their dress but they always layer and accessories. As long at you throw on a light blazer and a scarf you’ll look great.

My husband and I are planning on spending a few weeks in Italy late Sept/early October, these lists are wonderful! Also, thanks for posting a list for men, that’s very helpful. If we are doing a lot of sightseeing, would flat-soled leather boots be appropriate? I don’t want to wear tennis shoes everyday. Amazing blog, having fun getting ideas for my shopping list!

I had the same question about going to several cities from Venice to Rome leaving the first of May. The last time I was there in May I got cold at night and was wondering if I could wear my flat black “riding” boots. They are so comfy to walk in but I don’t want to look out of place. I am also taking ballet flats for warmer days. Should I leave the boots or take them?

I am leaving for Italy this week for a ten day trip (Rome, Venice, Florence, Sienna, Amalfi Coast) and I think I’ll lean more toward the summer wardrobe but will add a few fall pieces just incase! I wasn’t planning to pack a pair of heels (and I am a huge heel girl)…so now I am rethinking my no heel decision. Perhaps wedges can suffice?

What to wear in Florence – Are you planning a trip to the most sublime city in the world? The way the women there style their attires and the elusiveness they exude is highly coveted by women worldwide.

We’ve already talked in detail about what to wear in Italy , but we felt like Florence deserves a special post – because the dazzling city and its stunning Bella-donna ain’t coming slow.

That’s why I have created a plethora of chic styles and fashion trends to assist you for your Florentine vacay-mode. Here’s what I’ll be sharing with you:

Packing Tips

Summer outfits, spring outfits, fall outfits, winter outfits, celebrity style inspo, how to dress up in florence.

Different seasons in Florence require different outfits to be styled differently.

In summer, sandals and shorts become essentials.

The frosty weather of winter necessitates a different aura of street-style vogue. Every element of the attire, be trench coats or knee-high boots have to be styled efficiently.

Similarly, different historical places have different fashion preferences. For instance, tourists from any part of the world simply cannot enter the Duomo Cathedral with bare knees and shoulders, as it is sacred.

To saunter through the city in style, follow the easy-peasy tips and tricks listed below first.

• Pack more neutral colors: Colors like white, nudes, and black go a long way in Italy and they’re easy to mix and match. If you opt for colors like mustard or red etc, for your trip then balance them with a neutral color like brown, etc.

• Keep 2-3 layering items: If you are planning to go out and about the city then do keep your coats etc, as a backup plan with you as the temperature fluctuates between day and night.

• Footwear: comfy but stylish footwear is essential for traveling during your trip. In summer, opt for sandals. Sneakers are a good choice too. In winter, opt for a nice pair of knee-high boots.

• Scarves and coats are a must : the spring and winter in Florence can get instantly chilly. One of our winter packing tips is always to carry scarves and a thick coat; they keep you warm and make your outfit more eye-catching.

• Carry an umbrella: an umbrella is a must due to fluctuating weather. If the sky shows no sign of rain in the morning then one may expect a rainy evening. So, do keep the foldable umbrellas or simple ones with you at all times.

These are some of the most appropriate attire for an Italian summer.

You can wear an A-line shirt or cropped top with nice denim shorts and pants, or you can simply wear a nice dress to show off in an Italian bazaar.

While roaming the streets, wear a nice pair of comfortable footwear such as sandals or flats since you simply cannot walk on the cobblestones comfortably with heels on.

For places like Doumo Cathedral, which is quite sacred and holy, do dress modestly.

A pro tip for strutting the Italian streets is to don a cool but casual look like Italians in summer.

29 – Bandeau Bands Are Back In Fashion

Everyone step aside as an avalanche of versatility, or should I say white outfits and bandanas headbands , are showing up to blow up your minds. A white cropped top ensemble is always a safe bet, especially if it is paired with a cute band. So, give this look a try for your cocktail party at Strizzi Garden .

For a more edgy look, put on a nice pair of stilettos and some chunky jewelry. With that done, now you’re all set to slay the party with your looks.

28 – Ripped Shorts For A Cool Italian Summer

Shorts are the best staple to have for the Italian summer. They are stylish and trendy. So, put them on if you intend to walk around the city and hit some designer brands like Gucci or Prada, etc.

Style your Levi’s ripped denim shorts with a nice black top. To add more edge, the transparent sandal heels and a nice arm bag will do the drill. You see. Simple yet chic look.

Here is another smart but casual idea to style shorts. Just put on a strapless top, pair it up with your rad shorts, then slip into your favorite flats. Now, strut the Italian streets with this classic look.

27 – Scarf In Italy Is A MUST

Florence is highly coveted for its fashion. A scarf is a primary element in Italian vogue. That’s why it must be styled with the utmost passion. So, add it to your Kimba cropped jacket and Levi’s jeans.

26 – Nightclub Outfit

Nightclubbing is something that every kind of person could enjoy. So, if you’re heading up to the fancy Space Club, then do follow the dress code below.

So, if you want to look fashionable while visiting Piazza del Duomo in Italy, try this right away.

If you’re on honeymoon with your significant one and plan to surprise them, then a little black dress will play as the cha-cha factor in it.

Fashionable places to eat

La ménagère.

One part gourmet restaurant, one part café, one part florist’s and one part jazz club – La Ménagère has it all. The staff are used to speaking English as many expats and international students visit here regularly. Its central location in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood is easily reachable but placed enough off the main streets to make La Ménagère feel authentic and relaxed. The food portions are on the smaller side, but the restaurant doesn’t skimp on the atmosphere.

IO Osteria Personale

The philosophy behind IO Osteria Personale is owner Matteo Fantini’s desire to break down stereotypes about Italian cuisine. His restaurant, located in an old butcher’s shop, invites you to forget everything you thought you knew about Tuscan staples, pasta or seafood, and instead experience creative combinations such as steak tartare with amaranth popcorn and gorgonzola ravioli with peanuts, tamarind and cumin.

Out on the town

Only open from May to September, this trendy outdoor lounge-club is the go-to spot for those looking to be seen and have a great time. Upscale with a relaxed atmosphere, Flò is great for a night out in Florence . Come dressed to impress, as is the Italian way, and enjoy the marvellous panoramic night views of the city with a cocktail in hand. If you really want to party in style, reserve a table before they’re all booked, and make it a night to remember.

Odeon Bistrò

Just behind the Cinema Odeon Firenze, you’ll find the stylish Odeon Bistrò. It offers an impressive food menu, but it’s just as good for an aperitivo. Since it’s open until 3am, you may as well try a cocktail, too. Odeon Bistrò is a favourite among the fashion crowd and sometimes hosts parties during fashion week.

La Rinascente Rooftop Bar

Sometimes called the Harrods of Florence , Rinacente is a large department store. Don’t miss its rooftop, which has a lovely bar where you can take in the Duomo while enjoying a glass of prosecco and some food. This bar is an excellent place to relax, whether after shopping or before going out.

Le Murate Caffè Letterarioio, Firenze

Le Murate started life as a convent before being turned into a prison. Today, it’s a lively entertainment hub with a bar, restaurant, café and bookshop. Piazza delle Murate is the heart of the complex and the perfect place to enjoy a drink, socialise and spend some quality time in the sunshine.

Florence Welch Liked a Dress So Much She Ordered It Twice

With her long, flowy prairie dresses, Florence Welch has quickly become known as the queen of bohemian style (she also takes to the stage barefoot). Her latest performance ensemble reveals she’s got no qualms about doubling down on a good boho look either.

At her show in London last night, the Florence + the Machine singer—who has been dressed by Gucci’s Alessandro Michele throughout her global tour—wore a custom dress by the Italian label in two different colors.

With its billowy sleeves, embroidered bust, and ribboned shoulder straps, the sheer floor-length dress—which Welch wore with a matching underwear set—completely embodied the whimsical, fairytale aesthetic Michele has conjured since he took the reins of the house in 2015. The singer first wore the dress in a pale orange hue, then switched it up by wearing the exact same style again, only this time in a mossy green. After all, if the outfit ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

The top artisans of fashion in Florence

Where to find, if not in the city where italian fashion was born, the best artisan ateliers.

Italian fashion has a date of birth: July 22, 1952. And a place of birth: Florence, the undisputed cradle of the “Made in Italy”. Today, it pursues its existence in the wonderful world of tailors, the best you can find, and of dressmakers, true geniuses with godet and bias binding. For you, only the best ateliers.

Liverano & Liverano sartoria

“Many today speak about tailoring without knowing too much about this craft, the most beautiful in the world. It takes me 70 hours to finish a piece, and I don’t use a machine for the overcast stitching. My jackets, for example, have just one pleat. The shoulder is sloped, the seams are backstitched, the sleeves have no wrinkles or creases and the sleeve head is rounded and in line with the shoulder.” These are the words of Antonio Liverano, a traditional tailor. Only he cuts the fabrics and takes the measurements, working 15-16 hours per day bent over a tailoring table, adhering still today to the principles of the old Florentine school. His clients include the most well-known men in the world of politics and economy.

Loretta Caponi

Loretta Caponi opened her workshop and boutique in 1967. Since then, Caponi’s creations have graced the wardrobes of thousands of families, some famous, like the Rockefellers and Kennedys, others simply admirers of excellent quality. The 850 square-metre atelier, today managed by her daughter, Lucia Caponi, and grandson, Guido, is located in a beautiful Florentine palace and is home to more than 10,000 designs of men’s and women’s nightwear - bathrobes in linen, silk, cashmere and velvet for him; nightgowns in silk velvet, dévoré and georgette for her - as well as tablecloths, sponges, bedsheets, pillows, baby clothes and children’s pieces. Caponi also boasts ready-to-wear collections.

Sartoria Marinaro

In the sixties, Mario Sciales moved to Florence to work as assistant to Michele Marinaro, the owner of the tailor’s shop named after him and started in 1937, of which he became the owner in 1970. Every garment is strictly handmade, according to the dictates of the old tailoring school. The suit is cut on a linen pattern, on which the fabric is then placed to ensure perfect wearability. A personalized pattern is made specifically for each customer. The tailor’s shop has preserved the atmosphere of an earlier time, although it serves a vast clientele of bankers and businessmen from New York City.

Sartoria Gianni Seminara

After years of training as a cutter and tailor in his hometown, Giuseppe Seminara started his first shop in Florence, which was then moved to the current premises downtown, in Via de’ Calzaiuoli. Today, his son Gianni runs the tailor’s shop. The fabrics are all carefully selected. Once the measurements are taken, the geometrical pattern is drawn on fabric or canvas and is used as a sample. The pieces are cut and sewn together and ready for the first fitting. The jacket will always fit loosely, but will never be as unstructured as Neapolitan jackets, nor as stiff as the English ones.

Sartoria Vestrucci

At nine years old, Loris Vestrucci decided that he wanted to become a tailor. Starting from the bottom, he learnt from the tailoring maestro Mealli before becoming a superb apprentice. It was his mentor Giuntini that taught him how to cut fabric and to master the subtleties and refinements of the Florentine sartorial school, that even today, 70 years after the beginning of his career, Vestrucci puts into his own creations. Today this tailor creates, in pure style and with an unmistakeably Florentine technique, jackets and ready-to-wear and made-tomeasure clothing, as well as offering a large range of shirts, ties, pocket squares and accessories that make up the complex aesthetics of this century’s Florentine gentleman.

Paolo Gennari

The production of custom-made shirts is something of a family affair for Silvia and her husband Paolo Gennari, the business having been handed down for three generations. In this little artisan workshop you can watch all the stages of preparation and creation of a shirt: each one is crafted according to the tastes and requirements of the customer, who can choose not just the fabric and the model, but may also have it personalized with embroidered initials. The shirts are distinctive for their “Rose” logo and “Handmade in Florence” label, a guarantee of the very finest quality and of the provenance of the product.

Stefano Bemer

The perfect Italian shoe: this was the ambitious goal that Stefano Bemer had when he opened his workshop in 1983. A few years later, the brand became one of the most renowned the world over for the technique, style and quality of its tailor-made footwear. The actor Daniel Day Lewis worked alongside this great master for one year, incognito, falling so in love with the art of shoemaking to the point that Martin Scorsese himself had to come to Florence to convince the actor to return to the film industry, hiring him for Gangs of New York . Today, in the deconsecrated church on via San Niccolò, the brand that carries on the excellent tradition of its roots, produces shoes that are assembled by hand, be they ready to wear, made-to-order or bespoke, offering an infinite variety of hides and colours. 

Saskia Scarpe su Misura

Vivian Saskia Wittmer learned how to craft bespoke shoes in Germany under the best Master shoemaker. Moving to Florence she improved her skills and techniques under Stefano Bemer, another prestigious name in the world of custom made shoes. For about 20 years, Saskia has had her own workshop where she makes men’s shoes completely by hand. The client explains his needs and ideas and she develops the personal model based on this. The shoes are created with leathers in the range from calf to kid, shark to camel, kangaroo to elephant skins.

Roberto Ugolini

Located right in front of Santo Spirito Church, Roberto Ugolini’s laboratory is where shoes of the highest quality are produced with exclusively artisan methods. The Florentine shoemaker makes shoes the old way: everything begins with the choice of the model and the materials, but it with the use of the wooden last, modified according to the measurements of the foot, that the real “made in Tuscany” stage occurs. A workshop that is redolent of leather and tradition, but also of precision and uniqueness.

Driven by his passion for artisanship and the local shoemaking tradition, Calogero Mannina opened a small laboratory for creating his exceptional and original shoes in the mid 1950s. Always attentive to change, over the years Calogero has managed to combine stimuli and inspiration from the fashion world with meticulous craftsmanship, research and top quality materials. This precious legacy has been handed down to his son Antonio, who now oversees the activities of the workshop and store, adding a touch of elegance and distinctive style. Today, as yesterday, men’s and women’s shoes are wholly handmade and are a perfect fit for even the most demanding foot.

Scuola del cuoio

Scuola del Cuoio was founded in Florence in 1950 thanks to the joint initiative of the Gori and Casini families (Florentine leather artisans since 1930) and the Franciscan friars at the Basilica of Santa Croce, with the mission to teach war orphans artisan techniques for producing leather. Still today, the school carries out internationally-recognized educational activities. In addition to this, there is, of course, a thriving production industry, with bags, wallets, belts and jackets all made strictly by hand. Each piece is personalized in terms of size, hide and craftsmanship, and are made according to each client’s wishes.

Pelletteria Artigiana Viviani

Pelletteria Artigiana Viviani has roots in the great Florentine artisan tradition of leather-making. Renato Viviani opened his workshop and boutique in the centre of Florence in 1965 after spending years mastering his craft, first in Guccio Gucci’s workshop in the 1920s and later in Buenos Aires in the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, where he became a master artisan. Women’s bags and work bags, wallets and belts, these original creations are designed, cut and assembled completely by hand. The hides used for all the products come exclusively from Tuscan tanneries. The workshop is today headed by Renato’s daughter and grandson, Viviana and Leonardo.

Dimitri Villoresi

In the heart of the Florence craft district of Oltrarno lies a hidden workshop in which the most original bags and accessories are created. Dimitri’s laboratory is a secluded but welcoming place, with a simple but fascinating feel about it, where the past and the present seem to mingle with the smell of leather and the sound of the clinking of ancient tools. Attention to detail, tradition, passion and poetry are the watchwords of this man and his workshop, which is also open to young people who wish to become Leather Artisans.

The hat factory in Signa has been open since 1875. For over four generations, the Grevi family has been at the forefront of the evolution of the hat, from the glorious era of straw weavers, whose able hands crafted weaves as delicate as lace, to melusine and satin felt handcrafted by milliners of the 1930s to ‘50s and the first hats produced in stitched ribbon and plaits, never before seen and sold all over the world from the 1960s to today, now made with a new creative interpretation that’s more ironic and romantic and boasting a greater comfortable and informal wearability. These hats are beloved by international jet-setters, front and centre in the world of cinema and theatre and sold in the most prestigious stores.

In 2004, the first pair of Woo Class glasses were made. From then onwards, Lisa Gabellini’s atelier has created frames that perfectly combine stile and comfort while considering the wellbeing of the wearer. Made with at least 11 layers of natural wood, the glasses are light, flexible and durable. The manufacturing process includes meticulously forming the nose bridge by using a traditional steam method, before being followed by more than 83 steps to finish the production process. Both the regular and bespoke lines in the collection are by designer Jochen Andreas Zeh, a master of extracting the full potential of such a rich material like wood.

Who knows where to shop in Florence better than the locals? I asked 8 of my favorite Florence people for their suggestions on where to shop in Florence and the response was phenomenal. These eight women are writers, designers, tour guides, and photographers who have come from afar to make Florence, a city of creativity and ingenuity, their home. In short, if you love Florence you have to follow these ladies. Each one shared with me a handful of Florentine shops that she loves and the result is a list of twenty off-the-beaten-track boutiques that range from eyewear to customized jewelry to vintage finds to leather to art pieces and more. (Some of them are even designers themselves so don’t miss their bios!)

Many of these boutiques focus on slow fashion, unique designs and individualized customer attention. While most have storefronts in Florence, they sell online as well so you can support local Florentine artisans from anywhere in the world and get in touch before even coming to Florence. Many also design customized pieces which has been the essence of Florentine craftsmanship for centuries.

Hicham Benmarek is the affable founder of the brand who created “Benheart” after surviving a heart transplant in his early 30’s. I very much appreciate how he treats his staff like family and is probably the only person who allowed me to see/visit where he buys his leather, dyes the leather, cuts and finishes it in the suburbs of the city.” Benheart was also recommended by photographer Tracy Russo (see below) for their fantastic quality leather and customized sizing which is great for plus size shoppers!

Art at FAF or “Female Arts in Florence”

To me, places like this show the evolution of contemporary artisans in the city and how “working together” is actually becoming the norm (thankfully so).”

Sara Amrhein is an American artist and designer based in Florence Italy. She specializes in sculptural statement jewelry handcrafted in polymer clay, sterling silver and bronze. In Alexandra’s own words: “As a dweller of Florence’s south side, I have been enjoying Il Mulino’s fresh vegetables and selection of jams, flours, sauce, honey and more for quite some years. Even before Covid, they had an ingenious system of client management: they send a whatsapp a few times a week listing what’s in stock so you can order in advance and go pick it up. They grow all their own vegetables in two locations around Florence, so the list is helpful to know what is in season and as an added bonus, makes copious and adorable use of emojis.”

The selection is really well-edited, so it’s not like you have to dredge through piles upon piles of discards to find something special. A great deal of the luxury label stuff they stock is out of my price range, but there are often deals to be had, and much of the merchandise is accessible to begin with. I also appreciate how the owners here are welcoming but never overbearing – I’m such a clotheshorse but can often find clothes shopping in Florence to be stressful when clerks are hovering. Proprietors of vintage shops usually understand the fun of “the hunt” and will leave you to it without pressuring you to profess exactly what you’re looking for, while also offering commentary or interesting tidbits about the piece you’re looking at if you probe them.”

It’s a unique and beautiful keepsake of a really Florentine-specific craft.

What to pack and wear in Florence in summer

The most popular time to travel Italy is usually between june and september, and to decide what to pack for Florence in summer , you must take into account that in Italy this is the hottest time of the year. Florence is particularly hot and muggy , temperatures can reach 38-40 Celsius degrees (100-104 Fahrenheit) and the sun beats down. On the plus side, the days are longer and it hardly ever rains.

What to wear in Florence in summer

During your summer in Florence you will need comfortable and very light clothes , perhaps made of cotton or linen , to face the days under the Tuscan sun. Bring clothes that mix and match and that can be layered.

Remember that for visiting Catholic churches there is a dress code to respect: shoulders and knees must be covered. Capris and knee long skirts and dresses are okay, as well as t-shirts. If you still want to wear shorts or tank tops just bring a light scarf with you, to cover yourself up while visiting the church.

Just to be safe, bring a light sweatshirt or sweater in case it gets cooler in the evening , but you probably won’t need it because summer evenings are way too hot in the city. In the countryside and in the hills, however, the night can be pleasantly chilly.

Bring comfortable walking shoes or sandals , because you’ll walk a lot on bumpy stone paved roads . Personally I recommend Teva sandals : they are very comfortable even after many hours, they make your feet breathe and are also suitable for walks in the countryside and light hikes.

In addition to walking shoes, you can also bring a pair of pretty shoes for nights out , but I do not recommend wearing high heels or you might have a hard time walking in the historic center due to the old stone paved roads.

Don’t forget a pair of flip-flops to use for showering and relaxing moments… Or maybe in the swimming pool, in one of the hotels with rooftop pool in Florence !

Backpacks and bags for traveling Florence

A backpack is the best solution to carry all your belongings with you while you stay out all day sightseeing. For my travels I use this The North Face backpack , resistant, comfortable and full of pockets.

Unfortunately in Florence it can happen to be pickpocketed . If you want to avoid this possibility, you can use an anti-theft backpack , with hidden openings and specially designed so that they cannot be found and opened!

Alternatively, there are money belts to wear under the shirt, to keep money, documents and credit cards safe.

Smart and useful accessories to pack for Florence

Sun Screen . You’re gonna need it. Believe me . During the hottest summer days I also use my uv protection umbrella or I will melt during my walking tours! And of course, it also works as a regular umbrella in case of rain.

• What to do in Florence when it rains

Straw hat . Needed for the same reason of the sun screen. The sun can hit really hard!

Spray mosquito repellent . Those small and annoying creatures are particularly voracious at sunset, and don’t give up until dawn . The presence of the Arno river, with its humidity, does not help.

Refillable insulated water bottle. Let me tell you that tap water in Florence is totally safe, as is that of public drinking fountains. So why waste money and plastic on bottled water when you can get it for free? I daily use this Laken insulated bottle : I love it because it keeps drinks cold for up to 12 hours and it is made of steel, which is durable and odor-proof.

Power adapter . You will probably need a universal travel adapter , as Italian power sockets are very different from American or British ones.

Wine bottle protectors . If your are planning to bring some wine back home , these wine bottle protectors are just perfect!
