One of the best things about bus travel is that you can almost tailor-make your trip adjusting it to your requirements for privacy and comfort. Different classes and types of buses cater to the different needs of travellers. The cheapest trips are normally offered by standard-class buses. They may be called local, express or ordinary. These are a good choice for shorter trips. Sleepers or VIP coaches are good both for longer and overnight trips. They may offer berths or wide soft reclining seats, sometimes with built-in massage options, blankets, soft drinks, and snacks, or more substantial meals on board or during toilet or refuelling stops. Travelling by night buses allows you to save on a hotel room, but to ensure the most comfortable ride do choose the class of your bus wisely. Prices always depend on the distance you ride and the type of coach. For some, even shorter trips, it is worth investing some extra money and buying a seat on a VIP bus as it can save you twice as much time as you spend travelling by an ordinary bus.

Travel by Bus: Pros & Cons

Pros of bus travel.

• Bus is the best choice to get to destinations that are not connected by rail or planes. The network of buses often covers almost the whole country, and their routes are well and long-established.
• Opposite to air travel and sometimes rail travel, taking a bus does not require arriving at the bus station much in advance. Check-in, even on international routes, does not take much time. Luggage allowances are usually very traveller-friendly, and the fee for extra luggage, if limits are set, is normally not very high.
• Bus tickets can be more affordable compared to air or fast train tickets. There is always a choice of ticket classes for all pockets. Cheaper standard options may be a bit slow and do not offer top comfort, but anyway acceptable and bring you to your destination. On longer routes, toilets or toilet stops as well as snacks, water, and sometimes toiletries and blankets are almost always included in the price.
• If you are ready to spend more, some VIP coaches offer seating comparable to business class on a plane with wide soft reclining seats, blankets, fewer passengers, and many other perks to make your trip a pleasant journey.

Cons of Bus Travel

• Newer intercity bus terminals are very often located out of the city close to bigger highways to allow buses to avoid city congestion. Unfortunately, it may create extra challenges for travellers, too. Getting to such a terminal may be a problem as in some destinations there are restrictions on vehicles allowed to enter the terminal, and you will have to use special carriers to get there. This results in higher costs as prices may be inflated. Also do calculate extra time if you are travelling during rush hours, especially if you are not familiar with the traffic situation at your starting point.
• Buses are probably the means of transport which runs out of schedule more often than trains or planes. They are heavily dependent on the road situation which sometimes can be unpredictable – accidents, road construction works, detours, etc. This is especially true for travels during weekends, high season, or national holidays. Do keep this in mind and do not plan tight connections.
• Travelling on certain routes or during the most popular periods may require advanced booking. Bear in mind that it is not always possible to show up at the bus station and hop on the next bus – tickets may well be all sold out, so organize your trip accordingly.

Department of Transportation’s changes hope to ease travel burdens

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - The Department of Transportation is making some new rules they hope will hold airlines more accountable.

More than 212 million Americans plan to take a summer vacation this year, according to travel experts at The Vacationer.

Half of those travelers will head to the airport before stepping on sandy beaches.

From canceled flights to lost luggage, countless travelers have experienced a travel horror story.

Aviation analyst Jay Ratliff says it is no secret airline travel is not what it used to be.

“We no longer enjoy travel; We endure it and it’s almost a reality show of ‘how much can these people take on their journey to San Diego?’” Ratliff explains.

Passengers should soon see welcome improvements over the next few months thanks to some recent Department of Transportation rule changes.

“Right now, I think we’re kind of held captive,” says traveler Salina Messman. “I mean, if you’re delayed or you’re sitting on the tarmac for more than an hour, there’s absolutely nothing you can do.”

Among the new rule changes:

• Passengers will now be automatically entitled to a refund in the original form of payment for flights that are canceled or delayed more than three hours domestically or six hours internationally.
• You do not have to accept a travel voucher.
• That is if the bag is not delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight arriving, or 15 to 30 hours internationally, depending on the length of the flight.
• You can get your money back on any extra services you paid for, like WiFi or seat selection, which weren’t provided.

Passengers at CVG say the rules help to level the playing field.

“I think it’s fair for the most part,” said Hunter Abramson. “That’s the least they can do for people missing their plans and missing flights.”

If an airline loses your bag, you are also entitled to compensation.

The federal government requires airlines to pay up to $3,800 for its contents on domestic flights.

“Putting a copy of your itinerary inside the bag right before you close it on your checked luggage will help the airline so that if all the tags come off, they can open up the bag and see who it belongs to, where you’re at, and then they can begin the process of reuniting you and the bag,” Ratliff explains.

If you want to take it even further, Ratliff says some tech-savvy travelers use Apple AirTags to track their baggage location.

An easy option that could lead to a less stressful and more enjoyable summer vacation.

The new rules will be rolled out over the next several months.

Delta Air Lines released its second annual most-searched summer destinations for 2024 — and these international travel stops appear to be top of mind. 

The major airline revealed the top 10 international summer destinations that travelers searched for the most — from Nov. 1, 2023, to March 18, 2024 — in order to to compile this list. 

A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines told Fox News Digital on Tuesday that searches for the top 10 spots increased, stressing the continued interest in travel abroad. 

"This year’s data shows the strong interest in international destinations from our customers with searches to these top 10 cities up more than 150% compared to last year," the spokesperson said.

London topped the list of the most searched international summer destinations on Delta.com. 

The company noted that other popular spots with nonstop service were Venice, Italy; Tulum, Mexico; and Naples, Italy. 

RISING COSTS ON FLIGHTS: WHEN TO BOOK, AND WHAT TO EXPECT

Athens, Greece, the fourth spot on the top list, increased its search popularity by 248% from last year, according to a Delta Air Lines spokesperson. 

"Athens, Greece, saw the most notable increase with searches to this historical city tripling compared to summer 2023," they noted.

The airline explained that Dublin, Barcelona and Vancouver were new additions to the top searched destination list this year.

Last year, Google Flights also ranked London as the most desired international summer destination — along with Cancun, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Athens and others.

In terms of domestic destinations, Delta Air Lines said some of the top searched locations within the U.S. were Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami and Honolulu.

The Vacationer recently released a survey for expected 2024 summer travel — which found that 82% of Americans plan to travel this summer. 

Although a high percentage, the number is down 3% from summer 2023. 

Travel experts also noted that nearly 52% of Americans will fly to their destination, but 75% of Americans will plan at least one road trip as well.

The survey also found that less than 21% of those road trippers will go within 250 miles of home, while 5.8% will travel over 1,000 miles to their destination.

For those looking to travel during peak summer months, such as June, July and August, six-year flight attendant Bernice Padilla told SWNS that she recommends aiming for May or September instead.

Padilla noted that these tend to be in the "shoulder" seasons and have fewer travel demands with fewer crowds and "more affordable prices."

Gov. Katie Hobbs announces expanded migrant bus routes ahead of Title 42's end

TUCSON — Arizona has established five new bus routes to transport migrants from small border communities to Tucson ahead of the expected lifting of a controversial border restriction this week, Gov. Katie Hobbs announced Tuesday.

The state established the routes Monday to avoid migrant street releases in communities that lack the infrastructure to care for and transport migrants to larger cities. The routes run from Douglas, Naco and Nogales to the Casa Alitas migrant shelter in Tucson.

The Border Patrol notified the communities about the need for migrant transportation to avoid street releases over the weekend, said Allen Clark, director of the Arizona Division of Emergency Management. The state is gearing up for more routes as needed, he added.

“These activities will happen on a rolling basis throughout the state to ensure we have a safe, humane and orderly lifting,” Hobbs said of the new bus routes.

Casa Alitas has received about 300 migrants daily from the small border communities since the routes were established Monday, according to Casa Alitas Executive Director Teresa Cavendish. The figure comes on top of the number of people that the organization already receives from the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector.

“That's a substantial increase,” Cavendish said.

The state’s Border Security Fund can make $7 million “immediately available” to scale up transportation, shelter and public safety operations, Hobbs said. The governor's team is working to find any additional sources of money to help local governments during the lifting of Title 42.

Title 42 was first enacted under the Trump administration in March 2020 to allow border officials to rapidly expel most migrants seeking asylum. The Biden administration has continued to use the restriction as a way to manage migrant encounters along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The restriction has bottled up thousands of migrants in Mexican border communities where they are exposed to dangerous conditions. U.S. officials are estimating that daily migrant encounters along the southern border could rise to 10,000 per day when Title 42 sunsets.

Title 42 is expected to end at 8:59 p.m. Thursday.

Arizona's plan: How will state respond to Title 42's end? Hobbs gives preview; many questions remain

Hobbs, a Democrat, spoke in front of a tent full of migrants waiting to be welcomed to Casa Alitas’ Drexel Center in Tucson. The migrant shelter is at capacity with roughly 600 to 650 migrants passing daily through the facility, according to Cavendish.

The Casa Alitas Welcome Center receives migrants who are released by Border Patrol or Immigration and Customs Enforcement and helps arrange transportation for them to their final destinations around the country.

Roughly 1,200 people are circulating through Casa Alitas’ six facilities at any given time, Cavendish said. While they're at capacity, the organization has been able to work with the city and the county to “nudge up” the level of shelter space that they’re able to provide at the moment, she added.

“It's kind of like an accordion, but it's like an accordion that has a definite limit on how far it can expand,” Cavendish said.

The capacity for Casa Alitas to continue to serve migrants at these levels while avoiding street releases in Arizona communities will depend on the number of migrant encounters that are seen after Title 42 ends, Cavendish said.

“We could have street releases as early as later this week or we could be able to push them off for a little bit longer,” Cavendish said.

The “enormous” resources that have been developed to help migrants may not be sufficient to help the number of people who will be arriving at Casa Alitas in need of assistance once Title 42 expires, Cavendish added.

Casa Alitas has seen an increase in the number of people it serves over the past couple of months, Cavendish said.

Hobbs visited Tucson to meet with local and nonprofit leaders two days before Title 42, the pandemic-era border restriction, is expected to expire. Hobbs expressed frustration over a lack of communication with the Border Patrol about where it is dropping migrants off as the state works to avoid street releases.

Tucson Border Patrol chief: Border Patrol as prepared as it can be for border restriction's end

John Modlin, chief patrol agent of the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson Sector, said the agency is as prepared as it can be for the expiration of Title 42 during a border safety event on Monday. Still, Modlin described the end of the restriction as “concerning” and said Border Patrol facilities are at capacity.

The Border Patrol has not yet shared its preparations for the lifting of Title 42 with her office, Hobbs said.

“(The Border Patrol) might think they have a plan, but they have not communicated that plan to us,” Hobbs said. “I would love to hear what their plan is, but we have not heard that yet.”

Hobbs’ visit comes a day after Hobbs teased the state’s five-pronged approach to the end of Title 42 during a news conference on Monday.

Concrete details of the plan, however, were sparse.

“The state stands prepared to scale up its transportation, shelter and public safety activities to meet the needs on the ground,” Hobbs said Tuesday.

“We're trying to make sure that we have everything in place to address all of the issues that are going to come from lifting Title 42.”

Hobbs’ approach revolves around public safety, emergency shelter, executive action, transportation and partnerships.

Hobbs announced the creation of a joint information command center to prepare for the expected increase in migrant encounters following the restriction’s lifting Thursday night. The joint center will allow federal agencies, local governments, tribal communities and nongovernmental organizations to communicate.

The various entities can raise concerns, share updates and coordinate responses through the new command center.

Hobbs visited Nogales alongside Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in March to announce an operation to interdict more fentanyl at Arizona’s ports of entry. Earlier that month, Hobbs visited Somerton to tour the Regional Center for Border Health, the nonprofit leading migrant aid in Yuma County.
