I liked getting off the plane. Everything else was well below standards. Not even offering a bag of peanuts for free for a 4 hours flight is ridiculous.

The whole experience was bad. Didn't know no complimentary drinks or snacks. $4.39 for a soda is ridiculous even a bottle water. A carry on was $74 just crazy. I don't think I will take this airline ever again. Very bad

Delayed...attendants checked every single bag and item for sizes before boarding.

The check in at the airport was awful. Told I need to pay for a bag. The item was taken at screening. I went back to get my $ back and they gave me a coupon with a QR code that doesn’t work. Worst costumer service ever!!!!!

4 hour delay because they used our aircraft to fly a different segment (per the captain)

Due to delay of our first flight, we almost missed the second flight. Workers were more agreeable, and baggage did not seem to be an issue.

I liked getting off the plane. Everything else was well below standards. Not even offering a bag of peanuts for free for a 4 hours flight is ridiculous.

The whole experience was bad. Didn't know no complimentary drinks or snacks. $4.39 for a soda is ridiculous even a bottle water. A carry on was $74 just crazy. I don't think I will take this airline ever again. Very bad

Delayed...attendants checked every single bag and item for sizes before boarding.

The check in at the airport was awful. Told I need to pay for a bag. The item was taken at screening. I went back to get my $ back and they gave me a coupon with a QR code that doesn’t work. Worst costumer service ever!!!!!

I liked getting off the plane. Everything else was well below standards. Not even offering a bag of peanuts for free for a 4 hours flight is ridiculous.

The whole experience was bad. Didn't know no complimentary drinks or snacks. $4.39 for a soda is ridiculous even a bottle water. A carry on was $74 just crazy. I don't think I will take this airline ever again. Very bad

Delayed...attendants checked every single bag and item for sizes before boarding.

The check in at the airport was awful. Told I need to pay for a bag. The item was taken at screening. I went back to get my $ back and they gave me a coupon with a QR code that doesn’t work. Worst costumer service ever!!!!!

Brochures/tour information should be updated. Covid-19 requirements for example. This did not have even a single mention at the welcome reception or at any time during the tour, despite the brochure, and could have saved some luggage. Sunset cruise at San Francisco is another example where the tour information mentioned included hor d'oeuvres and two drinks, but just one drink was the reality. Tour leader could provide clearer instructions/information by stating 'left' or 'right' rather than pointing saying 'here' or 'there' when she is doing this from the driver's seat and guests at the back of the van cannot see. She was informed of this and asked, but complied only that one time. Last minute guests (not me) who joined the sunset cruise at SFO were ripped off, having to pay USD68pp even if it included a transfer to the wharf whilst the direct operator price was USD36.

Making history: brightline west breaks ground on america’s first high-speed rail project connecting las vegas to southern california  , officials hammer the first spike commemorating the groundbreaking for brightline west.

LAS VEGAS (April 22, 2024)  – Today, Brightline West officially broke ground on the nation's first true high-speed rail system which will connect Las Vegas to Southern California. The 218-mile system will be constructed in the middle of the I-15 and is based on Brightline’s vision to connect city pairs that are too short to fly and too far to drive. Hailed as the greenest form of transportation in the world, Brightline West will run zero emission, fully electric trains capable of speeds of 200 miles per hour. Brightline West is a watershed project for high-speed rail in America and will establish the foundation for the creation of a new industry and supply chain. The project was recently awarded $3 billion in funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. The rest of the project will be privately funded and has received a total allocation of $3.5 billion in private activity bonds from USDOT.

The groundbreaking included remarks from U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Brightline Founder Wes Edens, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, Sen. Jacky Rosen, Senior Advisor to President Biden Steve Benjamin and Vince Saavedra of the Southern Nevada Building Trades. In addition, Nevada Reps. Dina Titus, Susie Lee and Steve Horsford and California Reps. Pete Aguilar and Norma Torres made remarks and joined the celebration. More than 600 people, including union representatives, project supporters and other state and local officials from California and Nevada, attended the event.

“People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades – and now, with billions of dollars of support made possible by President Biden’s historic infrastructure law, it’s finally happening,” said Secretary Buttigieg. “Partnering with state leaders and Brightline West, we’re writing a new chapter in our country’s transportation story that includes thousands of union jobs, new connections to better economic opportunity, less congestion on the roads, and less pollution in the air.”

“This is a historic project and a proud moment where we break ground on America’s first high-speed rail system and lay the foundation for a new industry,” said Wes Edens, Brightline founder. “Today is long overdue, but the blueprint we’ve created with Brightline will allow us to repeat this model in other city pairs around the country.”

CONSTRUCTION OF BRIGHTLINE WEST

Brightline West's rail system will span 218 miles and reach speeds of 200 mph. The route, which has full environmental clearance, will run within the median of the I-15 highway with zero grade crossings. The system will have stops in Las Vegas, Nev., as well as Victor Valley, Hesperia and Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

The privately led infrastructure project is one of the largest in the nation and will be constructed and operated by union labor. It will use 700,000 concrete rail ties, 2.2 million tons of ballast, and 63,000 tons of 100% American steel rail during construction. Upon completion, it will include 322 miles of overhead lines to power the trains and will include 3.4 million square feet of retaining walls. The project covers more than 160 structures including viaducts and bridges. Brightline West will be fully Buy America Compliant.

STATIONS AND FACILITIES

Brightline West will connect Southern California and Las Vegas in two hours or almost half the time as driving. The Las Vegas Station will be located near the iconic Las Vegas Strip, on a 110-acre property north of Blue Diamond Road between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard. The site provides convenient access to the Harry Reid International Airport, the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium. The station is approximately 80,000 square feet plus parking.

The Victor Valley Station in Apple Valley will be located on a 300-acre parcel southeast of Dale Evans Parkway and the I-15 interchange. The station is intended to offer a future connection to the High Desert Corridor and California High Speed Rail. The Victor Valley Station is approximately 20,000 square feet plus parking.

The Rancho Cucamonga Station will be located on a 5-acre property at the northwest corner of Milliken Avenue and Azusa Court near Ontario International Airport. The station will be co-located with existing multi-modal transportation options including California Metrolink, for seamless connectivity to Downtown Los Angeles and other locations in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The Rancho Cucamonga Station is approximately 80,000 square feet plus parking.

The Hesperia Station will be located within the I-15 median at the I-15/Joshua Street interchange and will function primarily as a local rail service for residents in the High Desert on select southbound morning and northbound evening weekday trains.

The Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) is a 200,000-square-foot building located on 238 acres in Sloan, Nev., and will be the base for daily maintenance and staging of trains. This site will also serve as one of two hubs for the maintenance of way operations and the operations control center. More than 100 permanent employees will report on a daily basis once operations begin and will serve as train crews, corridor maintenance crews, or operations control center teammates. A second maintenance of way facility will be located adjacent to the Apple Valley station.

The Las Vegas and Southern California travel market is one of the nation’s most attractive corridors with over 50 million trips between the region each year. Additionally, Las Vegas continues to attract visitors from around the world, with 4.7 million international travelers flying into the destination. The city dubs itself on being the world’s No. 1 meeting destination, welcoming nearly 6 million people to the Las Vegas Convention Center last year.

In California, approximately 17 million Southern California residents are within 25 miles of the Brightline West station sites. Studies show that one out of every three visits to Las Vegas come from Southern California.

ECONOMIC & ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

Brightline West's $12 billion infrastructure investment will create over $10 billion in economic impact for Nevada and California and will generate more than 35,000 jobs, including 10,000 direct union construction roles and 1,000 permanent operations and maintenance positions. The investment also includes over $800 million in improvements to the I-15 corridor and involves agreements with several unions for skilled labor. The project supports Nevada and California's climate goals by offering a no-emission mobility option that reduces greenhouse gasses by over 400,000 tons of CO2 annually – reducing vehicle miles traveled by more than 700 million each year and the equivalent of 16,000 short-haul flights. The company will also construct three wildlife overpasses, in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Caltrans for the safe passage of native species, primarily the bighorn sheep.

BRIGHTLINE FLORIDA

Brightline’s first rail system in Florida connecting Miami to Orlando began initial service between its South Florida stations in 2018. In September 2023, Brightline’s Orlando station opened at Orlando International Airport, connecting South Florida to Central Florida. The company has plans to expand its system with future stops in Tampa, Florida’s Space Coast in Cocoa and the Treasure Coast in Stuart.

Me and my GF are going to the US in September for 22 days. We are currently drawing up an itinerary and would love some input from you knowledgeable folks! Nothing is set in stone, except that we land in San Francisco and fly home from Las Vegas 22 days later.

Below are two iterations of the itinerary, one which favors an extra day at both Yosemite and SEKI. Whereas the other sacrifices those two days to experience more of the west coast and coastal redwoods. I have also attached Furkot links for each itinerary!

You need parking reservations for Muir (not Miur) Woods and entry reservations for Yosemite on weekends. It might be more convenient to visit Henry Cowell Redwoods and then to drive toward Sequoia NP.

Do you have a friend in Modesto to visit? It is usually not on anyone's itinerary.

You need lodging reservations for pretty much all these destinations. September is still quite popular for travel. And it's still quite warm.

suggest staying in June Lake Loop or Mammoth Lakes instead of Bishop.

just some suggestions - enjoy your trip

A few comments and suggestions on Option 1.

You want to actually end up in Springdale, Utah/Zion on Day 14. It's a three hour drive, no stops, from Vegas. You'll lose an hour on the clock entering Utah.

You shouldn't skip Bryce Canyon NP. It's a more important destination than anything you are doing in Page. You would go to Bryce after Zion and before you drive to Page.

Without getting in a boat and exploring Lake Powell, the only access you will have for swimming is from Lone Rock Beach. You'll pass Lone Rock Beach on the way to Page.

For the best experience at Monument Valley, you should really stay over night there.

Sedona should have a minimum of two nights. Folks on the Arizona forum will tell you that three nights is better. Perhaps you should skip going there.

You can see the red rocks area of Sedona in a day - of course many stay a week.

Sedona is nice and we've stayed as short as a day.

Day 2: Good Lord. Why Modesto? It’s not a bad city but the hotel situation is GRIM. Rent a car , spend the morning at Muir Woods, and just drive to Kings Canyon. If you absolutely don’t want to stay that far, spend the night in Clovis or Northeast Fresno, which are about 3.5 hours’ drive from Muir Woods across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge (toll-free headed eastbound as you will be). Grant Grove Village in Kings Canyon National Park is about another hour and a quarter east of Clovis.

Day 3: You don’t need a whole day to go from Modesto (again, though, WHYYYYY) to SEKI.

Day 6: From Sequoia to Yosemite is going to take you longer than Google Maps tells you. Count on five hours and be happy if it takes less than six. Flatlanders tend to drive very slowly in the mountains, and flatlander tourists doubly so.

Day 9: Someone else has already given you the correct advice: June Lake Loop or Mammoth Lakes, or just suck it up and go to Bishop. Don’t miss Bodie, though.

Day 14: Leave after breakfast, park at your hotel (you should stay in Springdale, Utah), and spend the afternoon seeing some of the easier-accessed sights in Zion.

Day 16: Go to Bryce Canyon for a night first. Stay either at the lodge inside the park or at one of the two Best Western hotels outside the gate. Do not stay in Panguitch unless you have no choice (it’s far and it’s a bad idea to drive at night due to open-range livestock and wildlife in the road, there are literally millions of deer).

Day 17: You need an overnight at either Goulding’s Lodge or The View in Monument Valley. Swimming in Lake Powell… in September, the water level is likely to be low, so check about conditions before you go in. You don’t seem to be doing anything else in Page, so I’m gonna say don’t stay the night there.

Day 19: You’ll want two or even three days in Sedona. On the way south from Flagstaff, stop at the scenic area at the top of the canyon (you’ll see signs) and you can buy Indigenous-made crafts. The state is pretty good about making sure the vendors are Indigenous people selling their own crafts, not made-in-China knockoffs.

Day 20: Hoover Dam is a 30-minute stop-off. The tour is a dam bore.

Fixing your shiz:

Land in SF, customs and immigration, take BART into the city.

Hike in SEKI (try to stay in the park)

Drive to Yosemite NP (make hotel reservations NOW)

Drive to Bishop via Tioga Pass, stopping at Bodie and June Lake

Drive to Death Valley, stay in Stovepipe Wells (it will be hot - could be 50ºC)

A couple of things:

1. As I mentioned in #5, do not drive between dusk and dawn except for very short distances, and slowly. You will not see a Black Angus heifer lying on the pavement in the dark around a curve until it is too late to stop.

2. It will be miserably hot in many of the places you are going. I do not know where you are coming from, but if it's from Europe, you are in for some unpleasant shocks. The temperature will be well above 30º everywhere you go except San Francisco, will be above 40º in much of your drive, and could be as much as 50º in Death Valley.

4. Make absolutely sure you have plenty of water with you, both in the car and most especially when hiking. Heat deaths happen every year. Don't let this be you. If you don't want to spend the money on bottled water, every national park lodge and visitor center has filtered tap water and a bottle filler. Restaurants will give you as much ice water as you want.

5. Mind your speed in small towns along the way. Speeding tickets are very expensive.

The Kings Canyon Scenic Byway (SEKI) is worth visiting for a day.

Thank you all for your feedback! I have tried to reply to you all directly but it seems as I have been limited regarding posting so I will reply to you all in one post instead (sorry!). Here's hoping I'm allowed to post this time...

First off all I want to reiterate that the itinerary is just a rough draft, resulting in a quite rudimentary plan which I hope will encourage feedback on interesting places along the way - which seems to have been successful based on your responses!

Regarding Modesto, it was just a place with a Walmart in an arbitrary distance between SF and SEKI. While I am an experienced driver and have done a couple of one-day 62 mile drives back home in Sweden, I am trying to not be overconfident in my driving abilities in a foreign country.

We are aiming to make reservations for lodging as soon as possible, we really just need to flesh out the itinerary so we get the dates right. I have also made calendar events roughly 90 days prior to when we will arrive at the parks requiring reservation to be sure we won't miss that.

Appreciate the tips in #7, perhaps it might be better to drive through Death Valley and just make a short stop to feel the heat. #8 Highway 180 in Cedar Grove is closed and expected to open in June, if that would be open for sure during our stay that could warrant another night in SEKI. How has it looked in the past, have they usually managed to stick to the expected opening date?

We have updated our Itinerary somewhat, trying to add in more places we have found interesting but had not added in Furkot. Also bringing in your feedback and making some changes related to that. We've put 3 nights in Sedona just because that's what we were left with after editing our stops, might be nice to wind down after the long journey and stay in one place for a few nights. What do you think? Otherwise those nights could be placed elsewhere, for example one extra night in the Eastern Sierras, and an extra night or two in any of the NPs. Perhaps there's some hidden gems along the way which are worth a night or two, or if there's an alternative to Sedona?

Map Shows New California High-Speed Rail Routes

A series of maps show the full extent of California's proposed high-speed rail routes that would provide an efficient and quick way of travel between the state's major cities.

Renewed interest has surfaced in high-speed rail travel after Brightline West, a new all-electric, 218-mile rail line bringing passengers from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Rancho Cucamonga, California , broke ground on Monday after construction was delayed for several years.

The project is expected to be completed before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The California High-Speed Rail Authority has another rail line planned that would provide a trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles in less than three hours, but progress has been slow.

According to maps on the Rail Authority's website, the proposed high-speed rail line would traverse three regions—northern, central and southern California.

"The Phase 1 system will connect San Francisco to the Los Angeles basin via the Central Valley in under three hours on trains capable of exceeding 200 miles per hour," the website said. "Phase 2 will extend to Sacramento and San Diego."

A spokesperson for the Authority told Newsweek that the project is at an "exciting time." There are 171 miles of rail line under construction, and there is environmental clearance for 422 miles.

"In the last year alone, the Authority has been awarded $3.3 billion in new federal funds to advance the work on the initial operating segment between Merced and Bakersfield, signifying a renewed federal partnership," the statement said.

Northern California project

There are two legs to the northern California project. Phase 1 involves creating a high-speed rail line from San Francisco to Merced, with stops in between at Millbrae-SFO, San Jose and Gilroy. Phase 2 would bring travelers from Sacramento to Merced with stops at Stockton and Modesto.

For the San Francisco to San José leg of the journey, the Authority plans to introduce high-speed rail service to the Caltrain corridor. Environmental clearance was completed in 2022, and construction of the Caltrain electrification is under way.

Environmental clearance also was completed for the San José to Merced leg.

"Electrifying the existing rail corridor from San José to Gilroy will modernize the rail corridor for electrified high-speed rail service and allow Caltrain to extend electrified service to southern Santa Clara County," the website said.

Central California project

The middle stint of the statewide project travels from Merced to Bakersfield with rail stations at Fresno and Kings/Tulare. Construction is most promising in this segment.

"The electrified high-speed rail line between Merced and Bakersfield is the first building block of the statewide system. This 171-mile line will offer the nation's first true electrified high-speed rail service," the Authority said on its website.

The spokesperson told Newsweek that this leg of the project is expected to be completed by 2030 to 2033.

Southern California project

The southern California stint also involves two phases. Phase 1 would bring travelers from Bakersfield to Anaheim with stops in Palmdale, Burbank and Los Angeles. Phase 2 would travel from Los Angeles to San Diego with stops at San Bernardino and Riverside. The southern California map also shows the Brightline West route.

The statewide project has been plagued with delays and price jumps. Voters approved the project in 2008, KTLA reported, with Phase 1 taking travelers from San Francisco to Los Angeles. At the time, the project was anticipated to be operational by 2020 and cost $33 billion.

Four years past the deadline, the project is still far from being completed and the price has jumped to $128 billion.

"The full Los Angeles to San Francisco line completion date is contingent on federal funding," the spokesperson told Newsweek .

According to a U.S. House testimony by Lee Ohanian, a UCLA professor and Stanford University fellow, California began its journey to high-speed rail in 1993 by creating the California Intercity High-Speed Rail Commission. Three years later, the commission was replaced by the California High-Speed Rail Authority.

"California's HSR project has little to show over this 30-year period. The project is significantly delayed, and its budget has increased to about four times its initial cost. Some of this is due to mistakes in planning, management, oversight, and accountability," Ohanian testified.

"But other factors reflect more endemic challenges in building HSR, including limitations in understanding the scope and size of the problems and risks that can arise in such a major infrastructure project."

Construction starting on $12 billion high-speed rail between SoCal, Las Vegas

The project is touted as the first true high-speed passenger rail line in the nation, designed to reach speeds of 186 mph.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. -- Construction is expected to begin Monday on a $12 billion high-speed passenger rail line between Southern California and Las Vegas.

Brightline West aims to lay 218 miles of new track between a terminal to be built just south of the Las Vegas Strip and another new facility in Rancho Cucamonga. That trip usually takes well over three hours by car.

The company says its fully-electric train will take just over two hours each way.

Almost the full distance is to be built in the median of Interstate 15, with a station stop in the Victorville area.

Forecasts are for 11 million one-way passengers per year, or some 30,000 per day, with fares well below airline travel costs. The trains will offer rest rooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales and the option to check luggage.

In a statement, Brightline Holdings founder and Chairperson Wes Edens called the moment "the foundation for a new industry."

Brightline aims to link other U.S. cities that are too near to each other for flying between them to make sense and too far for people to drive the distance, Edens said.

The project is scheduled to be complete by the time Los Angeles hosts the Summer Olympics in 2028.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Monday will join Brightline leaders at the start of the construction in Vegas. Brightline received $6.5 billion in backing from the Biden administration, including a $3 billion grant from federal infrastructure funds and approval to sell another $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds. The company won federal authorization in 2020 to sell $1 billion in similar bonds.

The construction is expected to create jobs for many in Southern California.

"We're looking at thousands of jobs as a result of this and hundreds of millions of dollars of investments, and that impact is going to be felt for years to come," said Rancho Cucamonga City Manager John Gillison. "This project will have a big impact on California, and especially Southern California."

Other fast trains

The project is touted as the first true high-speed passenger rail line in the nation, designed to reach speeds of 186 mph (300 kph), comparable to Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains.

Florida-based Brightline Holdings already operates the Miami-to-Orlando line with trains reaching speeds up to 125 mph (200 kph). It launched service in 2018 and expanded service to Orlando International Airport last September. It offers 16 round-trips per day, with one-way tickets for the 235-mile (378-kilometer) distance costing about $80.

Other fast trains in the U.S. include Amtrak's Acela, which can top 150 mph (241 kph) while sharing tracks with freight and commuter service between Boston and Washington, D.C.

Ideas for connecting other U.S. cities with high-speed passenger trains have been floated in recent years, including Dallas to Houston; Atlanta to Charlotte, North Carolina; and Chicago to St. Louis. Most have faced delays.

In California, voters in 2008 approved a proposed 500-mile (805-kilometer) rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco, but the plan has been beset by rising costs and routing disputes. A 2022 business plan by the California High-Speed Rail Authority projected the cost had more than tripled to $105 billion.
