Dr Gabor Maté – Live on Stage in London

Drawing on cutting-edge science and real-life stories, renowned physician Dr Gabor will share his compassionate and humane approach to wellbeing.

‘Gabor Maté’s connections – between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political – are bold, wise and deeply moral. He is a healer to be cherished’ – Naomi Klein

A revered expert in the psychology of addiction, a prize-winning author and the pioneer of an innovative understanding of human development that employs the lenses of science and compassion, Dr Gabor Maté is a singular figure in contemporary medicine.

Renowned for his insights into the connections between mind and body, self and society, Dr Maté avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting self-understanding as the foundation of wellbeing and the first key to healing.

Returning to How To Academy to explore the major insights of his life and career, from the role of trauma and emotional loss in the formation of addiction to the myth of ‘normal’ and the connection between personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living, this live event will change how you see yourself, others and the world.

We may not be responsible for the way that the world creates our mind, but we can learn to take responsibility for the mind with which we create our world. – Gabor Maté

Praise for the work of Dr Gabor Maté:

‘Gabor and Daniel Maté have delivered a book in which readers can seek refuge and solace during moments of profound personal and social crisis … an essential compass during disorienting times.’ Esther Perel

‘Gabor Maté takes us on an epic journey of discovery about how our emotional well-being, and our social connectivity (in short: how we live), is intimately intertwined with health, disease and addictions … This riveting and beautifully written tale has profound implications for all of our lives, including the practice of medicine and mental health’ ― Bessel van der Kolk

We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world? Join the renowned physician for a pathway to reconnection and healing.

Illness and trauma are defining how we live. 45% of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70% of Americans take at least one prescription drug.

Joining us live on stage in London and via livestream, the renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise – physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living.

Over four decades of clinical experience, Dr Gabor Maté has found that the common definition of ‘normal’ is false: virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, as we grow further and further apart from our true selves.

Filled with stories of people in the grip of illness or in the triumphant wake of recovery, this life-affirming talk from the beloved physician and author will show how true health is possible – if we are willing to embrace authenticity above social expectations.

This event is presented in partnership with How To Academy.

The Master Series

Oxford Trauma Conference 2024

Limited early bird ticket sale.

Open your mind to transformative and insightful approaches to trauma and mental health from thought-leaders such as Gabor Maté, Bessel van der Kolk, Janina Fisher, John & Julie Gottman, Linda Thai, Frank Anderson and many more, all set against the backdrop of the University of Oxford.

Choosing Oxford as the backdrop for The Master Series is a deliberate decision. It is a choice that rejects the notion of neutrality. We are working to acknowledge the ruptures in history that have shaped our present and that must be considered when facilitating repair in the future. After all, none of us exist in a vacuum, and neither do the spaces we work in. Repairing spaces with ruptured pasts means refuting the idea that a ‘neutral space’ can eliminate discrimination and marginalization

Connect with peers, spotlight your company, and earn over a year’s worth of CPD/CE credits amongst world-renowned architects of this field. Don’t miss out on this unparalleled opportunity to elevate your expertise in trauma and mental health.

Bessel 400x400

Bessel van der Kolk MD spends his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences, and has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of treatments for traumatic stress in children and adults.

In 1984, he set up one of the first clinical/research centers in the US dedicated to study and treatment of traumatic stress in civilian populations, which has trained numerous researchers and clinicians specializing in the study and treatment of traumatic stress, and which has been continually funded to research the impact of traumatic stress and effective treatment interventions. He did the first studies on the effects of SSRIs on PTSD; was a member of the first neuroimaging team to investigate how trauma changes brain processes, and did the first research linking BPD and deliberate self-injury to trauma and neglect in early childhood.

Much of his research has focused on how trauma has a different impact at different stages of development, and that disruptions in care-giving systems have additional deleterious effects that need to be addressed for effective intervention. In order to promote a deeper understanding of the impact of childhood trauma and to foster the development and execution of effective treatment interventions, he initiated the process that led to the establishment of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), a Congressionally mandated initiative that now funds approximately 150 centers specializing in developing effective treatment interventions, and implementing them in a wide array of settings, from juvenile detention centers to tribal agencies, nationwide.

He has focused on studying treatments that stabilize physiology, increase executive functioning and help traumatized individuals to feel fully alert to the present. This has included an NIMH funded study on EMDR and NCCAM funded study of yoga, and, in recent years, the study of neurofeedback to investigate whether attentional and perceptual systems (and the neural tracks responsible for them) can be altered by changing EEG patterns.

His efforts resulted in the establishment of Trauma Center (now the Trauma Research Foundation) that consisted of a well-trained clinical team specializing in the treatment of children and adults with histories of child maltreatment, that applied treatment models that are widely taught and implemented nationwide, a research lab that studied the effects of neurofeedback and MDMA on behavior, mood, and executive functioning, and numerous trainings nationwide to a variety of mental health professional, educators, parent groups, policy makers, and law enforcement personnel.

Accomodation

Rupture and repair.

The theme of The Master Series: Oxford 2024 is Rupture and Repair; a theme which highlights our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. If we do not work to repair the ruptures in the field of trauma and mental health, we will inevitably contribute to them.

Reflecting on The Master Series: Oxford 2023, we saw a vibrant community sharing profound wisdoms. However, we also saw something else, we saw ruptures in the field of trauma and mental health. In a moving turn of events our wonderful community spoke to us and showed us opportunities for repair.

Within the realm of trauma and mental health, critical ruptures exist, encompassing issues of marginalization and discrimination, the inaccessibility of trauma treatment, and the prioritization of the ‘greater good’ over unique individual needs.

So, in a departure from the fear of ‘getting it wrong’ we are proudly dedicating ourselves to identities, populations, communities and concepts that are all too often silenced. We extend an invitation for collaboration in reshaping this field. Your feedback, thoughts, and criticism are invaluable as we strive for positive change.

By delving into the nuances of rupture, we aim to create a space for introspection and empathy, fostering a deeper connection within our community.

Repair is not possible without rupture. The Master Series: Oxford 2024 will be a platform for healing, mending, and rebuilding through dialogue, learning, and collaboration, where we collectively explore ways to contribute to positive change.

The Wisdom of Trauma Film

Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds. In this film based on Dr. Maté’s life work, Gabor gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal personnel are not concerned with fixing behaviors, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul. Over 6,000,000 human beings from 230 countries and territories have seen the film so far. Join the movement towards a trauma-informed society. The film is available by donation and has been translated into 32 languages.

… then this series may be for you. It is meant for parents, therapists, teachers, healers, anyone who has experienced adversity, or is simply seeking to understand how trauma shapes our lives. In 2022 Dr. Gabor Maté and the SAND team went on The Wisdom of Trauma film European tour. We held workshops and lectures in various cities. All the events were fully sold out. SAND has compiled and edited the recordings of these live conversations and organized the talks in 9 distinct categories to help you navigate this rich content.

Healing Trauma & Addiction

A powerful videos series and course. Co-created exclusively with Wholehearted.org . For the first time Gabor Maté MD has created a program specifically for families and individuals, focused on healing trauma and addiction. This unique series unfolds as a step-by-step “how to” workshop that represents the culmination of Dr. Maté’s decades of research and clinical experience. Each episode and lesson expands on the knowledge in his worldwide bestselling books on addiction, childhood trauma, and mental health.

This program, filmed before a live audience, includes video lectures interwoven with audience interaction and on-stage demonstrations with participants. Dr. Maté thoughtfully demonstrates how to develop awareness, compassion, and tools for effective healing. Families and those struggling with addiction will learn how to heal longstanding tensions and better understand each other. You will gain new insight and understanding that bring hope, optimism, and practical strategies that support long-term recovery. Participants describe their experience as life-changing, profound, and optimistic.

This program is offered in two versions. Both include the video series. The individual and family program includes a course specifically written for families and individuals focused on healing their trauma and addiction. The professional program includes a course and client exercises, facilitation guides, materials for clients, and a certificate for 12 hours of continuing education.

“This program is very special and different from my other courses and internet videos. I’ve been waiting for years for a video series that effectively conveys this work. As a writer, I am at a loss for words to describe just how much I appreciate this program and all of the hard work the people at  wholehearted.org  have dedicated to this project.” Dr. Gabor Maté

Dr Gabor Maté – Live on Stage in London | Morning Event

The myth of normal – trauma, illness & healing in a toxic culture.

Logo

By popular demand, Dr Maté joins us for additional live, on-stage early morning event. Join the renowned physician for a pathway to reconnection and healing.

Illness and trauma are defining how we live. 45% of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70% of Americans take at least one prescription drug.

We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world? Joining us live on stage in London, the renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise – physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living.

This event is presented in partnership with Penguin Live.
