GT Peace 9er review

26er singlespeed look sooooo last year

Jonathon Gawler©.

gt peace tour review

The familiar triple triangle frame tells you straight away that this 29er is from GT. If you are going to ride a rigid singlespeed - if not, move along, nothing to see - a 29er makes a bit more sense than a 26er: it climbs better, it's more comfortable, and you can use its momentum to keep up with your geared buddies by thrashing it up to speed and coasting while they keep on pedalling.

To tension the chain, the GT's frame uses an eccentric bottom bracket. With the bike's investment cast vertical dropouts, this looks neat. However, it misses the main advantage of such a setup - ease of fitting a rear disc - as there are no mounts. Nor are there any on the fork, although the front wheel has a disc hub. You can't do much with the gearing either, because there's no derailleur hanger. A Rohloff hub should work okay without a chain tensioner, although you will need a model with a torque arm.

Perhaps this is missing the point: the GT Peace 9er isn't really a bike you'd buy to upgrade. It's a cheap way in to 29er singlespeeding. And that's something it does rather well. The effective top tube is 0.5 to 1in longer than that of the other bikes, opening up the cockpit a bit the better to crank away out of the saddle.

In terms of components, the 32x18 gear ratio is as good as it gets. The rigid ride is softened by 2.3in WTB ExiWolfs, which were among the first big volume 29er tyres. The small tread blocks work better on hardpack than soft mud, which can clog them. (You notice traction problems more on singlespeed because of the high torque pedalling.) Those wide WTB rims would take even wider tyres, although the frame doesn't have mud clearance for anything bigger.

Contact point comfort is critical on a rigid bike. While the saddle is good, the cockpit needs bar ends for hand and wrist comfort when climbing standing up.

The GT Peace Tour is a commuter/city/touring bike with a chromoly frame. The frame comes in white or Putty  Gray. It was first released in 2010 and again in 2011. Due to the frame materials and other factors, we estimate that this bike weighs around 15 pounds. The Peace Tour is fully rigid.

The Peace Tour comes with various commuter bike components, including an aluminum four-bolt stem, a threadless, cage TH headset and bar-end MicroShif shifters.

The Peace Tour has 9 speeds and has a Shimano derailleur.

It comes with Schwalbe Delta tires (622mm x 35mm) and double-wall, Jalco X320 rims.

💥💥💥‼️‼️‼️ I NEED ANOTHER IN TAN/SAND ASAP LMK HOW [email protected] NEAL

Zero weaknesses to speak of

One bike do it all: from road trips to technical all mountain. Superb value

Model discontinued :((( Minor issues with seat post clamp (replaced), wheel hubs (I don't like Deore hubs) etc.

Although I own a 5k$+ 26er 5.5" full suspention, since I got the GT I hardly use them. For the first 6 months or so I used the rigid fork it was OK but I decided to 'upgrade' it due to my limitations as a rider. They are great for nearly every job. Very reliable, quiet, very relaxing. They don't frighten you easily even in edgy situations. The flexy chromoly frame contributes to pleasant ride without being sissy. Above all, they have this un tangible 'thing' called a character. Fun. Why the hell GT decided to discontinue this model? Is that because you'll buy and use it for 10 years, not wanting to replace every time?

Handles great and looks good, incredible components for the price

Nothing major, maybe the 80mm front geometry?

The bike deserves 6 chilis for value, if you're looking for a steel hardtail you can't beat it. It's a little heavy on the shop scale but not noticeably so once you're riding it. Handling is great though it's a little tough to lift the front wheel (like most 9ers). My only gripe is pretty minor - I want to put a squishy fork on it and it's really hard to find cheap 80mm travel forks these days. I love the bike and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Similar Products Used:

Trek Sawyer, a bunch of old 26" hardtails

"light weight", cheap, sturdy Steel frame Mostly decent stock components.

Non-replaceable derailleur hanger Stock Headset "Non-standard" seatpost size (27.0)

A very versatile bike in general. It is very forgiving on rooty and rocky terrain despite being a fully rigfor me. It came with tektro disc brakes which were ok until it got wet, then it becomes a squealing banshee. My biggest gripe is the non-replaceable hanger. I bent it and now I could not get it perfectly aligned hence a slightly scraping RD.

This is my 1st 29r.

Great price for solid, reliable 29er with mechanical disc brakes. All the entry-level components on mine work very well. eDiscount Bikes replaced OEM fork with Black Ops carbon unit at no cost due to shipping damage!

At this price ... what?

Wanted to try a 29er and it made sense to replace my old non-suspension mtn bike. Wow, am I surprised. I've tasted the 29er kool-aid and I won't be going back. All of the advantages of the larger wheels/tires are immediately apparent on this bike. I'm 5'11" and 180 lbs and the large frame fits me perfectly. I really, really like this bike. While it came with budget components, they all work well for me. The WTB seat really surprised me, I usually have a hard time finding one that fits. I did have to tighten the spokes and tune both wheels, but no big deal. The Tektro brakes work great as well, just don't contaminate them. For the price, this bike provides disproportionate mtn biking fun. I think this bike is going to be a lot more expensive than I thought, since I'm now going to have to replace my full-suspension bike with a 29er.

2009 GT Peace replaced my first mtn bike, a 1984 Univega Alpina Uno used for winter and cruising. Main mtn bike has been a 2009 Cannondale Rush.

Frame, wheels, tires, crankset, shifters, disc brakes.

Rear derialleur ghost shifts under load. Brake levers touchy.

Nice bike for the money. The steel frame rides and handles nice with Reba fork and 29er wheels.

Raleigh XXIX SS. Gt full-suspension, Trek 7000, Schwinn s9.5, Schwinn Paramount, Gt Avalanche.

Reynolds 520, Geometry, Paint.

Most of the parts are mediocre, breaks rub, poor wheel build (at least one spoke nipple front and rear became loose), cranks make a creaking sound. Less than 90 days riding.

This bike should come as a frame kit, it rides great, fits great, well made...this bike deserves really bada$$ parts hung on it, the parts it comes with suck, I expected allot better build for the money. You want a great bike, I highly recommend this one, upgrade it though, and it will be gold!

G.T. Psyclone, (pre-Trek) Bontrager Race OR, Diamond Back Apex, Giant Cadex, Cannondale, Blk Mrkt Three57...and many more I can't even remember

excellent geometry

none for the price paid

I have been out of mtb riding since 2004. This august 2010 i decided to get back into it. I was wondering if I would be disspointed in the peace after owning a $1400.00 rocky mountain blizzard. I am not, the peace fits me better. I can upgrade a few things later if I want for the difference in price. I got the 2009 model for cheap from performance, gt is dropping the steel in 2011 for aluminum again. For the money in the sub $600.00 range you can not beat it. I have trouble with fit, the peace has a long and sloped top tube which helps my long reach but poor standover issues. It is obvious GT has its roots in BMX, it works well at the skate park too.

rocky mountain blizzard, jamis dakota

Price. Durable components. Bike has really taken a beating and comes back for more.

None that i have found so far. Everyone complains about seatpost slippage but mine stays where i put it. I weigh 180 lbs. and had no trouble with slippage.

This bike rocks!! I love flipping the finger at all my friends on their full suspension 26" mountain bikes they spent thousands of dollars on. They are starting to not like riding with me because they can't keep up with me anymore!! This bike climbs like a mountain goat and will descend faster than I probably should be going. I run about 20lbs of pressure in the front tire and that takes a lot off the rigid setup. Once you get used to riding a bike like this, you will ask yourself why you spent so much money on other bikes. Yes, the bike is heavy (30 lbs.) but I just smile when my friens brag aboud how much their bikes weigh. They know I spent a fraction of the cost on a bike that they can't keep up with. I'm into the whole 29er thing now and I am not looking back. I rode my Trek 4300 the other day (a 26" bike) and I felt like I was riding a kids bike... Bottom Line -- This bike is AWESOME for the measley 560 bucks I spent on it. This is the most fun I've ever had mountain biking.

Bombproof steel frame and fork, wheels seem strong also, and so far all of the mechanical stuff is holding up. No breakdowns at all.

As stated elsewhere, seat post clamp needed to be replaced, a POS that just kept slipping due to composite bushing under level arm. WTB tires didn't really work well in deep gravel situations and cornering for my normal riding areas, but no tire does it all.

This bike will last a long time, fork alone is like 3# overall +30# for the whole bike; weight queens need not apply. Geometry on the GT was the inital draw as I like longish top tubes, have not had any toe overlap issues, which I've read is an issue on certain makes and something to look out for. Frame made for 80mm fork but I'll probably leave it rigid, it's fun as it is plus keeps it simple and low maintenance. Wheels are still running true had my doubts about strength, but so far it's all good. Tektro brakes took awhile to get adjusted right, still don't feel like the BB7s on my other bikes, but useable initially very grabby, prone to skidding. WTB tires swapped out for 2.2 Nevegals much better for deep gravel traction out here and I think better cornering tire overall. Currently running as 2X9 22/32/bash, top gearing ridiculous for offroad especially with 29. This bike has brought back some of the original fun of mountain biking, this was my entry into 29ers and believe it; 29ers definitely roll easier, in fact I will pickup and maintain speed that my 26er FS could only dream of, they really rail on singletrack. It can actually get away from you a bit the first few rides hitting corners too fast over familiar trails. Bike feels lighter riding than the +30# would indicate but it's also ~20# light than my FS IH7p3. You can standup and pedal up insanely steep stuff on this bike also. This is probably the best overall value on any mtb or any other bike I've owned, but definitely the best value out of the 7 or 8 previous mtb bikes. If your looking to get into the 29ers and can hookup the deal like these 2008 models I don't think you can do any better.

Other past rigids, Bridestone MB-2, Nishikis, & GTs back in the 80s/90s but all 26ers

Has anyone seen any info on the 29er offering coming from GT?

gt peace tour review

Yeah, I've been lucky enough to even ride it a time or two. For me the plus's include a stiff frame and great handling. The only thing I didn't care for was it is coming out with V-brakes. Next years model will have disc's.

MendonCycleSmith said: True to a point, but also, it seems like a company trying to "buy" some street cred, which is always lame. Kinda like McDonalds co-opting some bogus hip hop marketing to appear hip again, and again, and again. Pacific should just stick to what they know, and be true to it, building crappy bikes with steel V brakes, and Shimano SIS "Index Shift Systems" (oooh, Ma, I want that, it's got Sheemano) = Click to expand...
Guitar Ted said: This is your perception and a valid one for you. I doubt; however, that most average trail bicyclist would even know who owns GT Bicycles now. The main problem, if any, with their "street cred" is that it's nigh unto impossible to find a dealer to even test ride a GT now a days. Since you don't see many, or even have an opportunity to test ride one, the resulting credibility will be lacking. That's my take on it anyway. Click to expand...

Theres nothing wrong with GT bikes. They are extremely strong and extremely reliable - I presume their are questions over their inventiveness or how readilly they get new shiny things. But then again I-Drive was a stable pedalling platform before anyone else had one. I have one myself, can't remeber if I got it before or after Pacific Cycles took over, Brookvale Bike Factory in Oz still deals in GT, oh yeh, Schwinn suck

GT told me... ...about 1 year ago that they have no plans for a FS 29er through their 2007 model year.

its all good agruing We can all bad Pacific, but hell they, just like Redline and Raliegh are doing what the other "BIG" companies wont do, produce affordable 29ers, they are giving exposure to those without huge budgets, all the more power I saw, to get people into 29er we should be patting them on the back and supporting them not being bike snobs and cutting the off at the knees! Anyway does anyone hane some more concrete info on this bike, geometry wise I mean? Any more ride report would be appreciated. P.S. down here in Aust the top GT hardtail, the Avalanche Pro, just got 9.5/10, against Kona scott, trek, orbea, norco. And has sold out nation wide B4 the review even hit the newsstands! This being the case just how bad can a GT actually be?:madman:

ps more pics is possible Gt if ur listening Guys any pics would be great, seems the one's on twentynineinches.com any1 got any more, other than Sea Otter?

Yes, you have a very good point there. What is needed is geared versions for under the $1,000.00 price range like the Gary Fisher Cobia. Hopefully KHS will be doing just that when they introduce their 29ers.

Products made by Pacific are good for serving a few different audiences: 1) a newbie who doesn't want to spring big bucks on a new ride. 2) a good rider who doesn't have the cash for a better offering. 3) a mountain biker who wants a cheap road bike to thrash on the road or put on the trainer for the winter, or the roadie who wants a cheap mountain bike to kick around on for fun. I fall into the last category. I bought a 2005 Schwinn Fastback. Even after throwing on some eggies, a new stem, and a nifty carbon fiber water bottle cage, I came in at around $450 all in. You just can't beat that. The bike is perfect for what I use it for. Obvisously, if I got way into road riding, I would obviously opt for something much, much better. Look, Pacific's target audience is not for the hardcore, experienced, racer/rider. It's target audience is novices, folks on a budget, and people looking for a 2nd/3rd bike to kick around (or some combination of those). You kind of just have to accept them for what they are.

MendonCycleSmith said: True, but there is a larger social and economic consequence of crappy goods, available to all. Our grandparents generation made due with less, scrimped and saved to buy what they really wanted. As a result, they bought better quality goods, took better care of them, and handed them down to our parents, etc. Bikes don't truely fit this, as they may not be the right size to hand down, but the thought remains. By allowing folks to buy everything they want, in every price point, you encourage lack of concern for it's well being, and a throw-away society that fills landfills at an alarming rate. This also creates children who have no regard for money, or what it provides. Cheap goods, are just not good. Save for what you need, you'll appreciate it more. Right. My sister has a low end trek "mountain" bicycle. It's the same kind of junk as a walmart bike, but it cost her $100 more. But at least ot was built by the same shoptech who builds the Fuels For all the badmouthing of those bikes, I see about 5 of them for avery 1 decent bike on the road riding around for basic transportation. As for GT bikes. I don't like that seatstay/toptube thing. Not even a little bit. -M

brozek said: And which large bike company is following this philosophy? For those of you that perceive GT as a entry-level or third-bike brand, maybe you're missing bikes like the DHI, IT-1, I-Drive 5 1.0, and Ruckus I-Drive 1.0 - all $3000+ bikes that I, at least, would certainly have to "scrimp and save" to afford. Doesn't every bike company offer bikes in the $350-600 price range? Why does GT take so much more heat for it than Trek, Specialized, or Giant? Click to expand...
MendonCycleSmith said: GT used to be an independent, stand alone brand, with it's own R+D dept, and manufacturing process. They got in financial hot water during a time of heated buy-outs, and were unable to stay above water, they folded. They sat, tied to Schwinn, Syncros etc, and got bought by Pacific who had been building CRAP for years. They wanted to get a bit of high end credibility, and move into that market, of shop quality bikes. Since they are now tainted by that association, GT is considered to be a Pacific sub brand, unable to escape their tractor beam of crap. May not be true, but I still wouldn't buy one, I prefer working with stand alone companies that have passion for twhat they make, instead of shareholders being the primary driving force. But I'm an anti corporate guy, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt= Sure, all the other companies build cheap stuff, but they charge a bit more, and tend to use bottom end "real" components, instead of Vietnamese knock-off, poorly executed "Shamino" brand, or some other such goofy mis-spelled sneak through component. Other than that, yes, GT/Schwinn stuff is very comparable to other low end stuff, many just prefer their bikes get built by the guy that also builds better stuff, and knows a V brake from a Canti. Read Your Way Through Accra

Bus stations. Traffic stops. Beaches. There’s no telling where you’ll find the next story in Accra, Ghana’s capital. Peace Adzo Medie shares some of her favorites.

By Peace Adzo Medie

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books.

Accra is rich with stories, some of them only a few words long — Still Hustling; Work Hard and Dream Big; Short Ways Are Dangerous — and written in bold letters on the rear windows of tro tros, the ubiquitous minibuses that ferry residents and visitors around the city. These mantras are meant to represent the people who own the buses. But they also tell of life in Accra, and what it takes to make it in this vibrant city.

Accra, Ghana’s capital, is in the southern part of the country and borders the Atlantic Ocean. For centuries, its coastline has served as an entry point for people both from neighboring countries and from farther away. Ghanaian writers have found rich material in the city, the home of the Ga people. And writers from other African countries and the diaspora, such as Wole Soyinka and Maya Angelou, have called Accra home, even if only for a short time.

Though much of Accra’s creative activity has taken place in centers like the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, interest in stories and books permeates the city.

Merchants selling books line many thoroughfares. There is a good chance that, when you stop at a major traffic light, a bookseller, wares in hand, will come to your window and try to get you to buy at least one. Even bus stations can be a treasure trove. One of my favorite activities as a teenager was shopping for books at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a busy bus station in the heart of the city, where volumes are neatly arranged in stalls or on canvas spread out on the ground. And when I didn’t have enough money for a book, Accra still came through for me: I could always read and imagine the stories behind the one-liners on the buses idling nearby.

What should I read before I pack my bags?

Nii Ayikwei Parkes’s “ Tail of the Blue Bird ” brings the city to life. This slim novel is set in Accra and Sonokrom, a small village. Kayo, a forensic pathologist working in Accra, has been forced by a high-ranking police officer to investigate a sinister discovery in the village.

The novel’s lyrical prose and rich dialogue, which incorporates Ghanaian words and phrases, make it delightful to read. Through Kayo’s work, outings with friends and encounters with the police, we see different aspects of life in Accra, while his time in Sonokrom and interactions with the village’s intriguing inhabitants offer a glimpse of how people outside the center relate to the city.

If you prefer nonfiction, Ato Quayson’s “ Oxford Street, Accra: City Life and the Itineraries of Transnationalism ” offers an excellent introduction to the city. It takes the reader on a journey through Accra’s history, showing its evolution from a fishing village to a port town during British colonial rule, to a vibrant metropolis that draws in people from around the country and the world. With Oxford Street, a bustling commercial corridor, as a starting point, Quayson evokes the sights and sounds of the city with keen attention to how people interact with each other and their surroundings. Forays into the salsa and gym scenes underline the transnational dimensions of life in Accra.

What books or authors should I bring along with me?

Accra is at the heart of Yepoka Yeebo’s “ Anansi’s Gold: The Man Who Looted the West, Outfoxed Washington, and Swindled the World .” This work of nonfiction is a wild ride about one of the boldest scams of the 1970s and ‘80s, carried out by John Ackah Blay-Miezah, a charismatic Ghanaian. Blay-Miezah promised huge returns to thousands of investors from around the world, tied to a bogus trust fund allegedly set up by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president. While Blay-Miezah targeted victims across the world, his dealings with government officials and other businesspeople in Accra facilitated his scam and, ultimately, contributed to its end. The book is a meticulously researched and riveting account of politics and money in post-independence Ghana.

Fictional stories of murder can also be doorways into Accra. In “ Sleep Well My Lady ,” by Kwei Quartey, a female detective’s investigation of a murder offers a glimpse into the lives of the rich and the not-so-rich of the city. In Kobby Ben Ben’s “ No One Dies Yet ,” Accra is the scene of mystery and sex, in a meeting of Ghana and its diaspora.

What books can show me other facets of the city?

There is always something to discover in Accra, even for people who are already familiar with the city. It helps to know the right people, though — or at least the right books.

“ Accra Noir ,” edited by Nana-Ama Danquah, is a collection of 13 stories set throughout pockets of the city. Their characters encounter the kind of sky-high hurdles that a thriving, cutthroat metropolis puts in the way of its residents — unemployment, corruption, abuse of power. And, determined to make it, these characters do not hesitate to adopt creative and extreme methods, often in places that are hidden from view: hotel rooms and bedrooms, dark alleys and a market at night.

Serena Owusua Dankwa’s “ Knowing Women: Same Sex-Intimacy, Gender, and Identity in Postcolonial Ghana ” is also about finding joy when the conditions are unyielding. It is a study of same-sex desire among women and of their relationships, which happen in every part of Ghana, yet aren’t typically visible in the open. The historical discussion of same-sex desire and intimacy in Ghana, and Africa more broadly, is illuminating, and dislodges widely held reductive ideas about the subject. Dankwa’s interviews with women, including female athletes, both in Accra and in a midsize town, reveal a great deal about desire and intimacy and the influences of class and social norms.

If I have no time for day trips, what books should I read instead?

Books of poetry are one way to travel around Ghana. Kofi Anyidoho’s collection “The Place We Call Home” is rhythmic in its treatment of history and the present. Anyidoho is also the editor of a book of poetry by another Ghanaian great, Kofi Awoonor. “The Promise of Hope: New and Selected Poems, 1964-2013” beautifully renders life in Ghana and abroad.

“The Girl Who Can,” by Ama Ata Aidoo, a writer with a towering legacy , is a collection of stories that explores girlhood and womanhood. Aidoo’s novel “Changes: A Love Story” chronicles one woman’s attempts to live and love on her own terms.

For books that take you on journeys into the past, start with Ayi Kwei Armah’s “The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born.” This classic of Ghanaian literature unfolds during the 1960s and follows an unnamed railway clerk determined to stay on the straight and narrow path — unlike others around him. “ The Hundred Wells of Salaga, ” by Ayesha Harruna Attah, is set in the 19th century. In this novel, the trade in enslaved people plays a major role in changing the lives of two young women. Yaa Gyasi’s “ Homegoing ” goes further back, to the 18th century, to narrate the outcomes of one family’s encounters with the West.

What’s a good place to curl up with a book on a day off?

Accra is a city of beaches and, in addition to sunshine and a cool breeze, a few of its waterfronts have the ambience that make for a good reading experience. But I’m partial to green spaces, many of which are beyond the city limits. Aburi, in the Eastern Region, is a short drive outside Accra. Situated on a hill, the town is cool and has several spots where you can curl up with a book while enjoying the lush scenery.
