The clouds nearing the cliff get sucked into the pitfall area below and thrown vertically into the sky. This creates the impression of the vertical cloud burst.

  • Trip Name: Harishchandragad Trek
  • Time: 2 days 1 night
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Height: 4,665 ft
  • Base: Khireshwar/Belpada

Harishchandragad trek is certainly one of the most challenging treks you can go for in the state of Maharashtra. The trip is suited for seasoned trekkers with decent experience in mountaineering and/or rock climbing. The Harishchandragad trek route through Nalichi will offer you a range of thrilling challenges that would make your trip a memorable one.

Harishchandragad is a hill fort located in the Ahmednagar district in the Malshej Ghat . With a maximum altitude of 4,665, it makes for a fairly high climb and a challenging trek. However, the journey is fairly rewarding once you reach the top.

The fort is fairly ancient and has historical significance attached to it. Its origin is said to have been in the 6 th  century during the reign of the Kalchuri dynasty. However, you will encounter caves on the top that are said to have been carved during the 11 th  century.

The Harishchandragad fort is surrounded by various ancient structures that suggest the existence of diverse cultures in the past. The fort is surrounded by the Kedareshwar cave, Harishchandreshwar temple, Saptateertha Pushkarni, and other caves, adding to the scenic beauty of the location.

One of the major highlights of the Harishchandragad trek is Konkan Kada. Konkan Kada is an overhanging cliff that provides you with a beautiful and majestic view of the Konkan region from the top. It is a beautiful wall that stands tall and has a concave structure. This allows you a scenic view, vertical cloud bursts, circular rainbows, and many other picturesque phenomena.

The clouds coming closer to the cliff get sucked into the pitfall below and are thrown vertically into the sky, making for a breathtaking view. Especially when the valley is slightly covered with mist and the sun is exactly behind the person facing the valley, they can see a beautiful circular rainbow making its way from one end of the clouds to the other.

Along with the scenic beauty, Harishchandragad trek would allow you to see many temples, caves, and Pushkarni once you reach the top. All these structures represent the cultures thriving during the 6 th  century. You will also find several fine artistic carvings on the rocks and stone sculptures that prevailed during ancient India.

One of the best examples of marvellous ancient architecture is the Harishchandreshwar temple. The temple had been carved out of a single rock and stands tall on the hill, adding to its beauty. Another marvel worth visiting is the Kedareshwar cave located to the right side of the Harishchandra temple. The cave bears a Shiva Linga surrounded by water. It is often pretty difficult for the visitors to reach the center of the cave as the surrounding water is always very cold.

Highlights Of The Trek

  • Circular rainbow (if visible)
  • Harishchandreshwar temple

KonkanKada is basically a magnificent wall. It has a concave like structure. Due to such structure, you get to see many natural phenomena like vertical cloud burst and circular rainbow. You will also get astounding view of Konkan region. Sunset from this point is just marvelous.

2.Sculptural Marvel Harishchandreshwar Temple :

The temple is an architectural marvel it is covered by caves from all the sides. Temple’s structure is inspired from south Indian temples. One of the most amazing things about this temple is that it was carved from a single piece of rock.

3 . Mysterious Kedareshwar Cave :

This cave has a massive Shivalinga inside covered with water from all the sides. Besides the Shivalinga there are four pillars which provides support to cave. In this cave you can see a Shiva Linga that stands 5 feet tall. Normally, the level of the water is up to the waist. Kedareshwar cave temple is quite unlike any other temple you’ve ever seen before.

Several carvings inside this cave indicate that it was built during the Medieval era. As you can see, the Shivlinga is surrounded by four pillars. Located in the middle of Kedareshwar cave, there are four pillars that symbolize the four Yugas: Satya Yuga, Tretha Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. The cave stands on one of these pillars, as three of the pillars have fallen. Accordingly, it is believed the end of the world will come when this pillar breaks off.

Route Information : There are 3 popular ways to get to the fort. One via Khireshwar Village, via Nalichi Vaat [Extremely difficult] and the easiest one via Pachnai Village . The Khireshwar village route is the one that most people prefer as it offers a lot of scenic beauty while trekking. But this route is also a bit time consuming.

From Pune to Khireshwar : Head towards ALEPHATA on NH 50 (Nasikh highway) which is approx 96 kms from Pune. From ALEPHATA turn left to reach a small town named OTUR. From OTUR reach the village KHIRESHWAR which is the base village. THE ROAD FROM OTUR TO KHIRESHWAR IS ALONG THE WATERS OF PIMPALGAON JOGA DAM, here you will have a amazing view of natural beauty.

From Mumbai to Khireshwar: From Mumbai reach KALYAN, From KALYAN head on NH 222 towards MALSHEJ GHAT. After ascending MALSHEJ GHAT there is a diversion for the village KHIRESHWAR. PLZ ASK THE LOCALS FOR THIS DIVERSION. After reaching the village KHIRESHWAR you can start your trek through TOLAR KHIND. There are 2 more alternate routes to Harishchandragad, but we would recommend you go via Khireshwar coz this is the best route and offers good view while trekking and is a bit tough.

From Pune to Pachnai Village [Route 2] : The route is as follows Pune-Alephata-Sangamner-Akole-Rajur-Pachnai. Pachnai is the base village where you can park your vehicles and start the trek. From Mumbai to Pachnai Village [Route 2]:  The route is as follows Mumbai-Igatpuri-Ghoti-Bari-Rajur-Pachnai.

Route via PUBLIC TRANSPORT from Pune : Travelers from Pune will have to take a ST[State Transport] Bus from Shivaji Nagar. You can take any bus that goes to Sangamner or Nasik. Get down at Alephata and then take a local bus from Alephata to Khube Phata. Ask the locals for transport options from Alephata. From Khubi, a 3-4 kilometres walk will take you to the base village of Harishchandragad fort called Khireshwar.

We would recommend that if you have novice trekkers in your group, then you should go via the Pachnai Village. This route is the easiest one and even beginner trekkers should not have any issues. Also take a guide from the village if you've never been here.

Keep walking along the same path until you see a vaghoba वाघोबा (Tigar) sculpture. It is the symbol of the tribal people’s faith in nature. It will take you 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach this point. This location is the starting point of the Tolar Khind. This gorge is the link between Pune and Ahmednagar districts. The history of tribal revolutionary Raghoji Bhangare remains glorious here.
