Scottish Breweries and Craft Beer

harviestoun brewery tour

With over 120 active distilleries spread across Scotland, a distillery tour is a must for any visitor. In Scotland, distilleries are split into five whisky-producing regions; Campbeltown, Highland, Islay, Lowland and Speyside. Where a whisky is made, can have a huge bearing on its flavour. For instance, everything from the source of the water to the presence of peat in the local area will come through in the taste. Speyside is the largest whisky-producing region, which in fact boasts almost two thirds of Scotland’s distilleries. Speyside lies below the Grampian Mountain range between Inverness and Aberdeen and all the distilleries are located on the River Spey or adjoining rivers. Below is a selection of some of the more famous distilleries around Scotland. All of which offer some wonderful distillery tours in addition to tasting experiences. A great way to spend some ‘Off the Course’ time. Talk to us today about including a visit to your favourite whisky distillery within your Scottish Golf Tour. We are happy to recommend options for whisky distillery tours depending on where you are playing during your time in Scotland.

harviestoun brewery tour

With their slogan ‘save the planet, drink organic’, the brewery is very proud that everything used in their brewing process is organic. As a result this is what gives their beer its distinct fresh and natural taste. The water is drawn from their own private source. In addition the malting barely used comes from their very own 125 acre organic farm. The spent grain is then fed to their flock of Hebridean sheep in one sustainable cycle.

Black Isle first began in 1998 and now produces up to 10,000 litres of beer a day; distributing to locations in Scotland and around the world, including Sweden and Japan. The brewery also has 2 bars, one located in the city of Inverness nearby to the brewery and one in Fort William.

Black Isle

Interesting fact:  Every year the brewery is joined by a friendly team of international visitors known as  WWoofers . They live and learn about life on organic farms and stay on site at the bothy house, to support and help maintain the farm and gardens.

Now, Brewdog has grown to become Scotland’s largest independent brewery; with a state of the art eco Brewery in Ellon, North Aberdeen and 65 bars across the globe! Excitingly, Brewdog also opened another eco brewery across the Atlantic Ocean. Located in Columbus Ohio with the world’s first craft beer themed hotel, ‘The DogHouse’, right nextdoor. Not a bad day’s work for the guys!! We would definitely recommend enjoying a Dogwalk Brewery Tour if golfing in the area of Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Eden Mill, St Andrews

harviestoun brewery tour

Less than 5 miles from The Old Course in St Andrews, Eden Mill is a must visit for any beer lover staying in the area. The story begins a very long time ago in 1810, when the famous Haig family ran Seggie distillery until 1860. It was then later reopened as a paper mill in 1872. It continued to operate as a paper mill until 2008. In 2012 Fife businessman Paul Miller, resurrected the site and opened Eden Mill. It is in fact Scotland’s first and original single site combined brewery and distillery. Along with beer, Eden Mill also produce whisky and gin – something for everyone! In 2015, they launched their ‘Golf Gin’ in homage to their connection to St Andrews.

Eden Mill’s craft beer and IPA range offer a variety of styles from a Belgian-inspired wheat beer to a unique spiced porter and a classic hop-heavy IPA. Their bourbon and whisky barrels also give them the opportunity to offer uniquely aged craft beers. Every year Eden Mill produce limited edition seasonal brews.

Eden Mill

Interesting fact:  Their 19th Brew beer is available to golfers on the 9th hole of The Old Course, St Andrews. The refreshing, light, citrusy ale is the perfect pick me up for the next 9 holes!

Harviestoun Brewery is located at the foot of the stunning Ochil Hills, in the small town of Alva. Also within 20 miles of Gleneagles, a visit to this Scottish brewery is ideal when playing golf in the Perthshire area. From the founder, Ken Brooker, brewing in his back garden shed in 1983, Harviestoun has grown to become one of Scotland’s top breweries. Extremely innovative, they have also been well respected on the US craft scene since 1999. One of Harviestoun’s signature beers is the award winning ‘Champagne of Lagers’, ‘Schiehallion’, which was first created in 1994. The name comes from one of the best known Munros (mountain over 3,00 feet in height) in Scotland located in Perth and Kinross. One of their other famous beers, is Ola Dubh, 12yr old aged in Highland Park whisky casks.

Harviestoun Brewery was originally established on a farm in Dollar Glen in the east of Scotland by Ken Brooker, a former constructor of wooden prototype models at the Ford Motor Company in Dagenham. Ken turned his passion for home brewing into a career. The brewery is perhaps most noted for its Ola Dubh barrel-aged beers which are brewed in partnership with Highland Park.

Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park team up for range of limited edition cask ales

Two scottish drinks businesses have collaborated to create a range of limited edition ales..

harviestoun brewery tour

Harviestoun Brewery has teamed up with Orkney’s Highland Park Single Malt Scotch Whisky to release a choice of rare, limited-edition, whisky cask ales in time for Christmas.

For the first time in six years, real craft ale and whisky connoisseurs alike will get the chance to put Harviestoun Brewery’s Ola Dubh 40-Year-Old Reserve at the top of their Christmas tipple list, complete with a special presentation gift box.

Ola Dubh, meaning ‘Black Oil’ in Scots Gaelic, is a real labour of hand-crafted love for Harviestoun’s brew team.

It is the result of maturing the brewery’s Old Engine Oil stout in 40-Year-Old whisky casks from the award-winning Orkney distillery, Highland Park, for at least six months.

The team say that 'the result is a highly complex and beautifully balanced mahogany black dark ale. Aromas of smoky peat, nutmeg and vanilla are complemented by sweet notes of toffee, dark chocolate, soft dark fruits and fragrant orange zest.'

Harviestoun Brewery, based in Alva near Stirling, is rolling out only 120 bottles of Ola Dubh 40-year-old Reserve as an online exclusive from 5pm on Wednesday 2 December, including next day delivery around Scotland and the rest of the UK.

This rare limited-edition bottling is expected to sell out within days, so people are being encouraged to get their orders in quickly to avoid disappointment.

Ola Dubh 18-year-old limited-edition is also available in a special gift pack. Ola Dubh 12-Year-Old and Old Engine Oil can be purchased in individual cases and gift packs.

For foodies, Old Dubh matches well with festive favourites, including venison and brisket, roasted vegetables such as parsnips, carrots and tatties, as well as chocolate brownies and all hard and soft strong cheese, such as Anster or Isle of Mull Cheddar.

Stuart Cail has been master brewer at Harviestoun Brewery for over 20 years, and said: “We’re extremely proud to be working with our friends at Highland Park once again to release our very special, limited edition Ola Dubh 40-Year-Old Reserve and wider Ola Dubh range in time for Christmas.

"With only 120 bottles up for grabs, people need to get to the front of the queue, because once it’s gone, it’s gone.

“Ola Dubh is a labour of love. Everything about it is extreme. The brew team fill the mash tuns to the brim with roast barley, pinhead oats and malted barley. It ferments more slowly as the yeast struggles to move around in such a viscous beer.

“The base beer is Old Engine Oil which we put into Highland Park Whisky casks and it stays there for at least six months.

"During this time the flavours from the wood enter the beer to produce Ola Dubh. The process is far from simple, but the result is a beautiful brew with complimentary whisky notes and a chocolate, roasty and bittersweet aftertaste.”

Gordon Motion, master whisky maker at Highland Park, added: “We’ve had fun working with Harviestoun over the years and expect the new release to be really popular.

"We always use the best quality casks available to mature our whisky. For this project, we gave Harviestoun the precious casks which previously held our 40-Year-Old single malt which were primarily American oak casks, this has provided a delicate peat and spicy flavour to the beer.”

Ola Dubh 40-year-old reserve [8% ABV] will be available to buy at Harviestoun Brewery’s online shop , priced at £20 per 330ml bottle, including next day delivery around Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Highland Park’s new 40-Year-Old Spring 2019 Release has just launched. For more information, visit their website .

Beer Review: Harviestoun Brewery Ltd. Old Engine Oil Engineer’s Reserve Blackest Ale

OldEngineOilReserve1

Brewery: Harviestoun Brewery Ltd. Beer: Old Engine Oil Engineer’s Reserve Blackest Ale Style: English Porter ABV: 9% Character: Their Old Engine Oil brewed up to 9% ABV. Brewed with three hop varieties and roasted barley Ratings at the time of Review: BA: 94 | RB: 99 Metal Connection: VIOLATOR – Apocalypse Engine

Rating: 4.5/5

OldEngineOilReserve

“We brewed this after feedback from the USA suggested the abv of our original Old Engine Oil (6%) was too low for their tastes
So we created this intensely flavoured but incredibly smooth 9% brew especially for them! NOT AVAILABLE IN THE UK.”

The label of this beer is a traditional style oval label complete with a ribbon draped across it with the beer’s name. Very traditional and old school, and mainstream looking. Within the background in the oval crest design is an old black and white photo drawing of a mechanic working on a n old vehicle. The fonts used for the brewery name and beer name are very traditional and nothing fancy at all, but placed in the right spots to grab your attention. A tag line is written on the bottom that reads “Viscous ‱ Malt Chocolaty ‱ Roasty.”

I used an appropriate English pub style pint glass for this session. This English Porter poured a very dark brown that was damn near black in color. It was opaque and thick motor oil looking. This beer was crowned with a large two inch dark khaki colored foamy head. The head vanished rather quickly, which left little to no lacing down the glass, which was rather surprising considering how thick the head was upon the pour.

The nose was filled with a lot of dark characters. Nice roasted malts and heavy caramel hit first, followed by some bitter sweet chocolate. There are some dark fruit notes within the aroma such as plums, prunes, dates and raisins. There is a nice boozy burn in the nose from the alcohol. Overall, the aroma was a bit muted, and not very powerful as  I get with most English beers.

Chocolate and caramel make their presence known first to the taste buds. There is a roasted malt and dark fruit body, full of bitter sweet chocolate, plum, prunes, dates, and raisins. There is a small hint of grassy hop character. There is heavy heat from the alcohol. This one feels a lot stronger than 9%, for sure. A good mixture f caramel, dark fruits, and chocolate linger in the aftertaste.

The body is surprisingly light, but yet again, most English beers have that light feeling to them. At least the ones I have had. The mouthfeel is oily and creamy. There is a presence of alcohol heat on this one.  The finish leaves a mouth coating slickness.

As I said before, I purchased this bottle just because I had never had it before. I really was pleasantly surprised by the story of this beer, and the high ratings it has. Old Engine Oil Engineer’s Reserve Blackest Ale really caught me off guard. It really was roasted, chocolaty, and especially the overall bitterness of this beer. back in 2013, I had the base Old Engine Oil, and I gave it a 3.5/5 rating, but I was also very new at reviewing craft beer. I would love to taste it again to give it a more mature rating.

Harviestoun Brewery

Harviestoun Brewery is a pioneering producer of high-quality craft beer. We have been brewing in the shadow of the Ochil Hills in Clackmannanshire since 1983. Our beers are made with the soft local water and half our barley is grown within eight miles of the brewery. Now Scotland’s most-awarded brewery, we consider ourselves a modern classic. We are proud to be a family-owned brewery and are huge believers in the quality of our beer, brewed in a beautiful part of Scotland, as well as in the potential of our company that has its roots in home-brewing.

Celebrate the Oregon Hop Festival with fresh hops, craft beer

Portrait of Em Chan

As summer bleeds into fall, so does festival season. Why not add in a hop celebration before everything pumpkin and grapes begins?

That was the line of thought by the team at TopWire Hop Project, located in Woodburn. The popular beer garden's first annual Oregon Hop Festival is scheduled at the premises on Sept. 7, from noon to 6 p.m. This family and dog-friendly event is expected to give folks a chance to bring together hop and craft beer enthusiasts while enjoying the beer garden.

It's a celebration that invites the community to explore the heritage of hop farming in Oregon, especially as Crosby Hop Farm is a fifth-generation farm, said Christine Clair, vice president of marketing.

Hops are harvested once a year, for about 30 days, and the festival will be happening right in the middle of this period. This year's harvest session begins Aug. 21 and once it is over, the hops will be processed into pellets through the winter.

Guests to the event can enjoy guided tours of the hop fields and processing facilities and sensory experience to smell and touch the freshly harvested hops. There will also be a curated beer list including the first fresh hop beers of the season and a special collaboration beer. Crosby Hop Farm has partnered with Russian River Brewing to debut an exclusive brew called Growers' Tribute IPA, made exclusively with Crosby Hops. All guests will also receive a commemorative glass.

The idea for the festival took shape at the beginning of summer, and hosting the festival during peak harvest gives folks the chance to have lots of hop varieties to experience, Clair said.

Besides the beer and hops-related programming, there will also be live music, food vendors and family-friendly activities. Music by Redwood Revue will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.; Neon Prairie Dogs from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and Dadweed from 4 to 5:30 p.m. A variety of food vendors will be on the premises, with an official list to be announced. Kids can enjoy face painting and games.

"We are excited to welcome the public for the first time to experience the Oregon hop harvest," Blake Crosby, founder and CEO, said. "Oregon is renowned for producing some of the highest quality hops ... and we look forward to celebrating with fellow enthusiasts of craft beer."

General admission is $25 per person 21 and over, while those under have complimentary admission. Admission includes the glass, one beer, a harvest tour, the sensory experience and live music. Tickets can also be purchased onsite before and during the event. To purchase tickets online and find more info, check out the website, topwirehp.com .
