The show for Highly Suspect at Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas was Amazing!! I flew in from Louisville, Ky. just for these guys, because they put on a very worthy show every single time!! I was thrilled to see Rich Meyer (Bass) & Ryan Meyer (Drums) crowd surfing during the show, it always brings smiles over the crowd. Johnny Stevens (Lead guitar/ Vocals) loves his fans, he is always willing to do whatever it takes to ignite the room. I've seen them 11 times now, and this NEVER gets old!! MCID= My Crew is Dope is the Best way to explain them!!

jessica-bradshaw’s profile image

Johnny Stevens is, hands down... all up and down, the very best thing to happen to music!

The band’s diversity is exactly what I never knew, I always wanted.

Hand to God, I listen to an extremely wide variety of music - gospel/bluegrass to Pantera, Otis Redding or Taj Mahal to Odesza- obsessed with UGK and Santana, all the way to Sade and even with that obtuse appreciation of every genre under the sun, I’ve lost some excitement with the 5,000 songs in my iTunes library.

Motown to Country Classics then to big haired headbangers followed by gangsta rap and I was not feeling the soul touching, spirit awakening like I once had.

Most of what’s played on the radio makes me want to hit something with my car, vomit and die. I swear to God, Beyoncé could be used for torture tactics and Taylor Swift has 46 identical, unimaginative hits and I cannot stomach the nonsense of Kanye West and all his boiz talkin’ ‘bout hoes and cars and fat stacks of cash big as their bitches ass, any more!

Highly Suspect wedged their way into my life, with much apprehension, I’m highly suspect of any mainstream, hipsteresque conformist bullshit and it seemed that way to me at first listen, but somewhere in the halfhearted chance I gave them... I was revived! It may sound crazy to give this much heart and soul into a review of such a young band but it’s nothing short of genius- mad genius.

Their style is old and psychedelic yet new age and electronic. It’s distorted and acustic while seamless and chaotic. It’s precise and handsomely in place but somehow full of raging anger and disgust with many issues we all face.

Each song is so multifaceted, it seems one could be three but no matter what genres or point in time Johnny Stevens starts a song, remember that most will take you on a journey through several.

I recommend you open up your mind and heart to full capacity and enjoy the majestic ride and all it’s twists and turns!

They write all their own music and I listen to their albums in their entirety without ever feeling bored or wondering if the track has changed- it’s so rare and it’s so refreshing.

Johnny (I REFUSE TO REFER TO HIM AS, TERRIBLE JOHNNY) has an old soul that shines through in his sung convictions. He will appeal to the young and old in a way never seen before!

Rock on Highly Suspect!!!!!

Highly Suspect’s ‘Ice Cold Winter Tour’ Brings the Heat to St. Louis

Fans rejoice as Highly Suspect wraps up their headlining U.S. tour

Kay Copeland , Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Ledger March 14, 2023

Live music fans in St. Louis, Mo. have a reputation for their passion and energy, and rock group Highly Suspect certainly experienced this first-hand during their sold-out show at The Pageant on March 2. Lead vocalist Johnny Stevens paused between songs to express his appreciation, gazing out at the crowd and declaring, “St. Louis has always felt like home.”

Highly Suspect, originally from Cape Cod, Mass., started as a humble cover band but have since become a 3x Grammy-nominated group that shows no signs of slowing down. They recently headlined the U.S. leg of the “Ice Cold Winter Tour” with a UK leg planned for September, and will also be supporting established artists Muse and Evanescence on tour this April.

The tour’s sole opening act was supposed to be Dead Poet Society , but a change was made to the lineup mere hours before the St. Louis show. Silly Goose , a novice group that had been following Highly Suspect around the country and playing impromptu shows in parking lots, was granted a 20-minute set by the band. Silly Goose took full advantage of the opportunity, playing to an audience of more than 2,000 people, starting and joining multiple mosh pits, all while expressing their gratitude to Highly Suspect for the life-changing experience.

highly suspect winter tour

The opening acts had already set a high bar with their electric performances, but when Highly Suspect took the stage with a 15-track setlist (plus a 2-track encore), the crowd’s energy reached a fever pitch. While the band only played four songs from their newest album, “The Midnight Demon Club,” they showcased their versatility and wide-ranging appeal, keeping the audience on their toes with each new song.

Juggernauts like “My Name Is Human” and “Lydia” were instant fan favorites of the night, but it was the more stripped-back tracks such as “Arizona” and “Serotonia” that really allowed the crowd to savor the power of live music. Highly Suspect also brought some fresh sounds to the mix with their new singles “Ice Cold” and “Natural Born Killer,” which added a refreshing synth pop-rock vibe to the sonically heavy setlist.

In a world where live music has been sorely missed, Highly Suspect’s St. Louis show was a reminder of just how transformative a great concert can be. The band’s passion and energy were palpable, infecting the crowd with a sense of joy and unity that will be remembered long after the final notes fade away.

Hello Kay ,this is the second article I have read written by you about the band highly suspect. As I totally agree with the information and how you felt towards the band and this piece but I literally just clicked off of a story you wrote about the same band and a different light. Not just different but literally bashed them saying that their new music and their new album The demon nightclub is to techno and the fans weren’t satisfied with new album basically I’ll try to link it with this but then I’m just confused because after reading that piece they that k wrote. And now I’m reading this piece so I wonder how you truly feel?

Kay Copeland | Apr 5, 2023 at 8:20 am

Hello Jeannine and thank you for your comment! I would love to further establish my stance: 1. My review of The Midnight Demon Club merely includes my initial reaction to that album and by no means includes my full, nuanced opinion of the band and their discography. 2. TMDC, in my opinion, is not their strongest album and very much strays away from their original “sound.” That doesn’t mean I don’t still enjoy their music. 3. My album review was by no means to “bash” the band. Highly Suspect happens to be one of my favorite bands. Instead, that story’s purpose was to bring attention to a viewpoint (held by a number of long term fans I know), that wasn’t fairly popular for fans to express at the time. 4. I urge you to keep in mind the timeline of when these two stories were published. My review on TMDC was published months before my concert review, before the album had time to grow on me. Now, following the concert, my view on the album has evolved a bit – I now think that TMDC thrives in a live setting in comparison to the studio album.

To put it plainly, my opinion of Highly Suspect (and specifically The Midnight Demon Club) is not cut and dry. I am able to both be a fan and point out what I believe to be areas for improvement. I thank you for your inquiries and hope I was able to adequately explain myself.

Never content to follow, Highly Suspect push rock music forward by trusting their instincts and raising a middle finger to everything else. The multi-GRAMMY® Award-nominated and gold-certified band – Johnny Stevens [vocals, guitar], Ryan Meyer [drums, vocals], Rich Meyer [bass, vocals], Matt Kofos [guitar] and Mark Schwartz [synths] – don’t just talk about burning the rules and breaking the mold; they actually do so. The band’s chemically imbalanced mix of gritty guitars, haunting piano, off-kilter synths, hip-hop production, cinematic vision, and beautifully possessed vocals transformed them into a phenomenon beloved by a diehard global fanbase known as  “MCID”  [My Crew Is Dope].

After grinding it out as an underground curiosity, they scraped a path to mainstream infamousness with their 2015 full-length debut,  Mister Asylum . It earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of  “Best Rock Album”  as the single “Lydia” received a nomination for “Best Rock Song” was certified gold by the RIAA. The 2016 follow-up  The Boy Who Died Wolf  roared to life with the gold-selling “My Name Is Human,” which catapulted to #1 on the  Billboard  Mainstream Rock Chart and garnered a GRAMMY® Nomination for  “Best Rock Song . ”  2019’s  MCID  affirmed them as the rare outfit who could collaborate with Young Thug and Gojira on the same album.  Loudwire  hailed the latter among the  “50 Best Rock Albums of 2019 . ”   With hundreds of millions of streams and sold out shows on multiple continents, Highly Suspect charge ahead of the pack again on 2022’s  The Midnight Demon Club  with no compromises and no apologies as they challenge rock to be dangerous and maybe even life-changing again.

Dead Poet Society

A perfect symbol for Dead Poet Society is the “shitty old seven-string” that guitarist Jack Collins bought at a mall back in high school.

“Our former bass player actually took a soldering iron and soldered the frets off,” he recalls. “You couldn’t play it normally at all. I thought it was going to be a great idea. Years later it was sitting in my closet, and I decided to pick it up again because I got really bored. It became the new way for us to write music — it opened up a door into this whole new world we discovered.”

“It was like, ‘This is the guitar,’ he adds. “It’s like taking something broken and creating art out of it.”

With its wonky intonation, the instrument can’t produce traditional chords or scales — an unlikely choice for a rock band with such strong commercial potential. Collins and frontman Jack Underkofler are a factory of hooky riffs, even at their most detuned and menacing; and the latter barks and coos with a crystalline purity that recalls Jeff Buckley and Muse’s Matt Bellamy.

That contrast is crucial to the band’s debut LP, -!-   out March 12, 2021 via Spinefarm Records. Take the bruising belter “Been Here Before,” which pairs a stadium-sized chorus with angular guitars and Dylan Brenner’s blown-out fuzz bass; “I Never Loved Myself Like I Loved You” opens with the fidelity of an iPhone demo before blooming into a cinematic dream-pop singalong anchored by Will Goodroad’s rim-click drum groove. Brenner is a new addition to the lineup, but his experience as the band’s touring stand-in for the duration of their career has made him a natural fit.

It’s no surprise that Dead Poet Society like screwing with rock conventions — that’s been their aim since forming in 2013 as students at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Hilariously, at least in retrospect, it did take them a bit to find common ground.

“My best friend drummed for them, and I convinced him to leave the band,” Underkofler says with a laugh. “Six months later, Jack asked me to sing on a couple songs they’d written. My apprehension came from the fact that they were kind of a meme for being one of the worst bands at school. I kind of tried to push away — our old bassist just kept asking me, ‘Do you want to write with us?’ One day he showed up on my door step and I was like, ‘Fuck.’ After I wrote my first song with them [“145″], I was like, ‘I think there’s something here.'”

The newly solidified quartet quickly developed a chemistry: Underkofler and Collins had a mutual love of Coldplay, but their tastes sprawled over time along with drummer Will Goodroad: heavy acts like Royal Blood and Led Zeppelin, modern art-pop artists like St. Vincent, even hip-hop experimentalists like Tyler, the Creator. Not all of those influences are detectable on the largely self-produced -!-, which features a handful of tracks co-helmed by studio veteran Alex Newport. But that eclecticism makes sense, given their distaste for most modern rock.

“It’s just lame,” Collins says. “It has been for like 10 years. I think that’s because people are paying too much umbrage to classic rock — there’s this ‘passing of the torch’ thing that I think is just bullshit. Heavy music is the way we communicate — it happens to be rock music, but the expression itself and what we’re trying to say and how we want to make people feel is unique. That’s what bands used to do, and I think that’s what a lot of hip-hop artists do nowadays.”

“Our goal,” he emphasizes, “is to make someone feel something they haven’t felt before.”

INTERVIEW and SHOW REVIEW: HIGHLY SUSPECT

It was nine o’ clock on a Sunday in Indianapolis at the Hi-Fi club, and as the night progressed, the Hi-Fi grew more and more crowded to the point that you couldn’t move without bumping into someone. As talented as the two opening bands were, if you listened to the audience you could hear them say, “I can’t wait til Highly Suspect comes out!” The club was packed with locals and travelers who made their way to the Circle City just to see the rock band from Cape Cod. Highly Suspect have made a name for themselves over the past six years since they formed. They are the band that makes for a great VH1 documentary, two brothers and their best friend – three guys who just loved playing music and formed a band. That band would eventually have their single “Lydia” featured on MTV and sit at number four on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Songs chart and at number 37 on the U.S. Alternative Songs Chart.

The audience erupted in applause as Highly Suspect made their way on stage. Singer/guitarist Johnny Stevens slowly began to play his guitar, building up the suspense to “Bath Salts.” There was an immediate understanding to first time listeners as to why everyone was so eager to hear this band. It wasn’t just what they played but how they played it. Full of energy, it was hard to pin-point influences, as this is a band that is one hundred percent its own.

Next up was “Lost.” This song gave you the urge to dance. At the very least, feet were tapping. “23” was next, a clever song that featured Sasha Dobson on the album. “Blood Feather” was an excellent love song. The title track of their first album, “Mister Asylum” was up next, followed by the sensual, “Fuck Me Up.” Bass player Rich Meyer took the lead for singing the Bluesy tune, “Mom”. Johnny took back the mike for “Vanity.” The hit single, “Lydia” was second to last. The show was ended with an upbeat tune called “Claudeland.” Johnny Stevens told the audience to dance and they did. The whole club was shaking to the lyrics, “dance mother fucker dance the night away.” It was the perfect song to end with. It was full of energy, a great guitar solo, and had you leaving with a smile. Johnny told the audience that the band wanted to meet them all.

Highly Suspect proved at this concert that they had all the qualities of a great band. They write great songs, have a great stage presence, and interact superbly with their audience. There are only three members but this little band has a huge sound. Johnny, Rich, and Ryan are at the top of their craft and are an example that real rock and roll isn’t going anywhere.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to do this interview. Where did you guys get your start?

Johnny: Well, we got our start in a basement. We were playing together. They’re twin brothers and I’m one of their best friends since high school. We met at a party, Rich and I. He was riding a motor cycle and I was riding a motor cycle, and we both had acoustic guitars on our backs. And I thought, “who’s this guy stealing my style?” I kicked the tires a little and said hello. We started playing, got a house together, just because we were good friends with similar interests and started doing the basement stuff and had people over and they thought we were decent to listen to, so we just took it to bars. That was in Cape Cod Massachusetts. We got our very first bar shows were we would open for other local acts for fifteen to twenty minutes. Eventually it became half an hour and eventually we would have a whole bar show where we would play three hours a night – just doing cover songs. Then we started writing.

You started in Brooklyn, right, though you’re from Massachusetts?

Johnny: We got our real start in Brooklyn, once we moved there four years ago. That was when we started making waves, so to speak.

When was that first moment when you realized you would be doing this for a living?

Johnny: I don’t know if there was a definitive moment. We kind of just started playing and realized this was becoming everything. We kept doing it more than regular work and kind of slowly transitioned into being able to sustain ourselves through music alone. I guess that was probably in the last three years. We decided, “hey, you know this is it! We can do this!”

Rich: It happened like that, when we were doing covers and we were playing bars in Cape Cod. We all eventually quit our jobs and that was all we did. Then we went to New York and continued doing it. At one point we couldn’t make ends meet, so we all just stopped and got jobs. Then it happened again, and started playing music for a living. It was pretty awesome!

Does it feel like there’s a difference playing the big venues then the bars you started in?

Johnny: Yea. They all have their own pros and cons.

Rich: It’s kind of cool to play in both. The big venues have a lot of people, huge sound systems, and green rooms. They’re awesome. There are a lot of pros to it but there’s also a little disconnect, because the crowd is behind a barrier and they are six feet from the stage. When we play small rooms they are right on top of you. You could be swimming in people and its supper connected and intimate.

What bands were you influenced by?

Johnny: Every type of music you can think of! We listened to everything from Hip Hop to Reggae to Electronic to Rock to Jazz to Classical – just music in general. We try to take the best parts of things that we like and incorporate it into what we’re doing.

INDIE BAND OF THE WEEK – JUNKSTARS

What was it like to work with Joel Hamilton?

Johnny: Joel is a, I don’t know! It would be really hard to work with anyone else because the guy comes from Cape Cod, just like we do. So, there’s like a certain lingo/language we share. It makes him really easy to work and communicate with. Plus, he knows when we’re writing songs, he’s not a song writer but he knows how to say, “You know what? Maybe we should take apart that song. Move that drum beat there. That would make more sense,” and “Nice chords, but why don’t you phrase them differently instead of playing them open and hard on the seventh, it’s going to resonate better.” He is a genius with sound. Bose hires him to test their products. That’s no joke! It’s a dream and always a dream working with Joel. He’s an awesome person.

Rich: He’s also hilarious. So if there was tension he would just crack a joke and we would all be laughing. It’s huge because there is always tension. It’s part of it.

You guys have been touring with some pretty big groups. How’s that been?

Johnny: Dope! Several times before we went out on tour (I speak for myself) I would question whether or not it would be the right fit. You’re always nervous and you wonder, “will they dig us?” or you wonder if it’s a good look or if it’s a good thing to do. Every single time you go on tour with any band, it’s always a good idea. No matter who’s in front of you. You pick up new fans; you learn from seasoned pros, you learn from what they do, you get new markets behind you. Running with the big dogs is invaluable. It’s always a good experience.

What’s next for Highly Suspect?

Johnny: We’re going on tour with The Struts . I can’t tell you the next tour because it’s not confirmed yet but it’s pretty cool. We’re going to keep playing this album live for the next eighteen months until album two. We just put the album out, so we’re going to support this one, try to keep writing songs. This winter we’re going to Europe for the Carnival of Madness with Shinedown , Halestorm, and Black Stone Cherry. That’s going to be amazing. Next summer we will be doing a lot of the festivals. This wasn’t a big festival year for us. We were getting geared up for the release. Next year if the album’s doing well, we’re going to be hitting a lot of festivals around the world.

Thanks for taking the time to do the interview.
