Hutridurga Trek | The Experience

Hutridurga Betta

“Hutridurga Hill Station”, were the words written on an arch that welcomed us as left the main road that led to the village of Santhepete. As the dust cleared, we could make out the silhouette of a hill in the distance. This was the Hutridurga Betta, the hill that was a mute witness to the surge of history in the region. The rocky hill hid within its fold a thousand stories, tales from the pre-historic era, tales from the times of Krishnadevaraya and Kempegowda, and tales from the times of Tipu Sultan and the British.

A narrow road meanders to the foot of the hill. The drive to Hutridurga gives you an immersive experience of rural Karnataka. You pass tableaux of typical Indian rural life, a cowherd shooing his buffaloes to pasture, small village shops, temples to village goddesses.

A road is now being built to the middle of the hill. Roadwork is in progress. You can drive almost to the start of the Hutridurga Fort trek. You reach a small village, one of the many that nestle in the shadow of the Uttari Betta. The small village lies directly at the foot of the Hutridurga Fort. The village is known simply as Aalada Mara (Banyan Tree) and has a cluster of houses, temple to the local Goddess – Maramma and Adi Narayana Temple. There is a provision store just before the starting point of the trek.  One can buy Coffee, Tea, Biscuits etc. at the shop.

Hutridurga

There is a small space that has been cleared and is designated for Parking, this is where one needs to park their bikes and cars.

Hutridurga

We alight from our vehicle and pass the temple to reach the starting point of the Hutridurga Trek. A temporary stall selling drinking water, soft drinks, and buttermilk greet visitors. The shop is run by a school teacher.

Hutridurga Trek | The Trek Begins

Uttari Betta Trek Starting Point

A series of steps cut in the rock leads to a small stone entrance lying between the ruined walls of a fort. This is where the trek up the Hutridurga fort begins. The entrance is one of a series of 7 entrances at different levels that lead to the top of the fort. Today only 6 of these entrances can be found.

Hutridurga Trek

In a bid to develop the place as a tourist attraction and to make the ancient Shiva temple at the top accessible to all, steps are being made in the rock face with safety railings. So part of the trek now involves climbing these steps while part of the trek is through a rocky path.

Hutridurga Fort Trek

We take the steps and climb. As you climb higher and higher, the views become more and more stunning. You can tiny villages, green fields, and small rocky outcrops glistening in the sun.

Hutridurga Trek

You keep passing one fort entrance after another, some of the entrances still retain a part of their original form and make for excellent and shady places to relax and catch your breath.

Hutridurga Trek Review

You pass the ruins of various stone structures as you make your way to the top. For the most part, the terrain is rocky and barren.

Hutridurga Trek Review

But it has surprisingly green patches with rich vegetation as you near the top. In fact, there are patches that are veritable grasslands.

Hutridurga Trek Review

You walk through grass that tower above you. The grass is brown and covers the trekking path in portions. It may be mentioned that the climb is not steep and is gradual for most of the Hutridurga trek.

Hutridurga Trek | The Summit

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

A flight of steep rock steps leads to the top of the Hutri Betta (Hill) where stands the ancient Shiva temple called Shankareshwara Temple.

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

The steps are strewn with loose rock and are a bit steep, apparently work is in progress, so we carefully negotiate the steps and reach the temple. By the side of the temple and adjacent to the temple walls is a rectangular mandapa or portico with a roof supported by plain rock columns.

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

The sun is beating down harshly by the time we reach the top and the shade of the mandapa is welcoming. This is where we take a bite from our packed lunch, and make sure we collect all the trash and take it back for proper disposal. As we munch our lunch we look at the small rectangular hole in the rock by the side of the temple. It is filled with water and glistens like an emerald as the rays of the sun reflect off it.

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

This is a perennial water source, a spring with an unknown source that never dries up, the spring called Dodda Donne has many a myth associated with it.

View from Hutridurga

We spend some time admiring the spectacular views from the temple. The entire world stretches below our feet, or so it seems. A sense of calm pervades our being and the tiredness of the climb magically vanishes and we get up recharged and rejuvenated.

Uttari Betta Trek

A little walk towards the side of the summit takes you to a relatively flatter surface on the edge of the hill. The vegetation is here is a medley of colours. Rich green shades merge with golden brown against the dull grey canvas of the rocks, the blue of the sky provides the perfect contrast.

Uttari Betta Trek

Some rocks are balanced precariously on each other and make for a dramatic landscape. This is the place that is referred to as Hutridurga sunrise point or Hutrdiurga viewpoint. In the distance can be seen the peaks of the Savandurga hills.

Hutridurga Fort Trek

Time seems to stand still as we gaze out at the distant Savandurga hills, the green fields stretching far below, the white clouds flitting across the blue sky, and the wild cacti and other vegetation triumphantly surviving in the crevices and crannies of rocks.

Hutri Durga Trek

It felt great to be just alive. But time moves on inexorably and we had to break the magical spell that the seclusion of Hutridurga had cast on us.

It was time to literally descend back to earth.

Such a detailed post you have written. I have done trekking only as a kid not since last 10-15years.

Such a stunning trek place. I have never done any trekking in my life coz not much physical strength. However, atleast I would like to visit this place.

Hutri Durga trek seems absolutely amazing. We haven’t been to this part of India yet and know very little about it. Your comprehensive guide will come in handy when we will visit these places. Another gem worth a bookmark.

Such a beautiful place close to Bangalore that I didn’t know about and never even heard of it. Will suggest it to my family who lives there.

The views are so breathtaking. Besides Bangalore has such good weather. This looks like something I will add to my bucket list should I come that side of the country.

I loved the pictures, well clicked. I am planning a trek soon, I’ll look for Hutridurga.

I have been to this place and I agree it’s absolutely stunning. I love the fort above and it’s a pretty awesome day trek from Bangalore.

Wow, this is an amazing post with stunning pictures. Though trekking is difficult for me due to my asthma, I’m going to share this post to my brother who loves trekking.

Wow! Such a beautiful spot. I have been to Bangalore a few times but, next time, I need to venture out of the city to see spots like this!

So it seems you had really great time tracking here… the pictures says it all … surely in my list

What a beautiful travelogue. India is truly incredible with so many places to see. This trek is so exciting

This seems to be a lovely trekking destination. I will surely recommend my friends in Bangalore.

My kids and my husband loves trekking alot. And on the same end I m not a great lover for trekking. I m pretty sure when I will show up this blog to them they will definitely want to go and explore places. Thanks for recommendation 🙂

As someone who used to go on treks in Korea, I would love to do the Hutridurga trek someday. Your post has inspired me to start exploring new treks around my region as well, so thank you for that!

Wow this trek looks wonderful and the images that you have shared talk volumes about the beauty of this place.

This looks like such a beautiful trek! I bet it’s amazing to camp up top and watch the sunrise in the morning. Will need to add this to my India bucket list if I ever get there.

Hutridurga Trek sounds like a perfect day trip to escape the confines of the city. How nice that it’s only about an hour away from the hustle and bustle. I didn’t imagine that there would be road works there, as well as a tiny little village. The temple at the ‘top of the world’ would make the hike worth it. I’m really intrigued with the hole that’s fed by a natural spring. That’s cool.

That’s a beautiful read of your experience.

The views from atop are beautiful. I love areas that are still relatively knew and sort of a hidden gem. It looks like they are gearing up for tourism and making the hike more accessible. The stairs they created blend in well with the landscape 🙂

Uttari Betta (Hutridurga) - Night Trek

A “Sunrise Trek” sounds exciting, and it sure is! You trek at night, camp at the peak and wake up to a beautiful sunrise. Uttari Betta is one such option close to Bangalore. We opted for a trek organised by BMC, during the good monsoon months and it was a great experience by all measures.

Uttari Betta, also called Hutridurga, is one of the Navadurgas, the nine fortified hills around Bangalore. The ruins are still visible all along the way. Being fairly easy and short, it is a great place for a quick getaway for people of all ages.

Trek difficulty: Easy

Duration and Time of Visit

1 night August mid

To and From

  • At that hour, the bus journey passed like a breeze, especially once we were out of the city area

  • This was the first time I was trekking at night. Since you can not see anything, you need to be extra vigilant, strictly walk in a queue and definitely follow the instructions
  • The hill is actually a rock, with vegetation all over it and the trek route is ~3km long, the terrain being easy
  • Besides our backpacks, we were also carrying a sleeping bag each, since the plan was to sleep at the peak till sunrise
  • Without much difficulty, and without being able to see any of the natural beauty around us, we reached the top in about 1.5 hours, packed ourselves into the sleeping bags and dozed off
  • The peak had a lot of vegetation, small entrapments of water and obviously, a lot of boulders; and a vast stretch of green all around
  • It was extremely calm - we sat silently for a long time. It was extremely inviting - we walked around for a long time
  • While the terrain is all rock, it has thick intermittent patches of green
  • There is a temple of Lord Shiva on the way, and ruins of a fort built by Kempegowda in the 16th century
  • There comes a spot where we had only small steps cut into the boulder. While it was actually not that difficult, but I am not sure how we had crossed it the previous night - ignorance is bliss!
  • It took us about 45 minutes to descend, stopping every once in a while to click pictures
  • Finally we reached the bottom and saw in full, the hill that we had spent the night on
  • We boarded the bus, stopped in between for a quick breakfast and reached Bangalore by 11am, bringing the short and sweet trip to a close

Major Expenses

  • BMC trek cost: Rs. 1,300

Tips and Resources

  • If you do the night trek, definitely be extra careful and carry a good flashlight. Also, I think you should do the night trek only with an organised group
  • It can be windy at the top, hence it’s advisable to carry an extra layer of clothing for the night
  • It’s best to wear a cap, apply sunscreen and carry sufficient water for the morning trek
  • You should carry the camping essentials (toiletries, first aid)

Huthridurga Fort Trek – Treasure hunt on the hill

Bangalore is surrounded by a number of hills and hillocks – all waiting to be explored. One such relatively unknown hill near Magadi is Huthridurga.  Bangalore weather was cloudy for the whole week which tempted me to grab the key and go on a long ride. I opened my yet to explore  list of places and zeroed down to Hutridurga fort which looked interesting. My friend Vinay had visited it recently so he gave some inspiration to visit it. I called my friends to check if they can join. 5 of my friends joined the ride. Since all my friends were from the different part of the city we decided Sunkadakatte as the meetup point.  One of the friends had to stay in the office till 12 in the night. He insisted we start the trip a little late so that he can get proper sleep. Since the weather was pleasant throughout the day we decided to leave at 8 am. Brief about the place:   Hutridurga is Ruined fortification are still visible on the two hillocks surrounding the village.  It’s one among the Nine Durgas around Bangalore (Nava Durgas). It has a small temple dedicated to Shiva and Nandi.  It was built by Kempegowda in the 16th century. Ruined fortifications are still visible on the two hillocks surrounding the village. Saturday morning: Bhimu and I got ready by 8 am, others were still getting ready so I asked them to have breakfast on the way itself. Bhimu and I had breakfast at by2cafe near my home and we headed to the Meetup point. Everyone came to the Meetup point at 9.30 am. After a warm greeting, we started the ride.

The Ride: There was a little bit of traffic on the Magadi road, this is the reason I prefer to start early in morning to avoid traffic. The climate was cloudy and pleasant which made us crave for the hot cup of tea. We pulled over after a few kilometers for the tea break.  The destination was around 50 km which is a piece of cake to cover so we didn’t hurry much.

It started drizzling in the middle but luckily the rain wasn’t heavy. We took a couple of more stops to click some beautiful pics which cost us a lot of time but we didn’t bother much as we had the whole day free for the trip. Also, the weather was pleasant throughout the day so it didn’t matter much at what time you start trekking.

We crossed Magadi and reached a small village, Vinay had told about a small restaurant which serves great food. The time was 12.30 so we thought of having lunch and then trek. We stopped at a hotel called Veerashaiva Palahara Mandira (click for maps link), it’s a very small hotel (you can’t expect much from villages) but the food was really tasty. We took puri, Ragi balls, and rice bath out of which Puri was really bad and rest were lip smacking. It was 1.30 by the time we finished lunch followed by another cup of tea. The destination was another 9 kilometers. I strictly said, everyone, that we are not going to stop till we reach the destination.

hutridurga trek map

I started navigation to the destination, Vinay had told me the point on the maps leads to the village not the base of the hill. I followed the instructions as guided by him and took the right turn near at an arch which said welcome to Huthridurga fort. We started ascending, soon the view of the surroundings was good. After a couple of twists and turns, we reached a small village. There was a minibus parked so I guessed some group would have come. There was a signboard which read “Way to Shankarlingeshwara temple” in Kannada. Left from it leads to the base of the hill.

Trekking: It was 2 pm by the time we started trekking. Usually, it’s not recommended start trekking in the afternoon but the weather was pleasant throughout the day so it really didn’t matter. There were few ppl already descending, I  talked with them and got know that they were from BMC group and they were around 40 in number. The trek was going good, the best part about this trail is after every fort wall you cross you have to find the entry to the next fort wall. It felt like a Treasure hunt at sometimes when the doors weren’t visible clearly.  The trail to the top goes through 7 archways/doors (Dwaraka). The trail is mostly rocky – going over boulders and steps carved into huge rocks.

The green vegetation followed us throughout the trek. The climb is very easy but sometimes finding the trail was difficult as the shrubs covered the route. Otherwise, the trek is very simple. After a good trek of about an hour, we reached the temple. Unfortunately, the temple was closed and there were no locals around to inquire about the place. I thought this was the end of the trail, so we sat down to chill out and enjoy the beautiful panoramic view.

Trek abhi baki hai mere dost: There was another group of around 10 people, after talking to them I got to know we can go further and explore the summit.  We walked past the temple to the other side of the hill. I could see another big hill adjacent to the hill. The trail was clearly visible. The route was little narrow at the beginning but the entire stretch was amazing.

After another 15 minutes of the mild trek, we reached the peak of the hill. We sat there for a while enjoying the view while eating the snacks we got it from the base. The time was around 5 pm. I wanted to ride back through Savandurga state forest but it would be dark by the time we would start back so we thought of going back on the same route as we came.

Descend: After enjoying the view and splendid time we started trekking down. The route was confusing while descending but somehow we managed to find the way down. We reached the base of the hill at 5.30 pm.

Riding Back: I was happy to see our bikes safe and sound. We started riding back without wasting much time. It started drizzling and the climate was colder than ever. We pulled over for snacks and tea. I can’t find words to explain how it felt to have hot Bajji and tea in a climate like this.

It became dark by the time we resumed our ride. The single-lane road with lots of potholes was a difficult task, especially in the night. We reached Bangalore at 8.30 pm.  Conclusion: Hutridurga is definitely one of the most underrated offbeat places you must visit. The trek is easy yet the scenery is very good. You can cover it in half a day.

Important Notes: 1. You can have breakfast/lunch at  Veerashaiva Palahara Mandira  hotel. 2. Put navigation to  Huthri Betta Hike Starting Point not just Huthridurga. (click on the link) 3.  There is good parking space available if you want to park your car. If you are on the bike then you can ride till the trek starting point but the road gets very narrow and its a tough terrain.  4. The Pooja to the deity is done only on Mondays and Fridays

I have done the vlog of the trip. You can watch it here. Do subscribe and like to show your love.

Hutridurga - A Trail to Remember

Updated: Jun 22, 2022

hutridurga trek map

Hutridurga is a small hillock situated about 65 km from Bangalore in Kunigal taluk. It is 3,600 meters above sea level with plantations and forest reserve surrounding the area. One can even witness the village fair or village market day on a Sunday. A deviation from the Kunigal highway towards Santhepete will give you the glimpse of Hutridurga whose silhouette is breathtaking. It is a hill with rich history playing a prominent role during the British Raj and even before. The fort starts mid way from the hill and tarmac roads help in getting to the base of the fort much faster. There are handful of houses at the base and a provisional store. It is better to carry food, water, refreshments before reaching the spot.

hutridurga trek map

raving A few years ago we had a mud road leading to the boulders where the fifth layer of the fort starts. Now there are stones which are laid to navigate much easily. There are 7 layers to the fort where two have been destroyed and only the ruins remain where as the other 5 stand majestically braving the seasons. The trail is about 2.5 kms with stone stairs and railings covering almost half the way of the trek. This trail end on the top of the hill leading to an old Shiva temple, where people visit and paying homage to their deity.

hutridurga trek map

There is small pond in front of the temple. It is believed to be consecrated in the 16th century and later a temple was built around the area. The visitors can have a mesmerizing view of Kunigal taluk and tiny surrounding villages. Many of the trekkers end their quest here but if you want to push yourself a bit more then Hutridurga has much more to offer. If one will continue the trail even beyond the temple on a mud path eventually leading to boulders, we come across a less traversed path. Descending a boulder will lead into a stairway which goes further down and then to a flat area with mud and grass. Not many are aware of this. If we continue to trek another 700 meters two humongous boulders stand tall. One boulder gives the view of the other side of Kunigal and the other boulder holds a secret door way to less accessed side of Hutri. We can experience a sort of cave exploration at Hutridurga. The opening of the cave is small and one has to squeeze through and push themselves vertically up, leaning against the rocks, navigating through the dark to see the light of the day. This makes Hutridurga more dearer to many. This last part of the small cave exploration adds more thrill and lives up to the spirit of true adventure. Once we make it out the cave then we can stretch our legs out and soak up every ounce of energy that is available. It is indeed a sight to behold, which remains in the trekkers memory for a very long time.

Difficulty level of the trek - Moderate.

Ways to reach:

Google map - https://goo.gl/maps/fK23jxfd5ADjGJXw9

Hutridurga is easily accessible via road. Mangalore Kunigal highway has the best tarmac and makes it a pleasure drive. There are two ways to reach Hutridurga.

Bangalore -------- Kunigal highway (Left deviation) --------- Hutridurga

Bangalore --------- Magadi Road ------------ Hutridurga

Things to carry:

Water bottle

Sunscreen lotion

Few cookies, chocolates or citric fruits.

Instant pain relieve spray (to be on the safer end)

For complete list of essentials you can read our blog

https://www.teamparikrama.com/post/backpacking-essentials

Facilities available at Hutridurga:

Hotels - There are no hotels in the vicinity and hence better to finish breakfast along the highway and pack lite lunch.

Toilets - We do not have the public toilet facility. But when requested to the locals they let trekkers use their washroom.

Parking - At the base there is paid parking facility. They charge approx. Rs. 50/-

Best time to visit -

The hill is accessible throughout the year and no restrictions are imposed. But the best time to visit is June to October. There are greener pastures and pleasant weather. Summers can be harsh and rainy season makes the boulders slippery and caution is advised.

Adios trekker!

Until next adventure...

Hutridurga Trek – An Escape to the Mountains

Putting the fire out, he signals all of us to start making our way towards the bus. It was 6 pm and it was time to head back to Bangalore. After spending too much time locked up in my room doing a 9-5 job, I was in desperate need of a short break. Breaking my head trying to find places to trek near Bangalore, I accidentally discovered a spot about 65 km West of Bangalore. A backpacker’s group on Facebook arranges a trek to Hutridurga every weekend.

I got my name registered for the weekend, paid for the trip and now here we are sharing stories from our best treks with fellow travelers when our new friend aka our tour guide tells us “there is nothing we haven’t seen in this jungle all these years”. As we wait for him to share his spooky stories with us, he signals us to start packing and move.

Hutridurga – the safe haven

As described by our tour guide Brijesh, Hutridurga is one of the nine hillforts built around Bangalore back in the 16th Century. One of the closest getaways for folks in Bangalore or near  Tumkur, Hutridurga will delightfully assault all your senses. This is a safe haven for those looking to getaway for a few hours to break the monotony the pandemic has assured us all with.

Just a short drive from Bangalore, this place let’s you peace out with no touristy crowd to disturb your vibe. Isolated from the rest of Karantaka, the air here is crisp and nature is at its purest form. Drink in the stunning views, fill your lungs with fresh air, prance around and get those legs moving. A change of scenary at a time like this does wonders to your mind and body.

Book a safe, sanitized cab with a reliable car rental company and enjoy a day out with friends and family.

En route Hutridurga

My trip to Hutridurga started at 6 in the morning from Silk Board. We stopped briefly for breakfast and then continued on our journey without any halts.

savaari-hutridurga-trek-the-route-followed

It took us an hour and a half to cover 65 km by road. The time was 7:45 am. Excited. Thrilled. I am beaming with happiness to be finally out in the open. Brijesh gives us exactly 10 minutes to freshen up before we start the trek.

I look around, the jungle is unsually silent. I grab my backpack from the boot of the traveler van and hang it around my shoulders. The silence here is deafening. There is not a bird in sight, not a sound of a leaf falling nor an animal to be seen around. The sky is clear and the air here feels heavy.

savaari-hutridurga-trek-dusk-at-forests

We start the trek with Brijesh leading us. He tells us “forests are the most welcoming places on earth if you treat them well”. Clinging to our water bottles and broken tree branches, the hike gets interesting with each new turn and climb.

From encountering a leopard to skinny dipping in the ice cold waters of Uttarakhand; the fascinating tales of travelers kept me going. And in no time, we reached the peak of the mountain. Perched on a hilltop is a temple and around it is a view so magnificient.

savaari-hutridurga-trek-temple-view

Brijesh left us here to with a clear warning to meet him at 6 pm. He adds “staying here after 6 is something you want to avoid”. Brijesh sounds like the shamans of villages. Well, i dont blame him either. After all, he is a child of nature.

We spend the rest of the day roasting chicken, talking endlessly about our pandemic affected travel plans, sharing more spooky stories, and taking a zillion pictures. We see the sun setting beautifully, painting the landscape around in hues of orange, yellow and a little bit of purple. We hear the sound of birds returning to their nests. The chirping gets louder and I hear the calls of the flying squirrels. The air is getting colder, the rustling of leaves merges with other miscellaneous sounds of the forest and we start hearing footsteps everywhere.

We call it a day and follow Brijesh who wants us to board the tempo traveller before it gets pitch dark. My eyes are getting heavy from all the trekking, but I am happy to have finally done this. I am taking back way too many spooky stories from this trip which are surely going to keep me up all night along with a little bit of disappointment for not having spotted a leopard 🙁

Uttari Betta Trek

Uttridurga, also recognized as Uttari Betta, is a fortified hill situated in the southeast region of Kunigal taluk, with an elevation of 3708 feet above sea level. Located 15 km southeast of Kunigal, the Taluk center, this hill fort boasts eight gateways spanning from the foot to the summit, along with numerous outer gates. At the summit, known as Sankarakumbhi, there is a small Shankareshwara temple overlooking a spring called Dodda done or big spring.

Providing a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape adorned with numerous tanks and hills, Hutridurga offers a captivating experience. The nomenclature of Hutridurga is rooted in Hutri, a village positioned approximately 3 km from the hill's base. The village directly at the hill's foothold is recognized as Santhepet, while the one situated on the initial elevation is named Uttari Betta.

Hutridurga village is home to several temples dedicated to Adinarayana, Veerabhadra, Anjaneya, and other deities. Navadurga – Trek To The Nine Hill Forts From Bangalore

Sharing is caring!

Banglore is a mysterious city. It is a conundrum that is waiting to be explored. A garden City and home to India’s greatest tech empires. But perhaps most exciting of all its attributes is the proximity of the Western Ghats. This inspires adventurers and travelers to become frontiers and discover the different facets of the ‘nature gem’ that Banglore cherishes. This effect is much more pronounced on us and always fuels us to trek and witness wondrous sights. After all, it’s not the destination that drives us but the journey.

Navadurga – ‘Nava’ means nine and ‘Durga’ means fort. The forts are reminders of rich history and some are even thousands of years old. We feel that these monumental structures are quickly being forgotten in the annuals of history. So, in this blog let’s explore the nine hill forts (Navadurga) surrounding Bangalore, located within a radius of 100 Km.

Important Tips

  • As the hill forts are formed on the mountain rocks, it’s very difficult to climb in the scorching heat during midday. It is always wise to go early and as an added perk you get to enjoy the breathtaking golden sunrise.
  • Since Bangalore has a pleasant climate throughout the year, the best time to visit Navadurga is anytime except during the rainy season as the rocks might get slippery.
  • You won’t find any food vendors during the hike. So, carry enough water and energy bars.
  • There is no direct public transport to reach the base of the hills. So, hire a vehicle of your choice.

1. Nandidurga/ Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills-navadurga

Nandidurga is an ancient hill fortress in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka. During the Chola period, it was called “Anandagiri” meaning the Hill of Happiness. There is also a Nandi temple at the top of the hills. The fort was built by the Ganga dynasty, which was later enlarged and strengthened by Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan used to drop traitors and British sympathizers from a high point in the fortress called the Tippu Drop. Tipu Sultan’s summer palace is not open to the public but you can take a scenic stroll along the fortified wall.

Nandi Hills is one of the more fairly known places so is mostly crowded. The motorable road takes you to the top of Nandi Hills. But hiking from the Sultanpet village offers an enriching experience. The path is straightforward with well-laid steps. It is truly a feast to watch the beauty of the sun, rising leisurely above the floating clouds. It is also popular among cyclists and bikers.

Related: Complete guide to Nandi hills , all the 3 routes explained in detail.

Additionally, make sure to visit the 9th-century Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple located near the base of the Nandi Hills. This place is very peaceful and you can have some uninterrupted me-time.

2. Savanadurga

savanadurga-navadurga

Savandurga is a hill fort that is considered to be the largest monolith in Asia. ‘Savanadurga’ or ‘Savinadurga’ translates to the ‘Fort of Death’. It is formed by two hills locally known as Karigudda (Black Hill) and Billigudda (White Hill). The two temples at the foothills, Sri Srivandi Veerabhadraswamy temple, and Sri Lakshmi Narasimha temple are regularly visited by the locals.

There are no paved routes or steps. You have to follow the electric lines to reach the summit. Although the climb is steep, it is one of the highly recommended treks for passionate adventurers. You can find a few remains of the fort en route. Start early to watch the sunrise reflecting on the Arkavati River. The distant view of Nandi Hills is a pretty sight to be remembered. On your way back, you can stop at the Manchanabele dam to indulge in water sports.

  • Entry Ticket: Free
  • Trek-Difficulty Level: Hard
  • Distance from Bangalore: 48 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Kengeri – Manchanabele – Savandurga
  • Trek length: 4.5 Km in total
  • Altitude: 1226 m

For more information, read the detailed guide to Savanadurga .

3. Channarayanadurga

Channarayana Durga fort

Channarayanadurga is a hill fort in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. The fort was originally built by the lesser-known kings of Madhugiri. Many battles were fought for its possession and it changed hands several times between the Marathas and the Mysore Wodeyars. During the third Mysore war, the British took over the fort and then abandoned it.

This is one of the not-so-popular treks around Bangalore. The initial climb is steep and slippery until you reach the fort walls. You will find a reservoir, small temples, and old ruined structures inside the fort. However, for us, the splendorous view of the Madhugiri fort in the backdrop made the trek a rewarding experience.

  • Distance from Bangalore: 99 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Nelamangala – Dobbaspete – Koratagere – Channarayanadurga
  • Trek length: 1.43 Km, one way
  • Altitude: 1053 m

For full details, check the DIY hiking guide to Channarayana Durga

4. Huthridurga

huthridurga-navadurga

Hutridurga, also known as Uttari Betta, is a fortified hill in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. It was built in the 16th century by Kempe Gowda. Historically, the fort was the military bastion of Tipu Sultan against the British. It was later conquered by the British later in 1791.

The trek starts from Santhepet village and passes through the seven-tiered fort. The paved steps take you to the Shankar Eshwara temple. The trek does not end here, it continues through a cave, and an open grassland, and proceeds further to the rock structure at the top, from where you can witness a great sunrise reflecting on the lakefront.

  • Distance from Bangalore: 77 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Nelamangala – Solur – Huthridurga
  • Trek length: 4 Km in total
  • Altitude: 1130 m

Kabbaladurga is a ruined hill fort in the Bangalore rural district. In the 18th century, Hyder Ali captured the Kabbaladurga Fort from Murari Rao and kept him, prisoner, in the fort till his death. It is said that the convicts were thrown off the cliff as punishment.

The trek starts from the old Kotilingeshwara temple at the base. It is relatively easy and the initial path has steps carved out of rock. The markings on the rocks will guide you to reach the peak. The old and crumbling buildings on the top represent a prison, garrison, and storage godown. The Bheemalingeswara and Kabbalamma temples are popular among the surrounding villages.

For this trek, it is mandatory to book your entry tickets as it comes under the Makali Forest Reserve. As soon as you cross the railway track, a forest officer will approach you to verify the tickets. Walk a few meters to reach the open ground with the mountain view. The sight of the lake and the vast green fields from midway instills a new appreciation for nature. The trek path is marked along the way to the fort ruins. There is also a small abandoned Shiva temple at its peak.

7. Huliyurdurga

huliyurdurga-navadurga

In the native language Kanada, ‘Huliyurdurga’ translates to the ‘Fort of the Tiger.’ It is located in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. It is a solid rock of mass that appears to be an inverted cup. The fort is said to have been built by Kempe Gowda.

The trek to Huliyurdurga fort starts from the old temple. The route is a bit rough as it is more of a climb than a trek. Few markings can be found on the rocks. Although the fort is completely ruined now, the summit features one of the best views of Hemagiri and the town below.

  • Trek-Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate
  • Distance from Bangalore: 92 Km

8. Devarayanadurga/ DD Hills

DD hills or Devarayanadurga temple

Devarayanadurga is a temple town in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. Devarayanadurga translates to the ‘Fort of the God’ and true to its name, the hilltop is dotted with several temples. The fort was captured by Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar on one of his victorious campaigns.

DD Hills is well known among motorcycle enthusiasts for its hairpin curves. You can take a refreshing stop at the Devarayanadurga lake before proceeding to the hill. The road to the left takes you to the Yoga Narasimha temple from the prominent intersection where entry fees are collected. Go straight along the spiral road and ascend a few 100 steps to arrive at the Bhoga Narasimha temple at the top. The path beside the sacred pond leads you to the pinnacle but nowadays visitors aren’t allowed for unspecified reasons.

While the place is great for sightseeing, there is not much trekking to do. Opposite the regional food stall, there is a small open ground from where you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the place below. To hit the famous Instagrammable cliff, you need to go past the Yoga Narasimha temple and take a left. From there, you can capture stunning views encompassing the region.

You can also visit Namada Chilume which is nearby. It is a historical place that boasts its uniqueness as a place where the spring water never dries up.

9. Bhairavadurga

bhairavadurga-navadurga

The Bairava Fort was built by Kempe Gowda in the 17th century AD and was later captured by Tipu Sultan. The fort has two fortification walls and a temple atop dedicated to Bhairava, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva.

Bhairavadurga is one of the most difficult and harrowing treks among the Navadurga. This trek is not advised if you are not experienced. There are two routes to land up at the fortified hilltop. One, is through the shrubs and dense forest, while the other, is through a steep rocky ascend. Although there is not much to see at the top, the hike is an adventure in itself.

  • Trek-Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Distance from Bangalore: 63 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Nelamangala – Solur – Bhairavadurga
