Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is. Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practicing Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioral standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernization and globalization. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Festivals and events in India

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervor of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of colored powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolor Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colorful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and the beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejeweled females take the chance to let their hair down.

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travelers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. How will I be traveling around India?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in India, you may find yourself traveling by Jeep.

Safari through jungles and national parks aboard a jeep, which is ideal for conquering the difficult terrain and offers supreme wildlife viewing opportunities.

Cruising the waterways of India is a revealing, inspiring experience. Whether it’s the iconic Ganges or peaceful Kerala backwaters, seeing India from the water is a must.

Traveling by train is one of the great experiences of India. It's a system which looks like chaos, but it works - and well.

Use the efficient metro to get around the sights and suburbs of Delhi.

Zip around the big cities of India by auto rickshaw.

What kind of accommodation will I be staying in?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in India you may find yourself staying in a homestay.

Make new friends, feast on authentic home cooking and receive kind hospitality while staying with friendly families in India.

With walks, wildlife spotting and adventure sports nearby, staying in a jungle resort is the perfect way to see another side of India.

From ex-royal palaces to historic hill stations and converted forts, India is full of heritage properties that have been turned into comfortable accommodation with an old-world touch.

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Positive Change for Marine Life nurtures ocean health with community-led conservation initiatives. Donations help them expand and implement vital programs in India that empower local communities, support sustainable fishing practices, restore marine habitats and drive policy change. I am planning to go on a European tour next year for a summer vacation along with my family.. Kindly suggest in choosing the right tour operator from Mumbai as I am confused in identifying the right one with full value for my money..

Go with any operator, but never go with Koala, Chandigarh

Let me know about your international tour operations

You can check vayu seva which is in Kolkata .we did our Dubai trip with them and it was a very well organised trip .Now we are going to east Europe with them in june 2019 . You can contact them.

Hi Mr. Karthik. Thank you, for this article. I will appreciate if you can give me an idea for the international tour operators for senior citizens. They will be traveling all by themselves and with a knee problem. They live in a small town Asansol, WB. So agencies from Kolkata will be helpful for them. Thank you, very much for your time!

I don’t have experience with them Sobhan. If you want me to check with folks in Mumbai I can.

Hair Mani Karthik,I am SOBHAN from Kochi, Kerala.I am planning an abroad family tour with my friend on April this year to Singapore… Malaysia…. Langkawi.I am searching for a balanced package for 8 or 9 days. Can I know how is this tour operator DESIRE HOLIDAYS PVT LTD MUMBAI.If you know please give me your valuable suggestions.Thanks….

Do you have a recommendation Lalita?

I would say, its a high time we should give a chance to emerging Tour Operators. Since they are new in this market, they need to make their name in the market and hence they would surely ensure that even the teeny weeny requests and demands of the clients are met.

Happy Traveling!

Is that the only way you know to find out what is good and not? This is not a certification, but a suggested list.

Did you travelled with all of them? How can your certify that they are best travel company? May be misguiding …

It.s a Marathi establishment and anyone out side it will be like fish out of water.I had this experience and believe me I felt like an untouchable.Horrible . The language of conversation is also Marathi.

Hai Mani we plan for a short trip to europe limited countries which is the best tour operator and we are frombangalore

I am totally unhappy with Thomas Cook, on trip to Andamans they put me in terrible hotel at port Blair , a room with just a bed ( called it 3 star), did not give time for lunch on one segment, being diabetic that became a serious concern

Did not take us to many tourist attractions though was mentioned in their list, Claimed these were COMPLEMENTARY AND HENCE WE SHOULD COVER IT ON OUT OWN. This was mentioned in the offer letter. Did not give the iteneary till the last .

In short package was grossly mis- sold. Did not expect that from a number one tour operater. Could not even connect to them on phone after the money was paid.

We had a great time in India. The tour manager Mr. Amit was very responsive to all my questions and issues prior to the trip and was waiting for us to greet us at the first hotel. Our driver Mr. Vikram was great too. He was very professional and was always on time waiting for us each day. We absolutely loved our local guide in Jaipur. He was so professional, knowledgeable and quick that we felt we were very well taken care of. Now here’s the reason I can’t give 5 stars to this tour. It was the hotel in Jaipur and the local guide in Delhi. The hotel was not up to the standard of 3 stars at all. The bathroom was disgusting, moldy and gross. They called us around 10pm asking us to order room service both nights we stayed. It was the most horrible service that I have ever experienced at any hotels around the world. Now the local guide in Delhi, he made us decide to say goodbye after 3 hours. We never had a problem tipping people at all until the rickshaw ride (which was included in the tour). It was such a turn off moment for us when the guide asked us to tip them 200 for a 200 ride. He was also on the personal phone calls a lot, which made us feel that he really didn’t want to be there at all for us. We had to call it a day.

Indian Getaway

The tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and accommodating. Some of the elements felt like a school trip but that’s maybe because I have travelled alone before and am not used to doing everything en mass. Javed was fantastic and no request was too small. I would recommend the tour and also Javed as a guide.

India\'s Golden Triangle Tour

India's Golden Triangle

Whilst I had an amazing time during my Golden Triangle Tour, I feel that travellers should be better prepared for the awful sights/smells and sounds that they will encounter in Delhi. I have done charity work in Uganda, Thailand and Cambodia and I thought I was prepared for Delhi, but nothing could have prepared me for the awful deprivation I encountered. That being said, I am glad that I did experience the 'real' Delhi and I also got to see some amazing sights in Jaipur and Agra. I would also like to give 5 stars to our guide, Ajay. He was fantastic. Nothing was too much for him. He was approachable, good humoured and great company throughout.

This was a great tour! A wonderful way to dip your toes in India. My driver, Ranveer, was excellent! Every guide in each city was wonderful! I especially liked my guide for Agora. At the Taj Majal, he guided me through the crowds and took awesome pictures of me. He sat me down in a lovely area and told me the story of the Taj Majal. It was magical!

Essential India Tour

Essential India

This trip was amazing. Our guide, Jai, was the greatest and really made the whole trip for me. He showed us the best places to eat. Each place had different specialties and famous dishes. I think I tried (and thoroughly enjoyed) at least 20 different Indian dishes throughout the trip. This tour has the crazy, chaos of the cities but also a great balance with the calm and peaceful nature of the small villages. Honestly, the village time was up with some of my favorite memories which I wouldn't have expected when reading the itinerary. Really recommend this tour if you are looking to tour the north of India!

The tour is good! Really nice guides and driver. Nothing to say about the car except that it’s a really good one! Very comfy with AC that works perfectly good. Do not forget that a lot of fees are not included in the package. The hotels are good, some hygienic issues sometimes tho.

I enjoyed the whole trip. I particularly enjoyed Bikaner, Jaiselmar, and Udiapur, our driver Kan Singh was an amazing skilled driver, I can tend to car sickness and I was worried this might be an issue but he was so steady and safe I had no issues. The hotels were mainly good although the first one there Rocklands was really noisy and no hot water. The camel ride was good but the desert adventure camp had very loud Bollywood music into the night. In summary I would recommend this to but particularly our driver Kan Singh

PROS : OUR DRIVER SUSHIL !!! This trip was an amazing overview of the North Indian experience. Our driver Sushil was a blessing for us throughout the trip! He was very professional, adaptable and constantly ensuring that we are enjoying ourselves. He was also very adaptable whenever we wanted to slightly steer away from the schedule. I will be recommending him to all my friends and family who are thinking about going on this trip. The guides were also very knowledgeable. CON: The stay at Jaipur was a convenient hotel as it was close to the monuments but the smell from the nearby sewage was unbearable. We moved the room but I am pretty sure it didn't help much. I also had the displeasure of eating uncooked raw chicken at the hotel - luckily I didn't get sick. Please avoid that hotel from your roster. OVERALL, we were very satisfied and will be booking with you guys again :) THANK YOU

Premium India in Depth Tour

Premium India in Depth

Intrepid Premium India in Depth (November 13 - 25) Mumbai - Delhi Excellent tour leader along with very good local informative guides. 3 changes in accommodation; Mumbai - Gordon House Hotel is excellent, well priced and only 1 street back from Gateway to India but the company changed to Fariyas Hotel, Mumbai which was been renovated as well as painted so very noisy, couldn't use the pool and scaffolding all around. Definitely not ideal. Our second night in Delhi was also cancelled at Jaypee Siddharth Hotel though privately booked and paid for months before the tour so had to find alternative accommodation while on the tour and they told the travel agents they were "closed for renovations" however the tour was booked and stayed there and no renovations were occuring. Hadoti Palace Hotel in Bundi looked nice and rooms were big but not clean especially the toilet and shower. Otherwise all hotels were very nice and rated accurately; cleaning the showers/washrooms would have helped with the mouldy smell but that is somewhat consistent in most countries. November is the start of wedding season in India which are very loud and noisy and have no time restrictions so be prepared for that if going at this time of year. Tour involves quite a number of days travelling in a bus/coach for 4 - 6 hours with a stop every 2 - 3 hours. Rest stops are OK at best with only snack food to purchase. Adjusting the departure time would have helped with timeframes as quite a few days we were getting lunch around 2 - 3 pm when hotel kitchens were closed. Definitely not enough free time for shopping on your own with organized evenings most nights or in a venue on the outside of towns. Toured the markets but they were only a walk through with the group and no time to stop and shop. Restaurants and food was amazing and no one was unwell on the trip. 2 days in Ranthambhore Park was too long and could have done in 1.5 days with more time in Agra. Overall a very good trip for myself and my father (aged 79).

India Tours & Travel

India Attractions & Landmarks Guide

India is often described as being a place of sensory overload -- an explosion of sights, sounds and smells. It can be exotic, spicy, colorful, chaotic and overwhelming, all at the same time.

Whether exploring Mumbai or old Delhi, relaxing on a canal boat in Kerala, riding a mountain train to Darjeeling, waking up for an early morning bathing ritual in Varanasi, attending the Camel Fair in Pushkar, or marveling at the sheer perfection of the Taj Mahal in Agra, India is not to be missed.

This vast country is home to vibrant cities, golden deserts, architectural wonders, serene beaches, cultural celebrations, and gigantic mountains. A visitor could spend years in this immense and diverse land and still find new experiences to uncover each day.

Why visit India on a guided tour?

Many parts of India can be chaotic. crowded, and complicated, and it is often difficult to get around. Between the lack of reliable transportation and a reputation for scamming tourists, a trip to India will be less overwhelming with a knowledgeable guide.

A guide will know the places to go and the places to avoid, as well as be able to tell you more about the country’s history and culture. You also will never have to worry about booking transportation and accommodation-- all you have to do is enjoy the amazing scenery, food, and culture of India.

Eating in India

Will i get sick.

You may have heard stories of travelers in India getting the dreaded “Delhi belly,” or dysentery usually caused from consuming contaminated food or water. When traveling in India, it is important to follow some basic precautions to avoid getting sick:

  • Do not drink the tap water in your hotel or hostel (use bottled water to brush teeth)
  • Avoid uncooked vegetables
  • Stick to reputable restaurants. Many travelers have gotten sick from E. coli and other bacteria after eating street food.
  • Wash your hands often, especially before and after eating
  • Ask for no ice in your beverages
  • Order hot food. Heat kills germs and bacteria.

If you do end up getting sick, over-the-counter medicine like Pepto-Bismol can help with stomach pain. Make sure to drink lots of water. Carbonated beverages may also ease your stomach, but be careful with sugary drinks. If you are feeling extremely ill and/or showing signs of severe dehydration (dizziness, increased heartbeat, confusion), talk to your guide or hotel staff; this could be an emergency.

Regional Cuisine in India

Indian cooking is known for its use of spices and herbs, and rice, vegetables, and bread are staples. Northern Indian (Punjabi) food is very different from southern Indian food.

Northern cuisine is known to be less spicy than southern cuisine, and uses more meat and dairy (which is why southern Indian food is especially popular among vegetarians and vegans). Because of the crops grown in each region, northern Indian dishes use bread while southern dishes use rice.

Classic Indian Dishes

Much of the Indian cuisine that is found in the United States resembles Northern Indian dishes (naan, curry, samosas). Popular dishes in the north include tikka masala and butter masala, Tandoori chicken, and parathe (flatbread relished with pickle or curd). Meals in the north are almost always followed with chai tea.

Southern Indian dishes are generally vegetarian, with lentils or rice as the base. Stews, soups, and dosas (thin, flat pancakes made from rice) are common dishes. Biryani is a popular dish made of rice, meat, and vegetables. Seafood is also common, especially near the coast. People in southern India usually eat smaller meals and snacks, called tiffins, throughout the day.

Chaats are popular savory snacks made of potatoes and spices that are found all over India, especially in roadside carts and street markets. Thali is a platter with smaller bowls filled with foods like lentils, rice, vegetables, and curry. It is usually eaten with naan bread and followed with salad and a dessert.

Navigating India's Cities

Indian cities are chaotic. An array of honking vehicles weave along dusty roads, stopping for the occasional crossing cow. Crowds of people in colorful clothes squeeze their way through even more colorful marketplaces. The air is filled with the smells of spices and the sounds of temple bells.

Embrace this chaos and you'll find that these cities are some of the most vibrant and lively places on earth. Flag down a tuk tuk or a cycle rickshaw and hold on for the rollercoaster journey. Visit a temple to attend a puja (religious ceremony), and receive a red smear on your forehead as a form of blessing.

Get lost in a market trying to find the perfect scarf or henna tattoo. And, of course, when the spicy aromas start to make your mouth water, stop for a tasty curry.

New Delhi, the country's capital, is a common first stop for visitors, and offers quite a modern, cosmopolitan Indian experience. Mumbai is the place to go to sample the Bollywood scene.

Kolkata can be quite jarring at first, but provides visitors with a rich cultural experience. Jodhpur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer all boast impressive historic buildings and forts, and are the starting points for desert treks. The city of Varanasi hosts unique religious events, such as bathing in the Ganges or burning bodies on the riverbank.

In the south, Trivandrum boasts beautiful palaces and beaches, while the  mountain cities up north such as Manali (in the northwest) and Darjeeling (in the northeast) are rich in Nepalese and Tibetan culture.

Cultural Activities in India

India has a unique and rich culture. Cultural experiences in India can be spiritual, culinary, historical, and anything in between. There are many festivals across the country every year; the most popular are Diwali (the arrival of autumn) and Holi (the arrival of spring).

Yogis and spiritual travelers may choose to stay at an ashram for yoga and meditation or visit a religious site such as Varanasi or Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha is said to have found enlightenment. Many tour operators offer tours focused on yoga and meditation.

Travelers can also witness religious rituals dating back thousands of years. The most popular religions in India are Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam, and religious rituals are plentiful. Make sure to check with your guide about respectful attire and behavior when attending these rituals.

Culinary experiences in India include cooking classes, authentic meals, and wine tastings.

Active travel in India

Cycling tours are especially popular in India. Common routes are along the coast in Kerala or up in the Himalayas. Cycling can be done nearly anywhere, so it is a great way to see the country.

Physically fit travelers may wish to hike to Mt. Everest Base Camp . This is usually a ten- to fourteen-day trek due to the time it takes to acclimate to the altitude, but the views are spectacular and the hike is not too difficult for experienced hikers. This trek is extremely popular, so make sure to book with a guide well in advance.

The Indian Desert

The Thar Desert, in Northwest India, covers an impressive 120,000 square miles, most of which is located in the state of Rajasthan. The golden sand dunes, blue skies and lush oases are the perfect setting for a camel trek. Rocking back and forth on a camel, stopping to sample fresh goat's milk at an oasis, followed by a night spent underneath the stars makes for an unforgettable experience.

Top Historical Sites in India

Besides the well-known historical sites of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Old Delhi, India has an endless amount of historically rich locations and monuments. Hampi is an ancient village that was once the capital of Vijayanagar, one of the most powerful Hindu empires. The village is filled with monuments and remnants of its great past.

The Gateway of India is a large stone arch in Mumbai that was built in 1924 for King George V and Queen Mary of England. It serves as a reminder of the period of British rule in India, but also as a symbol of victory for India; it was through the arch that British troops marched out when India was granted independence.

Jallianwala Bagh is also an important site from the period of Brisish rule. Here, British troops fired on unarmed protesters in 1919. Today, a sculpture memorializes this tragic massacre, and visitors can watch a light and sound show retelling the event.

The Taj Mahal is a major tourist attraction in India, and it's easy to see why. This stunning white marble memorial from Shah Jahan to his late wife Mumtaz Mahal is a must see. Strolling through the picturesque gardens and marveling at the ethereal structure is well worth the journey to Agra (and the early morning start to beat the crowds).

Visiting the Taj Mahal in person is on many travelers’ bucket lists, and usually one of the first things that travelers to India want to see. Entrance to the palace is not cheap, but prices are usually lower during the off-season (May to October). The palace is usually open sunrise to sundown every day except during religious holidays.

If you want to avoid the crowds and skip the entrance fee, the Taj Mahal can be seen from Mehtab Bagh, a garden across from the palace.

The Northern tips of India are dominated by the Himalayas. Here, the culture is largely influenced by neighboring Nepal , and Nepali is the dominant language in many areas. The Himalayan region is also rich in Tibetan culture, and many towns are centered around Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The cities here move at a far slower pace to their southern counterparts, and the surrounding towns and villages make for a relaxing break. Don't get too relaxed though, as the mountains are also home to adventure activities such as paragliding and rafting.

Indian cuisine is world famous. The flavorful dishes here are unlike anywhere else. It is also the perfect place for vegetarian and vegan dining. Be warned, however, that curries here are far spicier than their western imitators.

Despite the concern of catching the infamous "Delhi belly", food in India is generally perfectly safe to eat. Digestive difficulty usually comes from drinking contaminated water. Drink purified water only, don't put ice in your drinks, and avoid uncooked vegetables, and you should have no problems.

Trains are the preferred method of long distance travel across the massive subcontinent, and this in itself is a draw for many visitors. Many routes offer scenic window views. In the Goan region, the Vasco de Gama- Londa route takes in postcard beaches and picturesque mountains, before passing by the immense Dudhsagar waterfalls. The relatively short journey from Jaipur to Jaisalmer takes in a beautiful desert landscape. Darjeeling and its surrounds are home to the UNESCO protected "toy train"- the highest railway in the world, winding its way through cloud covered mountains and tea plantations.

Overnight trains are perfectly comfortable to sleep on. A first class ticket will usually get you a private cabin, while second class will get you a fold-out bunk bed in a shared carriage. Third class is hard wooden seats only, definitely not a good option for the comfort traveler!

Wildlife Experiences in India

High on every visitor's wildlife check list is undoubtedly a glimpse of a tiger. While this is far from guaranteed, tiger reserves such as Kanha and Tadoba-Andhari offer the best chances. Even if the tigers remain elusive, there's a good chance of spotting wild dogs, sloths, and deer, as well as an abundance of exotic birds.

Many tour operators have eliminated elephant rides from their itineraries in the interest of animal welfare. Instead, find an elephant sanctuary where they are well looked after. And of course, let's not forget the monkeys that can be found in the mountains, cities, temples, roads, and, well, just about anywhere.

India has 104 national parks, all of them filled with unique and fascinating wildlife. There are a few parks that are especially popular among tourists seeking a one-of-a-kind wildlife experience:

Ranthambore National Park - Formerly a hunting ground, Ranthambore is the most famous national park in India. Visitors can see tigers and rare birds, as well as some historical monuments and former hunting lodges.

Great Himalayan National Park - The Himalayas are famous for their stunning beauty and abundance of wildlife. At Great Himalayan National Park, visitors can see bears, golden eagles, and snow leopards.

Nagarahole National Park - Visitors to Nagarahole National Park can safari through the marshlands of southern India and see elephants, rhinos, and alligators.

Common Tourist Scams in India

Unfortunately tourist scams are quite common in India. It is recommended to do your research and know how to react if you find yourself in one of these situations. The benefit of going with a tour group is knowing that your guide can keep you informed and prevent these situations from happening.

Here are two common tourist scams in India:

Your taxi driver insists that your hotel has burnt down, moved, or changed names so instead he will drive you to his friend’s hotel in order to get commission. The hotels they drive you to end up being incredibly expensive. If this happens, find another taxi driver.

A police officer will walk up to your taxi (and no one else’s) and tell you that there is a road fee to pay. Depending on the taxi driver, he might say no or agree with the police officer. Unfortunately if he agrees with the police, they won’t stop until you agree to give them money.

The Best India Tour Companies To Discover India With!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

India is like nowhere you’ve ever experienced before. A sensory overload in every way, this bewitching, frustrating and beautiful country will leave you with memories that you’ll never forget, and get under your skin in a way you never could have imagined.

One of the amazing things about travelling in India is how diverse it is. The seventh-largest country in the world (with the second-biggest population), a trip here could take you from verdant rice terraces in Tamil Nadu to the sun-drenched beaches of Goa, from quiet forests filled with tigers to snowy mountain peaks in the Himalayas.

Among all this glorious natural beauty you’ll find wonderful UNESCO sites , cities bursting with life, streets humming to the constant movement of people and vehicles.

Ranthambore

We can’t pretend it’s the easiest place to travel, but it’s certainly one of the most fascinating. There are wonders awaiting you each day – not only the spellbinding Taj Mahal, but ancient temples, sacred festivals, bustling bazaars. And speaking of wonders, don’t forget about the food.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Indian food, because you’re about to experience the real deal. The delicate fish curries of the south contrast with the fiery flavours in the north, but all are equally mouth-watering. Samosas and lassi by the side of the road will become an afternoon habit.

Our top tip? Embrace the madness! This is the best – and possibly only – way to experience India. Trying to struggle against the chaos and unpredictability will only exhaust travellers; breathing deep and letting whatever happens, happen is the trick to making the most of your time here. Travelling with a tour is another way to really enjoy your experience.

Best India Tour Companies

Planning a big trip can be stressful enough at the best of times; in India, it can be completely overwhelming. There are some amazing tour companies out there, so why not make the most of them? Not only will the planning process be so much simpler, so will the experience itself.

Experienced, and often local, guides will help you navigate the travel and the exploration with minimal hassle. You’ll also meet lots of great people to see this magnificent country with.

So, what are some of the best India tour companies to help you explore this exhilarating nation?

Intrepid Travel

Peregrine adventures, the dragon trip.

Intrepid was born when two Australian friends went on a trip around Africa with nothing but a modified truck, some supplies and friends they met along the way.

This carefree, adventurous approach is something they have tried to bring to the Intrepid tours, which range from ‘basix’ to ‘comfort’ options. It’s a super flexible approach with a careful balance of organised activities and free time – there are opt-in extra activities if you prefer a full itinerary!

Everybody and anybody are welcome on an Intrepid tour, although you’ll probably find the age range skews a bit younger. Experienced local guides take you off the beaten track to discover local markets, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and beautiful scenery that you couldn’t discover on your own.

It’s the perfect company to experience India with because they’ll offer you the freedom you need to absorb the country, while providing that support and planning that makes the whole trip less stressful.

Best India Tour Companies

Example Tour: Indian Getaway

This is the perfect trip to give you just a small taste of what India has to offer. It lasts for 11 days, starting and finishing in New Delhi. The focus is on exploring the culture of the country, including the dazzling ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur, the chaos and sights of Delhi and the spiritual hub of Varanasi.

And don’t worry, the Taj Mahal is definitely included in this. The iconic monument is even more spectacular in the flesh.

Very different from the Taj Mahal, but a definite highlight of the tour, is the trip to Tordi Garh, a remote Rajasthani village that’s far off the beaten path. Here you’ll meet local people and see how the community goes about its daily life. There’s an option for a hot air balloon ride over Jaipur before heading back to the history and bustle of Delhi.

Accommodation includes guesthouses, heritage hotels and an overnight train. Meals are superb (naturally). Friendly and energetic leaders make the whole experience a pleasure.

Estimated cost per day: £37.

This cheerful, open-minded company specialises in trips around Asia and promises to offer authentic experiences for passionate travellers. This is certainly a promise it lives up to with creative tour itineraries and friendly ‘adventure leaders.’

It was originally launched in China to help young backpackers who couldn’t speak the language and has expanded to explore South-East and Central Asia.

It’s definitely a budget option so you will find it affordable, perhaps quite basic, and packed with younger travellers. To us, this means even more fun, of course! They’re committed to having a positive impact on the places they visit and to helping people learn more about the world.

Don’t expect luxury accommodation, but do expect amazing memories. It’s a top choice among India tour companies for people on a budget.

After a couple of days exploring Jaipur , the tour takes you out of the cities and into the desert on a camel safari. Sleeping out in the open gazing up at the starry skies is really incredible – the milky way seems close enough to touch when you’re away from city lights.

Enjoy a final few days in Jodhpur and the Old City of Udaipur before finishing in Mumbai. In the group of 20, you’re sure to make some great new friends, and the guides are fantastic.

Navigate the busy streets of Old Delhi on a rickshaw ride

The nation's capital rings to the sounds of car horns, chai stalls and the chatter of its 29 million inhabitants. Shuffle into an open-air rickshaw and ride through the streets of the Old Delhi, admiring traditional Havelis and stopping for a famous mango or pomegranate frozen kulfi to cool off in the summer.

Gaze at the sun-kissed Taj Mahal in Agra

Take a journey to Agra and be stirred by the ultimate symbol of fairy-tale architecture. Inlaid with precious gemstones, this ivory marble palace was originally commissioned by an emperor as a tomb for his wife, standing as a symbol of love and opulence since 1653.

Spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park

Clamber into the back of an open-top safari car and spot leopards, marsh crocodiles, hyenas and Bengal tigers wandering their natural habitat. Sprawling over almost 300km 2 , the Ranthambore National Park is also home to a 10th-century fort, giant banyan trees and many lakes.

Experience royal Rajasthan

Enthralling cities interrupt the inhospitable desert in Rajasthan, India's largest state. Home to around 30 royal palaces including the floating lake palace of Udaipur and the iconic peach palace of Hawa Mahal, you will be swept up by the regal heritage found in this part of India.

Visit one of the Bollywood studios in Mumbai

Take a journey into the metropolis of Mumbai to uncover the prestigious culture of the Indian film industry. Without knowing a word of Hindi or a single Bollywood film, you will be captivated by this passionate industry. Be guided past the homes of megastars and catch a glimpse behind the scenes as the cameras roll.

Our top 5 things to do in India

Let Trafalgar guide your India vacation through a majestic tapestry of landmarks and experience. From the Taj Mahal to the tiger parks of Rajasthan, these are just some of the soul-stirring moments waiting when you travel with us.

National Museum

India vacation tours get under the skin of the country's culture with a trip to the National Museum of New Delhi. Roam the halls and take in elaborate jewellery, ancient manuscripts and traditional miniature paintings on cloth. From the prehistoric to the modern, this expansive Indian museum is a must-visit.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The King Shivaji museum, or CSMVS, is a pride of Mumbai showcasing around 50,000 exhibitions within an impressive Indo-gothic building. After taking in archaeology, art and natural history, spend time in the tranquil, flower-filled gardens that contrast the bustle of Mumbai.

City Palace

Taking almost 400 years to be built, the City Palace of Udaipur is an architectural masterpiece beside Lake Pichola. Enter the museum section of the palace complex via the royal courtyard, allowing plenty of time to immerse in the artefacts of India's distant past.

Best museums in India

Step off the streets and find a moment of quiet in a spellbinding museum. Here are just a few of the places we will visit in India to peel back the many layers of culture.

A thin fried bread mentioned in 12th-century Sanskrit scriptures, paratha is part of India's cultural heritage. Try it stuffed with spinach, fenugreek and the cheese of paneer, or take it on its own for lapping up the leftover gravy from a delectable curry.

Varan Bhaat Diva

Popular along the sunny coastline of Goa, Varan Bhaat Diva is Indian comfort food of peas, beans, rice and many spices. Often given to those who are exhausted or sick, you will feel soothed by the warmth and turmeric in this family favorite.

Chicken cafreal

Inspired by the dishes brought from Portugal during colonial times, the herb coated chicken legs of cafreal will cement your infatuation with Indian cuisine. Shallow fried and often served with potato and wedges of citrus fruit, India tour packages aren't complete until cafreal is served.

Best food in India

Despite the many famous dishes that have journeyed far from the lands of India, this country still has culinary delights that will rouse your tastebuds. From warm bread to fragrant curries, we'll guide you through the secrets of this spicy land.

What to pack for India

People packing for a tour

A few good books

The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.

Light and modest clothing

Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Medication for stomach upsets

Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

Top 20 Travel Companies That Dominate the World Of Tours & Travel in India

If you’re looking to explore the world, there’s no shortage of amazing travel companies out there to help make your dreams a reality. But when it comes to tours and travel in India, a few names stand out from the pack.

India ranks amongst the topmost tourist destinations in the world.

Diverse culture, thousands of tourist attractions, excellent connectivity to every continent, and well-developed tourism infrastructure attracts millions of domestic and foreign tourists to explore more about this country.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals to India during July 2017 amounted to 788,000.

In 2016, India’s tourism industry directly contributed around US$ 71.7 billion to the country’s economy, and this figure was forecasted to rise to 148.2 billion by 2027.

The number of domestic tourists- or Indians who travel within the country stands between five and seven million, though this figure cannot be verified due to several parameters involved.

History of Indian Travel Companies

The history of India’s travel companies is rather interesting. The first major travel ‘arranger’ to open on the Indian subcontinent was British-owned Cox & Kings.

This company was started in 1758. Rapid colonization of the Indian subcontinent and the need for people to travel due to industrialization saw more companies enter this lucrative business.

Today, India is home to some of the largest travel companies in the world.

List of Top 20 Travel Companies in India in 2022:

India has several leading travel websites. Here we list those that have an online presence. Additionally, some also have brick-and-mortar offices across India and abroad.

1. Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation

Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) ranks as India’s topmost travel company. IRCTC is ranked as the best travel website in India.

It is a subsidiary of Indian Railways- the world’s fourth-largest railway network. IRCTC also ranks as the eighth topmost employer in the world.

IRCTC issues nearly two million passenger tickets daily through its web portal as well as counters at every railway station.

You can also book hotel accommodation, air tickets, and sightseeing tours through the IRCTC portal.

Commercial and real estate demand

Tourism significantly influences India’s commercial and real estate sectors. Key factors include expansion strategies, operational efficiency, location preferences, employee welfare policies, and sustainability goals.

Tourism giants require substantial, strategically located offices in major cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Bangalore. They may also set up regional offices in smaller towns. Diverse office space needs lead to choices between prime business districts and cost-effective alternatives, sometimes favouring co-working spaces for flexibility.

Rental property requirements depend on employee count, retention strategies, travel frequency, and accommodation preferences. Some companies offer housing allowances, while others encourage employees to find their lodging or arrange temporary accommodations like hotels or homestays.

These tourism giants influence the real estate market by investing in hotels, resorts, serviced apartments, and more to enhance customer experiences. Some collaborate with developers for tourism-focused properties, diversifying revenue streams. Corporate social responsibility initiatives support projects like schools and hospitals, enhancing their brand image.

What Do Indian Tourists Want? We Asked 5 Hotel Brands – India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 8th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

Due to close proximity, the nations of Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan witness significant tourism from India. With preferences of Indian travelers changing, boutique properties are reaching out with diverse offerings to attract this tourism segment.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

India is a key source market for the neighboring countries of Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. In February, India was the biggest source market for Nepal, accounting for more than 25% of foreign tourist arrivals in the country.

For Bhutan, Indians accounted for 60% of the total international tourists in the first three months of 2024. The country is expecting 150,000 Indian tourists this year, more than double that of 2023.

In Sri Lanka, the number of tourists from India in the island nation increased by over 100% in January.

What are they doing to keep the growth going? Skift caught up with some boutique hotel brands from these three countries that were in India for a trade event.

Here’s what we learned:

Amrit Rajaratnam, founder of Galle Fort Hotel, Sri Lanka: Indian travelers are seeking authentic, experiential, and unique experiences, Rajaratnam said.

“They seek bespoke luxury experiences and are inclined to invest in shorter, luxe getaways as opposed to longer trips. They want unique, immersive travel experiences, which are family friendly and exclusive.” Rajaratnam added that Indian travelers prefer privacy, often booking entire properties for their group travels.

Khin Omar Win , owner of Gangtey Lodge, Bhutan: “Discerning Indian travelers are more mindful, curious, and adventurous. They seek cultural immersion. The biggest trend we have experienced is the shift in interest from classic travel to developed destinations to more immersive, nature-focused travel and soft adventure,” Win said.

She added that pre-Covid, her property received very little interest from the Indian market but this has significantly increased post-pandemic.

Nilanka Martinus, managing director of Mosvold Boutique Hotels, Sri Lanka : “Indian travelers are looking for unique boutique luxury experiences, coupled with a discerning palate for great food, particularly with a strong preference for vegetarian options. They highly value personalized attention and excellent service standards.”

The Indian market, particularly the middle and upper-middle class, is increasingly inclined to splurge on luxurious travel experiences and boutique hotels and have moved away from package tours, Martinus shared.

Prabina KC Chhetri, sales and marketing director of Dwarika’s Group of Hotels and Resorts, Nepal: She said that apart from experiential tours, Indians are also inclined towards holistic well-being, spiritual and cultural experiences, and sustainable travel.

Hashan Cooray, managing director of Jetwing Hotels, Sri Lanka: Jetwing Hotels has been witnessing increased interest in properties that offer agricultural experiences and tea estate experiences. “Luxury wellness retreats are seeing increased demand from Indian travelers, where they look to stay for a week or more, immersing themselves in daily physical activities, health routines and treatments. Wildlife tours in Yala, Kumana as well as in the Sigiriya region are also gaining popularity,” said Cooray.

Thailand Extends Visa Waiver for Indians Until November 11

Thailand has extended the visa-free arrival arrangement for Indian travelers till November 11. The Thai cabinet on Tuesday approved a plan to extend the visa exemption for six more months.

In November last year, Thailand decided to grant visa-free entry to Indians and Taiwanese citizens from November 10 till May this year. This visa waiver would have ended on Friday.

Travelers from the two countries would be allowed to stay without a visa in Thailand for a period not extending 30 days.

In the first four months of 2024, Thailand recorded over 12 million visitor arrivals, representing a 39% increase over the same period in 2023. More than 550,000 Indians visited Thailand during this period. Thailand expects the number of visitor arrivals from India to reach 1.7 million this year .

India is one of the most important source markets for Thailand and is also the fastest-growing. In 2023, over 1.6 million Indian travelers visited Thailand , making the country the fourth-largest source market for Thailand. These tourists spent more than THB 63 billion ($1.7 billion).

Sri Lanka has also renewed its visa-free entry for visitors from India, China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. The visa-free entry will allow these visitors to stay in Sri Lanka for 30 days.

IHG Opens India’s First Voco Hotel

IHG Hotels and Resorts has opened India’s first voco hotel – voco Jim Corbett. The 70-key resort marks the introduction of IHG’s seventh brand in India. The hotel chain has four other voco hotels in its India pipeline – in Mumbai, Amritsar, Gurugram, and Goa.

Last month, the company announced its plans to double its operating portfolio in India , aiming to have 100 trading hotels in the country by 2029. In 2023, the hotel chain’s occupancy rate surpassed pre-Covid levels significantly, it said in a statement.

Post the 2023 performance, the company has ambitious expansion plans for India. IHG’s Southwest Asia managing director Sudeep Jain said, “We are on track to record another successful year, fueling our growth ambitions in the country.”

80% of Indian Travelers Prefer Domestic Destinations

Nearly 80% of the Indian travelers prefer domestic destinations as opposed to international ones, shared travel advisory firm VIDEC’s CEO Virendra Jain at the Arabian Travel Mart 2024. While speaking about India’s rapid emergence as a crucial source market for global tourism, Jain shared the characteristics and behaviors of Indian travelers.

As many as 59% travelers in India prefer short weekend trips. “The primary motivator for these trips is the need for a break from daily life, with 33% of travelers seeking leisure escapes.”

He also asserted the need to understand the trends and behaviors among Indian travelers. “Coupled with India’s rising digital proficiency and infrastructural enhancements, these trends are shaping India into a dynamic source market for global tourism, necessitating targeted engagement strategies to capitalize on this growth,” he said.

Correction: This article has been updated to correct the pronoun for Khin Omar Win, owner of Gangtey Lodge in Bhutan.

15 Best Places to Visit in India, According to Travel Experts

F rom the alpine meadows of Kashmir to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, these are some of the subcontinent’s most enchanting destinations.

As a former longtime Delhiite and frequent traveler to India, people often ask me what the country is like. I never know how to respond, for trying to sum up a nation as vast and diverse as India feels impossible. So, instead, I asked a few experts for their insights.

“If you visit India, you feel you have visited several countries, as every part is different,” says Mohd Shafi Billo, an inbound tour operator who specializes in helping international travelers plan their trips to the country. “It’s an exceptional destination, thanks to its culture, history, and inclusiveness of different people from different faiths, and it has everything to offer, from forts to mausoleums, wildlife tours to mountain adventures.”

Shoba Rudra, founder and partner at hospitality consultancy Rare India , agrees. “The country is living a dynamic moment in history, ever-changing,” she says. “What's constant, however, is the vibrant culture lived through its festivals, cuisine, heritage, crafts, and performing arts.”

While it would take years to see it all, India is an approachable destination — if you can narrow things down. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to get you started on your sojourn to the subcontinent.

Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”

On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting.

Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.

Auroville, Tamil Nadu

If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. Andaman Islands

Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits.

While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.

Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day.

Jaipur. Rajasthan

The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”

Udaipur, Rajasthan

T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms.

If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins.

Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.

India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.
