I want to mount an outboard motor on the Intex Excursion 5. What is the recommended motor size? An outboard motor like a trolling motor or 2 HP gas motor will work. Anything larger than that is not recommended.

Can I repair the Excursion 5 myself if it develops an air leak? Small pinhole leaks and punctures are easily patched, but repairs to holes larger than 2 inches is discouraged by Intex for safety reasons.

Do I need to register the Excursion 5? Yes, it would definitely need to be registered if you’re going to put a motor on.

How do I get a Certificate of Origin to register the boat? Contact Intex and provide them with the boat’s Hull Identification Number, found on the bottom of the capacity label at the boat’s stern.

Can you turn the seats around to face in the same direction instead of each other? No, the seats are fixed. The mounts built in for them don’t allow for either seat to be turned around. You can take them out entirely, however.

How long does it take to inflate the Excursion 5? The boat takes about 15 minutes or so to inflate with the manual pump (included). An electric pump will do the same job in five to ten minutes.

Can a single person row the Intex Excursion 5? Yes it’s possible, although it’s not easy due to the boat’s shape. If you’re planning to go out alone, it is probably a good idea to invest in a small outboard motor. Also, if you don’t necessarily need a boat as big as the Excursion 5, we recommend checking out the smaller Intex Excursion 4 .

How many people can I take fishing with me? Given the gear and tackle you’d have to take along, the Intex Excursion 5 will be able to take two or three fishermen comfortably.

Communist Party Central Committee Presidium unanimously votes to grant Grudinin Alferov's Duma seat

MOSCOW. March 18 (Interfax) - The Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation approved the handover of Zhores Alferov's vacated parliamentary seat to Pavel Grudinin, the director of the Lenin State Farm company and a former presidential candidate, on Monday, an Interfax correspondent reported.

"The decision to grant the seat to Grudinin was unanimous," Vadim Solovyov, the head of the Communist Party legal department, told Interfax.

Communist Party spokesperson Alexander Yushchenko, in turn, told Interfax that relevant documents were to be submitted to the Central Elections Commission as early as Monday.

Last week, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov told Interfax that the Presidium of the party's Central Committee "shares the opinion that Pavel Grudinin should be the one [to whom the Duma seat should be given]," although other candidates were considered.

Alferov, a former Duma deputy from the Communist Party faction and a winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics, died aged 88 on March 1, 2019. The Duma ruled on March 7 to terminate Alferov's mandate.

Alferov was elected to the State Duma on a federal ticket, and so the Communist Party's authorized body is entitled to nominate any candidate on this ticket to be endorsed by the Central Elections Commission.

Grudinin was elected chairman of the Council of Deputies in the town of Vidnoye outside Moscow in September 2017.

He ran for president as the Communist Party's candidate in 2018.

The Vidnoye Council of Deputies dismissed him from his office as chairman on February 14, 2019 and terminated his mandate on February 26, 2019.

Several American fishing boats operating in the Bering Sea recently encountered something considerably more powerful than a school of pollock: the Russian Navy.

The fishermen were warned to leave the area and were surprised when the U.S. Coast Guard told them to comply with warnings issued by the Russian warships . The exercise reportedly featured an amphibious ship, a missile cruiser, and a cruise missile-firing submarine.

According to the New York Times , the encounter took place on August 27 in the Bering Sea, which is the only place in the world where U.S. and Russian territory are adjacent to each other, and where the two countries are at their closest (only 55 miles apart). International law says each country can claim up to 12 miles from shore as its exclusive territorial waters.

Part of Russia's “ Ocean Shield ” exercises, however, took place in America’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), a 200-nautical mile strip extending from shoreline where the U.S. can claim exclusive economic development rights. Somewhat ironically, foreign military forces can enter an EEZ, but not a fishing boat intent on trawling for fish.

Russian military forces reportedly barked orders for the fishing boats to leave the area, citing an impending missile launch. When the fishermen contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, the service said, “Just do what they say.”

The exercise, which involved 40 Russian Navy ships and 50 planes, rankled the American fishing boat captains. At least one fisherman reported more than $1 million in probable losses due to the exercise. The fishermen appeared blindsided by the Russians, though Moscow reportedly warned of the impending exercise through the HYDROPAC (“Hydrographic Pacific”) system. According to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council :

HYDROPAC are navigational warnings that are issued regularly and contain information about persons in distress, or objects and events that pose an immediate hazard to navigation. HYDROPAC is one of five types of navigation warnings that are categorized by their location. These maritime security alerts and advisories are issued by the US Maritime Advisory System.

The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency distributes a weekly Notice to Mariners email to subscribers, warning them of such alerts and advisories. Fishermen and landlubbers can sign up for it here .

Military exercises are dangerous places for civilian vessels. Back in May, an Iranian warship accidentally sank a fellow Iranian warship with an anti-ship missile. Even outside of exercises, things happen: In 2001, the U.S. Navy attack submarine USS Greenville accidentally rammed into a Japanese fisheries research vessel, killing nine. And in 2015, a Royal Navy submarine ran into the nets of a fishing trawler in the Irish Sea , nearly dragging the small boat underwater.

According to the Moscow Times , the Russian Navy exercises included missile firing exercises from the guided missile cruiser Varyag and the guided missile submarine Omsk .
