Introduced on September 12, 2017, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus represented a "huge step forward for the iPhone," according to Apple CEO Tim Cook. The two devices "improve on everything we love about iPhone" with overhauled internals and a tweaked design, but the changes introduced were not as dramatic as the changes brought to the iPhone X , launched alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus mix a little bit of the iPhone X with a little bit of the previous-generation iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The overall design is the same as previous-generation devices, but the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus adopted glass bodies sandwiched in a a matching aluminum frame . Unlike the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 continued to include Touch ID Home button and thick bezels at the top and bottom of the display.

Presently available in three colors , Silver, Space Gray, and Gold, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus featured the most durable glass ever in a smartphone in a reinforced steel and aluminum structure that is IP67 water and dust resistant . The stereo speaker setup in the device was updated to be 25 percent louder with deeper bass.

The iPhone 8 includes a 4.7-inch display, while the iPhone 8 Plus features a larger 5.5-inch display. Both displays were upgraded with True Tone support , designed to adapt color temperature and intensity to the ambient light in a room for a more natural, paper-like viewing experience. 3D Touch and P3 wide color support for a greater range of colors continue to be available.

Apple chose glass for the body of the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus to enable a Qi-based inductive wireless charging feature, which allows the two devices to be charged when placed atop any Qi-certified inductive charger.

Inside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, there's a six-core A11 Bionic chip , which Apple at launch said was the smartest, most powerful chip ever introduced in a smartphone. There are two performance cores that are 25 percent faster than the A10 Fusion chip in the iPhone 7, and four efficiency cores that are 70 percent faster .

With a second-generation performance controller , all six cores can be harnessed at the same time for much improved speeds when handling multi-threaded workloads. There's an Apple-designed 3-core GPU that's 30 percent faster than the previous-generation GPU, and two of the cores, the Neural Engine , make machine learning tasks faster than ever before.

iphone8sizesdesign

Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus feature improved cameras with better sensors that let 83 percent more light into the wide-angle camera compared to the previous generation. There's also a upgraded image signal processor built into the A11 that brings better low light performance, including faster autofocus, and there are new pixel processing techniques for sharpness pixel texture.

Apple also added hardware-enabled multi-band noise reduction , deeper pixels, and a new color filter for less noise, better color saturation, and a wider dynamic range of color.

iphone8plusallcolors

The larger iPhone 8 Plus continues to offer a dual-lens camera setup with both an f/2.8 telephoto lens and a f/1.8 wide-angle lens, both of which have upgraded sensors. Optical image stabilization continues to be available for the iPhone 8 and the wide-angle lens in the iPhone 8 Plus.

Apple's Portrait Mode, limited to the iPhone 8 Plus's dual-lens camera system, has been updated with a Portrait Lighting effect to dynamically change the lighting in an image to mimic studio lighting techniques.

With the upgraded image signal processor and an Apple-designed video encoder that enables faster video frame rates and real-time image and motion analysis , video capture on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus is better than ever. 4K video at 60 frames per second is supported, as is 1080p slow motion video .

Apple designed the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus with augmented reality in mind. The cameras are calibrated for AR , there's an updated gyroscope and accelerometer to enable more accurate motion tracking, and the A11 Bionic offers world tracking and scenes while the GPU renders realistic graphics and the image signal processor offers real-time lighting estimation. iOS 11 introduced hundreds of new AR apps designed using ARKit, all of which can be experienced on iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

The iPhone 8 was replaced by the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR in September of 2018. Apple is now selling the iPhone 8 at a reduced starting price of $599 and the iPhone 8 Plus starting at $699

Apple in August 2018 launched a logic board repair program for the iPhone 8, offering free for iPhone 8 models that are affected by an issue that can cause restarts, freezing, and unresponsive devices.

According to Apple, a "very small percentage" of iPhone 8 devices have logic boards with a manufacturing defect that are eligible for a free repair. The repair program applies only to the iPhone 8, not the iPhone 8 Plus or other iPhone models.

Affected customers should check their serial numbers on Apple's website to see if they're eligible for a repair. Customers who have an iPhone 8 impacted by a faulty logic board need to contact Apple support or visit an Apple retail store to get it fixed.

The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus can be purchased from the online Apple Store or in Apple retail stores around the world. Carrier stores and big box retailers like Target and Best Buy also offer the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus in the United States.

Pricing for the iPhone 8 starts at $599 for the 64GB model while pricing for the iPhone 8 Plus starts at $699 for the 64GB model.

If you want to see how all of the iPhones in Apple's current lineup compare, make sure to check out our dedicated iPhone guide , which has details on each iPhone along with buying suggestions.

From the front, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus look identical to the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, continuing to offer the same 4.7 and 5.5-inch display sizes with thick bezels at the top and bottom of the device.

iphone88plusdisplaysize

At the top of the device, there's a cutout for the front-facing camera, speaker, and accompanying sensors, and at the bottom of the device, there continues to be a capacitive "solid state" Home button that uses the Taptic Engine to mimic a button press. Touch ID is built into the Home button.

iphone8silverdesign

The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus might look a lot like the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, but the glass body is a major distinguishing feature. According to Apple, the front and back glass is the most durable it's ever made. The two devices come in Silver, Space Gray, and a new shade of Gold that's a little bit rosier than the traditional gold shades.

iphone8andiphone8plus

Apple used a seven-layer ink process to add color to the glass, giving the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus a rich depth of color. An oleophobic coating ensures that smudges and fingerprints wipe away easily.

talliphone8

The glass shell and display are held together by a stainless steel internal frame and an aerospace-grade 7000 Series aluminum band that matches the color of each iPhone for a seamless look. Small, nearly invisible antenna lines cut through the aluminum frame to ensure adequate signal.

flatiphone8

Though the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus use durable glass wrapped around a stainless steel internal frame, glass breaks when dropped on the ground, and the two devices have proven to be highly breakable when subjected to drop tests , even from heights as low as the waist.

On the left side of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, there's a mute switch and volume buttons, and the right side houses the sleep/wake button. At the bottom, there's a Lightning port and speaker holes. Like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the two new devices have no headphone jack and require Lightning headphones or Bluetooth headphones.

iphone8designfronthalf

Size wise, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus are ever so slightly larger than the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. In usage, the size difference is tiny that it won't really be noticeable, but it's there.

The iPhone 8 measures in at 138.4mm tall by 67.3mm wide, and it's 7.3mm thick. Comparatively, the iPhone 7 is 138.8mm tall, 67.1mm wide, and 7.1mm thick.

iphone8size

The iPhone 8 Plus measures in at 158.4mm tall by 78.1mm wide and it's 7.5mm thick. Comparatively, the iPhone 7 Plus is 158.2mm tall, 77.9mm wide, and 7.3mm thick.

iphone8plusrearcameraspacegray

At the rear, the iPhone 8 continues to feature a single-lens protruding camera, while the iPhone 8 Plus features a wider dual-lens rear camera arranged in a horizontal orientation.

Apple in April introduced a new (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, featuring a bright red glass-backed shell and a black front panel. Apple in 2017 introduced (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models, but those devices had a white front panel, so the new iPhone 8 is a deviation.

product red iphone 8 and 8 plus

Apple's (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus became available for purchase in April both online and in retail stores.

Like the previous-generation iPhones, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus are water and dust resistant. An IP67 dust/water resistance rating means the two devices are entirely dust proof and able to withstand 1 meter of water (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes.

iphone8inwater

While the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus can stand up to splashes, rain, and brief accidental water exposure, but intentional water exposure should continue to be avoided. Apple warns that water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and could decrease as a result of normal wear, plus Apple's warranty does not cover any kind of water damage to an iOS device.

While the iPhone X (which is being sold alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus) features no Home button and thus no Touch ID, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus both have Touch ID functionality, making them an excellent choice for customers not ready to give up fingerprint-based authentication in favor of the new facial recognition function in the iPhone X.

iphone8touchid

The Touch ID in the two devices is second-generation Touch ID that's super fast and accurate. Touch ID is used as a biometric authentication method for unlocking the iPhone, confirming iTunes purchases, opening passcode-protected apps, and confirming Apple Pay payments.

The iPhone 8 features a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1334 by 750 with 326 pixels per inch and a 1400:1 contrast ratio, while the iPhone 8 Plus features a 5.5-inch display with a 1920 by 1080 resolution, 401 pixels per inch, and a 1300:1 contrast ratio.

iphone8display 2

Both devices offer support for P3 wide color for rich, true-to-life colors and 625 cd/m2 max brightness, identical to the previous-generation iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

New in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is the True Tone feature that was first introduced in the iPad Pro. True Tone uses the ambient light sensor to detect the lighting in a room, adjusting the color temperature and intensity to match the light for a more natural viewing experience.

truetonedisplay

True Tone is designed to make the iPhone's display appear more paper-like when reading for more comfort and less eyestrain.

Apple says the A11 Bionic processor in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is the most powerful and smartest chip that's ever been introduced in a smartphone. It features a six-core CPU with two high performance cores and four high efficiency cores.

The two A11 cores are 25 percent faster than the A10 chip in the iPhone 7, while the four high-efficiency cores are 70 percent faster.

All four cores can be harnessed at the same time with a second-generation performance controller resulting in 70 percent better performance for multi-threaded workflows.

In early Geekbench benchmarks , the A11 earned an average single-core score of 4169 and an average multi-core score of 9836. The A11 outperforms the A10X in the iPad Pro and even the dual-core processor in the 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro models.

a11geekbench

The A11 chip includes a new Apple-designed three-core CPU that's 30 percent faster than the GPU in the A10 chip, introducing much improved graphics performance. There's also an embedded M11 Motion coprocessor that captures motion-based data from the compass, accelerometer, and gyroscope to power fitness capabilities, augmented reality experiences, and more, without significant power drain.

Two of the efficiency cores make up the Neural Engine, designed to process machine learning tasks.

There's 2GB of RAM in the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 and 3GB of RAM in the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone 8 Plus has more RAM to support the dual-lens camera and the Portrait Mode features.

The glass bodies of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus enable an inductive wireless charging feature, which is new to Apple's iOS device lineup. Apple has adopted the Qi open wireless charging standard that's built into many Android devices, so the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus can charge wirelessly using any Qi-certified charging accessory.

iphone8wirelesscharging 1

Qi charging is inductive, which means the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus must be placed on a charging mat or similar accessory to be able to charge. While physical contact is required, the wireless charging feature works with most cases.

As of iOS 11.2, the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus support faster 7.5W wireless charging using compatible third-party wireless chargers. Not all wireless chargers support 7.5W, so it's best to make sure wattage is listed before making a purchase.

In our testing, which compared several wired and wireless charging methods , wireless charging is similar to charging with the standard 5W iPhone charger, but it is slower than other charging methods, such as charging with the 12W iPad adapter and USB-C fast charging.

iphonexchargingtestsocial

7.5W wireless charging is faster than 5W wireless charging in some cases using supported 7.5W chargers, but there are a lot of factors that influence the speed of wireless charging so the difference isn't always evident. Wireless charging is convenient and best suited to overnight charging and situations where you don't immediately need an infusion of power.

Because the Qi standard has been available for several years, there are plenty of wireless charging accessories already available for purchase, plus companies like Belkin and Mophie have made chargers specifically for Apple devices. We have a dedicated roundup reviewing more than a dozen of the wireless chargers currently on the market, and it's worth checking out if you're shopping for a wireless charger for iPhone 8.

qi chargers 1

Qi charging functionality is also available in cafes, restaurants, coffee shops, airports, and other locations around the world, and now that Apple has adopted the standard, Qi charging locations are seeing a more rapid rollout. Qi-based chargers are also available in many newer vehicles , and Apple has released a support document outlining vehicles with compatible chargers. Most should work, but there can be size constraints with the larger iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone 8 features a more advanced 12-megapixel wide-angle f/1.8 camera with a larger, faster sensor that lets in 83 percent more light. Other features include a new color filter and deeper pixels for better color saturation, a wider dynamic range of color, and lower noise in photos and videos.

iphone8designcameras

A new Apple-designed image signal processor introduces faster autofocus in low light, new pixel processing techniques for sharpness and texture, and hardware-enabled multi-band noise reduction. The image signal processor also detects people, motion, and lighting conditions in a scene to optimize photos before they're taken.

iphone8photocapabilities

Optical image stabilization also helps improve photos in low light and when capturing video.

There's a quad-LED True Tone Flash with a Slow Sync feature that combines a slow shutter speed with a strobe pulse for a brighter foreground subject and properly exposed background in low lighting conditions. The flash also offers more uniform illumination for better performance all around.

The iPhone 8 Plus features a dual-lens camera arrangement with the same upgraded wide-angle camera that's in the iPhone 8 paired with an f/2.8 telephoto camera that enables Portrait Mode for the sharp foregrounds and artfully blurred backgrounds normally only possible with a DSLR.

With improvements in the iPhone 8 Plus, there's sharper detail, more natural background blurring, better performance in low light, and support for flash.

iphone8rearcamera

New to Portrait Mode in the iPhone 8 Plus is a new Portrait Lighting feature that lets you add studio quality lighting effects to your images. To enable Portrait Lighting, the two cameras create a depth map of an image, using machine learning techniques to mark the presence of a face and how the light in a scene interacts with the face.

Using that info, the iPhone 8 Plus is able to manipulate the lighting as you take a photo using realtime analysis. Lighting can also be changed in the Photos app after a photo has been taken.

iphone8portraitlighting

Portrait Lighting effects include Natural Light, Studio Light (lights up your face), Contour Light (adds dramatic shadows), Stage Light (spotlights your face against a dark background), and Stage Light Mono (Stage Light, but in black and white).

Apple says the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus support the highest quality video capture ever. Along with the image signal processor that reduces noise and allows autofocus to work more quickly in low light, there's also a new Apple-designed video encoder that enables faster video frame rates and real-time image and motion analysis that can predict changes in content to optimize video encoding algorithms.

4K video recording is available at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second, as is 1080p video recording at 30 or 60 fps.

Slo-mo video support for 1080p at either 120 or 240 fps is also supported.

At the front of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, there's a 7-megapixel f/2.2 aperture FaceTime HD camera for selfies and FaceTime conversations. The camera includes wide color capture, auto image stabilization, 1080p HD video recording, and Retina Flash that uses the display.

iphone8golddesignfront

The iPhone 8 has an 1,821mAh battery, while the iPhone 8 Plus has a 2,675 mAhbattery. That's smaller than the 1,960mAh and 2,900 mAh batteries found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but there is no difference in battery life due to other optimizations.

The iPhone 8 offers up to 14 hours of talk time, 12 hours of internet use, 13 hours of video playback, and 40 hours of audio playback.

iphone8batterylife

The iPhone 8 Plus offers up to 21 hours of talk time, 13 hours of internet use, 14 hours of video playback, and 60 hours of audio playback.

The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X use a " different performance management system " than older iPhones, which means any performance management features may be less noticeable on these devices.

The three devices use a more advanced hardware and software design that's better able to estimate power needs and battery performance, so in the future, they made not need the same processor-throttling performance management features implemented in older iPhones.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are "fast-charge capable," meaning they can be charged to 50 percent battery life in 30 minutes. Fast charging requires the iPhone 8 to be plugged into Apple's 29W, 61W, or 87W USB-C Power Adapters , which are sold alongside its USB-C MacBook and MacBook Pro models.

A USB-C to Lightning cable is also required to go along with the USB-C Power Adapter, and the minimum price for those accessories is $74.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have bene designed with augmented reality apps in games in mind, with the A11 Bionic chip handling world tracking and scenes while the GPU renders realistic graphics. A new image signal processor handles real-time lighting estimation, the cameras have been calibrated for augmented reality with 4K 60 fps support and improved low light capabilities, while a new gyroscope and accelerometer enable more accurate motion tracking.

iphone8augmentedreality

All of these new features are designed to support the wealth of augmented reality apps built with Apple's ARKit and introduced in iOS 11. iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus deliver an unparalleled augmented reality experience and ARKit makes the iPhone and the iPad the largest AR platform in the world.

Redesigned stereo speakers are up to 25 percent louder than the speakers in the iPhone 7 and feature deeper bass. There are two speakers in the device, one at the top and one at the bottom.

iphone8louderspeakers

The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus support LTE Advanced for data transfer speeds up to 600Mb/s. There are more than 20 LTE bands available, which makes the two devices more likely to be able to work with networks in other countries when traveling.

As with the previous-generation iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple is using both Intel and Qualcomm chips, some of which are not compatible with the CDMA networks of Verizon and Sprint in the United States.

T-Mobile and AT&T iPhone 8 models are not compatible with the Verizon and Sprint because they only work with GSM networks. Verizon and Sprint iPhone 8 models. support both GSM and CDMA networks and are compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T.

Models A1863 and A1864 support GSM and CDMA and are designed for Sprint/Verizon, while Models A1905 and A1897 do not support CDMA networks.

Verizon and Sprint devices appear to use Qualcomm's X16 Snapdragon gigabit-class modem, while AT&T and T-Mobile use Intel's XMM 7480 modem. Both modems feature performance improvements and have likely been selected due to their improvements to power efficiency, allowing Apple to cut down on battery size while maintaining the same battery life.

Qualcomm's X16 modem brings 4x carrier aggregation with a total bandwidth of up to 80 MHz and gigabit-level peak theoretical speeds, while the Intel XMM 7480 offers a peak theoretical speed of 600Mb/s and 4x carrier aggregation with two channels limited to 10 MHz for overall bandwidth of 60 MHz.

Ookla LTE speed tests conducted on a range of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models in the United States and a few other countries have demonstrated modest LTE speed improvements compared to previous-generation devices. Improvements appear to be around the 10 percent mark for most users, but up there are speed improvements up to 25 percent in Australia due to a different network structure used in the country.

iphone download speeds

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus support 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi with MIMO. The technology is the same as the Wi-Fi technology in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, with connection speeds that can reach a theoretical maximum of 866Mb/s.

Support for the new Bluetooth 5.0 standard is built into the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Bluetooth 5.0 offers four times the range, two times the speed, and eight times the broadcast message capacity compared to the previous Bluetooth 4.2 standard.

In addition to the Global Positioning System operated by the U.S. government, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus add support for Galileo, Europe's Global Satellite Navigation System, and QZSS, the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System used in Japan.

Galileo support in the new iPhones allows users to benefit from more precise positioning that's able to combine GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo signals. Galileo, says the agency, has a modern signal structure that's able to help users better maintain their position fix when navigating through cities worldwide.

As for NFC, there's a new NFC chip with reader mode support that lets the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus read NFC tags installed in places like retail stores, museums, and more.

TechRadar Verdict

Don’t let the iPhone 8 name fool you – this is very much the iPhone 7S, an incremental upgrade on the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 with a few additions here and there, but nothing to really wow you next to other smartphones in 2018.

  • Verdict and competition

Apple 's iPhone 8 wasn't even the top-of-the-line iOS phone when it came out, but it's still a robust choice for functionality and speed, with a traditional home button packing an easy-to-use Touch ID fingerprint sensor to boot. In short, it's as powerful as the iPhone X at a notably lower cost – which is still impressive years after both phones have come out.

If you're scouring for the best iPhone right now, consider Apple's newest iPhone 12 range, which includes four phones. They're three years newer than the iPhone 8, but a fair bit pricier to match. Thankfully, the price for the iPhone 8 has dropped since it launched.

When Apple announces new iPhones, it typically drops a few aging devices, but the iPhone 8 has manage to survive unscathed, and enjoys the new features in iOS 14 to boot. Apple still considers it a 'budget' entry to the iPhone series for people who want Apple's tech without paying for a high-end phone, though it's now more in line with the new mid-range iPhone SE 2020 . That means it's still very easy to pick up the iPhone 8 from a variety of places at half (or more) off the price tag of the latest iPhone.

The 8 is a legacy iPhone through and through: if you've owned an Apple handset from the iPhone 6 onwards, you'll know exactly what you're getting with this smartphone. There haven't been too many changes over previous models, but for some, that's a bonus.

iPhone pessimists and Android fans (sometimes the same people) will be quick to point out the seemingly minor incremental upgrades over 2016's iPhone 7 , but for those with an iPhone 6S or before, that's less of a problem – especially with the 8's more powerful chipset.

While it may not offer much over its direct predecessor, the iPhone 8 has enough about it to make it an exciting upgrade for those with older iPhone handsets. It also enjoys all the goodies in iOS 14, like widgets, Dark Mode and a range of app speed increases, so you can make the most of your iPhone experience.

Update: The iPhone 8 will be getting iOS 15 . Apple confirmed as much while unveiling the software at WWDC 2021 . The update will land later this year (probably in September) and it brings spatial audio to FaceTime, the ability for Android users to join FaceTime calls, new details for commercial districts and buildings in Apple Maps, a redesigned weather app, and lots more.

iPhone 8 vs iPhone XS

Apple hasn't reinvented the wheel here – if you're craving innovation (within the iPhone bubble, at least) see the new iPhone XS (which has replaced the iPhone X ).

You've probably already heard, but the differences between these two phones is pretty vast - and the first point is the cost. At launch, the iPhone XS started at $999 / £999 / AU$1,579 if you want the 64GB model, where the iPhone 8 now starts at $599 / £599 / AU$979 for the same capacity.

Those prices have gone down since, though the iPhone 8 isn't sold directly by Apple as it's been replaced in the lineup by the iPhone SE 2020, so the pricetag may vary by retailer.

iPhone XS

So what are you getting for that extra money - and is it worth buying? The first thing is the screen - you've got a bezel-less 5.8-inch display with a 1,125 x 2,436 resolution, and it's OLED display technology too – that's superior to the 4.7-inch 750 x 1,334 screen on the iPhone 8. You'll notice a huge difference between the two.

The other big difference to consider is how you unlock this phone - with the iPhone 8, it's Touch ID fingerprint scanning, as it has been for years. With the iPhone XS, you're unlocking with your face, using the nattily-named Face ID.

Touch ID is familiar and fast, while Face ID feels futuristic and recognize faces fast enough – but it's not going to be for everyone doesn't adjust well to drastic change. For those people, the iPhone 8 is going to be far more appealing.

The notch at the top of the iPhone XS contains a camera that allows for Animoji and MeMoji, where emoji can be animated by mapping your face - this feature is locked to the iPhone X, XS, XS Max and XR, and the TrueDepth front camera, so not possible to do on the iPhone 8.

The iPhone XS has dual cameras where the iPhone 8 has a single sensor, which allows for background de-focus and a more comprehensive photographic experience - although this is also possible on the iPhone 8 Plus.

In short: the iPhone 8 is the safe, cheaper option. It does the iPhone things you'd want, and is a solid package you'll recognize all the way back to the iPhone 6.

iPhone 8 price and availability

  • iPhone 8 price (64GB): $449 (£479, AU$779)
  • iPhone 8 price (128GB): $499 (£529, AU$859)
  • Launch price (64GB): $699 (£699, AU$1,079)
  • Launch price (256GB): $849 (£849, AU$1,329)
  • iPhone 8 release date: September 22, 2017

The iPhone 8 set a new bar in terms of cost for Apple's most mainstream handset, as it upped its launch price tag once again.

While the iPhone 8 price at launch was $699 (£699, AU$1,079) for 64GB of storage and $849 (£849, AU$1,329) for the larger 256GB storage option, it has since dropped.

The iPhone 8 price now starts at $449 (£479, AU$779) for the 64GB model, and rises to $499 (£529, $829) for the 128GB variant (somewhere along the way, Apple lowered the max storage down from 256GB). For the best UK contracts, check out our iPhone 8 deals page.

Even though Apple has launched three new generations of iPhones since the iPhone 8's arrival, the handset is still widely available from Apple itself and most major phone retailers.

iphone 8 tour

  •   Glass rear looks and feels great, and enables wireless charging
  •   Front still bezel-heavy and almost identical to past three generations

The iPhone 8 marked the most radical change in iPhone design for three years – but don’t get too excited.

One of the big upgrades Apple has given its new iPhone, and the focus of the design, is the  glass rear – it’s an upgrade over the aluminium body used since the iPhone 5, and its inclusion means a brand-new feature in the shape of wireless charging.

However, in terms of size, shape and look the iPhone 8 uses the same form factor as the iPhone 7, 6S and 6, and from the front it’s almost impossible to differentiate between the four generations of handsets.

The iPhone 8 is a fraction of a millimeter thicker (7.3mm vs 7.1mm), wider (67.3mm vs 67.1mm) and taller (138.4mm vs 138.3mm) than the iPhone 7, but you won’t notice. The point we’re making is that it’s similar... very, very similar.

It’s heavier too, an extra 10g over the iPhone 7, which may be a little more noticeable – but it’s not overbearing, and we were still able to comfortably hold the phone in our palm.

The ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ argument can be tossed around here, and Apple certainly hasn’t had any trouble shifting large quantities of its smartphone in recent years; but in a year when Samsung and LG dramatically slashed the bezels to give us striking, futuristic designs, the iPhone 8 falls flat.

It’s not like Apple has missed this trend – the bezeless iPhone X is testament to the fact that it hasn’t – but it means the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus look ever-more dated against the competition, which now includes a rival in their own camp.

There’s still a camera bump too – this is easily remedied with a case, but for those wanting to show off the new glossy rear of the phone it increases the chance of damage when you place it on a flat surface.

The power/lock key is still easy to hit on the right side of the handset, as is the centralized home button with Touch ID fingerprint scanner located in the bezel below the 4.7-inch display. The mute switch and volume keys reside on the left of the phone, and are again well placed for easy manipulation.

It all works, the design is functional, and it’s not a bad-looking handset – but glance at that price tag and it’s hard not to feel a little short-changed on initial inspection.

A final word on the glass rear too – we prefer the way it looks and feels versus the metal body of the iPhone 7 and co., but it also means it’s even more slippery.

If you’re someone who’s liable to drop their smartphone, the iPhone 8 comes with a high risk warning, so invest in a bumper, as there’s glass to be smashed on both sides now.

Apple says the glass is super-tough, but we’ve found that it does scratch – and if you opt for the Space Grey color it’s also quite the fingerprint magnet. The silver model we reviewed was more forgiving though, which meant less time cleaning it with our shirt sleeve. Apple also offers a striking gold color option and, now, the Product Red iPhone 8 if you held out for the special edition hue.

 Display

  •   4.7-inch Retina HD display, same as the iPhone 7
  •   Apple’s True Tone tech improves colors and contrast

On paper there’s nothing between the iPhone 8 display and the screen on the phone it’s replacing. Both it and the iPhone 7 boast a 4.7-inch IPS display with a 750 x 1334 resolution, giving a 326ppi pixel density.

In fact, it’s the same size and resolution as the iPhone 6, which was launched back in 2014.

While on paper this may seem like the same old story of Apple refusing to be pushed on upping specification, it hasn’t left the display alone completely, adding True Tone display technology to the panel.

What this does is monitor the ambient light around the handset, and calibrate the screen to best suit the lighting conditions you’re in. It results in stronger colors and improved contrast, which does make the display look better than iPhone screens that came before it.

Place True Tone and non-True Tone iPhones side by side and you can see some improvement, but the iPhone 8’s display still doesn’t have quite the same colorful punch, or clarity, as the QHD+ AMOLED display on the Galaxy S8.

iphone 8 tour

The color reproduction is improved as well, with Apple focusing on what actually makes the screen look good rather than pushing the pixels for the sake of the spec sheet... but a boost to Full HD would have made an actual difference to the quality and clarity.

Games and videos look bright and vivid though, and the screen itself is responsive, giving a solid overall experience. It’s hard to knock the screen on its own merits, as it’s only when you put it alongside rivals that it lacks the same clarity.

The fact that the screen is smaller than a lot of flagship rivals also means it’s easier to hold and use one-handed, and we were able to stretch our thumb comfortably to most areas of the screen, which isn’t as easy on the larger iPhone 8 Plus.

The best iPhone 8 deals: pick up this classic iPhone for cheap, now

These iPhone 8 deals are the best on the market today

iPhone 8 deals

The iPhone 8 - a brief look at our thoughts:

iPhone 8 deals are the perfect option If you love what an iPhone delivers but can’t justify shelling out on the latest iPhone 11 range. And with that in mind, we've gathered everything you need to know about this affordable device and listed it below.

Arrow

The iPhone 8 has a relatively low mark-up, given it’s got features and functionality you’d expect from any smartphone today. It’s not cutting-edge like the Huawei P30 Pro or iPhone 11 series, but it does peek cautiously over that precipice.

At around £250 cheaper than the iPhone 11 – and way less than the iPhone 11 Pro Max – it has some neat features: a stylish glass back design which allows wireless charging; the ability to shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second, and the same A11 ‘Bionic’ processor as its successor, the now discontinued iPhone X.

The iPhone 8 is Apple ’s entry-level option, providing a balance of neat features and affordability. So if you’re hung up on the iPhone brand – it’s very similar in design and function to earlier iterations – but want an improved camera, more processing power and très modern touches, then this phone is for you.

Below you can review our comparative chart for the best iPhone 8 deals, contracts and SIM-free prices.

Best iPhone 8 deals

it's the iPhone you know and love “The iPhone 8 is an excellent smartphone. The battery life is decent, the camera improved, and the addition of wireless charging adds convenience. We like the glass-backed design as well, and, thanks to the small screen it's one of the most ergonomic phones we've ever used. There's one X-shaped problem. The iPhone 8 is overshadowed by the more exciting, more expensive brother...the iPhone X .” ★★★★

SIM-free iPhone 8 deals - how much will you spend?

Since it was released over two years ago at an RRP of £699 (for its 64GB version), the iPhone 8 has dropped considerably in price.

Many retailers’ currently sell it for under £500, while you can double your storage space to 128GB if you pay a meagre £50 extra. If you go big and choose the less readily available 256GB version, you’ll see a much bigger jump in cost.

If this still sounds more than your budget can bear, don’t worry. At a quick glance our comparative chart shows you the very best iPhone 8 deals currently on offer.

When is the best time to buy iPhone 8 deals?

Undoubtedly late-September to early-October is a good time to buy, so put a reminder in your Apple Calendar for then.

Why is this? Since 2011, Apple have annually announced the release of their new generation of iPhones in the second week of September, with their latest snazzy handsets available to purchase a week later.

When a new model is released, the cost of older iPhones tends to dive. So the already reasonable price of the iPhone 8 should fall even further in about six months.

At any rate, our above comparative chart offers an up to date collection of the iPhone 8 deals being provided by networks and retailers for contract and SIM-free phones. Keep an eye on it and you might just snag a bargain.

SIM-free or contract: where are the best iPhone 8 deals?

eBay has a number of particularly enticing SIM-free deals on the iPhone 8, for new, unblocked and refurbished models across 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacity. These land around the £300-£400 mark, a fair amount less than retailers’ average of £479, so they’re worth checking out.

If you’re after a new handset with a monthly network contract, they have numerous offers but these fluctuate. Your best bet is to regularly review our chart of collated deals, above. By comparing monthly costs, upfront fees, minutes and data allowances, you can find an iPhone 8 deal that works best for you.

iPhone 8 deals: how much should I expect to pay?

Prices on all phones float up and down constantly, so giving an exact figure is difficult. Due to its age however, it is safe to say the iPhone 8 is nowhere near as expensive as its original RRP of £479.

On contract, expect to pay in the mid-£20/£30 a month range with some offers carrying some upfront costs on top of that.

Best iPhone 8 & iPhone 8 Plus deals

Karen Haslam

Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were discontinued by Apple after the introduction of the iPhone SE – on sale from Friday 24 April. As a result discounts and deals for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are now excedingly rare.

We are finding that many contract deals for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are now out-of-stock. We have also seen the total cost of those deals that are still available has risen compared to what they were before April. And many of the deals we are seeing are for refurbished iPhone 8 models.

However, some companies are still offering the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, so if that’s what you want we are here to help. We’ve scoured the web to find the best iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus deals and contracts to help you decide where to buy.

Should you buy an iPhone 8?

The crucial question is should you buy the iPhone 8? As we discuss here: Should you buy the iPhone 7 or iPhone 8? It will need to be a really good deal to be worth spending your money.

The answer to that question of whether you should buy depends on what the price is.

You should also be aware that while the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus had a high price when introduced in 2017 that price has declined over the years. For example, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus saw a price drop following the unveiling of the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max at the September 2019 Apple Event. So, before it was discontinued, the iPhone 8 cost from £479 and the iPhone 8 Plus was £579.

If the iPhone 8 you are considering is being sold SIM-free for more than £400 we’d strongly advise you to look at the iPhone SE – it’s a much better iPhone with a low price (although not as low here in the UK ).

The new iPhone SE starts at £419 meaning the newer phone (with a better processor) is even cheaper than the iPhone 8 was!

It’s not so simple when it comes to the iPhone 8 Plus – if you want a big screen and a Home Button and you can find an iPhone 8 Plus at a good price then it might be worth buying- we say if, because they are hard to find. Read more about how the iPhone 8 compares to the iPhone SE here . If you want to look at some iPhone SE deals visit this article: Best iPhone SE deals.

Read on for the best deals. Also: Make sure you check out our complete round up of the best Apple deals.

iPhone 8 UK price

The iPhone 8 (reviewed here) was available in two capacities: 64GB and 128GB. There used to be a 256GB model, but this option is now only available at the Apple Refurbished Store (although you might find it available elsewhere – it’s available for £749 on Amazon , for example.)

Prior to the introduction of the iPhone SE in April 2020 Apple sold the various configurations of iPhone 8 for:

Clearly you should not be paying anything like these prices for the iPhone 8 now.

iPhone 8 Plus UK price

Like the iPhone 8 model, the iPhone 8 Plus (reviewed here) also saw a discount in September 2019 and was then discontinued in April 2020.

Here’s what the iPhone 8 Plus was sold for at launch, and then prior to being discontinued after the introduction of the iPhone SE:

Clearly you should not be paying anything like these prices for the iPhone 8 Plus now.

Amazon has its own refurbished line called Amazon Renew , where you can find discounted refurbished or open-boxed tech ranging from laptops, computers, tablets to cameras, TVs and of course phones. While iPhone 8 devices ( or 8 Plus ) are not Apple certified refurbished, they are carefully checked by Amazon’s technicians and come with a 1-year supplier’s warranty. You can pick up a renewed iPhone 8 from £263.80 from Amazon and iPhone 8 Plus for £325 (although that’s now out-of-stock).

You can also find refurbished iPhone 8 at  Mobiles.co.uk  and  Envirofone .

Very nice phone

I upgraded from apple iPhone 5S to iPhone 8, and I like it fine so far. My 5S was a beautiful gold color and while the 8 calls itself "gold" it looks more "flesh tone" to me. It doesn't make much difference because I keep it in a secure case all the time anyway. The iPhone 8 operates the same way as the 5S so there's no learning curve. It's sleek, fast and impressive. Mine has 64 GB,same as the 5S, so there's plenty of storage. I've had the phone less than a month so I'm still in the testing and discovering stage. Cameras seem to work well, and what few I've taken have been good, including a few in low light. I look forward to testing this out more in future. There was a lot of ballyhoo about the iPhone 8 and upwards lack of an earphone jack but a little adapter was included with my 8, and it works fine. Just plug one end onto your ear buds or whatever and plug the other end into the phone's charging port and it's fine. Don't know what all the fuss was about. The screen is bright and easy to read with a plethora of personal adjustments available in settings. The phone's speaker sound is much better than on the 5S. Calls are easy to make and voices are clear and easy to understand. The phone charged up pretty fast using an iPhone quick charge cable, but there's a quick charge pad available that Apple doesn't include with the phone. You just lay the phone down on that pad and it charges. Switching phones was easy and didn't take very long. I backed up my 5S to iCloud, then powered up the new phone and followed set up instructions. That was fast and easy then all I had to do was select the backup files I'd just created on my old phone. After a few minutes everything on my old 5S was transferred onto my new 8. No cables, no hooking up to a laptop or PC, no going back and forth. Just easy as pie. My new phone has everything that was on my other phone including all my contacts, pictures, notes, apps, everything. Like magic. Of course it's done through WiFi. One caution: the phone is glass front and back. It's pretty but it's also VERY slick and easy to drop. I recommend both a protective screen cover and some sort of life-proof case [I'm using Zizo Bolt for iPhone 8) ready to put on your new phone the minute you get it. All-in-all, I've been satisfied with my iPhone 8, especially since I found a killer deal on it, and it should serve me well for several years. Time will tell. But I do recommend it.

Best small screen phone....

This is the best small screen phone out there - if you are someone who wants a phone that can be operated using just one hand, this is the last one out there. The iPhone X is a similar form factor but has a 5.8" screen - which is bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus, not necessarily one handed operation. For someone coming from an iPhone 6 series, the iPhone 8 is a big step up in performance. It is absolutely silky smooth and the GSM+CDMA version is the one to buy - with the Qualcomm modem. While bezel-less phones are the biggest rage these days - this phone represents the best iteration of a bezel phone with TouchID. The display even though is low on pixel count - is still a big step up from the previous iPhone and still looks fantastic on all videos and photos. TouchID is even faster than before. Camera is also better than the iPhone 6, 6S and 7. It is a single lens camera, but in my opinion it isn't that big a difference unless all the pictures you take are in low light or in other words it isn't a deal breaker. All the iOS 11 features work great on this phone (iPhone 6 with a new battery is still slower) and the newer features like wireless charging are nice additions. The glass back does make it easier to shatter on a drop - so you definitely need a case. The glass phone is heavier - but I tend to like that. Summing up - if you want to stay in iOS (for iMessage, FaceTime etc.) this is the best small size phone for the price and the blazing fast performance. At the price point of $699 (which is inching up almost every year) - I don't think you can beat this to stay in the iOS ecosystem.

Slide in my front pocket, go to work and use on the fly.

I like Siri - information is easy as one sentence spoken and data is gathered automatically. I like the thumb recognition - a single touch password. I like it's time track - how much I spend looking at the small glass screen for social networking, messaging and more features that compiles a history of my interest. The quality of the product is superior as compared to my personal use of other similar product brand I used in the past. Learning how to use it is a little complicated though and I need a proficient user to instruct me how to use it and once I know it becomes easy to recall, navigate and make it's use very beneficial and productive. And I am just using it's basic function. There are more to learn, more apps to get familiarize with but for now as a basic and low power user, voice, text messaging and internet browsing are more than enough for me to make use of it as my primary information tool next to my computer.

Good Solid iPhone.

This iPhone 8 is awesome. It fits my hand perfectly, works fast and connects with all my other apple devices seamlessly. It doesn't have all the features of the iPhone X, like face unlocking , but that's no big deal it steal has a fingerprint reader. It's form factor is the same as iPhone 7 and a lot of cases and whatnot that fit the 7 will fit the 8 just as well. It has a glass front and back, so it's very slippery and is a fingerprint magnet. For me a case is a must ! With 256gb of memory you can load it up and not have to worry about running out of storage. Battery life hasn't been too bad. I can get a whole day easily, but i'm a moderate user and don't play games on my phone, an iPhone 8 Plus would be better for that anyway. All that being said, This is a good solid iPhone. One of Apples best!

Apple classical iPhone

The iPhone 6 Plus and 7. 7 plus was Apple biggest step in leading the smart phone maker with worldwide acceptance of apple technology and physical form factor of their iPhone. iPhones 8 8 plus is the last model has the classical looks of it original. The X model are the transition of a new arena. Apple still the leader in the market with high end top technology and quality, that was Apple strong hold which the competitions can not achieve, but Apply failure in capture the low end markets. They have biggest problems now with the introduction of the XR, The iPhone XR supposedly the highest volume sale because the products were addressed the middle price below it current top products,

For the empty promises, Screen shots always

This is the second 8 that I have ordered (the first one not from this vendor). The first vendor actually changed the page to say that they may have slight cracks in the screen but would not effect the operation of the phone, well let me just say that you could not give me a phone with a cracked screen. Needless to say I sent it back and found this vendor. Let me tell you, so far this vendor is everything that other was not and nothing that they were.

Great phone

The phone is in great shape. I ordered the red phone with 256gb. I've had it for a week now and the battery works great. The screen shows no signs of scratches. The corners of the phone has a couple of dings, possibly from the phone being dropped. I expected drastic notable damage for a 7/10 phone. I am very happy with it.

Switching from an Android to an iPhone is not that easy for me

Since it is my first iPhone and I have had Android ever since I got a cell phone so this is very difficult for me to learn I don't like it much yet. Once I figure out how to work it I know I will like it. I ordered a manual for it and hopefully that will help

Highly recommend.

It did take a while to set up but what doesn't these days. But most everything transferred over from my IPhone 6 easily. It did actually encourage me to clean things up. I am happy with IPhones but just needed more space to download music, etc. Very happy with the camera quality as well.

iPhone 4 To iPhone 8 upgrade

The battery life depends on how you the user operate your phone. If you run multiple applications simultaneously, browsing the internet, and general setting are not delimited for better privacy then possible your battery will decrease faster. However, in general, the iPhone 8 is an pretty reasonable cellphone.

Not a great choice

It was not what I expected overall not a good choice for me

Small phone same features as a apple 8 plus

Its working fine but i always stay safe by the extended warranty.

How to hide your number on iPhone

Knowing how to hide your number on iPhone means you can make an anonymous call

iPhone 14 in hand

There are many circumstances in which knowing how to hide your number on iPhone can prove useful. Perhaps you’re calling a company and you don’t want them to have a log of your number or maybe you’re using a personal phone for a work-related call and fear the person you’re calling may use your number to call out-of-hours. Hiding your number can also reduce the number of spam calls you receive and help you to retain your privacy.

Whatever the reason, your number is your own and you don’t have to give it out to anyone if you don’t want to. In this guide, we’re going to show you two methods of hiding your number that are both equally effective. They’ll work on any model of iPhone, too, so you don’t need to be using the latest iPhone 14 Pro to take advantage.

So, let’s take a look at how to hide your number on iPhone.

How to hide your number on iPhone using the keypad

This method will entail you entering someone’s number manually rather than go via your list of contacts.

1. Open the Phone app keypad

How to hide your number on iPhone

When you’re ready to call someone,  open the iPhone app  and  tap Keypad  at the bottom of the screen.

2. Enter *67

How to hide your number on iPhone

Now  dial *67  (including the asterisk) and  enter the number  that you wish to dial.  Tap the green phone button  to connect. Your number or contact details will not be displayed to the person receiving your call.

How to hide your number on iPhone via the Settings

This method allows you to hide your number permanently, affecting all calls you make.

1. Go to Settings > Phone

How to hide your number on iPhone

Launch the Settings app  on your iPhone then scroll down and  tap Phone .

2. Select Show My Caller ID

How to hide your number on iPhone

Now look within the section called Calls and  tap Show My Caller ID .

3. Toggle off Show my Caller ID

How to hide your number on iPhone

Simply  toggle off Show my Caller ID . You can repeat these steps and  tap the switch  to turn it back on again if you decide you don’t want to hide your number any more.

And there you go. You now know how to hide your number on iPhone using the keypad. But there’s more. Why not also learn  how to record phone calls on an iPhone ? Or learn  how to put a call on hold on iPhone . You can also discover  how to block unknown callers on iPhone  and  how to enable Voice Isolation on iPhone .

‘Is She Sure?’ How the Breeders Joined Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts Tour.

The ’90s alt-rock icons hit the Madison Square Garden stage for the first time Friday night, after the 21-year-old pop star invited them to join her on the road.

A woman in a buttoned-up jean jacket and black knit hat sits beside a woman in a dark top, a man in a sports jersey shirt and a woman in an orange plaid shirt.

By Jenn Pelly

Olivia Rodrigo remembers her life in two parts: before she heard the Breeders’ “Cannonball,” and after, she told the crowd at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, when her Guts World Tour arrived in New York.

And that is how the ’90s alt-rock idols came to play the New York arena for the first time last week, 31 years after that song from their platinum 1993 album, “Last Splash,” charted on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Rodrigo’s camp initially approached the Breeders in September about opening some dates on the tour supporting her second album, “Guts .” “My first reaction was, Wow, that seems kind of odd,” the band’s bassist, Josephine Wiggs, said in an interview. “But after I’d thought about it for a while, I thought, ‘That’s actually really genius.’”

Kim Deal, the singer-guitarist who leads the band with her twin sister, Kelley, said she was surprised when they got the invite. “I’d heard ‘Drivers License,’ and I liked that a lot,” she said, referring to Rodrigo’s breakout 2021 smash.

Kelley wondered if it might be a mistake. “I thought, ‘Is she sure? Do they really mean us?’”

But Rodrigo made her enthusiasm clear when the shows were confirmed, reaching out personally to share her excitement. “She texted each one of us individually,” Kelley recalled.

“And said, ‘Really happy to hear that you’re going to do this,’” Wiggs added. “Very classy.”

Aside from Kim, who played Madison Square Garden in 1992 when her earlier band, Pixies, opened for U2, no one in the group had ever performed at the venue before. Kim hadn’t been back since, and said she had no memory of that previous gig: “I usually remember the bad shows, so it’s a good thing that I really don’t remember that one.”

With the first date in the books, the Breeders spent part of Saturday afternoon glimpsing Rodrigo’s soundcheck — she was belting “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” to an empty arena — and then briefly chatting with her. “So easy to talk to!” Kim reported as the Breeders headed up to the stage to adjust their own amps and pedals. The lights were up; two men vacuumed the previous night’s pink and purple star-shaped confetti.

“How about we do a piece of ‘Cannonball,’ like when everything comes in?” Kim asked the band, which also includes the drummer Jim Macpherson. They had already tested the distorted ahh-ooohh-ahh vocalizations that open the song. Kim blew a whistle to emulate the record’s microphone feedback.

Rodrigo was born a decade after the release of “Cannonball,” but the 21-year-old heard it as a teenager and remembers “instantly falling in love with the Breeders,” she wrote in an email. “I thought Kim was the coolest girl in the world,” Rodrigo said. “I’m very inspired by them and everything they stand for. They are absolutely iconic, and playing these shows with them has been a surreal honor.” (The Breeders have joined the tour for four shows at the Garden that wrap on Tuesday, and four more at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles later this summer.)

Mischief, wryness, confidence and camaraderie feel encoded into the poised riffs and bass line of “Cannonball,” and it’s easy to imagine girls gently headbanging along to it for eternity. Rodrigo went louder and crunchier on “Guts,” long inspired by artists who are “not trying to recreate a version of rock music that guys make,” as she told The New York Times last year.

Soundcheck proceeded like a supercut. “Should we do half of ‘Do You Love Me Now’?” Kim asked before crashing the song open and letting its twin harmonies ring out. “A little piece of ‘Drivin’ on 9’?” signaling the aching country tune. “Should we throw in ‘Gigantic’?” Kim asked before unleashing the titanic anthem she co-wrote and sang as a member of Pixies. (She dedicated its “big, big love” to Rodrigo during the show.)

Earlier, the band sat in a green room processing its Guts experience so far. Kelley had been impressed by the emotional arc of Rodrigo’s songs the previous night. “I was texting somebody, ‘I’m so empowered right now!’” She later reached out to praise Rodrigo’s voice as “really special,” observing, “Her tone and control are spectacular!”

“She performs with a really good sense of humor,” Kim added.

Wiggs said she could hear some Breeders commonalties in a Rodrigo chord progression, while Macpherson detected a bit of the band in “Jealousy, Jealousy,” from her first album, “Sour.” “The bass riff was almost like a ‘Hag,’ ‘Hellbound’ -ish kind of thing,” he said.

The Breeders expressed shock at how young Rodrigo’s fans were, and the collective decibel of their screams on Friday night. “You’re going to be surprised by how loud it was,” Kelley said. Weren’t their own amps loud, too? “Not louder than 30,000 tweens,” she said.

Kim roasted her bandmates for withholding stage banter the night before. “Looking out at the sea of 7- and 8-year-olds, I had no idea what to say,” Wiggs said, deadpan. “I could just about manage to say something to people who are obviously teenagers. I was like, OK, maybe I’ll try to make eye contact with the dads.”

The Deal sisters are no strangers to parental accompaniment at gigs. “My dad used to have Ray Charles in his headphones, watching us play, when he drove us around in the r.v. with Nirvana,” Kim said, referring to the band’s 1992 tour with what was then the biggest band on Earth. “He’d have his cassette Walkman,” Kelley added. “He was a big supporter, but he’d heard us a million times.”

In Kurt Cobain’s liner notes to Nirvana’s 1992 compilation “Incesticide,” he detailed the recent life experiences that had meant the most to him since “becoming an untouchable boy genius,” including “playing with the Breeders” on the list. “Nirvana and Foo Fighters would really curate their opening bands, which is I think what Olivia is doing in a way, curating new music that she wants fans to get to know,” Kelley said.

Most of the young people watching from the front rows on Saturday were not familiar with the Breeders — who are all in their 50s and 60s — though there were exceptions. “My parents know who they are!” exclaimed an 18-year-old fan named Mack. “My dad said they had some jams back when he was younger. He didn’t know if I would like them, but I trust Olivia.”

Another fan, Elle, 16, was with her father, who saw the Breeders at Lollapalooza alongside Smashing Pumpkins and the Beastie Boys. “For me, this was really cool,” he said. “I don’t know the tour’s other openers as well, but I’ve loved the Breeders since ’94 when I saw them last.”

Rodrigo’s fans were decked out in sparkling skirts, purple bows and platform boots in honor of their heroine, who took the stage in a series of short, glittering skirts. The Breeders are known for more understated sartorial choices. Had they given any thought about to what to wear?

“I sent out a ‘help’ text to a friend of mine,” Kelley admitted. “I said, I’m trying to upgrade my look from my T-shirt and jeans that I typically wear, but staying in my comfort zone. He said, ‘I find glitter or sequins to always be the answer.’ I just waited for him to laugh or something. That was no help to me at all. So I went with a T-shirt and jeans.”

“Like she’s been dressing since seventh grade,” Kim said.

That’s due in part to the fact that The Gentleman saw a 54% surge in viewership from the week prior, tallying 1.86B viewing minutes during this interval.

The Abu Dhabi-backed vehicle that had been on the brink of buying The Daily Telegraph is in detailed talks with Whitehall officials about the structure of an onward sale of the newspaper.

Sky News has learnt that RedBird IMI is negotiating with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport about whether it can convert a call option which constitutes the right to take ownership of the Telegraph and Spectator into shares in the assets prior to their purchase by a new owner.

The telecoms entrepreneur who turned Daisy Group into one of the industry's most successful private companies is closing in on the latest in a string of significant takeover deals.

Matthew Riley, Daisy's chairman, has orchestrated a £215m deal to acquire 4Com , a provider of cloud communications services to more than 17,000 corporate customers, Sky News understands.

City sources said the deal was expected to be signed within days and was likely to hand 4Com founder Daron Hutt a windfall worth more than £100m.

The Financial Conduct Authority has told motor finance firms they need to put funds aside as it continues a probe into the sector.

The City regulator also said many firms are "struggling to promptly provide the data we need" for the investigation.

A review was launched by the FCA earlier this year into whether people could be owed compensation for being charged too much for car loans, following a high number of complaints on historic agreements.

American Express has announced two major changes to its British Airways credit cards which help customers collect Avios points towards flights.

From November, the amount that BA Amex and BA Amex Premium Plus card holders will need to spend every year to get "two-for-one" companion vouchers will rise to £15,000.

That's a £3,000 rise in the minimum annual spend for Amex customers and £5,000 for Amex Premium Plus.

The companion vouchers mean customers can grab a second seat for someone travelling on the same flight, or a 50% discount on the Avios price of a solo flight.

That's not the only change, however, as American Express is also hiking the annual fee for its Amex Premium Plus card from £250 to £300 - an inflation-busting 20% increase.

The fee increase applies from today for new applicants. Existing cardholders will be hit with the rise for renewals from 1 August onwards.

Meanwhile, the US bank said the qualifying spend for companion vouchers will start from 1 November regardless of when membership is renewed.

That means some current customers may need to race to hit the lower minimum spend by 31 October.

American Express told consumer champion Which? that it occasionally makes changes to cardholders' account terms. A spokesperson said the companion voucher "remains an industry-leading credit card benefit", while both cards "continue to provide great value for customers".

Greece has announced a scheme to give "free" holidays to tourists affected by the wildfires that ravaged Rhodes last summer.

More than 20,000 tourists and locals were forced to flee homes and seaside hotels after blazes fanned by strong winds broke out on the island and burned for days in July 2023.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis vowed  last year to offer a one-week free holiday in Rhodes to those whose holidays were cut short.

The country's government has now officially launched the "Rodos Week" scheme, which offers an e-voucher of between €300 and €500 compensation for a week's stay.

The general secretary of Greece's tourism ministry  told  The Guardian that it has been a "very complicated process not least, I think, because we’re the first country in the world to do this".

The amount holidaymakers can claim depends on the rank of the hotel they were originally staying in.

E-vouchers can be claimed during two phases: between now and May 31, and from 10 October to 11 November.

Only those who stayed in hotels are eligible for the scheme, the government said, with Airbnb accommodation excluded.

Yannis Papavasiliou, head of the island's union of hoteliers, said there has been good take up already with over 5,000 holidaymakers enrolling, according to The Guardian.

The airport where you're likely to face the longest delays has been revealed as one of the UK's biggest.

London Gatwick replaced Birmingham to top the list for 2023, with its departures nearly 27 minutes behind schedule, according to Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data.

The West Sussex airport, the second-busiest in the UK behind Heathrow, was hit by air traffic control shortages across Europe last year and also had similar problems in its control tower.

In a statement, Gatwick said it was "working closely with our airline partners to improve on-time performance".

"The majority of cancellations are caused by poor weather, airspace constraints across Europe and inefficient third party ground operations," it said.

Luton airport followed with an average delay of almost 23 minutes, while Manchester took third place at nearly 22 minutes.

In contrast, holidaymakers flying from Belfast City (George Best) had the best experience, with the typical delay there just 12-and-a-half minutes in 2023.

Across all airports, the average delay was almost 20 minutes and 42 seconds - though this fell from 23 minutes and 12 seconds the previous year amid a boom in travel after the pandemic.

CAA director Tim Johnson said the aviation sector needed to "focus on resilience" before summer comes to "keep passenger disruption to a minimum".

All scheduled and chartered departures from UK airports with at least 1,000 outbound flights were included in the analysis, with cancellations excluded.

Naomi Leach, deputy editor of Which? Travel, said the latest figures point to "millions of passengers" experiencing "unacceptably long hold-ups last year".

"This cannot be allowed to become the new normal."

But the Airport Operators Association argued that data doesn't show "any of the context around operating in a global environment".

"Airports work extremely hard to minimise delays while providing a positive, safe and secure experience for passengers," it said.

'You can't get a mortgage with a bad credit rating'

Just how important is keeping on top of your credit score when it comes to buying a home?

For this one, we've got the help of  Emma Steeley , chief executive at borrowing platform Aro.

"The honest answer is that a bad credit rating can stop you from getting a mortgage, and a poor rating can throw some serious hurdles in your path," Emma says.

"Despite this, it's not the end of the road if your credit rating isn't as rosy as you'd like it to be."

What counts as a bad credit score?

"In the worst-case scenario, this will likely mean you've defaulted on or missed payments, and debt has been escalated to the stage where legal action has been initiated," Emma says.

An applicant left with a credit score below 325 is considered "poor" or even "very poor" by Equifax.

A game of risk for lenders

Before we talk about what your credit score will do to an offer rate, it's important to understand the impact that the loan-to-value (LTV) ratio can have on this too, as it heavily influences the interest rate offered by lenders.

Your LTV ratio is used by lenders to decide how risky it is to lend you the money to buy your home. It compares how much of the property you will own - ie, how much deposit you can put down in relation to the property’s value - to how much they will need to lend to you to make up the difference.

"The lower your LTV ratio, the better the mortgage rate you're likely to be offered - the higher the LTV, the higher the risk for the lender," Emma says.

"A higher credit score can help mitigate the impact of a high LTV, potentially resulting in a more favourable interest rate."

What to do if you have a poor credit score

The obvious answer here is to try to improve your credit score, by building your file with credit builder loans and/or secured cards.

"While the options may be limited and less favourable for those with 'poor' credit scores, they do exist," Emma says.

Those are usually longer or more expensive deals, however.

The good news is most lenders don't solely use credit scores as a measure of creditworthiness.

"Best practice will see lenders using a blended scorecard, that overlays behavioural data and back book financial performance with credit data to get a much more accurate assessment of an individual's payback ability," Emma says.

However, for people with a "very poor" rating (below 226, according to Equifax), the number of offers you are likely to receive shrinks to almost zero.

Myth or must?

It's undeniable that a good credit score gives you more flexibility when it comes to getting a mortgage.

"Importantly, credit scores can be improved," Emma says.

"Those who take a proactive approach to managing their finances and understand how to rebuild their credit score will find themselves presented with a wider array of loan options."

A good credit score is a money must.

Messy neighbours can slash tens of thousands of pounds off the value of your home, according to new research.

A survey of estate agents by Churchill Home Insurance found that more than four in five (82%) believe it's important for homeowners to chat to their neighbours about their poorly maintained property before putting the house on the market.

Some 22% said an overgrown garden is likely to have the biggest impact, while 20% said rubbish or junk in the driveway or front garden could affect the cost.

Overflowing gutters (20%), several cars parked on or around the property (19%) and garden ornaments and statues (18%) also cut the value of neighbouring homes, estate agents said.

The research also revealed that some sellers deliberately time viewings to make their houses seem more attractive, avoiding issues next door such as loud music or pets - or even avoiding the neighbours altogether.

Sarah Khan, head of Churchill home insurance, said: "First impressions count when it comes to selling homes, with the sale price often negatively impacted when the neighbouring property looks scruffy.

"Investing a few hundred pounds in a gardener to tidy up next door's front garden could pay huge dividends when it comes to selling your home, a win-win for both you and your neighbour."

What do estate agents say?

We spoke to people in the industry about the risk of having messy neighbours when it comes to moving - and what their advice is for those seeking to avoid any effect on their sale.

James Stevenson, south and south west area director at Foxtons,  agrees it can make the process more difficult.

"Gardens that are unkept or full of clutter, pavements and frontages that have fallen into disrepair or where your neighbours are showing little care for their property are all a negative flag for buyers," he said.

"Additionally, any disruption that has become a neighbourly dispute must be declared to prospective buyers, so it's always better to have a great relationship with your neighbours and try to resolve any existing issues amicably."

Messy neighbours are "frustrating" at any time, but become a "more pressing issue" when it comes to putting a home up for sale, says  Sarah Cull, senior associate director Strutt & Parker Salisbury.

"Before you get your own gardening shears out, the first step should always be to try to have a frank conversation with your neighbour - you can even explain that you're looking to sell and you want to give prospective buyers the best first impression possible."

If a friendly chat doesn't do the job, Sarah suggests heading to a local garden centre to pick up some screening.

"Where the neighbour's garden is considered a nuisance - for example there's lots of rubbish which could attract pests, or weeds are damaging groundwork - then you can report it to your local council," she added.

The continued return to growth with GDP - a measure of everything produced in the economy - up 0.1% has been welcomed by markets.

The FTSE 100 - the index of most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange - is up 0.86% and near its all-time high.

Pushing up the index is Fresnillo, the precious metals mining company with its share price up 6.91%.

Potentially putting a dampener on the global economy is the fact oil prices have remained elevated, with a barrel of the benchmark Brent crude oil costing $90.57.

Currency wise, one pound buys $1.256 and €1.17.

Jeremy Hunt says the latest economy figures are a "welcome sign".

The chancellor said GDP growth of 0.1% shows "that the economy is turning a corner, and we can build on this progress if we stick to our plan".

"Last week our cuts to national insurance for 29 million working people came into effect across Britain, as part of our plan to reward work and grow the economy," he said in a statement.

The UK economy has grown slightly for the second month in a row, official figures show.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew just 0.1% in February, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

It's another signal that the UK economy is working its way out of recession.

Growth of 0.3% was recorded last month - and that figure has been revised upwards from a previous estimate of 0.2%.

A recession was declared in February after data showed two quarters of economic contraction.

If the economy expands for three months, the UK will be officially out of recession.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without emptying your wallet.

In this series every Friday, we're trying to find the cheapest ways to identify the healthiest options in the supermarket.

We've asked  Sunna Van Kampen,  founder of  Tonic Health ,  who went viral on social media for reviewing supermarket products in the search of healthier choices, for his input.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, rather how to get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

This time we're looking at yogurt - specifically the differences between some of the most popular: authentic Greek and Greek-style.

"You have to watch out for Greek-style yoghurt masquerading as the authentic variety," Sunna says.

Typical Greek-style yoghurt has around 4.6g of sugar per 100g, he says.

But swivel your cart towards the authentic Greek yoghurt, and you'll find only 3.3g per 100g.

"That's an impressive 28% reduction in sugar content, or a teaspoon of sugar a day if you have a 300g portion."

To be clear - this isn't added sugar, this is the naturally-occurring kind from lactose in the milk.

Protein is the building block of our bodies, and something around 66% of Brits don't get enough of.

"Authentic Greek yoghurt boasts around double the protein content of its Greek-style cousins - with branded versions having 9g per 100g compared to just 3.7g per 100g," Sunna says.

This means in a typical 300g bowl, you are getting 27g of protein versus only 11.1g in Greek-style.

Here's the bottom line - it is more expensive, but the investment is worth it, Sunna says.

  • Greek-style yoghurt – supermarket own label – 22p per 100g
  • Authentic Greek yoghurt - supermarket own label – 46p per 100g
  • Authentic Greek yoghurt – branded versions – 50-58p per 100g

"Okay, so we are talking double the price, but you get what you pay for with double the protein," Sunna says.

Think of it this way - every 300g bowl is an extra 72p per day for nearly 16g of extra protein and nearly 30% less sugar.

"Far cheaper than what you'd pay for a protein bar with the same amount of protein," Sunna notes.

The key here: value isn't exclusive to the price tag - and investing in your health is more important than ever.

So, next time you're navigating the dairy aisle, remember that not all yoghurts are created equal - opting for authentic Greek yoghurt can be a small but effective step towards a healthier diet without breaking the bank.

The nutritionist's view - from  Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food, and health sciences at Teesside University...

Yes, absolutely for a source of protein.

Yogurt is better than protein bars and powders that are full of protein, as they come along with a long list of other potentially artificial ingredients that are not necessary.

If we are looking at yoghurts from a health perspective, then you're definitely wanting to look for this style - natural, Greek, low sugar or sugar free but not fat-free!

Families should avoid investing in sugar-laden yoghurts that do not serve any nutritional purposes.

If someone is eating yoghurt specifically as a source of protein, then there are much better sources like beans and lentils which are affordable and will provide other additional benefits including fibre.
