5 Travel Planning Apps for Free City Guides and Recommended Itineraries

The next time you travel to a new city, check out these sightseeing recommendation tools that other guidebooks might overlook.

The internet is your best travel buddy today. The next time you travel to a new city, check out these apps and websites. You will find offbeat attractions, walking tours, and sightseeing recommendations that guidebooks might overlook.

These apps assume you have already picked your travel destination, so you are now researching what to do once you get there.

From renowned brands offering city guides to local experts giving their insights, there's a healthy mix for every type of traveler. Plus, you don't have to research in advance every time. Some of these tools will dynamically recommend items based on your current location.

1. Visit A City (Web, Android, iOS): Readymade Itineraries Up to One Week

A travel agent will whip up an itinerary of where you should go, what you should see, and so on. Visit A City already has that prepared, ranging from a day's plan to seven days worth of sights and attractions in most tourist destinations.

Each city has multiple guides that cover major sights, tours, and activities. For example, if you pick Barcelona, you'll get a 3-day guide for top attractions, or a 5-day guide for visiting Barcelona with kids, and so on. There's a surprising amount of variety on the website, letting you choose exactly the type of trip you want.

Any itinerary you choose will open with a map and a day-by-day schedule. You can remove or add items, and buy tickets in advance. Other tabs recommend alternative things to do and attractions. The full itinerary can be printed for free, or you can download it for offline use on the Visit A City app.

The website and the app are easy to use and shockingly thorough. Even if you're someone who loves planning your own trips, use one of Visit A City's itineraries as a starting point to make your job easier.

2. WhatsHere (Android, iOS): Map of Nearby Tourist Attractions

WhatsHere is a map-based travel guide. Search for a place or let it zoom into your current location, and the app will recommend myriad tourist attractions. As simple as that seems, there are a few features that make it even better.

For starters, WhatsHere has a list of categories to narrow down the places of interest to you: historic, museum, tourist attraction, landmark, trail, UNESCO heritage spots, and so on. Choose one or all, and see them in list form. Each place has multiple tags and you can see how far it is from your current location.

Alternately, open the Map view, which is where WhatsHere really shines. Each pin has a different color and icon, depending on its category. Tap it to get a popup with a brief description about why it's important, and to see how far it is from you. You can bookmark the place, view pictures from others, and even get a quick link to its Wikipedia entry.

Download: WhatsHere for Android | iOS (Free)

3. Spotted By Locals (Web, Android, iOS): Non-Touristy Guides From Locals

Spotted By Locals currently has guides for only 79 cities, spread across Europe, parts of Asia, and North America. But if a city you're visiting is featured on the website, then you won't get a better guide for offbeat tourism.

If you've hosted a tourist in your hometown, you know that there are must-see places that every travel agent will recommend, and a few local secrets that you'd like them to see. That's what makes this special. Each city's guides are written by locals who have lived there for some time.

You will find articles across a range of categories, or view them chronologically. The latter might be better since you get a local's recent recommendation, rather than a place they visited a long time ago.

Spotted By Locals also has mobile apps. While the app is free, each city's guide costs $3.99 to download. In return, you get offline maps and information, but you can see all of the same data on the website for free.

Download: Spotted By Locals for Android | iOS (Free)

4. Awayn (Android, iOS): Visually Rich Guides and Free Magazine

Awayn is a design-focused app with a good mix of features to find travel inspiration. Among the highlights is the free Awayn digital magazine, packaged as part of the app, which tackles one type of travel or region, and includes an interview too.

On the main page of the app, you can search for a city, browse by country, or look at "featured adventures" as recommended by Awayn's community. These featured adventures are actually quite cool and a good place to discover something new. I also liked the idea of browsing by country instead of a city because you might come across an activity that alters your itinerary.

If you like to browse by location, head to Map to find your current GPS coordinates. Awayn will highlight points of interest and travel attractions in your vicinity. The app deserves credit here for recommending places that you wouldn't find in most other travel guides.

Download: Awayn for Android | iOS (Free)

5. CityBook (Android, iOS): Booking.com's Travel Guide

CityBook is the new kid on the block, a product of one of the best hotel booking websites Booking.com . Currently, it hosts city guides for only London, Amsterdam, and Paris, but the number of cities will increase with time.

Depending on the time of the day, CityBook will suggest activities. For example, if you check the app in the morning, you'll find breakfast recommendations. Later in the day, it'll give you evening activities, shows, or bars. It's a nice mixture of historical and cultural places, food and drinks, and events.

The app is a combination of recommendations for places to visit as well as a ticketing office for places like museums. You can add places of interest to your "bucket list" and tick them off as you go about your travels.

Get a Truly Local Experience

One of the joys of traveling is to discover how people from a different culture or lifestyle go about their daily lives or celebrate major events. Most hotels and tour packages will offer some activities, but these are often tourist traps and don't feel genuine.

Instead, as the internet breaks down barriers, use an app. Whether it's enjoying a home-cooked meal with a local or partying with a native, check out these cool travel apps to get a truly local experience .

The 9 Best Travel Apps for Exploring Cities

You’ve landed somewhere brand new, and you’re ready to explore the new city, but you have absolutely no idea where to start. This is where your trusty smartphone comes in. There are loads of cool traveling apps you can use to help you find awesome spots around town. Here are 9 of our favorite apps for discovering new places in unfamiliar surroundings, beyond what the more well-known travel guides have to offer.

1) Spotted By Locals

No one knows a city like the locals do—at least that’s the idea behind the tidy Spotted By Locals app. It uses suggestions put forward by hand-picked spotters who know the best places in town and the areas you can ignore.

The app grew out of a city blog covering Amsterdam and now has guides for 66 cities across the world. You do have to fork out a few dollars ($3.99) for each guide, but that gives you all future tips added to the location as well, and it works offline.

Free, Android and iOS

One of the first things you might want to do in your new location is go for a run, but finding a good path can be tough. RunGo hits the rather neglected intersection of fitness apps and travel apps by giving you the best local routes to take in nearby sights.

There are featured routes in major cities and the option for users to upload their own preferred paths around town for others to benefit from. If you want to check out the interesting places in a city and top up your fitness at the same time, RunGo is for you.

3) Musement

Musement wants to be your perfect pocket guide no matter where in the world you happen to be. It covers neighborhoods, attractions, restaurants, bars and concerts, and covers 350 destinations worldwide, with “tailored local content” in 25 of the biggest cities.

There is a commercial element to the app in the form of event and reservation bookings, but it’s not pushy, and the app itself is clean and tidy one that’s simple to navigate around. Perfect for exploring, but as usual be wary of booking anything through a third party.

Maybe you don’t want to see any local sights in the place you’ve just landed in, and instead you just want to make a few new friends. If that’s the case, Meetup can help. After all, you can always ask your new buddies about the most interesting spots in town after you’ve been introduced.

The app is essentially a listing of local events and groups, so you can browse for something that looks like it’s up your street (literally and figuratively) and then get connected to like-minded souls in the area. Alternatively, get your own meetup started.

Simply put, Nearify plugs you into local events and gigs that you’re likely to be interested in. You can have a browse through what’s happening, pick something of note, and wander along to learn more about the city you find yourself in (and perhaps make a friend or two).

There are stacks and stacks of categories in here, covering all types of music, comedy, eating out and drinking experiences, so you certainly shouldn’t be short of something to do unless you’re in the middle of nowhere. You can get alerts about events in advance too.

6) Like A Local

Like A Local is another app that wants to bring you the best tips from the people that live there—as you may have guessed from its title—and it’s one of the most polished options out there, as well as one of the most comprehensive in terms of the cities it covers.

The focus is on fun stuff to see and do in your city of choice, and while there are some touristy selections here (which you might not mind), there are plenty of relatively off-the-beaten-track options to explore too. Individual city guides will cost you $1.99 each.

7) Instagram

You’ve probably heard of Instagram before, but have you ever used it as a travel aid? Tap on the search icon from the front screen, open up the Places tab, and you can browse through all of the popular and recent photos people are posting to a certain location.

Sure, you’re going to get a lot of selfies in there, but you might be surprised at how many interesting views, locations, bars and restaurants you uncover as well (everyone loves posting food pictures). It’s an alternative way to stumble across some places of note.

8) Apple Maps

While we’ve avoiding mentioning the usual travel apps pretty much everyone already knows about in this list, it’s worth ending with a nod to Apple Maps and Google Maps. New ‘exploration’ features are being added to these stock apps on a fairly regular basis.

Apple Maps for iOS 10 has a cleaner look and new filters for finding nearby places of note more easily: search for pretty much anything (like “bars”) then swipe across the bottom of the results list to narrow down your search (“wine bars” and “sports bars” for example).

9) Google Maps

Some Google Maps users are seeing a revamped ‘explore’ section that may well have gone live by the time you read this, but whatever version you’re on, it works really well: tap the GPS icon, then the Explore link at the bottom, to see what’s in your current vicinity.

The beauty of this Google Maps feature is the way you can drill down into “where the locals go” or “seats outside” or “great beers” depending on the feedback and reviews left by other Maps users. It can help you uncover spots you wouldn’t otherwise come across.

So much potential...

So much potential, but not there yet. I love the concept of creating my own tour, but until the ability to EASILY add sites that are not on their preloaded lists (current method not intuitive at all) and the ability to easily bring up a map on a mobile device that shows the path we have chosen are added, it can only be used as an additional reference, not on its own. My dream would be an app that turns my own custom walking tour into a Rick Steves type walking tour. Rick Steves has the walking tour concept down pat. To the developers, keep working on this - you have a good thing going and you are part way there. Even a more visible note telling folks they can add anything they wish if they know the address would be a big help. For instance, I changed our hotel to the cruise port by entering the cruise port address into the hotel address but I had to figure that out on my own. Nothing told me it was an option.

Best travel itinerary app out there!

I’m planning a trip to London and Paris in a couple of weeks. After trying to use Trio Advisor, Yelp and Google Trips without full satisfaction, I stumbled upon this while doing a Google Search. Wow! VisitACity and its website is incredible!!! You can use their itineraries or create your own from scratch, and it calculates the distance and time between points whether you walk or take transit. You can also add notes for each stop, which is super cool for noting special menu items, places to take the best photos, or whatever you want to remember about that place when you go. I am in love with VisitACity! I really can’t believe it only has 7 ratings.

By Hihodado

VisitACity was everything you need for your trip. You are given suggestions of itineraries, the number of days and how packed you want it to be. All the information you need is there-opening times, tickets, background information, etc. The planning was easy in that you could add or delete places, see everything on a map and make adjustments. Then when you get to your destination and start using VisitACity brings up a menu and lets you choose from a variety of maps ex Apple maps, Google maps, Waze, etc. you just pick your map and off you go. The only thing I found frustrating was if you decide to skip one of the things on your itinerary and go to the next, it doesn’t allow you to do that because it’s not the time that you scheduled. You have to go into the website and change it. I’ve told and shown all of my friends about VisitACity and they are amazed. Great job, VisitACity does it all. Your trip is organized so you aren’t wasting time figuring out what to do next. We loved it!

By prauubly

Good and helpful for trip planning!

I love this site and I shared it to everyone I know that travels a lot and do not want to go on a tour. It is a good way to plan your day and to search for things to do. They give you the exact calculations of your hotels and the places to see when you are in a foreign country! Used it for 5 years now when we travel to Europe, Asia and everywhere else and it never fails..🤗 I highly recommend it and just remember that you can modify more by using your laptop/computer and have your itinerary email to you so you can open it with no WiFi. you can do it to your CP as well but you can not modify it as much..🤗

What every self planner / frequent traveler needs

VisitACity is amazing for someone who I would call a “drive by” traveler, who travels often and plans their own trip but doesn’t have time To do research and plan. It is a good starting point. Functionality that allows to add your hotel and restaurant Ana then recalculate the best route is fantastic .. the fact that it tells you which sightseeing places are open or closed on the day of your travle is priceless ..handy links to websites to buy tickets for those place is also amazing ... I’ve been thinking this up in my head for so long and when I found this up it was def a EUREKA moment for me.

Dublin with Spectacular Advice

I’ve created several itineraries for different cities using Visit a City, but this is the first I actually used one, this time for Dublin. It worked great! I downloaded an offline copy and have been able to use it throughout my trip. It showed me all the top attractions without pushing the sale of admission tickets. It included a map to everything in my customized itinerary, and when I added my hotel, it included that in the mix. I’m looking forward to using VisitACity for many other cities in the future. If you have a city on your bucket list, it’s even fun to just explore the sights.

By suzytravelsforfun

Invaluable in planning our trip

I have been using VisitACity to plan a trip to three cities. So many benefits: maps, showing where the attractions are so you can more efficiently plan your day, descriptions, which include the attractions ratings, highlights, opening times, recommended time to allocate, ability to find restaurants near the attractions. You can set up your itinerary and plan your day and VisitACity shows how much time it will take to walk between attractions. You can easily change your itinerary, make notes, and add tours or entertainment. I can’t say enough good things about VisitACity!

Incredibly useful and intuitive for trip planning. AMAZING.

I travel quite a bit and am a huge pre-planner - VisitACity has proved to be one of the most useful trip planning resources I’ve ever encountered. The itineraries you start with are great, and then the ability to customize them completely (add your own sights, swap days around, add days, etc) and have VisitACity update all connected info - like alerting you if you’ve moved a sight to a time it’s not open - is SO HANDY. I also really like the maps, and the walking/transit times given between each sight. Please expand to even more cities!

By Radicalrom

Best travel app

I admit I found it much easier to use website to plan the trip then VisitACity . I tried tons of travel planners and this is the best site. Once you have the plan done, you can share it or for me being old school, I printed it for a hard copy. There are areas it can improve on, but compared to other apps, this easy. I had to email them with a technical support and they were awesome. Download it and give it a try, but remember the website is easier to do the initial plan. 5 stars me is odd, but VisitACity deserves it.

By Little gude

Was good but the update is terrible

I made plans for a trip to Barcelona. The night before I’m to leave they completed an update. This deleted only my Barcelona plans and they could not be recovered. I have food allergies and am staying in 2 different hotels. I am redoing my entire 5 day plan and find that I cannot add restaurants twice anymore. I also cannot change/add a different hotel to multiple days. There is no override or way around it that I can find. There may be a way but this occurred at 4:00 PM and I am leaving for the airport at 3:00 AM so I honestly just do not have time to figure it out again. I had used VisitACity before and thought it was fantastic but I’m upset and disappointed with the new layout and limitations as well as the surprise of the lack of carryover from my plans that I had arranged.

By gene1024

Trip to Amsterdam

Just planned a 3 day trip to Amsterdam. this app made it unbelievably simple to plan this trip, choose activities and arrange schedules. Everything I needed was all in one place, no more searching all over the internet. The information and descriptions provided were fantastic resources. The ability to refine and adjust schedules was greatly appreciated. VisitACity also provides great tools (maps, directions, time schedules, etc.) to use on the trip and hopefully make it a super experience. Will review again after I return home.

App not opening

I absolutely love VisitACity. Each time we travel we use it to check things out and plan the itinerary. However, for some reason VisitACity is not loading for the last few days. I tried deleting and uploading VisitACity again and still nothing. I am not sure if other customers experienced the same issue? Update: I didn’t do the latest Iphone update and that was causing the issue. I have since updated to the latest version and now it works.

By Armywifethearmylife

Favorite app of all time!

I have lived in Europe for two years. The first 8 months I spent hours on the computer trying to piece together trips for my family. The first time I used it was London and I refuse to go somewhere and not have a this app plan. It made traveling the underground a snap. this app does all the work for me and I’m not backtracking and wasting time finding out opening hours/days/prices. this app gives me the freedom of easily creating an amazing adventure for my family with minimal time and avoiding the “rabbit hole” of the Internet.

By vritterv

Planning made easy

this app was the first easy, intuitive and helpful apps I used. I tried a handful of planning apps but gave up on the others. this app allowed me to immediately start planning my trip and get excited about it! When I realized that I could add my hotel and it would time walking to and from, I was even more excited about VisitACity. It will also calculate the best day to add an attraction as well as make sure attractions are open. This is a must use for any trip.

Great trip planning app!

I love VisitACity for trip planning. I like that it has all the major city sites, with descriptions that provide useful information about them. Nice that it includes itineraries for different numbers of days and different needs, etc. to give you an idea how much time to allocate for various places and ways to maximize short visits. I wouldn’t characterize it as a “one-stop” place for all your travel needs, but all in all a very handy and useful app.

Love the app overall but could use improvements

I really love that I can plan out my trip with VisitACity and that it also calculates travel time. I think it would be more user friendly if you could just easily rearrange your daily itinerary without having to go through so many steps to do so. I also wish there was a way I could add notes to each event. And for the events that I add that don’t have a name, such as the Airbnb I’m staying at, I would like to be able to edit the title. Other than that I think it’s a great app.

Great planning tool, but needs some fine tuning

I started using this app to plan for a European trip that takes us to several major destinations. I found VisitACity intuitive & easy to use. It has various levels of assistance with itinerary suggestions and tour options that can be customized to suit ones’ schedule & activity level. I did find that VisitACity stalled a few times and I had to restart in order to escape a few pages. I think with some fine tuning VisitACity can be a very valuable travel tool.

By maritravels

itinerary & maps can go offline

Very useful in mapping out the major sites to see and then downloading these for offline use. The site includes info on what to look for in the site, days open, hours, admission fees, and walking distance to next site, with offline map to keep from getting lost. They also sell organized tours for those who don't want to plan their own sightseeing. No obnoxious pop ups or ads.

By Teemoe20

Just what I have been looking for

I have been looking for an app to track my trips and add places that I would like to go. VisitACity gives me ideas by setting up itineraries for me and allows me to adjust them to fit my needs. One thing that I would like to see is the ability to change the actual times. We made reservations for dinner and I may I am not able to change the time for that particular item without adjusting the length of the time I’m at other places.

Excellent Tour App

I’ve always used VisitACity when traveling. Very useful in USA, Europe and Japan. I hope they will add other tourist attractions other than mostly museums because museums cost money. I also request that they add places where to find food ranging from expensive to cheap prices, stores nearby where to buy day to day needs and hotels near tourist attractions. Also weather conditions for each cities. Overall I like it it’s the best travel app imo.

I’ve been using VisitACity for 10 years, I travel A LOT, I adjust times, dates and activities and attractions w easy. Usually I am the lead in my groups and people are always so impressed and satisfied. I set activities that are near eachother for same day, usually hitting one region or area per day. Very seldeom I use public transport, usually all by foot and the map option allows me to plan accordingly.

The 9 best apps for exploring cities

How to get around—and see—the city with fresh eyes

An illustration of a hand holding a phone in front of a row of buildings in a city.

There might be an app for everything these days, but the sheer volume of choices means that it can be hard to decipher which apps are actually useful. To help you figure out the must-download apps for urbanites, we’ve researched a slew of options and curated this list of nine.

Some apps help cyclists get from point A to B efficiently, while others reveal hidden recommendations from in-the-know neighborhood experts. We’ve also included the best all-around transit apps, and even one that showcases urban running routes.

All of the apps listed here will get you out and exploring, whether as a long-time local or a visitor looking to go beyond the beaten path. And if you need even more tech intel, don’t miss our roundups of the best apartment rental apps and renovations apps you should know for your next project.

Have an app you love? Let us know in the comments.

Bike Citizens

The handlebars of a bicycle. Attached to the handlebars in a holder is a mobile phone. On the mobile phone screen is a map.

Specifically designed for cyclists in urban areas, the Bike Citizens app lets you pick routes based on whether you want a leisurely, fast, or convenient route, and also takes into account what type of bicycle you’re riding. It’s also on a mission to make bicycling routes safer and has launched campaigns in some cities—like Brussels—that help identify dangerous spots and traffic bottlenecks. Although coverage is more comprehensive in Europe, Bike Citizens is available in most big cities in the U.S.

Insider tip: Download the map material so you don’t need an internet connection to navigate.

On-the-go: Bike Citizens is available on Android and iOS .

Three mobile phone screens displaying the Citymapper app.

Probably the best-rated transit app on the web, Citymapper gives you A-to-B trip planning with accurate estimated arrival times. It searches all transit modes—like subway, bus, rail, ferry, bike/car sharing, Uber—and lets you compare your options in real time. It also gives you step-by-step directions for finding your route, and many metro maps are available offline. Citymapper is currently in an array of international cities and the biggest cities in the U.S.: NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, and Seattle.

Insider tip: Set up alerts on the routes you frequent so you know when lines are disrupted.

On-the-go: Available on iOS and Android .

The Moovit app.

Another well-reviewed transit app, Moovit is a popular choice thanks to its sheer size: It covers 1,200 cities in more than 70 countries. It allows you to choose the best route based on arrival times, schedules, and transit mode, and then navigates you to where you need to be with live directions.

Insider tip: Don’t underestimate the power of your city’s bike share. Moovit lets you see how many bikes are left to rent at particular stations.

On-the-go: Available on Android and iOS and at http://moovitapp.com

Screens in the Nearify app.

Need something to do in your favorite city? The Nearify app searches 20 million events worldwide to find out what’s happening near you. You can browse events based on interests, add favorite artists or venues, see what’s trending, and set up alerts so you never miss an outing.

Insider Tip: Nearify shows you how close you are to an event and will even give you directions.

On-the-go: Get it on iOS and Android .

Mobile phones with the RunGo app on their screens.

Billed as an app for runners who also like to travel, RunGo uses turn-by-turn voice navigation for thousands of running routes, races, and city tours. You can also create your own running route. Like other running apps, RunGo tracks and logs your running stats, but the real difference here is the ability to show up in an unfamiliar city, find a running route, and access easy voice navigation.

Insider tip: Download routes in advance so you can explore a new city without using data.

On-the-go: It’s available for Android and iOS .

Mobile phones displaying the Sidekix app.

Calling itself an app that promotes “urban discovery on the go,” Sidekix is a navigation app that chooses walking routes based on what you want to do and see along the way. You can tailor your route to your needs and build and save routes to share with your friends. This is an ideal app to help you explore things off the main tourist spots.

Insider tip: You can share your location with friends and send your route directly to them.

On-the-go: Sidekix is available on Android and iOS .

Spotted by Locals

A screen in the Spotted by Locals app.

If you’re looking to get off the beaten path and avoid the tourist traps, try Spotted by Locals. With guides for 67 cities, Spotted by Locals gives you handpicked insights and favorites from people that live in the cities they talk about. You can expect lots of hidden gems and in-the-know recommendations, but beware that each city guide costs $3.99—though that’s cheap compared to a paperback travel guide.

Insider tip: The app can also be used 100 percent offline with detailed full city maps, no internet required.

On-the-go: Spotted by Locals is available on Android and iOS .

Streetography

Screens in the Streetography app.

If you’re visually inspired and want to scope out potential neighborhoods and streets, Streetography could be the app for you. The app overlaps maps with curated, high-quality user-generated photos that aim to give you a taste of the local flavor of each block, neighborhood, or city. This is a refreshing way to explore neighborhoods.

Insider tip: You can also filter photos by recency or photographer.

On-the-go: Streetography is available on Android and iOS .

Screens in the Walc app.

Despite still being in beta, the award-winning Walc looks promising. Google Maps and other navigation tools rely on north-south directions or warnings like “bear left in 1,000 feet” to get people around cities. Walc uses landmarks to guide the way—essentially providing directions based on what you can see—which is great if “turn right at the park” sounds more up your alley. You can also tap a category (coffee, food, shopping, buildings, etc.) and see what’s walkable around you.

Insider tip: Sign up on the Walc website to be the first to know when the full app rolls out.

On-the-go: The beta version is currently available on iOS and Android .

10 best apps for city tourists.

10 Best Apps for City Tourists

Having been a latecomer to the smartphone world (I reluctantly swapped my beautiful brick of an old phone for one less than a year ago!) I’m now a fully-fledged lover and devotee of the smartphone revolution.

Never is this more apparent than when I’m on the road; it is as a traveller that wonderful the smartphone and its vast number of apps really come into their own.

I’ve found this to be particularly true when I’ve been visiting cities as a tourist, where sometimes the overwhelming array of attractions and accommodation, sites and smells can be more confusing than enjoyable.

In cities, I love to get to the heart of the place, to get lost among its street and to feel the rhythmic beat of life there, but all too often this just isn’t accessible to a short term visitor.

Enter the smartphone and the app, which are making this phenomenon more and more easy for visitors.

A mad lover of this new way of travel, here are my 10 best apps for city tourists that really allow you to get the best out of your chosen destination.

Georgia, Tbilisi, Around Rustaveli

I’ve recently been getting really into this great new app, which is based around people sharing experiences of their favourite places across the globe.

From restaurants to travel agents, shops to hostels, I love this free app so much, because Tread is great for discovering brilliant local recommendations in a new metropolis, which is why I’ve voted it one of the best apps for city tourists.

#2 Wi-Fi Finder

Laptop, Security, VPN

I highly recommend using this brilliant free app to locate the nearest Wi-Fi spot when you are travelling in a new city.

As a travel blogger, getting internet connection (and not using up my previous data) is crucial, which is why I reckon this is one of the best apps for travellers around.

Whether it’s booking accommodation and transport, checking reviews on TripAdvisor or sharing your experiences on Tread, finding Wi-Fi when you’re away can be as necessary as it is entertaining!

The great thing about Wi-Fi Finder specifically is that you don’t have to be online to use it – just as well really!

#3 Google Translate

Formerly Wordlens, the free app now known as Google Translate is easy to use and very handy.

Accessible without internet or wireless connection, this clever app brilliantly detects words and phrases in a foreign language and then seamlessly translates them for you.

Available via a number of means you can either photograph, say or write/draw a word for immediate understanding of its meaning.

Excellent for reading menus, following signs, taking directions or completing booking forms, this app works in up to 90 world languages.

#4 Citymapper

London Underground

This award-winning app is exactly what you need to help you get around a new city.

We’ve all been there – stranded, lost and confused in a foreign metro station, unable to read the sings or ask anyone for help – but we needed be again.

With Citymapper you can check timetables, routes, maps and receive alerts all of which are constantly updated in real time.

With data from 29 major global cities and expanding, this wonderful app brilliantly integrates different transport modes, and even includes Uber Taxi services, to make sure you can navigate perfectly round the next city you visit.

Definitely one of the best apps for toursits out there.

Sending you automated reminders (such as flight alerts) and mapping your itinerary (as well as allowing you to share it with friends) this great app brings together everything you might need to enjoy a wonderful time in your chosen city.

#7 Museums Mobile

Another free app that is fantastic for city tourists is Museums Mobile, which brilliantly locates hundreds of museums and galleries around the world.

But that’s not all, this great app also features information about current exhibitions as well as user reviews.

Available in 3 languages, this is a must for art lovers or history buffs because it also has up to date info about a ton of cultural events happening in a load of cities around the world. Mark your favourites, leave a review and join the discussion with like-minded travellers and locals.

I am and old fashioned traveller without technology, but I am trying out new things among which technology definitely belongs 😛

Absolutely Nikoleta. I’m not a huge tech-fan either, but discovering some of these simple to use resources definitely can make life a little easier in some ways!

Useless without internet

This app is to be used when touristing, in a foreign country. Chances are most people wont have internet in their celphone in that foreign country because they dont live there. It turns out this app is useless without internet. It should work without internet!!!

Reply from Visit A City

Hi Richard, Thanks for the feedback, however one of Visit A City's app most prominent features is it's ability to work offline including access to your plans, attractions and maps. Please contact [email protected], our support staff will be glad to assist. Happy Travels, Visit A City

A “USEFUL” TRAVEL APP!!!

This is a great app and gets better as it grows!!! I am a seasoned traveller and can honestly say that this is very useful. It can be for those who love “planned holidays” but it can be for those who like spontaneity (tag ideas and do them on your own time vs being scheduled).

Almost there

Sharing itineraries has been hit and miss. Modifying itineraries is a bit cumbersome. Drag and drop would be nice. All the start times are based on the initial start time. It would be nice to set a start time and a duration for an event. Right now it is just the duration

App is amazing

App is amazing. We’re planning on a busy 7 days in Mexico City and this app really helped! Easy to use, pretty intuitive and the ability to plan your days the way you want is so awesome! Lots of linked resources, ticket links to activities and maps for your day are generated! Thanks!

The ease of daily itineraries

I find Vist A City very helpful in organizing my city visits. They seem to find the best places to visit according to my interests I love having their 1-4 days itinerary available off line Great job

Your we found was way less expensive

Very good! It directed us to a tour that was 1/3 the price of most others to the same destination. Maid in the Mist was the highlight of the Niagara Falls visit. Exceptional experience! Our guide,Don, was engaging and informative.

Needs more tools built in

It’s difficult to manipulate start and stop times for each activity. I wish there was a transit time to add for ferrys and subways. Also wish you could see the full itinerary as it will print out prior to downloading

I was impressed with the response in real time.

I was impressed with the level and speed of my exchange via email. I am happy to say that I have resolved the issue of how to use the desktop app and the iPhone app together, thanks to the explanation of the team member.

Disappointed

We paid for a cruise tour and had to wait while two trips came and went. The tickets were not recognized by the tour and the extra lunch I paid for was not honored. We ended up with packaged cookies and a bottle of water. Even my kids didn’t want the cookie. I feel as though the tour company and Visit A City were not communicating on updates or changes. It turned out to be quite a disappointment.

Hi, Sorry to hear about your experience. Please contact [email protected] and we will help you check if you are entitled for a refund. Best regards, Visit A City

Nothing in the listings helped me plan…

Nothing in the listings helped me plan a one day trip, particularly for this fall season. It was all for the summer and mostly for "beach" activities. None of the cities I was interested in Michigan were even listed.

Great Experience Except for Hornblower Cruises of San Diego

Your part of the experience was great. What we used the first two days more than paid for the purchase plan. However, one of your vendors in San Diego, Hornblower Cruises, simply failed to open on two of our three days without even a sign at their ticketing kiosk. I don’t know about the first day because we didn’t try that day. That north Harbor cruise was part of the reason I purchased the three passes for San Diego.

Everglades crocodile/alligator experience... did not see a single animal of this type

Got information of where to start my tour less than 12 hours prior to leave. I think 24 hours prior to start a tour is better. (Tour started at 1:00 pm, got info 1:00 am, wanted to plan ahead our trip). Also, they should tell people prior to embark this tour, NOT TO EXPECT TO SEE THE ALLIGATORS, although that is what you are paying for. I know it is not in the hands of the crew to know if they will show up, but at least, let people know what it would be the possibility of that happening... and it happened, we did not see a single alligator/crocodile.

I couldn’t do day all by myself

I couldn’t do day all by myself, switch hotel like I’ll do and this was the reason I downloaded this app because it could have been really helpful on a trip. But overall I had access to a majority of activities in cities

states refunds available when it is not…

states refunds available when it is not accurate costing me 1,400 dollars and a wasted trip as it cannot be canceled as the site says for "nearby" places that were 3 hours away!! this app ruined my trip!!

Thank you for your attention to my email. Your quick response and ability to solve my issue immediately was very much appreciated! I love using visit a city for all my tour bookings!!

After I downloaded offline map

After I downloaded offline map, where I put my GPS and shows me I am too far from the tourists map (downloaded) I am not happy as I can't access to this app. Usually I will need to reset my phone or uninstall this app and download it again, it will work. So it can be nervig when I can use it. Once I am in, its perfect to use this offline map.

Great app that shows me where to go

Great app that shows me where to go, the cost of things, how long I need to spend there and how long to get there from previous location and ultimately how to plan a day or trip. Just brilliant. It also makes suggestions of other things in the area.

Date of experience : October 26, 2021

I love this app! It’s simple, intuitive, and well constructed! I use it during a trip in Verona, and after few questions (how many days I stay there, hotel’s name etc) I had my personal guide on the phone! Amazing 🙂

The April 8 solar eclipse is here. How to watch in North Jersey

is the visit a city app free

Turn around, (and cover your) bright eyes — eclipse day is officially here in North Jersey.

By 2:09 p.m. Monday, the Garden State will begin its descent into eerie, daytime darkness, with 90% of the sun being covered in our area by 3:24 p.m.

If you want to see 100% of the sun covered, though? Hopefully you're reading this article early; because you'll need to hop in the car and get to upstate New York or Pennsylvania pronto.

But if you're Gen Z, don't worry about it. The next total eclipse in New Jersey is forecast for May 2079, so — as long as your nursing home has buses — you can totally get to the Catskills on time for that one.

Saving 2079 for 2079, however, here's how you can watch the solar eclipse in North Jersey this afternoon, April 8:

What time is the solar eclipse in North Jersey?

According to USA TODAY (which compiled a database of the best times to view the eclipse based on ZIP code), the partial eclipse will begin in North Jersey at 2:09 p.m., with peak coverage occurring at 3:24 pm.

Where can I watch the eclipse (in person) in New Jersey?

Unfortunately for those of us here in North Jersey, you'll have to travel out of state  to get the best view of the eclipse . Most Americans will get a glimpse, but the Garden State is at least a four- to five-hour drive from areas of upstate New York and northwest Pennsylvania that will be in the path of totality, which will stretch in the U.S. from Texas into Maine.

In New Jersey, then, we recommend driving to the most northwestern part of the state, as that area will be closest to the action. High Point State Park , in Sussex County, would make a great viewing spot.

Where can I watch the full eclipse (online)?

If you prefer not to watch outside (or would like a view of the full eclipse without having to suffer through a flight on JetBlue), USA TODAY will be livestreaming the eclipse on YouTube.

How will the weather be during the eclipse?

According to top weather outlets, North Jersey will have "pretty good to great" conditions for viewing this afternoon.

The Weather Channel and Weather Underground both are forecasting “partly cloudy” skies, with a high of 65 degrees.

What will the eclipse look like?

Though our state will not offer a full eclipse, North Jersey will still be able to see 90% to 95% of the sun being covered, which is pretty darn close.

Kris Kootale, a board member and trustee with the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey, said the blockage will make for a "very interesting visual spectacle," with only a small, crescent sliver of sunlight still visible as the moon passes in front of the star.

We'll also get more blockage than South Jersey, which is forecast to have only 85% to 90% of the sun covered — just another reason, beyond Taylor ham, Star Tavern and hot dogs all-the-way, why North Jersey is the king of the state.

Do I need eclipse glasses?

Though about 90% of the sun will be covered in our area, that's still enough light to do serious damage to your eyes, so yes, you will need protective eyewear .

Get solar eclipse glasses at department stores like Target or Walmart, or for free at many libraries and science museums.

NOTE: Regular sunglasses will not supply adequate protection from the eclipse.

Where can I find solar eclipse 'watch parties' in North Jersey?

Don't want to watch the eclipse alone? No problem. Many local organizations are offering watch parties where you can view the occurrence with like-minded enthusiasts.

One such event is  The Great Eclipse at Liberty Science Center  in Jersey City. Throughout the day, the center will give out free solar viewing glasses and host various eclipse-themed activities, including a telescope viewing, a live webcast, shows in the planetarium, hands-on astronomy activities and more.

Another option is the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey's Total Solar Eclipse Event in Hope, where astronomy lovers are invited — from 1 to 6 p.m. — to watch the eclipse with other space junkies. Glasses, of course, will be provided.

A few schools, such as Rockaway Valley in Boonton Township, which even bought a telescope for the event, will also be hosting watch parties to ensure that their students observe the eclipse safely.

Visit a business that is offering eclipse deals — like Beenie's Ice Cream , which is serving black cocoa waffle cones with edible stardust for the occasion — at the time of the crossing, and you're sure to find fellow viewers.

How long will the eclipse last?

The April, 8 solar eclipse will end around 4:35 p.m.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that.

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong.

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't.

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money.

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account.

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rome2Rio is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Downloading the Price Scanner and Converter is free from the App Store.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time.

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

KC Chiefs 2024 NFL Draft Top 30 Visit Tracker: News and Rumors

Here's who the reigning champs are hosting for visits as the 2024 NFL Draft approaches.

  • Author: Jordan Foote

In this story:

It's 2024 NFL Draft season for all 32 NFL clubs, and especially for the Kansas City Chiefs. Ahead of April's event in Detroit, the two-time reigning Super Bowl champions are hard at work preparing their draft boards.

For general manager Brett Veach and his staff, this month is a prime opportunity to add depth and future upside to the roster. In recent seasons, Kansas City's playoff runs have been fueled by contributions from outstanding rookie classes. It's a difficult formula to replicate, although Veach has improved since his first haul back in 2018.

As the Chiefs put their finishing touches on draft-related matters, the team is holding "top 30" visits with various prospects. These visits, capped at 30 for hosting purposes, allow organizations to bring in players for a variety of reasons. Examples of what takes place during top 30 visits include medical evaluations, interviews, film or conceptual work, facility tours and the like.

Essentially, these visits help teams gather more information about prospects. It's important to keep in mind that a top 30 visit does not necessarily reflect a club's level of interest. Sometimes, coaches or other staff simply want to get clarification on questions or concerns regarding players.

With that in mind, let's take a look at who the Chiefs are bringing to Kansas City for their 2024 top 30 visits.

Tracking Chiefs 2024 NFL Draft scheduled or completed top 30 visits

  • Washington WR Jalen McMillan , per MLFootball
  • TCU S Millard "Nook" Bradford , per Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report and The Draft Network
  • Penn State OT Caedan Wallace , per Justin Melo of The Draft Network

  • BYU OT Kingsley Suamataia , per Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda
  • Furman iOL Jake Johanning , per Cole Neely

  • Ohio State DL Michael Hall Jr. , per Zac Jackson of The Athletic
  • Georgia State OT Travis Glover , per Pauline
  • Boston College iOL Christian Mahogany, per Fowler
  • Western Michigan DE Marshawn Kneeland , per Fowler
  • Oregon State WR Anthony Gould , per Fowler

Rumors and NFL Scouting Combine formal interviews with Chiefs

At this year's Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, teams were permitted to hold 18-minute interviews with up to 45 different prospects. Here's who the Chiefs used some of their formal meeting spots on:

  • Missouri DL Darius Robinson
  • Texas WR Xavier Worthy
  • Texas TE Ja'Tavion Sanders , per Fowler
  • Houston OT Patrick Paul , per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2
  • Oregon RB Bucky Irving , per Cecil Lammey of Footballguys
  • Penn State TE Theo Johnson , per Tom Downey of Chat Sports
  • Oregon QB Bo Nix , per Walter Football
  • Iowa TE Erick All , per Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports
  • Rumored contact: Oregon WR Troy Franklin and Georgia WR Ladd McConkey , who Goldman says the Chiefs have met with "in some capacity"
