Lying on the banks of the river Tawi, Jammu is the second most populous city in Kashmir and among the most visited place as part of Kashmir tour packages. Jammu, nestled against the backdrop of the snow-capped Pir Panjal Mountains, forms part of the transition between the Himalayan range in the north and the dusty plains of Punjab in the south. The city is known as the City of Temples for its ancient temples and Hindu shrines. Since it is also the starting point for the hugely popular Vaishno Devi Temple and Amarnath Yatra, it is visited by tourists from far and wide as part of Jammu tour packages. According to history, the city was originally founded by Raja Jambulochan, who is believed to have ruled the area in the 9th century. One day, Raja had gone out for hunting when he happened to witness a tiger and a goat drinking water from the same pond. Fascinated by this unique sight, he decided to build a city at this place overlooking his brother king Bahu's fort, among the must-include places in Jammu tour packages. Hence, the city is called Jamboopura and gradually it came to be known as Jammu. The local tradition holds the city to be 3000 years old but this is not supported by historians. The city was earlier under the rule of Manhas Rajputs. Emperor Akbar brought the hill kingdoms of the region under Mughal suzerainty, but the kings enjoyed considerable political autonomy. In 1808, Jammu itself was annexed to the Sikh Empire by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the son of Mahan Singh. In 1818, Raja Kishore Singh, the father of Raja Gulab Singh, was appointed and anointed the ruler of Jammu Principality hence starting the Jamwal Dynasty, aka Dogra Dynasty. Kashmir came into being as a single political and geographical entity following the Treaty of Amritsar between the British Government and Gulab Singh signed on 16th March 1846. Since then, the state remained under the Dogra rule till the time India gained independence. Jammu has historically been the capital of Jammu Province and the winter capital of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir (1846-1952). After the partition of India, Jammu continues as the winter capital of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. With its majestic temples, religious shrines, snow-capped peaks, and cultural heritage, Jammu is truly a melange of pilgrimage, leisure, natural beauty, and heritage. The city houses the famous Maha Kali Temple which is considered second only to the Vaishno Devi Temple, Katra. Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort, Peer Kho Cave, Bhimgarh Fort, Baag-e-Bahu, Manda Zoo, Amar Mahal Palace, Mubarak Mandi Palace, Sidhra Golf Course, Ranbireshwar Temple, Dogra Art Museum, Rajender Park, Shiv Khori, Dudhadhari Mandir, etc., are some of the popular places to visit in Jammu. Besides, one can also visit Buddhist Stupas dating back to the 2nd century AD that are speaking about its rich heritage. The eccentricity of Jammu is also prevalent in its Dogra cuisine the crown of which is the scrumptious Wazwan (traditional Kashmiri buffet). Jammu is truly a melange of pilgrimage, leisure, natural beauty, and heritage. Lohri is one of the most popular and most celebrated festivals in Jammu that is held every year in January. This event witness the dawn of merriment and joy across the city and also marks the onset of spring which is known as Makar Sankranti in other parts of the country. Apart, a special dance called the 'Chajja' is also performed during this festival. The other festivals celebrated in Jammu are Baisakhi, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha, and Navratra Festival with much fervor that draws thousands of tourists. Hidden gem Patnitop: 5 must-visit places for travellers on a trip to Srinagar

When travellers chalk out their srinagar itineraries, they often skip a visit to the enchanting, quaint hill station of patnitop located in the lower himalayas in jammu..

Sanasar Lake: Patnitop

Patnitop, a beautiful hill station located in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir , offers a variety of attractions for tourists. Its close proximity to the Pir Panjal range and the fact that it is just an hour’s drive from the famous Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra, makes Patnitop popular among religious travellers who also frequent the 5,000-year-old Sudh Mahadev Temple.

For those travellers who want to enjoy the beauty and abundance of the Jammu & Kashmir region but don’t want to get caught up and juggle the huge crowds and packed touristy attractions in popular destinations like Srinagar , Patnitop is a perfect destination worth exploring.

So, the next time you travel to Jammu & Kashmir , stop over at Patnitop for a couple of days to enjoy these five must-visit places:

Natha Top – Picturesque hilltop

Just two km from Jammu and a short 14 km trek from Patnitop, Natha Top located near the picturesque town of Patnitop, is a hidden jewel for travellers journeying towards Srinagar . Positioned at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters, Natha Top offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks and lush green valleys below.

Peak of Natha Top Image Courtesy Its sumit sharma via Wikipedia Commons

This picturesque hilltop can be visited both in summer and winter as it offers a range of activities to keep one pumped up and active. Natha Top is pleasant throughout the year and offers unobstructed views of the Himalayas. You can simply pack in a picnic that can be enjoyed in its lush meadows.

It’s a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike, offering exciting activities such as paragliding, trekking, and skiing during winter months.

The drive up to Natha Top is equally enthralling, with a winding road cutting through dense pine and deodar forests. Remember to bring your camera, as the combination of the majestic peaks, verdant landscapes, and dramatic skies make for stunning photographic opportunities.

Aparna Ashram – Serene and tranquil retreat

For wellness enthusiasts, Aparna Ashram is the place to be! This international yoga centre located in Mantalai, known for its breathtaking natural beauty, provides a tranquil setting to practice yoga and meditation.

Yoga

This serene and tranquil retreat offers a spiritual respite amidst the grandeur of the Himalayas. A true sanctuary for spiritual seekers, Aparna Ashram was established by Swami Amardev Maharaj who was known for his teachings of universal love and peace. The Ashram hosts regular meditation and yoga sessions and also provides facilities for stay, where visitors can immerse themselves in a peaceful environment, away from the chaos of city life.

The Ashram is not only a place of spiritual retreat, but also offers an exploration of local culture and traditions. Tourists visiting should dress modestly respecting the norms of the Ashram, and partake in the shared community meals (langar) that showcase the simple yet flavoursome cuisine of the region.

One can sign up for a host of yoga programmes, workshops and training sessions conducted by experienced instructors. Aparna Ashram also facilitates cultural exchange and understanding, welcoming visitors from different countries and backgrounds.

Billoo ki Powri – Marvel of engineering

Billoo ki Powri, located on the way from Patnitop to Srinagar, is an astonishing piece of hill architecture that offers a unique experience for tourists. This marvel of engineering is essentially a set of 270 carved stone steps that connect the mountain base to the top. The remarkable craftsmanship and strategic location of this stairway make it a popular attraction in the area.

Billoo ki Powri

To visit this remarkable 270-step staircase chiselled painstakingly out of the mountain rock, your fitness levels need to be A-game! This remarkable feature is located in the town of Dawariyai, just a short distance from Patnitop. Though the exact origins of Billoo’s Staircase remain shrouded in mystery, the common belief is that it was commissioned by a former king of Chenani, as a convenient shortcut to Batote town.

As you climb the stairs, you’re treated to an ever-changing view of the valley below, with the snow-capped peaks of the distant mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop. The walk-up can be physically challenging, but the enchanting view at the top makes the effort worthwhile.

For history and architecture lovers, the detailed stone carvings of Billoo ki Powri serve as a fascinating insight into the local culture and craftsmanship. Visitors should remember to wear comfortable shoes, carry water and sun protection, and be prepared for a remarkable, panoramic vista that awaits at the top.
