Jeff Tweedy Of Wilco Announces Summer 2023 Tour

Jeff Tweedy

Jeff Tweedy has announced that he’ll be taking some time away from Wilco for a solo tour across North America this summer. See dates below.

The shows are part of a busy schedule for Tweedy, with Wilco about to play a series of dates in Iceland followed by US and European shows.

The spring dates will take the band across North America to perform in cities they missed on their previous tour. Additionally, Wilco will perform three-night residencies in Reykjavík, Chicago, and Port Chester, New York. Joining the band at select dates are Horsegirl and the A’s.

The band’s latest album Cruel Country was released digitally and on CD last year, and on vinyl earlier this year. Copies are available here .

The band have also recently released a short video of their gig at Carol’s Pub in Chicago from last October. The band’s YouTube channel explains, “On October 9, 2022 Wilco announced a surprise pop up show at Chicago’s Famous Late-Night Honky Tonk, Carol’s Pub. After the first show quickly sold out, the band added a second. When the line continued, they added a third.

“It was a special night in celebration of the band’s 12th studio album, Cruel Country . Of course we filmed it! Enjoy this edit of the band performing A Story To Tell, I Am My Mother, Cruel Country and Falling Apart (Right Now).

Jeffrey Scot Tweedy is an American songwriter and musician originally from Illinois who is best known as the lead singer of the band Wilco.

Starting his musical days in the band Uncle Tulepo in 1987, Jeff gained experience touring and writing music whilst gaining a cult following on the alternative country music scene. However due to inter-band disputes, Uncle Tulepo ceased to exist in 1994 and all the original members parted ways. Later that year Tweedy formed a new band with John Stirratt, Max Johnston, and Ken Coomer called Wilco.

The band had a more alternative rock sound and quickly became a momentous success in the States. Despite not charting on initial release, their first record 'A.M' has now sold over 150,000 copies in the US. The eight albums they have released have all peaked higher than their predecessor, with 2009's self titled release remaining their highest chart position at #4 and 2002's 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' remaining their best seller with over 600,000 units sold.

'A Ghost Is Born' is the band's most critically successful release. It won two Grammy awards; one for Best Alternative Music Album and one for Best Recording Package which was awarded to the art director. The album was also nominated for the prestigious Shortlist Music Prize in 2004. Jeff would often tour solo during his career mainly playing acoustic versions of Wilco songs along with some of his own material, in 2014 he announced he was working on a solo project entitled Tweedy with his son Spencer. An album entitled 'Sukierae' was released in September.

Live reviews

Jeff Tweedy has had a long and successful career in the music industry and he's still going. He is a songwriter, musician and record producer, but you may know him from being part of the band 'Wilco'. Although I think that Jeff has a lovely, mesmerising voice, he's not really my cup of tea. His live performance was lovely and had you wanting to sway along with your lighters in the air, but it wasn't a show that blew my socks off and left me thinking about it for weeks afterwards. You can't deny that he has talent, especially with a guitar. It's not surprising that he has been playing since he was 12 years old after getting injured in a bike accident that meant he couldn't leave the house for a while, so he turned to music. In 1994, Tweedy joined the band Wilco, which released 8 albums and had a lot of success. After a great run with the band, Jeff went onto work on his solo career by performing several solo tours, which was mostly acoustic compared to the music he played in bands in his past career. It was a nice change and he showed he can vary in his music widely, but although he may be right up some people's street with that soft and slow melodic style, it was quite boring for me. I have a lot of appreciation for what he does but I won't be in a hurry to see him again.

Very relaxed and talkative Jeff Tweedy at the Barbican last night. (3 February 2018)

Performing solo with acoustic guitar and harmonica, he opened with a powerful 1-2-3 of Via Chicago, I Am Going To Break Your Heart and Ashes Of American Flags.

This led into a set drawn from the repertoires of most of the bands he's been involved with through the years, with - obviously - a heavy emphasis on the Wilco songbook. All the interpretations went down well with the sold out crowd although it was a little strange hearing Impossible Germany without Nels Cline's solo.

Mr Tweedy even threw in a couple of new songs, the second of which expresses a wish for the world to be swept away in another flood. He turned this into a singalong.

The encore started with a truncated version of Remember The Mountain Bed and finished with A Shot In The Arm six songs and an impromptu Q&A later.

Slightly shorter than a Wilco set but he was doing all the lifting himself.

Set list here. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/jeff-tweedy/2018/the-barbican-london-england-2bee802e.html

Jeff live is NOT a Wilco show. It is acoustic. It is very much solo. If you expected a Wilco show...well, wait til they go back on tour.

BUT, Jeff puts on a great show. The songs are so full of music that it's hard to believe it is one voice and one guitar. Yes, these are mostly back catalog songs: lots of Wilco songs with a few Uncle Tupelo, Tweedy, and maybe even a Loose Fur or Golden Smog number...but they are great.

Jeff doesn't banter a lot. He seems to want to get to the next song. But he is not uncomfortable in this setting. Instead, you get to see how the song really is crafted...and it is wonderful.

Now please don't go and talk about work or your new dog or just run your cell phone all night. Talk a break and enjoy a truly great performance.

Jeff Tweedy is a whiny bitch who cannot handle anyone in his crowd if they appear to be having any fun. He constantly berated, made fun of, and abused his own audience. Very bizarre. Maybe he's back on pills.

Jeff doesn't disappoint. A beautiful venue with a wonderful crowd. Jeff is a consummate musician, professional and a great entertainer. I'll take more of that any day of the week!

I’ve only ever seen Jeff Tweedy (perform with Wilco) in large venues. It was such an incredible experience to enjoy his music in an intimate setting. Such a great night!

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy Announces Book Tour for World Within a Song

By Jazz Monroe

Jeff Tweedy

Jeff Tweedy is heading out on a book tour of World Within a Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music . On select dates, the Wilco frontman will invite guests including Nick Offerman, journalist (and sometime Pitchfork contributor) Amanda Petrusich , guitarist Nathan Salsburg, radio host April Baer, and others. The tour kicks off in Chicago on November 5 ahead of the book’s release on November 7 via Dutton .

World Within a Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music compiles Tweedy’s reflections on songs by the Replacements, Joni Mitchell, Otis Redding, Billie Eilish, Mavis Staples, the Velvet Underground, and a few dozen others. He says his third book “is the one I probably would have written first if I were more ambitious, and if I had been a little more clear-eyed about what I care most for in this world,” namely “other people’s songs.” Check out a playlist of songs discussed in the book below.

This month, Wilco announced a new, Cate Le Bon–produced album, Cousin , with a single called “Evicted.”

Jeff Tweedy on Judaism, Staying Sober, and Why He’s ‘Disappointed’ by Dylan

By Simon Vozick-Levinson

Simon Vozick-Levinson

Jeff Tweedy never meant to be a memoirist. “I was kind of recruited to write a book based on some agent’s idea that I might be able to write something worth reading,” he says, recalling a conversation five or more years ago. “I said, ‘Sure, I guess.’ It felt accidental.” That somewhat inauspicious beginning led to Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back) , the acclaimed memoir that Tweedy published in 2018. A couple of years later, he wrote a second bestseller, How to Write One Song , encouraging readers to tap into their own creativity. And this fall, with World Within a Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music (due out Nov. 7), Tweedy is going for the three-peat.

“Writing is remembering,” Tweedy says. “It’s a really powerful way to get to things inside yourself that you can’t get to without putting it down on the page — things that are hidden inside your memory.”

While he’s been building a side gig as a noted author, Tweedy has also been on an extraordinarily productive run with Wilco. Just a year and a half after their double LP Cruel Country , the band will return on Sept. 29 with Cousin , their 13th studio album. Produced by Welsh art-pop visionary Cate Le Bon — the first time in more than a decade that they’ve brought in an outside collaborator in that role — it’s an album full of unusual instrumentation, textural nuance, and emotional depths.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

As he and his band head into a bountiful fall, Tweedy talked with Rolling Stone about life, music, religion, sobriety, and more.

What’s the best piece of advice anyone has given you? Early on, we were touring with the Band. It was the Arkansas Traveler tour with Michelle Shocked and Uncle Tupelo. I was rehearsing, and Rick Danko stepped up onstage behind me, out of the blue, and said, “You sound desperate. You should always sound desperate. Don’t lose that.” It’s a weird way of saying something that I totally agree with. I think what he meant is people have to hear that you care — not that you’re desperate in your life, but that you’re desperate to communicate, desperate to connect. That’s why we sing.

Daniel Kramer, Photographer Who Documented Bob Dylan's Electric Transformation, Dead at 91

How to watch 'thank you, goodnight: the bon jovi story': stream the docuseries online, bon jovi, forever young, comes face-to-face with mortality in 'thank you, good night'.

You sound a little like Bob Odenkirk’s character on I Think You Should Leave . “Triples is best.” Exactly. That’s me. I think I’ve got triples of the ’68 Gibson Dove.

Back to the book for a sec. You also have one chapter about a song you can’t stand. Talking about Bon Jovi ’s “Wanted Dead or Alive,” you write, “This song sucks and you should not like it.” Have you thought about what you’ll do if you ever run into that guy? I have run into Jon Bon Jovi . And it’s not the first time I’ve said something negative about him. I was on a TV show one time in Canada, and the question was, “Jon Bon Jovi says that Steve Jobs killed music.” And I said, “Jon Bon Jovi killed music.” It was set up like a bowling pin. What was I supposed to do, not knock that one over? But then, when I met him, I copped to that, in case he had ever seen it.

Really, like everything else in the book, that’s more about me. It’s about me not understanding what could give somebody that kind of confidence, to swing for the fences every time.

You were skeptical of religion growing up, but you converted to Judaism as an adult. What role does Jewish tradition and belief play in your life these days? We’re primarily secular in our family. We go to High Holy Days and things like that. We have Seders. It’s a community that we feel embraced by, and a congregation that has a warm feeling to it for our family. When we’ve gone through things like my wife’s cancer diagnosis, it’s important to have a support system beyond just your friends — to mean something to the fabric of a community larger than that.

You’ve been in recovery for almost 20 years, since you went to rehab for an addiction to painkillers in 2004. How much do you have to think about that these days? It’s a daily thing. It’s not something you want to lose sight of. It’s not as intense; the feeling of being on a ledge has gone away considerably over the years. At this point, right now, I’m in an enormous amount of pain, because I have really bad osteoarthritis in my hips, and I count my blessings every day that this isn’t the period in my life where I’m going to be introduced to opioids and find out how much power they have over me, and maybe not make it. I feel really, really fortunate to know what I’m up against and accept the pain.

I’ve been thinking about it a lot more lately. I actually have dreams about drugs now that I haven’t had in a long time. And I feel so fortunate that I’ve created a habit for myself of being able to put that thinking where it belongs.

There’s a lot about emotional pain in this book, too. You write about being a sensitive kid who “feel[s] so many things so deeply,” in a world that “keeps not giving a shit.” Has that gotten any easier for you as an adult? How do you cope with the cruelty of the world? I don’t ever want to get completely used to it. I just learned how to take care of myself better and give myself a better chance to survive … I want to be helpful. I want to do good stuff. I want to do things that make me feel like I deserve to have the things I have. There’s a responsibility to that. I’m one of very, very few people that have ever lived that gets to do what he loves to do for a living. Gosh, how do you not feel compelled to pay back something ?

Team trump’s cross-examination of stormy daniels was gross, kelly clarkson wins key rulings ahead of new trial with ex-husband, trump may owe more than $100 million in back taxes: report.

Bob Dylan is one of your heroes. He published a similarly structured book last year, writing about a series of songs and what they mean to him. Did you read it? I’d already planned to write this book, so I was a little nervous when that came out. I did read it, but it was so far from being the same genuine spirit … I didn’t really think of it as the same idea. I was a little bit disappointed by it, to be honest. It’s very Dylan — it lets you in and pushes you out at the same time, somehow. There were things that felt like they were probably written by the Theme Time Radio guy that helped him. [Ed. Note: “Theme Time Radio Hour” producer Eddie Gorodetsky, whose other credits include “Two and a Half Men” and “Dharma & Greg,” is credited as a consultant on Dylan’s 2022 book.]

Speaking of legendary songwriters, you suggest in your book that Stevie Wonder could write a new national anthem to replace “The Star-Spangled Banner.” That’s a great idea, but why not you? [Laughs.] Well, who would you rather have write it: Me or Stevie Wonder?

Do you remember your first mixtape? That sense of wonder, discovery and personal taste you get from a collection of songs on cassette, CD or even a digital playlist? Jeff Tweedy 's new book, World Within a Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life that Changed My Music , captures that feeling perfectly.

It's a series of 50 essays, each tied to a different song, that welcomes you into his world. In the first part of our session, Jeff joins me to talk several of them, including one that taught him to be a better musician, one that he hated but grew to love, and the song he understands you love, but he just can't bring himself to.

And then, later in our session, we head to the stage for a mini-concert from his band, Wilco , performing songs from their 13th studio album, Cousin . But first, let's get into our talk with Jeff Tweedy starting with a bit of one of those songs featured in his new book: Otis Redding 's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay."

You won’t even have to already love Wilco to find joy in the experience of reading Jeff Tweedy ’s new book, “World Within a Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music” — although nothing about coming in as a fan will exactly hurt . His tales about how dozens of pieces of (mostly) pop and rock music have hit him in a personal way over the decades is full of anecdotal pleasures that get at more universal truths about how we’re shaped by art… or, alternately, just illustrate a funny story Tweedy neglected to include in his previous books, the music memoir “Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back)” and the instructional “How to Write One Song.”

Popular on Variety

In the introduction to this new book, you say that if you went back and were going to choose which order to write your three books in, you’d do this one first. Why is it that you’d want to do this book about songs before diving into a memoir, or a book about creative writing, if you did it over again?

I think it’s the topic I care the most about. I don’t know if I have the most expertise in listening! I don’t think it matters. I think everybody has enough expertise to put music together in their own consciousness and make it worthwhile, too (as explored in “How to Write One Song”). But (other people’s music) is the thing I think I’ve thought about the most, and it’s also a subject that’s so vast, it felt easier to write about than than my own life, even.

Yeah, I checked it out. I read it because my book was already well underway when that book was announced, and there was a little nervousness that it might be similar or have more similarities than it ended up having, which was a concern. But yeah, when I read it, it was like, oh, this is a completely different approach to this otherwise similar topic.

You made it very personal. Few of the entries are just pure music appreciation, and a lot of the chapters have a lot of autobiographical detail about how these songs touched you. Would you consider it an adjunct to your memoir, in any way?

Yeah, I think in a lot of ways it’s more intimate than my memoir. It’s strange. I mean, I think we all have had moments where a song has spoken for us, and felt like, “You want to know how I feel about this? Let me play this song by somebody else.” And a lot of that is a little bit embarrassing, because it’s vulnerable. It’s a vulnerable feeling to share your passions and share things that mean a lot to you. There’s a fear of rejection that is almost more concerning than sharing my own songs with people. It’s, I think, a really intimate way of expressing yourself. And it’s odd that music can contain that. We project so much onto it that it becomes something very personal… it becomes us. And it defies logic, I think.

In talking about the Billie Eilish song “I Love You,” you mention that sometimes you’ll play a song to get underneath it, get inside it, or just try to understand it. What’s that about? Do you really do that a lot, or is that just kind of in special instances?

Oh, I do it all the time. I feel like I learn a lot. It’s just a deeper way of learning how to appreciate something, just because I can play the guitar, because… I mean, there’s a lot of music that I can’t figure out how to play on just an acoustic guitar. Most hip-hop doesn’t quite work, in that context, although there are songs that do, and it’s fun when you can figure them out. It’s just a habit I have — I just like learning other people’s songs.

Once in a while you come back around to making general statements about, um, what the sharing of music means, and it’s interesting — “Loving one thing completely becomes a love for all things somehow.” There is a theme of openness throughout the book, and and communication. You say, “It teaches you to communicate with people solely using the language you’ve learned talking about music, to talk about art, gardening, college basketball, coaching, whatever.” I feel like I aspire to that, but at the end of the day in a conversation, I can feel like, “OK, let’s get back to talking about music, even if you are the college basketball coach.” It’s admirable that you’ve sort of used it as a way of developing empathy, to understand other people’s passions.

A lot of people were discussing a chapter that was excerpted in the New York Times, about loving ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” after getting over a regrettable bias against anything “disco”-related in your youth. Many can relate.

Something I would like to clear up is that that essay in the Times might have made it sound like I just came around to ABBA last week. But the essay in the context of the book is more accurate. I think it’s clear that it’s something that happened a long time ago, but it was a firmly held belief. And it was good to like realize that, no, God, this should not be denied.

As much as this book is about things you love, you have four short chapters that are about things you don’t: “Happy Birthday to You,” “I Will Always Love You,“ “The Star Spangled Banner” and a Bon Jovi song.

I mean, think about all of those things. They’re all so monolithic, impactful and immune to almost any criticism, so I felt like they were safe to illustrate that, just for the book to be realistic, I don’t think anybody really can like everything, or should. It would be really strange and boring if we all only like the same things and only dislike the same things. There would almost be no point in having taste — there would be no such thing. So, yeah, I thought that Bon Jovi probably could take a punch. I’ve met Jon Bon Jovi; he’s always been super nice to me. I love Dolly Parton. And “Happy Birthday” and “The Star Spangled Banner” — I’m not going to do anything to dissuade anybody from having to hear those songs. I’ve always thought “Happy Birthday” was cloying, and I thought, “I’m never going to tell anybody that, probably,” or it’s not something I felt compelled to do.

We recently had an office Slack discussion where the “Nuke the Knack” campaign of the late ‘70s came up, when some people hated “My Sharona” — which is one of the songs you effusively praise in your book. It was weird, but telling, that in 2023 we’re debating a record from 1979.

Wow. I mean, that’s probably a fun debate. But where it gets really weird to me is when people try and convince somebody else not to like something, like there’s an objectively truthful or factually correct opinion of something like that, and that’s just absurd. I mean, millions of people bought that record. It still gets played on the radio. It’s amazing.

Nowadays everybody truly is a critic.

We’re definitely a culture that has leaned into opinion — we’ve gone all in on the idea that we should have opinions about everything, and it’s not good for us. I don’t think it helps many people. I think it is much healthier to go, “I don’t get it, but obviously somebody does,” and then that should be left at that. But I think a lot of people find it intolerable to feel left out of a conversation, even though it’s not for them, and force themselves to weigh in. Everybody has to care about everything.

There’s that intuitive sense that kicks in. That’s also a part of music as well, beyond just the purely intellectual understanding. Have you listened to any of her records? There’s so much communication happening, just in the rasp in her voice — I don’t know, it’s just really rich, rich music to me. I wish I understood it better and could understand the language exactly. I’ve tried to find a translation for everything. What I talk about in the book is how the translations, when I get them, aren’t that far off from what I feel like I’m getting from the music, and I think that’s kind of an amazing magic trick.

The book is so well-written, and so immediate and engaging and clear. And your prose style is so different from your songwriting style, in certain regards. Not that these different media would ever exactly correlate for any writer. But your lyrical voice is sometimes impressionistic and not always super-literal in the storytelling … and then, as a prose writer, you’re very straightforward. A lot of people are good at one or the other — really good at putting flights of fancy into song or really good at just writing very direct prose — and don’t tend to have both skill sets. Do you have any thoughts about the different parts of your brain you might be using for each?

I think that they’re kind of photo negatives of each other, at least the way they work for me. I feel like having realistic expectations about my prose writing helped me focus on just wanting to be able to read it out loud and feel like it was clear and still sounded like me. I really got excited learning how to write prose on these three books — just because I’d spent so much time condensing language and trying to find some essence of language and imagery (in lyrics). It felt like finishing a puzzle, to learn how to do kind of the opposite. I’m not trying to, you know, revolutionize literature.I thought that what people would be coming to my books for would be something much simpler, and that would be an openness, generosity, and an experience of maybe feeling like we spent some time together. So that made it a lot easier to just focus on being clear.

Since starting  Wilco  in 1994  Tweedy  has written original songs for ten  Wilco  albums  and  collaborated  with  folk singer Billy Bragg to bring musical life to three albums-full  of  Woody Guthrie-penned lyrics in  the  Mermaid Avenue series.  In 2014 he released Sukierae, a musical collaboration  with   his  son  and  drummer Spencer  Tweedy .   Wilco 's latest releases, 2015's Star Wars  and  2016's Schmilco were born from  the  same recording sessions before veering into decidedly different directions: Star Wars, a boisterous, glam-rocking showcase  of   Wilco 's variable styles, Schmilco it's quieter mirror counterpart, executed in modest arrangements  and  instrumentation. Jeff Tweedy is also an accomplished producer, working  with  from  his  Chicago recording studio  with  artists like Richard Thompson, White Denim, Low  and  more. He produced a pair  of  albums for iconic soul  and  gospel singer Mavis Staples including  the  2011 Grammy-award winning  album  You Are Not Alone.  Jeff   Tweedy  is “ one   of   the   most   daring   songwriters   of   his   generation ”  and   his   band   Wilco  is “ vital ,  adventurous  …  breaking   new   stylistic   ground   with   each   ambitious   and   creatively   restless   album .”  Salon . com
